attaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome has admitted that the city’s tourist targets will fall short by around one million arrivals this year, but added he expected numbers to grow by around 12 percent in 2016. Current estimates are that around 9 million tourists, international and local, will visit the Eastern Seaboard resort this calendar year, compared with 10.2 million in 2014. Itthiphol’s optimistic prediction for 2016 was based partly on the doubling of passenger capacity at Rayong’s U-Tapao airport. In particular, the no-frills carrier Air Asia is expected to extend its domestic and international routes – including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and several Chinese cities – to facilitate the arrival of one million tourists. Air-Asia Malaysia, which made its debut at U-Tapao last July with regular flights to and from Kuala Lumpur, has already triggered a traffic flow unseen at the U-Tapao airfield since it was handed

over to the Thai navy by the US in 1966. U-Tapao still retains other functions apart from civilian arrivals, especially flights for weather research and natural disaster surveillance in Asia. It also is a servicing hub for Thai Airways. It is generally accepted that the downturn in Pattaya’s international market in 2015 has been the retreat of the cash-strapped Russians with the value of their currency falling up to 40 percent as Moscow continues to admit the economic doldrums at home. Although there is no sign that the Russian market is about to pick up – Cambodia and Vietnam also report a shortage of Russian visitors – the slack in the market has been taken up by the Chinese. Their numbers arriving in Thailand have increased by over 40 percent in the last two years. Research has suggested that, although only one percent of mainland Chinese have so far visited Thailand, 50 percent would like to do so.

Meanwhile, a survey by a group of British travel agents has suggested that the Erawan Shrine bombing in Bangkok, which killed 20 people and injured 130, had little to do with the much-publicized cancellation of visits to Thailand. Asked to indicate their reservations about holidaying in Thailand, respondents mentioned Jet Ski and other scams and the pollution in some cities, but rarely mentioned the bombing plus a second explosion at Sathon pier which led to 35 countries warning their citizens to be circumspect. Respondent Joseph Freeman said, “Actually I don’t take any notice of travel advisories as they are mostly about protecting the government and the embassies and generally contain statements of the obvious.” He added that he and his friends might spend less Continued on page 4

Drain pipe just too narrow

Officials from Nongprue municipality and the director of sanitary division visited the area along Chonburi’s Highway Two after local people’s protest about the installation of waste water pipes. The concerned villagers pointed out that the

pipes were too small and would create mayhem and flooding every time there was a storm. Officials said they knew about the problem and would call another meeting to solicit the views of all.

Thief actually stole nothing A wannabe criminal sneaked into a South Pattaya hotel and entered six unlocked rooms of sleeping visitors. However, his total haul was just one mobile phone of staff before he disappeared back into the night. Police are earnestly examining CCTV tapes to look for identity clues. A hotel worker, Wimonrat Sirimon, said she was snoozing on a sofa when she heard a noise but then resumed her nap. According to police, tourists said their rooms had been disturbed but nothing taken.

Heavy drinking linked to death

Police drove in haste to Pattaya Beach after hearing that there was an expired farang laid near the drainage pipe construction site. Torsten Otto Rudolf Drews, a German national, had been discovered in a cold condition before dawn. There were several bottles of booze nearby, leading police to speculate he had a heart

attack after a heavy drinking bout. The corpse will be sent for autopsy and the relevant embassy informed. A witness, Sangob, said he had noticed the German man drinking at about 12:30 in the morning and became suspicious about the stranger never moved or changed position for a few hours.

Road holes cause crash

Close to the Bira Circuit, Route 36 entering Rayong was the scene of a nasty accident when an 18-wheeler truck carrying chemicals turned turtle after an unsurfaced area of the road struck the tyres. The driver, Komkrit Sukako, 25, and his mate were

taken to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and are said to be in a stable condition. The driver later said he was driving with a heavy load of chemicals to Laem Chabang port when the accident occurred. The chemicals did not spill out, a big relief to all concerned.

