Chaplain’s corner by the late Rev. Noble Don Kerr

M

oss Hart, the playwright, who died in 1961, wrote his autobiography called “Act One.” In it, he tells a story about his father and the poverty that encircled his life and the desperate times through which Moss Hart and his parents had to suffer. It was Christmas Eve. Father and son had walked along 145th Street in New York. The big stores were brilliant with light. Windows were aglow with colors and ornaments. Pushcarts were laden with toys. The young boy’s eyes were full of anticipation, but Moss Hart knew there was little money for extras. He heard his father’s hand jingle a few coins in his pocket. But, as always, the price was too much. His father’s face showed the disappointment. “It’s all right, Dad,” the son said. “It doesn’t matter. I love you.” On and on they shivered homeward. “I wanted just to put my hand in his,” Moss Hart later recalled, “but we were not on that basis and we walked home in silence. Years later, when Moss Hart visited his father at age 91 in

Florida, it was Christmas Eve again. The two of them sat together on a sofa and looked through the family album of youthful years. Quietly and gently, the father’s hand fell on his sons; it was the first time their lives had met. Two hands touched each other. It was enough. The wall between them had been broken down. Christmas is one of those times when walls can be broken. It is a time to celebrate and touch each other with love, warmth and understanding. That is what it was when God opened the curtains of heaven to let the birth of the Christ-Child shine through so that His hand may be in our hand, joining together in hope, confidence and reassurance. Merry Christmas to all; and for others a cheerful Hanukkah! Forgiveness requested: From last month’s article, Hanukkah, celebrating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, is NOT the Jewish New Year, which was on September 4 in 2013.

ow that I’m nearing the end of my term as Sahib editor, everyone keeps asking me what I’m going to do with my time. As I sit here writing this, I have just come off of more than 15 straight days of 8-10 hour days working on the pocket calendar and the December Reporter, along with all the Website and email projects I work on. Other than the stated meeting and a visit every Thursday at lunch to seek input from nobles for the Reporter and one night out to eat, I have been at this dang computer the whole time. I won’t miss that! I will, however continue to do the Website and email projects. I spend roughly 600-900 hours a year, just on those items.

Thank Heaven, our new editor will not be subjected to these kinds of restrictions and work hours. We have engaged an outside typesetter, who will also do the initial editing of articles. Our new editor will essentially be an information flow manager. My last issue is next month, we sure hope a noble steps up soon, will there even be a February issue? I also hope to do some other things I haven’t had time for. I’d like to take some trips to the hospital with our Roadrunners. I’d like to spend time on family genealogy. Now maybe Bobbi and I can get away for some trips—with deadlines forcing me to be con. . .continued on page 38

Potentate’s Notes

Hello nobles, Here it is Christmas in Florida, warm, sunny days and cool nights. Well, it has been a fun year! Although, I would not want to do it again. I have made many friends and found that Shriners and ladies are compassionate people. We have started the Queen of Hearts, which seems to be fairly successful at least drawing nobles and their ladies into the Shrine on Wednesday evening when we were traditionally slow. There is much socialization and fun leading up to drawing the “right” number. We have had our two musicals, which received lukewarm receptions at best, although, all in attendance enjoyed the show and good music from our “era” and beyond. The Christmas party dates are coming hot and fast, so I’ll say for the month of December, don’t knock on my door because no one is “home.” This is a short note; see you all around the Shrine next year, and with the Greeters for sure. God Bless and have a great Christmas.

God Bless All!

obles, concerning protocol I offer the following for your consideration. On your Divan, There are seven members duly elected to serve for one-year term. The Potentate is the CEO and the six others are of equal status albeit that they have different duties to perform. Five members are progressive and two are stationary. The progressives are in a learning mode, and each year they become more knowledgeable in all facets of the Shrine so that when they become Potentate they are fully prepared to assume the duties and responsibility of leadership.

When all seven members of the Divan are present at a temple, club or unit meeting they are to be at the head table. The chief aide has a proper seating arrangement and is responsible for the seating in a protocol manner. This might ease the fact of embarrassment if you are not knowledgeable on protocol. Protocol is very important, and it should be followed, to be correct. Remember you can always ask, and a Divan member will help you. This Shrine and Imperial Shrine relies on doing the proper arrangement for any of their functions and let us all comply. Shrine law is important. Let us not forget our Blue Lodge.

Chief Rabban’s notes by Rocky Kearney, divehog@comcast.net

W

ell, here we are, the last month of the year. Time for holiday parties, welcoming the rest of our Snowbles back, spending time with the family and preparing for 2014. There is much to do to get things rolling in the New Year. Our first big event will be the installation of the 2014 Divan, unit and club presidents on Friday, January 3. If the clubs and units do not have plans to get their officers installed, this will be by far the simplest solution. Halfway through the month is the Shrine’s East/West Game. I know this is over a month away but it is time to make plans.

There has been talk about restarting the Camel Herders Unit. Sahib spends a good chunk of cash each month to have our grounds kept up. Well, a group of our nobles would like to see this money put to better use, feel that this is their temple and would like to give their time and outside skills to meet and groom our grounds. There will be announcements in the near future on when we shall meet to start planning our strategy to fulfill this mission. I will keep this month’s article short; but, from my Lady Wendy and me, we want to wish everyone Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and a very Prosperous New Year.

