Message from the Principal The history books will recall the year 2020 as a year like no other, the word unprecedented has been used over and over; its unique qualities will be forever remembered.
Principal, Dr Nancy Hillier
2020 has brought out the best (and worst) in members of our society. It created new and engaging opportunities, whilst depriving countless folk of their livelihood, and gateway to their futures. It saw deprivation and distress, death and disease, on a scale not witnessed in a century whilst showing the community how heroic are our health workers. It made us acutely aware of the word global, for our interconnectedness and ease of international travel, made this pandemic impact virtually every nation, large and small, whilst relishing the opportunities for containment, that Australia, being an island nation and continent, provides. It paid no heed to status or income, bringing down world leaders as easily as the poorest members of endangered and vulnerable communities; numbers in ICUs and on ventilators became key data to watch whilst terms such as Zoom and Google Teams became the accepted means of communication. We have lived through COVID-19. We are still engaged in this world war, where guns are silent and masks, sanitiser and social distancing, are the new forms of battle. What are we left with at Pittwater House as we review the past 4 terms? This has been an unexpected opportunity for students to develop skills in readiness to step out to be the young men and women who can be confident to take on new challenges whatever circumstance they face and to ensure they are prepared to be leaders who set directions for the future. The intense focus on our mode of delivery requires us to probe deeply and look not just at what we do, but why we do each element of our programs. Our focus on
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
student agency has shown profound relevance. Yet above all else, schools need to continue to be a source of relative confidence in such uncertain times. It is thus beholden on us to extol our students, and your children, to be optimistic. Schools are by their very nature optimistic places, with our daily work centring around teaching students to be the best people they can be, and to believe that collectively, they have the capacity to address the often-wicked issues facing our world. This year has brought to the fore the importance of community; families do not merely enrol at Pittwater House; they enter our School and join our School. Sadly, for the moment, this has been lost. Yet we have engaged in new and deeply important ways with our families. For the small group of us who made contact with all our families, it was about connection; reaching out to ensure how each family was coping and how we could support further the students as they transitioned back to the school setting from remote learning. It was the year when we looked to new technologies to support our connectedness; we can now claim our students as the ‘Zoom Generation’, and likewise, our once expected campus occasions for parents and friends have been replaced with Zoom meetings and of course, the ability to live stream major community occasions such as the Foundation Day Assembly, Relay and the cross country events. In reflecting on the year past, we can recall the impact made by our Guest of Honour at the 2019 Prize Giving, Macinley Butson. Each year we are privileged to hear from wonderful young Australians as they recount their journey and extol our students
to drive to achieve a future pathway in many and varied ways. Macinley brought to our final gathering for the year, significant accolades, being the Young Australian of the Year for NSW in 2018. Her obsession with inventing sunglasses began as a Year 2 student and whilst a passionate scientist through her schooling, she pursued a love of literature as a complementary activity. Her message of following dreams and innovation and the need for scientists in our world, was most timely. Her latest research centres on a water invention to biologically sanitise water. Thus, as an international awardee at 16 years of age, an inspirational role model for young Australians and showing our students how they can create and give back to their community, Macinley provided a marvellous high point and conclusion to our academic year. It was therefore a wonderful segue to the HSC results published the following day. These results placed Pittwater House at 85th in NSW and 56th in English Advanced/ Extension and 54th in Mathematics Advanced/Extension. We would like to congratulate all students from the Class of 2019 who worked so hard and contributed so much across all areas of school life. We are so proud of every student, the strength and depth of their leadership, their service to others and their enthusiastic involvement in many domains. It has been a privilege to have been an integral part of their lives during their formative years. A year in review appropriately includes a vote of thanks. From the leadership provided by our Head Prefects for 2019 Naveen Dhillon and Lara Huby-Stewart and their team, to the incoming 2020 leaders under Alexander Butcher and Grace Carpenter, a warm vote of thanks. These students have taken up the challenge to find meaning and place through weeks of remote learning and different ways of engaging in
long held practices, particularly when so many annual events needed to be reshaped. Our parent body, the PHPA, under the Presidency of Mrs Kate Parsons and her small Committee, you too have been challenged in maintaining a sense of connection when the presence of parents on Campus has not been possible. To the Staff of Pittwater House, my profound thanks for your positivity and deep engagement with all that has been asked of you, and to the Board of Governors under the Chairmanship of Mr Todd Alexis SC; a sincere debt of gratitude as you too have dealt with a changing and challenging landscape. We all need courage and a belief in the inherent goodness of all people and as we conclude the academic year, I thank you for walking with us in support of our unique family setting whilst wishing you every success and period of refreshment until we meet again in late January. Merry Christmas to you all. Dr Nancy Hillier

Message from the Chairman As Pittwater House approaches our 60th birthday, the historians amongst us will ponder the changes not merely in facilities, but importantly, in the student profile and of course, teaching and learning and the approach to pastoral care and wellbeing. In each of these areas, 2019/2020 can be seen to have contributed to our history.
