March 2018 It is Sunday and I am on the noon flight to Sydney. It would be easier if it was a parade of supplier meetings interstate, but this is a mix of appointments made by Joscelyn Kevan who is on her long service leave and my first appearance in Sydney for some time. The visit is complex to put into one bag on the flight; many people at the office assist to get the order forms ready, to brief me on the publisher and book back stories; then how do I get away with four bags on the flight? I was thrilled to get a text from Rebecca Herrmann advising that she has been successful in the status of "FutureBook Leader of the Year 2017". This status and global recognition is so well deserved; I admire her guts and foresight. Well done! I attended the Small Press Network Annual Conference as a panellist on the subject of "What does a book distributor do?" It even exhausted me when I noted what we attempt over a 12 month period. If anyone would like a copy of my presentation please send an email to Jenny Kemp who formatted my presentation. Is work hard? Like you we are at the coal face 24/7 to both answer, defend and try to remain relevant. Not easy as you can do without the smaller suppliers and simply pitch in with the multi nationals books. What would you gain? What would you lose? We do live in a time of saturated consumer choice: and we have to form our business offer to either rejoice under all of those options or fade to the back of the hall. Not easy. Our bestselling work last month was The Grade Cricketer odd considering that it has been out for a couple of years. Well the authors' new book caused more than a ripple on the sales of our first volume. In my sales rep capacity I resold it with the request to keep on looking after the smaller businesses against the might and wealth of A&U. Our versions are all globally available and we saw consumers from all over the world purchase. Next will be to discuss another offset run with David Tenenbaum from Melbourne Books.

Words from the Wise Our switch to StarTrack and the knowledge sharing required to implement this change together with still running the Aust Post in tandem has started. Our hope is to get the books to you faster to satisfy your customers. The year 2018 will bring many strategies to how we deal with content. Some of the changes, ideas, will take a few years to come to fruition, some will be quicker. If we don't have a strategical plan we don't have a business. We could sit out the next few years by getting by, but why not keep on being both ambitious and innovative where I work. We have a food chain of over 25 people if you include our sales agents as well as selling books in NZ & UK plus growth of our digital assets. By the way our DJ International business will start to grow as I have made the decision to attend the London Book Fair with the sole intent to acquire lists where overseas "able" suppliers will deliver into ANZ. Our colleagues at Gardners have approved for 2018 another year of surcharge free trading to aid your businesses as well as facilitate the establishment of DJ International. Looking forward to a gutsy 2018 where we as an industry lead with our best and continue to dig deep with supply. Thanks And thanks to Abbey's for having a pocket of Rockefeller and the Demise of Ibu Pertiwi (Sid Harta Publishers) face out. As I complete these notes we are still in the fortunate position of having 8 trading days before month end. The people behind the business have done a great job against the matching of demand with stock on hand. Watch out for a barn burner 2018. DJ

Located in the heart of Fitroy on bustling Brunswick Street, Naked for Satan has become a landmark destination that epitomises the distinctive Melbourne restaurant/bar scene. Eating and drinking at NfS is a totally sensory experience, from the historic vodka distillery in the entrance, the naked wallpaper, the Basque inspired Pintxos, the two world class chefs producing exquisite cuisine and the vodka infusions sipped on a rooftop terrace with one of the most amazing views in Melbourne. Inspired by the unique bars in San Sebestian and Bilbao, Naked for Satan opened on street level as a vodka and pintxos bar in 2010. The fourth floor Naked in the Sky rooftop Restaurant and Bar opened in December 2012; a testament to the vision, determination and resilience of experienced and successful Melbourne restaurateurs Max and Pat Fink with their partner Eddie Crupi. As well as a photographic essay illustrating the unique visual experience of NfS and the much loved Pintxos and Cocktails, this book showcases the exquisite menu of it's two highly experienced chefs: Kevin Middleton and Mark Favaloro. Each presents their favourite small, medium and large dishes plus desserts, all designed to be served as part of a sharing menu. EVERY AFL/VFL PLAYER SINCE 1897 This will be the 11th edition of the publication known as the Bible of footy. First published in 1992, it has sold over 120,000 copies in total. When Ben McKay ran onto the ground for North Melbourne in the Round 23, 2017 game against Brisbane he would have felt the same sense of enthusiasm and uncertainty as the long list of footballers who have gone before him. Young Ben became the 12,580th man to appear in League football since the competition began way back in May 1897. As the last debutante for 2017 he faced a vastly different scenario in so many ways to those pioneers of 1897. The warriors who slogged it out on four suburban Melbourne ovals would never have dreamed that this would grow into Australia's biggest national sporting competition with 18 teams spanning Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. Nor would they have thought that one day the competition would play a game in New Zealand or China, or would play games in a purpose built stadium under a roof. For Ben McKay and all those before him, those thoughts were non-existent. The age-old dilemma of how to get his hands on the ball and get a kick was first and foremost. Ben McKay is one of 1101 footballers who have just the one game next to their names. Surprisingly 20 per cent of all players will have careers that don't extend beyond three games. The turnover is such that since the last edition of this book a total of 349 players have debuted in the AFL. Footy is an everevolving game, and so too is this Encyclopedia as new facts constantly emerge and are added to the tales of players from long ago as well as those from today. "This thorough and accurate reference work contains the bottom line of all football lore: who played how many games, in what position, for whom: and to how great an effect. Excellent for testing one's memory. Did Alex Jesaulenko really play a few games for St Kilda or was I just stoned?" Imre Salusinszky - The Australian Weekend Review - The best in new Books - November 11, 1993 As testament to the esteem in which it is held this was the statement made by legendary football reporter Mike Sheahan in the 2017 Grand Final Record feature which asked leading AFL identities to nominate their favorite footy book of all time: "I use it every week when I'm preparing for Open Mike. It is my first reference point for the greats of the past and I am amazed at how much information there is and the level of detail. I remember something I saw about Mark Williams when he finished up playing years after he was dumped by Collingwood. He wrote a letter to Collingwood about an assistant coaching role there and got no reply. It showed me two things. The first was that he was prepared to move on and the second was that Collingwood had made this bloke captain and yet couldn't be bothered to give him a reply. I can't help but think how tedious it must have been to compile and the labour that went into it. I have a vested interest in this book because of the information it contains. There are all these tidbits that you need, such as height, weight and relatives and this book provides it. If my house ever caught fire once I made sure the kids and the valuables were safe, the next thing I would take with me is this book." A Major Collection of Speeches by Nobel Laureate, Jose Ramos‐Horta Includes a call‐to‐action on the key issues facing our world today The Twenty‐first Century offers us a chance, a unique chance, to coalesce around common global interests ‐ to reverse the nefarious consequences of climate change, manage clean water reserves that are becoming a rare commodity, save our polluted rivers, lakes, and seas, replenish the depleted fish stock, eliminate extreme poverty and hunger, and de‐escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula and South China Sea, and between India and Pakistan, India and China. If we were to spend less on armament, we would be able to spend more on education, health, and food security for all. These are matters of survival for all and yet, to date, there has not been enough understanding of the urgency of addressing these challenges. Words of Hope in Troubled Times is a collection of my speeches and writings from 1992 to 2017. I hope this book will inform, increase understanding, and inspire a sense of urgency, for only when these challenges are understood and felt by all, will there be concerted global action.

Author Information José Ramos‐Horta is an East Timorese politician who was the President of East Timor from 20 May 2007 to 20 May 2012. Previously he was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2006 and Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007. He is a co‐recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize.

