any of us wish for a long lasting youthful, wrinkle prone skin for as long as possible. As the years go by we start to realize that it is no easy task to keep that wish intact. Our hopes of staying and looking younger starts to fade year after year. However, now more than ever in history the advancements in technologies and biochemistry has made it possible to elongate having a youthful appearance. Unless you are blessed genetically with great skin, here are few ways to keep you looking young despite the clock ticking:

LIFESTYLE We now realize that our skin ages with bad habits such as; smoking, drinking, lack of sleep, stress and tanning. The key to a healthy body in general and skin specifically is balance and moderation. In addition, science is proving now more than ever that our internal being is also a big factor in how we look on the outside. Practicing positive mental affirmations and having gratitude enhances not only our mental and emotional health but it will also impact our physical being including our aging process. SKINCARE Many people don’t use proper skincare or don’t use them at all period. Some just don’t see the value in investing in a good skincare regimen. Medical and pharmaceutical grade products are by far the most effective lines with active ingredients. They are formulated with an advanced delivery system to penetrate deeper into the skin’s live tissues and repair any damage. There are 3 functions of skincare.

• •

Protection daytime against environmental elements such as UV rays and pollution Repair night time when the skin is regenerating newer cells and correcting whatever damage occurred in the day

B E A U T Y

THE SECRET TO SKIN LONGEVITY

Antioxidants & peptides such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Hylaronic Acid & stem cells growth factors will certainly slow down the aging process of the skin. Oxidation causes aging & we need antioxidants to reverse or stop that damage from happening in the first place.

These latest ingredients should be in everyone skincare regimen as early as in our twenties. SKIN TREATMENTS Our skin’s cell turn over slows down as we age just like everything else. With time we also lose Collagen and Elastin which are the primary skin fibres that keep the skin tighter amd younger looking. Here are some advanced skin treatments that can correct and maintain the skin’s longevity

Peels and Microdermabrasions: We need to manually exfoliate our dead skin through means of chemical or mechanical exfoliation. These treatments will even out the skin tone & texture revealing a more youthful appearance. Ideal for all ages Photofacials: these light based treatments are great to correct and reverse any sun damage and add radiance to the skin. Ideal for skin with uneven tone, discoloration, rosacea and dull complexion.

Skin tightening is becoming one of the most popular non-invasive anti-aging treatments using the skin own ability to correct itself and produce new collagen and elastin. This high tech device uses radio frequency to stimulate the skin natural fibers producing newer and more collagen. Ideal for 40+ Sun damage, this is one of the most important anti-aging elements yet it isn’t practiced enough because most people believe that sun damage only occurs during sun exposure. However, skin damage occurs with UVA rays that penetrate through clouds, glass, while driving and snowy days. Not to mention with technology and lights all around us, these also age the skin. Using high grade medical SPF minimum 30 will protect our skin live cells from DNA damage.

Having knowledge and applying that knowledge in our daily lives is the power to achieve whatever we desire. This information if applied consistently will produce great results. The ideal outcome is looking good for your age not looking 20 years younger because that doesn’t look natural. Looking more youthful naturally is becoming the trend now.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THE NEW STARZ TELEVISION SERIES ASH VS. EVIL DEAD? I play Pablo, an idealistic immigrant who works with Ash at the Value Stop. He is the heart and good conscience of the show. He’s also Ash’s main homie and best friend. As a kid Pablo was told by his family that there is evil in the world to fear. He didn’t believe them, but when he comes into contact with the evil force himself, he believes Ash is the person to save the world from the Evil Dead. Pablo is also Ash’s cheerleader. He idolizes Ash and ultimately becomes his side-kick --- the first Latino side-kick to a horror franchise on TV! WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE ROLE TO DATE? I would have to say playing Pablo is my favorite role to date. WHO HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE ACTOR TO WORK ALONGSIDE? I would have to choose two; Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. YOU’RE FROM THE BRONX IN NEW YORK, WHAT DO YOU MISS THE MOST ABOUT THE PLACE? My mom’s home cooking.

WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Chocolate and truffle cheese! NAME ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? Laughing. WHAT SONG DO YOU HAVE TO TURN UP EVERY TIME YOU HEAR IT ON THE RADIO? Iggy Pop’s “I Wanna Be Your Dog” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL TO COOK? I make a mean scramble with Sriracha. WHAT HORROR MOVIE DID YOU LOVE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? I love the original “Nightmare on Elm Street”, and the original “Halloween” as well. WHAT DOES 2016 HOLD FOR YOU? Another season of shooting and giving life to the Evil Dead series. I also have two other movies coming out in 2016 one called “Trash Fire”, and the other, “Addiction: A 60’s Love Story.” FOLLOW AND GET MORE OF RAY SANTIAGO ON HIS SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS: twitter.com/RealRaySantiago | instagram.com/iagoray

It’s such a thrill to collaborate with them and take matters into our own hands. Producing and creating your own content is both liberating and empowering!

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ACTING? I attended The Red Shoes on Broadway when I was nine, and witnessed Karen dance herself to death. It stole my heart. I also saw Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard and that pretty much sealed the deal moving forward. I was always finding ways to perform!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Classic, form fitting, a bit of a hippie-witch vibe perhaps. I like black with the occasional foray into more colorful territory. I own a plethora of boots! Cowboy boots remain at the top of that list, obviously. Texas Forever.

DO YOU ENJOY WORKING ON A TELEVISION SHOW OR DO YOU PREFER FILMS? Working on the second season of From Dusk Till Dawn was such a privilege because I got to step into this meticulously crafted world with such strong and vibrant characters. The foundation and story have been long established, so it was exciting to find new ways to breathe life into it and expand. It has definitely been a different experience than making a film. I thoroughly enjoy both!

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNER AT THE MOMENT? It’s a toss-up between Vivienne Westwood and Dolce & Gabbana.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER ALICE IN FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. As the feisty head waitress at Jacknife Jed’s, she’s got more than just your order. Part snake, part vampire (aka culebra),she will literally eat your heart out and consume your soul through your blood. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST FAVOURITE ROLL TO DATE? Stepping into Alice’s boots down in Austin this past summer was nothing short of a riot. I’d say she can take the (chocolate) cake for now. NAME THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Dior show Iconic Mascara in Navy, Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play Hairspray, and Coconut oil!

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Probably chocolate. I am very creative when it comes to chocolate usage and consumption. NAME ONE THING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO DO? I want to travel to Ireland with my mother (Linda) and the other Irish loves of my life. We’re Irish! The motherland is calling. WHAT OTHER PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? I’m working on a couple of short films with a few friends who have inspired me deeply over the years. It’s such a thrill to collaborate with them and take matters into our own hands. Producing and creating your own content is both liberating and empowering! WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU ON SOCIAL MEDIA? My full name is Blair Healy Bomar. Healy was my Irish Grandmother’s surname. I’m @HealyBlair on Instagram and Twitter ;)

CHICKEN STROGANOFF WITH CHANTERELLES & VANILLA makes 4 servings By JONATHAN WAXMAN

T H E

S T Y L I S H

L I F E

M A G A Z I N E

L I F E

INGREDIENTS SPAETZLE (GERMAN NOODLE) •

1 egg yolk

1 egg, large

1 cup cream

1½ plain/all-purpose flour

1 tsp kosher or sea salt

1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 Tbsp olive oil

CHICKEN •

2 chicken breast (organic, skin on and boneless)

½ cup unsalted butter

2 shallots

4 cups fresh chanterelle mushrooms,* washed and dried

1 Tbsp Tio Pepe**

1 tsp vanilla seeds, 1 pod

1/2 cup crème fraîche

* Or, if unavailable, a selection of field mushrooms. ** This classic bone-dry sherry from Andalucia, Spain enhances the flavour of pure vanilla.

DIRECTIONS SPAETZLE In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk, egg and cream together. In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt and pepper. Add butter and the egg mixture to the flour mixture and mix by hand until well blended. Do not overmix at this stage. Cover the bowl and refrigerate. Allow the batter to rest for at least 1 hour.