Assistant Rabban’s notes by Connie Jacobi, chjacobi38@aol.com

A

s of this writing, I would like to thank my Lady Deanie and daughter Connie R. along with Bingo Chairman Jack Ivins, his Lady Marilyn and their teams for their outstanding walk for the Susan G. Komen Tampa Bay Three-Day for the Cure of Breast Cancer. All the Shriners and friends, who supported them, thank you! I hope that in the near future they find a cure for this awful disease. God bless all that supported them and God bless all the walkers and crew. This was the last three-day for Tampa Bay. Now on with the article. Wow, where has 2013 gone? Is it me or did I just finish the last payment for Christmas 2012? The years are passing too fast. Thanksgiving dinner at the Shrine was great. Chefs Bob and Richard did an outstanding job. Cannot forget our bar staff, they made sure we had whatever we wanted from our bar. We are very lucky to have our own kitchen and bar staff. Let us not forget the office staff; they are always there to help. It has been a good year for me and I am very proud to be a member of the greatest Shrine in all of North America. Serving as your Assistant Rabban has been a privilege and I can only say “thanks” for entrusting the job to me. Being on the Divan has been a great learning

and an eye opening experience. Working with such a great group of Sahib nobles is a pleasure. We always strive to make things better for “Our Shrine and for Our Kids”. I have enjoyed being with the nobles of all the units and clubs who made us feel at home whenever Deanie and I were able to be with you. Thanks to all the units, clubs and nobles who worked the Dog Track on November 1. It was a great way for them to make a few extra dollars. Many thanks also to the Sarasota Dog Track. Be sure to get your Queen of Hearts ticket for the drawing every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. It is a chance to win big bucks and you can win drink tickets. Have dinner with a friend and enjoy your Shrine. Happy Holidays to all our Shrine staff members. The holiday parties and parades will soon start and Lady Deanie and I want to wish everyone and your family, a Merriest Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season and a healthy 2014. Especially if you are traveling, have a very safe and a joyous Christmas Holiday Season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Stay healthy and remember those who are not!

ope you were able to join your fellow Shriners, ladies and friends at the Motor Corps’ Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, November 17. We served over 300 plates of spaghetti. Big thanks to all who helped make this event a success. In addition to our dinner guests, we thank Motor Corps members, fellow Shriners, our ladies and all volunteers, to include the Rainbow Girls and DeMolay who helped. The Spaghetti dinner also afforded us an opportunity to begin sales on our Booze Wagon. This was one of our first events for the Booze Wagon, so rest assured we’ll have even more top shelf beverages in the wagon over the next several weeks. In case you are wondering, I observed bottles of Maker’s Mark and Jim Beam Bourbon, as well as some other premium spirits. Elections for 2014 Motor Corps officers were held after The Reporter went to press. We will report the results in the January 2014 issue. s we head into the holiday season, which the merchants have started in October, we might consider revamping the calendar and move Christmas to August, we don’t have snow anyway so we can delete “White Christmas,” and avoid the December shopping insanity. Of course this will confuse the bejesus out of Santa and Rudolph but what the hey; Florida is kooky anyhow and it will save him a trip down the peninsula. We do trust that all had a truly thankful Thanksgiving. We, if we stop to think about it, do have much to be thankful for, we have our families, our country, our fraternity, our Sahib Shrine and Shrine Club. I’d say that’s rather considerable and if you are in good health that’s another big plus. Our Reporter Editor Gary Schweinshaupt is retiring after so many years dedicated to seeing to the publishing of the Sahib Shriners Reporter. So many Sahib Shriners members owe so much to him; to reuse a cliché “his is one tough act to follow.” Thanks, Gary! Along with other “incidents,” this may put North Port Shrine Club in the running for the prestigious “clumsy” award. Our “Snonobles” are still trickling back and we expect a full complement for the New Year. As we did bid you goodbye before we now bid you “willkommen, bienvenue, bienvenida, kon’nichiwa, zapraszmy, failte, shalom and welcome back. New officers are to be nominated and elected, Our annual Christmas Gala will take place December 8 at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port but unfortunately Lady Kitty and I will be absent as we are always out of town during the first two weeks of December, c’est la vie! The month of November saw our annual “Veterans Remembrance” program to thank the North Port Shrine Club veterans for their service to our country. Our Shrine club’s incentive program reward is growing due to no winners lately. On October 1 Noble Chris DePass (a winner previously) a non-winner, October 8 unknown a non-winner, October 15 Bill Athas non-winner, October 22 Bob Humphrey nonwinner, October 29, a winner, Noble “Wheatie” a previous big winner. Congrats Wheatie! North Port Shrine Club is pleased to announce that Noble Donald S. Blankley from Pennsylvania and Lulu Shriners is our newest member; welcome aboard Noble Don! Also announced, Noble Don Gatrell hit the big 75 and is now officially a member of the “Nobles over the hill gang.” Noble Don White is back with us after serious surgery and a stay in the hospital.

