Gail O’Kane Interim President

Gail O’Kane was appointed Interim President of Rochester Community and Technical College by the MnSCU Board of Trustees in March. Her one-year appointment was effective July 1, 2013.

Prior to RCTC, Gail served as associate vice president for strategy, planning, and accountability at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. She also served in the MnSCU system office as the senior leader for educationindustry partnerships for STEM and bioscience education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a doctorate in neuroscience.

N O I T C AQIP A TS C E J O R P FIRST YEAR EXCELLENCE Develop, pilot and fully implement a First-Year Experience course for an appropriate cohort of incoming students. The College will track First-Year Experience cohort students through the following term, comparing their success (retention rates and grade point averages) to non-cohort freshman students. Our focus will be to determine the impact on student success based upon differing student demographic variables and other characteristics.

STRENGTHENING THE CAPABILITY OF THE WORKFORCE The goal of this project is to reinforce the achievement of action plans through a focus on strengthening the capacity of the workforce. The College’s Strategic Planning and Integrated Planning Processes have created an infrastructure aligning College goals with divisional and departmental strategies, measures and resources. The 2009 Minnesota Quality Feedback Report reinforced the need to integrate this with individual performance management systems.

This feedback, along with our recognition of the strategic significance of strengthening workforce capability is critical to advancing and sustaining the College. Therefore, this project will prioritize the following components as necessary in achieving the goal: 1.

The project scope includes process management, use of data, training and development, best practice identification, continuous improvement, celebration and recognition of accomplishments. Initial actions will include defining and developing an appreciative advising model, a project schedule with timelines, actions, responsibilities and measures.

RCTC will launch its new athletics site in time for the 2013 season.

Bill Quistorff was named the interim Head Football Coach for the 2013 season, replacing Derrick Hintz.

The Yellowjacket football team was ranked in the NJCAA’s Top 20 poll and played in the MCAC state championship.

Cyndi Raymond was named the Head Softball Coach, replacing interim coach Kacey Moline.

Men’s basketball Coach Brian LaPlante hit a career milestone of 300 wins in January. He is the third RCTC coach since 1921 to achieve the 300-win milestone for sports that have at least 20 games per season, joining Jean Marconett and Jean Musgjerd.

The RCTC Wrestling Team competed in the NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, placing third among D-III non-scholarship schools and produced two All-Americans. Garret Miller placed third at 174 pounds and Joe Bunne placed fourth at 197 pounds. The team also won the Academic Award for having the highest team GPA among all NJCAA wrestling programs.

The Disc Golf Club participated for the first time in the Iowa Collegiate Disc Golf Championship, a regional qualifying event for the national Collegiate Disc Golf Championships.

RCTC co-hosted, with the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission, the 2013 NJCAA Division III Women’s National Basketball Tournament.

NJCAA winners of 2012-13 Academic Awards were Bobbi Schuttemeier - Women’s Basketball; Zachary Curry and Clayton Olson – Wrestling; Caitlin Jajoie – Soccer; Cody Lodermeier - Men’s Basketball; Robby Mackesey – Football; and Taige Thoreson – Soccer.

Football player Caleb Leichtnam was once again named an AllAmerican, making him the 22nd Yellowjacket to become a two-time All-American.

Campus Development

Several projects took place over the year to replace and enhance the campus, including electrical service replacement, concrete work, and carpet replacement.

The co-located WorkForce Center groundbreaking took place in September and construction started summer 2013. It should be ready for occupancy by fall 2014.

RCTC was a joint recipient of a mini-grant from the Diversity and Equity Division of the system office, to provide faculty and staff diversity training.

A capital bonding request through MnSCU will fund three Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement projects: ventilation air duct and exterior window replacement in East Hall; roof replacement in Endicott Hall; and exterior envelope tuck pointing and repairs campus-wide.

RCTC Facilities, Environmental Science Program, Horticulture Program, and the City of Rochester Park and Recreation Forestry Division planted trees on campus in May to work toward Tree Campus USA recognition.

Events

The Vice President and Ambassador from South Sudan came to RCTC in October to share their experiences of society building and work with tribal leaders in the new country.

RCTC Theatre productions, directed by Jerry Casper, included “Jabberwocky,” written by Jerry, and “Dilemmas with Dinner.”

