John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 15 Saturday 4th July

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Tuggeranong (1) v Queanbeyan (2) @ Viking Park First Grade: 3:25pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 29 defeated Queanbeyan 24 – Rd 10, 2015

What a match we have on offer at the back end of the season with Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan eyeing for the Minor Premiership with two rounds to go after this weekend. Only one competition points separates these two, so there is a lot at stake with the outcome of this match. Currently it is one a piece this year between these two clubs, and both would like to get one up on their opponent before the final series. Tuggeranong suffered a shock defeat to Uni-Norths at ANU North Oval which has seen Queanbeyan take full advantage of and close the gap on them. Vikings were behind on the score board for pretty much the whole match before take in the lead with 7 minutes left. Unfortunately the Owls were not done and were able to steal the game from Vikings. Despite the loss, Tuggeranong secure two vital competition points. This weekend we can expect a very fired up Vikings team to run out and send a message they are still on track to take out a fifth consecutive John I Dent Cup. Queanbeyan on the other hand, made light work of Gungahlin, cruising to a 31-0 win, which included a double from Doug Lancaster on the wing. The Whites defeated Vikings last time they played at Viking Park in round 5, and will take confidence from that. A couple of changes have been made with Neori Nadruku returning to the starting side, while Hamish Ahern gets named at Fullback for the first time.

Gungahlin (6) v Uni-Norths (5) @ Nicholls Enclosed Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts 12.15pm Previous Result: Gungahlin 31 defeated Uni-Norths 3 – Rd 10, 2015

Gungahlin missed their most influential player Rocky Ilolahia on the weekend against Queanbeyan going down 31-0 to a quality Whites side at Campese. However with Rocky’s late exclusion from the side, it meant that Chris Coyle was able to make his first grade run on debut for the club after come over midway through the season. This weekend, the Eagles are back at Nicholls for the first time this year and will look to come away with a win, and close the gap on Uni-Norths and try and secure 5th spot on the ladder. Vatiliai Tuidraki will make his 1st grade debut this weekend at inside centre. Uni-Norths secured one of the clubs most memorable wins on the weekend, upsetting ladder leaders Tuggeranong Vikings with a 21-20 victory. Vikings outscored Uni 4 tries to 2, but it was goal kicking that was the difference with the Owls kicking a penalty goal to regain the lead after leading for the majority of the match with 1 minute remaining. This weekend Uni will be boosted by Allan Alaalatoa and Michael Dowsett, while Stee Tiki will make his 1st grade run on debut as the Owls search for back to back victories for the first time this year. Wests (3) v Easts (7) @ Jamison Oval First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts 12.25pm Previous Result: Wests 72 defeated Easts 7 – Rd 12, 2015

Wests held off a fast finishing Royals outfit to secure an important bonus point victory which essentially now has the Lions out of reach in 3rd place. However Wests are only 5 points behind Queanbeyan and if result go their way, Wests could potentially sneak into the top two. Joe Smellie and Rob Buaserua were stand outs for Wests in their win, with Joe scoring a personal haul of 20 points, while Rob was named Skins player of the match after scoring a hattrick. A number of changes have been made this week especially in the backs, while the forwards only one change has be made. Easts had their third and final bye last weekend after going down to Queanbeyan in round 13 53-5. George Cross was the clubs lone try scorer, while Darcy Eason was a standout, constantly trying to put his team on the front foot as well as Tom Pilkington and Liam Doherty on the wing.

MATCH PREVIEW The Eagles fell agonisingly short in there round 14 clash against top of the table Queanbeyan. Gungahlin went down 18-17 with both teams scoring three tries. Uni-Norths on the other hand were no match for Tuggeranong beaten comfortably 57-5. Uni-Norths still sit 4th on the ladder, but with Royals having the bye this weekend, the Owls need to win if they are to hold on to that last finals position. The last time these two played Uni won 23-19 and going off last week’s form, this could be another close fixture.

