14 March 2018

As our School grows in its complexity, the opportunities for students to take on roles and experience leadership is developing further. This is not limited to a sporting team or a lead role in the creative arts but manifests itself in all manner of classroom situations. These are all powerful moments; times to be fostered and students challenged. And so it should be for you at home, finding these times in your family structure to support the developing independence of your children. In the busyness of a school day, there are multiple interactions of a special nature, all deserving of a moment to pause and reflect on the wider implications of the lesson being learned… whilst the nation paused last Sunday to Clean Up Australia, Pittwater House had its own version with students from Year 1 making their mark, and secondary students rising to the challenge in their lunch time… all examples of students experiencing and understanding leadership. I am delighted to hear students discuss their collective desire for environmental maturity whilst additionally, I know the topic is discussed in many parts of the curriculum across our School. The Junior School’s Waste Free Wednesday is impacting as we chip away at some of the more obvious areas of waste. This is a community endeavour and we all need to support the efforts of those who seek to protect our land and waterways for future generations.

There is some fine coaching from both senior students and external coaches, all of whom are accredited in their role. The performances will take place on the 5th and 6th of April at 7pm in the Creative Arts Centre. Tickets will be available for purchase shortly. Performers have been working intensively over the last seven weeks, to bring this year’s Senior Play to life. ‘Whale’ by David Holman, is a family oriented, light hearted piece, with a significant environmental message and a strongly positive outlook on international diplomacy. The cast have been using puppetry and physical theatre techniques to create the harsh world of the Alaskan north. The story highlights the influence of children and ‘pester power’ to bring about significant change for good. Younger audience members will be able to identify with the story and characters easily and will be swept away on the crazy journey, which actually happened, in three weeks, during the autumn of 1988. DEBATING NEWS Debating Incursion – Skills workshop On Monday 26 February, Knowledge Pods educators came to Pittwater House to teach the students some key skills to prepare them for HICES Debating. We ran two sessions to allow for both Year 7 and 8 students to learn foundational skills especially useful for new debaters and another session for Year 9 and 10 students to extend their developing skills in rebuttal, argument and structure. After learning some relevant skills, the students had 45 mins to prepare for a short debate. They received specific feedback after each speaker to ensure the Middle Division students gain some relevant points to improve. Overall it was a very successful day and the students learnt a lot in preparation for their Round 1 debates the following day. HICES Round 1 Middle Teams: Years 7 and 8 On February 26 the young men and women of the Middle A, B, C and D debating teams fought their first battles. Josh Singh, Asha Franklin, Ciara Denton and Hannah Bosland from TPHS B began with a stroke of luck when their opposition had prepared for the wrong side of the debate. The students from Pittwater House showed compassion and courteously allowed their opponents time to arrange a new plan of attack. Nevertheless, the students from Pittwater House stood strong and spoke confidently to secure their first win. The Middle A and Middle C teams experienced their first formal debate against each other. TPHS C won the debate and Finnegan Marshall was deemed the best debater. Our Middle D team debated against St Lukes Grammar School and also won their round. The adjudicator identified Alannah Morgante as being the best speaker. It was a very strong start from the Pittwater House Middle debating teams and each of the participants should be proud of their efforts. Senior Teams: Year 9 & 10 This year we have three Senior teams who have all been debating for many years. But this year they have the opportunity to do impromptu debates. This is a huge challenge for them, having only 1 hour to discuss the topic, delegate roles and points and develop a speech and argument for the debate. All students worked well together in their teams to argue the topic ‘That Facebook has irrevocably changed the nature of friendship’. TPHS B debated against TPHS A and Ginger Maloney, Callum Metzke, Milka Jovic and Lachlan Freund were able to successfully convince the adjudicator of their argument. Ginger Maloney, Paris Hallet and Callum Metzke were identified as being best debaters so they should be commended for their efforts and their strong manner and speaking. Open Team: Year 11 & 12 Our seasoned debaters: Lydia Caitlin-Struthers, Lara Huby-Stewart, Ryan Garay and Ashley Potter took on their old foes Arden for their first debate on “Hashtagging# trivialises worthy causes”. Our team were the affirmative and gave a solid performance drawing on their own personal experience and knowledge. It is always impressive to watch the students debate, with only an hour’s preparation. They are able to develop a coherent and logical argument literally ‘on the go’ and they make it look easy! Unfortunately, this time round they were defeated by a margin based on a technicality. Not to worry, we will have another chance for victory later in the year! Mrs Anna Cameron, Secondary Stage 4 Leader, College FROM THE LIBRARY

In honour of International Women’s Day, the library has got together a small selection of our wonderful books which are written by women, about women, to inspire and support women! Enjoy!

