DENNISJONES.COM.AU The Distributor for Independent Australian Publishers

MAY 2018

May 2018 Towards the back of 2017 I was invited to the SPN conference to talk about book distribution and what a book distributor does. So I thought I would outline what the last few days have been like for me. We started on Thursday night with the launch at Readings Hawthorn for two IFWG books, launched by Jack Dann. The books are Faerie Apocalypse by Jason Franks and Shadows on the Wall by Steven Paulsen. Why attend? Like most things in life if you don’t feel a compunction then don’t do it. In these cases it is my first hand need of genre writing and author where I feel I need more knowledge. The requirement of a business like ours is to understand the experience and then utilise the passion to go further. This publisher Gerry Huntman does a highly valued curated job of dealing with this genre or oeuvre. Testament to this is the generous amount of shortlisted titles in the recent Aurealis shortlist https://aurealisawards.org/ Friday we were visited by Louis deVries and Annna Blay of Hybrid Publishers to present their 2018 list. They announced they were celebrating 20 years in business that week and we happily have been their book trade distributors for most of that time. We congratulate Louis and Anna on this milestone. Friday afternoon was the continued updating and profiling of the Melbourne Books list for 2018 and into 2019. Saturday we celebrated Farrell's Bookshop's 40th Birthday party at their Mornington Bookshop. Two owners groups in 40 years and all of them are the sort of people you would never tire of knowing and trusting. It was at this event I renewed my acquaintance with Jack & Helen Halliday. In conversation I counted up that they are probably the most prolific bookshop brand makers that I can recall. They purchased Cosmos in St Kilda (later sold to Readings); opened the first Metropolis and also Antipodes in Sorrento. Helen was also a big contributor to the exceptional local history book – Acland Street. Back to Farrell’s; Roy Farrell worked at both Rigby Publisher and Nelson Publishers as well as at the Melbourne University Bookshop in years before. He also had his own publishing imprint "Loch Haven". Roy and Liz's son Andrew has been with us for the past 7 years and is a shareholder in this business. The current owners Ian & Meredith Horton took over some 20 years ago after they had their lovely Kew Bookshop – Pages.

Words from the Wise I am writing this from Meeniyan in Gippsland on an almost day off. We attended the Meeniyan Garlic Festival yesterday and renewed acquaintances with Penny Woodward whose book Garlic has been on our list via several reprints and now the need for one more reprint. Penny works tirelessly in the area of fresh food and Garlic. This year’s Garlic festival attracted about 10,000 visitors during the one day show. It is worth attending. I also met the author of the Gourmand award winning Garlic Feast – Janice Sutton; breathtaking book and hopefully we will have some good news from this author over the next 6 months. On Monday I pack my sample cases for the upcoming trip to Canberra carrying samples and sales sheets into the Canberra outlets and Tuesday was another book launch. I hope you like this month’s book selection; at this time the list is emerging from all the publishers for the rest of the year and people we are even yet to know. It is the nature of the business with drop-ins and deletions. I do know The Picnic at Hanging Rock 6 part TV series is to be shown on Foxtel on May 6th this year and then via the overseas partners Amazon Prime & Canal+ in France. We have the Secret of The Picnic at Hanging Rock in all versions and globally. I do await the sales results especially US for our print book, POD listing and eBook. Our ETT published title is small in extent (32 pages) – but I am sure we are going to have plenty of demand. On the road to recovery front it was good to see Phillip Adams back at work at the NGV after his very serious back surgery – keep well Phillip. Sales for January and February have been steady without being spectacular. Our reliance in these two months on back list and how it keeps on is still a miracle for us. Best wishes DJ

For many years IAD Press have very successfully used the imprint 'Jukurrpa Books' ‐ Jukurrpa is a Warlpiri word meaning 'Dreaming', Story' or 'Law'. The Institute for Aboriginal Development (IAD) is committed to the promotion of cultural authority and recognition, and as IAD and IAD Press are situated on the banks of the Todd River in the heart of Arrernte country, our Board and our Elders believe that appropriate recognition and deference be given to the people on whose land IAD stands on by changing the imprint to 'Angkitja Books' ‐ Angkitja is the Eastern, Central and Western Arrernte word for "keeping information safe for the future". In this age when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and culture are so much under threat, it is appropriate to name our publishing label after a word that means keeping safe ‐ keeping culture safe, keeping language safe. AVAILABLE NOW This book tells the true story of a couple who in 2010 set out on a long walk through Britain which led to a second unplanned internal journey. The physical walk took them from John O'Groats to Land's End, the two iconic end markers of the British mainland. Rather than follow the road, the author created a path designed to remain wherever possible in the countryside. They carried backpacks along a circuitous route that included some of the great British footpaths, the Great Glen Way, West Highland Way, Pennine Way, Offa's Dyke, South West Coast Path and myriad other often obscure rights of way. In all, the walk took 139 days and covered 1,740 miles (2,801kms), more than double the distance of the most direct route. By the time the author returned home he found his world had changed forever. The book is an inspiring account of what started out as a purely frivolous idea by an otherwise normal couple to wander and wonder across the land. By the end their adventure had become a far greater quest than they ever could have imagined. Written as a personal narrative based upon the extensive daily journal he kept, the book gives a sense of the immediacy of the conditions, history and people encountered, and the impact on the couple's relationship. The wonder they experienced in the natural environment and joy in exchanges with their fellow humans are described in sharp contrast to the extreme physical challenges that brought them both to breakdowns and a near death experience. On 5th November the walk ended, but when the couple returned home, the author found himself confronted by a different world. He had successfully negotiated all manner of physical, emotional and logistical challenges to reach Land's End, only to arrive back in Australia and find himself completely lost. While candidly sharing much of his personal story during the book, the author then reveals the stark sense of dislocation he felt on his return and the difficulties he had to negotiate to find a new life path that made sense. In time he realised the walk had revealed a deeper understanding of the Earth and his place within the web of life it supports. After a career spanning 25 years in global corporations as a finance director and CEO, the change was as confronting as it was illuminating. At times humorous, wistful and questioning, the book brings the British countryside to life and reflects on the history and personal endeavour of some of its people. It is an inspiring insight into human potential and has been written to have broad appeal.