At our October 29 breakfast our revamped parade float was on display in the parking lot; a fine job by President Jim Gates and volunteers, photo on next page. Our club’s magazine program is now under the care of Noble Al Sawdai and any nobles who will assist. Please bring your magazines to him effective immediately. Pull-tabs are still being collected; bring ‘em in! The Masonic license plate program is progressing and we urge all Brothers to obtain the necessary “voucher” to propel the program forward. Members have received information from Noble Sam Cohen on how to procure the “voucher.” It’s painless. As usual our North Port Masonic Lodge No. 406 meets the second and fourth Wednesdays at Farley Funeral Home, North Port, and at the risk of being repetitious we urge all area Brothers to make 406 your Lodge away from home. In addition, we can happily report that the Lodge “Octoberfest”, attended by Lodge members and North Port Shrine Club nobles was, as predicted, a tremendous success. Present were W:.M:. Andy Wormington, Sr. Warden Mike Cullen, Sr. Deacon Richard McMullen, Secretary and cook Sam Cohen, Treasurer PP Tom Millaway, Chaplain and cook Jack Watson, Jr. Steward Mark Yates and his Lady North Port Mayor Linda, Chief Rabban Rocky Kearney and PP Charles Levan 33°. Apologies to any I’ve left out (memory is shot along with mind). During the festivities a “Widows Certificate” was presented by the Grand Lodge of Florida to Bobby Shuman lady of Noble Sol Shuman who was visited by the Black Camel some time ago. Also acknowledged likewise was Betty Adams whose husband was a Charter Member of the North Port Shrine Club. “Bits & Pieces”, hungry for some Oriental food? From Japan: A Japanese chef has opened a restaurant in Tokyo serving dishes whose featured ingredient is dirt! The six-course tasting menu begins with a soil soup, ends with a light soil sorbet accompanied by a sweet dirt gratin, and costs each diner around $110. The owner says all his dirt is screened for harmful substances prior to cooking, and is full of healthy minerals. (Sayonara, pal). Quotable Notable: As of this writing, no one has identified the October QN as Art Buchwald who said “If you attack the establishment long enough they will make you a member of it.” For December, what writer said “Everyone is a damn fool for at least five minutes every day. Wisdom consists in not exceeding that limit.” The first non-club Brother who contacts the above email or calls (941) 426-0743 with the correct answer will win a breakfast for two as guests of the North Port Shrine Club.

The East-West Shrine Game: Furthering a Mission Since 1925 The East-West Shrine Game® is the longest running college all-star game in the country. A staple in college football since 1925, the game has consistently proven to be a launch pad for players seeking professional careers in the NFL. More than 100 players from the 88th East-West Shrine Game signed with professional football teams in 2013. On average, more than 275 East-West Shrine Game alumni are on professional rosters each year. The game provides a crucial platform for college athletes to demonstrate their ability to play at the next level. The game’s Executive Director and former NFL coach, Harold Richardson, is confident in the game’s exposure to the appropriate decision makers. “With all 32 NFL teams represented by GMs, coaches and scouts during the week of the game, our players have the terrific opportunity to showcase their talents and get their first glimpse of the NFL.”

of the game. “Going to the hospital was a very humbling experience,” said 2013 East-West Shrine Game alumni and newly signed Baltimore Raven, Trent Steelman. “Those kids have more courage and tenacity than any football player I know; and that I will never forget.” The 89th annual East-West Shrine Game will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network with a kickoff time of 4 p.m. EST. To learn more about the East-West Shrine Game and to order tickets and ticket packages, please visit shrinegame.com.

Since the very first players secured their helmets and laced up their cleats in San Francisco’s Ewing Field nearly 90 years ago at the very first East-West Shrine Game, 71 former East-West Shrine Game alumni have been honored with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and more than 200 into the College Football Hall of Fame. Many of the NFL’s most recognized and decorated athletes, including Tom Brady, Brett Favre and John Elway, all started on the East-West gridiron. Supporting a Mission In addition to serving as one of the NFL’s primary sources for eligible players, the game benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children®, and helps support its mission of providing expert care to children in need, conducting innovative research and offering educational opportunities to medical professionals. East-West Shrine Game activities include a visit to a Shriners Hospital, which gives the players the opportunity to witness firsthand the true purpose OSJUNE13TEWS

To my fellow nobles, nobles to be, Master Masons that are thinking about becoming a Shriner and your ladies and those thinking of becoming a Mason. In November, we met again at the Tara Golf and Country Club in Bradenton as will future dinners until future notice. Our speaker for the evening was David Pilston, CEO of Save Our Seabirds located in Sarasota; a real interesting presentation. We have decided that we will not hold a gettogether in December as there are so many other parties taking place. Instead, our members and their ladies are encouraged to attend Sahib’s Unit & Club Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 18. Would appreciate when you attend the affair you come in your Kentucky Colonel attire if you have it. That is one great way to advertise our unit. Our monthly get-together takes place the third Thursday of each month getting together to socialize

at 5:30 p.m. and then at 6:00 p.m. starting the evening’s festivities. We expect to be back in full swing on January 16, 2014 at the Tara Golf and Country Club. Mark your calendars now so you do not forget. When was the last time you attended a Kentucky Colonel get-together? Oooh, you say you never have. Do you have any idea what you have been missing? I could tell you that the camaraderie is definitely a plus. I could tell you of the great speakers and entertainers we have had. I could tell you about the very nice reception the facility gives us as well as great food and great service that we have been privileged to have. However, I will not because I think you and your lady (if you have one) need to come and personally check us out. Have you seen any of us in our Kentucky Colonel attire? Come and find out what we are about and enjoy the fun we have at the same time. If you are a current member we thank you and hope you are coming regularly and, if not, please try to add us back in your schedule. If you have not been at all, please visit us and check us out. I do feel that once you come you will want to return. By the way, reservations are necessary so let us know and we will email you a flyer or Jim will let you know the options; please contact Col. Jim Jensen. We look forward to having you at our functions as a member or visitor. Remember ladies are always invited and reservations are a must. Hope to see you soon.