The fourth annual Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Military Family Halloween Party took place on campus in October and included student participants from the Horticulture Club, Child Development, Dental Hygiene, Nursing Forum, Speech, and Yellowjacket football players.

Learning is ForEver (LIFE) celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.

RCTC celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Horticulture program, and the 10th anniversary of the Horticulture greenhouse in September, with a program and picnic in the SMART gardens.

Goddard Library was host to many authors. Mystery author Julie Kramer visited campus in September. Shawn Lawrence Otto, author of “Fool Me Twice: Fighting the Assault on Science in America,” was here in February. Minnesota poet Su Smallen spoke in April for National Poetry Month.

More than 80 health information professionals attended the Southeast Minnesota Health Information Management Association Fall Conference, hosted by RCTC and coordinated by Judy Young.

Musical concerts kept RCTC’s toes tapping through the year, with performances by the Electronic Music students, World Drum Ensemble, Jazz Band, Aires show choir, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Med City Jazz Collective, and solo and small ensemble performances.

The UCR Art Gallery hosted faculty exhibits, including Simon Huelsbeck’s “Point of Roughness” and “Catalyst” by Daniel Vedamuthu. In March and April, the Student Art Exhibition was on display with the 2013 Portfolio Exhibition “Twenty Four” following.

In January, RCTC co-sponsored the event Shamere and Stacy to highlight the fight against human trafficking.

Dr. Ibram Rogers presented “The Obama Effect: Beyond Trayvon Martin – Where Do We Go From Here?” in February.

“Fusion of Cultures: Traveling Asia” show took place in March, followed by “Karate Chops, Geishas, Nerds, & the Asian Invasion: Reflections of a Corean Adopted American” by Dr. John D. Palmer as part of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

Guitarist Billy McLaughlin played at Hill Theatre in April, also sharing his inspirational story.

T C E P EX & Y T I QUAL TION A V O N IN The Quality Matters Seal of Excellence was awarded to Chris Bushaw, Tara Hammill, Mary Juenemann, and Mark Stanchfield. These faculty are now recognized statewide and nationally.

Dr. Ginny Boyum, Academic Dean, was selected to attend the Instructional Technology Council Leadership Academy in Minneapolis.

The faculty and staff of both the Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing Programs were notified that the Board of Commissioners of the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission granted both programs continuing accreditation until 2020, the maximum length of reaccreditation allowed.

Four hundred students enrolled for Post-Secondary Enrollment Option and the largest contingent of those students came from home-schooled environments. A new provision allows 10th grade students who meet guidelines to enroll in the program.

IBM awarded RCTC a $10,000 cash grant to support STEM programs, funding both math and science initiatives.

RCTC was one of two schools to successfully complete the Higher Learning Commission AQIP Baldrige-based pilot and participated in a panel presentation at the 2013 HLC Conference in Chicago.

The Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs had successful national accreditation visits.

EMS, a new classroom and event management system spearheaded

by MnSCU, was implemented to access event and room scheduling information in a user-friendly format.

Michelle Pyfferoen and Ginny Boyum were both permanently appointed Academic Deans at RCTC.

Heather Sklenicka, Chemistry, published a book entitled “Basic Organic Chemistry for Allied Health Students.”

Joe Garness, worker in the College Center cafeteria, received the Ability Building Center’s Lowry and WOW Award recognizing outstanding workers at the 2012 Ability Building Center Employee Recognition Banquet.

Foundation Executive Director Lisa Baldus was featured in August’s “Rochester Magazine” in an article titled “Careers in Caring.”

The September issue of “Rochester Magazine” featured an in-depth interview with Don Supalla before his retirement.

Crist Dahl, Art + Design, had new works in the RAC2 exhibition at the Rochester Art Gallery in September.

Teresa Brown, Chemistry, was inducted into the Byron High School Athletic Hall of Fame in September.

Don Supalla was awarded the Lamp of Knowledge Award by the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce during their Annual Member Celebration Dinner in October.

Ainoha Urkijo, music department, performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Jerry Casper, Theatre, played leading man Max Biahlystock in the Rochester Civic Theatre production of “The Producers.”

Director of Nursing Merry Beth Gay was selected for LEAD and will study for a year under the direction of National League for Nursing CEO Dr. Beverly Malone.

