ABOUT THE OAKS EVENT
This evening, we celebrate high school seniors and first year RCTC students who, despite challenges and obstacles, are achieving personal and academic success. Despite the odds, these unique individuals are pursuing their dream of higher education and a bright future. Tonight’s recipients were selected from applicants within Rochester and the surrounding communities. These students will be attending Rochester Community and Technical College this fall. This year, we are proud to award seven OAKS scholarships. Tonight is the 23rd year of celebrating success told through students’ stories of courage and inspiration. Thank you for your support as they pursue their goals. We have awarded more than $300,000 to 175 students. Additional proceeds from tonight’s event will fund next year’s scholarships and be used to grow the OAKS Endowment Fund so future recipients can make their dream of a college education come true.

WELCOME As the Chair of the OAKS (Overcoming Adversity Keeping Strong) event, I am honored to be part of a remarkable journey that celebrates the resilience of individuals who have triumphed over personal challenges. My own story of overcoming adversity has led me to this meaningful role, and I am committed to giving back to a process that played a pivotal role in shaping my career path. I first attended the OAKS event last year. I was instantly captivated by the powerful narratives shared by individuals who had conquered adversity on various fronts. Their stories resonated deeply with me, as I have personally experienced the transformative power of higher education. My own educational path was marked by the drive to overcome financial limitations. I started my academic journey at a two-year community college, driven by the need to find a cost-effective way to pursue higher education. From there, I transferred to a four-year institution, all while shouldering the burden of financial constraints. The desire to become an entrepreneur burned within me, but I knew that it would not be possible without the foundation of an affordable education.

Growing up where financial stability was a constant challenge, the memory of that struggle stayed with me, motivating me to make a difference for others facing similar obstacles. Becoming an entrepreneur was a testament to my determination and the opportunities that education and support can unlock. It also ignited my passion for giving back. When I witnessed the impact of the OAKS Event, I knew I wanted to contribute more than just financially. As the Chair, I am dedicated to creating an environment where the stories of triumph take center stage, inspiring others to overcome their own challenges. The OAKS Event is not just a gathering; it is a platform for transformation. It honors the indomitable spirit of those who have turned adversity into strength, and I am proud to be at the helm of this initiative. Together, we can amplify these stories of resilience, encourage others to embrace their struggles, and foster a community where support and empowerment thrive.
Alex Brainard OAKS Scholarship Chair
LYDIA THOMPSON At a young age Lydia suffered from anxiety and panic attacks. She was selectively mute between the ages of 6 through 9. She could communicate with family and a few friends, but in group environments like school she could barely speak. Lydia found it hard to connect well with her classmates at school. She felt less than because she was not being heard. Her silence shaped her childhood. It increased her ability to listen and has allowed her to be more empathetic toward others. After Lydia found her voice, she has used it to advocate for herself. Because Lydia performed well academically, she struggled to get additional learning supports. Lydia continued to speak up for herself and is in the process of getting diagnosed with dyslexia. The superficial read is that “She’s too smart to have a learning disability.” Because of this, Lydia wants to major in psychology, “to help those people who are often overlooked in our society.” Lydia’s family understands the importance of an education. As it turns out, multiple people in her immediate family are enrolled in higher education, including her mother. With limited family income, the OAKS scholarship makes it possible for Lydia to attend RCTC.
“Remember, we are all a work in progress, and the easiest and most effective change we can make is to start small and work our way up.”

RACHAL THORNTON Rachal’s father was a stay-at-home dad. They shared a close bond. When Rachal was five her father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The next year was challenging. Rachal’s grandparents stepped in to care for her while her mother worked long hours to provide for the family. Her mother was forced to file for bankruptcy. Rachal lost her father, and the family lost their home. Rachal began to experience anxiety. School and extracurricular activities became challenging. Small settings felt more secure. But she persisted and took comfort in art, listening to music, and working on computer projects. As a result, Rachal is in the Computer Science Transfer Pathway at RCTC and Winona State. Rachal realized she needed help outside of her family. She has been working with a therapist and encourages others to do the same. Rachal’s academic achievements are impressive. She is dedicated and a selfmotivator who goes out of her way to help others. The OAKS Scholarship recognizes this and supports Rachal as she continues to grow and pursue her education and career.
“I want to show my mom how much I appreciate all that she has done for me by doing my best in college. I want to continue my learning not only for her, but also for myself.”