News Pattaya predictions 2016 Continued from page 1

Flood lessons Many householders in Pattaya are now recovering from the September flood which caused a lot of damage in some downtown areas. One of the lessons is that it’s not only the flood water coming in your front door which creates the mayhem. In some houses, the water oozes up from the plug hole in the domestic toilets. Oh well, forget it until the next time.

time in the metropolis and head straight for the provinces. Another respondent Hilary Walsh explained, “Explosions happen all over the world, not just in Thailand. Also, in my opinion, street crime in cities in the Philippines or in India is much more prevalent than in Thailand. In any case, we

keep in close touch with friends on Facebook and other social media, so we always know immediately what’s going on.” Frequent visitor Kevin Noonan added, “I have been coming to Pattaya for many years and have never seen any public disturbances which are always restricted to Bangkok. As for military coups,

Pattaya simply swallows them and carries on as normal. He added that his main concerns about Pattaya were the drinking restrictions and hours of opening for clubs. “Somebody should tell the government that 24-hour drinking is sensible in a holiday resort if you want to keep the tills merrily ringing,” Kevin concluded.

Store owner viciously attacked

Digging up Walking Street The latest idea to make use of the city’s plentiful pneumatic drills is to dig up the drains again and make them wider and longer. The work will begin in mid-October, just in time for the arrival of the much vaunted high season. The new project is designed to prevent flooding in the entertainment hotspots of Walking Street. Surprising that nobody thought of this before. No more vendors Street sellers will be banned from Walking Street as part of the efforts to improve tourist safety in our fair city. Until now, the flower sellers have been left largely untouched. City Hall is also ordering a crackdown on overhanging signs in Walking Street which can prevent fire engines approaching a conflagration or even fall down and injure people. This is another ongoing saga with a very long history. Worse than Pattaya As you sit in your car on Sukhumvit Road in a long queue created by the underpass-in-progress, bear in mind that traffic chaos is much worse in Manila, capital of the Philippines. Over there, a taxi ride which would take 10 minutes here will likely last almost an hour. One of the problems in Manila is that new roads are forever being constructed as current roads are closed down for the diggers, but they never seem to be completed.

A man and his wife running a small retail outlet on Naklua Soi 17 were shocked to the core when a Thai entered the shop and told them not to sell any more goods. The stranger then struck Kittichai Chuetrakul, 47, with a bottle and then punched his victim before escaping as a motorbike pillion passenger even as he fired a gunshot

in the air. Kittichai told investigators that most of his customers were Chinese tourists and he had no idea of the reason for the unwarranted assault on him. Police later found a 9mm cartridge in the road and promised to check the CCTV footage of the incident, if any, in an attempt to apprehend the villain.

Two large trucks collide

Sunday brunch The incredible Sunday brunch at Pattaya’s prestigious Hilton is really something special. The cost is 1,400 baht nett (wine flow buffet 1,100 baht) with children under six eating free. You’ll find it on level 14 of the hotel. Be sure to remember to take a healthy appetite with you. There are also excellent-value buffets, one theme per day, Mondays thru’ Saturdays at under 600 baht. Egg question News reports are saying that plastic eggs are being mixed with real ones in trays now on sale. Apparently the fake ones give off a terrible smell when cooked or fried. Some people claim that this scam has been going on for a long time. But critics wonder why criminals would bother when making a plastic egg is more expensive than using a real one. Visa confusion A new six-month, multiple-entry visa to Thailand is now available at some Thai embassies worldwide for 5,000 baht. Allegedly, the move is to boost tourism, but it’s not obvious how it will do that. Multiple-entry tourist visas are already available, so it’s not clear what is new … other than the price. Some Thai embassies in Asia are already saying that they issue only single-entry visas and others are claiming they don’t know anything about the new opportunity. Hey ho! Retirement visas It’s getting more and more complicated to obtain a one-year retirement visa if your current visa is a 15- or 30-day stamp or a 60day tourist visa. In the old days, the local immigration bureau could convert your visa to non-immigrant status in a simple procedure. Now everyone without a non-immigrant visa has to visit the immigration headquarters in Bangkok to obtain the right stamp in your passport. Then it’s back to the local bureau to complete the procedure and get your retirement visa, assuming your documents are in order of course! Thought for the week “You must understand I’m most definitely a man of principle … but, if you don’t like them … I’ve got others I can use.” (Groucho Marx).

