MOTHERS’ DAY, 2018 The sense of family and community is one of our treasured components at Pittwater House, and never was this more in evidence than at the sold-out Mothers’ Day Lunch last Thursday. With a long waiting list with a hoped-for last-minute call-up for those who missed out on a ticket, and a continuous sense of joy and appreciation for those in the Hall, we were witness to great musical features from the Cantabile and Chamber Choirs from the Junior School. The food, bought to us by our wonderful Pittwater House Chefs, was a hit as was the opportunity for some serious shopping! The generosity of gift baskets from each class added a real panache to the day. The extent of thought and beautiful arrangement in each, created a sense of expectation as the barrel was set in motion. The Raffle was a huge success… and I thank all those parents who were gracious in buying tickets from the Principal as she scoured the room!! I shall leave the final figures to the PHPA to divulge in due course. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the efforts of a dedicated group from the PHPA. Under the leadership of Laura Suttor and supported by Kate Parsons, Katie Chambers, Helen McMahon, Connie Pople, Cat Gillespie and Lucy Dennison, the Committee had further support from those setting up the Hall on Wednesday and putting on the final touches and then the speedy clean up on Thursday. Further thanks to Melissa Langley, Karen Nyunt, Amber Potter, Eleni Mitakos, Deb Shein, Paula Arnold and Shay Gillings, for your work. Additionally, the Year 10 Food Technology students who plated up and served, had a great experience in the service industry… An interesting addition was the opportunity for one of our World Challenge groups to fundraise for their upcoming trip to Myanmar in July. Congratulations to Duncan and his team for spotting a way to add to their funds which will help village children in their school.

mothers are remembered and cared for, not only on Mother’s Day, but on every day of the year.

A wonderful story of the power of community was shared with me last weekend… it emanated from a leading Australian school with a Campus in the Victorian high-country. In brief, one member of Staff had taken her horse out for a ride in a particularly inaccessible and steep area. She had a fall and became disoriented and concussed, and unconscious for an unknown period. Knowing the general terrain was remote, rugged and particularly challenging, yet with the advanced technology available, that School put their disaster plan into action. All Staff went out to find her… with a small group remaining behind to care for the students, whose lessons were suspended. On the third day, she was found, safe. It was the Staff of the School who found her, aided as they were by the police and SES volunteers, using their training, their knowledge of the area and resources such as satellite trackers and a new radio system. Such stories give schools great pride when they know that communities such as theirs, put their hearts and souls, and in this case, their grit and determination to beat the odds, to a happy ending.

And we could not have the 2018 Budget without a post-Budget event… in this case, some of the HSC Economics students, sitting in the Board Room to unpack and analyse the budget for their HSC topic of Economics Policies and Management. We were honoured to have Mr Justice Bernstein address the secondary school in our SEA Assembly this week. Justice Bernstein is a US Supreme Court Justice, Iron Man and Marathon runner who is doubly disabled as he got run over while running a marathon. Blind since birth, Justice Bernstein has never seen the defendants he has sentenced to life in prison, nor the lawyers defending or prosecuting them. He relies instead on the energy in the room to gauge reaction, an instinct he believes is a powerful gift of blindness. He also relies on his ‘dedication to the intensification of memorisation’. He shared with the School what it means to live life. He is a tireless advocate for disabled rights and providing a voice to those who would otherwise be forced to be silent. This was an extraordinary moment for those fortunate to hear his story. Dr Nancy Hillier, Principal

HSC Creative Arts Schowcase Night In Week 8 of this term, we will be showcasing our HSC Dance, Drama and Music students in the Creative Arts Centre. This will be held over two nights Tuesday 19 June (Dance and Music) and Wednesday 20 June (Drama and Music). These are excellent night that allow the students to perform their works in front of a supportive audience. Junior School Creative Arts Evening Term 2 has one of the highlights of the school year – The Junior School Creative Arts Evening! This will take place in the School Hall on Thursday 28 June. Every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be preparing for this. The doors open at 5.30pm and performances will start at 6pm. Years 9-12 Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media On Saturday 5 May, the Years 9-12 Elective Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media students had the opportunity to partake in an educator-led tour of the 21st Biennale, an international festival of Contemporary art, held every two years on Cockatoo Island (one of 7 venues). The exhibition’s overarching theme this year was Superimposition Equilibrium and engagement under the artistic leadership of Mami Kataoka Chief Curator of Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. The exhibition is a compelling exploration of the most urgent issues of our day, among them, the unprecedented movement of people across the globe. Cockatoo Island had strong references to the refugee crisis, forced migration and the human condition as well as holistic views on the nature of the universe. In addition to this it also provided students with a hands-on approach to viewing and interacting with artworks in public spaces as opposed to the traditional setting of a gallery space. The highlight was seeing Ai Wei Wei’s newest work Law of the Journey completed in 2017. A fantastic day had by all who attended with lots of thought provoking artworks presented throughout the day; an invaluable experience for any Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media student.

