british embassy changes rules Prior appointments needed T he British embassy in Bangkok has now changed the system for obtaining notarial (documentary) services from the main site in Wireless Road. British nationals must now make an appointment online and can no longer turn up on a first-come, firstserved queuing basis. The revision was introduced on March 23. The services affected by this change are swearing an oath about freedom to marry, any affidavit, needing a witness signature, making a certified copy and uniting documents. However, some other notarial services can be handled by post, notably the famous letter confirming your income or salary for Thai immigration purposes. This move brings the notarial services section of the embassy into line with other departments which already require a prior appointment, including applying for a British passport which is handled by the sub-office at Trendy Office. Effectively, this means that everyone requiring a service at the

British embassy or its suboffice must have a confirmed written appointment time before they make the journey. The embassy says that the change in procedure is part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Officeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consular strategy which claims to want to provide a more professional, modern and streamlined service for British nationals who require access to notarial and documentary services. The strategy was launched in April 2013 and covers the period to mid 2016.

Full information about notarial services can be found at the British embassy website www.gov.uk/notarialand-documentary-servicesguide-for-thailand. The site gives a detailed account of which services require a physical presence and which can be handled by post. For example, the legalization of a seal or signature can be handled without visiting the embassy. It should be noted that most embassy services of any kind are now centred on Bangkok. The Pattaya office

of the local honorary consul was closed in 2011 and the Chiang Mai office, although still open, offers fewer services than in the past. It is widely believed that financial cuts, imposed from London, have been responsible for the curtailment of services in the provinces. Government statements now lay heavy emphasis on Brits abroad using the social media, wherever possible, rather than overly relying on human interaction. Continued on page 6

24-hour UK visa available

The British government has launched worldwide a new 24hour super priority visa service for those in a hurry or prepared to dig further into their pockets. More than 67,500 Thai nationals were granted a visa in 2014, an increase of 13 percent on only two years ago, underpinning the continued popularity of the UK as a destination for tourism, business and study. The new 24-hour service, which is optional, costs an additional 31,200 baht, which is forfeit if the visa is refused. A further option is a 3- to 5-day visa service for an additional 5,200 baht. Thais can also use the standard service, with no supplement, which is 15 days. The new rules apply to all visit and non-settlement visas. Settlement visas do not have a fast track and take up to three months to process. There is also to be a simplification of visa categories from 15 different routes to just four, making it easier for visa customers to understand which visa is best for them. This will also provide greater flexibility as the new standard visa will allow those travelling on business to use the same visa to

UK as the tourist. This particular change comes into effect on April 24. Separately, business visitors will not need to produce as many documents as before if they are travelling on business for a company endorsed by UK Trade and Investment.

The Public Health Department has set a budget to establish a public health program to show local people and youth how to avoid HIV infection. Condoms will be distributed and booklets produced with animated drawings. The Department also sponsored vaccination programs.

Immigration focuses on ASEAN security Deputy Commissioner General of the Immigration Bureau, police general Wut Liptapanlop, was the main speaker at a conference held at the Jomtien immigration office. He talked in general about the need for enhanced security arrangements following the advent of the 10-nation ASEAN Economic Community next year. In particular, the general drew attention to the fact that over 10,000 ships passed the immigration checkpoints at Laem Chabang and Sichang with over 200,000 aliens coming ashore. The new computer system to process foreigners entering the kingdom by sea was demonstrated at the seminar.

Yet another Russian gang exposed Two Russians were arrested with 79 fake credit cards, a laptop and a skimming machine in their possession. The arrest of Temur Rustamov and Evgeny Titov was the result of K Bank notifying police of the use of fake credit cards used for shopping in various Pattaya malls. Both men admitted they had brought the equipment to Thailand with nefarious intent. The amount of theft committed by them is estimated at more than one million baht.

News Construction Transnational gang arrested camp searched Police have arrested a joint RussianThai criminal gang who were caught with a large quantity of marijuana and 21 plant pots. The offence came to light when Thai postal authorities intercepted parcels bound for Russia which were found to contain illegal substances. Police were then able to track down the Pattaya residence from where the unlawful activities were based. It is believed the three Russians entered Thailand as college students, but it is clear their study aims were not orthodox. The three Russians charged were Georgy Nyushkov, Aleksei Druzhinin and Aleksei Samokhin, all in their late 20s.

Police and soldiers joined forces to search a construction labourersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; camp in Soi Wat Boonkanjana, Jomtien, which has been the cause of many complaints of violence in recent weeks. The camp holds 800 foreigners, mostly Cambodians and Burmese, who frequently start fighting with Thai workers for reasons which are far from clear. Police said that the reason for trouble was overcrowding as there were many fewer rooms than workers which led to tensions. Also 100 of the workers were found to be on-site without the required paperwork.

A Turkish national was robbed in a hotel room by a gender bender with a mission to steal. He said he had lost the equivalent of 70,000 baht after meeting the transvestite on Walking Street and adjourning to a nearby room. The last he could remember was lying on the bed eating an ice cream which his companion bought for him and carefully unwrapped. When he awoke he discovered he had been well and truly taken for a ride. The thief has been identified on the in-house CCTV and is said to be rather overweight with a round face.

Death seen in dream

A man identified as Ponpipat Pratumdang was produced at a police press conference after being found in possession of 1,800 yaba tablets, 152 fake police ID cards, 47 fake rubber stamps of the police bureau and various other illegal items including an unlicensed gun. Officers raided his accommodation after complaints that he was impersonating policemen in order to conduct his drug business. He told investigators that he was trying only to raise 1.7 million baht to buy back a piece of land, adding that he bought the drugs from a contact in Chiang Rai.

Following the issuing of an Interpol warrant, an alleged Russian criminal was sent back to his home country after police claimed he had committed many serious frauds and extortions in Siberia. Sergey Kovalenko had tried to legitimize his stay in Pattaya by obtaining a student visa which was at the point of expiring. In any case, he showed little interest in academic matters. Police said this man was a member of a gang which went around threatening people with violence if they did not come up with larger sums of cash.

German tourist acts crazily A German national caused a great deal of trouble after he began acting violently for no apparent reason. Dennis Tagga, 25, visited a restaurant on Second Road but threw the table at the waitress when she asked what was his menu choice. The restaurant owner then tried to calm the man down but was punched for his concern. It later transpired that Tagga had been staying at a nearby hotel where he had broken a lot of furniture before jumping out of a third storey window. Luckily he had fallen onto a pile of sand. A group of motorbike taxi boys at last apprehended the guy and rushed him to the police station for a cooling-off period.