Chairman, Mr Todd Alexis SC
The 2020 academic year began on the tail of a tragic summer: drought intensified, bush fires raged, and then floods disrupted plans for the traditional Term 1 camping program. Little did we know that within weeks, COVID-19 would force our students to be engaging in remote learning with significant new challenges for students and Staff alike. The Pittwater House community was stretched in ways few could comprehend. And the response from all is a testament to the energy, adaptability and resilience of all, with extraordinary leadership from our esteemed Principal, Dr Nancy Hillier. As a Board of Directors, we have been heartened at the response to not only survive but thrive, as a School. We looked different as we started the year. We heralded a new era in the Junior Primary with the creation of the K-2 Learning Hub; a facility that was bright and fresh and welcoming to the needs of the youngest primary students. As the year has unfolded, we continue to see the impact of our ongoing refurbishment and maintenance programs whilst the Master Plan awaits Council approval. Our student profile is changing as the growing gender balance draws more girls into our School and as such, several year groups comprise greater numbers of girls than boys. It is heartening too to see a growing number of Alumni bring their children back to their alma mater, all signs of our progressive vision and future planning. As a Board we were delighted to see the Class of 2019 achieve with distinction. The results of these
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
fine young men and women are acknowledged with pride and we look forward to their continuing engagement as members of our Alumni Association. Particular congratulations are extended to our Dux of the Grammar School James Pinnington with an ATAR of 97.3 and the Dux of the Girls’ College Geordie Smith with an ATAR of 99.05, our All Rounders Annabelle Hyde and Tamsyn Martin, together with the Distinguished Achievers: 40% of the College students and 36% from the Grammar School. Of course, our Teaching and Learning through 2020 has been the source of continued agility on behalf of the Staff, and resilience from our student body. Through this time, the impact of our pastoral care and wellbeing programs have been tested again. The strength of connection between home and school, always a source of comfort and appreciation, was manifest. In such uncertain times, mental health has been a priority for our School Executive; never has there been a more urgent time to love and care for our children. Change to the Board composition has occurred this year; Mr Jason Mahoney resigned in December 2019 and Mrs Connie Pople joined us, having served as Co-President of the PHPA leading into this year. Our sincere thanks are extended to Jason for his fine contribution, and our thanks to Connie for the knowledge she brings to our meetings. As we conclude a year like no other, I trust that your connections with our School grow ever deeper. Mr Todd Alexis SC
Message from the Deputy Principal 2020 has been a year that has brought out the best of many of our students, teachers and School community. Despite the considerable impact of bushfires and floods in Term 1, which threw our Year 7, 8 and 9 camps into disarray, nothing could prepare us for the complete reimagining of our curriculum delivery that was brought upon by COVID-19.
