ART AT PHOENIX CANARY SONGS

4–5

Available as Silver Screenings – see p13

Sat 23 Apr, 4pm and 7pm Sun 24 Apr, 4pm Screen 2, £5, 45mins Canary Songs is a new sound and choral performance by the artist Teresa Dillon, inspired by the women who worked in UK munitions factories during World War One. These women were known as ‘Canary Girls’ as their skin and hair would turn yellow from exposure to TNT.

The performance uses an industrial background track drawn from archival material over which an all-female choir of 25 will sing to immerse the audience in a vocal score, creating an acoustic interpretation of the factory floor and how it would have sounded to the people who worked there.

Songs were often hummed and sung in the factories to raise the morale of the workers and give rhythm to their repetitive labour. Combined with the mechanical noises of the machinery, this created a remarkable environment which Canary Songs will recreate.

Canary Songs has focused particularly on the local Chilwell Shelling Factory, which was the largest such factory in the UK and provided most of the shells for the Battle of the Somme. In 1918 a massive explosion at the factory killed 132 people, 25 of whom were women.

Commissioned by Phoenix and The Cutting Room. Created/Directed: Teresa Dillon, Costume: Mia Morikawa, Acoustic Model: Zora Schärer Kalkandjiev, Choir Director: Lyndsey Cockwell, Choir: 25 volunteers

Killbox is an interactive installation and online game that explores the nature of drone warfare, its complexities and consequences, looking at the use of technology to transform and extend political and military power, and the abstraction of killing through virtualisation. Named after the military term used to describe an area on a grid map that a mission planner designates a target for destruction, Killbox immerses the audience in a fictionalised virtual environment based on documented drone strikes in Northern Pakistan. The work is an international collaboration between US based artist/activist Joseph DeLappe and Scotland-based artists and game developers Malath Abbas, Tom Demajo and Albert Elwin. This project was made possible with support fromTurbulence.org/New Radio and Performing Arts, NYC, USA; Phoenix; The Cutting Room, UK; and Creative Scotland.

FILM ANOMALISA

EDDIE THE EAGLE

Fri 1 – Thu 7 Apr Dir: Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman Cast: Jennifer Jason Leigh USA 2015, 1hr 30mins

PG

Fri 1 – Thu 14 Apr Dir: Dexter Fletcher Cast: Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman UK/USA/Germany 2016, 1hr 46mins This cracking crowd-pleaser about Britain’s most famous sporting underdog comes from the director of Sunshine on Leith. Following the plucky skier from his clumsy teenage years (broken glasses galore as he attempts track and field) through to his trying out for the Olympic skiing team, Eddie refuses to give up. Rejected by the fancy British

team because of his working class background, Eddie sets off to a training camp in Germany where he meets maverick ex-jumper Bronson Peary (Jackman). Persuading Bronson to be his coach, the two set their sights on the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. A feel-good and funny movie packed with heart.

- Anomalisa has more heart, soul and pathos than 99.9 per cent of live-action movies’ - Empire. After an 8 year absence, Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) returns with a daringly original stop-motion animation film. Marketing guru Michael (voiced by David Thewlis), on a business trip at a drab hotel, meets call-centre worker Lisa and sees a chance to escape the ennui that grips him.

Fri 1 – Tue 5 Apr Dir: Xavier Giannoli Cast: Catherine Frot France/ Belgium 2015, 2hrs 9mins, subtitled “Cover your ears and open your hearts”. Based on the story of Florence Foster Jenkins (the subject of another film next month starring Meryl Streep) this witty French satire begins in Paris in the 1920s. Marguerite Dumont is a lover of music and the opera. She loves to sing for friends, although they’re too polite to point out she can’t sing. But the real problem begins when she decides she wants to perform for a real audience!

