Welkom op Read My World en welkom op onze literaire reis naar de uiterste oostgrenzen van Europa: het vizier en de pen zijn dit jaar gericht op Polen en Oekraïne, een regio die op barsten staat. Oekraïne is in oorlog en in Polen woedt een conservatieve storm, met als recente uitwas de vervanging van partijkritische journalisten bij de publieke omroep door partijgezinde journalisten. De schrijvers uit deze landen staan al eeuwen, en ook nu, in de frontlinie. Bijna nergens in de wereld is literatuur nog zo belangrijk, nog zo invloedrijk, zowel in het parlement als aan de keukentafel. Wij gaan ze dit jaar leren kennen, de nieuwe stemmen van het protest en de verbeelding, die ageren tegen de massa, die hun woede uiten om wat er gekaapt wordt en hun rouw uitjammeren om wat er verloren gaat. De vonk van de Majdan-generatie is alles behalve gedoofd, sterker nog: hij is naar alle kanten overgeslagen. De wederzijdse nieuwsgierigheid is groot en berust op een eeuwenoude verbondenheid die zich niets aantrekt van de grenzen die door oorlogen en wereldrijken in dit gebied zijn getrokken. Het is een generatie die zich niet de mond laat snoeren door populisme, repressie en oorlogsretoriek. Het is een Europese generatie. En juist om die reden is het van belang dat we Oost-Europa dichterbij halen. In hoeverre kloppen de ideeën die de nieuwe generatie daar heeft over Europa bij de beleving van datzelfde Europa bij de jongere generatie hier? Is er een verwantschap tussen de jongere generatie schrijvers hier en de jongere generatie daar? Over welke thema’s schrijven ze, waar gaat hun literatuur over, hoe reflecteert die op de wereld waarin ze leven? Read My World heeft dit jaar twee curatoren bereid gevonden om de redactie in Amsterdam door hun wereld te gidsen: Iryna Vikyrchak uit Oekraïne en Grzegorz Jankowicz uit Polen. Zij vormen de bron van het programma dat voor u ligt. Op de volgende pagina’s stellen zij zich aan u voor. RZ O G E GRZ OWICZ JANK Heart of Poland In Kraków we organize a literary festival named after Joseph Conrad. You all know him as the giant of modern English literature. Some of you may recall that he was Polish, born in Ukraine, and living in Poland for some time. After many years spent in Great Britain, he became a point of reference for other writers and critics - recognized and praised for stylistic mastery as well as for his political observations. In one of the interviews he referred to the profound core of his writings detected by British readers as something cryptic. He described this peculiar phenomenon as the heart of his Polish soul - something he drew from Polish culture. Polish writers invited to this year’s edition of the Read My World festival will not only present to you this complex/dark/undisclosed essence of our culture, but also address a similar cryptic element in your own language, a part of your cultural and political experience. We may differ in many aspects, but the fact we have something special in our cultures gives us a unique opportunity to initiate a process of mutual translation. Let’s try to translate our experiences not only into other languages, but also into certain forms of life we create in Polish and Dutch societies. The process of translation can be compared to the long walk from one place to another. This is a simple and modest invitation sent to you, Dutch readers, by Polish authors. We invite you to walk with us for a few days in your own city of Amsterdam. During this walk we will present to you our ways of putting together themes of contemporary Poland, Europe, and the world. Guernica Imagine a vast room with high ceiling, a studio. There are people in the room creators, writers and artists, volunteers and scholars. All of them are doing their usual work. But something in this room interferes with all the artworks, texts and minds of people there. Sometimes subtly, unconsciously, sometimes in a vivid, painful and personal way. That object in the room that creates the atmosphere is the famous Guernica by Pablo Picasso, occupying one of the walls. A mural, which has become a symbol warning humanity against the devastation and chaos caused by violence in any form. The same situation takes place in Ukraine nowadays – the whole vast space is filled with creative powers, young and resourceful, longing and working for transformation and growth. Everybody is doing their own thing. But the military conflict, though only covering about 8% of Ukraine’s huge territory, is there. Life thrives beyond it, but Guernica, this most known anti-war visual symbol, has become the part of our lives and of course, literature. The Ukrainian writers invited to the Read My World festival are the voices that remind us that culture, and literature in particular, are universal carriers of messages of shared global values, the most important and most urgent of which is peace. Meet our guests! Tonight we kick off the fourth edition of the festival with all of our Polish and Ukrainian writers on stage. They will introduce themselves to you in quick succession. Exclusively for Read My World, laurelled travel-writer Ilija Trojanow will deliver a keynote speech in which he delves into the dilemmas of a documentary writer. Versatile performance artist Babs Gons, accompanied by the Touki Delphine Experience band, will give a theatrical impression of her borderless Europe. Regie: R. Bondarchuk (Duitsland, 2015, 85’, Engelse ondertiteling) Op het platteland van Oekraïne is een groot tekort aan politiemensen. Om deze lacune op te vangen is men in Stara Zburivka op het lumineuze idee gekomen om de sterkste en slimste mannen van het dorp tot sheriffs te benoemen. Het droogkomische plattelandsleed wordt doorkruist door de rap naderende oorlog, die de mannen dwingt tot het maken van essentiële keuzes.

