Words from the Wise

You have to give merit where merit is due; this weekend I saw the new Tim Winton in three of the weekend papers. Across Fairfax, Murdoch and the Schwartz Media Saturday Paper. Well done

The stats for this book are fascinating as 44% of the sales are for the hardback edition and 56% for paperback. Almost 95% of the hardback sales have gone via the online vendors.

I also want to give a shout out to a bookseller from Dubbo (NSW) for achieving the 35 years in the book business on the retail side - congratulations to Dave Pankhurst and his people at The Book Connection.

On the paying respect list we pay our respects to the family of Nick Hudson on his passing this month at the age of 84. Nick was an enthusiastic, outgoing, larger than life figure and I suppose he had publishing in his veins for more than 60 years. He arrived in Australia from the UK in 1958, with the brief to set up an Australian arm of Heinemann Educational. His major project during the 1970s was the Heinemann Australian Dictionary, the first Australian general dictionary that did not start as an adaptation of an overseas original. As a result, overseas rights were sold, with the book appearing in adaptations for the UK, the US, Canada and New Zealand. It was also probably the first dictionary in the world to be created with an integrated editorial and production computer program. (With thanks to Editors Vic)

I am thinking of who would be the longest serving rural bookseller under the one ownership, one brand for 35 years. And noted in the Weekend Australian that Ern Malley turned 100 this weekend. Thank you to the Booksellers who have shown interest in our Dennis Jones International business via Gardners UK. I am off to the London Book Fair to see if we can find some more publishers to work in this initiative. The plan is to have purchases come via Gardners for lists not represented in ANZ. What Rebel Girls 2 has shown is that if there is an appetite there is a way to make these things work. Any suggestions please email me at International@dennisjonesinternational.com.au I hope in this new title order from we have listed Susanna De Vries next work Royal Marriages; Camilla, Diane, Kate & Meghan. This has been a collaborative effort and I hope the sales results we get globally will satisfy the time (an unknown cost) of our business help develop the work. I recently met with Lisa Messenger and her team in Sydney to look at her initiatives over the next few years. We are going to see a lot more of Lisa in our book works and she will be highly visible at talks and events on the East Coast of Australia. A real work – warrior! Speaking of books with Warrior in the title we have the follow up to Hey Warrior in this list - Hey Awesome by the time we get the stock of Hey Awesome we will be at sales of close to 8000 copies (combined editions of HB, PB & eBook) Can’t wait to see how we can sell 5000 of Hey Awesome by Christmas.

Also to acknowledge the passing of Jeff St John, whose life story, The Jeff St John Story - The Inside Outsider, by James Anfuso’s Starman Publishing in Perth. Sales comment. We have had stronger months and await the trade to turn back to stronger support across the list. We still have the ongoing growth and market share by the online businesses. Once again we are able to supply daily onix, monthly new title images if you are wanting to have a better control of consumer destiny. Best wishes Dennis Jones PS The launch highlight for the month was Naked for Satan – huge statement for local publishing and our hopes that this book will go international.

Hubert 'Oppy' Opperman was a sporting icon, a cycling phenomenon whose epic feats of endurance captivated the cycling world. For over two decades, he dominated almost every race he entered and shattered record after record in Australia and Great Britain. In 1928, he led the first Australasian team to ever contest the Tour de France. But Oppy was more than a just a champion. During the Great Depression, a time of painful economic and social change, he became a transcendent symbol of Australian fortitude. He became a household name, a legend ‐ as popular as the cricketer Don Bradman and the racehorse Phar Lap. Until now, Oppy has never been the subject of a complete biography. By peeling away decades of mythology, Daniel Oakman tells Opperman's story like never before. As well as vividly retelling his sporting triumphs, this book is the first to consider the legacy of Opperman's post‐cycling career. It explores the emotional pain of his private life, the controversies that dogged his seventeen‐year political career, including his post as Immigration Minister in the Menzies Government and the remarkable and far‐reaching changes he helped bring to Australian immigration policy.