Deputy Principal, Mr James Walmsley
Unfortunately, in a year where many remarkable achievements have taken place, 2020 will be remembered for remote learning, social distancing, Zoom presentations and a restructuring of many traditional Pittwater House activities. Due to the timings of when this message was written we were yet to know the School’s 2020 HSC results. However, it is appropriate to mention and celebrate the 2019 results of our students. In addition to our school ranking of 85th in NSW, Pittwater House students have achieved 13 ATARs greater than 95, with two students reaching the All Rounders List, 27 students making the Distinguished Achiever’s List and 12 students nominated for Callback – and all from a small student cohort. Geordie Smith achieved the distinguished position of Dux of the Girls College, with a wonderful ATAR of 99.05 and James Pinnington achieved the Dux of the Grammar School with 97.3. We are thrilled that as of October, we already have 50 students from the Class of 2020 receiving early entry into their 2021 University Courses. These early entry offers are based on a range of areas, such as individual portfolios and Year 12 school assessment marks. It is great that so many of our students can be reassured that they have a guaranteed spot, before they even sit an HSC Examination, which is testament to the hard work they have put into their schooling throughout their time at Pittwater House. We are also thrilled to be able to celebrate at this point the great success our students
have achieved in their HSC practical submissions or performances. As of this date, we are aware that Emily Zhou has been nominated for Encore for her HSC Music performance, Lily Briscoe and Shantani Jepson have been nominated for HSC Callback for their HSC Dance performances. Shantani did remarkably well, receiving three Callbacks for Dance. A similar outstanding achievement was the nomination of Matthew Norton’s major Visual Arts Body of Work to NESA’s ARTEXPRESS. NESA holds these events to showcase exemplary examples of HSC student works. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many School activities and has meant we have had to redesign the way we communicate with parents and our ability to be involved in external-school events, in many ways it has resulted in an increased focus on the classroom. The six weeks of remote learning had its challenges, but it was not long before we had a consistent package of lessons being delivered as per the timetable, with the assistance of tools such as Canvas, Zoom and Microsoft Teams. As of October, 5,080 Zoom meetings and 5,068 Microsoft Teams video conferences have taken place at Pittwater House. This has included lessons, meetings and even ‘New Parent Evenings’ and ‘Subject Selection’ presentations. It was extraordinary to see how well our community and especially our students adapted to the shift in learning styles. It was also amazing to see the quality of the work that was still being produced by the students during this period of uncertainty. The 5
Message from the Deputy Principal teachers in particular deserve a great amount of praise for their flexibility, but also their determination to make remote learning a success. Although, 2020 was a year without NAPLAN, it remained a year of many students being involved in Gifted and Talented opportunities, University of NSW ICAS Competitions and other subject specific enrichment opportunities. This was further facilitated by the introduction into the School of a full time Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, in Mrs Victoria James. One special mention here goes to Yarra Jackson in College 8, who achieved first place in the Future Problem Solving Competition. This made her the
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
National Champion in the Individual Category of this competition, which was an amazing effort. Next year she will represent Australia in the International level of the competition.
in so many leadership, outdoor education, sporting and academic pursuits. Therefore, for those seeking early entry there are well armed with value adding evidence to support their school academic results.
As our students enter their HSC Examinations within their COVID bubble, it has been great to see their resilience, adaptability and good humor. The fact that so many have achieved early entry into their post school tertiary options, is not only a reflection of the great advice of Mrs Mellissa Murray our Stage 6 Stage Co-ordinator and Careers Advisor, but also a reflection of the fact that Pittwater House students throughout their schooling have been involved
I am thrilled with what has been learnt in 2020 about student agency, pedagogy, resilience and new ways of engaging both the students and our community. Our School is now a much more flexible place and one where we are much more prepared to deal with new challenges. These lessons and the strength of our community will see us face 2021 as an even stronger place of learning. Mr James Walmsley

Message from the Head of Junior School The overarching theme for 2020 continues to be RESPECT, focusing on gratitude; being able to express thanks for all we have. It will be expressed in many and varied forms this year in the Junior School community. When I wrote these words at the beginning of the year little did we know how deep our gratitude would be and of the many to whom our gratitude would be extended by the end of such a testing year. Head of Junior School, Mrs Ruth Achurch
In the 4th term of 2019, the closure of the academic year in the Junior School was celebrated in a variety of ways. The Kindergarten to Year 2 Christmas concert had us witness to the most delightful and novel displays of how we celebrate Christmas. At the Junior School Prizegiving ceremony, I asked the audience of students and parents to consider the concept of achievement, referencing the work of Professor Carol Dweck. In one of her studies focusing on achievement, Dweck refers to reaching achievement as being either, NOT YET, or YET; encouraging our children to work with a growth mindset, and to keep on trying despite the possible initial lack of success. Dweck advocates using positive self-talk. In this way, some thoughts for us all to consider are: How are we helping our children build that bridge from Not Yet to Yet? Are we raising our children for now instead of Yet? Are we raising children who are hesitant about having a go in case they fail? Are we raising children who don’t know how to dream big dreams? Are our children carrying a need for constant validation with them into their future lives because they need it to make decisions? So, how do we build that bridge to Yet? Dweck states that we need to praise wisely, making sure not to praise intelligence or natural talent,
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
as these are gifts. Naturally, these gifts and talents can be acknowledged as a blessing, however, the child’s use of their intelligence is what needs to be celebrated. Praising the process in which children engage: their effort, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance, their improvement, creates children who are hardy and resilient. Use of the words Yet or Not Yet may possibly give our students, •
greater confidence
•
path into the future that a creates greater persistence
•
change from fixed to growth a mindsets, where students believe in their ability and are willing to try and succeed.