WO1 Naveen and SGT Topaz attended the Adventure Training Award (ATA) camp in the Canberra region during the first week of the school holidays. I am pleased to inform the wider school community that both candidates were successful in completing the award and now proudly wear their ATA ‘boomerangs’ on their uniforms. Capt.(AAC) S. McClean

YEAR 10 GRAMMAR SEMINAR On Monday 7 May the Year 10 Grammar students took part in Glen Gerreyn’s ‘Men of Honour’ seminar. The seminar covered a range of topics, from how to identify a mentor, to how to attain a balanced lifestyle – and everything in between. It was so pleasing to see our young men maintain focus over the entirety of the seminar, as well as, the initiative they demonstrated in taking notes throughout. Furthermore, Glen was highly complementary of their attitude and respectful behaviour, and the way they participated in discussing the issues he raised. The students were then led through a further two hour session after lunch where they had the opportunity to start thinking about the challenges associated with the transition from boys to men and what it meant to be a man of honour. An emphasis of the day was on the decisions that young men make and the ramifications of those decisions, both for them and for those around them. We know our young men will not always make the right call, but they know they have a strong network around them for support as they grow into men of honour.

Junior School News FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLS Thank you to all family members and friends who came along to support the students in their Cross Country carnivals last week. It is a tough event and we are extremely proud of all the students for giving their best effort. The representative team has been selected to compete at the HICES Cross Country in Orange on Tuesday 29 May. All students in the Junior School should now be wearing their full winter uniform to and from school as per the Skoolbag notification. The new white blouses are worn by the Kindergarten to Year 4 girls and new trousers can be worn by the young ladies in Years 5 and 6. The new track suit is also a very smart looking garment. The Outdoor Education Group camps will take place for Year 4 in Week 4 and for Year 3 in Week 5 and I’m certain all students will have a wonderful time forming stronger bonds and growing in independence and self assuredness. I would like to inform you that I am taking two weeks long service leave and will return to school on Tuesday 29 May. In my absence Mrs Amy Tickle will be acting Head of Junior School. Please contact Mrs Tickle if you have any urgent matters. Mrs Ruth Achurch, Head of Junior Schools J5 STEM PROJECT In J5, we have been learning about Colonisation in History. We investigated how the first settlers arrived in Australia and built their shelters. When learning about their shelters we worked together in group to design and build small versions of their huts. The materials we used to build the sculptures were sticks, leaves, bark, and modelling clay to help us join the sticks together. As a part of the design process, our shelters then got put to the test. We had to construct a haven that was waterproof, wind-proof and heat-proof. J5 had so much fun designing and building these huts and would love to do something similar again. Thank you to Miss Floyd and Ms Dooley for giving us the opportunity.

Mirabelle and Kameko (J5) FROM THE ECC The children and staff of the Early Childhood Centre had a wonderful ‘theatre experience’ in our first week of term, when we all excitedly piled on to the big School bus and headed off to Glen Street Theatre. There we were treated to a production based on the book, ‘Josephine Wants to Dance’, a story about dreams, believing in yourself…and a dancing kangaroo. For many of our children, it was their first time on a bus and I’m unsure whether the play or the return bus trip was the biggest highlight! As the lights dimmed the children settled into their seats...and then the play began. They were all mesmerised by the actors on the stage and their portrayal of Josephine and her escapades in the pursuit of her dream to be a ‘real’ dancer. It opened up a magical world for them where the animals spoke, danced and sang...the costumes were amazing! At the conclusion of the production the children joined with the rest of the audience in giving the actors a big round of well-deserved applause! A question and answer session with the actors followed. We then had our morning tea in the gardens and made our way back to the bus, for the return journey to school. HouseNews Issue 2018 / 8

The staff and parent helpers were very proud of the children for their beautiful behavior throughout the excursion. They were a credit to themselves, the ECC and the School. This was a wonderful support to our literacy program, where the children experienced a story that they love, come to life. We look forward to taking the children on their next adventure...where ever that may be! A huge thank you to our wonderful parent helpers, whose assistance was invaluable.

