The High Road

L

ife has often been compared to a rather short journey on a winding spiritual highway. The journey has lessons and trials along the way but also incredible joy, beauty and fulfillment. We are all safe; we cannot fail because all complete the journey safely. One of the interesting things about life is that there are an infinite number of roads or highways that we can choose. Each of these life paths are open to us, it is our choice which path we choose. We can even change paths if we see that we are headed into a neighborhood we do not like. We are given two magnificent tools to help us navigate our life paths. The first is imagination. It has been said that our imagination is the proof of God within us. Alone among all the creatures on this Earth, we possess imagination. In fact, it is the greatest power a human being has. We often think of imagination as just flights of fancy or “wool gathering” but no, it is so very much more than that. It is the root of all that we create in our lives. Precedent does not bind us, we can see things that never were and go to the stars in our minds. We can imagine anything and then make it so. You can never achieve what you cannot imagine. You must have the mental picture before you can put it on the canvas of your life. Henry Ford saw in his mind hundreds of cars rolling down a line and at each station on that line, a different part or system was installed. He could see hundreds or thousands of cars being built in one day, where only five or six could be built before. What if we could produce thousands

a day? Why could we lower the price so that every working person could own a car! This was 1903, right after his first company failed and cars were just rich men’s toys costing many thousands of dollars in a time when the average worker made a dollar a day. It seemed Ford was done before he had begun. He could not quit; the vision was too strong. A year later, he found an investor and launched the Ford Motor Car Company. Within two years, the Model T was born and America was on wheels. He paid his workers an unheard of $5 a day, which really ticked off the other industrialists. Why did he take this radical step? So his workers could afford to buy his cars! That is an example of the high road. Choosing the path that is the highest and best for everyone concerned. The second great power is discernment. That is the power of wisdom. It is the ability to see what is fine, what is good and what is real in things, people and in life. Discernment is what enables us to look beyond the flesh, the oration, the hype and see if there is substance or emptiness inside. Discernment leads to wisdom, which many never attain. Wisdom leads to good choices, good relationships and happiness. All of us have intelligence and we all have imagination. What we do with these two great powers, imagination and discernment is what determines whether our journey of life is made on the highway or the byway. Until we are together again, richest blessings on each noble, lady and Shrine family member. 

Potentate’s notes

Nobles and ladies, Jersey Mike’s Subs, partnering with Sahib Shriners with their “Day of Giving” to Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa. (see article on page 14) Summer is here, and if you think it is hot here, you should have been with your Divan and Representatives in Houston, Texas. Now that is hot! However, everything was in air conditioning so it was not too bad. Congratulations to Imperial Potentate Sir Jerry G. Gantt having been elected in Houston, Texas at the Imperial Session. Emeritus Recorder Bill Batten will have all the information for you very soon in an article. Membership has fallen very low and we need to help our Shrine get it back on track. Your Membership Committee and Divan are and have been working very hard on getting new members to join us here at Sahib. Now step forward to help us grow by bringing in a new member for our Ceremonial during September 16, 18 and 19. Well do not sit there, ask your friends and neighbors to join you in the best Shrine in Florida. Here are some numbers from the past few years, it tells a story as I write this. In 2015, we have lost 30 plus nobles to the Black Camel and brought in 14 new Shriners. Here is some information: 2009 - 1,659 created 40 2010 - 1,555 created 28 2011 - 1,465 created 09 2012 - 1,367 created 18 2013 - 1,274 created 44 2014 - 1,150 created 15 2015 - 1,125 created 14 (to date) This really woke me up. We can raise the numbers if we all pull together and ask those brother Masons. Remember we are a Team and we can get it done, working together. I am proud to serve the nobility. Stay healthy and remember those who are not. (Stay cool nobles) Respectfully, Connie Jacobi, Potentate

s the warm weather has set in, activity at Sahib is to be planned for the cool months ahead. We need nobles with ideas to get involved in this planning for fundraising. You newly made nobles of the recent MiniCeremonials please come forward with your ideas. The Imperial is stressing the need for family social activity; the Divan agrees and there is a need to hear from you noble fathers in ways we can provide interesting activity for your family. Let us hear from you. The renewing of the decor in the temple is almost complete in the Main Hall and Lounge. Carpets may be laid in the Main Hall by the time you read this article. As new income sources are sought, our temple must present social activity and an up-to-date decor. So as we proceed into the future, let us keep in mind membership and renewing our temple, to keep it relevant to the times. The Divan is discussing items in the temple, some 10 plus years old and some 20 years old, for replacement. If there are things you see that need fixing or replacing, let a Divan member know. It will be done, if not as soon as you wish, keep reminding the Divan member as there are many things happening at once. Sometimes suggestions fall between the cracks. A fundraiser discussion is going around the temple concerning a fall golf outing, a fun Masonic brotherhood outing. An outing such as this will need nobles to volunteer to help in organizing a place to play and an