Mike Mutschelknaus, English, and Taresa Tweeten, Speech, were selected as this year’s recipients of the Outstanding Educator award.

Jennifer Schnaedter and Cory Rubin were selected as part-time faculty of the Year.

The RCTC Yellowjacket Youth Football Camp took place in July with 70 youth learning football techniques from staff as well as Yellowjacket Football players.

RCTC partnered with KAAL and the League of Women Voters to host “The City Sales Tax Debate” in Hill Theatre to hear pros and cons regarding the Rochester sales tax extension.

RCTC Horticulture instructor Doug Courneya and students from the Horticulture Technology program volunteered their time to assist with a project to plant 100 large shade trees at Essex Park and in the campus nursery site at UCR. Vice President Jim Gross was appointed to the Rochester Public Schools Measurement Team, which develops the tools to monitor and measure the impact of the school district’s strategic plan implementation.

In October, nearly 30 RCTC Yellowjacket Football players participated in the International Walk to School Day at four different Rochester Public Elementary Schools.

RCTC honored the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission and the Post-Bulletin Co. with Partnership Awards, which recognizes individuals and organization that have ensured student success.

More than 2,300 middle school students from throughout southeastern Minnesota attended the annual STEM Summit at the UCR Sports Center in November.

“The Next Step Fair,” which connects families who have children on an IEP or 540 plan to local resources, was held in Heintz Center Commons with Jamie Johnson and Vicky Keller representing RCTC. Five students were recognized at this year’s 13th Annual RCTC Foundation Beat the Odds program: Caroline Adams, Mitch Ristau, Maurice Cain, Candace Gould, and Sim Youk.

The Minnesota State College Student Association awarded the Student Senate the 2012 Voter Cup for registering the most students to vote for the 2012 election.

The Mayor’s Medal of Honor Youth Community Award was given out to Zeinab Abdelhai, a participant in the RCTC Upward Bound Program.

Dani Jordan, RCTC student and artist, was awarded the McKnight Emerging Artist grant by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, Inc. to create the “1915” mural that was installed in the Atrium in January.

The RCTC Dean’s List included 1,178 students for Fall Semester 2012, and 1,080 students made the list for Spring Semester 2013.

RCTC student Ashley Jagodzinski’s Make-A-Wish visit with the Green Bay Packers was featured in the Post Bulletin.

Betty Truitt won the “Hometown Hero” award for her work in organizing the Lion’s Club Food Shelf on campus.

Chelsea Yock and Kate Springer of the RCTC Hunt Seat Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team competed in the Regional Championships held in River-Falls, Wisconsin. Chelsea won third place and Kate won fifth place.

The Student Senate participated in the MSCSA’s Washington DC Leadership Summit in March, meeting with Congressman Tim Walz, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and other federal organizations.

Congratulations to the following individuals/programs for being a recipient of a Minnesota Campus Compact Presidents’ Award in 2013: Don Baldus for the Steward Award, the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce Workforce 2020 for the Community Award, and Phi Theta Kappa for the Student Award.

The Rochester-Olmsted Youth Commission presented its annual Outstanding Youth Awards, which included three students with ties to RCTC: Logan Bush will be attending RCTC fall 2013; Brittany Terrell is enrolled in PSEOP classes; and Cadie Engleking is a current student.

Rashmi Roy, English, was the KTTC AmaZing Woman in March.

Suzanne Szucs, Art + Design, presented at the Society for Photographic Education Midwest conference in Cincinnati Ohio in October on “Pedagogy Now! Teaching Teachers to Teach.”

Mary Olson, Medical Transcription, was recognized by Minnesota Business Educators, Inc. with the organization’s Outstanding Educator Award.

Math instructors Dave Atwood and Sarah Endel presented a program on RCTC’s developmental math pilot project at the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics in Boston in March.

Michon Rogers, adjunct faculty member, was recognized by the United Way of Olmsted County’s Women’s Leadership Council with a Maude Finch Award.

Adjunct biology instructor Steven Vogel was one of the winners of a poetry competition with his poem “Spring Below,” which was published in the Post Bulletin.

Kevin Dobbe, Music-Digital Arts, premiered his piece entitled “Color and Light” at the Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall.