or the first time in many years, the Oriental Band has failed to participate in the Venice Sun Fiesta Parade. Two of our horn players were out of town due to previous commitments. In order to present a full program we need at least two players. Again, we are actively pursuing new band members, especially ones that would be willing to learn how to play a “Musette”(horn). We want to profile one of our founding members, who has done so much for the “Great Sahib Oriental Band.” Harry W. Falck, Jr. was born October 14, 1923 in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania. He turned 90 years old this year. Harry met Betty Smith at the age of 15, while he attended Randolph Macon Academy in Virginia. He enlisted into the Army Air Corps in December 1942 at the age of 19. After a couple of years he

was commissioned as a flight officer and co-pilot to fly B-24’s. Harry and Betty got married on October 20, 1944, before he was sent overseas. He was stationed in Italy, flying ten missions. Betty and Harry have three daughters, Pamela, Debby and Wendy. After the war, Harry earned an accounting degree and worked in the family soap business. In 1956, the Falck Family moved to Sarasota, where he earned a real estate broker’s license and a contractor’s license. Harry became a Master Mason in 1945 in Pittsburg and a member of Pittsburgh Syria Shriners in 1946. He is a member of the Scottish and York Rites. He demitted from Syria Shrine in 1957 and joined Egypt Shrine in Tampa. There he joined the Oriental Band and served as its music director until 1981. Harry became a charter member of Sarasota

I am also grateful, for him taking the time to teach me how to play this funny looking instrument that I learned to love and would never give up. Thank you Harry, for being in our corner.

Public Relations by Harold Eady, Director, hjeady@comcast.net

I

n 2006 when our Potentate Homer Cranmer was addressing the nobles at one of our Thursday lunches, he expressed the need for a Public Relations Chairman. After lunch, I discussed the position with Homer and to make the story short, I took on the job. That was seven years ago. After the first three years, we began looking for a replacement and we got one in Bob Dell who at that time was the Speaker Bureau Chairman. Bob did a very good job; however, sometime later his wife became ill and he had to resign. I took on the job again with the understanding of subsequent Potentates; they would find a replacement (which never happened). At the beginning of this year, we had a resignation of our Luncheon Speaker Chairman and our Potentate asked me if I would consider taking on that position along with Public Relations as he was unable to find anyone for either job. I did so. However, I did make it

clear that 2013 would be my last year as Public Relations Director. At our October and November club/unit head meetings I announced my resignation as of January 1 and that I would be continuing as the Thursday Luncheon Speaker Chairman. So now the question is who out there will step up to the plate and take on the important Public Relations responsibility for Sahib? Whoever it might be I will assist in any way needed in the transition. It is not a difficult or complicated job and if you have basic computer understanding and enjoy talking with people, it is a breeze. Interested parties should contact our Potentate Bill Zurlo, Chief Rabban Rocky Kearney or me. As this will be my last column, I want to say it has been fun and mostly enjoyable to get out the message of Shriners and our Shriners Hospitals for Children.

asino Night, unfortunately it was necessary to cancel the Casino Night scheduled for Friday evening, November 1. The interest and enthusiasm of many people was outdone by the seemingly lack of worker interest in helping with the necessary preparations leading up to the event such as seeking prizes and taking part in the training sessions. Slow ticket sales were also a deciding factor. Several people gave notice that they would not be able to attend the training sessions because of conflicting schedules, but the majority either simply forgot or had no interest. Many were disappointed at the cancellation as they were looking forward to this event. Thanks go out to all who did help and encourage our efforts in any way. Perhaps we can revitalize this event at some point in the future. Sarasota Kennel Club, each year we have been afforded the opportunity to sell entrance tickets at the opening day races of the Sarasota Kennel Club. The proceeds of our tickets sales are shared by the participating units and clubs on a pro rata basis. This allows units and clubs with limited income resources to help replenish their treasuries. Thanks go to all those nobles and ladies who came out this year. This year the opening was on Friday, November 1. I un-

derstand this was an experiment (usually the opening day is toward the end of November) and whether the early opening will continue next year has not yet been decided. Sarasota officials dedicate opening day to Sahib Shriners. They allow us to name races for various Sahib units and clubs and honor our Potentate and all Shriners at a featured Potentate’s race in the evening session. This year it was an honor to accompany Potentate Bill Zurlo when he was introduced at completion of the 10th evening race. It also was gratifying to hear Shriners International and our philanthropy recognized over the loud speaker and for the applause, thanks and many favorable comments of the race fans present. I even gave out one of High Priest &Prophet Carroll Scribner’s handy informational handouts and one of my cards to an inquisitive gentleman. Who knows, it may lead to a new Mason and Shriner someday. I would only hope that in future years we could have a bigger presence of nobles throughout the day during the races to help promote our cause. May you all enjoy this holiday season and prepare yourselves for a fantastic Sahib New Year in 2014.

S

anta is round the corner, trees are going up, the season Holy to many faiths is upon us! A time of repentance, of atonement, of joy, of forgiveness, of recognition that all faiths regardless of how they approach their Supreme Being are truly but one! A very Merry Christmas to all! May this be our year to grow our Shrine and our membership to new heights. A belated Happy Hanukkah to my many friends who celebrated this holy season in November this year! May you and your family have a blessed year! To all, a happy and prosperous New Year. We are off soon on another year of activities, some of which I am sure will delight you and others will confound you. Change, no matter how slight, is never easy, but it must happen if an organization is to live! What have I been up to so far? My usual egg scrambling with the King Pins. We could use some

help with this once a month. There are many jobs to be done and we will find one that suits your talents. Many Shrine Club visits; there is never enough time to do all, so I try to skip around! Membership is still our—yours and mine, first priority! We will have a net loss again this year, even though this has been one of the better years lately. We cannot keep up with the Black Camel! I say again, until we see more help from the nobility, we will continue with negative numbers. Eventually we will have to shut the doors. This is not alarmist incitement to get your attention; it is fact! It is your choice. With that in mind, let me again remind you— Replace yourself—each one get one! I am about out of words for now. I will try to be more positive next month. If I can help you at all, give me a call (941) 488-4363.

s we head into the holiday season, it is also time to remember what this season is all about; giving and being thankful. Giving to those in need and being thankful for what we have. We thank God for that. Happy Holidays. December and January are a time of transition; this change is an inevitable part of our daily lives. In response to transition, we adapt, we adjust, as we move forward. This month we will nominate and elect officers for the next year. The foundation of leadership, established at our Shrine level, will rise throughout our organization. If you ever considered being an officer or a unit/club leader, I encourage you to step forward now and transform your thoughts into action. It is an opportunity of a lifetime and will provide you with friends and experiences that you will never forget. “Go for it!”