Fri 1 – Mon 4 Apr Dir: Tim Miller Cast: Ryan Reynolds USA/ Canada 2016, 1hr 48mins

Mon 4 – Thu 7 Apr Dir: Chaitanya Tamhane Cast: Usha Bane, Vivek Gomber India 2014, 1hr 56mins, subtitled

Ripped from the pages of Marvel Comics and now a huge global hit, The Merc with a Mouth has landed! Ryan Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative diagnosed with cancer who signs up for an experimental cure. Disfigured by the treatment but imbued with accelerated healing powers, Wade adopts the alter-ego of Deadpool and sets out to find those who almost killed him. Gloriously offensive, full of great set-pieces and shot through with a wicked sense of humour.

A damning indictment of India’s justice and caste system, Tamhane’s debut film follows ageing folk singer Narayan Kamble who is put on trial for abetment to suicide. Arrested under the farcical allegation that a sewage worker deliberately didn’t use safety gear after hearing one of Kamble’s rabble-rousing songs, the film intelligently explores the relationship and disparate lifestyles of the ‘untouchables’ and the elite of Indian society.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

12A

Fri 15 – Thu 28 Apr Dir: Jeff Nichols Cast: Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst USA 2015, 1hr 52mins

Based on J.G. Ballard’s dystopian novel, Tom Hiddleston stars as Robert Laing, a young doctor who moves into a luxury high-rise apartment block... but all is not as it seems. The building is split between the rich in their penthouses and the working class on the lower floors, and as the class divide begins to tear the building apart, people revert to their most savage instincts. Brutal, shocking and darkly funny, High-Rise is unlike anything else out this year.

From Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter), this new thriller follows Roy and Alton, a father and son on the run. Alton is different, possessing special powers that have convinced a fanatical cult he’s their messiah and the federal government that he’s a weapon, but Roy just wants to keep his boy safe. Another superb

film from one of the most exciting indie directors working in American cinema, Midnight Special has drawn comparisons with Spielberg's E.T. and Close Encounters. With a cracking cast that includes Sam Shepherd, Joel Edgerton and Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) it’s a thrilling ride.

Fri 15 – Thu 21 Apr Dir: Sebastian Schipper Cast: Laia Costa Germany 2015, 2hrs 18mins, subtitled

Based on real events that led to the 1960s Frankfurt Auschwitz trials in Germany, this new thriller follows idealistic young lawyer Johann Radmann who becomes interested in the case of a former Auschwitz camp commander turned high school teacher. Determined to bring him and other former Nazi members to justice, Johann finds opposition in the form of corrupt Government officials and a wider public who don’t want to confront past atrocities.

Winner of four Polish Film Awards and the Special Prize at Istanbul Film Festival, Papusza follows the rise and fall of Polish gypsy poet Bronislawa Wajs, known as Papusza. Defiantly learning to read against her family’s wishes, Papusza impresses fellow poet Jerzy Ficowski but his publication of her work led to friction with the gypsy community. Told in an episodic fashion that dips into various points of Papusza’s life, the film is exquisitely shot in black and white.

A landmark achievement in filmmaking, Schipper’s new thriller takes place over the course of one night in Berlin, filmed in a continuous take with no cuts. We meet happy-go-lucky Victoria as she dances in a club, before heading out and joining four merry young men mooching around the city. But things take an unexpected turn as the men owe a local crime boss a favour and Victoria is dragged in to help. A bold, gripping drama, Victoria flies by at a breathless pace.

Fri 22 – Thu 28 Apr Dir: Hirokazu Koreeda Cast: Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa Japan 2016, 2hrs 7mins, subtitled

Fri 22- Tue 26 Apr Dir: Tom Geens Cast: Paul Higgins, Kate Dickie UK/Belgium/France 2015, 1hr 45mins, subtitled (parts)

After the recent influx of dark and gritty world cinema, the latest from Japanese master Hirokazu Koreeda (I Wish, Like Father Like Son) feels like a dose of pure sunshine. After their estranged father passes away, three sisters attend his funeral only to meet their thirteen year old halfsister Suzu. Sensing she is unhappy they invite her to come and live with them in their grandmother’s creaky old house. A wonderful, uplifting tale of compassion and family love.