Strength and Conditioning Pittwater House Strength and conditioning sessions are co-ordinated by the School Physiotherapists/Exercise Physiologists. “Personalised programs to suit their needs and injury background.” This year’s strength and conditioning classes have quickly increased in popularity. The students have thoroughly enjoyed the classes, but most of all have made some great strength gains and increased their injury prevention ability. As always students will learn about the dangers when it comes to health, strength, conditioning, proper nutrition, physiotherapy based principles such as core activation and correct positioning, and above all, they will receive a personalised program to suit their needs and injury background. Students will enjoy working hard on their strength and fitness which will ultimately help them in their respective sports and above all prevent injury. If they have a current injury this is also the perfect place to be. We can continue and enhance their rehabilitation. When/Where: Monday and Wednesday mornings (7.20-8.15am). Rebates on private health funds will be available at the end of the term via a receipt sent to your email. Rebates come under a "group physiotherapy" clause in your private fund so check with your fund if you can claim under this (most can, some will even cover the entire cost). Please call Andrew at any time on:9999 6666 as soon as possible to secure your position. The senior soccer B team defeated Covenant Christian in a hard-fought match. Goals were scored by Noah and Jaxton with Max being awarded Man-of the-Match. PISA Junior Boys B Football v Northern Beaches Christian School (11 May). Lost 0-6. The boys had their first training session with Mr Whisson on a very cold and windy day. All boys arrived on time, full kit and ready for a run. The enthusiasm was evident as they were put through their paces. The boys were defeated 0-6 in an exhausting game and will need to stay in position to be more competitive. Player-of the-Week was Charlie. PISA Mixed Hockey v Northern Beaches Christian School (11 May). Lost 1-2. This was their first team game with most having never played hockey before. The team demonstrated perseverance, listening skills and team work throughout the match. They lost by one goal and stopped many that came their way. A tremendous effort by all. PISA Senior Girls A Netball v Covenant Christian School (11 May). Won 23-0. The team started their season off with a convincing win. The girls played well as a unit and will only improve as the term progresses. Our captain for the game Molly was dominant down the defence end. Emma and Scarlett worked hard in unison with Molly, preventing any balls from reaching the opponents shooters. Our centre court players Addison, Jasmine and Darcey were quick with their breaks and passes, effortlessly transitioning the ball from the defence end to our shooters. Sophie, Grace and Jessica worked their magic in the goal circle, patiently working the ball towards the post and finishing with some great goals. Addison was Player-of the-Match for her team work and relentless effort. A great game played by all members. Well done girls!

PISA Senior Girls B Netball v Galstuan College (11 May). Won 23-3. The Captain was Marigold and Player-of the-Match was awarded to Chloe for most improved footwork (we were focusing on footwork before the game). The other team were all playing for the first time so our amazing girls helped them with rules, positions etc. Their patience toward the other team was just beautiful. Super proud! PISA Senior Girls B Netball v Northern Beaches Christian School (11 May). Lost 0-9. Players-of the-Match were Millie and Billie and thank you to Stella for being the captain. Even though we lost all girls played extremely well. TEAM SPORT – SENIOR SCHOOL Basketball G6 Pittwater Kings v St Lukes Rangers (9 March). Won 34-11. The Kings dominated the game even though the Rangers had some skilful players who made them work for their goals. There were plenty of opportunities for the Kings to do some impressive layups which made it an enjoyable game to watch. G7 Pittwater Celtics v Bally Prime (9 April). Lost 6-43. Our boys started off well, but our opponents showed more desperation in both offensive and defensive rebounding, maintaining the greater amount of possession. Jake played extremely well, but in general the team must work harder to improve their communication and commitment to holding the ball. Football Grammar U14 B v St Lukes (3 May). Won 4-2. Despite St Lukes only having nine players they still opened the scoring after a ‘kick and chase’ opportunity. St Lukes played to their strengths and really pushed our boys but eventually the superior numbers told and Blake bagged a brace to put TPHS up 2-1 by half time. The pattern of play was much the same in the second half with St Lukes always looking dangerous but unable make it pay without the numbers. A goal each by Sahya and Charlie finished some good attacking movement to put TPHS in command of the game. St Lukes never gave up and some strong individual play saw them pull a goal back to give them some hope but the final result was never in doubt. A good opening win for TPHS. Special mention to Michal whose confidence between the sticks spread throughout the team and showed the importance of having a good keeper. Grammar U16 B v St Leos (1 May). Lost 1-6. For the first game of the season Pittwater House U16 Blues came up against some extremely tough opposition in St Leos. Using ‘Blitzkrieg’ tactics St Leos quickly went four up within 15 minutes with long balls catching our defence square. It seemed there was nothing we could do to halt their advance. However, despite the shock opening the boys dug deep, never surrendered and started creating a few opportunities of their own and traded a goal each in the final minutes of the first half with James Pinnington neatly lobbing the St Leos keeper for our first of the season. A few small tweaks at half time saw the boys retake the field with determination to continue where they left off the first half. St Leos continued to push but the boys had learnt quickly in the first half and kept a much tighter structure to keep St Leos contained and minimise their opportunities whilst being a little unlucky in not getting more from some fast breaks of our own. St Leos have a strong side clearly experienced in playing together but the second half in particular really showed the potential of our team despite the final 6-1 scoreline. Particular mention to Colm and Seb in goals who had plenty to do and to Tommy’s enthusiasm and commitment as he covered every blade of grass on the pitch (twice...even from right wing to left back!) Grammar U18 v Oxford Falls Grammar School (2 May). Won 3-1. A strong TPHS Opens team started the season full of optimism and scored a goal within 15 seconds of kick off! Some sloppy defending gave OFGS a golden opportunity but that was the last time they threatened in the game. The TPHS boys quickly regrouped and were back on level terms just a few minutes later with a goal by Bronson from the edge of the box after a good first touch to beat his defender. After that it was all one way traffic with opportunities for TPHS going wide, high or blocked by the OFGS keeper. By the end of the first half the pressure had to tell and a neat run by Alex, making up for the OFGS goal, put Lachie through who still had plenty to do but made no mistake with a perfect finish. More opportunities came and went for TPHS with Matt finally putting the finishing touches to the game with a neat header on the back post from a corner to finish the game. Netball TPHS Year 8 v Mater Maria (1 May). Lost 8-25. The girls all gave their best effort. They need to work out what positions they are best suited to, watch their passing (try to avoid high loopy passes) and stay in front of the opposition players. They all had fun and worked well as a team.