As 2020 dawned and the new academic year approached, the Junior School warmly welcomed the newest members of our School family. The first assembly of the year announced that The Junior School Student Leadership Team for the 2020 was as follows:
Preparatory School Henry Cook (Assembly Leader Michael Chi (Strength & Reflections) Bowie Binks (Butterworth House) Arlo Thompson (Orrock House) Matthew Hickey (Morgan House) Roy Stines (SRC)
Junior Girls’ College Phillipa Connell (Assembly Leader) Kate Partridge (Strength & Reflections) Tilley Harris (Butterworth House) Arabella Handley (Orrock House) Kaya Punter (Morgan House) Lydia Gordon (SRC)
We were all so excited to open the new K-2 Discovery Hub to the students of 2020 to ‘test drive’ the fresh and innovative learning environment that was created over the 2019-20 summer holiday period. Happily, a huge tick of approval for the space was given by both our young students and their parents. Our newest students from Year 1 through to Year 6 were collectively, somewhat nervous, to commence their Pittwater House journey, however the huge smiles at the end of their initial experience and the willingness to return the next day was most reassuring. Before too long, the Kindergarten students celebrated 100 days at school, and in a variety of ways demonstrated this event by adding their unique touch to their personal presentations. The Junior School Years 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival was an occasion not to be missed as the students performed brilliantly in an effort to demonstrate their ability and keenness for selection to the pathway carnivals leading to further representation and acclaim.
Little did we know however, that only weeks after school resumed in Term 1, we’d be calling upon all the reserves of resilience we could muster; the choking smoke of the most savage and deadly bushfires threatened, and in just a couple of months, school as we knew it would abruptly be flipped on its head. We were about to be truly tested in a manner that was totally foreign to all; COVID-19 was about to visit. Rather than focus on events that were missed throughout this challenging year I would like to celebrate what was able to be achieved. What we did manage to achieve was remarkable under the circumstances, and, I gratefully thank each of the Junior School teachers for their dedication and creativity to provide outstanding learning experiences without warning for alternate presentation and in such an exceptional manner. I would also like to thank every student and family for the manner in which they adapted to the challenges of what was the ‘new normal’ of remote teaching and learning, along with working from home in their own professions.
Our amazing IT department was put to the test as we requested them to film special events that took place at School, so that they could be live-fed or Zoomed to the families at home. Our families were able to be the virtual audience at: The Foundation Day; The Principal’s Honour List Awards; The Junior School Cross Country Carnival; The CBCA Book Week Parade; Our Parent / Teacher Interviews; New Parent Information Evenings; Orientation Information Evenings for Kindergarten and all new families. Haven’t we learnt a lot? Especially about ourselves! Our capacity to adapt and be flexible, our ability to cope and compromise, our ability to work together and solve problems and our ability to see how it is for others. The greatest learning for me, has been to acknowledge that regardless of what besets us, it is important to take stock and count our blessings, and we are blessed. Mrs Ruth Achurch

THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
Message from the Head of College 2020 - what a year. Fires, floods and then the COVID-19. This pandemic has resulted in schools shut all across the world.
Head of College, Ms Lorna Probst
Globally, over 1.2 billion children were out of the classroom and as a result, education has changed dramatically. Computers, mobile phones, the Internet have become so engulfed in our daily life that they are considered a necessity. Today technology enables us to ‘travel’ to places in an instant, create the future and re-create the past; we can ‘visit’ people on the other side of the globe. We see life as we have never seen it. While such technology certainly opens up doors for us because the world does come right into our living rooms, during the pandemic students have appreciated the importance of friendships and face to face contact. It is reassuring therefore that so many Pittwater House College students look at life not just on a computer screen. They realise that they live in a small part of a very big world. The outbreak of the Coronavirus, COVID-19, has been described as the ‘worst public health crisis for a generation’ by so many of our leaders, however, with all the media coverage it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and miss out on some of the more positive news updates that are occurring in light of the concerning situation. During times of fear and uncertainty, the very best elements of human nature can prevail, and there is still, cause for optimism.
faced with many challenges and need a balanced education encompassing academic skills and a tool box for life. That’s why we continue to develop a range of Programs designed to equip our girls with confidence, respect, tolerance, courtesy and resilience skills they need to have to deal with many of the complex issues that confront them as they move through school and into adulthood. At Pittwater House we want students to extend their thinking, to be resilient and good humoured when things get difficult, and to understand they can and will make a difference. I would like to thank all the student leaders for their help and support throughout the year. So many have been wonderful role models and worked as a team to ensure that traditions are maintained, and new ideas are implemented. Finally, I would also like to congratulate so many of our students. Walking around the grounds I realize how lucky we are. Many Pittwater House students give of their time to help others, and we are part of a wonderful community that does care about each other. Ms Lorna Probst
Once back at school during Form time students have had the opportunity to think about their goals, both academic and personal, and many of the sessions focused on the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for students to develop the skills to become a resilient individual. The staff at Pittwater House understand that in today’s society, in particular with what has transpired, young girls are
37
Message from the Head of Grammar I would firstly like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Nancy Hillier, Ms Lorna Probst, Mr James Walmsley and other members of the Executive for taking the time and effort to welcome me into the Pittwater House community this year.