In 1940, a seventeen year old girl Carys Harding Browne comes of age in Adelaide, Australia. At this time young clever men meet together at St, Mark's University College to share their love of poetry. By December 1940, St. Marks is leased to the Royal Australian Airforce as an embarkation depot. The Second World War is in earnest. This story is about young people growing up and falling in love against the backdrop of war where dances, friendship and the arts become a consolation in a fragile and uncertain time. It is, above all, the diary of a young girl finding herself amidst the impact of war. This is a literary time capsule, a fastidious, vivid and shameless record of two pivotal years in Adelaide's history. Carys was part of a fast set which drank sherry, danced until dawn, fell in and out of love, read the latest books, saw all the shows, frolicked in the parklands and loved to thrill‐seek. Some among this decadent generation were to become famous names. Pre‐war, theirs was an antipodean Scott Fitzgerald life; their wild joie de vivre being piqued as the young poets and promising university students signed up and left to fight, several soon to die. Carys was too unruly to be given her dream job as a journalist but, as this wonderful book reveals, she was a very gifted diarist. ‐ Samela Harris

This is a true story of greed, courage, exploration, murder, wasted efforts, life and death struggles, insubordination, incredible seamanship, and extraordinary bushmanship, amid government bungling and Aboriginal resistance, during South Australia's first attempt at colonising their Northern Territory in 1864. The South Australians wanted their state to be the premier state of Australia. The new settlement was expected to open up a trading route across the country to Asia and beyond, and exploit the agricultural and mining opportunities of the interior. It was to be at no cost to the state, as the land was sold, unseen and unsurveyed, to investors in Adelaide and London, prior to the First Northern Territory Expedition even setting out. The investors were already calculating their returns, but then, as the saying goes, the fight really started...

"A fantastic read: insightful, cohesive, sequential, and well‐paced. Loved it. Plenty of photos and maps to set the scene, with the addition of well researched complementary, first‐hand accounts and primary records. Pugh has captured the essence of the time, place and characters: their personalities, hardships, successes and celebrations. I wanted to read it to find out what was going to happen next. Pugh's writing style is 'alive' and easy to read." Jill Finch

AVAILABLE NOW Yvonne Nicolas - the 'Queen of Adelaide', her acquired 'title' while reigning over South Australia's fortunes - reveals for the first time what everyone wants to know... the true story on how Adelaide won and lost the Grand Prix... and the stories behind the stories that made front page 'News'. Stories from Adelaide... across the Nation... and the World Stage! "Making Sense of Life Before We L'Eve...Those Were The Days is a vehicle for a much higher purpose... a catalyst for universal change in the way we deal with mental health issues," says its author, Yvonne Nicolas. Yvonne is a firm believer in 'signs', 'dreams' and 'higher forces' that have guided her life and firmly believes that we need to shift the way in which we deal with health issues generally, but particularly in mental health. "It requires a collective and collaborative effort by many trained and volunteer workers across many sectors of the allied and medical health industries. It is what is referred to as a 'village approach'," she says. "We want to set up Sanctuaries where people of all ages, race and religion can go to receive the help they need; to be cared for in a gentle, loving environment... a place where they will feel safe and properly cared for regardless of their financial circumstances and not to be 'committed' into a mental institution." This is a shared vision that Yvonne has with many friends, colleagues, world healers and enlightened leaders. But we cannot effect change if we don't sell books. All the profits from the sale of Making Sense of Life Before We L'Eve... Those Were The Days will be channelled into the creation of these Sanctuaries.

