Looking Back…
Well, thankfully, things sort of returned to “normal” this year for the Library & Library Staff: 1) Overall, it’s been a successful year. We were so happy to have the boys back and resume high levels of activity in the library on a daily basis. 2) We continued to act as substitutes for teachers & departments, often handling multiple classes per period throughout the days/weeks. We are team players! 3) Now to analyze some of the numbers:
A) Circulation numbers were way up this year from last year. Per grade, total circulations doubled (sometimes
quadrupling), from last year. This extreme increase is most likely due to the fact that many of our 9 th graders were at home and didn’t have any physical access to their middle school libraries during their 8 th grade year. They are back in school and want to read! B) Database usage saw similar results. Views and searches doubled and even tripled in almost all subject areas and platforms. For example, our Gale databases had an increase of near 200% from last year. (see slide #14) C) Ebook & audiobook usage was slightly down but LibGuide views and access increased.
4) National Library Week presenters and performances were a great success ! Lots of positive feedback and encouragement from the entire MSJ community 5) Quarterly Chess Tournaments, as well as informal pickup games, hosted in the library were well-attended and well-received. Good times had by all. 6) The fairly new “LibGuides” platform as a teaching and research tool has been popular and effective. Plans are to continue to aggressively implement in all future research instruction.
Looking Ahead:
General Library Goals for 2022-2023
Continue to enforce school-wide rules within the library (no phones, no food/drink, etc.) while fostering an atmosphere of quiet individual study as well as small group collaboration. Continue to host and promote Chess Club Tournaments. Investigate option of forming Teams to compete in regional tournaments. Explore idea of Reading Incentive events with author visits for students and their parents/guardians. Consider hosting book “festivals” in order to generate publicity and perhaps extra funding (grants, donations) for the school as a whole and the library in particular. Continue to advocate for library furniture replacement: 20+ years of wear & tear to chairs, tables, carpets, etc. ◦ i.e. Soft seating needs to be steam cleaned (non-removable cushions). Dingy! ◦ Over two-thirds of our hard wooden chairs are loose, wobbly and/or broken. Dangerous!