Author Information Daniel Oakman is a curator, historian and bike rider. He has curated exhibitions about cars, cities and urban design; including Freewheeling, a ground‐breaking travelling exhibition about cycling in Australia. Daniel writes about cycling, sport, social history and politics. His first book, Facing Asia, was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s History Awards. He lives in Canberra with his partner Cecilie and a dog called Gilbert.

In September 1958, only minutes into a professional road race, Australia's best cyclist, Russell Mockridge, was dead, his head and body crushed under the wheels of a bus. The death of the Olympic Gold medallist and Tour de France competitor was an embarrassment for cycling officials. Mockridge was 30 when he was killed and planning a new assault on European professional racing. On the 50th anniversary of his death Melbourne journalist Martin Curtis revisits the life and death of Russell Mockridge. He finds a literate, urbane, but shy man, an outsider in the rough‐and‐tumble world of professional cycling. He also investigates passionately held family views that the death was not properly investigated. This is a compelling account of a legendary Australian sportsman and one that will be of real interest to the growing number of cycling enthusiasts as well as a broad general readership.

Biography: royalty

Pirgos Press

From the author of Royal Mistresses and sixteen entertaining and informative biographies of interesting women comes this is an uncensored account of bizarre royal marriages and the cruelty of nine centuries of marriages of Princes of Wales and monarchs to titled virginal European princesses and teenage aristocrats who they did not love. Princes married to gain huge dowries from their wives or military alliances with powerful countries but often preferred seductive mistresses to their wives who, as Princess Diana observed on her 'Secrets' videotape, were used as 'baby factories.' Young Princess Isabella of France was a romantic and was shocked to discover her new husband in love with gay Sir Piers Gavaston. His homosexual relationship caused so much jealousy at court and Gaveston was murdered. Equally, young and romantic Princess Anna of Denmark found her middle-aged husband King James I in love with the charismatic handsome courtier ennobled as Duke of Buckingham. Both these royal husbands spent long periods ignoring their arranged brides and only visited their bedchambers to fulfill their duty and attempt to sire 'the heir and the spare' so their dynasty would carry on the line. Tall, handsome, virile King Charles II was a sex addict and sired fifteen children out of wedlock and ennobled five of his illegitimate sons as dukes. He spent little time with his arranged bride, the young Portuguese Princess Catherine whose dowry he squandered on seductive mistresses and flaunted Restoration beauties like Nell Gwyn, Barbara Villiers and Louise de Keroualle at court. King Charles' virginal teenage bride made the mistake of falling in love with her husband, but Catherine was unable give him an heir so spent much of her married life alone. Charles let a riotous life heading a court obsessed with sex. He conducted state affairs from the luxurious apartment in Whitehall Palace, the suite he had given, arrogant and debauched mistress Barbara Villiers who bore him 6 illegitimate children and hated her rival, Nell Gwyn. George Augustus, Prince of Wales, found his mail order bride, Princess Caroline, so physically repugnant he called for a glass of brandy and only consummated a marriage made for her large dowry to pay off his debts. Edward VII had at least fifteen mistresses. These facts were hidden from the public who believed in the fairy story that a royal wedding meant the bride and groom lived happy ever after. These fascinating true stories reveal how money and power were seen as more important than love. The final chapters describe how after centuries of unhappy royal wives, Prince William and Prince Harry have been allowed to marry for love alone. In the 21st century, Prince William and Prince Harry, painfully aware of their mother's unhappy marriage and its damaging effects on her have stood out against the system which the Queen has finally modernised and allowed them to marry for love. They have both chosen as wives who are highly intelligent university graduates, stylish girls who after a few 'princess lessons' about protocol and who they should curtsey to have changed the system which made so many young wives deeply unhappy.