Finally, I said this once before, we, as a Shrine, owe Editor Gary Schweinshaupt, KCCH and his Lady Bobbi many thanks for their tireless commitment to The Reporter. The Sahib Reporter is the best magazine in all of Shrinedom. I know, wherever I go, we get nothing but compliments about The Reporter. So make sure you say “thank you and wish them well.” I want to personally thank everyone for their support last year as I learned my position (well I thought I did) and a few other responsibilities. Thank you! Congratulations to all of you who made the last year so successful and will make the next year a wonderful and fulfilling year so that Sahib Shrine will continue to be a “Beacon of Hope” for all. Remember, support the Shrine and keep a child in your heart!

things in life as he loved the common people. “Everyone has deep in his heart, the old town or community where he first went barefooted, got his first licking, traded the first pocket knife, grew up and finally went away thinking he was too big for that Burg. But that’s where your heart is.” “What constitutes a life well spent?” he once questioned. “Love and admiration from our fellowmen is all that anyone can ask.” A proper answer from a man whose famous quote stands like a granite monument as to how he believed and who he was: “I’ve joked about every prominent man of my time, but I never met a man I didn’t like.” This energetic, plain spoken, bowlegged, beloved Brother Mason’s life ended entirely too soon, when on August 15, 1935, he was killed in a tragic airplane crash near the lonely Alaskan outpost of Point Bar-

Yet his heart remained in those bygone days of the open range land, and his eyes were forever fixed upon the horizon of Faith, Hope and Charity, things that Masonry strives to keep alive. Though Brother Will lived the last several years of his life in the fast-paced world of Hollywood and rubbed elbows with the powerful and famous, as he rambled and joked his way across the length and breadth of the earth, he remained the plain, easy going, unpretentious country boy. row with famed aviator Brother Wiley Post. One must wonder “what if?” What if we had Brother Will’s insightful wisdom for the years to come, for he had such an influence, not only on this country, but the entire world as well? He detested dictators and intolerance and said so in a manner that everyone could understand. He was a proud man with deep convictions—convictions born on the Oklahoma prairies, honed in the Lodge Halls of Freemasonry and polished as a learned citizen of the world. His good friend and Brother Mason Eddie Cantor, wrote of his passing: “Will Rogers was probably the most beloved man of our time. He was one man in the entertainment world who more than balanced by his exemplary life any of the scandals involving people of the theater. He was the most charitable, most tolerant man I have ever known. There wasn’t an atom of envy in his system.”

Page 23

Thus, my question is answered. The bond between Brother Will and myself, as well as with all of us who can claim membership in the Ancient and Honorable Society of Freemasonry, is greater than the span of time. The cement that binds us together goes beyond any religious, social or political status and propels us to be Brethren of a truly miraculous Fraternity. We as Masons today can and should look to our glorious past and to Brothers like Will Rogers. He was, by no means perfect, just a good common man who achieved uncommon good for himself and the world around him. He lived for the betterment of his fellowman. He knew from “Whence He Came:” we should know the same. Brother Will once remarked: “They may call me a ‘rube’ and a ‘hick’, but I’d a lot rather be the man who bought the Brooklyn Bridge than the man who sold it.” To me, that sums up the philosophy of this man and Mason. To me, that is Will Rogers. I’m proud to call him BROTHER! Bro. T. L. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach. Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable bylaws: §335.3 USE OF NAME “SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited. §503.11 The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained. Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: 1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof. (b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. (c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it com- plies with §335.3 and §503.11 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws. (d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws. (e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International. Further, such written material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive Vice President, Shriners International shall be promptly mailed to him. 2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Permission therefore must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees. This request for written per- mission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356. No charitable fundraising activity shall be held in the jurisdiction of another temple without the written permission of the Potentate of that temple. A joint charitable fundraising activity with another 501(c)(3) charity may be authorized provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity. A charitable fundraising activity conducted by a temple located outside of the U.S.A may be authorized for other charities, provided that the chairmen of the board of directors and trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity.

(b) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fund Raising- Approval And

Reporting provisions of the current General Order) from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of the current General Order. Provided, however, if the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children, grant their written permission for such distribution. (c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundraising activity within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fund Raising– Approval And Reporting provision of the current General Order. (d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of Shriners International. (e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements reviewed pursuant to §334.6 & §337.8 of the bylaws of Shriners International, shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to Shriners International within 120 days of the activity. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure: (a) Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on its solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically transmitted materials, regarding the use of the proceeds. Examples: “Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Shriners) ( Shrine Club) activities.” “Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.” (b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets, programs, documents and electronically transmitted material that “payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.” (c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any existing general order by U.S. temples. Compliance with Applicable Laws: It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities. Financial Records: (a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining to all fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles and affiliated and appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records. (b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven (7) years. (c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Chari- table Funds and Activities provision of the current general order. Notification to Nobility: A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of the current general order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year. Discipline: Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of Shriners International.

