John I Dent Cup Preview: Preliminary Final Saturday 1st August

Queanbeyan (2) v Royals (4) – 3:25pm, Viking Park Previous Result: Royals 23 defeated Queanbeyan 22 – Rd 7 One team experienced the highs of winning, the other experienced the lows of a golden opportunity missed however this weekend both experiences can be forgotten as their 2015 season is on the line. It’s the preliminary final and now with everything to lose and with no second chances we will have a dog fight on our hands as both Queanbeyan and Royals look to stay alive in their quest to lift the John I Dent Cup for 2015. Both side have been in this position with the most recent match up being in 2013 where Royals were the higher placed team and ended The Whites campaign. With the roles reversed now, Queanbeyan now have a chance to avenge the loss and have back to back years in the John I Dent Cup Grand Final. Queanbeyan in the Major Semi failed to exploit a 14 man Tuggeranong side, who on the stroke of half time were dealt a massive blow with front rower Sione Talua shown his marching orders. The Whites were behind on the score board early 12-3, but clawed their way back to level, however Vikings lead 22-12 before a Queanbeyan converted try set up a thrilling finish. Unfortunately that is where the game ended, with Queanbeyan falling just short 22-19. Queanbeyan would have loved the weekend off with injuries to Billy Chalker and Zac Tarrant which forced them from the field, however both have been named to play this weekend. Queanbeyan will want to have all their players fully fit this weekend if they are to contain a confident Royals outfit who displayed probably their best performance of the year in the Minor Semi Final. If there was doubt over the Royals having a number of players returning and having not played together it was quickly squashed as Royals shot out to a 19-0 lead against Wests, a team they hadn’t beat all year. Brent Hamlin was a constant threat in the first half, exploiting weakness close to the ruck which result in a try to himself and setting up one. However after half time for a short period of time, Royals took their foot off the throttle and in the blink of an eye, in true Wests style they hit back to take the lead 24-19. But that was short lived with Royals then lifting another gear on the back of a try to Harry Burey to run out 41-24 victors. The key matchups this weekend will be the battle of the sevens, with Dan Penca known to lead from the front either in carries or defense, while Brendan Woodward had a blinder on the weekend and was ever present in defense, at the break down or in looking to carry the ball. Another great battle will be OJ Noa and Steve Sione, both are big number 8’s that cause damage with ball in hand. There go forwards will be vital for clubs to build pressure in attack. Finally at the back, Jamie Marmont and Ben Johnson will be pivotal for their teams as both player is very experience and have been there before on the big stage. If both teams are on point this weekend, it will be a very exciting match filled with some attacking rugby and brutal defense.

MATCH PREVIEW Vikings went through the regular season undefeated but in the Major Semi they were ambushed by a determined Wests side losing 45-12. Tuggeranong will be out to bounce back this weekend against Queanbeyan, who defeated them in last year’s Grand Final. Queanbeyan held on against Royals in a tough Minor Semi Final winning 20-15. These two haven’t met this year, so this match could go either way but typical Vikings v Queanbeyan encounters are very hard fought and exciting match ups.

MATCH PREVIEW Minor Premiers Tuggeranong were below par in last weekend’s Major Semi Final, as they were out classed and out enthused by Queanbeyan. The score line reads 33-22, however would have be a lot worse had Vikings not finished strongly and score two tries in the final 5 minutes of the game. Wests put on defensive master class, holding the Owls scoreless in their 22-0 win in windy conditions. These two clubs shared the competition points this season with massive wins to both side.

MATCH PREVIEW These two clubs met last year in the Minor Semi Final in which the Owls won. This year it is one a piece and the winner of this match will have bragging rights going into 2016. Royals were unable contain Tuggeranong at scrum time and were out enthused in the Major, going down 32-17. Whereas the Owls held Queanbeyan scoreless in the second half to win 20-3. This match will come down to the wire as both look to feature in the Grand Final for the first time in a number of years.

MATCH PREVIEW These two clubs have only met on two occasion in 2015, with Tuggeranong winning both matches, the first 10-7 and the second 500. In the Major Semi Final Tuggeranong came up short against Queanbeyan going down 20-15. If Vikings had of converted there three tries, the score would reflect a different result. Wests on the other hand battled out a thrilling 10 all draw with Uni-Norths and progressed through as they were the highest place team on the ladder.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals are coming into the final series on the back of a near perfect regular season, winning seven of their eight games, losing only the one match. In this season, Royals amassed a huge for and against which saw them only leak on average 8 points per game. Gungahlin on the other hand, with have their work cut out for them if they are to cause the upset of the season. While the Eagles haven’t been successful in winning this year, they are unearthing some talented players which will certainly test Royals at staged this weekend.

Only two points separated these two on the competition ladder, and this match could go either way. The Owls were not at their best last weekend, beaten easily by Royals, however Uni-Norths have been in the finals before and as the defending premiers they will do anything to ensure they have the opportunity to go back to back. Tuggeranong were far too good for Gungahlin last weekend and will go into this match up with confidence. Tuggeranong have a good balance of players in their team which Uni will need to contain if they are to win.

The Gungahlin Eagles would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support in 2015

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: It is the final round for 1st division and the finals spots are cemented in 2nd grade, but in 1st grade the 4th and final spot it still up for grabs. This weekend’s match of the round will be the clash between Yass and ADFA at ADFA. Yass need to win if they want to jump from 5th to 4th and hope RMC don’t secure any competition points against Goulburn in the double point match. ADFA will also be celebrating their back to ADFA day in which past players from the club will be on site to watch the club. RMC task of securing competition points against Goulburn will be a very tall order with the dirty reds being undefeated. But for RMC, this will be a great opportunity as the clubs will then have both teams featuring in the final series for the first time in a number of years. Hall this weekend host Cooma and both clubs will be out to fine tune combinations and plans of attack for the final series. Cooma are coming along just nicely now having won 4 of their last 5, while Hall have had a mixed last 5 games.

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION Like 1st Division, this is the final round and with the top eight decided, positioning are all that matter. Milton are the South Coast Minor Premiers, but are yet to know who they will player, with the match between Jindabyne and Bungendore to decide the Monaro Minor Premiership. Whoever doesn’t win this match will then play Crookwell to round out the Cup finals. From there Boorowa, Taralga, Batemans Bay and Braidwood are all fighting it out, with the battle for the all-important 5th spot up for grabs. The 5th place getting will not only host the plate major semi-final, but also potentially could host the plate grand final. Taralga and Boorowa play with the winner more than likely secure 5th spot. Boorowa will be at home, so it will be no easy task for Taralga. Batemans Bay travel to Broulee which will be an exciting clash, with both clubs always looking to get one up on the opposition. Broulee won the first encounter, but Batemans Bay would love nothing better to finish the regular season with a win. Both Milton and Braidwood have the bye this weekend as does Crookwell.