Maar alles verandert als blijkt dat ze nog een levende tante heeft, Wanda. Anna ontdekt dat ze van Joodse afkomst is, dat haar echte naam Ida luidt en wordt geconfronteerd met de grimmige waarheid over haar familie.

Kovalenko (Oekraïne, 2015, 75’, Engelse ondertiteling) Alisa is student aan de filmacademie in Kiev wanneer de inwoners daar de straat op gaan om het aftreden van hun president eisen. Alisa pakt de camera en begint een reis door Oekraïne om de onrust te begrijpen. Onderweg wordt ze geconfronteerd met beschietingen, bomexplosies en de schrijnende gevolgen van de oorlog voor de bevolking. Als ze gearresteerd wordt, wordt Alisa zelf onderdeel van de oorlog.

Kovalenko (Ukraine, 2015, 75’, English subtitles) When the Ukrainian people take to the streets to demand their president’s resignation, film student Alisa sets out to document the unrest. Alisa is confronted with shootings, explosions and the harrowing consequences of war. When she is arrested, Alisa becomes part of the war herself.

LITERATURE AND POLITICS

Does one precede the other? Ever since people study literature the question arises: does fiction follow or does it shape reality? It is obvious - from allegories on people living in caves via descriptions of utopian islands to present day dystopian novels – the two cannot exist without one another. Both deal with imagination and reflection, and sometimes the lines blur. In the recent histories of both countries we have seen many events happening we never thought of, we even never imagined, or did we? In a public talk Ja Kapela of Krytyka Polityzcna Poland and Anna Kravets of Krytyka Polityzcna Ukraine will discuss these questions with writers Olga Tokarczuk and Andrey Kurkov whom both lived through various political regimes in their countries. How do they think about the relation between literature and politics? Or: what role does literature play in their countries? This programme is supported by European Cultural Foundation (ECF)

Nu Europa steeds meer onthecht raakt en de Europese landen zich steeds onafhankelijker profileren wordt de zoektocht naar de Europese identiteit diffuser. De Oekraïense schrijver Andriy Lyubka en de Poolse journalist/essayist Mariusz Szczygieł zijn elk op hun manier gefascineerd door de Europese ‘ander’. De hoofdpersoon van Lyubka’s meest recente roman Karbid graaft een tunnel onder de grens van Oekraïne met de Europese Unie, om zijn land voorgoed met het continent te verbinden. Szczygieł, die zichzelf als een ‘crypto-Tsjech’ beschouwt, vindt in de cultuur van zijn zuiderburen de ideale remedie tegen Poolse pathos en tragiek. Heartland Europe As Europe gradually becomes more detached and European countries seek to establish more independence, the search for European identity is becoming increasingly diffuse. Ukrainian writer Andriy Lyubka and Polish journalist/essayist Mariusz Szczygieł are both fascinated by the European ‘other’. Drie grote feministische auteurs, Anja Meulenbelt, Astrid H. De Poolse dichteres Julia Fiedorczuk en de Nederlandse filosofe, schrijfster, singer-songwriter en beeldend kunstenares Eva Meijer gaan hierover met elkaar in gesprek, zowel vanuit hun eco-kritische perspectief als aan de hand van voorbeelden uit hun eigen werk.

Touki Delphine Experience What started as a special occasion band during the Europe Endless Express will be reprised at Read My World, with festival band Touki Delphine Experience accompanying writers, poets and singers with angular electro, laid-back mid-tempo beats and rattling percussion. The cool guys of TDE have a rep to protect when it comes to film-, theatre-, and pop music, and can improvise on the spot like no other. Hear and see them in action on Friday and Saturday, every hour on the hour in the foyer!

P A H C S N E T E DE W E ID H C S F A T E H VA N De wetenschap van het afscheid De wetenschap van het afscheid is een korte muzikale voorstelling waarin schrijver Renée van Marissing en pianist Nora Mulder zich verhouden tot het verhaal van de vertelster uit Oksana Zabuzhko’s Veldonderzoek naar Oekraïense seks. Het verhaal van een vrouw die zich in een wervelende tirade los probeert te vechten van de resten van een voorbije relatie en van haar vaderland om zichzelf bevrijd te kunnen voelen.

The Science of Parting The Science of Parting is a short musical performance in which writer Renée van Marissing and pianist Nora Mulder reflect on Oksana Zabuzhko’s Field Study on Ukrainian Sex. The story of a woman who fights to free herself from a past relationship and from her fatherland in order to feel liberated.