Adjunct nursing instructor Patti Engstrom’s article “Cultural Competence Training for Clinical Staff: Measuring the Effect of a One-Hour Class on Cultural Competence,” was accepted by the “Journal of Transcultural Nursing.”

Don Baldus, Math, was awarded the Presidents’ Civic Engagement Steward Award for organizing an Appalachia Service Learning project in Kentucky where the students provided basic home repair in one of the poorest rural communities.

Mary Juenemann, Health Information Technology, earned the title of QM Peer Reviewer.

David Varela, Phi Theta Kappa President, accepted the Minnesota Campus Compact Presidents’ Student Leadership Award on behalf of the PTK members for their ongoing collaboration across campus to promote student engagement, awareness of service opportunities and their 4C Community College Completion Challenge initiative on Student Success Day. RCTC’s Phi Theta Kappa Omicron Chapter was recognized as a “4 Star Chapter” by the two-year college international honor society.

The RCTC Student Body elected Cody Pogalz as the new Student President for the 2013-2014 academic term.

Alison Seemann gave an oral presentation of her research entitled “Development of a Research-Like Experience for Allied Health Biochemistry Students” at the MN Conference of Undergraduate Scholarly and Creative Activity in April.

89.3 % of RCTC’s Associate Degree Nursing students and 96.88% of Practical Nursing students passed the Minnesota Board of Nursing exam on their first attempt for 2011-12. 96% of all RCTC students who sat for the exam between January and March passed.

Meredith Jett received a full scholarship from the National Security Language Initiative to spend six weeks in Morocco to further improve her Arabic skills.

RCTC Graduation in May was a success with more than 385 students participating, including 167 High Honor graduates and 142 Honor graduates. Congratulations, graduates!

Faculty & Staff Accolades

Julie Christie and Pam Whitfield, Equine Science, participated in a Western Dressage Professionals Workshop in Northfield.

The Rochester Amateur Sports Commission gave Don Supalla the Amateur Sports Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual awards banquet.

The MnSCU system was recognized at the Desire2Learn Fusion 2012 conference in San Diego as the winner of the Impact Award.

RCTC has made gains in several staff development areas according to a survey, including 91% attending one or more development activities, 71% receiving a performance evaluation, and 61% discussing an individual development plan with their supervisors.

The RCTC Foundation received a gift of $50,000 from the Darlene Rucker Estate, which will be used to fund scholarships to nursing students. Rucker was a Rochester Junior College graduate in the mid 1950s and worked as a Mayo Clinic medical secretary.

Wilder Research estimated economic impact of RCTC on the regional economy to be $165 million, 2,047 jobs, and $10 million in state and local tax revenues. “Our operations and the economic activity generated by our faculty, staff, and students touch virtually every corner of our regional economy and support local business and industry,” said Don Supalla.

Governor Mark Dayton was at the Heintz Center Commons for a public Town Hall Meeting to weigh in on the state’s ongoing budget conversations.

According to the Governor’s Workforce Development Council, 85% of all new jobs created in Minnesota in the next decade and beyond will require at least some postsecondary education.

MnSCU’s tuition is frozen for two years as the final higher education bill included $78 million to offset tuition. The $102 million bill also included $17 million to retain quality staff and faculty and $7.3 million for a matching leveraged equipment initiative.

The Governor’s Workforce Development Council indicated two-thirds of Minnesota manufacturers list a “high-performance workforce” as the number one factor for success.

The Fine Arts Division hosted a Fine Arts Open House in April with 14 different workshops offered by Fine Arts faculty. More than 100 participants stopped by.

The RCTC English Department hosted its first Shakespeare Festival in April, celebrating the Bard’s 449th birthday.

The Foundation once again hosted the Scholarships Awards Ceremony in April, awarding more than $270,000 in scholarships to 235 incoming, returning, and graduating RCTC students.

Dr. Keith Swetz from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine spoke on “Balancing the Good of the Patient and the Good of Many: Medical, Ethical, and Financial Considerations,” referring to the RCTC Common Book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” by Rebecca Skloot.

Senator Al Franken was the keynote speaker for the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Military Sisterhood Luncheon in May, co-sponsored

by RCTC. The RCTC English Department hosted its first Regional English Conference in April, focusing on the topic of “Engaging Developmental Writers.”