afterglow or 19th hole when play is complete. In order to get this fundraiser organized plans must get underway quickly. If you are interested in a Master Mason/noble golf outing, please contact Assistant Rabban Noble Bill Balkwill or me as soon as possible to get this outing underway. You are needed in developing such a golf outing, so give me a call at the Shrine office 366-4449 ext. 305. There is a scheduled 12:45 p.m. Stated Meeting on Thursday, August 13. It is “very Important” as information will be presented that will need the input from nobility. Please arrange business or personal activity so you may attend if possible. Sahib Shriners’ representatives returned from the Imperial Session in July. I will have Representative Emeritus Recorder Bill Batten’s report in the September edition since the August Reporter was at press before the session closed. The Motor Corps Shrine Club will sponsor the Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance on August 11. Remember the 2015 Fall Grand Ceremonial will be September 16, 18 and 19. If you know a candidate, you will find an application/petition in this edition. Have your candidate fill out and return it to the office with the proper fees as soon as possible. May the remainder of the summer find you with joy for the hope of cooler weather returning and always remember the child within. I will see you at Sahib. 

his year is more than half over and things at the Shrine are going really well. Our new five-year Strategic Plan was well accepted by our nobility at the Unit/Club Head Meeting. There will be more information in September as we release the total plan to the nobility. The plan is designed as a flexible one. Nothing except the Mission Statement is ever set in stone. The expectation is that, over time, many current strategies will be achieved while new strategies will be identified and added to the plan. The Divan is working as a team to accomplish this plan and they have all accepted our goals. If you wish to discuss this plan or have ideas for the plan, please contact me. We just got back from the Imperial Session in Houston, Texas. Many things were covered during

It will go a long way in helping our kids and Shrine. Lady Gail and I did a side trip to Michigan to see our granddaughter Luna who is doing great. It is hard to believe that she is 6 months old now. ay’s news for the August edition of The Reporter due to no July issue. May has been a busy month at the Venice Shrine Club. We had a thank-you celebration on May 11. All members who were part of the Hospital Days collections earlier this year were invited to a delicious breakfast at Althea’s Restaurant on Miami Avenue in downtown Venice. Spouses were included also. The Venice Shrine Club collected more than $5,500 for the Transportation Fund at Sahib. These funds are used to help defray the costs of getting our kids to the Shriners Hospitals for Children for their treatments. By vote of your Executive Committee, the amount

was rounded up by $100. On May 14, two checks were presented to Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi totaling $5,600. Well done nobles. May 19 was our monthly luncheon, as always a delicious meal was offered by the folks at Left Coast, your choice of beef, shrimp or chicken. Seven lucky nobles attending won scratch tickets from the Florida Lottery. The Money Mania saw no winner; reminder, you have to be there to win. Those funds will rollover into the next drawing. September 15 is our next luncheon and we hope to see you there. Guests are always welcome. We will be dark in August 

ummertime. That is clearly a reference to this time of year. But it is also a reference to the theme for August’s Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance (BADD) presented by the Motor Corps. So let me begin this article by encouraging all readers to mark their calendars for Tuesday, August 11. Musical entertainment is by the “Mellotones,” one of the very popular groups to entertain at Sahib. We have two great choices of meal entrées: Roast Pork Loin with apple stuffing or Stuffed Flounder. There is also something else worthy of note. No coats or ties for this event! Preferred (i.e. suggested) dress for men is Hawaiian or Guayabera (Cuban) shirts and slacks or dressy summer casual; for women, the dress is commensurate attire. A number of the Motor Corps members will be wearing our black Guayabera shirts. We plan to have one of our Shrine white bikes in the lobby to welcome you that evening. So make your reservations with Marylou by the previous Thursday, August 6. See you there. Ten members of the Motor Corps made a pilgrimage to Ideal Classic Cars in Venice back on June 20. They had a great time looking at some beautiful cars even though none were sold that day. Only downside was being caught in the rain on the return trip. Hope you were at the Shriners’ Luncheon on June 25. Two representatives from Jersey Mike’s Subs in the Sarasota-Bradenton area presented a check for $14,519 to the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa. Three Motor Corps members attended the presentation and many more of our members helped with the fundraiser back in March. Kudos to Jersey Mike’s Subs for their contribution to the hospital. Our Bikerbilly Dinners began on Thursday, July 16. Through August 27, Motor Corps members and their