Shopkeeper murdered at home A Thai man was found dead in a Nongprue pond and is believed to have fainted whilst walking along the bank. The wife of Mai Khotasin told investigators she had had a weird dream the night before in which her husband appeared without a head which had made him difficult to identify. Neighbors said that Mai enjoyed fishing and may well have had an accident whilst preparing for his sport. However, no reel or line was found nearby. The body was taken to Banglamung hospital mortuary for formal processing and collection by distraught relatives.

A woman was found dead on her bed with a mosquito net tied tightly around her neck. Apitchaya Noppamas, 60, lived alone and ran a small grocery business. Neighbors became suspicious after the store had remained closed without good reason for three days. A foul smell eventually alerted them to call the police. The murdered woman had a son living in Bangkok. Police believe that a man, posing as a customer, had entered the shop and asked to use the washing machine. Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothes were found in the tub. It is thought he then murdered Apitchaya and escaped by stealing her car. Police are examining closed circuit TV tapes, but it is not known if they contain anything of significance.

News School hosts international day

Tara Pattana International School, led by head teacher Peter Hartnell, presided over this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s international day with the theme Songs and Dances Around the World. The event, attended by teachers and parents, was held to show the talents of students before the end of the academic year.

Sports day at blind school

The Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind hosted its annual sports day to promote the healthy lifestyle for the youngsters aged between 3 and 20. The school director Aurora Sribuapan said the school tried to offer a full service for the youngsters including picking them up and dropping them home during term time.

Isan Association hosts festival

The Isan Association of Pattaya hosted its annual celebration at Pattaya City School 8 to promote northern arts and culture. There were cooking competitions and the winner received the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Trophy.

Vocational academic day held

The Thai-itoh Technology Vocational College held an open day to allow students to show examples of their fine work. College director Dr Piyadee Prasertsom said the purpose behind the event was to illustrate the excellence of the institution and the importance of new technology today.

New marketing A government figure has suggested that Thailand could be transformed as a tourist hub if the whole country was made a duty free zone. But just think of the queues at the airport as tourists waited in line with their receipts to cash in their vouchers. Actually, it’s not clear that Thailand needs that sort of stimulus. Airport arrivals were apparently up 20 percent in the last three months, in spite of the large drop in Russian arrivals. Chinese ups & downs A member of the Koh Larn council has announced that thousands of Chinese tourists are now visiting the island during their longer stay in Pattaya. That’s the positive side. The negative side is that they don’t appear to be spending much money there and don’t always use the toilet. Sounds like it’s time for that book of etiquette for Chinese tourists in Thailand that was widely predicted last year but hasn’t appeared yet.

The embassy does maintain a network of honorary consuls and consular correspondents throughout Thailand. But they do not normally advertise their services publicly and British citizens are urged to go through the Bangkok headquarters when making inquiries. The government says this is to ensure

that there is fair standardization and adequate monitoring. Separately, reports show that the time required for obtaining a British passport in Thailand is now only about one month. Last summer there was a serious international backlog and a delay of three months was common before the passport actually arrived. Thailand-based British applicants for passports now

Russian tourist saves man’s life

Huge music festival More than 40 Thai bands and musicians entertained the public at two beachside stages for the recent Pattaya Music Festival. At least half a million tourists attended the event. Needless to say the traffic was chaotic. Beach Road and all side streets were closed from 4 pm to 2 am. In the past there have been more stages, but City Hall said that the likely traffic congestion and the chaos associated with the Sukhumvit tunnel project had caused a rethink this year. Holes in North Pattaya It’s to be hoped that the civic authorities will soon get round to filling the awful holes which have appeared on the beach path near the Amari Hotel. The broken concrete and huge gaps are said to be the result of soil erosion and they certainly make walking hazardous. The damage will get a lot worse if the upcoming rainy season starts early this year. Pattaya can never reach grade “A” status whilst this sort of thing persists in the main tourist beach area. Parking crisis The local police force is efficient in the imposition of fines for traffic offences such as not having the right sort of driving licence or forgetting your crash helmet. What’s less successful is the attempt to prevent illegal parking by four- and eight-wheel vehicles, especially on Beach Road (North), Thepprasit Road and Third Road. There’s no point in calling for better roads if the ones we have are cluttered with illegally-parked vehicles. Smile please We hear that one of the latest moves at immigration is to insist you have your photo taken with an immigration policeman when applying to extend some sorts of visas. This is said to be a security measure as some passport size photos of the applicant in the past did not bear much resemblance to the person depicted. Thailand is a wonderful place for coming up with new ideas that mere farang would never think of in a month of Sundays. New Athena Restaurant Richard Burk, formerly of the Amor and Coco’s, is in charge of a new restaurant now in operation on Jomtien Soi 12. The Athena offers a huge menu with set meals starting for as low as 295 baht. On the dessert menu is Richard’s famous carrot cake which is said to be especially good. You can read more about Athena at www.facebook.com/Athenajomtien. Opening hours are 11 am to 9 pm with set dinners from 5 pm. Government insurance Thais and working expats who are covered can now use their government insurance cover at Pattaya Hospital on Soi Buakhao. But even if you are not covered by the scheme, it’s still a good idea to be registered there. Prices are cheap by comparison with the private sector and much of the equipment there is up-to-date and new. It’s a good idea to register in advance of any emergency and you need to take along your passport. The registration form requests details of a friend or relative and asks you to give your blood group. New Indian There are said to be 60-plus Indian restaurants in the greater Pattaya area, but this one is different. Indian Roots is located by Mabprachan Lake, via Soi Siam Country Club, and well worth trying. There’s a large car park and the environment is family-friendly. Lots of dishes to try, with a total range of tastes from spicy to mild, and vegetarians won’t be disappointed with the selection of interest to them. Personally, we thought the hit of the evening were the prawn curries with garlic nan.

High heel weapon confiscated

A Polish tourist KatarzynaPietrzycka and her partner were astonished when a transvestite approached and offered sex. When Kapazyta complained at this very rude interruption, the cross-dresser became angry and hit her with a high heel shoe. The prostitute, Plakad Somjan, 28, then tried to escape but was soon arrested as one shoe was missing. Plakad said in mitigation that it was not clear the Polish couple were together.

