Rabbi Rabbi Sobel Sobel ‘s ‘s Reflections Reflections Walking Toward the Center: Preparing for the This summer, I walked two labyrinths in our area. The first was the labyrinth at Avalon Park in Old Stony Brook. It was my first visit to Avalon and it was breathtaking! We are so fortunate to be living here surrounded by such great natural beauty. We walked the park at dusk, arriving at the labyrinth in silence. Labyrinths are not like mazes: once you begin to walk, the path always leads to the center. There is no right way to walk. The goal of walking the labyrinth is to help one find a sense of calm, meaning and peace in one’s life. By walking the labyrinth with purpose, keeping focused on the path, being intentional about staying centered on one’s body, and being open to the experience of the labyrinth itself, we are told that “walking the labyrinth helps to understand thoughts and feelings, soothes and calms one’s spirit.” It has been said that walking the labyrinth can

We try to be intentional about staying focused on the path of renewal and t’shuvah – repentance. And we are hopeful that the experience of this time of introspection, soul-searching and reflection will not just “sooth and calm our spirit,” but will lead us to spiritual fulfillment. We hope that when we reach the “center” – the High Holy Days themselves, we emerge from this time renewed, refreshed and recommitted to our Jewish community, to God and to the best of ourselves.

Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen Members of Temple Isaiah’s Social Action Committee help staff Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen at St. James Catholic Church (429 Route 25A in Setauket). Each Sunday afternoon, dinner is provided to over 100 adults and children, by teams of volunteers working on a rotating schedule. Although housed at St. James Parish, the group itself comprises participants from various community faith-based groups and organizations. Volunteers in this organization serve in a variety of ways, including food planning, cooking, serving and cleanup, as well as providing transportation, supervision of the nursery area, pantry and clothing distribution. September 7, 1827 (Russia) Czar Nicholas I proclaimed his Statute of Conscription and Military Service which allowed Jewish youths between 12 and 18 to be forcibly conscripted into the army and forced to serve for 25 years. A quota was placed on the Jewish community. Often, children as young as 8 were kidnapped in order to fill quotas. September 8, 1947 (Germany) The refugee ship Exodus turned back to Hamburg after its cargo of 4,500 Holocaust survivors was removed by force, attracting world attention. This act, more than any other, helped force international public opinion against British policy, which refused Jewish refugees entrance into Palestine. David Ben-Gurion
September 18, 1862 (United States) During the Civil War, Jacob Frankel was appointed the first Jewish chaplain in the U.S. Army by President Abraham Lincoln. Only Christians were previously accepted as chaplains. October 13, 1843 (United States) B’nai B’rith was founded in New York, with the purpose of maintaining orphanages and homes for the elderly and widows. Beautification Fund
It’s always the "right time" to make a contribution to your Temple. It might be in honor of a living person or a recent event, or in memory of someone or something, or anything you want. Donations can be made over the phone, by email, or through the USPS. However you send the information, your donation can be added to your monthly Temple Isaiah invoice for easy bookkeeping. Sunshine cards require a minimum contribution of ten dollars.
The purpose of the Beautification Fund is to generate money to renovate and beautify our synagogue. All monies will go into a fund dedicated to this purpose.
Minimum contribution is $10 Prayer Book: $45 Chumash: $60 Tree of Life Leaf: $118 Pew Plaque: $250 Memorial Board Plaque: $360 Please call the office for more information regarding the above contributions.
To assist in this goal, a wall sculpture has been commissioned. This permanent work of art provides the opportunity to commemorate your support for Temple Isaiah.