Rick Hore‐Lacy, law‐student‐turned‐horse‐trainer who became an Aussie legend in the sport of horse racing. The outspoken larrikin caused a furor in the Elite horse racing industry by breaking conventions with his vociferous opinions and infamous actions. Told with uncompromising honesty, this is a tale that will take you to the inner sanctum of the 'Sport of Kings' and into the heaving action of the most exciting wins of his 20 Group‐One victories. A story that tells of criminal sabotage, crushing mistakes, outrageous success, and above all, indomitable Aussie spirit. "I regard Rick Hore‐Lacy as Australia's (and possibly, the world's) best judge of a yearling. He has proven that season on season, buying an extremely limited number and every year producing an outstanding runner. He is without peer in the sale ring. As a trainer, he was refreshingly unconventional and enjoyed some great successes." ‐ Gai Waterhouse "Rick Hore‐Lacy is a wonderful horseman with a great eye for picking a yearling who would turn in to a successful runner. We had a wonderful association over the years and a lot of luck with some outstanding horses like Redoute's Choice. It was an honour and a privilege to ride for him." ‐ Jim Cassidy (Pumper)

Author Information Rick Hore‐Lacy came from a privileged upbringing and attended some of Australia s top private schools. A second cousin to Kerry Packer, he bucked the tradition and stability of finishing a law degree and left in his final year to make his own way. With no horse‐racing pedigree to speak of, Rick took to developing his own unique style of training, and with his outspoken and honest nature, helped pave the way for some of the biggest changes in the racing industry in the last thirty years. He is one of the last true characters of the racing industry.

In Search of Ivy uncovers the fascinating story of the Lai family's immigration from China to Australia and their interaction with Aboriginals and Europeans making up the local Australian community. Part historical recreation, part detective fact-gathering, the book pieces together the past in a series of vignettes linking Canton (now Guangzhou) and Hong Kong with Cooktown and Thursday Island in Far North Queensland, bringing to life the colourful atmosphere of China and the famous Palmer River Gold Rush in the late nineteenth century. Through the eyes of the author, as she searches for the history of her mother Ivy - the inspiration behind both the family's journey and this book - the reader is invited to make the sometimes harrowing journey from one of the world's oldest cultures to a raw, new land, where the struggles of emergent multiculturalism are documented in painstaking and absorbing detail. A story of human courage, hard work and endurance in a strange land, it will resonate for anyone who has, at some stage, made a life-changing journey or dreams of doing so. 'If you are interested in history, memoir, or cultural and racial reconciliation, this book is for you!'

This book portrays a modern epic ‐ of an army that sailed across the world to fight a war. Its struggle with the Kaiserreich (German empire) became the most formidable campaign Australian troops have ever fought. By the time Monash's soldiers broke through the Hindenburg Line, their achievement and its cost were staggering. This epic was created by normal Australians, and is understandable to normal Australians. Here, you won't need expertise in military terminology. But to appreciate the titanic conflict the Diggers had entered, you'll find a clear picture of the Great War ‐ its key issues and extraordinary events. Before this book was written Australians could not get, in one concise volume, the two interwoven sagas ‐ of Australia's epic and the Great War itself. That's what this lively and vigorous book offers. It draws on the sources of thirteen countries to present as many good unknowns (women, men and fascinating situations) as it does big leaders, events, generals and battles. In debate it's not shackled to old predictables, and while mindful of general readers, it relies throughout on sound scholarship. For good measure, it bombards a few fallacies and their well‐overdue authors.

Author Information After some years as a teacher and academic, Bruce Gaunson became the West Europe political analyst at the Office of National Assessments (Canberra) during the Cold War’s final outcomes. His teaching career culminated in thirteen enjoyable years as Head of History at Sydney Grammar School. Kaiserreich is his third book.

Reprint This is the story of one woman who could be any woman: she could be you or your wife or your sister or your mother. She is given one diagnosis, one choice ‐ until the realisation sinks in: there are untold options, unlimited potential. At 52 Ariena feels there is a lot in her life to be thankful for: her loving husband and family, her beautiful grandson, her good health, until... overnight all this changes. A lump in her breast is diagnosed as a highly aggressive form of breast cancer and she is given 6 months to live. After the initial shock, Ariena questions the logic of the choices the medical profession is offering her and decides to take matters into her own hands. She makes radical changes to her lifestyle that lead to her being completely 'cured'. Raw Can Conquer Cancer is not a text book, not a how‐to manual, not a recipe book. It is, however, a highly thought provoking, inspirational story, revealing the recipe for life and living, and encouraging us to make choices born of a simple conscious thought.

Author Information In 2001, Janette Murray‐Wakelin was diagnosed with a highly aggressive carcinoma breast cancer and given 6 months to get her affairs in order. Unwilling to accept this sentence, Janette made radical changes to her lifestyle. Within 6 months she was given a clean bill of health and established a RAW Vegan Restaurant and Centre of Optimum Health in Canada. Ten years later she wrote Raw Can Conquer Cancer. Janette currently lives in Australia and in 2013, Janette and her partner (both 60+ years) will be running around the country, 15,500 km, 365 marathons in 365 days, to inspire and motivate conscious lifestyle choices.

So many places to visit, so many delicious things to eat. Where to start, in a strange, new city? These nifty guides take visitors through the potentially bewildering process of finding authentic eats, across a variety of destinations. With a focus on what to eat, as much as where to eat, IN 12 DISHES will appeal to food-centric travellers who desire meaningful dining experiences across the gamut. The core assumption is that travellers want to plunge headfirst into local staples - iconic dishes that define a place. They want pad thai in Bangkok, bun cha in Hanoi, pao mo in Xi'an, shojin ryori in Kyoto and assam laksa in Penang. But...where to find the best? Highlighting12 must-eat dishes, with meaty information on where to find them, there's more than enough to give travellers the food heads-up. Murder down under. The car lies wrecked and abandoned near the world's longest fence, the "rabbit‐proof fence" in the wheat belt of Western Australia. There is no sign of its owner. Has George Loftus simply decamped, for reasons of his own? Or was it murder? Bonaparte suspects the worst and is determined to find the body ‐ and the murderer. 'This novel is filled with Upfield's own philosophy about what creates murderers. When Bonaparte sets out to investigate two bizarre murders near the dusty little outback town of Carie, all the odds are against him. The crimes were committed a year before, the scent cold, and any clues that may have survived have been confused by a ham‐fisted city policeman. As Bony follows the trail he is first threatened and then attacked by the mysterious murderer. It's a case that will tax his ingenuity to the limit... if he lives to see it through. 'Excellent set up for a story, good cast of characters, perplexing confusion of suspects, and perceptive unravelling of tangled threads.' ‐ Kirkus Review

This first story of Inspector Bonaparte takes him to the Darling River bush country where he encounters those problems he understands so well ‐ mixed blood and divided loyalties. 'Rampageous fisticuffs, rough scenery and rougher, dust‐ covered sheepmen and wanderers, dignified aboriginals, and so much interest and local colour.' ‐ Books and Bookmen

Why had Luke Marks driven specially out to Windee? Had he been murdered or had he, as the local police believed, wandered away from his car and been overwhelmed in a dust‐ storm? When Bony noticed something odd in the background of a police photograph, he begins to piece together the secrets of the sands of Windee. Here is the original background to the infamous Snowy Rowles murder trial. 'Napoleon Bonaparte my best detective.' ‐ Daily Mail

The discovery of a stolen red monoplane on the dry, flat bottom of Emu Lake meant many things for different folks. For Elizabeth Nettlefold, the chance to nurse its strangely ill meant renewed purpose in life. For Dr Knowles, brilliant physician and town drunk, it meant the revival of a romantic dream. For some it meant a murder plan gone awry, and for Bonaparte, it meant one of the toughest cases of his career. 'Bony ‐ a unique figure among top‐flight detectives.' ‐ BBC