Pickup driver injures tourists Police set up a road block in Banglamung in an attempt to apprehend drug users and ordered the driver of a Mitsubishi pickup to stop for a urine test. However, he swerved round the police barrier and even managed to avoid capture at a second checkpoint. He then hit two tourists in front of the Ambassador Hotel, Sukhumvit Road, before crashing into a car and his free time was brought to an end. However, two other passengers managed to escape into a wood. Adithep Thongleum, 36, said he was on his way to get the pickup from a friend when the saga of the evening began. He was escorted to the police station and instructed to take a urine test.

Police search for thief Man drowns in pool

Torbien Fries, 48, Danish national, complained to police that he was robbed of 15,000 baht whilst riding on a baht bus. He said he was sat between two people, one an overweight lady and the other he could not remember. At about the same time, a German tourist Bruno Rummel, 49, reported that a fat person had stolen his Samsung Galaxy phone. It is thought that the chubby woman was responsible for both crimes, but so far she has eluded detection. Most thefts of this kind occur when the victim rises from his seat to get off the bus, thus revealing his trouser pockets at this vulnerable moment. Both victims were invited to look through mug shots of apprehended criminals at the main city police station.

Police raced to a pond in Soi Toongklom-Talman after reports that a drunk man had fallen in and not resurfaced. The dead man was identified as Pramot, aged 31. A friend, Pornsawan, told investigators that Pramot was the owner of a furniture shop and that the pair often enjoyed drinking together. On the day in question, Pramot said he was hot and went for a swim. After he had not reappeared for 10 minutes, Pornsawan contacted the authorities.

UK introduces health surcharge From April 6, all nationals from outside of Europe, including Thai nationals, going to live in the UK for longer than six months will be required to pay a health surcharge in order to gain access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Currently non-European nationals going to work, study or join family members receive free medical treatment under the UK’s NHS in the same way as a permanent resident. These changes will ensure that those going to live in the UK make an appropriate financial contribution to the cost of their healthcare. The health surcharge will be 200 British pounds per year and 150 British pounds per year for students and will be payable at the same time that individuals submit their visa applications online. The Royal Thai Government has launched a new 1111 hotline to receive complaints from foreigners in Thailand, in addition to the existing 1155 Tourist Police Call Centre. In case of emergency, foreigners are advised to dial 1155. The 24-hour Tourist Police Call Centre is ready to offer assistance to both tourists and foreign residents in Thailand. There will be interpreters on standby to receive all emergency calls. If the pressing cases are beyond the centre’s jurisdiction, they will be referred to the respective government agencies. For non-emergency matters, foreigners are advised to call 1111. The centre, also available 24-hour daily, is staffed by representatives from all 20 ministries to ensure prompt response for all complaints received from foreigners in Thailand. Complaints received will be coordinated through the centre to related government agencies, state enterprises, and nongovernmental organisations. The government plans to expand the 1111 centre’s coverage to Thai embassies in the ASEAN countries. The move is part of the government’s tireless effort to review all safety measures and standards, as well as to offer prompt assistance to foreigners who may need help while in Thailand.

Your Visa

Snap Judgment Traffic gripes Complaints are growing about the continual stopping of foreigners on motorbikes and in cars by the Pattaya traffic police and their volunteers. Nobody objects to enforcement of traffic regulations, but the line is not always clear between law and order and harassment. The biggest issue is the requirement of foreign drivers to hold a Thai or international licence to drive on the country’s roads; a national licence is not acceptable. This is all well and good but many Pattaya rental companies do not require to see such documentation before releasing a two- or four-wheel vehicle. Needless to say, police fine the foreigner but never the rental company. A separate problem is the ambiguity of some road signs. The most obvious example is the instruction to “turn left waiting light” which many people had assumed was freedom to turn left at any time, subject to safety, but has turned out to mean precisely the opposite. There are also some major junctions in the city where there is no such sign. Does this mean that it is still OK to turn left at any time or not? A Pattaya Today reader was recently fined for turning left at the junction of Pattaya Klang and Third Road even though there is no road sign. Another reader claims he was fined for turning at a junction when the waiting officer said the green light had already turned amber, a fact the reader disputes. He was told he could make a complaint at the police station to the duty officer, but was there informed in no uncertain terms that his only recourse was to “see a lawyer”. There are indeed suspicions that the main purpose of the recent enforcement of traffic rules is to raise larger sums of cash rather than to make the city safer for the walking and driving public. A very different approach is taken by the authorities when dealing with, or ignoring, the persistent problem of buses needing somewhere to park. Pattaya thoroughfares now have much less useable space than before thanks to the parking of huge vehicles by the roadside, often on areas with painted double yellow lines. Although the problems besetting traffic flow in Pattaya are many and varied, a major issue is the existence of the huge tour buses which are particularly a hazard on Third Road and Thappraya Road. When they attempt to turn right on narrow streets, they disrupt traffic and cause long delays. Have the city authorities thought of limiting the size of tour buses allowed to use the local roads? Often, these buses when in use are only one third occupied. All those empty seats.

Annual splash We are approaching the yearly water festival of Songkran to which the only answer appears to leave the city altogether for at least a week. What began as a gentle washing ceremony has turned into a free-for-all and compulsory dousing, loved by some and hated by others. Over the years, there have been many attempts to restrict the bawdiness. One suggestion was to limit the water wars to just one area of the city, for example Pattaya Park, but nothing ever came of the idea from a city council member. Another “rule”, never enforced, was that the dousing of all and sundry should be restricted to the afternoons and finish promptly at dusk. Yet another proposed solution was that everyone would agree not to throw buckets of water on passing motorbike riders because of the danger to health and safety as well as life and limb. Quite impractical of course. Other ideas for Songkran have included the proposal that the jubilation should be restricted to just one day rather than a week plus. But nothing will actually work. Love it or hate it, the annual water festival is here to stay in its wildest form. Not even the threat of a nationwide drought will have the slightest effect. Just lie back and enjoy it. Or take a well-deserved break in a third country without this particular tradition.