AVAILABLE NOW Professor Dr Grafton Everest's latest outrageous entertainment takes us to London and New York after a series of hilarious meanderings in the land of Oz. So Far, So Good centres on our hapless professor's obsession with food and fame; his relationship with his increasingly independent wife Janet; their wayward (and soon to be married) daughter Lee‐Anne; and his much‐loved terrier Maddie. This cleverly plotted satire exposes the sad state of universities and of what now passes for politics in the West. Our obsession with technology, our fear of outsiders and our distrust of elites also come in for a pasting. Caught in a series of concentric conspiracies, Grafton manages to save the day, save the world and even launch Australia on the road to a republic. Well‐known author and commentator, Professor Ross Fitzgerald, and Antony Funnell, of ABC Radio National's "Future Tense" fame, have produced the funniest Grafton Everest novel yet. The previous Grafton adventure, Going Out Backwards, was shortlisted for the 2017 Russell Prize for Humour Writing. Author Information Ross Fitzgerald AM is the author of 40 books, including a memoir My Name Is Ross: An Alcoholic’s Journey; and the sexual/political satire Going Out Backwards: A Grafton Everest Adventure, which was shortlisted for the 2017 Russell Prize for Humour Writing. Antony Funnell is a Walkley Award-winning journalist, broadcaster, and author. He presents the weekly podcast/radio program "Future Tense" on ABC Radio National. Over the past few decades, he has worked for many of Australia’s leading news and current affairs programs, including "AM", "7.30 Report", and "Background Briefing". Antony is the author of the non-fiction work The Future and Related Nonsense.

He thought of himself as a tiny minnow in an extremely large ocean. But maybe, just maybe, that swish of the minnow's tail or the ripple of the swallow's flight feathers on t he waters of the Port had wafted a little essence of the Peninsula to the rest of the world. Life‐long friends, Jack, Harry and Peter, were born in 1933 and spent their early childhood on the Tasman Peninsula. They sought careers far from their homeland but, despite living far apart as adults and following their own guiding stars, they, like the swallows, returned time and again to their birthplace. Swallows Fly North is their story ‐ a tale of boys growing from romantic children to the realities of manhood during the years from 1940 to 1963; a tale of migration, regeneration and the protection of cultural heritage.

Author Information Al McKay was born in Koonya on the Tasman Peninsula during the Great Depression. The "hospital" boasted no reticulated water, no electricity, no council sewerage and no doctor. The farm from which his mother travelled by horse and sulky the night of his birth had been carved out of the forest in the boondocks of Tasmania. Thinking about how he had become "successful" after this beginning to his life, Al wove this tale around three boys all of whom, although fictitious, portrayed some of the stages and facets of his own career.

Faraway Places is a collection of three novellas that goes to dark and dingy places that the faint‐hearted might wish are truly faraway. But are they? Not when you take a crazed trip with an odd‐ball who dreams of a faraway place, while all the while he is on a slow‐burn to insanity. Maybe he can solve the problem of living in a caravan alongside a garbage tip with a foul‐mouthed significant other and a companion dog. That's not an easy problem to solve when you lack initiative. Perhaps the frozen wastelands of pre‐revolutionary Russia are a change of location, but still you'll find that it's that kind of faraway place where many bizarre things could be possible: dog‐headed people might exist, a nasty con‐man can become a tsar and, if you want to save your skin, there are people you should avoid. If that's not enough, then waiting to be solved is the provenance of two mysterious trunks and their contents in the basement of St Petersburg's Hermitage. Finally, a misconstruction about a killing on an isolated farm in a British colony in 1815 leads to disastrous consequences. Decent men can commit abominable acts and criminals can be decent. In this faraway place, it's brutal times all round ‐ brutal times for the original native inhabitants, for settlers and their women, and for the convicts and child convicts. A gripping read.

Author Information Albert Trajstman spent half a biblical lifespan working in science. He is the author of numerous publications that have appeared in learned scientific journals. Following a number of life‐changing events, he ceased exercising his brain’s left‐side to give its right side a go. He has directed his energy to writing poetry, performance poetry and prose.

AVAILABLE NOW A portrait‐painter discovers a terrifying side‐effect of his talent. A professor of medicine finds himself romantically involved with a dying patient. The lives of two young people are changed forever by a performance of the Mozart Requiem. A self‐styled Messiah tries desperately to persuade a writer that he alone can avert a catastrophe about to engulf the city. Serge Liberman's extraordinary characters rise up off the page like apparitions. Whether in chastened submission to their fates, or in blazing defiance, or in search of meaning and significance, these figures are denizens of real, intimately observed social worlds. Liberman's sinewy, intensely evocative and poignant style, unique in Australian letters, takes us deep into particular lives but always with reference to universal issues of fate, free will, and the moral landscapes of good and evil. His post‐Holocaust humanism is passionately committed to the power of storytelling, and enters with special power art's plea for love, compassion, inner freedom, and redemption. This collection of some of Liberman's finest and most characteristic stories draws upon all six of his published volumes of short fiction. It is offered not only as a summation and a tribute, but as a valuable contribution to the diverse field of Australian multicultural writing.