Across the gloomy, empty dining room of the old Hotel Panorama, Katmandu, an elderly woman sits alone. Her toast and marmalade might have been a clue as to her nationality, but, convinced she is a German, the callow Australian sitting two table away greets her in what he assumes is her native tongue... She replies to his "Guten Morgen' in ringing Home Countries English. 'Good Morning, young man', following that revelation with an invitation to join her to take tea. Her name, which he hears imperfectly, is either 'Pritichard' or 'Prichett', but she quickly tells him that people usually address her as Mrs P. She is, she explains, from Yorkshire and is almost halfway through her annual, solo pilgrimage to India, to buy a good supply of tea in Darjeeling. This year, 1971, she has decided to spend a couple of days exploring Katmandu and surrounds on foot. The young Australian and his partner are on their way from Melbourne to the University of York. Fate and a bus crash sees these three Yorkshire bound travellers unexpectedly sharing railway compartments, local buses, and other public transport as they make their way towards Europe following the Hippie Trail. As they traverse countries such as Afghanistan and Iran ‐ dangerous places, then and now ‐ Mrs P relates harrowing, hair raising, often hilarious accounts of her past adventures. This is the story of a brief, surprising companionship. …It is obvious that this very British woman and her storytelling and wisdom has had a lasting and profound impact on the author. It is a humorous and engaging story with Mrs P popping up in all manner of places and on the same transport as the author, a companion on the journey, offering both insights into her lived experiences and sage advice… - Frances Wilson This beautiful account of travel and adventure on the Hippie Trail before mobile phones or screens of any kind, reminds us of the old saying ‘travel truly does broaden the mind’. So put down that screen, read Jeff Brownrigg’s book and find your own adventure. - Alex Sloan (Canberran of the Year 2017, ABC Canberra radio presenter)

Genocide in the African country of Sontaria causes a surge of escaping refugees to seek sanctuary in neighbouring Namola. In Namola, The Fund uses all its resources to build a state‐of‐ the‐art facility and to move the refugees from their disease ridden camp on the border. However, President for Life Joseph Lattua has other plans for the new encampment and evicts the refugees, moving his brother's army into the quarters. Justine Small and her fellow board members must regain control of their camp or many more refugees will die. They recruit exiled Namolan surgeon Daniel Zibu and convince him to return to the country of his birth in order to defeat Lattua's army and oust the tyrant. Without an army, can The Fund and Zibu succeed in their wild scheme, and who will be made to pay the ultimate price? Who will the moon goddess Mawu smile upon?

When Dan Travers is faced with the prospect of losing his job in humiliating circumstances, and possibly going to jail, he makes a desperate choice. A choice that will affect not only his future but will have dire repercussions for all those around him. How did this dedicated surfer and family man find himself in such a dilemma? Why would he contemplate such a wild scheme? Bombings and murders in Bali combine with drug wars on the streets of Sydney to draw Dan ever deeper into the hell he created with a few simple words. Once the choice has been made how can Dan return to a normal life, and who will be made to pay the price for his foolishness?

Team spirit is the vital element that can turn a well-trained crew into champions. The crews of the Henswytch Rowing Club know all about team spirit and how powerful it can be, but how far should they go? What lengths are they willing to go to for their fellow crewmen? Former commando Tom Briggs is introduced to the fanatical spirit of the club and must decide whether to submit or rebel, while property developer Jim Sutton, with his 'green' ideas, sets himself on a crash course with the power of the Old Codgers. Who will survive the clash?

Have you read the Bible? From cover to cover? From Genesis to Revelation? It would seem that few of us have. Not even devout Christians, or those you'd think would be required to read the whole Bible - like a nun who, when browsing through a copy of When God Speaks for Himself burst out, horrified: "That's not true! Those verses aren't in the Bible!" To prove it, she opened the Bible - only to discover that she was wrong. How can this be? It turns out that what most people "know" about God, Jesus and what the Bible says is the abridged, saccharine version of the "Word of God." No wonder, then, that most Christians are astonished to learn that, when "God speaks for himself," he uses words you'll never hear in church or Sunday School: -Gruesome, bloodthirsty massacres ordered by God - Bible passages that will make your stomach churn; -Bible passages that say the exact opposite of another Bible passage, sometimes in two consecutive verses! -Bible passages that contradict what you "know": Jesus was born in Bethlehem - wasn't he? (Page 35). And he gave his Sermon on the Mount on the mount, right? (Page 13). And of courseDavid killed Goliath with a slingshot (didn't he? - see page 40); -Obvious inconsistencies about the Virgin Birth, Original Sin, and other central tenets of Christianity - to which the churches' only possible answer is: "have faith"; -Simple questions about such Bible favorites as the Creation, the Flood and Noah's Ark that make Cinderella and The Three Little Pigs seem far more realistic; -Plus: extracts from official church documents, some kept hidden for centuries, including the actual words of the Inquisition's reasoning and verdict on Galileo; a collection of pointed and often hilarious quotes and comments from skeptics and believers from all over the world...and much more. In sum, in When God Speaks for Himself you'll find the answers to dozens of questions you simply would not have been allowed to ask in church or Sunday School. WARNING! This book contains lewd and graphic scenes of sex, incest, violence, murder, rape, cannibalism (including the eating of babies), and massacres that some people may find offensive. But they're all from the Holy Bible, so it's okay to share them with your children. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

A low risk investment you can virtually buy and forget as with Starbucks when it listed: $1,000 invested then is now worth $201,901.18‐a return of 202 times your money Yet. .. such profits are typical of hot growth companies. But how can you spot the next Starbucks, Whole Foods, Walmart, or McDonalds from the hundreds of turkeys that go public every year? And how can you avoid companies touted as the "Next Starbucks" or the "Next Google" which crash and burn soon after they hit one of the big stock exchanges? There's a science to the "Next Big Thing" strategy, and Mark Tier understands it. He shows you that explosive brands like Starbucks, Whole Foods, McDonald's, and Walmart didn't become successful by accident. Through in‐depth and accessible case studies, Tier pulls back the curtain on the early Key Performance Indicators that each of these major companies showed even in their earliest stages. Grasp these foundations of success and you, too, will be able to spot the next Starbucks. Tier even shows how you, as an "average‐investor‐in‐the‐street," can find such a hot growth stock‐without leaving the comfort of your own home. You'll also discover‐ ‐ Two ways you could spot the next Starbucks by "just walking around" ‐ Three simple indicators you can use to cross the "Next Turkey" off your list

Warren Buffett and George Soros both started with nothing‐and made billion‐dollar fortunes solely by investing. But their investment strategies are so widely divergent, what could they possibly have in common? As Mark Tier demonstrates in this insightful book, the secrets that made Buffett and Soros the world's richest investors are the same mental habits and strategies they both practice religiously. However, these are mental habits and strategies that fly in the face of Wall Street's conventional mindset. For example: ‐ Buffett and Soros do not diversify. When they buy, they always buy as much as they can. ‐ They're not focused on the profits they expect to make. Going in, they're not investing for the money at all. ‐ They don't believe that big profits involve big risks. In fact, they're far more focused on not losing money than making it. ‐ Wall Street research reports? They never read them. They're not interested in what other people think. Indeed, Buffett says he only reads analyst reports when he needs a laugh. In The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett & George Soros you can discover how the mental habits that guided your last investment decision stack up against those of the world's richest investors. Then learn exactly how you can apply their wealth‐building secrets to transform your own investment results .