In a large saucepan/pot, bring 1 L/1 qt of salted water to a simmer. Prepare a bowl of ice water. Using a colander, force the batter in batches through the holes into the simmering water. The spaetzle will cook in 3 minutes. When they float to the top, use a slotted spoon to scoop the noodles into the bowl of ice water to prevent overcooking. When cold, drain and dry. Add olive oil to prevent spaetzle sticking together. Set aside until needed.

CHICKEN Slice the chicken breast into 8 slices per breast. Season with sea salt and pepper. Using a heavy casserole pan, add half the butter and brown the chicken slices. Remove the chicken and add remaining butter to the pan. Add the shallots and chanterelles and cook until browned slightly. Add the Tio Pepe and the vanilla, cook for 2 minutes, then stir in the crème fraîche. Reintroduce the chicken slices. Heat to a simmer and add the spaetzle. Toss well, season and serve hot

Brimz

industry insider with

BY JENNIFER STEELE

R

ecently moved into a new shop, Dameion Royes and his team have been busy preparing for the new year with their collection of high quality, stylish hats. Hats of all kinds, in fact, from fedoras and Mountie hats to casual sport caps and toques, Brimz specializes in topping off each look with finesse. Dameion and I chat all things hats as I get a closer look inside his world.

L I F E

FIRST OF ALL, I HAVE TO ASK, WHY HATS? WHAT IS IT ABOUT HATS THAT GET YOU EXITED? Why not hats? Hats are a very exciting accessory. They have the power to transform regular mortals into fashion superheroes. Pop stars know and use this knowledgeable power well. TELL US YOUR STORY. WHO MAKES UP YOUR TEAM AND HOW DID BRIMZ OFFICIAL FIRST COME ABOUT? Our team is comprised of three pivotal players - Jack Vilayvong, designer and brand social connector, Taha Muharuma, Brimz brand manager/social media director and Dameion Royes, designer and brand visionary. WHAT DO YOU THINK IT TAKES TO BUILD A REPUTABLE BRAND IN TODAY’S MARKETPLACE? To build a reputable brand takes brand consistency and authentic output over time; good work is a process of trial and error - the nurturing of a relationship with a community/audience that develops on trust and a belief in the gospel of your output.

always say that to wear a hat comfortably you must “take your mind out of the equation” and then you wear it with ease - if you over think it, it has already conquered you. And for the record I have over 250 hats in my collection. These are hats I’ve collected over the years from all our previous collections WHO HAS BEEN YOUR MUSE? AND HAVE YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH ANYONE INSPIRATIONAL IN THE INDUSTRY? Over the course of the last two years, men have been the most influential for headwear fashion, such as pop star Pharrell Williams and Future Hendrix the rapper. What we’ve love about both is the fact that they’ve embraced hats and have used them to infuse their own personal styles. They have helped to widen the options for avant garde fashionistas that want more than a simple standard. Also, they have given others the courage to try hats who have never tried them before. DAMEION ROYES FOUNDER

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED ALONG THE WAY WITH BRIMZ OFFICIAL? The challenges faced at Brimz Official have been numerous and the latest one was being forced out of our former location and having to relocate to our new 311 A Queen St. W address. For small businesses it’s very important to stabilize the unknowns that can balloon into large unforeseen costs. Finding great locations - not too large, but with good landlords - are slim. I think we must create cooperatives that give new designers and retailers an infrastructure and a fighting chance to make it. WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU EXCITED TO SEE FOR THIS COMING SPRING/SUMMER 2016? Spring/Summer means lots of sun and “wide brims” have played a major role in the return of the hat. So we’re really excited to get the opportunity to go to town on these wide brims 3”, 4” and 5” brims. They are going to be the pride and glory of our music fest attending audience. There’s also some real development in the streetwear cap category. Unique leather and suede detailing will be much more prevalent as this category continues to grow in a high end direction. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE, AND HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE HATS INTO YOUR WARDROBE? (YOU MUST HAVE A CLOSET DEDICATED TO YOUR OWN HATSJ) I describe my personal style as chic comfort infused with an element of the classic. I simply think of hats in the same way as I do socks and pick a style and colour that compliments my outfit. Once it’s on I simply forget about it - just like you do your socks. We

Recently, we have had the opportunity to work with Francesco Yates and made some pretty spectacular Francesco “Blue” beauties for him.