TPHS Year 7A v St Lukes (8 May). Lost 16-18. What a great game to start the season! The first time the girls have all played together and they put in an impressive performance – this will be a team to watch! A close game which saw the lead change at each quarter, the girls were narrowly defeated. A great effort with some fantastic passes, goals, team play and strategy. TPHS Year 7B v Mater Maria (8 May). Lost. The 14B's played their first game on Tuesday evening. Possibly not the finest display of netball ever but the girls had a good runaround and gave it their all. Our solitary goal was scored by Chloe while Amelia Byrne and Mia in defence ensured that the opposition's goal count didn't run into the hundreds. The rest of the team was made up of Sienna, Rachael, Darcy, Aiyla, Lara. Last quarter we did a 'lucky dip' for positions so at least we ended on a fun note! Their umpire was atrocious, ours was spectacular so many thanks to Emily. The only way is up girls! Water Polo Pittwater House Intermediate Boys vs St Augustines A (7 May). Lost 0-9. In the first game of the season the team put in a valiant effort against a very strong team. The opening quarter was very tight with the team down 0-1 at the break. The boys were fatigued going into the second half and this allowed St Augustines to score more goals. Whilst it was a loss it was a positive experience as the team performed very well in the first half. They will work on defence and fitness in training. PATHWAY SPORTS HICES Primary Girls Netball Trials Congratulations to the Primary Girls Senior A Netball Team that participated at the HICES Netball Gala Day on Friday 4 May. This is the first time in over 10 years that a Pittwater House team has done so well at these Championships finishing second overall after winning 7 of the 8 round games. Game 1 against Arndell Anglian College TPHS won 5-4 this was a very tough first game with the girls playing together as a team for the first time. Game 2 against Central Coast Grammar, this was a very hard game with CCG becoming undefeated on the day and taking out the championships. Game 3 against St Pauls TPHS winning 10-3, backing up after a hard loss the girls worked hard to come away with another win. Game 4 was against Orange Anglican, by game 4 the girls really started showing some strength in their ability to work well as a team taking away their 3rd win 11-5. Game 5 the last one before a much need break was against Kinross and another win for the girls finishing 10-2. After a nice 30min rest break the girls then took on Redlands with our strong defence end shutting them down to score only 1 goal finishing the game up 11-1. Our 6th game was against All Saints, by now the team was really working well and starting to convert all turn overs, taking away another win and a best for the day 18-1. Our last game of the day was against William Clarke College, we knew this was going to be a hard game as they were sitting in equal 3rd position, after an encouraging prep talk to the girls they finished the day with another great win beating WCC 17-3. Three Pittwater House girls Molly, Jasmine and Jessica were then selected as Possible and Probable’s players narrowing missing out in a position in the HICES Team. Congratulations to the following girls who played with such determination, commitment, discipline and focus and yet still had a great time and lots of fun on the court: Addison, Sophie, Emma, Jasmine, Jessica, Molly, Scarlett, Grace and Darcey. Well done girls. AICES U15 Netball Championships On Monday 7 May, Hannah, Olivia, Eloise, Tehya and Emily travelled to Netball Central to play in the CDSSA U15 Netball team at the AICES U15 Championships. Unfortunately, the girls didn’t come away with any wins however they played with the heart and soul all day putting in their all against some very tough zone teams. Congratulations to Emily who made the short list and played in the possible and probable game. Huge thank you to Patricia Byrne’s for coaching the CDSSA team for us on the day. NSW CIS Primary Boys AFL Trials On the 9th of March Tyrone (P6) travelled to Canberra for the CIS AFL Primary Football Trials. There were 90 boys from all over NSW that trialled to determine the team to play in the NSW Championships. Tyrone was one of the boys selected and will travel to Batemans Bay in May for the championships. Well done Tyrone.