forage cookbook

This cookbook is a live letter to the state of Victoria. With the valuable support of over 80 top chefs, cooks, restaurants, producers and other food folk sharing their recipes and stories of farm to plate, this book captures a snapshot of the food industry as it is right now; a celebration of excellence and inspiration. Forage has criss‐crossed the state of Victoria on an epic 3,000 km road trip visiting the people and places that make this state's culinary scene one of the world's most diverse and exciting. Your copy of Forage has the added benefit of sharing the spoils with local charity Upside Nepal, supporting subsistence farmers to develop their own enterprises that will benefit their remote villages in Nepal. Forage is an initiative born from our time in Nepal, where we were inspired by the strong connection between the subsistence farmers, their food and the land that provides it. We want to share this land to plate connection with the Australian people, and in turn, through partnership with Australian charity Upside Nepal, support village development through agriculture enterprise in Nepal. The profits from Forage Victoria will be split with Upside Nepal with the aim of contributing $100K to incubating social enterprise in Nepal. Look up the definition of 'to forage' and you'll see that it's meaning is, 'to search widely for food or provisions.' Synonyms for foraging might include 'rummaging', 'scouring the countryside', 'scrounging', 'hunting for', 'picking', 'to look high and low' and 'to leave no stone unturned', and as you'll see it is just that the chefs featured in this beautiful book are engrossed in. They may not all be mad enough like me to stand knee deep in a local icy (but reliably pristine) stream harvesting watercress, or to tip toe around suspicious bulls for access to the best crop of stinging nettles. But no matter whether they are harvesting their own plantings, sourcing the best heirloom varieties from a farmer, revising their menus on a daily basis based on produce availability, discussing the best time of year to use beets for borscht, crossing town in search of a rumoured new supplier, sharing the name of (in their opinion) the best purveyor of octopus, or creating a product themselves from the ground up using time-honoured techniques, we all share in a common discourse. It's always about sourcing or creating the best. - Alla Wolf Tasker AM, Lake House Daylesford Grove Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

In the 1860's in the Colony of Victoria, Tabu an aborigine goes 'walkabout' after a violent tribal fight during which his brother is killed. He rescues the wife of a drover/farmer ‐ Michael, who is an escaped Convict. He hires Tabu, to help him drove sheep into the mainly unexplored northern districts of Victoria to the Murray River. Only a few hardy explorers and drovers had previously been through this country when bringing stock overland from Sydney to Melbourne. Their droving encounters many difficulties, crossing several rivers ‐ bushfires ‐ floods ‐ theft of sheep and aborigine conflict. Parallel family stories involve an aborigine battle ‐ wild dog attacks ‐ water rights and attempted piracy. The Novel also includes other tales involving their family's trial and tribulations, bordering on truth and fiction. The Author's knowledge of Australian history has helped him interweave tales of early settlers and aboriginal lifestyles to bring together significant events that occurred within Michael's and Tabu's family. The Colony's scenery and unique animals are also vividly described, together with a surprising conclusion for Michael. Collectively these descriptions have helped to complete an exciting must read story 'Of days gone by' and will be of interest to all readers, and will increase the knowledge of students of Australian History.

The story is set in the 1850s and begins in County Clare, Ireland. A young Irishman Michael Keogh, a shipwright, returns home to assist Edmund, his father in his small farm. Simultaneously, a wealthy British Army Officer, John Hall, arrives at a posting in the town of Kilrush, County Clare. Both eventually travel to Australia in the eventful 1850s, together with an erratic and devious Colonel Paul Lang. The picturesque Clare country side becomes the backdrop to the dramatic death of a vicious Constable and brings Michael to the attention of the authorities. During this time Michael helps an Irish rebel, Brendan Devlin, to escape to America. Later Brendan would repay this favour to Michael. A concurrent story also occurs in Clare. During an eviction of a poor farmer, Michael is arrested charged and sentenced to seven years transportation to Van Diemen's Land. During Michael's arrest, Irish National treasures are confiscated by Colonel Lang, the devious Commanding Officer of John Hall's regiment. John Hall is made responsible for the Irish treasures. Colonel Paul Lang's son Frederick steals the treasures. Colonel Lang charges John Hall with dereliction of duty. Both are to resign. John Hall develops a romantic interest in Michael Keogh's sister Mauve. Michael has a rough and eventful sea voyage to Hobart and is then shipped to Port Arthur. A shipwright, he is employed in the boat building yard. His prison ordeals highlight the penal system at that time. He and fellow convict, Seamus Lynch, escape from Port Arthur. They learn shearing, change their names and become itinerant shearers working along the Tasmanian coast and soon obtain passage to Victoria. Over the centuries the Faerie Realms have drifted away from the mortal world. But for some, the Doors will open. For some, there is a Way to travel there, if they want it badly enough. If they dream it hard enough. In this era, only lovers, poets, and madmen can access the Realms of the Land‐and for good reason. A succession of mortals travel to Faerie: a veteran seeking beauty; a magus seeking power; an urchin seeking his wayward father; an engineer seeking meaning. These mortals bring the horrors of our age to the Land, and the Folk who live there respond in kind.

Available Now Hero is a black puppy of uncertain breed, the runt of a litter born in a severe storm. He was frightened of almost everything from the time he was little. Although at first not keen to do so, Ned's parents allow him to keep the little puppy as his special pet. Ned names his new pet Hero in the hope that he will live up to his name but to no avail. Hero runs away in a storm and meets some homeless men who rename him as he has lost his collar. Hero especially befriends one of the men. Hero's owners did not give up looking for him and finally did so in a surprising way. Hero's plight leads the homeless man to reassess his own life. Ned's love for Hero is demonstrated in an unexpected way when he makes a momentous decision regarding the future of his beloved pet.

Author Information After having worked as a stenographer, bank teller and clerical and administration officer, Sybil Rowlands is now a retiree. She is married with grown‐up children and has completed her Business degree as a mature age student. She is also involved with various singing groups and church groups and activities. Sybil originally began to write a story about her daughter's dog but ended up writing Rain Dog which is completely fictitious. After writing the story Sybil began to read articles in the newspapers of dogs that had run away in storms, so knew she had the right story line. Also, the plight of homeless folk has long saddened her but Sybil didn't know how to help them in their situation.

INTRODUCING THE ‘KIDS LIGHT UP’ CHILDREN’S BOOK SERIES

The ‘Shining with Light’ series has been written for young children in a way that captures a child’s sense of wonder and learning, encapsulated in fun rhyme and story telling. The stories develop life skills such as friendship and social skills that children can relate to and put into practice in their everyday lives and experiences. In this series our helper-light is depicted through a star on the chest of our friend Stellar Bear. ‘Stellar’ means constellation or star. Stars shine with light and are unique just as we are unique. When we turn on our light our true qualities can shine through. The star reflects the emotions of Stellar, and whispers trusting and true solutions when things go wrong. The star is our companion, our problem solver, our helper to make things right. There will be 10 books in the series with the first four to be released in March, 2018 Skills, qualities and values that are covered in each of the books: JOY - It’s a choice that we make to be happy! This story is set on the Spring Range hills. It is told in verse: "From the valley came a clanging and a noisy ballyhoo, strange metallic thumpings, with a yell of glee woo‐hoo" ‐ Turbie arrives and makes friends with the local wildlife. A dreadful bushfire rages through the hills. The characters carry out selfless acts of bravery. You'll have to read it to find out what happens to our brave heroes.