IT SEEMS YOU PRIDE YOURSELF ON BEING HOME GROWN AND A DEDICATED BRAND TO THE CITY OF TORONTO. WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE INSPIRATIONAL ABOUT THIS CITY AND HOW HAS IT INFLUENCED YOUR DESIGNS? Yes, we do pride ourselves on being home grown; the beauty of Toronto is the multi-cultural fabric which has hybridized into so many new innovations. We are part of the new innovation and find it to be a great time to be alive for riding this massive cultural wave. All signs point to a cultural renaissance that’s incorporating music, art, fashion; entrepreneurism and it all intersects and provides the essential building blocks for industrious people who see the potential to create something special. Furthermore, what’s really cool is Toronto developing its own aesthetic and confidence. This new found confidence has designers collaborating more freely and that influences our design choices more and more. WHAT IS YOUR BEST SELLING PRODUCT AND WHAT MAKES IT A TOP SELLER? Our best seller is a fur felt fedora called The Boss. It’s from our “Made-In-Canada” collection and retails for $165.00. It is most popular because of its shape and 3” brim size, which is not too obtrusive. Our customers love the fact that it’s fully customizable for only an extra $40, and is available in 6 colourways. It looks great and doesn’t require you to dress up. We recommend wearing it with sneakers and your persona gets an instant boost!

JACK VILAYVONG PARTNER

WHAT WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT AND ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO LOCAL, CREATIVE TALENT SUCH AS YOURSELVES? I would advise any new local, creative talent to really think about their vision and once that vision is clear remain gimmick free and work to be true to that vision. Know your customer and learn what it is they expect from you and over deliver on that expectation. Moreover, master your art and market your expertise. T H E

hether you’re walking down the street, devouring your third coffee of the morning or in the middle of a friendly conversation, every time you look up from your phone the same thing catches your eye: over and over. Like an unbalanced seesaw, you look up, they look down and in some twisted virtual reality we’re all connected. Digital Trends reports that a recent study by the Informate Mobile Intelligence reports, the average person spends 4.7 hours per day on their phone. That’s a whole lot of texting, which often leads to a whole lot of sexting. With the click of a button, lovers of all sorts are now relying on descriptive words and revealing photos to ignite a full day of foreplay. Whether fighting the kids’ calls or double-booked schedules in order to get the most of your morning quickie, sexting brings back the basics: unadulterated fun.

With the beginning stages of foreplay moving to finger action of a different nature, your imagination begins to tap into widespread (pun intended) desires rooted in fantasy. The perfect nudge for couples looking to spice up their sex life, those facing the challenges of long-distance relationships or singles trying to step up their flirting game, sexting is all about pushing the boundaries. It’s about letting go and getting off. Your chance to describe everything you’ve ever wished to do to the person on the other end of the line. Let go of all the rules: no safe word required (except pound, suck, spank and lick). And unlike dirty talk during the act of sex, you have time to catch your breath, think and send a creative response worthy of an early lunch break.

Not knowing how to respond the right way to a dirty message can end up with a big old flop (literally).

WARNING: THESE DAYS, A BAD SEXTER IS EQUIVALENT TO A BAD KISSER. Not knowing how to respond the right way to a dirty message can end up with a big old flop (literally). Remember don’t give AF: the dirtier, the better. Consider these pointers the next time you reach for your phone, you’re welcome in advance. BE A TEASE. In fact, be whoever you want to be and stray from the norm. Think roleplaying: without the stereotypical, too tight in all the wrong places costume. LET ‘EM SWEAT IT OUT. You’ve got a full day to play: build up the excitement by not replying immediately. GO LONG, GET HARD. Desk duty all day: let there at least be a solid reason. NO FIZZLE ALLOWED. Make it happen: when you get the chance, act on all of that pent up sexual tension. GET SEXTY, GET SMART. Feel comfortable with the person you’re sharing all of your dirty secrets with.