Head of Grammar, Mr David Heath
It has been an honour to take on the role of Head of Grammar and to be a part of the tradition of Pittwater House School. One of my main goals for 2020 was to ensure that I got a good understanding of the culture of the School. Therefore, the highlight for me has been working with the Year Co-ordinators, the Student Leaders, all students and all staff, and in particular the staff from my faculty, PDHPE. This work has allowed me to gain a better concept of what it is to be part of Pittwater House. The Student Leaders from the Grammar School must have a special mention in what has been such an unorthodox year. Alexander Butcher, Head Prefect must be admired for both his resilience and his leadership of such a strong Prefect team. Alexander has shown the Pittwater House community that he embodies the HEROIC values of the School on almost a daily basis. Thank you Alexander, for all that you have done for the Grammar School in your time. Benjamin Cook, Deputy Head Prefect has led the Big Bro’s program throughout 2020. He has been a driving force in ensuring this student-led initiative is part of what we do at Pittwater House and it is the primary role of the 2021 Deputy Head Prefect to continue this fantastic work. While I would like to thank all the Grammar Prefects for their dedication to their role, I must make particular mention of the House Captains. Many of the traditional House events were cancelled throughout the year due to COVID-19 restrictions. In response to this, Sean Ealey, Matthew Howard and Ethan Rodgers worked with their College counterparts to develop the
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
concept of a House Cup. The House Cup tradition has been started and will become an annual event for both College and Grammar students in the future. The Pastoral Program has had to be heavily modified throughout 2020. This has forced us, as with many schools, to find new ways of positively influencing the students’ decision making. Formal one-onone conversations between Form Teachers and their students occurred throughout the second semester of 2020. Understanding and knowing the student is the main focus of the Form Teacher and formal conversations that concentrate on the stage of learning of the student has allowed the development of a stronger connection between the teacher and student. Thank you to all Grammar Form Teachers for the care and concern they show towards the students within their care. Finally, thank you to all members of the Pastoral Care team. This team consists of Year Co-ordinators, Form Teachers, Counsellors and Learning Enrichment staff. My observations are that they are an amazing group of professionals that have the student at the centre of their decision making on a daily basis. I have admired their dedication and am looking forward to working with them on continually improving what we do to ensure the student has every chance to develop their gifts. Mr David Heath
Message from the College Head Prefect Fulfilling the role as College Head Prefect in 2019/2020 has truly been an amazing opportunity that I will forever be grateful for. This experience has been rewarding and challenging. It has reasserted my understanding of the importance of compassion, teamwork and resilience, all of which our Prefect team has embodied throughout our leadership journey. College Head Prefect, Gracie Carpenter
When Alex and I commenced our role, we asked all Pittwater House students to strive to be the best version of themselves: to challenge themselves, to grasp every opportunity and to apply themselves in all situations presented to them. Undoubtedly, all students have done just this. The Prefect team and I are extremely proud of the way in which all College and Grammar students have adapted their everyday lives in the face of unprecedented change and challenges encountered this year. Alex and I believe Pittwater House will always be more than a place of education. It is our team, our support network and our family. Despite
numerous inconveniences with COVID-19, Deputy Head Prefects Ben and Sophie have a done an outstanding job with Big Bro’s and CUP Groups. They have continued to strengthen relationships across Year groups and provide guidance to the younger years as they navigate their way through Secondary School. On behalf of the leadership team, we acknowledge that the goals and legacy we set out to achieve this year have been vastly altered. However, the challenges we have encountered forced us to adapt and ultimately shaped us into strong, resilient, men and women. This forms the fundamental base of our legacy. We hope all students moving forward into 2021 at Pittwater House have been inspired by our commitment and persistence, taking on board the lessons learnt and applying this in the years to come. Gracie Carpenter

Message from the Grammar Head Prefect The 2020 school year has been a year like no other in the history of Pittwater House.