Author Information Jenny Morris has lived in the bush at Spring Range of N.S.W. (just north of the A.C.T. border), for 34 years. She was born in Gibraltar and her British Army father was further posted to Germany and Cyprus, eventually settling back in the UK on the family farm. She met her Australian husband in a pub in South Wales and she has lived in Australia for 43 years. (She's almost a local!) Jenny is a retired public servant who has always enjoyed reading and writing rhyme. Even more so now, with grandchildren to delight. Sara Hayat is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Melbourne, Australia. She worked with watercolour, ink , pencil and computer to bring The Thing on Mount Spring alive, interpreting the Australian bush and its creatures in vibrant colour. This is her first children's book.

'Love goes out. Love goes in. DING' There are so many wonderful ways to express love, and this sweet and thoughtful book explores some of the best!

Author Information A very long time ago in the magical land of Zambia, Karen Herft was born to a brilliantly hilarious man and one of the kindest and most thoughtful women that ever walked the earth. Along the way she was accompanied on her journey by four fair maidens, sisters for life who always know how to listen with no judgement and laugh like there's no tomorrow. Karen's writing days really started at boarding school. In between climbing trees, being chased by cows and swimming in mud pools she never stopped creating stories – if not on paper then in her mind. It was not long after that she traveled to Sri Lanka, the land of her ancestors, and after a few years of getting to know the mother land she trekked (hopped on a plane) and set her weary feet on the shores of the land they call Australia. It was here in this beautiful land that she met her Prince Charming, Sir James the 4th, a.k.a best friend, changed her name to Buultjens and had two little princes who are of course the inspiration for her book, Love Jar. Love Jar tells the tale of what Karen has learnt in her life from all these wonderful people; that love comes in so many different forms. Some people like to show love through words and others through actions. It doesn't matter how it is shown as long as we don't miss that someone is giving us love, even if it isn't in a way that is familiar to us.

Wedge‐tailed eagles mate for life, so when her mate does not return from a hunting trip, Elvira is in despair. Although anxious to set out immediately to find him, she is faced with a problem: she has three eggs due to hatch any day and they can't be left unattended. Never daunted, she comes up with a novel 'baby‐sitting' plan which enables her to leave the nest and set off on a quest to find the missing eagle.

Author Information Pat's desire to share her love of the Australian bush resulted in her first book The Magic Forest of Goonoo. The success of this book encouraged her to continue writing and six more books have now cemented her reputation as a popular children's author. Her collaboration with talented Narrabri artist Graeme Compton has resulted in producing books that are loved by both children and adults alike and Pat hopes will encourage awareness of our precious wildlife and our unique Australian environment. Growing up in rural Australian bushland has given Graeme a native sense of its nature. Having listened to tales of Yowies and Bunyips since childhood, and lived with kangaroos and possums in the paddocks and the roofs, cockatoos, magpies, eagles and all of the wild birds - and goannas - nesting in the treetops; along with the farmyard chooks being troubled by sneaky foxes, he feels a deep affinity with Pat's tales. From the first moment of talking to Pat and then reading her rib-tickling, heart-warming stories, Graeme has enjoyed their collaboration. Amongst his many artistic pursuits and achievements, illustrating Pat's stories is one of his favourites.

Evan's turning seven on Sunday and he has some brilliant ideas to make his birthday party spectacular! His plans are so brilliant, that none of his friends believe him. Evan is worried. Will any of them come to his party?

Author Information Robyn was born in Townsville and she was raised in small Queensland country towns. There were no cinemas or television and so books, creative play, exploration and daydreams filled her world. Her love of books and reading has been with her all her life, but five years ago she had an experience that set her on the path to her latest, greatest passion: writing. As a Pyjama Angel with the Pyjama Foundation reading to children in foster care, she discovered the extraordinary power of children’s picture books one afternoon. One small book changed the world of a little five-year-old boy who realised, for the first time, that he could read. The book was Hug by Jez Alborough. Robyn now lives in Brisbane with her husband and their black and white moggy, Jazzie. They have two sons and four grandchildren. Evan’s Turning Seven is Robyn’s first children’s picture book, which tells the story of a small boy brimming with unbelievably brilliant, birthday ideas. She is a member of the Queensland Writer’s Centre, Write Links and Share Your Story Australia. Aleksandra Szmidt grew up in a town in the south of Poland and currently resides in New Zealand. In Poland, she worked as a graphic designer. Upon moving she decided to pursue her dream as a freelance illustrator. From her home studio, Aleksandra creates one-of-a-kind artwork for clients across the world. Her love of drawing plants and animals is attributed to her landscape architecture studies. However, she prefers to design magical things often detached from reality. The majority of her artwork is traditionally created with watercolor, gouache, colored pencil. She also uses computer program like Photoshop. She loves her job and it brings her immense joy and an emotional connection to her artwork. Sound Stories: Robbie Robot to the Rescue is the second in a series of four books to help children learn phonemic awareness. Through stunningly detailed illustrations from Sarah Hardy, and clever and engaging stories from teacher and wordsmith, Barbara Murray, children will have a joyful introduction to phonemic awareness and synthetic phonics.

Author Information Barbara Murray was a primary school teacher for many years before she began writing Sound Waves, a Whole School Phonemic Approach to Reading and Spelling in 2000. The program is now widely used across Australia and in some schools overseas. Teaching was her passion, and a phonemic approach featured daily in all her classes across the whole primary school. She loved developing a curiosity about language in her students. Today, the third edition of Sound Waves includes an amazing, interactive website set up by her publisher, Firefly Education, that provides schools with a huge range of games, activities, teaching ideas and support, as well as the original student activity books and teacher resource books. A phonemic approach to literacy is based on the 43 sounds we use in Australian spoken English. The very first step is to introduce the 43 sounds to beginning readers and writers. Barbara is now publishing 43 stories illustrated by Sarah Hardy and compiled by Little Steps, for teachers and parents to introduce the 43 sounds to young children. These stories will be spread across a set of four beautifully illustrated books, Sound Stories. The kind of art that sparks the imagination. The kind of art that is the stuff of dreams. The kind of art that inspires boys and girls, and adults too. The kind of art that is whimsical, quirky and so unique you want to embrace it and make it yours. In short, much applauded artist, Sarah Hardy produces the kind of art that connects human hearts. Even her company name, PopcornBlue conjures up images that delight the imagination, and Sarah just loves to produce art in various formats, from high quality archival art prints, to magnets, stickers, cards and original artworks. As a senior graphic designer and illustrator, Sarah is a seasoned professional with the requisite experience to hone her craft well and truly under her belt and has a strong artistic track record behind her. Shortlisted in 2012 for the Arc National Drawing Prize (Snail Civilisation), Sarah has also won the People’s Choice Awards and Inaugural Prize (Eltham Community Gallery) 2011, and was highly commended in the Illustrators Australian & NZ Awards (2015). She won the 1st Prize in the Fairfield Art4All show in 2016. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

The only role you have to play, is that of my SWEET CHILD. You Could Have Been... is a tribute to a little life gone too soon. In Australia, 6 babies are stillborn every day, and 1 in 4 women experience early pregnancy loss. It's so special to have a bond with your baby, even after they have died. This book lets you talk to your baby about your lost hopes and dreams, but most importantly, your love.

