DEAR FRIENDS, Greetings from Rochester Community and Technical College! We extend our utmost appreciation for your continued commitment to RCTC and our students. The RCTC Foundation and its donors focus on five key areas: •

Scholarships — support to provide access to an affordable education

Student Support — support for basic student needs

Academic Quality — support to secure cutting-edge equipment and innovative grants

Championship Athletics — support to assist with costs associated with our nationally ranked athletic programs

Strategic Investments — support for other college and student needs to ensure success

Your generosity over the past year has significantly impacted our students while shaping an outstanding educational landscape. The collaborative efforts of faculty, staff, and the RCTC Foundation continue to drive our success, upholding RCTC’s mission of empowering students to thrive in an ever-changing, diverse society by providing access to exceptional education. CELEBRATING A LEGACY OF CHAMPIONS We are proud of the achievements of our RCTC Yellowjackets. In 2022-2023, we celebrated several of our teams competing at the national level. The Women’s Basketball Team won the NJCAA Division III National Tournament and the Yellowjacket Wrestling and Men’s Basketball Teams took second and third place, respectively, in their tournament play. These student-athletes are dedicated to their sport and must continue to meet high academic standards. Our athletes must manage time for practice, games, study – and many work to pay for college. Often people are unaware that colleges within the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) are not allowed to award scholarships for athletic performance or participation. When you invest in our Yellowjacket athletic programs, you help to remove barriers for participation in programs like the RCTC Softball and Baseball spring training trips. Your gifts enhance much-needed training equipment and programs. You help to support additional travel expenses to regular season and playoff games. Your support for our Yellowjackets encourages leadership, grit, and teamwork.

INVESTING IN ACADEMIC QUALITY RCTC is not only affordable – it offers an exceptional education to our students. Our state and federal funding model ensures we meet the core requirements that our students need to meet their goals, but we are grateful to those who invest in our College to enrich our student’s learning experience. Partnering with our community is essential to deliver a high-quality education. A Fund for Excellence can be established to support educational programs and is available to underwrite guest lectures, provide additional support for faculty innovation, involve students in off-campus learning opportunities, and purchase cutting-edge equipment.

MIRANDA THEATER FUND FOR EXCELLENCE A Rochester couple has donated $10,000 to support a Fund for Excellence to the RCTC Theater program. Their goal is to develop a love of theater and enhance the quality of theater in the Rochester area. These funds can be used for bringing in professional actors to conduct workshops, buying rights to programs or productions, running theater camps or workshops and developing new coursework that will expand class offerings.

COUPLE DONATES $90,000 TO CREATE MONTAG NURSING SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship honors Mildred Montag (pictured at right) whose work after WWII transformed nursing education by creating a program that could be taught in two-year colleges. The Mildred Montag Scholarship will provide scholarships during the 2023-2026 academic years for students enrolled in the Practical Nursing, LPN Mobility, and Registered Nursing programs. This gift is specifically intended to make college education more accessible and affordable for high-need students, especially those who have faced barriers to receive an education such as immigrants, refugees, and single parents. While choosing to remain anonymous, the donors have shared their reasons for making a gift. “We have both benefited from affordable higher education and are

grateful to have RCTC continue that important work.”

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP SHOWS COMMITMENT TO KAHLER HOSPITALITY EMPLOYEES The Javon & Vita Bea Family Foundation committed $100,000 to create two endowed scholarships at the RCTC Foundation to benefit Kahler Hospitality Group employees. This generous gift reflects the commitment of the Bea Family and the Kahler Hospitality Group to its employees, especially its union partner UNITE HERE: LOCAL 17.

“The Kahler Hospitality Group is committed to providing world-class care and hospitality to our guests. We rely on the professionalism and skill of our employees to deliver an unforgettable experience to our guests — that’s why we are proud to partner with Local 17.” - Javon D. Bea These endowed scholarships will benefit Kahler Hospitality Group employees and RCTC students for generations to come.

REMEMBERING RICK STELLING When Rick Stelling tragically passed away in 1993, his mother Ellen Stelling wished to remember Rick’s love of music at RCTC by creating the Rick Stelling Memorial Scholarship. On the 30th anniversary of his passing, friends and family members donated to his scholarship fund in honor of his love of music at RCTC.