This book is a MUST for anyone who has anything to do with money. It's for the individual, the business owner and the policymakers. The ability to make money and the ability to control money are two very different skills. Tony Melvin had mastered the skill of making money at an early age, yet despite this ability, he found himself in massive debt. At the age of 28, after selling all of his assets, he still owed over $300,000 with no income, no job and no place to live! It was at this turning point in his life he realized he had poor habits. He also realized he had never been taught how to control money. Overcoming all the odds, Tony repaid his debt and avoided bankruptcy. But his greatest triumph was discovering the Rich Habits. 15 years later Tony has taught and helped thousands implement the Rich Habits, eliminating debts and rising toward being truly rich. Now, for the first time, all 22 Rich Habits are clearly defined and explained as he takes you on an inspiring journey of victory. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: -The 3 things you must do to be Rich. -How to control your money. -The two different types of debt. -How to get rid off credit cards and personal loans. -How to negotiate with banks and lenders to eliminate debt fast. -How to communicate with creditors (with example letters). -How to deal with legal firms. -How to handle debt collectors. -How to avoid going bankrupt. -How to organize your life and minimize stress. -How to achieve your financial goals. -How to develop successful money habits. -How to play the game of investing and WIN! Author Information Born in the UK in 1973, Tony Melvin grew up with a passion for business. He founded his first “enterprise” around the age of 10 years old: a car washing business. His younger sister Catherine and friend Julia were the hired help. Tony was the salesman. Despite the business having only one client and lasting only a single day, he never forgot how easy it was to make money solving people's problems. Since then, Tony has learned the ropes of business and finance from his studies and experience. Over the past 20 years he has travelled Australia and Asia teaching finance and business principles to thousands. As managing director, he helped build the fastest-growing accounting firm in Australia, and during that same period he co-authored three best-selling finance books. While Tony is a successful business man and investor, he considers himself first and foremost an educator. Considered by many an authority on finance matters, Tony is regularly interviewed and quoted in the press. As a result, Tony is a sought-after speaker. Today, Tony is focusing his energy on educating people about the Rich Habits. He believes that everyone can truly prosper with the right knowledge and skills. | 28 | a novel | twenty‐eight years in the making |surprising and eloquent | a mirror maze | emotional intensity | original, courageous, and memorable | "28 is very powerful and intense, questioning again and again all the ambivalences of life and living, of destiny, motivation, and consequence. To tackle such themes is a very ambitious undertaking, and it is successful because of the narrative element, the character hints, and the human elements. The ending is both surprising and eloquent." ‐ Thomas Shapcott, Order of Australia for contribution to literature and the Arts, Patrick White Award. "28 is an original, courageous, and memorable novel. It engages the reader in an important debate, and leads us to ask ourselves challenging questions. The best of Brien Cole's work is the story of Morning Parrot Trees. And it is superb. The concreteness and fantasy of Fisher's search for the parrot flower are perfectly poised. This is imagiinative writing of a high order. The technique is to take the reader inside the action and never let go. His skill lies in knowing what matters. Perhaps his most impressive characteristic is that he does know what matters and resists wasting words on unneccessary explanations. The best of these stories are mulled over and mature, every detail if lovingly placed. ‐ Rodney Hall, Sydney Morning Herald Brien Cole has the rare ability in a prose writer of handling flamboyant metaphors with credible panache, and rhythm avoiding the ponderous... We experience the casual interchange between fantasy and reality that distinguishes the best of Peter Carey's work ‐ the insinuating reasonableness of the fable rather than simply gawking at the bizarre. Brien Cole's characters are impossible to place socially ‐ blue collar fringe dwellers, bourgeois drop‐outs... They communicate only haphazardly with their fellows, yet feel betrayed by nature. A fascinationg collection both of characters and of stories. The most original I have encountered for some time. ‐ Bill Turner, Imprints

In Egypt, in Gallipoli and in France, they are many who sleep beneath a small wooden cross and each cross will testify to people over there that we from downunder knew how to fight for a noble ide.. In this WW1 novel, published in English for the first time, Jim and Dick are two lively boys from the bush, along with 20,000 other Australians and New Zealanders, who embarked on what seemed to be a great adventure when they enlisted in the 1st AIF ‐ to fight for ‘King and Empire’. Their experience is cut short when both are seriously wounded on the Gallipoli peninsula. They find themselves in beds next to each other on a hospital ship headed for England. As they slowly recover, they discover the ‘old country’ of their ancestors. Unfortunately, they fall for the same young English nurse and a love triangle emerges to trouble their futures. French/Australian author Paul Wenz based his novel and short stories on personal experience as an immigrant grazier in central NSW and working for the Red Cross in France and London during World War I. The writing is simple, at times poetic and humorous, instinctively seductive, devoid of convention and banality. Wenz is a brilliant noticer – a talent one is born with ... and without which no novelist can draw us into the world he is making. ‐ Helen Garner