ladies give the Hillbilly Shrine Club a summer break. If you have not tried our Bikerbilly Dinners, you have several more weeks to come out on a Thursday night. We are sure you will enjoy our famous burgers, onion rings and maybe even some battered mushrooms, plus a number of other items on our menu. Parade Marshal Ron Enger advises us of the Pioneer Days Parade in Englewood on Monday, September 7. This annual Labor Day parade is a morning parade, so weather is going to be a factor. I hope that the Motor Corps can participate. All of the remaining parades in calendar year 2015 are night parades. Several of our members are looking ahead to our annual trek to Murphy, North Carolina. Dates are October 8-11th. Weather should be great in early October and leaves will be turning with the arrival of fall. A few will be staying at Motor Corps member Gary Nickols’ Rivers Edge Mountain RV Resort. Back on June 19, one of our senior members celebrated a very special birthday at a surprise party thrown by his family. Jeff Young (Snowman) was completely caught off guard by the more than 30 family members and Motor Corps members at the Shrine. The Sahara Room was decorated in orange and blue, suggesting colors of Syracuse University. Jeff is one of our original members and a dedicated member of the Motor Corps. We have three Motor Corps members and their ladies with birthdays in August and one anniversary. Birthdays include Sharon Thornsberry on the 7th, George Mitchell (Top Dog) on the 11th, Hampton Crimi (Sambo) on the 20th. Our August wedding anniversary is for George and Peggy Sue Mitchell on the 3rd. 

udging by the empty seats at our Tuesday breakfasts it appears that the mass exodus by our sno-nobles to that never-never land known as up north has occurred. Up north could be Jacksonville or Tallahassee to we yearrounders. There also is an area probably covered with snow and ice referred to as the panhandle. Anything farther incurs the risk of falling off the planet. We stay at home Floridians will brave the 90+ degree heat and humidity, stoically face mother nature’s tantrums known as hurricanes and be entertained by dazzling nightly electrical displays, that bestow on Florida the title, lightening capital of the country. Does not get any better than that. Cannot understand why you all leave. Last article described unpleasant news for some North Port Shrine Club nobles but it appears problems are still with us. Lady Wally Somerville still suffering with severe back problems, as is Lady Maddy Watson. It is reported that Noble Sam Cohen will be facing back surgery. (As of this writing Sam is back home.) Noble Don Gatrell is recuperating at home from an accident and not in the best shape according to Lady Marilyn and Past Potentate Tom Millaway suffered a mild stroke and is in the hospital. Moreover, your Scribe is still peering at the world through one eye and depending on Lady Kitty for all transportation needs. Enough already! This article will go to press before our scheduled June 28 mixer at the Olive Garden. Although our numbers are reduced, the members that attend undoubtedly will enjoy the camaraderie and feasting that our North Port Shrine Club is known for. Picnics at a local park are coming up in July and August. Chili and gumbo for the first and barbecued chicken and pork on the second. Sound good? Then why not give us a try. We have a membership application just for you. Not very much happening to add to this month’s

report. It’s the slow season don’t you know, but things will pick up when our sno-nobles no longer can endure their absence from the “best Shrine Club in the world” and scurry back. Some time ago there was a TV news segment called, “Where in the world is?” Matt Lauer I think. North Port Shrine Club has its own version, “Where in the world is 1st Vice President Al Sawdai?” We do know he was carousing around Machu Picchu last year, but what about now? We should have a world map with stickpins to keep track. (Bits and Pieces) Did you know there once was a Masonic automobile? In 1917, three prominent men from the Cleveland area, members of the local Knights Templar, founded a company to produce their car appropriately called the “Templar” and incorporated the Order’s Maltese cross in its logo. The Templar was powered by an OHV 43hp 197 cubic inch engine and was classified as a “touring roadster” with a price of $2,185. Also offered was a $3,295 five-passenger sedan with a custom built aluminum body, solid pillar two-door type, offered in any desired color scheme or upholstery. Standard equipment included silk curtains, silver hardware, dome light, reading lights, vanity case smoking set, flower vase and Perfection heater. Sadly, the last “Templar” rolled out of the factory in 1924. Noble L. Stefanos provided this information. Thanks Stef. (See photo) (Quotable Notable) Since there was no Reporter for July, we will repeat the QN for August. What writer said, “We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office”? The first non-member to correctly identify this QN and respond to the above email or call (941) 426-0743 will receive a breakfast for two as guests of the North Port Shrine Club. 