December 2013 . . .continued from page 49 Brother Will Rogers and hired out to the great sharp-shooter as a trick rope artist, Billed as the “Cherokee Kid,” he went on to acquire fame for his roping stunts and after a tour of Australia and New Zealand, he returned to the States and in a matter of years, he was a star on Broadway. He would later add wise and witty homespun sayings to his rope spinning and go on to become a headliner on the Ziegfeld Follies. Will Rogers’ star would continue to shine ever brighter as he became a world renown entertainer. Throughout his illustrious career he was a top box office draw of stage and screen, popular radio personality, preeminent political sage and humorist as well as being the most widely read newspaper columnist of his time. “The Cowboy Philosopher,” as he was known, conveyed thoughts and kept watch over the conscience of this great nation, like no other person before or since. With a shy grin, a wad of chewing gum in his jaw and a cowlick over his forehead, he became the quintessential American.

But there is more to the story. My question hasn’t been answered. Why the bond that I spoke of at the beginning of this text? Little did I know as a boy that this bond, this cement that tied me to this great American would be spread by a Mason’s Trowel. Brother Will Rogers was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason in Claremore Lodge No. 53, A. F. & A. M., Claremore, Indian Territory, on March 13,1906. The year 1906 was very early in the career of Brother Will as an entertainer, but it is evident that the teachings and precepts of our Order made a profound impression and played an important role in the rest of his life, both personally and professionally. It was the lessons he learned as a Mason that helped to mold his character as a great humanitarian and champion of the common man. In 1908, Brother Will married Betty Blake and he would later say about his loving devoted wife: “The day I roped Betty, I did the star performance of my life.” To this union were born four children, Will. Jr., Mary, James and Fred, who died in infancy. Though Brother Will traveled extensively all over the globe, he always put his family first and many times they accompanied him on his journeys. So we find that he traveled in foreign countries to support himself and family, but he also greatly contributed to the relief of others. Beneath the facade of the famous humorist and renowned star beat the heart of a benevolent man and Mason, who always put others before himself, Whenever he saw injustice or arrogance, he spoke out in his “aw shucks” manner. Whenever someone down on his luck approached Will, whether or not he knew him, if he saw the need for charity, he acted upon his Masonic principles. Hence, Brother Will was known as a “soft touch,” a title he relished. When tragedy struck in the form of floods, fires, earthquakes, droughts, famine or whatever, no matter where, he was there, doing anything he could, either with actual money or donating his time and talent at fund raising benefits. In one radio season alone, in 1933, he gave his entire fifty thousand dollar salary, half to the Red Cross and half to the Salvation Army. In the deepest, darkest days of the Great Depression in the early 1930’s, when money was more than scarce and the need at its greatest, Brother Will raised millions of dollars for the relief of others. He always spoke for the underdog, the downtrodden, the less fortunate. “We will never have true civilization,” he said, “until we have learned to recognize the rights of others.” Politicians of both major parties held him in esteem, for they knew all to well that it was he, not they, who represented the voting public. He spoke to American’s hearts with an honesty and clearness of thought that they themselves would have said if given the We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Page 39 chance. Yet he was never arrogant, never pretentious. “I’m for the cut’s and ag’in, the in’s,” he would say. This wasn’t meant as some political statement but as a way

to keep the pompous leaders in their place. He spread the Brotherly Love of our Society along the highways and byways of his wonderful life while at the same time, he exposed the Truth of the human spirit. To put it simply, he was a good man who brought out the good in others. It was these beautiful qualities that rate Brother Will the title “Ambassador of Goodwill.” “This country is not where it is today on account of any one man. It is here on account of the real common sense of the Big Normal Majority.” Brother Will said this and meant it. He spoke the language of the common people, the “Big Normal Majority,” as he called them. He believed in the every day working people, the farmers and ranchers, the family grocer, the shopkeeper, the day laborer and all people everywhere who worked for a living because he knew these people, these “folks,” were the backbone of America. It’s not the millionaires or captains of industry, it’s the common people that have always held this nation together. Brother Will knew this and said so in a rich, twangy voice that was never mean spirited, but always to the point. He believed in progress as long as it helped his people, if it made their lives a little easier, he was for it. He was a staunch supporter of air flight and knew it would some day be of great benefit to the working people he so eloquently championed. He also believed the auto. . .continued on page 22

Continued Excellence in Pediatric Orthopaedic Care a wide range of conditions, including hip problems, foot deformities, limb deficiencies and discrepancies, spinal deformities, osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), and the orthopaedic difficulties associated with neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy. Sophisticated Technology and Techniques At 12 of our facilities, the orthopaedic physicians and clinical staff have access to movement analysis laboratories. These high-tech labs use a system of reflective markers, high-speed cameras and computers to develop a model of a child’s walking pattern that can provide data to assist the medical team in recommending the best treatment plan. In addition to innovative treatments and therapies, several Shriners Hospitals for Children have inhouse orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) departments capable of creating a full range of devices. The O&P teams collaborate closely with the physicians, nurses and occupational and physical therapists to achieve the best possible outcome for their patients.