Thai labour laws are very strict and working is defined as performing such an activity whether remunerated or not. If a problem were to occur, it would likely be because a local Thai took an exception to your activity, perhaps because of jealousy in a rival business. Our advice has to be to keep a low profile if you don’t have a work permit. Extending under arrest Q: My friend was recently arrested for a sex attack although he claims he is not guilty. He obtained

bail at the local court, but his passport was lodged there. His 60-day tourist visa expires soon and he needs to visit immigration to make an extension as the court case is still some weeks away. How can he do that without his passport? A: Your friend needs to take his paperwork – the arrest and the bail receipt – to the court as there is a provision for the authorities to loan him his passport to visit immigration. The process is a bit complicated, so he may need to take with him a Thai speaker who can overcome the obvious hurdles. But the essential thing when dealing with Thai bureaucracy is the right paperwork. Too sick to attend Q: My brother is in the intensive care unit and his visa is about to run out. The hospital bursar says he should get a friend to obtain a medical extension. However, she was not sure how to do this. Have you the right information for me to undertake this task?

Pattaya’s gastronomes gathered at The Royal Cliff recently to enjoy another evening of culinary/ oenophonic pampering from the deVine Wine Club. The club was launched in April 2001 as the visible face of the resort’s enthusiasm and passion for promoting wines and hosting vinicultural soirees. Graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, it proved yet again, how this prestigious wine club manages to push not only the epicurean envelope but to present an interesting array of bottles from global wine-growing areas. The showcased wines for this event were from the Gérard Bertrand estates. Their seven award-winning properties are situated in the finest wine-growing regions of LanguedocRoussillon in the south of France. Gérard Bertrand was born and raised in the region making wine with father, Georges, since the age of 10. A former rugby union player who represented France, RC Narbonne and the Stade Français; he retired from his rugby career to take over the family estate after the accidental death of his father and is now a renown winemaker. His five estates offer the full range of diversity of wines from red, white, rose, varietal, appellation, estate, still, sparkling and dessert.

On arrival in the reception area we were handed a glass of 6ème Sens Blanc 2012 to accompany the gourmet canapés and to set the scene for the 6-course pageant of tastes to come. The wine proved very enjoyable and easy-drinking due to its aromatic freshness and is being discovered as a versatile aperitif. Executive Chef Walter Thenisch had created a gastronomic pairing menu to complement the wines and was on hand to greet and meet the wine buffs and discerning bon vivants on this exclusive culinary event. The iconic Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar hosts these events and from its imposing décor to the teak arched windows, the cool wine cellar, and the sophisticated ambiance, enhanced with the melodious sounds of the piano player, it just oozed with luxury, extravagance and pleasure. Following Antonello Passa, general manager of The Royal Cliff Hotels Group’s welcome speech and a smoothly given history of Gérard Bertrand’s Languedoc-Roussillon vini-empire by Ron Batori, president of Bangkok Beer and Beverages Co., Ltd., the evening was about to commence. first course of Norwegian salmon mi-cuit with pickled beetroots and a special white balsamic vinaigrette proved an inspired choice. A rough translation of the French phrase “micuit” is half-cooked, but that fails to express the decadent texture of this salmon. A combination of heat and salt work in concert to ensure that, although served chilled, the salmon is anything but raw. Accompanied by round cuts of pickled beets, topped with a micro salad and strewn with petals it was an opening masterpiece. Course number two was a showcase of luxury overload, Maine lobster poached in fennel with a potato and fennel mousse, persimmon and beurre blanc with a pairing of Gris Blanc Rose 2013. This unique wine is an award-winning vintage showcasing the new colours of rose. A truly original rose draped in its extremely pale pink colour but with aromas of small red fruit, crisp with freshness. Presentation of this course was impeccable, the attention to detail superb. A coral fresh claw rested on a bed of potato and fennel mousse juxtaposed by a knuckle of the precious flesh garnished with a sliver of poached pear with persimmon and beurre blanc sauce. Toques off to the kitchen for this triumphant combination. There is usually a luscious beef course for the main event at these

deVine wine dinners and this one was no exception. The main event was a herb-cepes mushroom crusted Black Angus beef tenderloin with red wine braised onions, homemade potato crisps and accompanied by a bordelaise sauce. The distinguished wine chosen to balance these robust flavours was a Reserve Speciale Syrah Rouge 2011. With it generous array of deep fruit flavours it was the perfect escort. Handcrafted chèvre cheeses with wild greens and pistachio signaled we were approaching the closing stages of this pageant of splendidly crafted dishes. The goat’s cheeses did not disappoint; a trio of artisanal beauties was served at the perfect temperature to reveal their individual characters, sharp, creamy and heady, they were a divine trio. Paired with a 6ème Sens Rouge 2011 with its fruity aromas and silky tannins it was a good choice for enjoying the joys of goat’s cheese.

After all this gleeful eating the dessert had more surprises to offer. The final pouring of the evening was a sparkling Cremant de Limoux Blanc 2010. The dessert was a heavenly plate of macaroons filled with raspberry mousse, hot chocolate soufflé and homemade bourbon vanilla ice cream – and yes it really was as sumptuous as it all sounds and made for the sweetest and most charming conclusion. We passed on coffee and homemade chocolate pralines. The Royal Grill Room is a place that does everything slightly beyond the call of duty. Glitz and glamour flourish beautifully at Tulip Group’s hospitality venture. Managed by Centara it’s luxury all the way from the dramatic marinethemed lobby with its chic Italian furnishings, state-ofthe-art glass lifts to the Oceana restaurant where sharks swim nonchalantly through the huge aquariums oblivious to the stares and gasps of onlookers. No expense has been spared to make this southern Pattaya 5-star destination elegantly modish and on-trend. The signature restaurant here is Ruffino which is set on the rooftop with superb views of the bay and beyond. The marine theme continues with more aquariums, this time with dancing moon jellyfish tumbling and turning in their watery habitats. We have reviewed Ruffino before and a stunning meal it was but on this occasion

we were visiting to experience the Friday night international seafood BBQ held on the third Friday of each month. This gourmet event is set on the rooftop lounge and bar overlooking the pool and ocean. Priced at only B1,299 including free-flow wine (B.900 with soft drinks) it is a must-visit venue. Elegantly dressed staff are on hand to flick away the used plates, bring new ones, replenish cutlery and generally to be friendly and pleasant. As you would expect from a 5-star kitchen, the choices are plentiful and of premier quality. Seafood is always a popular station and at Centara Grand Phratamnak the serving dishes toppled with top-notch crustaceans: weighty crabs filled with luscious white meat, fat bright-eyed prawns, rock lobster and imported green-lipped mussel. It was here that Mick

