BLACK Welkom op de vijfde editie van Read My World, het festival dat schrijvers, dichters en denkers presenteert uit regio’s die doorgaans buiten het blikveld van het westerse (grootstedelijk) publiek vallen. Zo’n regio zijn de Verenigde Staten natuurlijk niet. Sterker nog, de invloed van dit machtige en invloedrijke land valt ook in Nederland op bewust en onbewust niveau niet te onderschatten. Maar hoe zit het met Black USA? We kennen de iconen en de muziek, de activisten, literaire grootheden als James Baldwin en Maya Angelou. De spoken-word scene in Nederland is mede gevormd door invloeden uit de VS. Maar kennen we de zwarte stemmen van nu? Het programma dat hier voor je ligt is het resultaat van een voortdurend trans-Atlantisch gesprek tussen de twee curatoren, Shantrelle P. Lewis en Maurice Carlos Ruffin, en de Nederlandse redactie. Beide curatoren zijn geworteld in New Orleans: over deze stad alleen al zijn boeken volgeschreven en ze speelt een hoofdrol in eindeloos veel songs, vormt het decor van vele films.

Veel schrijvers dit jaar komen uit New Orleans, maar ook uit Memphis, New York en Philadelphia. Het palet waaruit gekozen moest worden was dit jaar bijzonder breed: Black USA is immers groot, divers en wijdverspreid. Tijdens het festival gaan we in op de ongemakkelijke gedeelde thema’s zoals racisme en de erfenis van een koloniaal verleden, maar ook is er ruimte voor de vele manifestaties van Black Joy, de rijke verworvenheden van het Afrofuturisme en de oorsprong van hiphop. In de Cornbread Library worden belangwekkende boeken door liefhebbende kenners besproken en bezongen. En in de tuin van de Amsterdamse Tolhuistuin kun je je laten vervoeren door de verhalen en muzikaliteit van Nederlandse en Amerikaanse verhalenvertellers en spoken-word artiesten. Read My World nodigt je uit om samen met Nederlandse en zwarte Amerikaanse stemmen vanuit de poëzie, de literatuur, beeldende kunst en performance te kijken naar onze samenleving, naar zwart Amerika: naar elkaar. E H T S I BLACK CK A L B W E N I can’t say that I necessarily coined this phrase. However, I can admit that I’ve used it forever. Ever since I was aware that ‘Black was the thing to be’ (shout-out to ’Pac!). Despite having traveled back and forth for the past several years to the Netherlands, in exploration of what Blackness means here, outside of a U.S. American context, I was initially reluctant to say yes to this call to co-curate this year’s Read My World Festival. That hesitation had more to do with the fact that I’m hyper aware of the dominant narratives of whose Black is and whose Black ain’t. But then I remembered, that as a daughter of New Orleans, whose world view has been shaped by institutions such as Howard University and the diversity of Blackness that exists within the borders of the huge empire that is the United States of America, I knew I had to do this. Blackness nowhere is a monolith. We are as diverse in the U.S. as you are here, in the Netherlands. Our identities are similar and familiar yet nuanced and complicated. It is my hope, that with this very small microcosm of some of the boldest voices in our generation you are duly engaged and reminded of how much there is for us to learn about each other, in our journey towards liberation for people of African descent everywhere! HISTO R & CRE IANS ATORS African-American poets, writers, and intellectuals have always been the observers, conscience, and truth-tellers of the United States. America, like all nations, has its national myths. By their nature, myths gloss over the past, obscure the present, and distort the future. The Black USA poets and writers fall into two categories: present-day historians and countermythologists. The present-day historians know what America is and what it does. They walk the streets of New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Memphis, New Jersey, and elsewhere. They collect the truths behind the myths. They bring those truths to light. The counter-mythologists dismantle the often corrosive narratives put forth by the awesomely powerful American mythmaking machine, a machine that broadcasts antiblackness to the world. These writers find what is unique and magnificent in the African-American experience. They process and amplify those experiences so that others can learn and live. But let’s not rely too much on categories. In reality, all of the intellectuals you will meet are both historians and the creators of new stories. They will provide you a window on the fire raging in ‘the city on the hill’ and, perhaps, inspire methods of resistance.

Maurice Carlos Ruffin The many-sided Maurice Carlos Ruffin was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a writer of essays and short stories, for which he won the Iowa Review Fiction Award. In 2013 he earned an MFA from the University of New Orleans’ Creative Writing Workshop. Aside from being a writer, Maurice is a performer, interviewer, panel moderator, and literary curator. His novel We Cast A Shadow will be released early 2019.

