Anchored by a superb performance by Trine Dyrholm as Anna, The Commune is by turns funny and bracingly honest.

Looks like it’s up to John and fellow construction worker Frank to whoop E.T.’s ass!

We continue our extended Stanley Kubrick season with a reissue of his tenth film, courtesy of the BFI. Ryan O’Neal stars as Redmond Barry (later Barry Lyndon) and Marisa Berenson is Lady Lyndon in an adaption of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel about the exploits of an 18th century Irish adventurer. One of Kubrick’s finest and most influential films it has been named as one of the greatest films ever made in numerous polls, including Sight & Sound and Time.

Perhaps best compared to the Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder fish-out-of-water comedies of the 1980s (like Stir Crazy), Keanu is raucous, at times cartoonishly violent and very funny.

Restored and re-released by the Independent Cinema Office and StudioCanal to mark 40 years of punk, Alex Cox’s seminal 1986 biopic stars Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb as the ill-fated king and queen of alternative rock. It’s 1978 and Sid Vicious is arrested at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan following Nancy Sugden’s sudden, tragic death. Dragged in for questioning, Sid flashes back to how they first met.

For our monthly 35mm screening, we present an absolute masterpiece of 1920s cinema − Murnau’s silent film Sunrise. A lyrical tale of love, betrayal and redemption, a man from a small fishing village plans to murder his wife after he is seduced by a woman from the city. Reissued by the BFI in 2004, this print incorporates the restoration of the original soundtrack, a Movietone recorded orchestral score compiled by composer Hugo Riesenfeld.
He’s back! David Brent returns in Ricky Gervais’ mockumentary, and this time he’s no longer confined to his office. Still harbouring (deluded) dreams of being a rock star, David is now a singer songwriter in his own band ‘Foregone Conclusion’. Can he finally achieve the fame he craves? A must-watch for fans of The Office and lovers of Brent’s toecurlingly awkward and inappropriate sense of humour.

A hard-hitting and sobering look at prejudice and hate that cuts to the bone.

Adapting Miss Highsmith is presented by Filmhouse in partnership with Waterstones, and supported by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Incorporating strands of earlier book ‘Ripley Under Ground’, The American Friend sees the protagonist (a brooding Hopper) involve terminally ill picture framer Jonathan Zimmerman (Bruno Ganz) in an underworld murder plot.

Highsmith’s seventh novel ‘This Sweet Sickness’ was first adapted for TV as part of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in 1962. It features a boyish Gérard Depardieu – still fresh from acting opposite Robert De Niro in Bertolucci’s 1900 – as David, an accountant hopelessly obsessed with a woman he has carried a torch for since his youth but who’s now married to another man.