and I set off filling our plates firstly with sweet, briny French oysters which we crowned with red vinegar and minced shallots which really made them sing. Japanese sushi and sashimi is always another popular station which receives the undivided attention of most of the diners. Together with freshly made California rolls, premium tuna, salmon, octopus, crab sticks and squid plus a huge platter of in-house grave lax all tastes were superb, sweet, salty and utterly delicious. The next station displayed spicy seafood salads, a myriad of leafy salad creations including a particularly good, Greek salad, a Thai pork herb yam, and much, much more with an extensive choice of dressings and chili pastes. Moving on to more substantial fare, chafing dishes offered

up their treasure of vegetable fried rice, pan-fried tilapia fillets, glistening pork spare ribs, a hearty western beef stew together with beef with Thai herbs, baked potatoes topped with sour cream, two types of hot fragrant soup – the variety was endless. It was then forward to the BBQ area where lamb, chicken, beef, veal, prawns, fish and squid were on offer to cook to our preference. Alongside this the pasta chef was waiting to create bespoke spaghetti or penne preparation together with the many Italian sauces on offer. Sea bass was another choice plus steaks and a delicious ratatouille and roasted potatoes. Continue circling the room and you’ll come across the Mongolian hotpot table where chicken, beef and seafood can be simmered in the special broth together with a whole garden of seasonal vegetables. Hold on to your waistbands here comes the dessert counter where chocolate bomb cakes and fancies sit innocently next to all manner of cheesecakes, mousses, chocolate tartlets, profiteroles, custards, fruit pies and ice creams. This is one extravagant buffet/BBQ set against a breathtaking panoramic view of the bay. Bangkok’s reputation as the region’s home to the best in international dining received a boost recently when progressive Indian restaurant, Gaggan, took first place in the latest list of “Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.”

The restaurant, opened by Indianborn chef Gaggan Anand, was named Asia’s best at a ceremony in Singapore. Gaggan was singled out by judges for its “playful” food and classic Indian dishes which Chef Gaggan

“reinterprets with modernity and flair to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western cuisine.” Gaggan’s win marks the second consecutive year that a Bangkok restaurant has taken this coveted top

spot in the awards. In 2014, David Thompson’s Thai Restaurant Nahm at Bangkok’s Metropolitan Hotel was voted number one. Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand said, “This is great news for Bangkok, and Thailand as a whole, and testament to the hard work of Chef Anand and his team who well deserve this accolade. The award, which was last year taken by Bangkok’s Nahm restaurant, shows how Bangkok is not only the best place to enjoy Thai dishes, but also offers the finest in international dining too. We can now expect more food lovers to flock to the city to enjoy our range of culinary delights.”

This year, Nahm took seventh place and was joined by other Thai successes including Chef Tim Butler’s Eat Me (25th place), Bo.Lan (37th place) and Ian Kttichai’s Issaya Siamese Club (39th place). Pattaya turns green, for one day only by Derek Franklin

The fifth St. Patrick’s Day Parade took to the streets of Pattaya on the afternoon of the 17th of March, and this annual event just keeps on getting bigger and bigger each year. While St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, this day is celebrated throughout the world. From New York to New Zealand, Beijing to Dubai and from Moscow to Sydney, as well as in towns and villages throughout Ireland people celebrated this day. Five marching bands, and too many decorated floats, cars, pick-up trucks and motorbikes to count joined thousands of local Thais, resident foreigners and holidaymakers to prove that you don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Green was the colour of the day, and while many wore a simple green T-shirt, it was obvious that others took a long time preparing their outfit for the day.

Rattanachai Suttidechanai, from the Tourism and Sports Department at City Hall, welcomed the thousands of people who turned up at the start of the parade. This was followed by Derrick Kane, the man who came up with the idea of Pattaya hosting this yearly parade, who said he was overwhelmed by the large number of people who made the effort. Father Michael Picharn Jaiseri C.Ss.R., vice president of the Father Ray Foundation, reminded the lively crowd that on this day, March 17, everyone was Irish, and for the sellers of green fabrics it must be their busiest time of year. While the parade is a huge amount of fun there is a serious side to the event, to raise funds for the Father Ray Foundation which currently cares for and educates 850 underprivileged children and student with disabilities. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly! No, this is not a review of Clint Eastwood’s classic spaghetti western titled The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but it is hopefully an action-packed look at Thailand’s economy and Pattaya’s real estate market. There are many twists and turns in Thai politics, the Thai economy and especially our local Eastern Seaboard construction industry; it’s as dramatic as any good ‘B’ movie you’ve ever seen. Let’s get started with the Good; that certainly is what seems to be coming from Thailand’s current leader, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. In a recent survey, the Department of Mental Health found that Thai people were much happier during the second half of 2014, after the military takeover and under the new government. Before the political turmoil, the happiness level among Thais was rated as moderate. Once the turbulence escalated the happiness level plunged-dropping continuously in 2014. By the second half of the year, when Prayut came into power, the level of happiness gradually began rising. In another study conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, it was discovered that most Thais think that Thai politics are a lot better since the coup. The majority of those surveyed felt that political conflicts within the country had noticeably subsided under the leadership of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. Compared to the period before the coup, Thailand’s political situation is now more peaceful in their opinion. A day later, The Nation reported that martial law was the

reason behind a spike in tourist arrivals in the second half of last year. That is not only good, it’s great news, and it shows that just maybe military men can show politicians a little about protocol and how to run a country. That’s not all of the good news. Bloomberg News very recently revealed that Thailand ranked at the top among 51 of the world's happiest economies—just ahead of Switzerland, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Leading asset managers are predicting that the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index still has a chance to hit 1700 and even 1800 basis points this year and more than 2,000 investment projects worth 1.4 trillion baht applied for promotional privileges from the Board of Investment last December. For the year as a whole, 3,469 investment projects with a value of 2.1 trillion baht applied for such privileges—the highest in the last 50 years in terms of investment value. The number of projects seeking promotional privileges grew 73 percent yearon-year while the value grew 117 percent. And what about tourism? Despite the fact that Russian arrivals plummeted 45.7 percent to just 145,605 visitors in January following year-on-year declines of 27, 23 and 21 percent, there is no problem, according to the Department of Tourism DirectorGeneral Second Lieutenant Anuphab Kesornsuwan. “The number of tourists visiting Thailand in January was 2.65 million, a solid increase of 16.30 percent from the same period last year. The rise continued in February at 29.60 percent, while

in the first 13 days of this month the number of foreign visitors has already showed an increase of 27.6 percent year-on-year”. He said Thailand has become the number one destination for Chinese travelers in the first two months of this year, predicting that the number would likely continue to grow as more and more individual Chinese start their way to Thailand even though the figure of those coming with tour operators is on a decline. Six million Chinese tourists are expected here in 2015--an impressive 25 percent increase from 2014; they are seen generating revenues of about 200 billion baht. Although the Russian tourism market has fallen drastically, the Chinese tourism sector is expected to play a huge part in Thailand's tourism industry revival as the overall number of foreign tourists this year could reach 28.36 million, generating about 1.29 trillion baht, again breaking all records. Yes, the Thai industrial and tourism sectors are booming. Now for the Bad. Things are not looking so good for the world’s real estate industry as there are signs everywhere of oversupply and slow downs. Industry pundits such as Jacob Maslow, editor and publisher of the Rapid News Network, are asking, “Will a potential Chinese housing crash trigger a global financial shock?” Maslow is speaking of China’s overheated and highly oversupplied real estate market with millions of homes just sitting unsold. He recently wrote, “The interesting thing about China’s real estate market is that, unlike the US market which uses real time