SHRINE UNIT NEWS Legion of Honor by Malcolm H. VanDyke II, sahibloh@comcast.net

N

ow that I am the Jr. Past FSA Legion of Honor Commander, I can devote my time to LOH article writing for The Reporter. Our Flag Retirement Program continues to do well. Keep up the good work and turn in your old tired-faded-ripped-torn flags, in a plastic or brown paper bag, to the Sahib Aides Office where I collect them weekly. If you do not already know this or guessed this then it is my sad news to inform you that the Sahib Legion of Honor Unit has sunk to a new and nasty low. Your Sahib LOH Unit is no longer an active parade or marching unit. Sad...is it not? Several years ago, we gave up the long trailer for a Sahib seven-passenger golf cart. We assumed responsibility for its maintenance and cleaning. Alas, we could not even get seven passengers to ride on it. Now we no longer have the finances to maintain the golf cart nor any LOH noble interested in riding on it at local parades, so on April 20, I wrote a long letter to the Recorder and Potentate informing them of such. So, we no longer have any way to carry LOH nobles in parades. However, we do still have the capability to carry the American Flag in parades and to perform our indoors functions at Sahib, albeit just barely. Our LOH Officers are down to a bare few too. Your LOH currently has openings for Chaplain and Quartermaster Officer. Both easy jobs but we cannot even get anybody interested in filling those two offices. The recent past FSA LOH Convention held at Sahib Shriners this year was a rousing success although only PC Chuck Barrett, 1st Lt. Commander Giles Light, Sahib Finance Officer Jim Koehler and Bill Summerfield helped me out plus the priceless help of the Legionettes. To them I tip my Fez for many hours of dedicated help and work. FSA LOH Chaplain and PC Chuck Barrett conducted the Necrology Service where we honored 11 LOH nobles statewide who have died in the past year. To cap off a stunning service he got a live bugler from Sarasota Military Academy to blow “taps” for us. I do have to thank Bill Balkwill and especially his Sarasota Military Academy math teacher wife Lady Gail for helping us out there. Wow…was that young man impressive, but then why not, as he is West Point bound; having been accepted at all three military academies. The newly rewritten and revised Sahib Legion of Honor by-laws have been approved by the Potentate after making them politically correct and we were going to implement the new quorum rule at the April meeting.

Guess what? Not even enough LOH nobles showed up at the meeting to meet the new lower quorum numbers. You may see me to get your free copy of the new bylaws. It has gotten to the point where Sahib LOH must consider whether to keep paying per capita taxes to two higher authorities or go dark. Our unit is dark now for the summer months but I will bring up the subject at our September meeting. That is if we can get enough nobles to open the meeting. Please plan on attending the September meeting where I will appoint a committee to investigate the possibility of taking the Sahib LOH Unit permanently dark. In that vein, I am utterly stunned by the total lack of support from Past Commanders in attending monthly meetings or support for the recent past FSA LOH Convention. Perhaps that is why we are on the verge of darkness. On a different track how many military jumpers do we have in our LOH Unit or non-LOH Unit airborne qualified soldiers? Commonly called “hanky poppers” or other unprintable names. Are you aware that the old tried and true T-10 Parachute has been retired? Jumping with the new T-11 is far different. A slower descent and zero oscillation because of the new square design that will carry 400 pounds of soldier and equipment. Reduces jumper injury by over 75%, adjusts to fit all body sizes from the 5th percentile female jumper to the 97th percentile male. The Ft. Hood massacre killed 13 and wounded 32 people. Initially no Purple Hearts were authorized or awarded because the US Army said no combat was involved. My, my, how times change. Now days, not only do we have amputees on active duty and teaching at West Point, amputees on active jump status and in Ranger Units, but now Congress has awarded all those killed or wounded at Ft. Hood the Purple Heart. Hooah! When was the last time you saw an “Osprey” like an all-black one with no markings or tail number? I saw one the other day nesting on the front lawn of SOC Headquarters at MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. In 2007, Time magazine called the V-22 “A Flying Shame.” Now this $84 million dollar half-airplane, half-helicopter has become one of America’s most crucial weapons. Now the V-22 is used somewhere around the world nearly every night to carry “special operators” such as Navy SEALs on counterterrorism raids or other secret missions. Keep in touch! 