Senior School We have just purchased a two new sets of fantasy books by Robin Hobb, one of George R. R. Martin’s favourite authors. Her series of books are a doorway into a huge, interconnected world, which spans decades, continents and leadership changes. Very exciting reads. Please ensure that your child is aware that mobile phone use is not permitted in the library and laptops are only to be used for educational purposes. Junior School Due to popular demand, we have received our second copy of Cherub. This series focuses around a division of the British Security Service called CHERUB, which employs children, predominantly orphans, under the age of 17, as intelligence agents. The latest Scholastics Book Club magazine has arrived! Please place any orders by 26 March 2018. Please continue to encourage your children to keep reading for the PRC! All reading logs, user names and passwords are in the process of being handed out to the Year 3-6 students. Your child’s username is stapled to the front page of their diary and the reading log is in the plastic sleeve at the back. Please remind your children to return their books in their library bag. This can be in any fabric bag. Thank you for your support! Ms Kayte Eyre, Head Librarian – Senior School

Junior School News FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLS With Friday 16 March flagged as the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, the students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be actively demonstrating their stance on bullying: raising awareness of the nonacceptance of violence of any type. Working together on a House challenge provides the opportunity to pull together as a School Community for a common goal against such insidious behaviour. This week, bespoke Awareness Ribbons designed by us to wear for this day of action will be able to be purchased for a $2 coin donation. The funds raised will go to Westmead Children’s Hospital. Prefects and Leaders will be selling these at lunch. On Friday 16 March, all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will need to wear Sports Uniform to School to take part in special House Games organised by Mr Writer. Harmony Day, 21 March, celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common. The central message for Harmony Day is that ‘everyone belongs’, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. The Kindergarten to Year 2 students are looking closely at this message during organised activities on this day. The Years K-2 Swimming Carnival has a new date. This event will now take place on Thursday 29 March, one week later than advertised. Unfortunately, the CIS Swimming Carnival is scheduled for the original date leaving us without the necessary members of staff to run the carnival. At the CIS Swimming Carnival, 20 Pittwater House students will be swimming as part of the HICES team. This is an outstanding number of representatives, with Pittwater House students making up approximately half of the HICES team, from a possible 14 other schools. The Junior School Swim Team won Division 1 at the HICES carnival in spectacular style. Thank you to all parents who came to support the students on the day. Mrs Ruth Achurch, Head of Junior Schools

FROM THE ECC I cannot believe how fast the term is flying by. It is so lovely to see the children finding their feet with new friends and old, discovering what it is they love to do and how comfortable they are becoming within their environment. Over the past couple of weeks, the Bilbies have been working hard on completing their identity projects. This is comprised of a photograph, a hand drawn self-portrait, a hand print and foot print, and some information all about them. This project will enable the children to learn not only about themselves, but also about each other. Outcome 1 of the EYLF is all about the children building a strong sense of identity. As children are developing their sense of identity, they explore different aspects of it (physical, social, emotional, spiritual, cognitive), through their play and their relationships. This project is helping the Bilbies to develop their feeling of belonging, and when children feel safe, secure and supported they grow in confidence to explore and learn. The Ringtail Possum children have recently had the honour to meet up with their new buddies and spend a little time discovering their interests and special skills. The benefits of having a buddy program are abundantly rewarding as it offers the opportunity for the older children to learn how to take on the responsibility of being a positive role model, whilst giving the younger children, someone to look up too. However, our buddy is not just about promoting friendship and admiration, it also provides us with a sense of whole-school community. Our connections with the wider school environment become established further, as do our learning opportunities through these valuable collaborations.

Mrs Andrea Murray, ECC Co-ordinator

BASKETBALL Year 6 Pittwater Kings v Manly West Warriors (28 Feb). Lost 18-27. The Kings had a slow start as they seemed hesitant to play last years champs. By second half though, they found their game and started scoring baskets. Luke Avello broke the stalemate and scored 2, Mia Edgar scored 8, Connor Costello 2, Mitch Mathews 2, Ruby Sinclair 2 and Ted Chambers 2. Year 6 Pittwater Kings v St Lukes Rangers (7 March). Won 33-17. Mitch Mathews may have shot the first 2 points and Ted Chambers scored the last 4 but it was Danny Morabito who was the Player-of the-Match with his stand out 16 points. All our regular shooters showed up and contributed: Luke Avello 2, Mia Edgar 2, Connor Costello 3, Ruby Sinclair 2 and Mitch Mathews 4 to secure a victory. G7 Pittwater Celtics v St Lukes Navy (26Feb). Lost 9-32. After a very positive first half where we trailed by only a few points, the second half was a little disappointing and the boys lost 32-9. Defensive pressure is an area that needs improvement as our opposition were afforded too many rebounds and easy access to the basket. Special mention goes to Edward Hutt who had a great first half and inspired the team with some determined play. G7 Pittwater Celtics v Pittwater High (5 March). Lost 10-26. Our opponents were much taller which made rebounding challenging, but to the boys’ credit they tried really hard, eventually going down 26-10. Bailey Spitzer had a solid game with some good shooting, but in the end, it is very difficult to win games when the opposition is afforded most of the possession. C9 Pittwater Jazz v St Lukes Blue (7 March). Won 20-10. Great game played by everyone. Great defence from Alex, Sophie and Indie. Awesome shooting from Molly, Jenna, Emily, Laila and Gabi. CDSSA Basketball Teams Congratulations to the students who have been selected into the following CDSSA teams: U15 Girls Basketball Team 1) Teyha Felsher 2) Emily Hicks 3) Kasey Pickering 4) Charlotte Taylor