Grammar Head Prefect, Alexander Butcher
A global pandemic, social distancing, community lockdowns, remote learning, attending school assembly in The Great Hall whilst sitting in our classrooms and cancellation after cancellation of school events.
This 2020 school year has been full of uncertainties and overwhelming change. But we have not been alone, our family and our teachers have supported us and guided us through some difficult times.
In January this year when Gracie and I addressed the School in the first Great Hall assembly, we challenged the Pittwater House student body to be ready to make the most of every opportunity in the 2020 school year.
On behalf of all the Pittwater House students I would like to thank them for being there beside us, supporting, encouraging and caring about our well-being.
We asked everyone to work harder at being a better version of themselves. We challenged them to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. And we talked about making the most of every opportunity. Well, undoubtedly 2020 has presented numerous challenges and opportunities that have tested our limits and forced us to work harder. However, it is during times like this that our School character and our self-belief are forged. When our School routine moved to remote online learning, we had to adapt quickly to a new medium and method of education. We communicated and learnt online, via Zoom, with our teachers and classmates. In the 58-year history of Pittwater House, this is the first-time students have been educated whilst being absent from the classroom. The isolation and disconnection changed our thinking and our expectations. We had to push ourselves to ask more questions and look for more answers. I have said many times during my 12 months as Head Prefect that Pittwater House is more than just a place of education. It is our team, our club, our family and it is our sense of belonging.
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
I am also proud to say that all of us have shown resilience, courage and determination. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge my fellow Year 12 students. Gracie and I are lucky that we have had a wonderful group of people to share our final year of school with. We have remained positive and optimistic despite missing out on many of our final School year activities and occasions. We have dealt with isolation, change and uncertainty and we have endured disappointment and as a result we are now better versions of ourselves. I wish the Year 12 students all the very best with their exams. There will be highs and lows, lots of hard work, eye popping stress levels and cyclonic mood swings but we will endure and I believe that Pittwater House will be proud of our final achievements. And remember that on your last day when you’re walking out of school for the final time, it might feel like the end but it is only the beginning. Alexander Butcher
Message from the Grammar Deputy Head Prefect This year I have had the privilege to run the Grammar’s student led pastoral program, The Big Brogram. Despite the interruptions caused by COVID-19, the program has remained a driving force for student well-being through what has been a year the likes of which we may never see again. With the support of the senior Big Bro’s and Mr Heath, I have been able to build on the foundation I inherited from Naveen and last year’s Prefect team.
Lives Matter Movement. These topics aimed to get students thinking beyond our local Northern Beaches bubble. I think the program has the potential to be further embedded into the Pittwater House experience to become a stalwart of school life for many years to come and to ensure this I look forward to working with my successor.
This year, we have been focussing on being better and more supportive mates to one another. Discussions have been centred around banter, ethical by-standing and mental health. We also looked at the pandemic, and Indigenous Australians in line with National Reconciliation Week and the Black
I am eternally grateful to have been given the opportunity to give something back to the School through the Big Brogram and hope that the Grammar School boys have enjoyed participating as much as I have enjoyed developing the sessions. Benjamin Cook
Message from the College Prefect This past year I have had the privilege to be a Prefect at Pittwater House with the specific role of being the Junior and Senior School liaison. I have endeavoured to unite and create harmony between the Senior and Junior School and form bonds between the two Schools. I believe that it is vital for younger students to be able to interact with older students in the Senior School, as mentors and friends as it enables guidance and support as they have someone to look up to. I have created programs to enact this, through a Prefect buddies initiative and Year 11 homework help for Junior School students. Due to COVID-19 many programs were unable to
be carried out, however I hope to leave my legacy to an upcoming Prefect to provide programs such as Kindergarten reading, joint musical items with the Junior and Senior School students in which they are able to practise a musical item together and then have the opportunity to perform at either the Junior or Senior School assembly. I believe that this will be able to build stronger relationships between both Schools and create lifelong memories. Ginger Mahoney

Message from the Environment Prefect The TPHS Environment and Sustainability Group has come a long way since its foundation at the beginning of the 2019 school year. Our extra-curricular body was born after a group of staff and students recognised the need for and importance of ensuring the School’s sustainable future, and with a number of potential projects, we were on our way. Over the past twelve months, we have written and received a number of local grants, organised a series of fundraising initiatives, improved upon the School’s paper recycling system, combated plastic waste and developed a community garden. The TPHS community garden is one of my proudest achievements as Environment Prefect. In the span of six months, we turned a blank plot of grass next to the Senior Science labs into a self-sustaining garden and compost system that is now supplying the canteen with fresh produce – from herbs, to lettuce and tomatoes. The garden was designed with sustainable practices in mind and as a result, three compost heaps were also constructed to supplement the garden beds with fresh fertiliser. Not only has our compost system benefited the garden, as a school we have also significantly improved