Since our first hospital opened its doors in 1922, providing care for orthopaedic conditions has been the foundation of Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenÂŽ. The diseases and disorders we treat are wideranging and diverse. However, whether the conditions involved are bone deformities such as clubfoot, neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy or genetic anomalies such as achondroplasia, our goal is to help each child become as healthy and independent as possible. With a large staff of experienced pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, as well as a comprehensive team of physical, occupational, speech and other therapists, we are able to provide each child with a customized approach designed to meet their specific needs. Our orthopaedic experts are able to address

Research and Medical Education Shriners Hospitals for Children places a large emphasis on research in orthopaedics. In addition to searching for an understanding of the workings of the bones, muscles and joints themselves, researchers are looking for answers and solutions in the basics of genetics, cell structures and growth and development patterns. Some specific research projects underway in orthopaedics include developing medications to treat hypophosphatasia (a severe form of rickets) and determining the compliance rates for bracing in clubfoot. Shriners Hospitals for Children is also proud of its role in medical education. By maintaining relationships with more than 60 medical teaching facilities, Shriners Hospitals for Children fosters an academic environment committed to providing highquality education for its medical staff and expert care to all patients. ar-I Court is proud to announce we have eight new members (See photo on opposite page.) Welcome, ladies! Sar-I Court hosted the Annual Sunshine Unit Meet at the Embassy Suites in Tampa this past November and our Pirates in Paradise had a wonderful time sharing all their treasures and fun. November was also our Grand Visitation and a special luncheon was held for our Grand High Priestess, Lady Jan Hiebert at Pier 22 in Bradenton. We participated in the Sun Fiesta Parade in Venice on October 19 and the Venice Holiday Parade on November 30 (See photo on opposite page.) We continued to stay busy by holding another fundraiser at Publix on November 30 and December 1. This fundraiser was to raise money for the

Grand High Priestess’ Special Project, which is MultiChannel Analyzer for use in diagnosing the rarest metabolic bone diseases for our Shriners Hospitals for Children. We are also excited to learn that the Ladies Oriental Shrine will be instituting a new Court in Savannah, Georgia this February. It is hard to believe we will be starting a new year. In 2014, the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America will be celebrating their 100th anniversary. Anyone who is interested in joining the Ladies Oriental Shrine can contact me at (941) 518-3615. ear Ladies of the Household, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all; may you enjoy all the blessings of the season. Remembering the children in Shriners Hospitals for Children, we will be collecting monitory donations for Shrine Children at this month’s Stated Session on December 10. Please be as generous as your means will permit. Instead of collecting toys, clothes and books this month, we will donate cash or checks payable to Nyla Temple 152 to be forwarded to Daughters of the Nile Foundation. This way it can be distributed to the various Shrine hospitals and

will not require gift-wrapping, shipping or postage. A gift-wrapped box will be placed on the altar and we will sing while Princess Musician plays for us. There may be a surprise in store so please come and enjoy our time together. Supreme Queen Margaret Ann Risk will make her official visit January 16, 2014. Since this will be the Thursday following our regular Stated Session on January 14, we will vote to combine Stated/Session/ Ceremonial/ Supreme Queen’s Visit, if the members choose to do so. Have a safe and joyous Holiday Season.

e have now finished our first month since we came out of darkness and into the bright lights of winter. Fortunately, without the snow, but then that is one of the reasons most of us are here in Florida. I hope that by now most of our club members and their ladies are back with us. However there are still a few of our Hi-Twelvians and their ladies that are still up north in the United States or in Canada. We want all to know we miss them and look forward to seeing them soon. Several of our Hi-12 Brothers have had some hard times this past summer and we need to include all our members and their ladies in our prayers. The State Association fundraising “Enchantment of the Seas” Cruise to the Bahamas was held in November and I am sure a great time was had for all that were able to attend. December 2, will be our 51st Annual Florida State Masonic High Twelve Association convention. As in the last couple of years, it will be a one-day convention and will be at the Spartan Manor again in New Port Richey. I hope that a good attendance will be forthcoming from not only our club but also from the

whole state. Some will be going up the day before to enjoy a cookout at the hotel where we will be staying. Remember we are looking for new Hi-Twelvians to be so come on out and visit us at Duff’s Original Buffet to check us out and see if this is a club you would like to be part of. We think if you try us, you will want to be part of us. Duff’s is located at 6010 14th Street West (southwest corner of 60th Street & 14th Street) in Bradenton (14th Street is also Route 41). We meet most every Monday, November through April (we will not meet December 2 due to the state convention). Come between 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.; do not pay when you come in. We have our own private room and you pay there. Come, meet new friends, reminisce with old friends, enjoy the fellowship and some great food. Sometimes we have entertainment. Remember your ladies are always welcome. If you have questions please contact our club President Bob Davis, Gene Black or me. Just think next month it will be 2014; so enjoy the holidays and parties this month.

roverbs 2:1-2,5 “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your hats to understanding, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” One of the basic teachings of Freemasonry is respect for others. Masonry teaches that we should hold to our own religious beliefs and to the religion of our forefathers, but at the same time respect the religious beliefs of our fellowmen. This season of year, perhaps more than any other emphasizes this with both Christmas and Hanukkah. Both holidays are celebrated with the lighting of lights and both occur about the same time of year and, in reality, the events they commemorate happened about 160 years apart. Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration of the rededication of the altar in the Temple at Jerusalem by the Maccabees after its desecration by the Syrians in 162 BCE. The altar fire was relit and so were the sacred candles.

Christmas is symbolic of human sympathy and kindness to all men through the gift of a baby for us all. It symbolizes the teachings of tolerance, love, forgiveness and unselfishness. If we look at these two very special feasts along with our Masonic teachings we realize that God is universal to all mankind, regardless of his religious affiliation and gives mankind unity in his soul, holiness in his thoughts and actions, comfort in his troubles, aid during times of distress, and hope and courage throughout his life. These are the special gifts that come to us this holiday season, are emphasized throughout all our Scottish Right Degrees, and provide the foundation for us to build the Temple to the living God in our hearts. On behalf of all the members and officers of Tampa Scottish Rite we wish you all a very happy and joyous holiday season. Remember the Scottish Rite meeting on Monday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served beginning at 5:45 p.m. at a suggested donation of $9.