JANELLE ASIEDU Janelle’s parents are from different backgrounds. While it is true that she was raised under two cultures, those cultural definitions are different than what you may think. One was the strict existence at home and the another, completely different, was the world outside of her house. At a young age, Janelle experienced social, emotional, and cognitive developmental challenges. There was domestic abuse causing emotional and physical harm, the impact of which resulted in self-harm. She worked through her challenges with the assistance of legal intervention, child protection services, and therapists. Janelle’s escape? Music, orchestra, church, and her youth group. At RCTC, Janelle wants to pursue psychology and musical theater. She wants to be a playwright where she can apply her education to not only understand her audience but also know how to influence them. Outside of theater, Janelle wants to use her experiences and empathy to help other immigrant families.

KEIRA PAPE Keira had reached one of her goals – she was a wife, a dedicated mother to two children, and a full-time homemaker. However, faced with a controlling spouse Keira made the difficult decision to leave her unhealthy marriage of 10 years. Seeking the guidance of a therapist, Keira was fortunate to find immediate support from her father. Keira also embarked on a journey with the Jeremiah Program, an organization committed to breaking the cycle of poverty for single mothers and their children, working toward a brighter future for two generations at once. Keira’s dedication and resilience have been recognized through the OAKS Scholarship, showcasing how students can triumph over adversity and serve as a shining example to their peers, families, and friends. Her nominator aptly described Keira as “resilient, tenacious, and full of grit.” Today, Keira is a dedicated single mother, juggling multiple jobs while pursuing her dream of becoming a social worker. What’s even more inspiring is her passion for the environment; she spends her summers volunteering for garbage cleanup and co-hosts the Rochester Free Nature School. In addition to all of this, Keira has ventured into entrepreneurship with her own children’s clothing line, which she sells at the Giftary in St. Charles.

TIANA ALEMAN Tiana’s start to life was challenging. She was born to teenage parents while her father was under arrest—and was deported shortly after her birth. Her mother and three younger siblings moved frequently. In those early years, she lost several close friends and family members, including her father to a drug overdose. As a result of her childhood trauma Tiana was forced to grow up quickly. Tiana has built a support network all around her, whether that be through therapy, family, the Rochester Alternative Learning Center, her three best friends, or her two cats and dog. Another component helping Tiana cope: music. Tiana has a long history with music, whether that be playing drums in the marching band, participating in concert band, or going to concerts with her friends. Tiana is pursuing Practical Nursing and would like to become a midwife or OBGYN with the goal of helping women bring their babies into the world healthy and happy. “I will continue to face my trauma and become the best version of myself one day at a time.”

MAKINLEE FORSELL Ideally, every child would have a safe, secure, and supportive upbringing to pave the way for healthy development. Sadly, not every child gets what they need. At the age of 6, Makinlee was sexually assaulted by a family friend. Her sense of safety was instantly destroyed. At the age of 10, Makinlee faced a severe medical condition and spent months enduring diagnostic testing and hospitalization. Add to that a parent with multiple and difficult relationships of their own. Those were the cards Makinlee was dealt.
“Makinlee is a survivor, a fighter, and does not give up.”--Rachel Bergman. Some people, under the conditions mentioned above, could give up. What is so impressive and stunning is that not only is Makinlee overcoming her adversity, but she is also helping others along the way. Most of the money Makinlee currently earns from her job goes back to support her family. A former three-sport athlete in high school, Makinlee quit sports to help take care of her niece. Unsurprisingly, Makinlee wants to go into the healthcare field to continue her unselfish acts and to make sure others feel as safe and cared for as the compassionate staff once cared for her.

ALEJANDRA HERMOSILLO AMEZCUA “Determination and grace, with a smile.” These were the resonant words chosen by Alejandra’s nominator to encapsulate her spirit. Alejandra embarked on her journey in the United States over 14 years ago, facing formidable challenges such as a language barrier and adapting to unfamiliar surroundings with limited family support. Alejandra’s early life was marked by hardship. Her father, afflicted by alcoholism and abusive tendencies, made her circumstances even more challenging. Faced with the daunting responsibility of raising two children while needing to work, Alejandra’s mother made the heart-wrenching decision to place her and her brother in an orphanage. Despite enduring multiple layers of trauma during her youth, Alejandra’s indomitable spirit never wavered, and she steadfastly pursued her dreams. Today, Alejandra stands proudly as a single mother of five children, having achieved numerous academic milestones and even obtaining her U.S. citizenship along the way. Undeterred by her past, she now passionately pursues a nursing degree, driven by the profound belief that her relentless effort will serve as a testament to her children.