Hoe kwam je op idee voor Op de grens en welke onderwerpen komen er aan bod? Onze curator Grzegorz vertelde me dat het ‘Poolse landschap’, dat een grote rol speelt in de Poolse schilderkunst en literatuur, nu op Oekraïens volksgebied ligt. Het laat zien hoe de geschiedenis van de twee landen verknoopt is en dat grenzen veranderlijk zijn. Wat is ‘Pools’ en wat is ‘Oekraïens’ als grenzen verschuiven? Hoe wenselijk zijn grenzen als ze dienen voor uitsluiting en oorlog? Hoe schrijven auteurs daarover als ze die grenzen opzoeken, vroeg ik me af. Naar welk ander programma kijk je uit? Ik kijk erg uit naar Literature and Politics (p.14). Juist op momenten zoals nu, waarop de wereld in brand staat, is het belangrijk om literatuur niet in een vacuüm te bekijken. In Oekraïne en Polen is de vraag wat literatuur en politiek met elkaar te maken hebben ontzettend relevant nu politieke vrijheden onder druk komen te staan en Oekraïne in oorlog is. Ik ben heel nieuwsgierig hoe een jonge generatie auteurs (die de Sovjet-Unie nauwelijks bewust meemaakte) daarmee omgaat. Lisanne Snelders is redacteur van Read My World

Andrey Kurkov gaat in gesprek met Arie van der Ent, uitgever van Douane.

Book presentation Diary Maidan by Andrey Kurkov Publisher Douane and Read My World present the Dutch translation of Dnevnik Maydana (Dagboek Maidan, 2015). Kurkov offers a glimpse into his daily life as a writer living in Kiev during Euromaidan, the protests that broke out when it became clear that Ukraine would not sign the association treaty with the EU. Literaire confrontaties met historische mythes en geweld Schrijvers die het nationaal geweten proberen aan te spreken worden geregeld het mikpunt van haat. Is het verstandig om gevoelige onderwerpen uit het verleden zoals gewelddadige onderdrukking of genocide in een historische roman te ontrafelen? Of kun je dit soort thema’s beter aan historici overlaten? In dit programma worden de (literaire) degens gekruist over ‘haatspraak’ en geweld, met o.m. Olga Tokarczuk die met haar uitspraken over de zwarte bladzijden uit de Poolse geschiedenis een ware haatcampagne over zich heen heeft gekregen, en Frank Westerman die met zijn meest recente boek Een woord, een woord een weerwoord op terreur zoekt.

U O Y L L E T LET ME E WORDS ’B O U T T H B E E S AND THE Let me tell you ’bout the words and the bees Het politieke engagement lijkt haar rentree te hebben gemaakt in de Nederlandse literatuur. Er wordt echter weinig geschreven over het milieu en tegen haar vervuilers. Twee dichters, Julia Fiedorczuk en Maartje Smits, hebben in aanloop naar het festival met elkaar van gedachten gewisseld over hun schrijven en welke rol het milieu daarin speelt. Vandaag zullen zij elkaar voor het eerst in levenden lijve ontmoeten. Met beeldend kunstenaar Klaske Oenema en saxofonist Jan Klug treden ze ’s avonds op tijdens een performance met poëzie, muziek en beeld.

Let me tell you ’bout the words and the bees Political engagement seems to be back on the Dutch literary scene. However, not much is being written about the environment and against its polluters. In the lead up to this festival, poets Julia Fiedorczuk and Maartje Smits exchanged thoughts about the role the environment plays in their writing. Today they will meet in the flesh for the first time. Performing with visual artist Klaske Oenema and saxophonist Jan Klug, they will blend poetry, music and visuals.

Elephant in the room

‘Don’t mention the war,’ de gevleugelde Fawlty Towers-uitdrukking, dringt zich onvermijdelijk op wanneer je als festival je pijlen richt op Polen en de Oekraïne. Het grote boze R-woord hangt continu als een zwaard van Damocles boven alle gesprekken, voordrachten en discussies die de komende dagen gevoerd zullen worden. Toch is het in de loop van de geschiedenis altijd de taak van de schrijver geweest om de oorlog juist wél te noemen. In Elephant in the room zoomen we in op de Oekraïense situatie: wat betekent een dreigende grootmacht aan de buitengrenzen van Europa voor de vrijheid van meningsuiting? Wat is je taak als schrijver? De Oekraïense auteur Oksana Zabuzhko is een felle criticaster van Rusland, maar wat betekent dit voor haar autonome schrijverschap? In dit programma gaat Zabuzhko over deze onontkoombare vraagstukken in gesprek met slaviste Ellen Rutten en schrijver en reiziger Auke Hulst.