Author Information Born in Russia in 1942, Serge Liberman came to Australia in 1951, where he subsequently worked as a medical practitioner. As author of several short‐story collections including On Firmer Shores, A Universe of Clowns, The Life That I Have Led, and The Battered and the Redeemed, he three times received the Alan Marshall Award and was also a recipient of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award. In addition, he was compiler of A Bibliography of Australian Judaica. Liberman died in 2017.

This volume opens with a full‐length book of new poems by Petra White, A Hunger. Bound‐in with it are her two prior books, The Simplified World and The Incoming Tide. The new poems of A Hunger are as lucid as they are mysterious, crafted for the ear, and for an emotional tone that slips delicately between mischievous irony and a cut‐through bleakness or joy. A strong theme, in parts, is depression, where White presses beyond personal response into examining darkness itself, in a fierce art that deliberately gives and asks for no indulgence. The same goes for her love poems, in a sequence that plunges into the wild contradictions and poignancy of new love, with glances to Renaissance poets. Contemporary worlds ‐ people and place ‐ are foundation for this poetry, which is haunted by inscrutable time. Her well‐known 'Southbank' from her first book is given a further turn in a new sequence, 'The Sound of Work' ‐ this is one of the few contemporary poets to write convincingly of office work. In all, White's poems inhabit life's fragility with a light‐footed constancy. By adding her prior two books, the Press intends not only to keep them in print, but to lay out for readers the fullness of the growth of an oeuvre. The poet has taken the opportunity to make a handful of excisions and revisions. Author Information Petra White was born in Adelaide in 1975, and lives in Melbourne, where she works in a government department and is studying for a Master of Public Policy and Management. Her first book of poetry, The Incoming Tide, was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier’s Prize and the ACT Poetry Prize. The Simplified World was shortlisted for the 2011 Judith Wright Prize in the A.C.T Awards; and was shortlisted also for the John Bray Prize in the 2011 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. Her most recent book A Hunger, was published in August 2014. The Simplified World also shared the annual Grace Leven Prize for Poetry for 2010 with two other books, Patience, Mutiny by L K Holt and Phantom Limb by David Musgrave, all of them published by JLP. In the Prize’s distinguished sixty-four-year history, this is the first time that three books have been honoured together.

AVAILABLE NOW In his debut collection, What you might find, Richard Holt invites readers into corners that become dark, into places in which they do not belong and into moments that will change things utterly for his imperfect protagonists. Characters grapple with misunderstandings, the weight of pasts and the moments when fates change course. As a collection it provides points of light and darkness within an overarching narrative of human fallibility. Richard Holt's stories are truly addictive: perfectly formed, funny and tragic glimpses under the surface of life. ‐ TONI JORDAN, Our Tiny, Useless Hearts Author Information RICHARD HOLT is a writer and artist from Melbourne. He produces text-based videos, artworks and interactive textbased installations for public spaces, and was co-founder of Melbourne zine store, Sticky. Steven has been photographing Australia's wild landscapes for many years, concentrating mostly on capturing the essence of Australia's diversity in panoramic format. Steven holds a deep love for Australia's landscapes and unique ecosystems. The images contained on this site are just fleeting glimpses of scenes that have unveiled themselves to Steven at a moment in time. About Steven Nowakowski Propelled by a deep sense of connection to this country, Steven Nowakowski has managed to carve a path with large format photography, a career enabling him to remain in tune with where his heart lies. Steven's inspiration has long been drawn from true wilderness photographers, Tasmanians Peter Dombrovskis and Olegas Truchanas. Dombrovskis and Truchanas were men not only magnificently talented behind the lens but of whom also carried a quiet, yet incredibly powerful message behind their work. Similarly, their vision at the time was to utilise the printed image to highlight the immeasurable vulnerability of a region they loved dearly, places vastly unknown and unseen by most. Indeed it was the compelling Dombrovskis photograph of Rock Island Bend that touched the conscious mind of the country during the campaign to save Tasmania’s Franklin River in the early 80’s from being dammed. All of Steven Nowakowski’s large format photography remains the work of film; to him there is nothing quite the same. Not only does the understanding of such a camera slow one down and force you to fall in tune with your surroundings, but just as importantly it is the detail, sharpness and vibrancy of the finished product that is something still unachievable by the digital camera.

Steven hopes the viewer of these calendars can feel they can step into the scene and stir one's passion month after month with idyllic landscapes. Steven believes Australia is a most remarkable continent that deserves our respect and attention. Much has already been lost and if the images on these pages can inspire a care for our country then he has done his job.