Chinese consumers have kept their cool so well that real estate prices have started to drift down”. If that doesn’t say enough about China’s real estate industry, consider that SOHO China Limited--the largest prime office real-estate developer in China—suffered a 45 percent decline in profits last year. And even though we have heard all the hype about American real estate hot spots and a 16 percent jump in Chinese buyers, America’s real estate market still appears to have a long way before any substantial and real recovery. There has now been over six years of continuous federal government aid trying to boost the American housing market and even though there are some highly publicized ‘hot market areas,’ a large portion of the overall US real estate market is still stuck and not moving forward. The big question is: With all these years of financial stimulus, is the American financial system heading into another 2008-type mortgage-related crash? Regionally,

What is a prenuptial agreement? A prenuptial or antenuptial agreement is a written contract between two people in anticipation of marriage. It normally lists all of the assets each person owns, specifies the rights and obligations of the parties, how finances will be managed during the course of marriage, and specifies what each person's property rights will be if the marriage is terminated either by death, divorce or cancelled by court. Who generally needs a prenuptial agreement? Prenuptial agreement may sound odd because most couples are not open to discuss money matters, property ownership or even possibilities of separation, but these agreements are fairly common and essential, especially if either or both parties have substantial assets, valuables, stocks, inheritances, bonds or collectibles that he or she wants to keep as separate property; or both parties want to clarify financial obligations to a parent or a child from a previous marriage and even extensive debts that they will bring into their marriage. Why is it important? A prenuptial agreement sets the financial arrangements and agreements between couples before their marriage. Future concerns about money, work, children, home, and any other mutual issue can be discussed openly. Both parties can retain personal properties and financial assets they owned prior to marriage which can prevent disputes over property in the future. By setting forth a formal agreement, both parties will be assured that their valuables will be disposed of according to their intentions and both will be aware of what to anticipate in the event of dissolution of marriage. Can a prenuptial agreement protect us and our assets from being liable to extensive debts incurred before our marriage? Under Thai law, this agreement can be used to protect assets of the other spouse from being used or seized to satisfy all separate debts incurred before the marriage. Without it, your future spouse's liability and negative credit history can become your own, and creditors can go after the marital property even though only one spouse is the debtor. How does a prenuptial agreement protect my family business, family members and family heirlooms? Protecting Family Business A prenuptial agreement keeps control and protects ownership of assets, finances and properties belonging to a family business. In the absence of a premarital agreement, a court could award some of your ownership rights in a family business to your partner that can lead to a potentially difficult situation in case the marriage fails. Protecting Family Members Often a prenuptial agreement is used to designate responsibility and to protect the interests of children from a prior marriage as well as children from the upcoming marriage. By signing a formal agreement, you can ensure that your children receive the assets, property or money you want them to have in the event of separation. Protecting Family Heirlooms Heirloom could be anything valuable passed down from generations to its family members. A prenuptial agreement can ensure that family heirlooms are kept out of the marital estate as this is important when there are

children from a prior marriage or other relatives for whom they are intended. What is the significance of a prenuptial agreement in a divorce? This could help as a guideline between the couple on how to divide the properties upon divorce. By entering into a prenuptial agreement, there is less stress and bitterness and less to fight about in a divorce procedure. Divorce may be far less expensive if the spouses’ respective rights are prearranged. What are the important points to consider when preparing a prenuptial agreement? Prenuptial agreements need to be in writing and signed before the marriage with at least two witnesses present and must be registered in the local office where the marriage will take place. This must be written in both Thai and English or the spouse’s native language for better understanding of both parties. It is important to consider that prenuptial agreements cannot be altered except by authorization of the court. It is extremely important that both parties understand exactly all the rights and obligations that go along with the signing of the agreement; that is why each party needs legal counsel from their own respective lawyers. Will a prenuptial agreement drafted in Thailand be valid to cover my assets in other countries? It is recommended that you also obtain legal advice from a legal professional under the other jurisdictions involved because a prenuptial agreement you make in Thailand under Thai law may not always be fully recognized in other countries as there may be a conflict of laws between the different jurisdictions. Can a prenuptial agreement cover child support or child custody? Prenuptial agreements do not deal with child custody or child support issues. The court makes the final decision on custody, and parties cannot set child support since no one can predict all the circumstances which will arise at the time of a dispute. The court shall have the power to decide what is in the child's best interest and will not deny a child the right to financial support or the opportunity to have a relationship with an able parent. What if my spouse and I decide, after years of marriage, that we no longer want to have the prenuptial agreement in effect? Most well-written prenuptial agreements will stipulate a condition that dictates exactly how to withdraw the prenuptial agreement, or a provision for automatic cancellation after an agreed-upon number of years.