Elephant in the room ‘Don’t mention the war,’ the famous phrase coined by Fawlty Towers, inevitably comes up when the focus of your festival is on Poland and the Ukraine. Like the sword of Damocles, the R-word hangs above all conversations, readings and discussions. Yet it has always been the role of the writer to address the elephant in the room. In this programme we zoom in on the Ukrainian situation: How does the superpower looming just across the European border affect freedom of speech? What is your responsibility as a writer? Ukrainian author Oksana Zabuzhko is a fierce critic of Russia, but what does that mean for her autonomy as a writer? In this programme Zabuzhko discusses these imperative questions with professor of Slavic studies Ellen Rutten and writer and traveller Auke Hulst.

Steeds vaker hoor je de roep om ‘een sterke leider’, hoe komt dat? Zit het ergens in de mens, dat verlangen jezelf ondergeschikt te maken aan een leider? Why we (don’t) love our dictators is een inhoudelijk én onderhoudend programma met columns, discussie en cabaret.

Why we (don’t) love our dictators In Europe we still insist that parliamentary democracy is the best system of government in the world. Reality suggests otherwise. In Russia, Vladimir Putin has never been so popular. Many in Turkey see Erdogan as a hero. Around the world there seems to be an increasing desire for strong leaders. Why? Is it inherently human to wish to subjugate ourselves to a leader? Why We (Don’t) Love Our Dictators is an informative and entertaining programme featuring columns, discussions and cabaret.

LITERAIRE VUURPOTPOURRI Literaire vuurpotpourri Zaterdagavond worden de vuren ontstoken in de mooiste tuin van Amsterdam en nemen muzikanten en verhalenvertellers daarbij plaats om al vertellend en zingend de nacht in te luiden. Verwacht bij die vuren bijvoorbeeld violist, trompettist en verhalenverteller Dolan Jones die samen met Anje Robertson de geschiedenis van een teruggevonden viool zal terughalen, een geschiedenis die leidt van Amsterdam naar Poolse vernietigingskampen. Dean Bowen zal plaats nemen bij het vuur om daar zijn poëzie ten gehore te brengen. Columnist en verhalenverteller Esra Seval Dede put inspiratie voor haar verhalen uit haar eigen leven als jonge vrouw met een Turkse achtergrond in Nederland. Een perfect programma om je door de tuin dolend en in het vuur turend mee te laten slepen naar alle uithoeken van taal, klank en wereld.

Fireside Literature On Saturday evening campfires will illuminate the most beautiful garden in Amsterdam as musicians and storytellers come together to usher in the night. Listen to violinist, trumpet player and storyteller Dolan Jones and Anje Robertson tell the history of a rediscovered violin, a history that leads from Amsterdam to the extermination camps in Poland. Dean Bowen will take place fireside and recite his poetry. TSEAD TIPT Hoe kwam je op het idee voor Let me tell you ’bout the Words and the Bees en wat gaan we zien tijdens het programma? Ik kwam op het idee voor door het lezen van het werk van Julia Fiedorczuk en dan met name het in het Engels vertaalde korte verhaal ‘Weightlessness’ over een zwerfster die een slaapplek zoekt op een Pools volkstuinencomplex. Toen ik mij wat meer verdiepte in haar achtergrond stuitte ik op haar interesse in eco-literatuur. Rond diezelfde tijd zat ik vaak in de trein van Amsterdam naar Arnhem met collega-dichter Maartje Smits. Zij vertelde mij over het houden van bijen en haar interesse in de natuur. Smits’s sterke debuutbundel Als je een meisje bent gaat dan weliswaar niet zo zeer over die natuur maar wel over het vrouw zijn en worden wat dan weer goed aansloot bij een van de thema’s van het festival, namelijk het feminisme. Ik was benieuwd naar wat deze twee dichters elkaar over beide onderwerpen te vertellen hebben en vroeg ze een briefwisseling op te zetten. Net als vorig jaar wilde ik graag een dag lang met dichters, muzikanten en beeldend kunstenaars werken met als doel om tot een performance te komen. Door twee van die deelnemers een paar maanden daarvoor al aan elkaar te verbinden, krijgt het programma meer diepgang. Ik ben benieuwd naar wat dat gaat toevoegen aan de performance met beeldend kunstenaar en muzikante Klaske Oenema en multi-instrumentalist Jan Klug. Naar welk ander programma kijk je uit tijdens het festival? Ik kijk uit naar het programma Feminist Futures omdat ik erg nieuwsgierig ben naar hoe het feminisme in verschillende landen en generaties wordt ervaren, maar ook omdat ik programmamaakster Lisanne Snelders erg hoog heb zitten. Bovendien ben ik benieuwd naar wat dichteres Mia You over het feminisme heeft te vertellen, zeker na het lezen van haar bundel I, too, dislike it. Tsead Bruinja is redacteur van Read My World