New Patient Referral Process Approved at Imperial Session Great news! It is now easier than ever to refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenŽ! At the 138th Annual Session in July 2012, the attending delegates approved amendments to the Colorado Bylaws 509.2 and 509.3 which simplified the way for patients to access Shriners Hospitals. Patients/families no longer need to fill out a two-page application form that must be processed before being considered for treatment. While this is a big change for our system and YOU, we want to assure you that our Shriners are more important than ever in finding children that need our help; as well as informing the public about the noble mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children. We need your participation now, more than ever, to reach more patients. This new process makes it easier for our patients and will still allow for engagement with the nobility. Travel and transportation support should not change. Contact your Shrine temple or hospital if you have questions. This new intake process continues to support your valuable referrals, without the added step of completing a patient application. Instead, simply provide patients/ families with the Shriners Hospitals for Children patient referral card, which may be obtained from your hospital or Shrine temple. In addition, a new Patient Referral Form will be forthcoming in the near future. However, the referral card is preferred, with the patient/family calling the hospital’s referral intake line directly. Why? This is the quickest and most convenient way for a patient to get the care they need. When did this start? In October 2012, Shriners Hospitals simplified the process

for our new patients; allowing immediate scheduling for an appointment if their clinical needs meet the hospital’s scope of service. To avoid any confusion to our patients or the community, temple staff are asked to no longer use the application form and remove any reference to a patient application process in temple materials or website. Thank you for your continued hard work in helping the children. Please contact your local Shriners Hospitals facility if you have any questions.

He grew up in Huntington, New York and graduated from Harborfields High in Greenlawn, New York in 1992. He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and San Diego State University, studying computer science. He married his wife Sarah in 2005. They have a four-year old son, Jonathan. The family moved to Florida in October 2012 so they could be closer to the rest of their family. Ed’s stepfather was a Mason; as were several of his friends. He always wanted to become one, so he joined Venice Lodge

No. 301 in July of 2013, where he hopes to grow as a man and to meet upstanding men in his community. Previously, Ed was general manager at one of San Diego’s largest clubs for over twelve years. Recently he has been a bartender at Sharky’s in Venice and spends his free time doing anything that involves his family. He is an accomplished disc jockey and martial artist. If you would like to communicate with Ed, his email is <eshauan@gmail.com>. He has also set up a Facebook page for the restaurant, search for “Sarasota Sahib Shrine Bar”. Brother Will Rogers by T. L. Thompson, PM, Iredell Lodge No.405. AF&AM

I

can’t remember when I first became acquainted with Will Rogers. Why would a boy, such as I, growing up in rural Central Texas become amazed by the life of a man who had died twenty-seven years before I was born? Maybe it was because he and I had a bond. A bond, which at that time, didn’t yet exist. First some ground work must be done! William Penn Adair Rogers was born the youngest of eight children to parents of mixed Cherokee Indian heritage on his father’s ranch near Verdigris River on November 4, 1879 in what was then Indian Territory. His father, Clement Vann Rogers, was a prominent cattleman and a leader in the Cherokee Nation. Mary America Schrimsher Rogers, his mother, was a vivacious lady, known as the best hostess in the Nations. Will once wrote of his mother: “Mama’s name was Mary; and if your Mother was an oldfashioned woman and named Mary, you don’t need to say much for her, everybody knows already.” It seems that young Will was a rollicky lad and mastered the talent of using a lariat rope at an early age. Though this skill would at first get the boy into trouble both at home and school, it would

later prove to be his ticket to fame. He attended the local Indian schools and, though a bright boy, studying didn’t prove to be his strong point. “Three years in McGuffey’s Fourth Reader, and I knew more about it than McGuffey did,” he would later say. He was much more interested in horse races and roping than his books, a fact he would later truly regret. After the death of his beloved mother, when he was only ten years old, his academics continued to decline. His father, believing strongly in education, elected to send his only surviving son to Kemper Military School at Boonville, Missouri. Here this child of the plains rebelled against the strict regime of the institution and ran off to the ranch country of the Texas Panhandle. He located a job on a cattle ranch near the town of Higgins and would, in the years to come, remark that this was one of the happiest periods of his life. He described the Panhandle country as “the prettiest country I ever saw in my life, flat as a beauty contest winners stomach, and prairie lakes scattered all over it And mirages! You could see anything in the world—just ahead of you.” With several months behind him as a wandering cowboy, Will returned home. Upon receiving a slight scolding from his father, who had given up the idea of his son’s attaining a proper education, he was put in charge of the management of the elder Rogers’ Dog Iron Ranch. At the cost of sometimes abandoning his We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

ranching duties, Will entered all the local rodeos and became widely known for his steer roping ability in the Eastern Territory. Throughout his entire life, Will owned horses, good horses. “There’s something the matter with a man that doesn’t love a good horse,” he said. “You never saw a good horse grow where a good man didn’t grow.”

Tiring of the sedentary life of ranching, Will drifted to the pampas of South America and after getting a job on a ship loaded with horses and mules, the young adventurer sailed to South Africa. It was there that he met the famed “Texas Jack” . . .continued on page 39

Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449 if you can arrange a placement.

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of July 31, 2013, they have collected 91,170 lbs., for a total of $47,059.12 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/ unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call: Laura Burgess (941) 758-9196 or Marylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 or Chickie Johnson (941) 966-2678 or Connie Lawson (941) 758-8274 or June Hutcheson (941) 723-1994

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party! We can’t grow, if they don’t know!