Police rushed to Highway 7 towards Pattaya after two 18-wheeler trucks were involved in a collision when one vehicle struck the other from behind. The driver of the front truck, Chakaj Jiwjongboon, 32, said he had parked his truck by the side of the road to take a nap when he felt a bump from the rear. After about 10 minutes, he felt a

loud bump at the rear and found that another truck had run into his vehicle. The second driver Prakob Onnom, 34, was found to be dead. Police confirmed that Chakaj had informed them before the incident that he was going to park and speculated that Prakob may have fallen asleep at the wheel or not noticed the obstruction in front of him.

American guy jumps to doom Another foreigner has killed himself, seemingly in a state of depression about his health. Police rushed to the View Talay Pattaya Beach Condominium, Second Road, after learning that security guard had found a corpse which had fallen many storeys. Hector Luis Ortiz Jr, 32 and American, had lived on the 16th floor with his Thai boyfriend, but there was no sign in the room of any struggle or violence. It is believed Ortiz was very concerned about a serious health problem and may have decided to end his mortal existence whilst his mind was disturbed. Investigators will interview the Thai man to ascertain more information about this tragic case.

Snap Judgment The PM returns Prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had a much better reception at the 70th United Nations General Assembly than his critics had predicted. It had been feared that the juntainstalled leader might speak off-the-cuff or crack jokes or spend his time justifying last year’s military putsch. But no. The general met with many world leaders, including the presidents of the US and China as well as the secretary general of the UN, whilst receiving the ITU Global Sustainable Digital Development Award from the International Telecommunications Union. Not to mention his acceptance on behalf of Thailand of the rotating chairmanship of the Group of 77 for 2016-17. Perhaps the most important feature was the meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. General Prayut wisely did not repeat the various justifications for the coup – the threat of civil war and the chaos brought about by elected politicians – but explained the road map set by his government and the National Council for Peace and Order. He told Ban that a general election would be held in Thailand in mid-2017 and this is a promise to the world community that must not be broken. It is well known that there are individuals and groups in Thailand who have pressurized the junta to rule indefinitely until the country has been “reformed” politically and economically. Not a good idea. The longer military rule remains in place, the less effective it is likely to become. The tallest challenge currently facing the government – apart from the obvious dilemmas of rewriting the constitution – is economic. In other words, the task is to stimulate the economy at a time of a quasi-international recession and falling Thai exports. Even the falling baht has not done much to stimulate exports because many other key currencies, with the notable exception of the US dollar, have fallen too. So the government is relying on boosting domestic demand as a way of combating these problems. But that is where the term “populism” enters the picture and that is indeed a controversial issue in the Land of Smiles. The expression “Prachaniyorn” means “popular with the people” and is often used to illustrate the policies of the Shinawatra years and its give-away budgets which eventually wreaked havoc with the national budget, in particular the rice subsidy scheme which some commentators believe was the major factor in the bringing down of the Yingluck government in May 2014. The term “Prachaniyorn” has now become a taboo expression to the current administration because it is seen as the mechanism by which politicians bought their way into power at the next general election: the people’s tax money was used to purchase the votes of the rural constituents. Nonetheless, “Prachaniyorn” is still fine in the eyes of those who believe it is an effective way of lifting grass-roots people out of poverty. The official policy of the current government is “Pracharath”, or “State of the People”, which is a good deal more difficult to summarize than its competitor expression. The term “Pracharath” is, in effect, taken from the national anthem and indicates efforts to reduce inequality and to prevent people from being misguided too easily. The prime minister sought to explain the term by saying populism may have been the starting point for economic policy before the advance towards a welfare state. Once you have a welfare state, he argued, you no longer need populist measures. On the other hand, it can be argued that welfare state countries such as the UK still try to “bribe” the electorate at election time, usually by flirting with income tax rates. So the challenge for the current government is to boost financially the agricultural sector, still the backbone of the country, whilst avoiding a dependency culture for the poor which is easily exploited for political reasons. Both “Prachaniyorn” and “Pracharath” at the end of the day are about government largesse and budgets for local tambons. The crunch point is whether “Pracharath” can deliver the much-needed stimulus whilst building up immunity to future political manipulation. The outcome of the 2017 general election should settle that most contentious argument. In the short term anyway.

