John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 9 Saturday, 23 May

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Wests (3) v Royals (4) @ Jamison Oval First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1:50pm, Colts: 12:25pm Previous Result: Wests 10 defeated Royals 0 – Rd1, 2015 Both clubs are coming off the back of wins and will be looking to continue this form. The last time the met it was a bash fest with the scores going in favour of Wests 10-0. From last weekend’s results both teams had a field day in attack and will carry confidence in their attack going into this match of the round. Wests recovered from a slow start to against the Eagles to run away with a 19 point victory, but the victory came at a cost with Drew Southwell injuring himself badly. We wish Drew all the best in his recovery. The Lions outscored Gungahlin 6 tries to 3 with a crucial bonus point that has them 2 point clear of Royals and 5 point from Uni-Norths. Seb Lorroway returns to the side as does Ratu Tagive in a reshuffled back line. Royals have strung together three wins in row to see them enter the top four for the first time. The Blue Baggers are gaining moment which was evident in their thrashing of the Owls 50-0. Like Wests, Royals lost Otto Wrakonoi to a bad injury which resulted in the game shifting fields. Despite the change in venue, Royals continued their scoring ways which included a double to skins man of the match Tom Staniforth. We also wish Otto all the best in his recovery.

Gungahlin (6) v Queanbeyan (2) @ Gungahlin Enclosed Oval First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts 12.25pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 26 defeated Gungahlin 8 – Rd 1, 2015 The Eagles were unable to capitalize a promising start that saw them shot out to a 10-0 thanks to an intercept try to Jamie Kotz who ran 90meter to score between the sticks. The Eagles who would have gained a lot of confidence after securing their first win were not capable to go back to back, but despite the results against Wests they know they can match it with the top 4 teams and will be no push overs. This weekend at home they will certainly test Queanbeyan especially with clubs stalwarts Ben McGee and Anthony Dawes returning the 1st grade side for the first time this year. Queanbeyan will be fresh from their bye and looking to bounce back after their one point loss to Royals. The Whites had a chance to win that game, scoring in the final play, however the conversion was unsuccessful. A Tuggeranong bonus point win on the weekend has seen Queanbeyan give up top spot by 1 point, however they currently 8 points clear on Wests in third. A win this weekend will keep some distance between 2nd and 3rd which come finals time is vital.

Tuggeranong (1) v Uni-Norths (5) @ Viking Park First Grade: 3.25pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Colts 12.15pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 39 defeated Uni-Norths 3 – rd 12 2014 Tuggeranong continued their winning ways running in 11 tries to 0 against Easts, as improved their for and against winning 69-0. Four players score doubles which included Jake Rakic who had a personal haul of 20 points. Vikings have now jumped 1 point clear of Queanbeyan on the table that to securing 1 more bonus point then the Whites after 6 games. This weekend Tuggeranong have only made one change and that is the inclusion of Rodney Iona, who has recently returned from a tour of South Africa with the Brumbies. Rodney has been a senior player at Tuggeranong for a number of years and he will slot straight into their side. In an important match for the Owls which could have seen them create some space between 4th and 5th, they were unable to contain a hot Royals outfit leaking a disappointing 50 points at home. Uni-Norths were unable to show the form that has seen them placed in the top 4 for the first 8 rounds and as a result a number of changes have been made. A reshuffled backline and injuries has seen Paul Katoa return to halfback from fullback with Sam Irwin moving to fullback which present an opportunity for Brothers Fabian and Leti Tago to play together in 1st Grade for the first time at the club in the centres. Despite the result against Royals, expect the Owls to bounce back and be out to test Vikings.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong put on an attacking clinic on the weekend, defeated Easts 68-0. Sam Giltrap ran in three tries while Joe Langtry scored a double in the 12 try romping. Uni-Norths played in a war of attrition except Royals were able to cross the white stripe one more time to secure a 10-5. These two teams are yet to have met in the season, but only three points separate these two on the table.

Vikings will be fresh from their bye after having last played in round 7 against Wests. Their task ahead will be against the in form Uni-Norths who have strung together three consecutive which included handing previously undefeated Royals their first loss 15-12. The Owls and Vikings have had some close encounter as of late and this will be know different. Both teams will have an attacking mind set from the kick off as well.

MATCH PREVIEW It’s the top of the table clash between these two clubs as only 1 competition point seperates them. UniNorths were able to secure a bonus point victory against Royals as did Vikings against Easts. It will be a very intense battle in the forwards which will definitely shape the outcome of the match.

Tuggeranong had the weekend off in round 8 but will be ready to take on a winless uni-norths team. The Owls came close against Royals going down by 7 points, while Tuggeranong were able to secure a bonus point win against Wests in round 7. The Owls need to win to keep in touch with the top 4 while Vikings will be out to securing top spot.