Whether it's the paramedic who is first on the scene, or the police and other professionals who deal with death as part of their daily work, the burden they endure is something most of us could not comprehend. Impact chronicles the working lives of police, paramedics, doctors and forensic experts. It offers a rare insight into the personal cost of their jobs ‐ from alcohol abuse and PTSD to mental and physical health issues and relationship problems. Their stories are raw, honest accounts of cases they attended or investigated and the emotional toll of dealing with trauma. Impact is a powerful and visceral look, through the eyes of these front‐line professionals, at the ripple effect of murder and violence on society. - Book contains crime scene photos

Vikki Petraitis took to writing true crime because, unlike crime fiction, it was so raw and it told the story of real people, real grief, real loss, real horror. A school teacher by day, Vikki had no idea that writing one book about one unsolved murder would give her a second career that has run alongside her chosen profession for 25 years. She has researched, investigated and written about real Australian crimes, from the well‐known to the obscure; and interviewed countless police, crime scene professionals, victims, survivors and families. She did ride‐alongs with members of Victoria Police so she could learn about their most memorable cases, and found herself right there with them when a serial killer's third victim was found. Vikki spent time with the dog squad learning how the four‐legged police officers are trained to work with their two‐legged partners. And she's become biographer to two well‐known former cops, and to one of the many victims of institutional child abuse. Her career as a true crime writer has resulted in 13 books and counting, with subjects and titles as diverse as The Frankston Serial Killer, Crime Scene Investigations, Forensics, Cops, Once a Copper: Brian 'the Skull' Murphy, and the one that started it all ‐ The Phillip Island Murder.

Author Information Vikki Petraitis is the author of 13 true crime books, one football biography, and has contributed stories to four true crime anthologies. Those books include: The Phillip Island Murder (with Paul Daley); Victims, Crimes and Investigators, The Frankston Murders/Frankston Serial Killer (two editions); Rockspider; Cops - True stories from Australian Police; Forensics - true stories from Australian Police Files; Crime Scene Investigations; Salvation - the true story of Rod Braybon’s fight for justice; Disgraced? The Cop at the Centre of Melbourne's Gangland War; The Dog Squad; and Once a Copper. She is also full-time secondary school teacher, a member and past convenor of Sisters in Crime Australia, and a teacher of creative writing. Twenty-five years ago, serial killer Paul Denyer terrorised the bayside suburb of Frankston. Twenty-five years later, the trauma of his seven-week killing spree still haunts the community. The spate of murders in 1993 touched many more lives than just the three victims. All of Melbourne was gripped with fear, as Frankston and surrounding suburbs were flooded with police hunting the serial killer of three young women. It began on June 11 when Elizabeth Stevens was murdered on her way home from the library. On July 8, Debbie Fream who'd left her 12-day-old baby with a friend while she dashed out for milk, was abducted and killed. Three weeks later, Year 12 student, Natalie Russell, was brutally murdered on her way home from school. When Paul Denyer, an odd young man, was arrested the day after Natalie's body was found, the police and public were shocked by his lack of emotion. Denyer, who was only 21-years-old, spoke of the three young women with contempt as he described their final moments. Their deaths had simply fuelled his bloodlust Eleven years later, just as the public's memory of the Frankston murders began to fade, convicted serial killer, Paul Denyer, made front-page news with his quest to become a woman. The Frankston Murders: 25 years on details the shocking crimes and explores the lingering effects of what Denyer did. Now 25-yearsold, Debbie Fream's son Jake speaks for the first time about the loss of his mother. And Carmel and Brian Russell share their dream for Denyer's ongoing incarceration, as the killer of their child will be eligible to apply for parole for the first time in 2023. Author Information Vikki Petraitis is the author of 13 true crime books, one football biography, and has contributed stories to four true crime anthologies. On the morning of 5 May 1998, HMAS Westralia proceeded to sea. As the engines were brought to full power hoses burst. Flames erupted and thick, black smoke filled the engine room. The crew fought bravely to save their ship but were unable to save midshipman Megan Pelly, Petty Officer Shaun Smith, Leading Seaman Bradley Meek and Able Seaman Phillip Carroll. The human cost was lost in the battle and blame game between different government departments and private companies. The families wanted the truth and genuine compassion but their hard‐fought battle for justice revealed a labyrinth of innuendo concerning fraud, nepotism, dishonesty, incompetence and official cover‐up. The questions remained: Who was responsible? And would they be held accountable?