Air quality improves in South Thailand by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org

Air quality in Phuket and a number of other provinces in South Thailand has improved and is now well within the limit set for public safety standards, according to Thailand’s Pollution Control Department. The Department has released a report affirming that as of October 9, particulate matter in Surat Thani, Songkhla, Satun, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and

Phuket is between 52 and 100 microgrammes per cubic metre of air. In Phuket specifically, the level has sharply decreased to 72 microgrammes per cubic metre. Haze is largely reported as generated by smoke from Indonesian agricultural fires. The limit for public safety standards is at 120 microgrammes per cubic metre. All concerned authorities in Thailand have joined hands to tackle the haze that covers

some provinces in the South of Thailand. Immediate safety measures were put in place after the haze caused visibility reduction and particulate matter increment over the past few days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs officer had a meeting with the Indonesian Ambassador for cooperation to alleviate the situation. It would also seek the cooperation of haze-affected neighbours such as Malaysia

in joining discussions with Indonesia. Authorities are constantly monitoring the air quality and will make further announcement as the situation develops. In Phuket, in particular, a meeting was held among concerned authorities on October 7, 2015 to address the situation, and a 24/7 Centre of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Region 18 – Phuket was set up to monitor the haze situation.

Thai reporter wins 2015 AFP Kate Webb Prize by Agence France-Presse (AFP) photo: Christophe Archambault

Thai investigative journalist Mutita Chuachang will receive the 2015 Kate Webb Prize from Agence France-Presse (AFP) for her independent reporting on human rights including Thailand’s draconian use of the royal defamation law. Mutita is the assistant editor of the non-profit online newspaper Prachatai, where she has worked since 2004. Mutita’s painstaking reporting has sought to make a record of all of those accused of breaching the law despite the challenges posed by the opacity of the Thai legal system as well as the wider social taboo that cloaks the subject. “ W e a re re c o g n i s i n g

Mutita for her efforts to present a balanced, in-depth coverage of sensitive topics in Thailand, which can be difficult in an extremely dynamic political environment,” said Philippe Massonnet, AFP’s regional director for the Asia-Pacific region. The prize, which includes a g r a n t o f 3 , 0 0 0 e u ro s (US$3,400), recognises Asian journalists for exceptional work in dangerous or difficult conditions. It is named after New Zealander Kate Webb, one of AFP’s finest correspondents, who died in 2007 at the age of 64. Webb earned a reputation as a fearless reporter while covering the Vietnam War and other historic events in Asia during a career spanning four decades,

Thai Asia executive Sasitorn Srisamai visited City Hall to discuss the new domestic and international routes which will soon be operational at U-tapao Airport. is that it draws attention to this difficult time for human rights in Thailand. When we wrote these stories we were not thinking about being courageous – we all just felt that it was something we had to do and my organisation Prachatai was incredibly supportive.”

HAVANA HOSTS AUSTRALIAN WINE TASTING NIGHT

Arabic Lamb Kofta

Outback Jack Goes to Havana

A Chic Cuban-Retro Bar/Restaurant Havana is located on the ground floor of Holiday Inn Pattaya. This lounge bar is classy and upscale reconstructing the Cuban bars of the fascinating ’30s and ’40s when Hemmingway created the now famous Daiquiris and the iconic Mojito cocktail. Soaring wooden ceilings, deep mahogany-coloured leather sofas, comfy easy chairs, black and white photos from the era, huge Cuban-style chandeliers all contribute to the mood emulating a watering hole where Papa Hemingway would have been happy to while away a few hours. This bar is plush, sophisticated and unique. We were there for an evening of slurping and sipping the wines from Southeast Australia and in particular the Eden Gate wines bearing the Outback Jack labels. The evening kicked off with a fresh fruity glass of Semillon Sauvignon Blanc which with its clean, fresh palate was the perfect appetiser. Executive Chef Jason Large and his brigade had excelled themselves with a selection of creative canapés the likes of