MATCH PREVIEW The Eagle have shown some great form, defeating Wests with a bonus point victory. The win has Gungahlin just sitting outside the 4 by 1 points. Queanbeyan’s last game was against Royals in which they won 21-7. That win has put them 6 point clear on top of the ladder. Last time these two met, Queanbeyan got the win 22-10.

Gungahlin’s colts were able to hold off a desperate Wests outfit to win 17-7. That is the Eagles 2nd win of the year and are only a win behind Queanbeyan who sit in 4th spot on the ladder. The Whites went down comfortably in their last game to Royals, but need to win to create more of a gap between the top four and the bottom two. Queanbeyan beat the Eagles by 35 in round 1, but this time around, the result will be a lot closer.

MATCH PREVIEW Only 1 point seperates these two on the table and if there wasn’t a top of the table clash this weekend, this game would be match of the round. Both teams are coming off the back of victories especially the Eagles who have won three on the trot. Whoever wins this game could go as high as 2nd on the ladder or drop to 4th.

Gungahlin are yet to secure their first win of the season going down by 17 points to Wests last weekend. Queanbeyan though sit two point below joint leaders Royals and Vikings and a win this weekend and results going their way could see them jump to 1st. The Whites are coming off the bye and a win will put them in a favourable position nearing the halfway point of the season.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals held on to a dramatic 10-5 win over the Owls at North Oval. This was the final time these two team will play in the regular season, with both games going to Royal by 1 try. Wests who started so well this season suffered their fourth loss in a row at the hands of Gungahlin by 9 points. These two met back in rd 1 and Wests came away with 31-10 victory. This game will be a lot tighter as both aim to secure top 4 spots.

Wests colts were unable to claw their way back against Gungahlin, going down 17-7. The Lions will take some confidence out of that game and will be looking to exploit Royals who suffered their first loss of year. Royals were unable to convert a penalty goal kick after the siren which would have seen them tie the game 15 all. The last time these two met, Royals were far better, holding Wests Scoreless.

MATCH PREVIEW Both Royals and Wests were unable to secure competition points, being beaten comprehensively by their opponents. This weekend provided a great opportunity for one of these sides to get their season back on track. Royals are yet to taste success while Wests are losing touch with the top 4 and a loss will hurt their chances of making finals.

Royals 4th grade were able to hold on and defeat UniNorths for the second time this year in a very close affair. This time Royals won 17-10 after coming from behind, Wests on the other hand secured a much need win against Gungahlin which keeps them still in the top 4.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION – ROUND 3 Royals have certainly sent a message to the competition that they are going to be one tough team to beat. In the Grand Final Replay from 2014 which was expected to be very close and come down to the wire, Royals thrashed the Owls 71-5. Uni-Norths scored first and that was as good as it got for the defending champs. Royals ran in 13 tries which was spread crossed 10 different players. Sarah Carter continue her impressive form kicking 6 goals and scoring a try.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

The Grand Final replay between Cooma and Goulburn was almost an exact replica with the Dirty Reds running in 8 tries to 2 to win 56-17. Inside centre Dom Falk scored a personal haul of 21 points including 8/8 with the boot and crossing the line himself. Dom’s centre partner Ben Todkill scored double as 7 of the 15 Goulburn player scored tries.

The combined part of the South Coast Monaro is finally here and the clubs are very excited to test themselves against new opponents. Currently Jindabyne and Milton are the form teams of their respective zones, but Braidwood and Bungendore aren’t far behind before 4 teams are all within 3 points of each other.

The loss was Cooma’s second for the year and now have relinquished their position on top of the ladder to Goulburn. It was a similar result in the 2nd Grade clash, 55-0, however this time Goulburn held Cooma scoreless as they continued their unbeaten start to the season. Round 6 will see Cooma host Hall with only 1 point separating them on the table in this weekend’s match of the round in 1st grade. These two haven’t played each other yet but going off form this will be close encounter in both grade. Yass had the bye last weekend and will take on ADFA at home as they view this match a great chance to get their first win of season in 1st grade. While in 2nd grade ADFA will be out to secure their first win of the season against a form Yass side.

In the South Coast challenge cup Broulee secured their second win of the year upsetting the Boars at Hanging Rock 20-13. Taralga have finally kick started their season off defeating Boorowa comfortably 4829. Both teams secured 4 try bonus points. Milton kept their place in the top 2, with Bay Red forfeiting due player unavailability giving Milton a bonus point win. Unfortunately Bay Red have forfeited this weekend against Crookwell. This weekend’s match of the round will be between Braidwood and Bungendore, as both are only seperated by 1 point on the ladder. The game will be at Braidwood. Jindabyne will travel to the Bay to take on the Boars, while South Coast heavy weights Milton travel to Taralga in what could be a hotly contested match. Boorowa will host a confident Broulee team at home. This will be a good opportunity for Boorowa to get open up their win account and stay in touch with the top 4. 0 0