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
upon our ecological footprint as fruit, vegetable and coffee scraps from the canteen, and staffrooms, have been redirected from landfill to the oncampus composting system. The ‘Give it a Grow’ is another memorable part of my role in Year 12. This Award is offered at weekly assemblies to an individual who has taken active steps to improve upon their own and/or our School’s sustainability efforts. As a senior student and leader, it has also been an honour to engage with students from across all years of the Senior School who have sacrificed their own time for the group and the wider School community. Not only have these students been integral to the longevity of the group, the growing involvement has actively helped in shifting the School’s culture in terms of environmental preservation. Lachlan Freund
Message from the SRC Prefects During this year as a part of the Prefect team, we set out to develop, revamp and reformat the Student Representative Council (SRC) to ensure that every student of Pittwater House has a voice in how the School is run. The SRC program has received many changes throughout the years. We have simplified the system to allow for a highly productive and efficient program – we’ve reduced the number of SRC representatives per year to minimise miscommunication. The representatives now meet with their entire Year group in their Year group meetings before coming together with all the SRC representatives from Years 7-11 to discuss what their peers believe are concerns. This feedback is taken
directly to Dr Hillier, where impactful and positive changes are discussed, developed, and deployed. While our time in the SRC was unfortunately cut short, we hope our changes give the SRC the impetus it needs to propel itself in the future and that our successor SRC Prefects will capitalise on this structure, using it as a springboard for the future prosperity of the SRC program. Message from the SUO There is much to be said about the direction of Cadets over this past year. Despite the effect of COVID-19 on training, the Unit has continued to show both Captain McClean and the SUO their utmost dedication to the program. The transitionary period in Term 4 last year saw the Unit develop in many ways. As SUO, I have always believed that an emphasis on a practical approach to learning should be at the core of what we do, especially regarding training recruits. This is something that was steadily implemented with frequent practical scenarios which combined theory with a field exercise mindset. When examining the achievements of the Unit, it seems only fitting to look to ANZAC Day, and this year was no different. Whilst social distancing prevented large gatherings and traditional services from taking place, the spirit of the Cadets was by no means quashed. Many members of the Unit, ranging from Years 7-12, stood out on their driveways bearing ceremonial dress in the early hours of the morning to show their solidarity and respect for the ANZACs. The reputation of the Cadet Unit can only be accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members, and this year has produced once more some outstanding
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
individuals. There are seldom opportunities for ordinary people to take command of a situation, apply what they’ve learnt and show others - and themselves - what they have to offer. As SUO, I wholeheartedly believe that, whilst Cadets teaches fundamental practical skills, the experiences, and values it instils remain more relevant than ever in our current climate. Those who are not exposed to challenging situations are simply equipped for failure. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. I feel this attitude encapsulates what Cadets seeks to embody. It has been a privilege as well as an honour to have had the opportunity to lead such a brilliant group of young people, and I am thankful to everyone who contributed in their own unique way to the Unit. Ewan Lund
House Reports Though this year has hit many Butterworthians hard, we have attempted to launch initiatives to push Butterworth into the number one position. To focus on the positives, the House Games initiative spearheaded by Butterworth House Captain Sean Ealey became an instant success, seeing Year groups compete against each other in their Houses with competitions such as soccer, trivia, paper plane making and dodgeball. Through this, we tried to focus on true house spirit. While this was short-lived, we are hoping the 2021 House Captains will be able to continue this with not as many interruptions. Another thing we pushed for this year was House Noticeboards, to show off Butterworth House spirit and photos of some of our star Butterworthians. This board is providing us as House Captains with both communication with the wider School, and the ability to continue to show off the House we love. Being House Captains has come with some amazing moments that
we will miss. Georgie’s favourite of course stemming from her work on the College Performing Arts pieces showcased early in the school year. The way our School, and most importantly, Butterworth, can come together and create pieces of such high quality will always amaze her. For Sean, the Grammar Swimming Carnival (the last carnival we were able to have) will be missed as we move away from our times in Senior School. The chanting, the yelling and the singing portrayed by the boys of Butterworth, is truly something to be seen, and the same can be said for the College. To conclude, we are both extremely thankful for the position we have been given both as House Captains, and as Prefects. Our time here will never be forgotten. Thank you Butterworthians for making this year, and our time at Pittwater House, so special. Georgia Fisk and Sean Ealey