Shantrelle P. Lewis World-traveler Shantrelle P. Lewis is a writer, historian and documentarymaker from New Orleans. She writes for publications such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. Lewis is currently directing and producing The Black Dutchman, a documentary about the Dutch blackface tradition of Zwarte Piet and Black identity in the Netherlands. Her book Dandy Lion was published in May 2017.

Kleaver Cruz Kleaver Cruz lives and works in New York. He is one half of the poetic duo The Delta, with which he performs in places such as The Nuyorican Poet’s CafÊ and the Bowery Poetry Club. Cruz is the founder of The Black Joy Project, a digital and analogue movement that positions Black joy as a form of resistance.

Raciale politiek wordt altijd pijnlijk zichtbaar in de nasleep van rampen. Rickey Laurentiis en Maurice Ruffin komen beiden uit New Orleans. Zij zagen de stad veranderen na orkaan Katrina. Auteur Murat Isik groeide op in de Amsterdamse Bijlmer en was ooggetuige van de vliegramp, die deze maand 25 jaar geleden een diepe wond sloeg in de wijk. Gikkels is een rapper met een grote passie voor de Bijlmer, waar hij opgroeide. We staan stil bij deze tragedies, die de zwarte gemeenschappen onevenredig zwaar troffen.
The Racial Politics of Disaster: Katrina and the Bijlmerramp Racial politics always become painfully visible in the aftermath of disasters. Rickey Laurentiis and Maurice Ruffin are both from New Orleans. They saw the city change after Hurricane Katrina. Author Murat Isik grew up in the Amsterdam Bijlmer and witnessed the plane crash that devastated the neighborhood 25 years ago. Gikkels is a rapper with a passion for the Bijlmer, where he grew up. We reflect on these tragedies, which impacted Black communities disproportionately.

De radioshow Filthy Mouth, Dirty Politics neemt je mee langs en over de grenzen van de sociale taalregels, met vulgaire taal en radicaal feminisme, zowel digitaal als analoog. Een verkennend experiment met de taal van de machteloosheid, die vooral aan minderheden wordt opgelegd. De liveshow is een ode aan ‘Hardcore Honey: bell hooks Goes on the Down Low with Lil’ Kim’. Een gesprek tussen de wetenschapper bell hooks en rapper Lil’ Kim, gepubliceerd in Paper Magazine, net nadat Lil’ Kims album Hardcore in 1997 uitkwam. Samen met dichters, muzikanten, artiesten en het publiek spreken we over onze feministische houding in relatie tot hiphop, de taal en de gemeenschappen waaruit ze voortkomt.
Radical feminism The radio show Filthy Mouth, Dirty Politics experiments with transgressive speech acts, filthy, vulgar language, radical feminism and digital and sonic (non) spaces – unapologetically demanding center stage for the outspoken self-representation of minoritized identities. The live radio show is an ode to ‘Hardcore Honey: bell hooks Goes on the Down Low with Lil’ Kim’ – a conversation between scholar bell hooks and rapper Lil’ Kim published in Paper Magazine shortly after the release of Lil’ Kim’s album Hardcore in 1997. Together with poets, musicians, artists and audience, we assert and transmit our feminist relationships to hip-hop, transgressive languages and the communities they emerged from.

Notions of intimacy and identity During this live performance of an epistolary correspondence, an American and a Dutch writer investigate images surrounding intimacy and identity with regards to the position of the Black author in the Western literary canon. They explore these concepts from their own background, in an attempt to understand and inform each other.

Het vrolijke weerwoord Het leven van zwarte Amerikanen is door president Trump als ‘hels’ voorgesteld. Om dat eenzijdige beeld te bestrijden zoeken schrijvers en kunstenaars naar manieren om een alternatief verhaal te vertellen. Een vrolijk verhaal. Kleaver Cruz en Shantrelle P. Lewis geven beiden een optimistisch weerwoord. Zij deconstrueren het heersende beeld van Afro-Amerikanen evenals van de Afrikaanse diaspora buiten de Verenigde Staten. We sluiten dit programma af met een spectaculaire fashion dance battle van fashioncollectief MAFB.
The cheerful retort The lives of Black Americans have been depicted by president Trump as ‘hellish’. To combat this one-sided image, writers and artists search for ways to tell an alternative story. Music as empowerment Black American music continues to be an endless source of inspiration, comfort, resistance and empowerment.