Cruel Conflict is the story of the men who served in HMAS Perth between 1939 and 1942. The courage and humour of those who were taken as prisoners of war, who endured the hardships of the camps and laboured on the Burma‐Thailand railway is a story of triumph and tragedy. Kathryn Spurling has interviewed the survivors and their families as well as mining thousands of documents to weave together a moving tale. It is ultimately a story of chance, endurance and the power of the human spirit.

A Grave Too Far Away illuminates the war experiences of the men of Bomber Command and the terrible effects the war had on their families ‐ an estimated 11,000 Australians lost a loved one for the Bomber Command cause. The Spitfires and Hurricanes of RAF Fighter Command defended the United Kingdom against German aerial attacks and was a major turning point of the war. Read the moving, true stories of British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand air force men and women who played vital roles in destroying a significant portion of the Nazi Germany war industry. An unbelievably important role was heaped onto the shoulders of a squad with an average age of 22 (some as young as 18), but their valiant efforts and ability to transcend the most dire war circumstances enabled them to force Germany to relocate crucial resources into defending the home front. This book is a tribute to the Australians who served in Bomber Command during World War II and made the ultimate sacrifice ‐ read their astonishing tales.

Australia's first submarines, AE1 and AE2, entered Sydney Harbour in time to join the celebration of Empire Day 24 May 1914 after a voyage from Britain that The London Times declared: 'manifestly the most remarkable yet performed by a submarine' ‐ 83 days, 60 of which were spent at sea. Australians were fascinated by their submarines and proud that their young navy was bravely at the forefront of such technology. Britain declared war against Germany on 4 August 1914 and the British Admiralty despatched the Australian fleet to capture German New Guinea and destroy the German Pacific Fleet. On 14 September AE1 left Rabaul Harbour, with orders to patrol east of Cape Gazelle, and was seen off Duke of York Island in St George's Channel. Then AE1 simply disappeared. This was the first loss of a military unit during WWI and the beginning of a terrible war for Australians. An ensuing search found no trace, and for the families of the 35 officers and men onboard AE1 life would never be the same. The Mystery of AE1: Australia's Missing Submarine and Crew traces the beginnings of Australia's navy and searches for answers to the questions that continue to be asked: Who or what contributed to the loss of Australia's first submarine?

The Terrorist Cell Leader, Mohammad Bin Abdul Samad, sets in motion his plan to attack civilian and government targets in Australia. His motivation is both ideological and revenge‐driven. He is ruthless, cunning and consumed by his dedication to achieve maximum destruction. His primary weapons are the suicide bombers he has conditioned for the task, and a secret group with a special mission. Bridget Anderson, Controller Intelligence Operations, gets an early indication of the imminent attacks but little substance. She alerts the Government and State Anti‐Terrorist elements. Gradually, the scope and nature of the terrorist intention becomes clearer. Attacks are imminent with potentially large casualties. Anti‐Terrorist and police forces are alerted and the hunt commences. Information comes to hand and is acted upon. The pressure is intense. There are wins and losses until the final deadly confrontation between the two adversaries, Bridget and Samad.

Author Information During his working life, the author had careers in banking, the Air Force and civil aviation. The Air Force was his primary career, retiring with senior rank to live on the Gold Coast. His experiences ranged across management of computer developments, project management, organisation review and defence related activities. He held positions at a General Manager and Director level. As is the case, personal interests change relative to the years. Active sports such as squash and water polo, for many years, were replaced by golf and weekly gym visits. Intellectual pursuits became focused on politics, contemporary history and the world we live in. The latter prompting his current story — fiction, certainly, but generally an ever‐present problem in this day and age.