House Reports As the new Morgan House Captains for 2020 our major goal was to dramatically increase House spirit so that all “Morganites” felt connected and involved. Little did we suspect the unprecedented challenges the year would throw us or how even more important connection and involvement would feel as a result. Despite 2020’s curve balls, encouraging members to “give it a go for Morgan” delivered a swell of House spirit and record participation rates, much to our delight. Morgan has cheered itself to many sweet victories this year, taking out the Swimming and Athletics for both College and Grammar. In addition, College won the Performing Arts Night and the hotly contested Foundation Day Relay. These successes clearly came not on the back of specific talented individuals but as a result of a collective Morgan effort. We could not be more proud! Collaborating with our fellow House Captains to create and manage the first ever House Cup has been a positive addition to the year. This,
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
along with the creation of the House Board, marks the beginning of some great new traditions at Pittwater House and is a great legacy for our team. On a personal level the roles as House Captain have given us both huge opportunities to explore our strengths and grow as leaders. Developing bonds with the younger students has been a particular pleasure. Seeing first-hand the difference we could make has been a wonderful gift that we shall both gratefully carry into our futures. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be the Captains of Morgan House for 2020. Matthew Howard and Megan Shaw
House Reports Over the past year, we have experienced the cancellation and limitation of many highly anticipated School events. However, as House Captains, we still maintained a common goal of creating camaraderie within Orrock House, to produce a level of enthusiasm at earlier events, such as the swimming carnival and inter-house competitions as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved. At the end of 2019, the College and Grammar participated in College Performing Arts and Brofest respectively. During these events the participation, enthusiasm and interactions between all Year groups allowed for friendships to be formed and a connecting bond between many of the Year groups. The Head Above Water 24-hour swim was an amazing opportunity to participate in, as mental health has been a key focus over the past year for all involved Prefects. It was great to see many other students down at the Collaroy pool supporting or participating in this valued charity. As Orrock House Captains, we value the idea of promoting house spirit and participation at future school
events. As a result, we created an Orrock House board. This board displays important notifications along with a collage of photos of Orrock house members that have been collected throughout the year. Furthermore, in third Term, all House Prefects created and started a House Cup initiative which involves inter-House competitions each week, consisting of a range of activities from trivia to dodge ball. This is aimed to boost camaraderie and competition within each House. Overall, we would like to thank everyone for giving us the opportunity to represent Orrock House in this eventful year. We wish everyone the best for the years to come. Ethan Rogers and Alexandra Fordy

Creative Arts The Creative and Performing Arts Faculty has seen a lot of growth in the co-curricular and curricular performing arts. The challenge for the faculty for the first part of 2020 was adapting our performing arts program as COVID restrictions tested the resilience and flexibility of the faculty and students. We finished 2019 with a range of performances that showcased the talent of the students in drama, dance and music. We began planning for our 2021 production ‘High School Musical’ at the start of 2020 through our weekly Show Choir rehearsals and held auditions. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 virus, we have had to postpone the production, but we are looking forward to presenting when the environment allows. As the Faculty grows, we are seeing a greater number of students exploring the performing arts. The Year 3 and 4 Band Program has allowed many students to experience the joys of learning an instrument and social connection through band sessions. Our Junior Band has benefitted with a steady increase in membership over the last few years. The same steady increase in participation and membership has been experienced in our Senior School Performance Band, Symphonic Winds, Show Choir and String Ensembles. Several of our Music students represented Pittwater House at the 2019 HICES Music Festival and were featured for the seventh year
THE PITTWATERMAN 2019/2020
running in the Manly Dam Trust Remembrance Day Service. Our Dance program continues to expand under the guidance of Mrs Elise Tamatea. The interest in the study of Drama is continuing to grow within the School, with higher numbers of students choosing elective Drama in Year 9. Anticipating an increase in interest for 2020, Mrs Tamatea was been appointed as the Co-ordinator of Dance and Drama. At Pittwater House, Performing Arts disciplines are being taught by specialist teachers from Kindergarten to Year 12. We now benefit from the delivery of Music from Kindergarten to Year 12, Dance from Kindergarten to Year 12, Visual Arts from Year 3 to Year 12, Drama from Year 5 to Year 12, and Photography in Year 9 and Year 10. In 2020, we have introduced a Year 5 and 6 program which gives the students the opportunity to explore the performing arts holistically to create works that engage in all aspects of the Performing Arts curriculum. “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” – Maya Angelou David Cosentino
