and her fellow workers’ various anguished reactions to her plea make for riveting viewing. Cotillard is electric in the lead role and the film thoroughly deserves the awards it has picked up on the festival circuit.

Reminiscent of the Coen’s Blood Simple and Tarantino’s failed heist in Reservoir Dogs, We Gotta Get Out of This Place slots alongside recent films Cold in July and Blue Ruin in a mini-revival of the American indie thriller, and marks a terrific feature debut for director brothers Simon and Zeke. Deciding to rip off their cotton mill boss – but not aware of his links to organised crime – teenage friends BJ and Bobby are drawn into the seedy Texan underworld.

Marvel, the creators of global phenomenon Iron Man, bring you a movie starring Bradley Cooper as a hostile racoon and Vin Diesel as a walking, talking tree. What could possibly go wrong? Well, stealing a weird orb from an evil mastermind intent on destroying the galaxy should do the trick. Guardians follows Peter Quill – AKA ‘Star Lord’ – and his dysfunctional band of rebels as they battle to save the universe. Refusing to take itself too seriously, it’s irreverent and blissful entertainment.

Cinema a century ago was a new, exciting and highly democratic form of entertainment. With feature films still rare, the programme was an entertaining, ever-changing roster of short items; a glorious miscellany of comedies, dramas, travelogues and newsreels. This compilation from the BFI National Archive brings together a typical night out in 1914, including a sensational episode of The Perils of Pauline, scenes of Allied troops celebrating Christmas at the front, and an early sighting of one of cinema’s greatest icons.

an Indian restaurant opens just across the road. Clashing with the Kadam family and in particular the determined patriarch ‘Papa’ (Puri), Madame Mallory sets about sabotaging their restaurant – beginning with buying up the town’s entire supply of ingredients on her competitor’s opening night!

As a grudging respect develops, despite their cold war, a funny and heart warming tale unfolds; whilst the burgeoning romance between Mallory and Papa adds a dash of spice.

Robin Wright plays a fictionalised version of herself – an aging, out-of-work actress who decides to quit showbiz, but will first sell her image to a movie studio so they can create an animated clone of her younger self to star in CGI blockbuster movies. Bizarre and mesmerising, The Congress is a true one-off, a hypnotic blend of live-action and animation from Waltz with Bashir director Ari Folman.

This showing is offered to all by the Leicester French Circle who extend a warm welcome to all those interested in French culture. For details see leicesterfrenchcircle.co.uk. Nicolas is a young boy living a blissful suburban life with his mother and father, spending time enjoying school and playing with friends. Disaster strikes, however, when he overhears news his mother is pregnant! Thinking the baby will replace him, Nicolas sets out to be the best son he can be.

Destined to be this year’s The Full Monty, this new British production is a life-affirming and uplifting movie, set during the National Union of Mineworkers’ strike in the summer of 1984. Based on a true story, a group of gay and lesbian activists raise money for the miners, but are faced with suspicion and animosity from the historically macho mining

community. Deciding to take the money directly to a small mining village in the Welsh valleys, the older members of the town must forge an uneasy alliance so the community can survive. Bighearted, moving and very funny, it features stellar performances from Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake),

Bill Nighy (NT Live’s Skylight), Paddy Considine (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher) and Dominic West (The Wire).

Based on Jussi Alder-Olsen’s bestseller, The Keeper of Lost Causes follows Detective Carl Mørk, an outcast in his unit following a fatal shooting, who is reassigned to Department Q – a cellar full of cold case files. With the help of his new

assistant Assad (and much to the annoyance of their superiors) Mørk reopens an old case concerning the disappearance of a politician believed to have committed suicide. A Scandi nail-biter perfect for fans of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Headhunters.

This new film from Meek's Cutoff director Reichardt is a low-key but utterly absorbing thriller following three radical environmentalists who decide to blow up a hydroelectric dam in rural Oregon. The trio – tightly wound Josh (Eisenberg), his girlfriend Dena (Fanning) and enigmatic former marine Harmon (Sarsgaard) – are obsessed with ‘making a statement’ but their carefully laid plan goes awry. A moral conundrum with no easy answers; it’s bold and intelligent movie making.

This new thriller is based on the true story of a family who unknowingly welcomed Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele ‘The Angel of Death’ into their home following his escape from Germany. Assuming a new identity upon arrival in Patagonia, Wakolda moves into a hotel run by Eva and husband Enzo – but the couple are alarmed when he develops an unhealthy interest in their 12-yearold daughter and Eva’s pregnancy. Filled with raw suspense and lurking tension.

Screening in partnership with the Leicester International Music Festival and introduced by the director. The framework of Tony Palmer’s film is a recording of the Dvorˇ ák Cello Concerto with the Czech Philharmonic and Julian Lloyd Webber. Interwoven is the story of Dvorˇ ák's unrequited love affair with Josefina (the beautiful older sister of his wife), and how her death from cancer caused him to tear up the last pages of the concerto and write the end which we all know.

This savagely-sleek horror thriller follows Nomura, a narcissistic Japanese serial killer who posts videos of his crimes online. When his work inspires failed Indonesian journalist Bayu to commit a murder (although vaguely more principled since he goes after a local crime kingpin), Nomura and Bayu develop a complex relationship that leads to an explosive climax. Exquisitely tense and VERY violent, Killers has drawn comparisons with I Saw the Devil and the early work of Takashi Miike.

Dir: Ben Russell, Ben Rivers Cast: Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe France/Germany/Estonia 2013, 1hr 38mins

Dir: Abel Ferrara Cast: Gérard Depardieu USA 2014, 2hrs 5mins

Dir: Andrew Dominik Cast: Casey Affleck, Brad Pitt USA 2007, 2hrs 40mins

Gérard Depardieu (Cyrano de Bergerac) plays George Devereaux, a fictionalised version of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former head of the International Monetary Fund. Devereaux lives a hedonistic self-indulgent life of wealth and sex, convinced he is above the law – until he’s arrested for sexually assaulting a maid in his New York hotel room. An explicit, shocking and full-blooded indictment of the super-rich and the modern world’s insatiable culture of greed.

Despite music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Roger Deakins as cinematographer and a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Sam Rockwell, Casey Affleck and Sam Shepard, Andrew Dominik’s film has remained criminally-underrated. A young 19-year-old who idolises Jesse James joins his gang, but becomes resentful of the power his hero wields over him. An epic, elegiac Western presented as it should be – on 35mm, on the big screen, where it can be rightly heralded as a masterpiece.

15

This new film from artists Ben Rivers (Two Years at Sea) and Ben Russell is a riveting piece of experimental filmmaking. Musician Robert AA Lowe (a.k.a. Lichens) plays a nameless man searching for utopia in the present day, through three loosely-connected chapters: a small commune in Estonia; the hills beneath the northern lights in Finland; and finally in a black metal band in Norway. A spiritual blend of documentary, fiction and breathtaking visuals.