In fund managers on-going attempts to cherry pick sectors that will offer consistent, worthwhile returns to investors, particularly over the recent turbulent years, funds have been set up to specifically avoid the machinations of the world’s stock markets, in selected sectors enjoying very strong demand. Although stock markets have rallied, the fact is that although they have surpassed 2007 levels, it’s not by a big margin. Simply put, had your money been linked to the main indices all that time, only recently would you have got your original investment back plus a little extra, with nothing much for inflation. Eight years is a long time to wait for your holdings to claw back and modestly exceed their original paper value. When we remember the ’60s and ’70s image of holiday parks, it is usually with distain, however, gone are the days of grotty chalets and depressing venues. With a huge modernisation programme providing vastly upgraded facilities, this is one of the sectors attracting attention. Apart from the fact that it’s on a growth path, a significant number of UK local authority pension funds have invested in such funds, along with many big UK corporate household names. Consequently, we have looked at the sector in depth. In the volatile financial world we all now find ourselves, it is not often we’ve been able to identify a particular fund that has demonstrated the business acumen required to deliver good investment performance throughout the turbulence. The UK leisure park business is currently a 3 billion GBP per annum business. The purchase/rental of prime sites and significantly upgrading the facilities is one part of the equation. ‘Camp’ sites are being replaced with modern, fixed units and amenities, resulting in both increased capital values and higher revenue streams. The institutional funding has allowed their operation to put in place an impressive development and acquisition schedule over the coming years, which is likely to ensure continuing worthwhile performance. Keep in mind, there is no correlation between this fund’s strong performance and the stock markets. Once again, we see the scenario that has proved successful in recent times; a dominant position in a specific sector that’s enjoying very strong demand, with rising values/income, unconnected to the ups and downs of the markets. As with all property linked funds, there is always the question of liquidity. The holding of real assets, by its very nature, means they cannot be disposed of overnight. Nonetheless, the liquidity level maintained in this fund is above the industry norm, whilst still providing a very worthwhile return. There is a ‘bull’ growth period in the UK leisure holiday park market which is generating substantial profits. However, this will not carry on at this level indefinitely. The industry experts forecast a 10-year window in which the UK’s domestic leisure parks will be brought up to world-class standards. In the meantime, there could well be an opportunity to reap rewards from this increasingly successful business. The only issue for potential investors, as we speak, is that this fund has reached its desired funding level and subscriptions are only being accepted where they replace redemptions through death, or other financial necessity. GIS hits gold at international games Garden International School (GIS) hosted an international sports tournament recently - and came away with dozens of medals. FOBISIA (The Federation of British

International Schools in Asia) held its Under 13 Games at GIS from March 11-15. Teams from around South Asia came to GIS for swimming, athletics, basketball and football competitions.

The event began on March 12 with a welcome dinner at the Purimas Beach Hotel in Ban Chang, near Pattaya. The first day of action saw an early morning start for the athletics, followed by an afternoon

of swimming. On the following days the basketball and football competitions took place, and on the final night there was a gala dinner and disco. The first day of competition was very successful for the students of GIS. In the track and field event, held at the Navy Stadium, Sattahip, both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished as champions. Then in the afternoon swimming competition, which is always a very exciting event, it was close at the finish, with the boys taking first place. The girls missed out by just 3 points, but were very worthy runners-up. After a night’s rest, the boys took part in the basketball and the girls in football. The basketballers hustled well and were

unlucky. The girls’ fitness paid off and they were football champions, only letting in 3 goals and scoring 18. The third day of competition saw all the players start to feel the strain. But still both boys and girls gave 100 percent effort throughout the day. In the basketball event the girls started to hustle and get into their game and came back in the last two games to take a well-earned fourth place. Overall, it was a huge success for all our students and lots of memories to savour for years to come. The event showcased GIS as a centre for sporting excellence and also highlighted the school's community feel, as many students gave up time to

help run events and look after the visiting guests. The students, teachers, parents, staff and maintenance staff all worked hard. Teams came from Kinabalu International School, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, the British School in Nepal, Bromsgrove International School, The Regent's School, Traill International School and St Stephen's International School, all from Bangkok. children, do not know enough about themselves, or their hidden abilities or talents and if they are never discovered or honed, they often grow up thinking that they are no good at anything. This is seldom true, but it is necessary, early on in life, for all of us to find out what we love doing, what gives us the determination and the passion to go on and to get better and better. One of our duties as teachers and human beings is to discover and to nurture our students’ creativity and knowledge. Ever since the beginnings of time the arts have been the vehicle through which men have evolved their ability to communicate, to empathise and to express themselves; all we need to do now is to try to take this on into our adult lives and to expand the possibilities of human experience. Coral Planting by Martina Okafor Students from Garden International School (GIS) have been helping the environment as they took part in a coral planting activity in Pattaya. International Baccalaureate (IB) students in Year 13 went on an eco-friendly trip to Long Beach in Pattaya as part of their Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) project. Some of the Year 12 (IB1) students also decided to join in so they could get an idea about how to successfully organise a trip

for their CAS project next year. At the beach, students planted corals under the supervision and guidance of Thai Marines. After that they listened to some advice and suggestions about how to protect the environment and how to return the coral reefs to their natural habitat. After this, there was time to enjoy the marine life up close as students went snorkelling. The day ended with a beach clean, to make sure the land also looked good. Last week Tara Pattana International School held its annual Performing Arts week. During lessons every day and at lunchtimes, students and staff demonstrated their unique talents and abilities, which ranged from solo and group performances of popular songs, classical recitals, gymnastic displays, to instrumental presentations and dances from all over the world. little effort because we rely on a foundation of already formulated facts to assist us in a quick analysis (for example we don’t have to think very deeply about what the color blue looks like because based on past experience we already know). Deep thinking is not as natural and requires quite a bit more effort because we must dig for information that is not known to us or is less familiar (for example what is 133 divided by the square root of 71 – not impossible to calculate, it just takes more time and

effort than identifying the color blue). The human condition is such that often we rely on intuitive thinking because it’s so much easier to use. Often it is quite reliable. It becomes unreliable when we use it exclusively to solve problems we erroneously assume can be solved by the easier path of thinking that requires less effort. For example, consider the ball and bat quiz. Most everyone looks at that problem and arrives at the answer by the method that requires the least time and effort –

intuitive thinking. If the bat and ball cost $1.10 and the bat is $1.00 more than the ball, then we intuitively reason that the ball must cost $0.10. Not so fast. If you rely solely on intuitive thinking, you’re apt to get the answer wrong. Now employ a little deep thinking. If the bat costs $1.00 more than the ball and the ball costs $0.10, then the bat must cost $1.10. That means the sum total of the two items is $1.20 and that is incorrect because they both cost $1.10. The correct answer is that the bat costs $1.05 and the ball $0.05. Common

mistakes in judgment similar to this have varying levels of consequence; particularly when we use intuitive thinking in our everyday relationships. The danger in the teaching profession is that we may encounter a behavioral or educational problem in the classroom in which we solely rely on intuitive thinking to formulate solutions. Errors in judgment of that sort can lead to dire consequences. I’m half way through my first year of teaching at MIS. One of the things with which I am impressed about my colleagues is their