Gungahlin colts currently sit one point outside the top in the battle with Queanbeyan for the remaining top 4 spot. The Eagles were able to secure a 4 point victory last weekend against the Whites and will take confidence going into a must win for them this weekend. Uni-Norths suffered their third loss of the season, going down to Vikings 38-12. The Owls allowed Tuggeranong to get off to a great start and in the end proved too much to run down despite sparking a second half comeback.

MATCH PREVIEW After last weekend results, Gungahlin now sit in 4th spot on the ladder in the hotly contested battle for finals position. The Eagles went down to Queanbeyan 27-14 and now sit on 2 points ahead of Uni-Norths. The Owls on the other hand, in a similar scoreline against Tuggeranong were unable to secure an important bonus point and now sit 5th on the ladder. This weekend’s clash will have a direct impact on the final placing and is a must win for both clubs.

Uni-Norths sole win this season has come against Gungahlin, while the Eagles remain winless. With both teams out of finals contention, this match a lot of significance for them in regards to win loss column. Both the Eagles and Owls were beating comfortably by their opponents last weekend, and will be looking to bounce back accordingly. The last time these two played, only two points separated them, so expect another tight affair.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests 2nds are hitting their straps at the right time of the competition, now having won their last 5 matches and sit 10 points behind 2nd place Tuggeranong. Last weekend they defeated Royals comfortably which put a dent in Royals 2nd grade finals chances. This weekend taking on Easts, a bonus point win will almost secure Wests a spot in the final depending on result from other games.

For Wests, with Queanbeyan’s result against Easts not confirmed, Wests will need to end their season on a high with as many competition points as possible if they are finish in the important 2nd spot. With two games remaining, bonus point’s wins are a must as Wests have the bye in the final round. Last time these two clubs met, Wests won 43-5.

MATCH PREVIEW With Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan pretty much having wrapped up a top two finish, the all-important minor premiership is on the line now. Vikings currently trail the Whites by 3 points and both have 2 more games after this, so a victory this weekend is crucial for both teams. Tuggeranong are coming off a massive win again Uni, while Queanbeyan were able to hold off Gungahlin in a hard fought encounter. Last time these two met, only two points separated them.

Vikings came out of the blocks on fire last weekend, blitzing Uni-Norths. The result has Tuggeranong only 4 points being Royals and 2 point ahead of Uni-Norths. With Royals having the bye, Tuggeranong must win this weekend to stay in touch. Queanbeyan though are coming 4th by one point and will need to produce an upset if they are to create a bit of leeway between them and the Eagles. With 2 rounds remain, position are still up for grab, creating an exciting finish to the colts season.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong like 4th grade, are in a strong position to secure the minor premiership and a win again Queanbeyan, will make it very difficult for other clubs to catch them. The result for Queanbeyan round 13 match are still not confirmed yet, but despite that, the Whites were able to secure an important bonus point win over Gungahlin to lift them to 37 points and sitting 3rd on the ladder. Tuggeranong won by 22 points in their last encounter at Queanbeyan.

Vikings have pretty much sown up the 4th grade minor premiership after their bonus point victory over the Owls. With their near rivals Wests having the bye, a win this weekend will see them take home the silverware. Queanbeyan though have now won two game in row and a win this weekend will see them leap frog Wests for that all import major semi final spot for the time being. Vikings were far too good in their last encounter, but with the Whites hitting their straps, this could be another tight encounter.