NSW CIS Primary Boys Football Carnival In extremely hot conditions late last term, we sent our top four Primary Boys in soccer to attend the CIS Selection trials for Football. These boys were representing the HICES team at the trials. Nicolas was captain of the HICES team and he was joined by Tyrone, Hugo and Ted. The team played four matches during the day against nine other association teams from all over NSW. The HICES team won one game (their first on the day) against the HRIS team 4 goals to 2. Tyrone scored two of the goals in impressive fashion. The team then played CSSA and went down 6-0, IPSHA 5-0 and their final outing was against NCIS where they lost a tight one 2–1 with Tyrone scoring our only goal. Tyrone finished the day as the team’s top goal scorer and he was unlucky to miss out on the final possible v probable game that was used to select this year’s CIS Football team. Well done to all the boys: Tyrone, Ted, Hugo and Nic for your efforts on the very hot and challenging day. You are all talented Footballers with promising futures in the game. CDSSA Senior School Football Trials U15 Girls Recently we sent an U15 Girls Football team to the International Football and Tennis school at Kariong to take part in trials to select the CDSSA Football team. Our team played three matches and recorded two draws and one loss on the day. From our squad three of the team were selected to play for CDSSA in the AICES U15 Girls Football Championships. Congratulations on to the following girls: Emily, Savanna and Jena-Elle. SCHOOL CARNIVALS – CROSS COUNTRY Junior School Cross On Friday 4 May, the entire Junior School had their chance to push themselves and run in our Annual Cross-Country Carnival. Each age group had targeted distances that challenged their bodies and minds, especially on the difficult track around the school which includes our very own HeartBreak Hill. Our first race was the 5 to 6 year old age group. Their race distance was approximately 800m, three laps around our oval. I really love watching this race as they battle to keep their little legs moving and it is a real test of character for our youngest members. There were some excellent little athletes, in particular Max and Oriana, who won their races. Next up was the 7 year olds and they had their first chance to run our complete track. Our school track takes on many different surfaces and the hill climb is particularly difficult but these little champions impressed with the way they all ran and finished the course. The champions in this age group were Heath and Abigail. The HICES team is made up from our top 5 athletes in these age groups which are: 8 to 9 years, 10 years and 11 years and the top 6 athletes in the 12+ years category. As we have 8 year olds in grades 2 and 3 we used their times as they ran in two different races bot comprising of two laps of our course or 2km. After the dust settled in both races the 8-9 years champions were Charlie and Sadie. Our 10 years age group has some excellent runners and the results showed some close finishes. Noah won the boys and Arabella who had just arrived in Sydney from the UK that morning, won the girls. Our 11 years race, which was 3km was won by James and Chloe and our 12+ years race deemed Tyrone and Scarlett champions. The HICES race will be at Orange Anglican on Tuesday 29 May. We are aware there is a clash with the Year 3 camp, so please contact Mr Ben McGregor to discuss your options. Our HICES team in order of finishing is as follows: 8-9 years Boys- Charlie, James, Levi, Kyran and Oliver; 8-9 years Girls- Sadie, Ellaline, Grace, Amy and Lucia; 10 years Boys- Noah, Toby, Neehan, Matthew and Alexander; 10 years Girls- Arabella, Lydia, Sienna, Kate and Ava; 11 years Boys- James, Nick, Hugo, Zak and Lachlan; 11 years Girls- Chloe, Kameko, Kaylee, Kali and Addison; 12+ years Boys- Tyrone, Nicolas, Ben, Oscar, Campbell and Sebastian and 12+ years Girls- Scarlett, Jasmine, Nami, Marigold, Madison and Mia. Mr Ben McGregor, Co-ordinator of PDHPE K-Year 6