Author Information Ann-Maree Imrie lives in Sydney with her husband and their second-born son. She practised as a Social Worker for 10 years with children, young people and families, including grief and bereavement work. Sharing in people’s stories of love and loss was very special to her, but she didn’t realise the full impact of grief and its heartbreak until she was forced to live through the death of her first son. He was stillborn on 31st January 2015. Ann-Maree has always had a passion for writing, and having her first son has propelled her to not only write, but to actually share it with other people. Ann-Maree had two articles published by Mamamia. Morrie Schwartz's quote, 'Death ends a life, not a relationship' resonates with her experience, which she poured out in her first book You Could Have Been. She hopes that this book is a special way for bereaved parents, including those who suffer early pregnancy loss, to continue a relationship with their child that they are unable to hold in their arms. Zheng is a Chinese-Kiwi-Australian illustrator with a passion for visual storytelling. His works range in animation, film, and publishing. He loves history, video games and binge watching Pixar and Studio Ghibli movies. You can follow his art on Instagram: @zqu_art.

Baby is clean, dry and ready for bed. Families around the world settle their children to sleep in many ways, and this magical lullaby will become a treasured part of baby's bedtime routine. 'Hush little baby, please don't cry.'

Author Information Natalie Mooney grew up in Adelaide and now lives in stunning Far North Queensland. She has travelled Australia and the world, lived in Japan, studied ecotourism, primary school education and currently psychology. Working as a tour guide at Uluru and on Fraser Island heightened her love for the natural world. Working as a school teacher combined her love of the environment with the passion for enriching young minds, and then having two young children of her own inspired the birth of her first picture book, Please Don’t Cry. She believes we all know how great it is to read to children, so why not start from birth? They may tear a few pages, wriggle around and even leave the room, but there’s nothing to lose and so much to gain by spending precious time every day sharing the magic found inside every book. In her spare time she can be found with her family exploring beaches and rainforests, gardening or folding a bottomless-pit of laundry.

This diverse group of criminals varied from 'gentlemen' to outright psychopaths, from hold‐up merchants to murderers. The book relates how their very diverse circumstances drove them into lives of crime and celebrity status among the colonial population. Bushrangers were a handful of fugitives, living on their wits, who came to epitomise the Australian spirit of rebellion.

The vast archipelago that makes up Indonesia is a combination of many cultures, lifestyles, ethnic mixes and religions. Islands such as Java, Sumatra and Bali have witnessed the rise and fall of many kingdoms as well as European colonial rule. This is the story of Indonesia from ancient times, through the era of kingdoms, into the centuries of Dutch colonial control and the fight for independence to create the republic we know today. It is a story of monumental egos, corruption, militarism, and a struggle to create a cohesive nationalism. This is Indonesia: The Story of the Nation. Immigration Since 1788 Author

As well as being the world's largest democracy, India is rapidly growing into an economic colossus. This is the story of centuries of conflict and empire building, of invasion and conquest, of religious innovation and turmoil. It also shows how a small group of British businessmen intent on international trade came to control millions of people through belief in their own racial superiority. Included are details of government, transport, communications, faiths, the environment and a full range of statistics. This is India: The Story of the Nation. Immigrants Who Changed Australia

This is the story of three powerful dynasties ‐ Yuan, Ming and Qing ‐ that ruled China from 1271 to 1911. They comprised all‐powerful families who had claimed the 'Mandate of Heaven' as their God‐given right to rule. The quality of their leadership varies enormously, from accomplished military commanders to child‐Emperors manipulated by the adults around them. Whoever was in control, the people of China were never given any say. In this book we see how a succession of Emperors moulded China's character until the final collapse of the Imperial system in 1911. How Communications United Australia ‐ Australian

Australia today is a nation created by immigrants. Other than the indigenous peoples, every Australian is an immigrant or is descended from an immigrant. From the moment the first English, Irish, Scots and Welsh stepped ashore at Sydney Cove in January 1788, Australia's history, its institutions, its wealth and its achievements have been made by immigrants. This is the story of the people who made the perilous journey to a new land and a new life. At first the immigrants had little choice in the matter ‐ they were sent by a court. Later, the brave free settlers plunged into life in a harsh new environment unlike anything they knew.

Here are the many and varied stories of immigrants who came to Australia, became successful and, mostly, contributed to the development of the nation. This book is about hard work, dedication and cunning that overcame setbacks large and small. This special group used their talents to succeed in architecture, crime feminism, government, industry, medicine, military strategy, transport and many more fields. These are the Immigrants Who Changed Australia.

Effective communications have been vital to the development of Australia, from the first telegraph lines to the National Broadband Network, from sea mail to email. In this book we show how telegraphy and Morse code created links between towns, colonies and overseas destinations, and how they reduced and eventually ended the 'tyranny of distance'. This is the story of postal services across Australia; the growth of the telegraph; and the advent of the telephone, the teleprinter, telex, fax and email, from 1788 to today.

No other mineral can excite the world in the way gold does. In 1851 gold was discovered near Bathurst in New South Wales setting off a series of gold rushes that attracted fortune seekers from around the world. When the rush spread to the infant colony of Victoria the continent was transformed. Here we see how the power of the pastoralists and squatters was broken by a new class of people whose wealth was not based on landholdings or an accident of birth. This is the story of how gold changed the face of the Australian colonies to build a new and prosperous nation.

European Colonialism in the Asia Pacific

Faith, religion, belief ‐ whatever you prefer to call it ‐has been a part of the Australian landscape since ancient times. Today it continues as a core part of Australian society. Although Christanity is the largest faith, there are many, many more making up our national character. As well as other major religions, including Islam and Judaism, there are the smaller groups such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Baha'i, down to the tiny groups like Rastafari, Jainism and Zoroastrianism. Some are centred on an all‐powerful, all‐ seeing, all‐knowing God; others are based on lifestyle philosophies that lead to a state of 'holiness'.

Australia Year by Year ‐ 1788 To 1809

The Europeans who stepped ashore on 26 January 1788 knew next to nothing about the land that was to be their home. Almost immediately they began to explore the region around Sydney Cove, pushing further and further out, uncovering the rich agricultural lands and the hostile, barren landscapes. They found their way across the Great Dividing Range to the vast plains where their sheep would flourish and their crops would grow in abundance. Following closely behind the explorers were the settlers. These were hardy pioneers, each desperate to carve out their own slice of the new colonies.

From the 1500s to the 1900s the peoples, nations, kingdoms, sultanates and tribes of the Asia‐Pacific were seen as fair game for colonialisation by European empires. From tiny Pacific islands like Niue to the vastness of Australia and India, almost nowhere was immune from the attention of European explorers, traders and missionaries. This book shows how colonialism began in the pursuit of trade by the Portuguese, and expanded into a rush for territory that peaked in the 19th century with Britain ruling over a vast territory, taking what was seen as 'civilisation' to these ancient lands. Natural Disasters

The first 22 years of the colonisation of Australia were tumultuous ones. They began with the arrival of the First Fleet and ended with the aftermath of the only military insurrection Australia has ever experienced. This book covers all the major events ‐the arrival at Botany Bay, the settlement at Sydney Cove, the battle to survive, heroic explorations, and tensions between the new arrivals and indigenous peoples. It also shows how the military officers charged with guarding the colony turned to corruption and greed and became a law unto themselves, destroying the careers of successive governors. Australia's Railways

In the 21st century China will become one of the most powerful nations on the planet. Far‐reaching economic reforms put in place by Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s turned China from a struggling Communist bureaucracy into the economic powerhouse of today. This is China, from its earliest history ‐ the Imperial dynasties, constant wars to gain and hold power, the rise of philosophers Confucius and Tao, the arrival of the Europeans, tea and opium and isolationism.

