FOREWORD

Hello, I am Andy Vastagh, president of the American Poster Institute and exhibitor at Flatstock Hamburg for the last eight years. Every year I am asked by our beloved colleague and FS Reeperbahn organizer Torsten Jahnke to say a few words to open up our program and I have gladly complied many a time, blathering about how much I love what we do and how great most of the attendees are but this time I think it is time for me / us to get some insight into what our steadfast host of the Spielbudenplatz has to say. So without any further ado, here we go. 1. Torsten, where do you think the gig poster community will be in five years? Will it be a whole new batch of young hungry artists serving a new field of musicians and events? Will any of us who have done it almost 10 years be around? Will anyone care? Ohh nice, you are playing the ball back to me…not that I have a print deadline to

meet, nooo, now I also have to come up with something insightful, thanks %&?§$! Okay then, let’s do this quick: Yes, we will have new young artists doing incredible stuff for new bands. It’s happening all the time. Check out the youngsters in this year’s line up f. e., great stuff! When I look at John Howard or Gary Houston, people, who are ten or more years my senior, and who are on top of their game, I hope, no, I know, that some of us old hands will stick around. Others grow out of it, do fine arts, toys or become accountants. Still gig posters seem to be a genre, where you can grow old in dignity ( Jeezz, did I really write this? Anyway, time is ticking, life time and deadline!!) And as for Flatstock Hamburg, wouldn’t it be great, if some of the cats from Switzer­ land would bother to show up and that one guy from Poland, you know, who I am talking about?! 2. What, for you, is the most exciting part of designing / creating a new gigposter? I guess, most of our colleagues would agree, it’s the moment, when everything falls into place: The idea for the poster is an interesting twist on some of the song lyrics,

the public image of the band or some funny thing a member said in an interview, the art/design/layout is as appealing as it is unusual and it’s way more than you thought it would be in the beginning. You want to look at it all the time up to the point where it becomes pathetic. Extra points if the band enjoys it as much as you do. 3. What is the most terrifying part of designing / creating a new gigposter? The dawning feeling that your design is not really capturing the vibe of the band. A feeling that turns into sad reality, when the management replies with the phrase we all love to hate, they aren’t really feeling it and if you maybe have another design. When the art direction of the band is too tight. After the tenth revision you’d be like »wait, I have a dayjob already«! But maybe the worst is, when you know, you have the absolute perfect poster design for a band (as Jay Ryan put it so beautiful­ ly in his poster for Flatstock 1 »This is the best poster ever made. It will solve all of the world’s problems and cannot be criticized!«), and the band can’t even be arsed to answer your initial mail. 4. Where is the strangest or most interesting place you have seen your or one of your colleague’s work? It’s not really strange, but it was unexpected: Sauve! It’s the quintessential smalltown in southern France. Okay, Robert Crumb lives there, but still, I didn’t expect to come across a great gallery cum shop for all things screen print / gig poster. Run by an expat from Berlin.

Also, I developed the unhealthy habit of scanning the indoor walls of every film or tv series I watch, looking out for works of our merry bunch. Sometimes I miss plot twists just because. It’s ridiculous . 5. What seasonal shrub will you be having in your cocktails this fall? Asking for Jessica. Hej Jessica! Rosemary! Pretty much every drink tastes better with rosemary! Although Flatstock has been an indispensible part of the Reeperbahn Festival since day one, and appears at the muddy banks of the river Elbe for the twelfth time this year, chances are, you do have some questions, or are new to Flatstock alltogether. So here are the FAQs. What is all this? Who are you people? This is called Flatstock. Flatstock 64, to be more precisely. It is a gig poster convention, the largest of its kind in Europe, presented by the American Poster Institute and Awesome Merchandise in conjunction with the Reeperbahn Festival and supported by Feinkunst Krüger (which basically means, Krüger sits around and drinks beer...). It features original graphic art by 33 of the most prominent poster artists working today. They represent a broad range of styles, regions and generations. Each studio is represented by the actual designers, illustrators and printers of the work on display. Grab the opportunity and buy a limited and authorized screen print of your favourite bands or have a chat with the artists.

The first Flatstock was held in San Francisco in 2002. In March 2003, Flatstock made its SXSW debut in Austin, Texas, and later that year Flatstock was a part of Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival. Since 2004 Flatstock has returned annually to both SXSW and Bumbershoot by popular demand. 2006 saw Flatstock expand to Chicago and Hamburg, Germany. Since 2011 Flatstock is a regular at the PrimaveraSound Festival in Barcelona, Spain. In 2016 Flatstock’s latest installment appeared at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC, USA. ln addition to the larger Flatstock poster shows, smaller regional exhibitions take place at events such as Le Guess Who? (Le Gig Poster?) in Utrecht, Screenadelica in Liverpool, or the Colored Gigs shows in Dresden and Berlin. Poster-O-Rama, a travelling road show featuring European gig poster art is the latest attempt to bring poster to the people™. What is a gig poster? You still can’t put your arms around an mp3! Or, how the fine folks from the UKPA put it: »A gig poster serves as a memento of a fan’s experience at a live gig in a way that cannot be downloaded or shared digitally.«