James Armstrong arrived to join his wife, Alicia, after her grandmother had a bad fall and called for her granddaughter to help. James was working at that time on a passport scam involving his wife, without her knowledge. Percy Gray is the father of the surgeon who operated on Alicia’s grandmother’s arm and called his father, a retired Police detective, to have a look at the situation that caused the fall, thinking foul play had played a part, so fate stepped in to introduce Percy Gray and James Armstrong to solve the “Granny’s fall” affair. The passport scam was also solved by James, with help from Alicia, but he now had to make up his mind whether to stay in London for his job or take up Percy Gray’s offer as a partner in a private investigation business.

Author Information Eve Grafton was born in Western Australia and spent many years overseas with her husband. They returned to Australia for their sons’ education. Later in life they lived on a hobby farm, becoming practically self‐sufficient, with meat, wine and vegetables all from the farm from their own, satisfying hard work. They now live in Perth, Western Australia, enjoying visits from their sons and their families and Eve has replaced her many other hobbies with writing novels.

This story belongs to Mabs. It has never ceased to amaze her that all these extraordinary things could have happened to one so ordinary. From the calm waters of the mouth of the River Murray in South Australia, to the furious gales of the Red Sea, she has indeed experienced a life worth living, along with a heap of newsworthy details in between. The reader is taken on a journey from her early days in Goolwa, to the political scene in Canberra in mid‐winter, followed by a leap into the heat and fish sauce of Bangkok to life in the Middle East in Beirut. Along the way she met and married Mick, an airline pilot, and so began their introduction into the boating fraternity. With very little modern gear and questionable sailing qualifications, they set forth up the Red Sea with calm confidence, into a somewhat unsteady world which was both alarming and frightening. In this book, she tells us about it all.

Author Information Mabs was born in Goolwa, South Australia. She graduated through Adelaide, Canberra and Bangkok and married Mick, an airline pilot. They then settled in the Middle East and had many Red Sea adventures before finally returning to Australia. She is a Queenslander now, and from her balcony on the Gold Coast, she can see the Broadwater with its pleasure boats, tourist boats, yachts and dinghies — a constantly changing vista. But that’s been like her life, hasn’t it?

To a quiet life has come something truly extraordinary. Jared's seen the Lights since he was a child. Every night for a few minutes at ten pm a strange beacon would shine high up in the darkened factory opposite his tiny house. He ventured there one fateful night, and there he found the spectral creatures. Since then they've taken him to fantastical places, far away from the grey monotony of his life and the darkness of his past. All he's ever cared about is keeping the secret intact and leading a quiet life of anonymity. But it's a lonely, introspective existence that's always eaten away at him. When change comes to the factory, he finally finds another that he comes to trust and then share his secrets. But in the shadow of Amelia's arrival is one that already knows everything, and has intentions that are both dark and vicious. An ancient ritual is then taken to another time. Candlesight is a new fiction work by the author of Within Fallen Light and Behind Two Voices; the first installment of a sprawling story, one where the boundary between life and death is blurred.

We may not be ready for the future, but it's coming anyway. The phrase 'taming the juggernaut' suggests that it is necessary to repair the workings of the capitalistic system we are all living within. Rather than adjusting the mathematical formulas, which is occurring automatically, these ideas are directed towards the human aspect of our system. We are the absolute reason for the juggernaut's existence and depending on how we function within the system and how much we contribute, determines how much we will get out of it. The second book in the "Plotting the Future" series.

The idea of a man from the future presenting himself at your back door seems like a surreal device to explain how transient our lives really are. What if it suddenly occurred to us that we should answer to future generations for our actions? None of us feels connected to their lives in any way. Every puzzle we solve and every time we invent something new changes how we live, and has the potential to recalibrate and reorganise our world. We must accept that we are the future's past and the past's future. None of us has the power to change the whole world, but each of us is directly accountable to those who will follow us. We are living in the past's future, and the future's past. Can we determine where evolution will take us next? Let me introduce ourselves: we are the humans. Although we don't give it a moment's thought to who we are or how we function as a species, remarkably it has taken us millions of years to arrive at our present incarnation. It is true that we are living seemingly like magical beings. We cannot subjectively analyse everything about ourselves all the time, but 'we' are the dominant species on our planet, and we have the huge responsibility for how our world will evolve. By studying the civilisations from the past we can organise how our societies are and will formulate in the future. We are approaching a new era of rapidly advancing technology, and it will be intriguing to observe how we adapt and change with it. The fourth book in the "Plotting the Future" series