chicken pate bruschetta with green apple relish, vegetable hosomaki rolls, Arabic lamb kofta, avocado and tomato bruschetta, salami Ventricina, Mali chicken kathi rolls and much, much more. It was a pleasure to trawl the tables enjoying the global cuisine generated from this inventive kitchen. Cabernet Merlot followed with tastes of ripened berries and subtle whispers of spice, vanilla and oak and proved the wine of choice for both Mick and me that evening. A classic Shiraz Merlot was a fruity mouthful and we enjoyed its soft subtle tannins which married well with the generous selection of cheese, breads, and grissini together with premier olives, cornichons and baby pickled onions. The last three pourings were from the Stable Hill Private Bin G portfolio and exemplified a noble bearing especially the Cabernet Sauvignon with its rich elegant finish and good balance whilst the Chardonnary reminded us of a Chablis with its full-bodied citrus and apple components.

These tasting events are staged regularly and are excellent value for money and great fun affairs. Holiday Inn Pattaya host an enjoyable cordial evening with live music, happy friendly staff together with a posse of wine lovers who enjoy every drop of the goblet or two with great humour and conviviality. It’s certainly a fun evening. Check out their website for their monthly wine tasting event.

Although Havana is the signature bar/restaurant of Holiday Inn Pattaya, all food and drinks on their menu are inclusive of service charge and government tax; Happy Hour runs from 3 till 5 pm for pizzas and 5 till 7 pm for drinks. Overall the prices are in line with a quality bar/ restaurant and the diversity of their rums, single malts and Belgian beers are considerable, while wines are sourced from around the world and offer something for all pockets. The menu is eclectic: modern Italian meets cosmopolitan American in Asia. From pizzas, pasta, antipasti and salads through Asian noodles and Thai snacks to bar bites and burgers, it’s across-the-board cuisine sweeping the foodie favourites of visitors from around the world. The burger platters are huge. We challenge Godzilla and King Kong on one of their date nights to finish the Chicken BLT/burger (B.350); it’s massive, stacked with fried chicken breasts, crispy bacon, tomatoes, mayo and homemade tomato relish all served in a hefty bun and accompanied by Havana’s onion rings and “fat chips”. Chunky fat fingers of potatoes, still in their skins, are fried to precision and seasoned with paprika, rosemary and garlic. These are fantastic and in my view, definitely worth the extra calories! Other varieties are the classic allAmerican with cheddar cheese, dill pickles, and a battered and fried white fish burger with lettuce, onion and tomato with tartar sauce.

Pizzas are much in demand here and usually enjoyed on the large terrace over looking the bay of Pattaya. The “La Vostra pizza”, priced at B.420, offers the opportunity to create your own bespoke pie with a choice from all the ingredients imaginable. A Little India pizza is served with the usual mozzarella and tomato sauce but stacked with lashings of chicken tikka, red onion, green pepper, and mango and mint chutney. The classic Margherita comes in at B.270 but why stop there when you can order Hip Special No. 3 called the Ugly Duckling with the basic tomato/mozzarella layer piled with smoked duck breast, mango, sundried tomatoes, red pepper, rocket and pesto sauce. The selection is hot and spicy, soft and creamy, tropical with pineapple and red chilli or meaty with pork sausage, bacon, butchers ham and salami. Holiday Inn Pattaya is to be congratulated for creating a standalone bar/restaurant that will attract the patronage of their hotel guests, locals and tourists alike. It’s an atmospheric spot evoking the old style Havana glamour tempered with an up-to-date fusion. The pricing is realistic and the food big on quality and quantity making Havana a distinctive leisure destination.