ACT WOMEN’S FINISH RUNNERS UP AT NATIONALS Congratulations to the 2015 ACT Women’s 15’s representative side who have finished runners up at the Women’s National Championships in Sydney last weekend. The side were in training before National’s for a month, playing trial matches against NSW Country and Sydney who they would again play against at the championships. For the girls to get to the finals, they would have to finish the pool stages undefeated, playing up against NSW Country and ASRU in day and the highly fancied Queensland side on day 2. In the first game the girls outscored NSW Country 15-0 thanks to a double to Michelle Perry and Tayla Standford crossing the white stripe. The standout for the ACT team in game one were Michelle Perry, Tayla Stanford, Remi Wilton, Kate Brown & Louise Burrows. Within a couple of hours the girls were back on the field taking on ASRU. It was here Michelle Perry, Sammy Maxwell, Kate Brown and Lani Yabaki all ran in tries, while Tayla Stanford kicked three conversion to secure a 26-0 bonus victory. Best on ground for this game were Fiona Knight, Sarah Carter, Larni Yabaki, Emily Sogal, Michelle Milward & Kate Brown. After a promising start, the girls would now verse Queensland which would determine who would go through to the final. The ACT side again showed there superior defensive skills, holding Queensland scoreless in a match they had to grind out to win. In the end a try to Anthea Clarke in the first half, which was backed up by a try to Tayla Stanford in the second have proved to be the difference as ACT went on to win 10-0. The result meant they would now play Sydney in the final. Tayla Stanford, Fiona Knight, Anthea Clarke, Rhiannon Ford, Georgia O’Neill, Michelle Milward all lead from the front and were pivotal in this fixture. In the first half of the final, Sydney jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after kicking a penalty and scoring a try. ACT hit back with a penalty of their own thanks to Sarah Carter to narrow the gap at half time. Unfortunately that was as close as it got for the ACT side, with Sydney starving the girls of field position and possession. The final score ending up being 23-3. Despite the result, Sarah Hogan, Stephanie Coro, Louise McCabe, Anja Halstead & Kate Brown were ACT best players in the final. Head Coach Russell Ingram was extremely proud of the girl’s effort over the duration of the program and championships and thanked all involved especially the players and management staff, Tom Beinke, Erin Da Deppo & Kristian Waller.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION ROUND 7 The Women’s competition is back in the swing of things this weekend after the competition bye on the 27th June. After the ACT’s success at Nationals, expect this competition to continue to go from strength to strength with a large number of players being exposed to representative rugby and some young talented players coming through the ranks.

This weekend Gungahlin are at home, playing against Royals. These two clubs met last round before the break with Royals winning comprehensively. This time though, Gungahlin will be playing with the whole club at Nicholls which will be a great day for the club. In the match of the round Uni-Norths will be hosting Tuggeranong at ANU North Oval. These two clubs have already met two times this year and have the shared the spoils. With the competition so competition so tight at the top, that first place will be vital with the new revamped final series structure.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

Again for consecutive weekends there is only one fixture taking place and that is between Yass and Hall at Hall. The other fixtures have been reschedule for the coming weekend between ADFA v Goulburn & RMC v Cooma.

The combined part of the competition has now been completed and clubs will go back to playing against those in there zone. In round 10, Boorowa and Braidwood played out a very entertaining match, which came down to the wire. In the end, Boorowa were able to take the bonus point victory thanks to their goal kicker Brad Rose converting all four tries. For Braidwood, goal kicking cost them as they only converted three of their four tries.

In round 10 in the only match being played, Cooma re-joined the winners circle with an impressive victory of Hall in 1st Grade winning 27-14. Hall had previously only lost two matches before that weekend, whereas Cooma have now snapped a five game losing streak. The Red Devils outscore Hall four tries to two giving them an important bonus point. In 2nd grade Hall have increased the gap between them and 4th place with a 41-0 victory against Cooma. Hall will take on 2nd place Yass this weekend and the last time these two played was back in round 4, where Yass won 18-12. In 1st Grade Hall held on to win a tight won 39-33. With finals not too far away, ladder positioning is vital.

Milton at home also tested ladder leaders Jindabyne who have lost prominent fullback Matt Caldwell for a period of time due to injury. However, even with the amount of travel the Bushpigs endures, they came home with a bonus point victory and will now rest up as they have the bye. Crookwell made like work of Broulee, crossing the half century with 9 tries and 5 conversion in the 55-5 win. This weekend the Dogs will travel to Boorowa who they only just beat by 3 points back in round 1. Taralga had the weekend off and will host Bungendore who put on a show for their fans, winning against Batemans Bay 74-5. Down in the South Coast the only game this weekend is Milton v Broulee at Broulee. Milton won by 25 points last time and will be confident after their performance against Jindabyne.