If it was asked of you to fix the world's economic problems, and you were given the power to do so, where would you start? If I then asked you to stop and seriously give it more than ten minutes thought, what would you change, and how would you do it? Every second of every day costs us millions of dollars without us doing anything because every government is in debt. How would the dynamic of the world be different if there were no debts and those funds could be freed up to enhance the lives of everyone on the planet? What if I said that we can stop the rampant explosion of capitalism and take control of it, and in fact, we can grind the whole thing to a halt. In twenty years we could have restructured the course of history for thousands of generations to come, if we started right now. Why aren't we? Just because it's difficult doesn't mean it's impossible. What is the hurry when humanity may have millions of years left, and we act like there's no tomorrow? Author Information Kate Seaton was born in Melbourne in 1962 and grew up near the Queensland border ranges. Her two children are both a source of enormous love and pride. Writing poetry, writing music and painting are great passions, and Kate finds the quiet evenings the most creative time of the day. Kate is a nurse, has a Commercial Arts Degree, and she presently lives on a property raising cattle. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

The Flora of Melbourne is a resource that assists in the recognition and botanical identification of species while encouraging an awareness of the interrelationships between indigenous plants and animals. It identifies the usefulness of these species, to the local Aborigines in the past, and to all who wish to understand our diminishing natural environment in the present. The Flora of Melbourne works on a few different levels. It provides an important record of the plant life that developed in the Greater Melbourne area over a long period of time. It indicates the probable distribution of plant communities and the species within them prior to European settlement, based on historical data, remnant vegetation, and the prevailing climatic and soil conditions of each area. At another level it records the breakdown of these important relationships that has led to both the extinction of individual species and the reduction in the range of species from a number of locations across the entire Melbourne area. Finally, Flora of Melbourne is a tool to help us nurture or repair such relationships in an attempt to maintain or re‐ establish these habitats and the plants within them. * Covers enlarged Greater Melbourne area

Creating Real Wealth opens with a thorough and intelligent discussion on the various aspects of wealth creation. Author Michael Kemp encourages readers to first define their perception of wealth before they set out on their journey to achieve financial security. The vague goal of 'becoming wealthy' is unachievable if the more you earn the more you spend. He warns against measuring financial goals and achievements against those of the Joneses or the stars of the screen and entertainment worlds. Instead he reviews the wisdom of those intelligent investors who have created real and lasting wealth. Kemp's reasoning is easy to follow. He believes there are only really four things the wealth‐creator needs to know about money: how to earn it, save it, invest it and enjoy it. In this fascinating book you will learn: - How to set financial objectives that will lead to financial security - The importance of saving and the value of compounding returns - To take the emotion out of investing and think like an intelligent investor - A simple accumulation strategy using indirect investment tools - How to appreciate your financial circumstances and enjoy the wealth you have created.

A Delicious Bunch is a unique book in that it includes flowers suited to growing in ALL our Australian climatic zones, including cool temperate and sub‐tropical to tropical. A selection such as this is just not seen in any of the other books on edible flowers that typically cover English roses, primulas etc. It is written with gardeners and cooks of all abilities in mind. It is a lavish feast for the eyes and an inspiration for greenthumbs to grow organically and harvest for impressive results. It has a handy reference chart for flowering seasons for each flower. The recipes are easy enough that a modestly experienced cook could give them a go. All recipes are vegetarian and many are dairy and gluten free. A Delicious Bunch is a delight for the eyes and stomach. The photography is 'stunning' says the designer. 'The book is magnificent', says the manager of the Sydney Botanic Gardens Bookshop.