Scottish couple John and Karen live in a hole in rural France. John forages during the day, while Karen stays stitching blankets, afraid to leave the hole. As the tragedy that led them to this situation is gradually revealed, John and Karen’s sanctuary is threatened by the attentions of local townspeople. A truly unique film, it caused a small sensation at its Toronto Film Festival premiere and is superbly acted by the two leads.

Fri 22 – Thu 28 Apr Dir: Jacques Audiard Cast: Jesuthasan Antonythasan France 2015, 1hr 55mins, subtitled

Fri 22 – Mon 25 Apr Dir: Akira Kurosawa Cast: Tatsuya Nakadai Japan 1985, 2hrs 40mins, subtitled

Winner of the Palme d'Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Audiard’s (Rust and Bone) film is a compelling take on immigrant life. Posing as a family with a woman and young girl, Dheepan - a former Tamil fighter - flees the Sri Lankan civil war. Settling in France, the peace of their new life is shattered when a gang takes over their housing block. With his family threatened, Dheepan may be forced to revert to his warrior ways.

Returning to cinemas in a new 4K restoration thanks to Studiocanal and Japanese production company Kadokawa Pictures. When an ageing Japanese warlord decides to abdicate and divide his kingdom between his three sons, it sparks a civil war filled with treachery and vengeance. Loosely based on the story of a legendary feudal lord and reminiscent of Shakespeare’s King Lear, Kurosawa’s haunting, colour drenched epic deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Fri 29 Apr – Sun 1 May Dir: John Crowley Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson Ireland/UK/Canada 2015, 1hr 49mins One of our most popular films ever returns due to unprecedented demand. 1950s Ireland and young Eilis is leaving for America. Sponsored by a priest in Brooklyn, Eilis finds a job and lodgings with the no nonsense Mrs. Kehoe (Julie Walters). After initial homesickness, Eilis falls in love with her new life, but a tragedy back home means she must return to Ireland. Torn between two countries, she must decide where her heart lies.

Saul Ausländer, a worker in charge of disposing of fellow prisoners in an Auschwitz crematorium, finds the body of what he believes is his son. Setting himself the almost impossible task of hiding the body and tracking down a rabbi, Saul will go to any lengths to see the boy properly buried. A masterful exploration of cruelty, love and desperation that is almost overwhelmingly moving, Son of Saul won the Best Foreign Film Oscar and should not be missed.

CALAMITY JANE SING ALONG U Fri 29 Apr and Sun 1 May Dir: David Butler Cast: Doris Day, Howard Keel USA 1953, 1hr 39mins It’s the big bonanza musical extravaganza as the re-release of this witty western hits our screens in a sing-along version! Follow Calamity Jane as she heads to Chicago to find a popular actress and bring her back to Deadwood, Dakota; but on the way finds herself questioning her own determination to remain so ‘unladylike’. Whip crack-away into this fun-filled film for all the family.

Mon 11 Apr, 6.10pm Dir: Andrew Lau Cast: Andy Lau, Tony Leung HK 2002, 1hr 41mins, subs

Tue 19 Apr, 8.20pm Dir: Johnnie To Cast: Simon Yam, Leung Ka-fai HK 2005, 1hr 40mins, subs

Bringing together two of Asia’s biggest stars, Andy Lau and Tony Leung, Infernal Affairs became a world-wide hit upon its release and remains one of Hong Kong’s most famous and influential crime films. At its core it is a classic, edge of the seat, cop and gangster cat and mouse story. Infernal Affairs was later remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed.

Johnnie To is one of Hong Kong’s most important contemporary filmmakers and this one of his greatest works. Election focuses on the selection of a new triad leader, exploring issues from generational conflict to tradition and loyalty. At the same time it’s a pointed reflection on the politics of post1997 Hong Kong.

CRIME: Hong Kong Style is produced by HOME, Manchester, with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery. This season is also supported by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London.