How To Love The Sh*t Out Of Life is a self‐help guide to enjoying life and being positive. Author Sally‐Anne Hurley has written her first book with the objective to share her stories on how she has attempted to sustain a positive outlook on life with others. Hurley has taken anecdotes and tales from her life to provide examples of how she has practised the strategies she preaches in the book. Hurley also takes experiences from the people in her life to also showcase these positive strategies. She is not a professional life‐coach or in that field of work, but her experiences and observations of those around her, is what has inspired her need to share her positivity strategies and tips with others. Humour is another major aspect of the book, in particular, a self‐deprecating and often sarcastic view of Hurley's life and experiences are given to the reader to provide a sense of relatability. Aimed at readers between the ages of 18‐35, the book looks at different stages and aspects of enjoying life, but also covers some of the challenges humans face in order to do so.

Author Information Sally Anne Hurley is a Sydney‐based writer, with a background in Journalism and has worked professionally as a content editor for the last five years, mainly in online communications and has been published multiple times in a variety of outlets. She has specialised in the genres of self‐help, lifestyle, arts and culture and wrote this book because of the belief that she has a unique, positive outlook on life, one that she wants to help others who may be feeling down or struggling. Always having been passionate about writing since she was young and having also had what she believes has been a happy life so far. Believing it’s her calling to bring these two traits together, which is what has culminated in this book.

We have many life‐determining moments in our lives; moments when something happens, and we make decisions that determine the nature of our future life. Many of these moments are happy ones. We look forward to them, and we enjoy them. But many of our life‐determining moments are not happy and we struggle with these unwanted intrusions into our lives ‐ death is probably the most unwanted intrusion in our lives. We all struggle with these life‐ determining moments. The date when these moments occur will always remain significant to us. Our lives divide into two: before and after. In The Compassion of Memory P A McDermott explores the grief surrounding the untimely passing of a beloved family member and how grief continues for decades after the intial loss. Author Information Growing up in a family with four children P A McDermott loved reading books, school and the beach, even though asthma hindered these activities, and throughout her life she has kept journals. After the tragic passing of her younger brother Matthew in 1996 P A McDermott contracted rheumatoid arthritus (RA) which lead to her retirement in 2002 and move to Sydney to live with her mother. She kept in touch with her siblings and their families - she never had a family of her own however. When her mother passed in 2010 she started to research and write her first book called "Resurrection" as she needed to make sense of Matthew's death and the journey of grief. Working on the book in 2011 and on her birthday in 2013 her rheumatologist informed that the RA had gone into remission. After "Resurrection" was launched in July 2014, the rheumatologist asked if a book could be written about how dealing with the emotional trauma of Matthew’s death through writing had pushed the RA into remission. P A McDermott agreed and the second book is called "he Compassion of Memory".

Kaaron Warren's novel, The Grief Hole, is fast becoming a dark literary classic, and it was enhanced by internal illustrations and cover art/design by Canberra‐based artist, Keely Van Order. This art portfolio traces Keely's passage to the final illustrations and designs, including variations on themes, mood sketches, and pieces of art that were worthy of publishing, but just didn't quite make it the limited number required for the final product. Keely provides notes on her journey and includes excerpts from The Grief Hole that enables the viewer insight into the direct sources of inspiration for the art. Keely Van Order's art and design for The Grief Hole, compiled in this beautiful book, is an apt companion volume to the novel, and captures the spirit of Kaaron Warren's masterpiece as a stand alone work. Author Information Keely lives in Canberra, Australia where she completed her masters of visual art (digital media and illustration) at the Australian National University. Currently completing a third degree in Psychology, she teaches art and language courses locally while also working as a freelance graphic illustrator. She has exhibited and published various creative works in Canada and Australia after 10 years living abroad in Argentina, Peru, Chile and the USA. Keely is currently illustrating Kaaron Warren’s upcoming novel, The Grief Hole, as well as rendering the art and design for its cover. Following soon after, a collection of this artwork, combined with illustrations and mood work leading to final pieces, will be released in a special limited edition by IFWG Publishing (stay tuned). There are many grief holes. There's the grief hole you fall into when a loved one dies. There's another grief hole in all of us; small or large, it determines how much we want to live. And there are the places, the physical grief holes, which attract suicides to their centre. Sol Evictus, a powerful, charismatic singer, sends a young artist into The Grief Hole to capture the faces of the teenagers dying there. When she inevitably dies herself, her cousin Theresa resolves to stop this man so many love. Theresa sees ghosts; she knows how you'll die by the spirits haunting you. If you'll drown, she'll see drowned people. Most often she sees battered women, because she works to find emergency housing for abused women. She sees no ghosts around Sol Evictus but she doesn't let that stop her. Her passion to help, to be a saint, drives her to find a way to destroy him.

Charlotte Pudding, computer psychologist and recent orphan, is not precisely thrilled with her lot in life (and not just because of the 'orphan' bit). Nevertheless, having her routine disrupted by a shadowy corporation, a man who claims to be a retired god, and the secrets of her own family history isn't a walk in the park, either. Charlotte's quest for answers will lead her on a perilous journey into a religion based on quantum physics, a hunt for unexpectedly rare plant oil, and a fight to the shame against a black‐belt in sarcasm. In a world that runs on peace and harmony, Charlotte is about to discover just how far some people are prepared to go to maintain tranquillity.