Natural disasters ‐ cyclones, bushfires, floods and many other occurrences ‐ are part of everyday life in Australia. This book shows the impact of disasters on humans, animals and the environment, and demonstrates ways to cope with them and to minimise their effects. The growing concern of climate change is also covered, with examples of how it is affecting disasters and what new disasters it may generate in the future. We also see the ways in which governments and emergency services react in times of natural disaster, whether with financial aid or human resources. This is the story of Australia's natural disasters and the many ways we can respond to them.

From their very earliest days in the 1850s railways provided a much safer, more comfortable, efficient form of transport. They swiftly captured the imagination of the public, the planners and the politicans who would expand them across the six colonies bringing a speed of communication unheard of in Australia previously. This is the story of how railway tracks rapidly expanded to all but the most remote parts of the continent. It shows how railway lines linked many places where they made no economic sense, but also forged connections that improved life for everyone in city or town.

From tiny Pitcairn to much larger New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, Australia's Pacific neighbours are a widely varying group of landscapes, cultures, peoples and histories. This book tells their stories from earliest times through the French, German, British and American colonial eras to, for some, independence and beyond. It is a chronicle of inter‐tribal hostilities, of arrogant European colonialism, of cultural and economic successes and failures. Every one of these has its own special story. These are Australia's Pacific Neighbours.

The Cold War was a battle for hearts and minds, between free market capitalism and Communism, a confrontation between the two post-World War II superpowers: the USA and the Soviet Union. This is the story of how Australia, in a frantic search for defence security, threw in its lot with the United States in Korea and Vietnam and with the British in Malaya. It tells of the paranoid, but totally unfounded, fear of Communist China sweeping south to conquer a defenceless Australia. Successive Australian conservative governments sent?Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen to anti-Communist conflicts that mostly ended is stalemate or humiliating defeat.

Australia s Aviation ‐ Linking The Nation

The role Australia plays on the international scene is greater than many people realise. Australia is a member of a wide range of international organisations. At the top of the list is the United Nations, of which Australia was a founding member in 1945. The nation also participates in most UN programs and specialised agencies such as UNICEF, UNESCO and the World Health Organization. Then there are the commitments to global security through intelligence sharing and gathering. Australia's defence forces are regularly committed to peacekeeping and peacemaking duties. Diplomatic activities are carried out by a network of embassies and high commissions. Australia at the Time of Federation

Australia's democratic heritage dates back centuries, tracing its roots to Magna Carta.Other refinements were brought about by the American and French Revolutions and the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution. As Britain's elite power structures began to break down, Australia became a world leader in opening up democracy to everyone, adopting the secret ballot and giving every adult the right to vote and stand for parliament. The heart of Australian democracy is the Constitution. It controls how government, the courts and the Parliament interact, and how laws are passed and maintained in the federal system.

The vast open spaces of Australia may never have been conquered without the aeroplane. This is the story of the visionaries and daredevils who put their money and their lives on the line in pursuit of the dream of air travel. They built Australia's airline industry to link the nation, to defy geography and develop communication unknown to earlier generations. We see the rise of icons such as Qantas, of monoliths such as ANA, upstarts like Ansett, Guinea, BAT and MMA, and the groundbreaking innovations of TAA. All these are driven by names such as Fysh, McGinness, Brearley, Holyman, Levien, Robinson, Ansett, Butler, Miller, and the team that created TAA.

Federation was the time when Australia changed from being six separate colonies to a united Commonwealth. On 1 January 1901 the entire country celebrated the new beginning. This is the story of the Australia that boasted one of the highest living standards in the world. Racism infected many things the new Commonwealth did; however, on the positive side, women already had the vote in South Australia, a right that would soon extend to all. From politics to war, living and entertaining, working, travelling and shopping, this is Australia at the time of Federation.

This is the story of Australia's economic development from the arrival of the First Fleet to today's post‐industrial society. From the near‐bankruptcy of the early convict days, follow the currency difficulties and the use of rum to finance infrastructure. As the dominance of wool is displaced, New South Wales and Victoria grow wealthy on gold. The long boom follows, then depression, recession, and days when it seemed the good times would never end. Over 200‐plus years, Australia has become one of the world's strongest economies.

This is the forty‐six years in which Australia evolved from a ramshackle penal colony into a substantial colonial presence, from the visionary Macquarie era to the beginning of the end of transportation. This book covers all the major events from Macquarie's first days when corruption was steadily brought under control, the development of substantial infrastructure, the breaking down of class structures, widespread exploration and land settlement, the creation of South?Australia, Port Phillip and Western Australia, and the heroic battles to end convict transportation. World War 11 ‐ Defending Australia ‐ Australian

The story of modern Australia's beginnings is inextricably linked to 160 000 people who came to the land as convicts. Here we see how a nation was founded not on free settlement or immigration but by criminal offenders who were transported to a 'land beyond the sea' where many went on to create new lives for themselves. Follow the story of greed, brutality, inhumanity, and occasional decency as a small group of people learn to cope with an environment utterly alien to them. This is how Australia grew into a prosperous nation from the cheap labour of so many hapless convicts who had little say in their destiny. World War 1

The Australian states came into being as six colonies of the British Empire. Between 1788 and today they evolved into an integral part of the Commonwealth of Australia. This book follows the development of the individual states from their colonial beginnings to today. We examine the way each colony gained self‐government and how each eventually agreed to become part of a federal Australia. The often confusing relationship between the Commonwealth, the individual states and Britain is explained and we see how each state remained, legally, a colony until 1986. World War II ‐ the greatest conflict Australia has ever experienced, and the only war that united almost all the population in the effort to win. This is the story of how, for Australia, World War II began as a battle far away and turned into one that brought war to the shores of the nation. Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen fought for the defence of Britain in Europe, the Middle East and north Africa from the moment war was declared in 1939. Then, in late 1941, the focus of our conflict moved close to home as the Japanese juggernaut rolled across Asia and the Pacific. T

Why People Live Where They Do ‐ Australian Society

World War I ‐ the bloody conflict that saw more than 60 000 Australians die in defence of the British Empire and create the legend that has influenced Australia's fighting spirit ever since. This is the story of how Australia unquestioningly entered a conflict on the opposite side of the world. It is a chronicle of great bravery when poorly trained and naive young men went to a war on the other side of the world and returned as Anzacs. Pitted against superior enemy forces, they matured into a cohesive force that played a major role in the ultimate defeat of the enemy. In this book we see how the unprepared troops undertook the futile Gallipoli campaign and survived to fight again. Water

For many years the role of women in building Australia was poorly recognised. In reality, from the days of the First Fleet women paide a key part in politics, business and society. This book shows how many talented and charismatic women worked tirelessly to make the nation what it is today. Women were key workers for universal voting rights, federation, to improve working conditions, and to gain equality in a male‐dominated society. These are the women who made Australian history.

For some people, where they live is a matter of what they can afford. For others, it is a question of choice. Across Australia there are many types of place. In this book we look at the many options. At present the most popular place to live is the detached house in a suburban estate. These have the advantage of space, but may require much travelling between home and work or school. Rapidly growing in popularity is the apartment, or home unit, in a high‐or low‐rise building. These are usually close to work and transport. Most Australians live in major cities or large regional centres; some travel the country for work or pleasure; others are homeless.A place to live means something different to every person. Be it large or small, close or remote, where people live is vital to their wellbeing and happiness.

Water around the world places with plenty and with none. Uses of water and where it is found and stored in Australia. How societies have adapted to using available water. How the built environment evolved around available water. The effect of water quality on societies. Ways of redistributing water resources by redirecting water flows building dams etc. and how water usage is modified in times of drought and plenty.

