MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER & MINISTER FOR THE ARTS From 17 July to 2 August, all of Queensland will be a stage for the Queensland Music Festival (QMF), one of our state’s favourite and most ambitious events. QMF welcomes leading international and national artists alongside local talent in a robust program of concerts, performances and innovative musical experiences. We will see communities in Logan, Mount Isa, Townsville and Brisbane creating and presenting new works that weave together the stories of our state. The brand-new Mount Isa Symphony Orchestra will perform a world-first work of music that has been specially commissioned for the festival. Logan’s Under This Sky will feature more than 700 performers and potential audiences of more than 20,000 in what is the region’s largest-ever community engagement project. No other Australian festival matches the vision to create spectacular and memorable events in such a wide geographical expanse, while at the same time engaging communities on a vast scale and leaving a legacy for future generations. QMF encourages state-wide participation through a shared love of music and helps communities to come together through vibrant regional arts and culture. The Queensland Government supports QMF through Arts Queensland and is committed to attracting new and improved major events to Queensland. I invite Queenslanders throughout the state to join the fun as we celebrate Queensland Music Festival 2015. Annastacia Palaszczuk MP Premier and Minister for the Arts

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Between 2014 - 2018 Queensland will join the nation to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The Anzac Centenary also provides an opportunity to reflect on one hundred years of service and the sacrifices made. The Queensland Government has so far proudly supported over 150 Queensland projects and events as part of the Anzac Centenary – with plans to support many more in the future. One Hundred & One Years is an important element of the government’s commitment to commemorating the Anzac Centenary. I would like to express our appreciation to the Queensland Music Festival for its vision and commitment in playing an important role in the Anzac Centenary. These concerts will be a fitting tribute and an inspiring evening for us to honour the memory of our brave service men and women of the last one hundred and one years. Captain Andrew Craig RAN (Retd) Chair, Queensland Advisory Committee for the Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF TOWNSVILLE One Hundred and One Years is dedicated to our service men and women in this, the centenary year of the Anzac landing. More than 13,000 of our local men enlisted in the First World War and it is right that we honour and commemorate their sacrifice. Now home to Australia’s largest population of active defence personnel, few cities understand the life of a soldier quite like Townsville does. Appropriately, One Hundred and One Years is held at Jezzine Barracks – a site rich in military heritage and one of the most scenic locations in the city. Most exciting, some 30 of our talented local musicians and performers as well as the 1RAR Band will perform alongside the visiting musicians and artists in this moving and powerful tribute. This is a significant event for Townsville and Townsville City Council is proud to be associated with it. I look forward to the spectacle that is One Hundred and One Years. Jenny Hill Mayor of Townsville

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR When considering how QMF could pay tribute to our Anzacs, we decided to broaden the focus, to encompass all that has happened since the start of the Great War through to today. More than a century of men and women laying down their lives in the pursuit of peace is a difficult thing to commemorate meaningfully in one night but I believe that using music is the greatest way to do this. Inviting the world-renowned Saxon Wind Philharmonic from Germany, to play alongside our stellar Australian Army bands, is a symbolic and respectful way to celebrate the spirit of reconciliation and I have found it extremely moving as the various elements of this event have come together. Yes, this is a commemoration - but it is also a celebration and the music and words you hear tonight will give you an intimate sense of both - something that is truly a reflection of the Anzac spirit. James Morrison Artistic Director, Queensland Music Festival

MESSAGE FROM THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THE LORD MAYOR OF BRISBANE This year the Queensland Music Festival presents a world premiere series One Hundred and One Years in Brisbane and Townsville. This collaborative event showcases our tremendous local talent as well as the internationally renowned Saxon Wind Philharmonic as they visit Australia for the first time. The festival pays tribute to the spirit of the Anzacs with One Hundred and One Years to celebrate our servicemen and women who have selflessly answered the call of duty. Their memory is truly honoured through this series of inspiring concerts. It is with pleasure that I welcome the Queensland Music Festival to Brisbane’s Riverstage on 19 July, a wonderful backdrop to celebrate the peace we enjoy today. The Queensland Music Festival is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council, and the calibre of local and visiting talent are a testament to our dynamic and creative new world city. I am sure there will be something for everyone to enjoy as part of this year’s dynamic program. Graham Quirk Lord Mayor

Music has a way of tying itself to memories; some beautiful, others bittersweet, and some we’d rather forget altogether. There’s no quicker way to access the past than through music; this is one of its greatest powers. When we talk about the music of warfare, we talk of three distinct sounds: the songs that forged the front, the rhythmic explosions of artillery fire and the ballads performed back home. Music and War are strange bedfellows; both revealing something about the other. The narrative of WW1 is reflected in its music; bold songs of patriotism and adventure slowly gave way to heartbreaking hymns of longing and remembrance as the horrors of warfare revealed themselves as soldiers returned to Australian shores. Here, we have assembled an unlikely company of musicians; from Germany’s internationally renowned Saxon Wind Philharmonic to local Army and specially formed community bands. They are tied together with some powerhouse vocalists and a chorus of young protagonists. These artistic forces are not only rallied in the spirit of reconciliation and respect but also as a testament to the intergenerational power of music. Above and beyond, this is a work about legacy; what has been fought for, what has been lost, what can be salvaged, what must be celebrated and what we want to give to the future.