All is not as it seems in the tranquil waters of the Aardvark Archipelago... After the death of his parents, Ascott Pudding ran away to the ends of the Earth ‐ that is, to the Aardvark Archipelago, which is basically the same thing. But these tropical waters hold more than just fish, and Ascott soon finds himself in the grip of an ancient mystery...and an extremely violent invertebrate. With the help of his best friend, Shoal, and an artistically temperamental parrot, Ascott will face down a homicidal octopus, an extreme whale‐ based sporting event, and several varieties of pirate. Above all, though, they must unravel the ancient mystery of a treasure beyond imagining: the Pisces of Fate. Contains a bonus short Drakeforth short story, Uncertainty of Goats. The Encyclopedia of AFL Coaches is the natural follow‐up to the enormously popular The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers. This new addition to the history of football's personnel details the careers of the men who have been senior club coaches over more than a century of VFL/AFL competition. This encyclopedia not only has statistical information on the games won, lost and drawn by individual coaches, but goes into detail about fascinating coaching careers, from Collingwood legend Jock McHale to the virtual unknowns who coached for just one or two games. For example, St Kilda's Bill 'Banjo' Paterson coached the Saints for just one game in 1938 when regular coach Ansell Clarke was unavailable. Paterson was handed the job just before the start of play and his normal role with the Saints? He was head trainer! This book details the appointments, the sackings, the unusual, the bizarre. As with The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers, no true football fan can afford to be without this book.

...Andrea's father has been killed crossing the road and her best friend dumps her shortly afterwards. Life is bleak, like the billowing furnaces and wild moors which flank the city, but fab new 60s music, pop groups and pirate radio make her want to burst out of the mire. For Andrea and her friends, England is changing and sexual and social boundaries are beginning to blur. She's going to handle the north midland gloom and her fog of misery her way. She'll get pop‐star Lennon look‐alike, Brendan James, and lose her virginity. But Andrea hasn't planned on being a fourteen‐year‐old expectant mum, or on a stepfather ‐ and the opportunities afforded by the move south to London, where life could be fun... Award winning author Pam Mariko takes the reader on a journey through the 'dark night of the soul' to hope, balance, and bright new beginnings.

Author Information Pam Mariko grew up near UK’s bleak Moors, where Red Moon: secrets of a sixties schoolgirl, is set. She’s a 2011 semi‐ finalist in Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel Award with this book (formerly Red Moon Rising), and gained five star reviews from Amazon panel editors and Publishers Weekly. In 2010 she won the Olvar Woods Fellowship Award, and in 2008 the Varuna Longlines. She majored in Creative Writing at Griffith University and USC. A former freelance travel and property writer, Pam now concentrates on novels. Besides this baby‐boomer/women’s fiction/young adult novel based on her life in the sixties, she also writes romance, other women’s fiction and non‐fiction.

Fox and Bear were true friends. They were close‐as‐can‐be friends, through and through friends... except for one thing. Fox was quick and slick and sly, and Bear was dumber than a pile of rocks. But that's how it was. And it didn't matter. Then Fox stretched the string of friendship until it snapped and they weren't friends any more. The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear is the story of two friends who fall out with one another, and about what happens next. It is outrageous, passionate and poignant, and the bittersweet ending is as ambiguous as any friendship in real life. A mash‐up of several Norwegian folk tales, The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear is told with wit and verve by Margrete Lamond, and the darkly brooding charcoal illustrations are by acclaimed artist Heather Vallance.

Pirates are swashbuckling, treasure hunting, buccaneers of the seven seas. But if your mother is the Pirate Captain and you can't stand on deck without getting seasick... that makes William the World's Worst Pirate. When the ship is attacked, can he use his own special talent to save the day?

When Cinnamon's Year 7 class has an excursion to the old gold‐mining town of Walhalla in Gippsland, trouble‐maker Showy Daniels dares Cinnamon to visit the out‐of‐bounds graveyard at night. It's a dangerous place. Showy ends up unconscious with a wound to the back of his head. His friends blame Meera, one of Cinnamon's besties, for the 'accident.' To stop Meera being bullied Cinnamon must discover exactly what happened to Showy AND solve the mystery of a haunted theatre. This is the second in a fun adventure/crime series about a twelve‐year old sleuth who lives in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne. The first book Cinnamon Stevens ‐ Crime Buster was favourably reviewed online and in Magpies magazine. It was added to the Premiers Reading Challenge Booklist in 2017. Author Information Pauline was born in New Zealand but has lived most of her life in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne - one of the places featured in her book. Becki vanished from our Year 7 camp last night. Went missing. Completely disappeared. It's up to me, Cinnamon Stevens, to solve the mystery. Only one small prob. Becki and I shared a tent and I have absolutely no idea what's happened to her. (Note to self: May need to improve powers of observation if serious about becoming a super sleuth crime buster!) This is is a REALLY good book. One of the reasons I liked it was that the police said that Becki had been found but Cinnamon did not believe it! Coco, age 11 AWESOME! I loved Cinnamon and her friends and can't wait for their next story. Samantha, age 12 This is is a SPARKLY book! Sophie, age 10

Carmichael the Carnaby's Black Cockatoo has made his first flight out of the nest and joined his parents on the long journey to their coastal feeding grounds. But when they return, they find out their home has been destroyed. What will they do? And, more importantly, what can we all do to help?