Sure she is going to be bored in a place which doesn't even have the internet, she discovers there is much more to Pelican Rock that she expected. Are the pelicans really magic? What is the secret of the ruined lighthouse? Has she found the place where she belongs? And, perhaps, not just a place... Whisker is a Pie Rat apprentice with an appetite for danger and a flair for lucky escapes. He goes from one catastrophe to the next quicker than the time it takes to raise a pair of giant underpants up the mast! With the mysterious Forgotten Map in his possession, Whisker embarks on the next stage of his quest to find the missing key. Together with his friends, Ruby Rat and Hook Hand Horace, Whisker must overcome a host of jungle dangers and outsmart the deadliest enemies in his attempt to claim the key.

Whisker is a Pie Rat apprentice on the treasure hunt of a lifetime. With the Forgotten Map and the King's Key safely in his grasp, Whisker joins the ratbag crew of the Apple Pie on their voyage to the mysterious Island of Destiny. Every four years, the greatest pirate crews on the seven seas gather for an epic tournament of strength and skill. In the Pirate Cup, there is no silver and no bronze, only gold, gold, gold for the winning team, and the legendary Trophy of Champions. As an official entrant, Whisker has more on his mind than victory. He is on the trail of a fox in a black trench coat ‐ and an answer...

Book 5 of the Pie Rats series. Deep in the heart of Aladrya stands a mighty mountain. Rising high above the clouds, its rocky crags and windswept cliffs are home to four species of birds. With only three days left until the full moon feast, Whisker's rescue mission hangs in the balance. Even if he can reach the mountain alive, he still has to outwit and out‐fly the dreaded birds of prey.

Around Whisker's neck hangs a tiny golden pendant ‐ a symbol of hope and a reminder of his family. Passed down from generation to generation, the golden anchor is much more than just a lucky charm. It may be Whisker's final hope of saving his parents. The thrilling sixth book in the award‐winning series.

When 16‐year‐old, Jack Watson, and his three friends are chosen to compete in the Smartest Student in Australia competition they find themselves on a train hurtling through the Australian desert to Plato College, an isolated school owned by Sir Hubert Peabody. Soon Jack realises something is not right about Plato College. For one thing, all of the tutors and supervisors in charge of the 100 contestants look like robots, and the college is surrounded by high fences patrolled by armed guards. Jack does some scouting around the college complex and discovers a plot so diabolical that it puts the lives of all the students and, perhaps, the world at risk…something so terrifying it leads him and his friends on a hair‐raising escape into the desert with no food and water and little chance of survival. Jack and his friends must use all their intelligence and courage to try to defeat Sir Hubert’s wicked plan.

Author Information Robyn Collins lives in Melbourne, Australia. Before becoming a writer of children’s adventure books, she was a teacher and school principal. Collins is the author of The Niello Necklace Mystery and The Secret of the Niello; and The Entwhistle Experiment series of four books about the exciting adventures of Horatio Entwhistle and his friends. In this latest book, she tackles the world of Artificial Intelligence and tells the story of Jack Watson and his friends and their battle in the Australian desert against robots so real they can think and feel emotions. Her next book The Giverny Mystery Book 1: The Giverny Chronicle, the first in a trilogy about Charlie and Henry Tremayne’s quest to defeat the forces of evil and bring peace to the world is due for publication in late 2018. In additional, she has a long list of publications in educational writing, including 10 x 4000 word research papers per year in the Independent Schools Queensland Briefings publication, a chapter in the ACEL publication, Leading Australia’s Schools and 10-12 articles in publications such as Teacher and The Professional Educator and is currently the Editor of Independence, the journal of AHISA, the Association of Heads of Independent Schools Australia. hy do some development pro ects succeed where others fail? This book looks at the success stories and considers what enabled them to alleviate poverty in some of the world s most deprived communities. sing case studies from ten countries across atin merica, frica, and sia, eera Tiwari s innovative approach offers a multi layered understanding of poverty in order to provide insights into causal, enabling, and impeding factors. hile a macrolevel analysis of development is a common feature of much of the current literature, there has been little attempt to develop a microlevel understanding of development at the grassroots. Tiwari s work fills this important gap while drawing attention to the importance of engaging local actors at an individual, collective, and state level, demonstrating how achieving a convergence of goals among all actors is a crucial and overlooked component to a development pro ect s success.

It is the ability to bend facts to one s will not through a command of historical knowledge but through a command of historical ignorance.