FAQs

Ever since the demise of the LP cover, these collector’s pieces – mostly screenprinted on heavy stock, for one concert or tour, limited and in small numbers – were more than happy to step in, so fans could have something to hold on to. Often based on song lyrics as inspiration, gig poster artists develop original graphic art that will party hard on your retina. Are these posters legit/legal? 100%. All the posters on display have either been commisioned or authorized by band/artist, management or venue. Then there are posters promoting Flat­stock itself. See Mara Piccione’s beauti­ful Flatstock poster on the opposite page f. e. Why is it that I see so many gig posters for (the) Melvins from different poster artist, but none for my new favorite band XY and the Zs? Some bands saw the potential of a limited screen print as a souvenir of a great live show earlier than others. Over the last twenty years, (the) Melvins probably had over 1.000 gig posters produced for them. Although the market for (the) Melvins posters is saturated apparently, you might ask, why are there still artists doing posters for them and not for my new favorite band? 1) (The) Melvins support the gig poster scene for a very long time know, so it’s a case of giving and taking. 2) It’s fun, as you have carte blanche

regarding the art. Some of the greatest, funniest and most insane gig posters have been made for this band. It’s as if each artist is trying to outdo the others, the weirder the better. Google for »melvins gig poster«, turn SafeSearch off and get ready to be blown away. 3) As for your new favorite band, maybe hardly anyone has ever heard of them?! Gig poster deals often include refinancing through poster after sales, so the artist has to keep an eye on the potential commercial value. No fans = no buyers. Capitalism 1.01. Of course we do posters for unknown bands, but I can tell that much: my landlord doesn’t accept »social media exposure« as rent anymore. Maybe your new favorite band didn’t understand gig posters and basically wanted a screen printed version of their album cover. Maybe they didn’t reach out and asked an artist. They should! Or maybe their music sucks. Then they shouldn’t! I ain’t gonna buy a poster because I don’t want to carry it all through the night! No worries! All artists will store bought posters until the end of the day or the end of the convention for no extra charge. How long are you open? Wednesday till Friday, 14:00 — 0:00 h, Saturday, 12:00 — 0:00 h. Or 365 / 24 / 7 on the artist’s websites!

Wasserbasierte Farbsysteme überzeugen durch hohe Verarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit, gute Druck­ eigenschaften und anwenderfreundliche Verar­ beitung. Unsere wasserbasierten Siebdruckfarben sind frei von aromatischen Lösemitteln, NMP, Cyclohexanon, Weichmachern und PVC. Aqua­Jet® FGL Aqua-Jet® FGL ist eine wasserbasierte seidenglänzende Siebdruckfarbe zum Bedrucken von Kunststoffen wie Hartund Weich-PVC, PVC-Selbstklebefolie und Polycarbonat. Ebenso können Papier und Kartonagen sowie Holz und Textilien bedruckt werden. Das wasserbasierte Farbsystem lässt sich leicht verarbeiten (siebdrucken, rollen, spritzen, streichen), ist auf vielen Bedruckstoffen einsetzbar und stellt somit eine gute Alternative zu konventionellen Lösemittelfarben dar. Hochwertige Farbsysteme wie Aqua-Jet® FGL zeigen gute mechanische und chemische Beständigkeit auf zahlreichen Materialien, sind tiefziehfähig und eignen sich für den Außeneinsatz. Durch Vernetzerzugabe kann die chemische Beständigkeit des Farbfilms weiter erhöht werden. Aqua­Jet® KF Aqua-Jet® KF ist eine wasserbasierte, glänzende Siebdruckfarbe für harte Bedruckstoffe wie Polystyrol, PMMA, Polycarbonat, Hart-PVC und vorbehandeltes Polyester. Aqua­Jet® WT Aqua-Jet® WT ist eine glänzende wasserbasierte Siebdruckfarbe für den Druck auf Holz und nach Vorversuchen auch auf verschiedenen Kunststoffen für Innenanwendungen. Das verarbeiterfreundliche und druckfertig eingestellte Farbsystem zeigt gute Druckeigenschaften und ist frei

von Verunreinigungen organischer Zinnverbindungen. Hauptanwendungsgebiet ist die Dekoration von Holzspielzeug. AquaCell® GL AquaCell® GL ist eine schnell trocknende, seidenglänzende, wasserbasierte Siebdruckfarbe zum Bedrucken von gestrichenen Papieren, Steinpapieren, Kartonagen und Holz. Mit AquaCell® GL dekorierte Poster und Plakate sind sowohl für den Einsatz im Innen- als auch kurzfristig für den Außenbereich geeignet. Das Farbsystem ist einfach zu verarbeiten, zeigt gute Sieboffenhaltung auch bei feinen Details. Die Drucke können bei niedriger Trocknertemperatur getrocknet werden und zeigen gute Blockfestigkeit. AquaTex C AquaTex C ist ein wasserbasiertes Farbsystem zum Bedrucken von Baumwoll-, Baumwollmisch- und Kunstfasergeweben (wie Polyester-, Polyamid-, Viskose-, Acetatgewebe). Drucke von AquaTex C fühlen sich weich und geschmeidig an, die Griffigkeit der Textilien wird praktisch nicht beeinflusst. AquaTex C kann mit Heißluft hitzefixiert oder durch Fixativzugabe bei Raumtemperatur kaltfixiert werden. Die Textilsiebdruckfarbe ist lösemittelfrei. Farbtonauswahl Das Pröll Farbmischsystem besteht aus verschiedenen Basistönen und einem Lack, mit denen sich Farbtöne aus den bekannten Farbmustersammlungen einfach nachstellen lassen. Eine Auswahl an Standardfarbtönen, transparenten und hoch deckenden Einstellungen, Rasterfarben, Tagesleuchtfarben sowie Metallic- und Effekt-Pigment-Farben steht zur Verfügung.