Author Information Shelly Fussell is an Education Assistant who discovered a love of working with children late in life. A new start in education gave her a renewed interest in literacy, and encouraging children to not only be aware of their environment, but kind and thoughtful toward the creatures that live in it. Our natural environment has never needed our voices to be heard more than now. She is a keen gardener and has a head full of creativity, with many projects completed in and around her home. The publication of Carmichael’s Journey is a dream come true and she hopes publishers will be beating down her door to print her other books! She has several more written and many more in her head. After living in various places across Australia, Shelly now lives in Southeast Queensland with her husband, their daughter and several furred and feathered pets. You can share her publishing journey and love of our native fauna on her Facebook page Shelly Fussell Author.

Illustrator Information Sam is a wildlife illustrator living in the beautiful Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Growing up amidst a family of bushwalkers, bird photographers and artists, it’s no surprise that her love of art and the Australian bush began at an early age. Since graduating from the University of Newcastle with a degree in Natural History Illustration, Sam has continued to develop her skills as a wildlife illustrator. She has collaborated on projects with museums, art galleries and businesses in both Australia and Canada. ZED Books

For decades Myanmar has been portrayed as a case of good citizen versus bad regime – men in jackboots maintaining a suffocating rule over a majority Buddhist population beholden to the ideals of non-violence and tolerance. But in recent years this narrative has been upended. In June 2012, violence between Buddhists and Muslims erupted in western Myanmar, pointing to a growing divide between religious communities that before had received little attention from the outside world. Attacks on Muslims soon spread across the country, leaving hundreds dead, entire neighbourhoods turned to rubble, and tens of thousands of Muslims confined to internment camps. This violence, breaking out amid the passage to democracy, was spurred on by monks, pro-democracy activists and even politicians. In this gripping and deeply reported account, Francis Wade explores how the manipulation of identities by an anxious ruling elite has laid the foundations for mass violence, and how, in Myanmar’s case, some of the most respected and articulate voices for democracy have turned on the Muslim population at a time when the majority of citizens are beginning to experience freedoms unseen for half a century. Author Information Francis Wade is a journalist specialising in Myanmar and Southeast Asia. He began reporting on Myanmar in 2009 with the exiled Democratic Voice of Burma news organisation, based in Northern Thailand, before going on to cover in-depth the transition from military rule and the violence that accompanied it. He has reported from across South and Southeast Asia for The Guardian, TIME, Foreign Policy Magazine, and others. He is now based in London.

Nawal El Saadawi is one of the greatest writers to come out of the Arab world. Born into a small Egyptian village in 1931, her life and writings have shown an extraordinary strength of character and a unique ability to create new worlds in the fight against oppression. Saadawi has been pilloried, censored, imprisoned and exiled for her refusal to accept the oppressions imposed on women by gender and class. Still, she continues to write. A Daughter of Isis is the first part of this extraordinary woman’s autobiography. In it she paints a sensuously textured portrait of the childhood that produced the freedom fighter: from the trauma of female genital mutilation at seven years old to eluding the grasp of suitors at the age of ten. We see how, as a young adult qualifying, against the odds, as doctor, she moulded her own creative power into a weapon – and how her use of words became an act of rebellion against injustice.

Nawal El Saadawi is one of the greatest writers to come out of the Arab world. Born into a small Egyptian village in 1931, her life and writings have shown an extraordinary strength of character and a unique ability to create new worlds in the fight against oppression. Saadawi has been pilloried, censored, imprisoned and exiled for her refusal to accept the oppression imposed on women by gender and class. Still, she continues to write. In A Daughter of Isis, Nawal El Saadawi painted a beautifully textured portrait of the childhood that moulded her into a novelist and fearless campaigner for freedom and the rights of women. Walking through Fire takes up the story of her extraordinary life. We read about her as a rural doctor, trying to help a young girl escape from a terrible fate imposed on her by a brutal male tyranny. We learn about her activism for female empowerment and the authorities that try to obstruct her. We travel with her into exile after her name is put on a fundamentalist death list. We witness her three marriages, each offering in their way love, companionship and shared struggle. And we gain an unprecedented insight into this most wonderful of creative minds.

Across the world, 2 billion experience menstruation, yet menstruation is seen as a mark of shame. We are told not to discuss it in public, that tampons and sanitary pads should be hidden away, the blood rendered invisible. In many parts of the world, poverty, culture and religion collide causing the taboo around menstruation to have grave consequences. Younger people who menstruate are deterred from going to school, adults from work, infections are left untreated. The shame is universal and the silence a global rule. In It’s Only Blood Anna Dahlqvist tells the shocking but always moving stories of why and how people from Sweden to Bangladesh, from the United States to Uganda, are fighting back against the shame.

