John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 10 Saturday 30 May

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Tuggeranong (1) v Queanbeyan (2) @ Campese Oval First Grade: 3:10pm, Reserve Grade: 1:10pm, Colts: 11:45am Previous Result: Queanbeyan 25 defeated Tuggeranong 21 – Round 5, 2015 What a blockbuster we have on offer this weekend with the top of the table clash between this year’s two heavyweights. This is the second time these two have met this year, with Queanbeyan being victorious by 4 points in round 5. This Saturday the Queanbeyan Whites will be celebrating Old Boys and this match will surely not disappoint. Queanbeyan for the first time this yes welcome Les Makin back into their side after an extended time on the side line due to injury sustain while playing with the Brumbies. Les’ inclusion will add to an already impressive forward pack. Unfortunately there have been a number of changes make to this forward pack with form players Dan Penca and OJ Noa not named. Despite that, The Whites will be confident in there packs ability as well as the slick back line they have named this weekend. Queanbeyan attack has been impressive have secure 4 try bonus points in 5 games this years which includes last weekend dominant win over Gungahlin. Tuggeranong sit one point clear of Queanbeyan thanks to an extra bonus point which may prove crucial at the end of the season. Vikings shot out to a 21-0 lead against an improved Owls outfit by half time, before the owls struck back to make it 28-12 before a final try put the result beyond doubt. Jake Knight starred for the Vikings scoring a double, while the inclusion of Rod Iona saw him rack up 15 points. Only one changes has been made to Tuggeranong with Sione Taulua returning to the run on side, with Scott Sio returning to the Brumbies.

Uni-Norths (5) v Gungahlin (6) @ ANU North Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts 12.15pm Previous Result: Gungahlin 6 drew with Uni-Norths 6 – Round 5, 2015 When these two met back in round 5, nothing could separate these two teams with both taking 2 competitions points. With the competition past the halfway point, and the battle for top 4 getting intense, expect a definite outcome this weekend. The Owls showed a much improved effort against Tuggeranong last weekend, with only the down side was letting Vikings jump out to a 21-0 point lead. The second half saw Uni-Norths hit back, with both teams scoring 2 tries, but the damage had already been done. Siting just outside the top 4 the Owls see this is a must win game if they are to be finals contenders. The Eagles continue to improve each match as they tested Queanbeyan in last weekend’s 31-14 loss. Penalties to Luke Duffey kept Gungahlin in the game, but unfortunately The Whites, showed there class as to why they are in the top 2. Gungahlin have made a number of changes this weekend with Jamie Kopts slotting into fullback, with regular fullback James Lovell playing fly half for the first time this year. He will link up with Mitch ward who has been recalled to the starting side. With competition points a must for both clubs, expect the ball to be thrown around quite a lot compared to their previous encounter.

Easts (7) v Wests (3) @ Griffith Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Third Grade: 12.15pm Previous Result: Easts 28 defeated Wests 26 – Round 10, 2014 Easts had their second bye of the year and now embark on a 4 game stretch before there next bye. Easts, while they still only have the one win, each weekend they continue to test teams and it would not be a surprise if they upset Wests at home. Easts have done this before, edging out the Lions this time last year in memorable fashion. Depending on Friday night’s game between the Brumbies and the Blues, Easts may also see some of their Brumbies turn out for them, which will add some much need fire power in the forward pack. Wests last weekend played in a special ‘Iron Man’ jersey, which could have been the difference in their 7 point victory over Royals. A Rob Buaserua double also assisted Wests in getting the important victory which now has them 6 point clear of Royals who have the bye this weekend. A win to Wests this weekend will see them make some ground on Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan who play each other this weekend, however a loss, with dampen their chance of getting into the much important top 2 spot.

MATCH PREVIEW The Owls will be disappointed in their performance against Vikings, going down 77-18. In what started out as a tight encounter with both clusb trading point, Tuggeranong showed their class running away with the game. Gungahlin also were unable to secure a victory, going down comfortably to the undefeated Queanbeyan Whites. Seven points separate Gungahlin and the Owls on the ladders and points are for the vital 3rd and 4th spot with Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan 8 or more points clear. These two played out a draw back in round 5.

The Owls colts’ team are starting to hit their straps securing their fourth consecutive victory last weekend, coming from behind to defeat Vikings. Down 16-10 Uni rallied to hand Tuggeranong their second loss and now sit second on the table. Bryce Lee starred for the Owls with a personal haul of 22 points out of 37. Gungahlin like the Owls are finding their feet defeating Queanbeyan 16-5 to be sitting 4th on the table thanks to back to back victories. The last time these two played Uni edged out the Eagles 2621.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths let a lead slip in their clash against Tuggeranong, which cost them the match, going down 29-24. The Owls have now fallen to 4th on the ladder and now currently sit 2 points behind their opponent Gungahlin held on against Queanbeyan 33-26 giving the Whites there second loss. This game will be a cracker, and will go down to the wire. This is the first time these two have met, so both are unknown to each other.

Both The Owls and Gungahlin are searching for their first win on the year and this Saturday should see one club achieve that. Both are coming off heavy losses and it’s guaranteed they are working hard a training this week. Like 3rd Grade, this game could be a very close battle, but both clubs will have ensure there defense is water tight after they concede 60 points each last round.

MATCH PREVIEW Coming of the bye, Easts will be out to upset Wests and put a halt in their push up the ladder after the Lions 1 point victory over Royals. Wests win now has them in 5th spot, with 1 points separating them and Royals in 4th and also 1 point between 5th & 6th.

Easts 3rds will have a great opportunity to get there first win of the season taking on Wests. However, there work will be cut out for them, as the Lions will be coming over a bonus point victory against Royals. A win by the Lions will keep them in touch with the top 4.