Oriental Band by Jim Austin, jau1060866@aol.com

H

ere it is August already. I will bet you are getting a little tired of the heat, as we in the Oriental Band are. We do not do much in the summer, as all of our members are either traveling or stay close to a swimming pool that they can jump in on occasion. We have planned a painting party as our float is getting a little tired looking. No doubt, it will look spiffy when we take to the parade route this fall and winter. We still practice our songs, but just not as often in the summer. After all, we are the best Oriental Band in Florida. Why do we really need to practice? This month our featured bandsman is our fearless music leader, Floyd LaDue. Floyd was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in July of 1944, which makes him one of the youngest members in the Oriental Band. His father moved the family to Aruba where he worked in the oil business. His education took place in the New Jersey area and it is where he met, eloped and married his high school sweetheart. This did not take and they divorced after they produced a son and daughter. An early employer was Sunshine Biscuit in the Lyndhurst area. He watched the Giant’s Football Stadium being built in the Meadowlands from his place of work. He

is a real jack-of-all-trades. He went into industrial engineering and helped design machines that did a number of things like wrapping, counting, etc. He then ran a high-class limousine company where he met many famous people, then went into custom car painting, then up to New Hampshire (Manchester) where he taught skiing. When he decided to move to Florida, he was the director of maintenance for the Salvation Army in Sarasota. He holds the same position for Meals on Wheels in Bradenton now. His Masonic work started in 1965 at Gavel Lodge No. 273. This year in May, he returned to get his 50-year pin. For really important things, he joined our happy group in about 2003. Like most of us, he started on a drum. When Harry Falck decided to give up being our musical director, Harry recommended Floyd be the new director, and so it came to pass. Floyd has rejuvenated the group and through his many talents and dedication, we have become one of the best small bands in the country, winning a first place in all but a few contests we have had. I feel we have been very fortunate. Until next month. 

obles and brothers, we are having a Full Ceremonial this fall. It will be Wednesday, September 16, Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19 will be the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa trip and the Building of the Arch. All of the Shriners whom have been created in 2015 and all the candidates awaiting creation are to attend with their ladies as well as every Shriner who can ride, walk or crawl to the temple. Let us make this a truly grand Ceremonial with all the pomp, circumstance and fun that we can muster. Let us welcome our new nobles with a great turnout to see them created with a hearty welcome to the world’s greatest fraternal organization. Each club and unit has committed to two new members in 2015. Membership is the lifeblood of Sahib Shriners; that Black Camel seldom takes a day off so we must outrun him by inviting all good men to join us in our fun, fraternity and philanthropy. Emphasize the fun for whole family that the Shrine does so well, to

each of your prospective nobles. That is something that we do much better than the Lodge does and can really make the families feel part of the Masonic experience. If you or your club or unit needs petitions or has petitions to turn in, contact me immediately at <revdore@gmail.com> or call me at (941) 320-8291. If you would like me to make a call to a prospect, I will be glad to do so, just give me their contact information. I will be in each Lodge in District 27 in September presenting our story to the Blue Lodges. With the great growth of most of our Lodges, there are good prospects in these Lodges. Why not visit your local lodge in September and sit in Lodge with your brothers and show them that we care; that we have not forgotten that we are first Masons and second Shriners. Sahib can expect the Blue Lodge’s support only if we support them with our attendance and our work. 

New Procedure for Divan’s Birthday Wish Nobles your birthday will now be listed in the Reporter. Masonic Digest Scottish Rite by Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH, cfletcher@palletone.com