Our top batting pairs were: Nic Butcher and Zak Rogers 46, Conner Costello and Oliver Whitely 21, Luke Avello and Campbell Marks 23, Harry McCracken and Max Thompson 36. Catches taken by Max Thompson, Luke Avello and Zak Rogers. Well played boys! P5/6 PISA Cricket Team v Oxford Falls (2 March). Lost 34-62. Our running between the wickets was poor in this match and we had three run outs. Our best batting pair were Zak Rogers and Nic Butcher who put on 18 runs together. Best Bowlers were Harry McCracken 2 wickets (he bowled some excellent leg spin) and Conner Costello 1 wicket. Run outs to Oliver Whitely and Oscar Pople. On Wednesday 7 March, the Pittwater House Junior School sent their swimming champions to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre to compete in the annual HICES Swimming Championships. After winning the carnival for the last two years, expectations were high. Our students did not disappoint with an amazing day of swimming. Five years ago, we were trying to fight our way out of Division 2 and each year we keep improving. The lowest place we got all day was 5th (5 times) out of 8 swimmers. We also had five 4th places, seven 3rd places, a massive twenty-two 2nd places and a whopping 27 1st place finishes! Outstanding! Those results included a 1st place for our Junior Girls, Senior Girls and Junior Boys relay teams. The Senior boys came a respectable 3rd. Noah Maggs, a new member of Pittwater House, and five times record breaker at our school carnival had an incredible day, winning all but butterfly and breaking the 50m HICES breastroke record for the 10 years age group. His new record is 44.46sec. Congratulations Noah. After the dust has settled the HICES team has been announced to compete at the CIS carnival on the 22nd March. Pittwater House has a record number of students competing with an enormous 20 students attending. TENNIS Tennis Coaching We will be continuing our successful before school, lunchtime and after school programs at the Pittwater House School’s tennis court (behind the main reception area). This is a fantastic way for your child to learn and develop new skills and get involved with the Tennis Australia accredited Hotshots program. We are also involved with the popular Tennis Northern Beaches Saturday morning competition which gives your child the best environment to further their tennis experience. Contact Mr Les Hegyessy on: 0402 731 196 or Mr Oliver Cordell on: 0403 833 293. CIS JUNIOR TENNIS Selection Trials Kameko Burns (J5), took part in the selection trials for the CIS Junior Girls Tennis team for 2018. The event was held at Kings School and saw the top 20 Independent Schools Junior Girls tennis players play each other to find the top four to represent the CIS Schools Team. Kameko played 5 best of 4 game matches during the day, she won 3 and lost 2. Her effort on the day was impressive as she took out two of the top seeds for the event who were both Year 6 girls from the powerful IPSHA Association of schools. As this was a State-wide event for all Independent Schools, there were students competing from Wagga to Byron Bay. Well done Kameko for your fine effort although you missed the team you played very well throughout the day against the best talent in NSW. NSW ALL SCHOOLS TRIATHLON 2018 Recently we had several of our Senior School students competing in the NSW All Schools Triathlon at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. On the first day the Individual events were held and Conner Maggs (G7), took part in the Junior event. Conner raced over a 400m Swim, 10km Cycle and 3km Run course. He finished 91st Overall out of 256 starters and 28th in CIS Schools out of 61. Well done to Conner in this gruelling event. The following day were the team events. We entered two Junior teams one female and one male, and one Intermediate Boys team. Junior Boys: Connor Maggs, Levi Smith and Tom McPherson placed 48th overall out of 150 schools around NSW; Junior Girls: Olivia Butcher, Jaime Cummins and Zara Ostryn placed 224th overall out of 300 schools around NSW and the Intermediate Boys: George Richardson, Ben Cook and Alex Butcher placed 56th overall out of 200 schools around NSW. Well done teams that was a great effort in this massive State-wide event.

WATER POLO Breakers Development Competition Pittwater Dolphins v Stella Red (23 Feb). Won 10-1. This result was very pleasing given the hard game our girls played the previous week. Combinations and ball movement are developing with each week and the results are testimony to how hard the girls are working to ensure any team that beats them will have had to play well on the night. Well done everyone. Pittwater Dolphins v Stella Green (2 March). Won 9-3. Our team was seriously depleted due to players having other commitments on the night. With no replacements the remaining 6 players gave it everything they had and the result was well earned. Fabulous effort girls. Ms Sue Grigg, Manager of Sports and Co-curricular Activities