MATCH PREVIEW Both teams are coming of the back of impressive win in this weekend 2nd grade match of the round. Queanbeyan remain undefeated and are currently 6 points clear of Tuggeranong in what will be a very entertaining and quality game of footy. When these two met back in round 5, The Whites edged out Vikings by 4 points. Expect this game to be another close encounter.

Queanbeyan colts suffered a disappointing loss to Gungahlin in round 9 which has seen them drop outside the top 4 as a result of number of wins. Like Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong will be disappointing they let a lead slip and finished the last 15 minutes with 14 players on the field. With position on the ladder so close at present, both teams will be up for this match and it will be a lot closer than their 30-10 game which Tuggeranong won.

MATCH PREVIEW Only 3 points separate the top 4 teams and this weekend we have a cracker of game between Tuggeranong who are in 1st and Queanbeyan who currently sit 3rd. Tuggeranong secured an important win against Uni-Norths, whereas Queanbeyan were unable to rein in Gungahlin losing 33-26. Previous games between these two clubs have been always quality rugby so expect nothing different.

Like 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade, this is another important clash between 1st and 2nd on the competition ladder. Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan both had massive wins on the weekend which now has taken there for/against to +155 & +167 respectively. We know both teams can score points, so expect not only a battle up front, but also some great attacking rugby. This match will kick off a wonderful day planned at Queanbeyan who are celebrating old boy’s day.

Queanbeyan Celebrate Clubs 60th Anniversary The Queanbeyan Whites will be celebrating their clubs 60th Anniversary this weekend before they take on the Tuggeranong Vikings in the round 10 John I Dent Cup Match of the Round. Queanbeyan were formed in 1954 and entered the ACT Rugby Union Competition in 1955. Since their inclusion in 1955, The Whites have won the John I Dent Cup 1st Grade Premiership seven times (1959, 81, 82, 83, 07, 08 & 10) whilst being runners up also seven times. Of these 14 times the club has contested for the John I Dent Cup, Queanbeyan have had some memorable matches including the games in 2009 and 2010 against Tuggeranong, where the exact same 30-28 score was replicated for both years. Not only that but the clubs first Grand Final win against Royals 21-14 or the 1 point lost to Royals 13-12 in 1979. In light of their celebrations, the clubs will be holding an ‘Old Boys’ dinner on Friday 29th May in which they will name the team of the decade for 2005-2014. Following that, the club will play a Veterans game before the first grade game, with the Queanbeyan team known as the ‘’Off Whites”. Congratulations to the Queanbeyan Whites.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION – ROUND 4 The Tuggeranong Viqueens have emerged as a serious contender after handing Uni-norths their second successive defeat 21-17. Tuggeranong skipped out to an early lead but Uni-Norths were not going to give in that easy. Some desperate defensive efforts from both teams keep the crowd on the edge of their seats. The Owls scored very late in the piece to make in 3 tries all, but sadly goal kicking proved to be the difference, with the Owls only converting one try, while Tuggeranong kicked 3 from 3.

This weekend, Uni-Norths will host Gungahlin which will also be the clubs ladies day. There will be plenty on offer at ANU North Oval and will be a great day for the club. This match is important for Uni & Gungahlin with Royals having the bye giving them 4 competition and Tuggeranong having a ‘friendly’ against ADFA/RMC. If the Owls win, they could secure 2nd place, where as if the Eagles win, they will have tasted success for the first time this year and will jump to 3rd. The Viqueens will travel to ADFA/RCM to continue the 4 week block in which all the clubs will play against ADFA/RMC. This match is to kick off at 1.35pm

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

1st Division 1st Grade games in round 6 saw plenty of tries with the two games played a total of 25 tries were scored. In the Yass v ADFA game, The Rams finally secured their first win of the season outscoring ADFA 61-14. It was raining doubles at Victoria Park with G Stevenson, Z Senior, K Kepaoa, C Lyneham & T Phelps all getting across the stripe for their respective clubs. The win for the Ram has them sitting one point outside the top four. In 2nd Grade, Yass completed the double, winning with a bonus point 29-5.

After the first of the five round where the two zone compete against each other, we will now start to see some separation on the table.

The Bushrangers have leap to the top of the table with an impressive away win against Cooma 50-12. Hall were far too good, running in 8 tries to 2, which included doubles to J Munro & A McCook. Despite the loss, Cooma are still 9 points clear in 3rd of ADFA. Like Yass, Hall completed the double, thrashing the Red Devils 59-5. This weekend Goulburn will take on Hall at home in the match of the round. Goulburn have a game in hand but a win will see them either one or two points behind. These two clubs played back in round 2 and only 3 points separated the clubs. Yass will travel to Cooma with confidence after getting the monkey of their back. Cooma though will be disappointed in their efforts last weekend and will be out to make amends and end their two game losing streak.

The Monaro clubs showed their dominance over the South Coast clubs, with all Monaro clubs winning. Jindabyne and Bungendore were big winners, scoring 60+ points in their respective matches against Braidwood and Batemans Bay. Milton suffered at 7 point loss to Taralga, while Boorowa finally got their season under way win an impressive 44-17 win over Broulee. This weekend’s match of the round will be Milton v Bungendore at Milton. Milton remain at the South Coast leader and will keen to make amends of their loss to Taralga, especially at home. The remaining matches in this round are all going to be tight and cracking affairs. Crookwell had the weekend off, and currently sit just outside the wild card place on the ladder. A win will see them leap frog their opponents Braidwood who are one point ahead of them. Broulee host Taralga who respectively sit 6th and 7th on the ladder with two points separating them, whereas Boorowa make the trip down the Bay, taking on Batemans Bay. TEAM Jindabyne* Milton*