From isolationist kingdom to colonialist military power, to devastating defeat, then rebirth as one of the world's premier industrial economies. This nation of modestly sized islands off the coast of Asia evolved from a virtual clone of China into a land with a very distinct character. Here we have a society in which the Imperial family was believed to have been put in place by God. It is a society that gave birth to a succession of powerful leaders who used the Emperor's stature to further their own ambitions. This book shows how Japan was able to fend off the European colonial powers, then manipulate them to suit its needs. This is the story of a militaristic culture determined to realise Japan's destiny no matter what the cost.

Vietnam was in a state of war from the 19th century until 1975. Its regions of Cochinchina, Annam and Tonkin were colonised by the French in the late 1800s. Life was harsh as their homeland was ruthlessly exploited for its minerals and rubber. After World War II the French returned to be confronted by a guerrilla movement known as the Viet Minh. Their unconventional hit‐and‐run tactics brought the French army to its knees in 1954. In the 1960s the USA sent half a million troops to support South Vietnam in its battle against North Vietnam. All these vast resources could not match the determination of the North Vietnamese. On 30 April 1975 Vietnam was reunified.

Landscape degradation is of growing importance to all Australians. It will greatly affect the lives of future generations if not properly managed. This book details the many types of landscape that make up Australia. These vary from coastal to mountainous, riverine to desert, and the built landscape created by humans. It then examines how landscape degradation comes about when natural processes are interfered with or altered. Usually this is directly or indirectly caused by the intervention of humans. Addressing the problems of landscape degradation is one of the most important matters facing Australia.

The Industrial Revolution was in its early stages in Britain when Europeans settled in Australia in 1788. Within 30 years Australia had become the largest supplier of wool to the huge textile industry based around Bradford in England. As the colonies prospered, they became lucrative markets for Britain's manufacturers, effectively delaying Australia's growth as a manufacturing nation until the late 19th century. This is the incredible story of the Industrial Revolution and how Australia benefited ‐ and suffered ‐ from the great advances in steam power, gas lighting and mass production it brought.

For 67 years, from 1788 to 1855, ten men held the fate of modern Australia in their hands. They were the governors, the supreme leaders of the Australian colonies. These ten made decisions every day that could spell the difference between life and death for thousands. They were sailors, soldiers, builders, explorers, administrators, humanitarians, disciplinarians, scientists, visionaries, aristocrats. Some had massive egos, some generated enthusiastic support, some were loathed and hated. Above all, they were leaders.

Peoples of the Pacific and Their Origins

Immediately after World War II Australia embarked on the greatest immigration program in its history. Over the following decades immigrants flooded into the country, changing it forever. They came from Europe and later from Asia and other parts of the world. At first they filled a huge gap in the labour force, providing the economic strength for national expansion in manufacturing and infrastructure development. This is the story of how the program was planned, where the people came from, and how they became Australians with their own distinct identities

The Constitution

After World War II Australians regarded themselves as a warrior nation, able to go anywhere to protect freedom. In the early 1960s, under US pressure, the Menzies government committed a team of military advisers to the War in Vietnam. In 1965 this was expanded to a battalion of combat troops. It became necessary to reintroduce conscription, provoking one of the most divisive times in Australian history. Although initially popular, the Vietnam commitment eventually divided the nation, family member against family member. A culture of protest erupted across the country.

There are three main cultural groupings that populate the vast Pacific Ocean: Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian. They represent epic migrations from parts of Asia over many thousands of years. This is their story, of the countries they belong to, and the way they evolved from the original settlers. This book explains how those cultures were influenced by centuries of European colonialism, and how international boundaries were created without considering cultural and tribal patterns.

The Australian Constitution created the nation that is Australia today. More than a century ago a group of influential people sought to give the six colonies of Australia a united voice in their dealings with Great Britain. They also wanted freedom of trade and movement among them. For almost a decade this group of prominent nationalists and leading politicians worked to create what became the Constitution. This is their story: a story of how Australia's supporters at home and in Britain worked to create the framework for the Commonwealth.

No Australian has a higher profile than the Prime Minister. Since 1901 twenty‐seven people have held the post of head of government. Their terms of office range from Frank Forde's six days to Robert Menzies' sixteen years. Three were caretakers. Here we see the full range of characters from the laid‐back to the irrational, the determined to the hapless, the idealist to the opportunist. This is the story of how driven individuals shaped Australian society for better or worse over more than a century. Australia's prime ministers and their governments are the backbone of our democracy.

Japan's Shogunate period lasted from 1192 to 1867, with only occasional breaks from military government. This is the story of Emperors with prestige but little power, and of Shoguns who used political cunning and military force to control the nation. Dedicated soldiers, known as samurai, fought the Shogun's battles and maintained civil order among the population. This book explores the styles of the many Shoguns until the Meiji Restoration. Shogunate Japan is the origin of the military tradition that continues to influence Japan today.

The 1970s

For some it was a time of certainty, prosperity, rising income, improved lifestyle. For others it was a decade of oppression, censorship, prejudice, discrimination, hatred. For most, whether an immigrant or someone who had lived in Australia through Depression or war, it was a new era. This is about the time when new arrivals felt the sting of prejudice, and when bureaucrats could remove children from indigenous families or make narrow‐ minded decisions about what books we read and films we saw or whether we could have two telephones in our homes. Read how full employment was achieved in factories protected by import tariffs; how a powerful union movement won major improvements for workers; how rationing and forced saving ended, ushering in an era of 21 per cent inflation; how Communist spies were thought to be everywhere and nuclear war was imminent; how the Labor Party tore itself apart; how the nation went crazy over a young Queen; and how Robert

The 1960s was a decade of growing prosperity for most Australians, with full employment and improving lifestyles, but there was also war and conscription and social conflict. Australia in the 1960s was looking for change, but a government in power too long could not see what was coming. For the first time people young and old fought back against conscription and war, but we went crazy when an American President came to visit. And easy‐ going Australia changed forever when a Prime Minister was lost in the surf. This was The 1960s ‐ the decade of Vietnam, National Service, Harold Holt, LBJ, jobs for all, the minerals boom, the credit squeeze, Australian governors‐general, decimal currency, the Gurinji, capital punishment, miniskirts, computers and new, previously unheard‐of, freedoms.

This is the decade when Australia caught up with the rest of the world in social development. It is a period of political and economic turmoil, when an elected government was dismissed and the nation was shaken by natural and human‐made disasters. This book tells how Australians discovered their own culture through a renewed film industry as well as television programs, theatre and literature. It is also about times of political opportunism and new ideals, of feminism and indigenous rights, and of new ways of thinking.

The Anzac Spirit defines Australia's military past, present and future. There is nothing else in Australian society that so expresses a sense of national unity. This is the story of Australia's long military history since the 1860s - in New Zealand, the Sudan, South Africa, World War I, World War II, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. From the hell of Gallipoli through blistering deserts, mudsoaked trenches, deadly tropical jungles and snowcovered hills, this is where the tradition was forged. Here is the Anzac Spirit, Australia's military legend.

It took Australia almost 100 years to evolve into the sovereign nation of today. This book tells how the Commonwealth progressed from an umbrella government designed to further the interests of the six British colonies into a fully fledged independent national government. It takes us through the stages of evolution from British Dominion to semi‐ independence; from a federation still controlled by the British parliament to a sovereign nation making its own way in the world; from British cultural dominance to embracing global cultures. Here we look at the key events that made the Commonwealth: the early moves for federation, the great constitutional referendums, the creation of the parliament and the High Court, the adoption of the Statute of Westminster, and the final moves to full independence with the Australia Act. These are the most important events that moulded the Commonwealth, giving us the institutions, laws and traditions that are the backbone of our nation.