The Nursing Forum sponsored Susanne Cutshall, who spoke about complementary and integrative therapies during Nurses’ Week in May. A Retirement Reception held in May recognized the 2012-13 retirees: Janalee Gilsrud, Raam Mohan, Diane Nicholls, and Don Supalla.

Don Supalla’s retirement from the Presidency of RCTC was celebrated on Friday, June 7, with a social gathering and fundraising event for the RCTC Foundation.

RCTC was recognized as a “Blue Level” Benefactors Circle contributor at the November Ability Building Center Benefactor’s Breakfast.

The RCTC Foundation hosted LUNCH AND LEARN sessions at Rochester high schools in January to provide tips about scholarships, financial aid, and maneuvering through the college process.

RCTC was recognized at this year’s Chinese New Year Celebration for its contribution to improving the education and maintaining the culture of the local Chinese community.

RCTC, the Post-Bulletin, DEED and Workforce Development, Inc. hosted a Job & Career Fair at the Heintz Center in April. More than 500 job seekers visited with 60 area vendors.

Representatives of the Rochester Chinese School hosted a special luncheon in honor of retiring President Don Supalla to express their appreciation for his support and encouragement over many years.

Quality & Innovation

The System Civil Rights onsite compliance review showed RCTC has many strengths, including its Early Alert program, diversity training, and publications.

The 2012 Survey of Entering Student Engagement indicated that RCTC did well in most of the six benchmarks, with the highest results in group projects, electronic communication, instructor feedback, and computer lab use.

RCTC was one of the college hosts for the 2013 MnSCU IT conference in Brainerd. The IT Award for Excellence was awarded to: John Putnam for the Mobile Learning Cart/iOS; and Darin Hoffman, Thomas Yung, and Jon Benson for the Student Alert System.

Two new programs were added in 2013: Welding, a certificate program designed to prepare students for careers in metal joining; and Administrative Clinic Assistant, a program created in collaboration with Mayo Clinic preparing students for positions such as Clinical Assistant or Patient Service Representative.

Men’s basketball players Joe Beck and Justyn Galloway were named to the MCAC Men’s Basketball All-MCAC Team.

Brian LaPlante was named Southern Division Coach of the Year.

The men’s basketball team was undefeated in conference play and earned a third place national ranking. After winning the Region XIII Championship, the Yellowjackets traveled to New York for the Division III National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament.

Men’s basketball center Joe Beck was named an All-American and was selected to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s All-Star Game in May in Las Vegas.

Jean Musgjerd received a service honor from the NJCAA for serving as the Region 13 Women’s Director for the past ten years.

Baseball coach Steve Hucke was named the Southern Division co-Coach of the Year.

Baseball players Matt Stubbs, Sean Hohmeister, and TJ Nowak were named to the MCAC All-Southern Division and All-MCAC Teams. Hohmeister was also named to the AllRegion XIII Team.

The baseball team finished the season 26-9 and was Co-Southern Division Champions.

Faculty & Staff Accolades

Don Supalla was recognized with the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award by Phi Theta Kappa International.

Rosemary Evers, Adjunct Instructor in Administrative Assistant/Customer Service, won the tall tales category of the Toastmasters competition in March and was featured in the Post Bulletin.

Mike Mutschelknaus‘ article “Using Rapport to Motivate Students in Online Composition Courses” was published in the 2013 edition of the Minnesota English Journal.

Ainhoa Urkijo, adjunct music instructor, played piano for the Rochester Music Guild recital.

Adjunct Reading instructor, Susan Trotter Heldt, authored the article “Book Groups,” which was published in the May/June 2013 issue of Bookmarks.

Music instructor, Carla Thelen Hanson, sang the part of Desdemona in Verdi’s “Otello” and also sang at the Soprano Soloist for Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis” at the Utah Festival Opera.

RCTC received results from its biennial “Knowledge and Awareness Study,” which surveyed 151 randomly selected adults aged 18-49 within a 30-mile radius of Rochester.

68% have seen or heard advertising or promotions for RCTC in the past 60 days via: word of mouth from family/friends, television, billboards, bus ads, radio, newspaper, mail, Internet/Web site, movie theatre and Facebook.