Europe might appear like a continent pulling itself apart. Ten years of economic and political crises have pitted North versus South, East versus West, citizens versus institutions. And yet, these years have also shown a hidden vitality of Europeans acting across borders, with civil society and social movements showing that alternatives to the status quo already exist. This book is at once a narrative of the experience of activism and a manifesto for change. Through analyzing the ways in which neoliberalism, nationalism and borders intertwine Marsili and Milanese – co-founders of European Alternatives – argue that we are in the middle of a great global transformation, by which we have all become citizens of nowhere. Ultimately, they argue that only by organizing in a new transnational political party will the citizens of nowhere be able to struggle effectively for the utopian agency to transform the world.

On Yorkshire’s gradually-crumbling mud cliffs sits an Edwardian seaside house. In the bathroom, Jacob and Ella hide from their parents’ passionate arguments by playing the ‘Underwater Breathing’ game – until the day Jacob wakes to find his mother and sister gone. Years later, the sea’s creeping closer, his father is losing touch with reality and Jacob is trapped in his past. Then, Ella’s sudden reappearance forces him to confront his fractured childhood. As the truth about their parents emerges, it’s clear that Jacob’s time hiding beneath the water is coming to an end. '…a wonderful writer with a painterly eye for detail... There are some brilliant twists.' - Wendy Holden, Daily Mail

Three days after arriving in Zimbabwe, Natalie discovers an abandoned newborn baby on a hill near her uncle’s farm. 115 years earlier, the hill was home to the Mazowe village where Chief Tafara governed at a time of great unrest. Faced with taxation, abductions and loss of their land at the hands of the white settlers, Tafara joined forces with the neighbouring villages in what becomes the first of many uprisings. A Child Called Happiness is a story of hope, resilience and reclamation, proving that the choices made by our ancestors echo for many generations to come. ‘Gripping ... A haunting and ultimately uplifting tale of love, friendship and betrayal’ - Waterstone's Books Quarterly

Say hello to the world’s only undefeated heavyweight champion, a guy called Rocky Marciano, who defied physical limitations – ‘He’s too small, too short, too light, too old.’ With just a 67-inch reach, two left feet and under six feet tall, tough, hard-hitting Marciano blasted his way to 49 wins, 43 inside the distance. He was impervious to pain: you could knock him down but you couldn’t knock him out. Marciano KO’d Jersey Joe Walcott in a 1952 thriller to become world champion. Defending his title five times, he brought the million-dollar gate back to boxing in 1955 when he crushed Archie Moore in his final fight. He then criss-crossed America making public appearances, for cash only. He built a network of friends, businessmen and Mob guys who willingly paid his way, fed him, dressed him and flew him around. And that’s how he died, hitching a ride in a plane that crashed in an Iowa cornfield in 1969, on the eve of his 46th birthday. His mantra was, ‘If you want to live a full life, then live dangerously.’ Rocky did that, all right!

Liverpool FC Cult Heroes is devoted to 20 players who, over the years, have won a special place in the hearts of the Anfield faithful – not necessarily the greatest footballers, but a unique brotherhood of mavericks and stalwarts, local lads and big signings. And which skipper was carried through Lime Street station on the shoulders of fans? The definitive history of Manchester United’s rise from being an ‘ordinary’ side in the 30s to a force in post-war English football. Discover the story of Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy and the birth of the ‘Babes’ – the players, the games, the Building of the Dynasty. Having had the foresight to appoint an untried manager in Busby, the former Manchester City star overcame the challenge of having no home ground and cobbled together a United side to win the league and FA Cup. A lack of financial power saw the club embark on a youth development scheme under Murphy. Crowned First Division champions again in 1956, Busby took his youngsters to compete against the great sides in the fledgling European Cup; but it was a determination that was to prove fatal in Munich in 1958, on the homeward journey from a quarter-final tie in Belgrade. The unfulfilled dream had become a nightmare.

Tony Greig is remembered as the colourful captain who led cricket into its biggest crisis of the last century. An all-rounder who mixed boldness with belligerence, he was the first South African to skipper England, restoring national pride with victory in India after poundings at the hands of Australia and the West Indies. A controversial and charismatic competitor whose “make them grovel” comment about the West Indies signalled trouble, he later lost the captaincy for recruiting players for Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket. More than three decades later Greig has never been fully absolved. Featuring many new interviews, including with Greig himself, before his death, the book asks whether cricket history judges the accomplished all-rounder fairly, or is coloured by off-field controversies. Tony Greig offers a compelling portrait of a fascinating cricketing era, was shortlisted for Best Cricket Book at the 2012 British Sports Book Awards and described by The Cricketer as “a triumph”.