S

tudying Masonic ritual can lead in many directions and open many a window in the house of learning. Our ritual finds its origin in a variety of literature. That literature in turn introduces us to a variety of teachers and philosophers. Foremost, our studies might lead us back into the Volume of Sacred Law. Our founding legend is derived from it. Our journey through the Blue Lodge and through numerous appendant bodies often follows the Biblical narrative. We reacquaint ourselves with Biblical characters, Boaz, Ruth, the two Hirams and Solomon, Jesus, John of Patmos, Zerubbabel and many others. Our work, however, is derived from many sources outside the biblical narrative. We are exposed to many wise teachers and philosophers. Though not mentioned by name, Socrates speaks to us at the beginning of the Entered Apprentice lecture. The symbol of light in the lecture appears to come from Plato’s writings, particularly Timaeus. The four cardinal virtues are discussed thoroughly in the Aristotle’s Ethics and Cicero’s On Moral Duties. The discussion of clay as a masonic symbol, toward the end of the lecture, seems to come from Pliny the Elder’s Natural History. Moreover, this is just the First Degree! At the risk of being obvious, our ancient brethren were well read and not just in the Volume of Sacred Law. Recently discovered from one ancient writing are five conditions for establishing and maintaining stable and just societies. They have a familiarity about them. First, the citizenry must be well educated, especially in ancient literature and texts. Second, government leaders must exemplify moral behavior. Third, basic

etiquette must be exhibited and traditional rituals must be performed. Next, individuals must also exemplify moral behavior and virtue, especially kindness and charity. Finally, each member of society must discover his specific role in society so to rightly perform his specific duties. Each of these values or conditions might remind us of any number of Scottish Rite degrees or portions of Blue Lodge lectures. These five conditions appear in the Analects, the teachings of Confucius recorded by his students around the 5th or 6th century BC. Confucius encouraged a return to the morals of the past and the ethics of the ancient sages. This all sounds pretty Masonic and indeed, it is. The teachings of Confucius are referred to at least 17 times in Morals and Dogma. As we study our ritual and investigate the philosophy behind it, we learn from many sources. What we learn provides reinforcement of the values and lessons offered in our degrees about morality, ethics, charity, education, duty and virtue. The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred on October 17 and 24. Petitions are available at http:// tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:45 p.m. dinner. At our August 13 meeting, Noble David Walters, KCCH, will present a program about the 20th Degree, Master of the Symbolic Lodge. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He is discovering that eastern and western philosophy have more in common than they have in differences. 

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNA by Mary Nell Fletcher, High Priestess, floridascarlett@yahoo.com

S

ar-I Court is dark for the summer but still busy at work for the hospitals with our sewing projects and social outings. We just finished with our Grand Council (our National Convention for Ladies Oriental Shrine). I have heard several comments around the Shrine recently about how the LOS has moved away from the Shrine and I would like to clear up a lot of misinformation that has been passed around without the facts. Ladies Oriental Shrine is oldest ladies group that was formed by the wives and daughters of Shriners in the early 1900’s. It was formed by ladies, was run by women before we could vote and still today, our board of directors, officers and members have always been a totally autonomous organization. To be a member today, you may be related to a Mason, Shriner or vouched for by two members in good standing of LOSNA. (This is the same as to become a Mason. You do not have to have Masonic background to become a Mason). We have an investigation committee and are voted on by the membership, the same as the men. One of the reasons change was necessary was due to the closing of many Masonic Lodges and records were lost on members. In many cases, our ladies had Masonic affiliations but could not prove that they did. Also, we had numerous requests from Shriner’s children or their family members who wanted to give back but had no Masonic affiliation and also from women who were adopted. These new members have brought in new members

for the men, as many husbands of those ladies have become Masons and Shriners. Our main philanthropy is Shriners Hospitals for Children but we also give to local charities such as nursing homes, food banks, Masonic Home, children’s organizations, Salvation Army, Shrine Transportation Funds, endowment funds, Shrine projects, etc. Each Court decides where they want to give their funds. This year LOSNA gave $393,883 in cash to Shriners Hospitals for Children and $418,105 worth of articles of clothing, quilts, toys, etc. and an additional $67,000 was given to the Grand High Priestess Special Project in Lexington, Kentucky for x-ray equipment and equipment for the Orthothotic’s Room. Tampa Hospital in our area was given $27,151.84. These numbers do not include the numerous volunteer hours that our ladies have given in sewing or working for the hospitals or numerous community projects. We have donated almost the like amount to community projects. One of our main projects is the “Tab Funds” given across the US and Canada to upgrade wheelchairs as children grow or their needs change for their conditions. We are still very much involved in work for Shriners Hospitals for Children, supporting projects at the Shrine and our community. If you are a lady interested in working for these projects and having fun and fellowship with some wonderful ladies, please give me a call at (941) 807-4011 or talk to one of our ladies. They should all have a petition in their purse. This is truly a great court! 

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of March 31, 2015, they have collected 104,007 lbs., for a total of $54,753.66 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call:
