John I Dent Cup Preview: GRAND FINAL Saturday 9thAugust

Grand Final: Queanbeyan Whites (2) v Tuggeranong Vikings (1) Last met - Major Semi Final: Queanbeyan 33 defeated Tuggeranong 32 at Viking Park

After fourteen rounds and two weeks of intense finals football, two sides remain standing with the opportunity to become Champions for 2014. Minor Premiers Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan will square off for the right to hold aloft the John I Dent Cup late Saturday afternoon. There is a lot of hype surrounding Saturday’s match up with Tuggeranong looking to secure their fourth consecutive title, while Queanbeyan will be contesting their first 1st Grade Grand Final since 2010 in which The Whites went home with the John I Dent Cup. These two teams have met on three occasions already this year with Tuggeranong getting the better of Queanbeyan in two of these matches. Of the three encounters the biggest winning margin was 3 points in Round 3 when Vikings won 20 -17 and in round 11 (Vikings winning 12-9). Since 1938 when the John I Dent Cup was first competed for, Vikings and Queanbeyan have played each other for the cup on two occasions (2009 & 2010). These matches were heart stoppers, with both supporters on the edge of their seats as the both games came down to the wire. It was in 2009 when Tuggeranong pipped Queanbeyan at the post to win 30-28 ending The Whites 2 year reign as Champions. But Queanbeyan got there revenge by doing the same to Tuggeranong wining the 2010 match 30-28. If these two past Grand Finals are anything to go by, then this will be one hell of a match. Like previous seasons, it has been all Vikings and this season was no different. Tuggeranong went through the regular season losing only one match which just so happened to be there last regular season game which was in round 13. They have had a far more superior for and against and won the minor premiership being 16 points clear of nearest rival Queanbeyan. However as Tuggeranong found out it is a different ball game come finals time and were upset by Queanbeyan. The loss was a rude awaking, but Vikings were quick to turn in around making easy work of Gungahlin in the Preliminary Final winning 59-12. Queanbeyan this year had an up and down season, winning 5 of their 6 games games away from home, but uncharacteristically losing 4 of their 6 home games. The Whites managed to secure second spot on the ladder by the smallest of margins, 1 point. That one point was enough to give Queanbeyan the opportunity to get an early entry into the Grand Final which they took with both hands and are now 80 minutes away from ending Tuggeranong’s dominance over the John I Dent Cup. Queanbeyan have only made one change to the side that got them through and what a change it is with Queanbeyan local and Brumbies contract player Robbie Coleman coming into the run on side. The inclusion of him will add a spark in the back line while giving the rest of the team a spring in there step. While his inclusion is a massive boost, the Whites will also look for inspiration from there illustrious leader Dan Penca, who leads his team from the front in both attack and defence. Dan and Robbie will be backed up by Front Rower Les Makin and young gun Keith Morgan who is enjoying his first year of senior rugby. One thing Tuggeranong has a major advantage over Queanbeyan is Grand Final experience with 10 of the starting side being a part of last year Grand Final success while a large chunk of those players having also played in the previous 2012 and 2011 winning sides. Coach Brad Harris has named an unchanged line-up to the one that played in the preliminary final so that starting side will be confident in there attacking ability, but will be fully aware they will be tested in defence. The key match ups in this game will be the battle of 7’s with youngster Rowan Perry taking on seasoned veteran Dan Penca and the fullback’s Brendon Taueki and Brendon Spears. Taueki is renowned for his silky touches and chiming into the line at the right time, while Spears in big and powerful and a handful to bring down on the counter attack. Both clubs love to through the footy around and they understand the importance of dominance at set piece and the breakdown so we can expect this match to be one hotly contested Grand Final and no doubt we will see some fireworks in both attack and defence.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals displayed a dominant 1st half in the Major Semi Final against the Owls which proved to be the difference as the lead was too big for Uni to chase down. Royals are looking for their first championship since 2011, while Uni-Norths last grand final title was in 2009 so we expect both teams to not hold anything back.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals were far too good for Tuggeranong in the Major Semi Final out playing their opponents, however Vikings sent a message loud and clear last weekend dismantling Gungahlin 55-5. Royals will be confident coming into this match on the back of their last performance, but are well aware of Vikings capabilities to score from anywhere on the field. This match will have plenty of running rugby.