KARSELL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Donated by Phillip and Catherine Karsell, the $8,000 scholarship will support an exceptional student who has a strong academic commitment but cannot afford to go to college without financial help. Philip and Catherine Karsell share, “We believe it is important to help qualified students achieve their

educational goals.”

Scholarships Change Lives...

ANGELA GONZALEZ OAKS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT/ WARREN SKAAREN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I strive to make a difference by helping others overcome the negative parts of their lives by sharing my story and becoming a psychologist. I feel as though that is my ultimate purpose in life, which is to help others and spread awareness about child abuse and mental health. I am just one step closer to this because of your help. Thank you again for this generous support.”

LAURA FIERRO-FERNANDEZ MILDRED MONTAG SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“No words can truly express my gratitude for your contribution to my dream and life-long goal. I will pay it forward with years of service by volunteering at the migrant clinic to support those without health insurance, assist non-English speakers, and provide education on preventable diseases. Someday, I would like to follow in your footsteps and establish a scholarship myself.”

ALUMNA HELPS FIRSTGENERATION STUDENTS As a first-generation college student from Bosnia, Almina Suljevic learned how to manage college life for herself: how to re-enroll, register for classes, apply for student loans and scholarships.

“Receiving a scholarship not only helped financially, but it also encouraged me while I was studying. It meant a lot to walk across that stage to receive the scholarships with my parents watching. It was a very special feeling, and I want to give that chance to other first-generation students.” “My acceptance to RCTC was a big deal to myself and my family. It was literally the stepping stone for my future. With scholarships starting at $500, you can make your own scholarship like I did, or make a donation to an existing scholarship fund.” Now Almina is working at Mayo Clinic in the Genomics and Genetics division of Laboratory Medicine. Almina wants to help make things easier for other first-generation college students and encourage them to make the most of their time at RCTC.

ARIANNA WEETS MILDRED MONTAG SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I have lived every day of this semester, and many of the days before it, with worries of how I will financially get through the months of hard study ahead. I can now move forward without worrying so much. I will pay this donation forward by continuing to excel in my academics, graduating from this program and being an incredible nurse and helping others however I can.”

LEAVING A LEGACY: GIVING JOY OF LEARNING TO STUDENTS WITH CHRONIC NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS Connie Rehm had a 40-year relationship with multiple sclerosis (MS). Living with MS didn’t stop her from finding joy in learning. As a student at RCTC she loved the opportunity to learn and cherished the friends she made on campus. Sadly, Connie passed away in 2017. Her former husband Bill Rehm, who passed away in 2021, chose to honor her by dedicating funds in his estate plan to establish a scholarship in Connie’s memory at RCTC. This scholarship is dedicated to students with MS or similar neurological conditions as encouragement to pursue their passion. Connie Rehm’s legacy lives on. In 2021-2022, Reghan Krause received the Connie Rehm scholarship which was renewed for an additional year. Reghan, like Connie, looks at the positive side of things, “[With

my condition] I had to give up some of the things I enjoyed; however, this helped me discover entirely new passions that I may not have otherwise experienced.”

CALE WEHRENBERG CHAMPA/KEREAKOS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I want to thank the donors as this scholarship will help me further my education and allow me to focus on my classes. This will force me to keep my G.P.A. up and encourage me to do my best in all of my classes. I will be paying this forward as I have made the decision to incorporate a scholarship fund in my will for either Southland or LeRoy-Ostrander schools.”

KELSEY PENDERGRASS SUCCESS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I am so grateful to be the recipient of the Success Scholarship. I have worked so hard, and to be rewarded for that hard work is validating and emboldening. It inspires me to reach higher, to try harder, to dare to dream bigger. Thank you for being the wind at my back. This isn’t just for me, it is for my child, and it is for all of the children I will impact as a teacher.”

Our students know that getting an education can be transformational — providing an opportunity for stable, rewarding careers that lift their families out of poverty. By supporting students’ basic needs while they are studying, we assist them in completing their education and gaining access to better employment. The HIVE Supply is RCTC’s on-campus food pantry. Currently enrolled RCTC students have access to the Hive Supply which is stocked with non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, and other items such as toilet paper, laundry soap, pans, and utensils.