dedication to avoid intuitive thinking exclusively, but instead to supplement it with deep thinking skills when it comes to resolving educational and behavioral issues with their students. It not only makes for a healthy work environment, more importantly it means our students are getting the fullest attention of their teachers in working through any challenge that arises in the classroom. It has come to be one of the most important parts of the modern school life. No school function is complete without music. The school music program has grown to be complex. Its importance in curriculum is accepted and recommended by the world's leading accrediting councils, among which is the Council of International Schools (CIS). According to Rivera (1985), a well-balanced music program as a regular

part of education should include general music literature, theory and music appreciation. Based on Leonard and House (1990), every person has the need to transform experience with music, that is why every child at Anda Performing Arts School is given the opportunity to develop his aesthetic potential to the highest possible level through expressive experience with music, including vocal and instrumental performance, listening and composition that is appropriate to his developmental level. Aristotle stated that music has the power to mold

character. Music is a sort of art, which must be judged, not according to man's own fancy, but according to good taste. It is acquired through certain rules and refined by exercises and experiences. Music serves as a medium through which individuals maybe acquainted with the various aspects of life, being perspicuous reflection of humanity through the ages (Nye, 1986). It is the unifying element where man finds adequate expression and inner satisfaction for feeling. Many teachers are competent in teaching communication arts, social sciences, and other allied subjects, but they are also expected to provide children's significant experiences in art, which includes music. The school has been given the responsibility for providing good music education for every learner. There is a need therefore, for music teachers to give encouragement to the young students to study and appreciate music to make them aware of its beauty. The

music teacher's mission is to build a sound groundwork of the basics or fundamentals, the enjoyment, appreciation and readiness for experimentation with music for one’s fulfillment, as proposed by Madeline Hunter in her Clinical Theory of Instruction (1991). She further asserted that teachers clearly inform students of what they should be able to do by the end of the instruction and why it is important that they master the lesson's content. Teachers should determine the readiness of the students, reinforcement needed, and the degree of understanding required, the necessary design, and specific steps to be followed. Hunter emphasized the importance of modeling in allowing students to see actual examples of an acceptable finished product by combining both visual and verbal stimuli so that the student will be able to concentrate on the essential features that the teachers wish them to learn. Local Sports Judge and The Colonel cruising at Navy Plutaluang Twenty-seven golfers faced the challenge to their skill, intestinal fortitude and disseminating perseverance. Pre-game comments included Fletch remarking that his game was about as enthralling as the thought of Jerry Lewis playing the lead in a live stage performance of Macbeth. We welcomed David Fletcher, Peter Bailey, Simon Niven from Australia and Gordon Uvanile from Canada. Playing the East and South nines from the white tees, the greens were found to be very slow despite being cut, and provided as much pleasure as sitting through the complete Aussie soap series Home and Away. In the A grade, Eric Black was as busy as a one-armed man on the spotlight at a Pink Floyd concert in compiling 36 points to relegate Mike Gosden to second place on the same score. Third was Gordon Uvanile and Frank Riley rounded out the podium with both players scoring 33 points. Alan Sanders stood atop the B grade with 35 points whilst the fast finishing Patrick Poussier, Jerry Dobbs and Max Bracegirdle all on 33 completed the set.

PSC Tropical Golf from BJ's Phoenix (Stableford) On this day we were set to play Phoenix after what must have been an 18-month gap, and it seems like the PSC committee and the golf chairman had worked hard to bring about this change in attitude. During this time it seems Phoenix had a slight problem with its members and sought to make changes. So we set off with a large group of golfers willing to try out Phoenix after a long absence. A quick book in and down to the start where we found we were to play the Mountain and Lake Nines.

On the scorecard it was difficult to see the mountain and lake and many came to ask me where they were, but we finally got to the start to find ourselves behind 3x3 balls. Ever tried to play behind three balls when each hole is timed on the scorecard? Whilst we were well inside the time allowed the 3 balls soon disappeared in the distance while despite chasing our 4 ball we fell behind. Give the marshalls their due, they were not chasing us and we did finish in about four hours, but I felt under pressure as we set the pace for our group.

So to the round, where I played bad for the first nine as I tried to force the pace, let us face it, some of the golfers can be slow and need a kick. It is unfortunate that of late all players seem to try to be like the golfers they see on TV and stroll around, take many swings and line their putts up from many angles, even the high handicapper. The two nines were in reasonable condition, but we had a strong wind for most of the round. It was nice to play the course after so long; the general consensus of the players was

Keen squash players of all standards from around Pattaya gathered at Fitz Club – Racquets, Health & Fitness early on Saturday morning as Antonello Passa, general manager of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, Kritsana Sorahong, manager of the Fitz Club along with his team welcomed all participants. Heartworm Dogs and even cats are at risk for heartworm. It's difficult to treat and sometimes fatal, but heartworm infection is easily prevented. Your dog should be given a blood test

for heartworm every year, and your veterinarian may prescribe a preventive tablet to be given once a month when mosquito infestation is at its highest. In some areas of Thailand, vets may recommend the medication year-round.

Although dogs are natural hosts for heartworm, cats can also contract this disease, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Talk to your vet if you think your kitty is at risk.

This cheeky fellow fell from a roof just off Beach Road, but luckily his fall was broken by some dirty washing in a basket. A caring passer-by saw him fall and quickly gathered him up. He's doing fine now.

Daisy May

This friendly girl was found wandering one of our local streets. She was far too young to be on her own and would surely have ended up in trouble. Since she has been here she has made some friends and put on a fair amount of weight. She is now ready to go to a new home.

Yin and Yang

These two small brothers were found in a roof space. It seems their mum left them to fend for themselves, but luckily a lovely German lady and her mum scooped them up and smuggled them into their hotel. The next day they brought them from Bangkok to us.

Wilber

This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his three brothers and sisters. Sadly he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home just like his siblings. As you can see he is grown up now and still waiting to be chosen.

Do cats get separation anxiety? You bet they do. Although it's more common in dogs, cats can feel it, too. For most cats, aloofness is just a myth. They are extremely sociable and bond deeply with people and other animals -which means they can feel just as stressed and uneasy as dogs do when left alone. Common signs include hiding; "going" where they shouldn't; meowing or grooming constantly, and being destructive, clingy, or sullen. If your cat shows any of these signs, call or visit your vet. First have the cat examined to rule out any physical causes (especially if you notice litter-box problems, which may indicate a urinary tract infection or blockage). Then work with your vet to help treat the separation anxiety.