AROI PUB RESTO Welcomes New Manager Ever fantasized about being “beamed” over to some place rather than an exhausting plane journey? Well, that is exactly the feeling that overcame us when we walked into the Aroi Pub Resto recently. Stepping inside this stylish pub/restaurant is the equivalent of being “beamed” the 9,000 km or so to a Belgian resto. It’s a big, bright friendly place with a garden, pool table, inviting bar and lots of well spaced tables for laid-back dining. The décor is classic modern continental style with colourful bar neons and upholstered bench seating, but the real eye catcher is the most extraordinary chandelier which is made up of hundreds of sparkling glass beer mugs hung on a seven-tiered extravaganza of a light fixture which beams light from this contemporary work of art. Aroi is Belgian owned and newly managed by Peter de Kegel who brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new appointment. Cordial and sociable his front of house manner assures a friendly welcome to this popular pub. The doors open at 12 noon with a comprehensive menu to suit all occasions. The famous French snack Croque Monsieur and Madame is available from B.155 and big crusty baguettes come packed with ham, cheese, tuna mayo and even chicken curry. The starter menu is an interesting collection of European and Thai dishes while the beef tenderloin and rib eye (from B.355) are flamed

to order and served with a choice of sauces. Belgium, of course, is famous for its beer with its nationals imbibing 150 litres per person per year. So naturally this patriotic bar is a firm proponent of their amber nectar. Over a dozen beers are on offer, ranging from Leffe Blond or Dark, Hoegaarden – the famous white beer with an aroma of orange peel, coriander and spice, to Kasteel Bier with a whopping alcoholic content of 11 percent, to the mysterious monastery beer from the Trappist monks of Rochefort. Friday night offers moules-frites and a giant mixed meat brochette (beef, pork, chicken and shrimps) which both come with a complimentary salad bar, Wednesday night is the all-you-can-

eat buffet with Apero and desserts for B.295 and Sundays offer spare ribs, rotisserie chicken and one changing carvery for only B.259 from 1 pm till 9 pm. During the week a 3-course lunch menu is available for B.195. Mick and I made a special visit to taste the mussels recently and while waiting the arrival of this shellfish phenomenon that has now become Belgium’s national dish we enjoyed a glass of chilled Chardonnay. These marvelous molluscs are served Provencale style, natural or in a creamy garlicky sauce with prices starting at B.295. A big pot of these steaming lovelies hit the table accompanied by the essential crisp Belgian frites and the obligatory cup of mayonnaise. These big, buxom moules

smothered in the Provencale sauce were delicious especially with the freshly baked bread to mop up all the juices. The other Friday night special is their house brochettes. Served fashionably on a suspended rack, these huge grilled kebabs offer tender chunks of marinated mixed meats. Look out for the “Specials Board” as there’s always something interesting on offer. On the night we visited it was chicken breast stuffed with Parma ham and foie gras or the famous steak tartare. For a true taste of Belgium try the beef stew (prepared de rigueur with Belgian beer) or the chicken stew, known as Waterzooi, which actually translates as “watery mess” but, of course, is nothing of the kind as it’s a national treasure and is, in fact, chicken layered with vegetables, poached in wine and broth and then thickened with egg yolks and cream. There’s so much on this menu from the big, beefy burgers (from B.165), the selection of pastas, especially their signature lasagna plus the interesting selection of pizzas or indeed the full Thai menu. Do not leave Aroi without tasting one of their delectable desserts.

Chocolate mousse oozes with decadent joy while the tiramisu and panna cotta would put a sunny smile on any sweet-toothed diner. Pancakes are another speciality with the queen of pancakes –Suzette – getting the royal flambé treatment. Aroi is the friendliest pub/diner around. In fact it also has a big heart. No waste at this community-minded restaurant they make a weekly food donation to The Shelter for the kids to also enjoy their delicious dishes. (Other restaurants please note). Come here for quality produce at reasonable prices with those specialities from Belgium taking pride of place, especially of course the splendid mussels. Aroi Pub Resto is open daily except Mondays from 12 noon to 10 pm (last orders 9:45 pm). It is situated on Soi 89, Sukhumvit Road. Continue on Sukhumvit Road heading towards Sattahip. Soi 89 is on the left with a 7-Eleven on the corner. Drive over the railway track and Aroi Pub is about 200 metres on your right. Tel: 087 0433 227 or 082 459 5733. Party bookings accepted and a catering service is available.

Cold Facts

Monsoons have finally reached Pattaya, not to mention typhoons and a host of tropical storms. Along with the change in weather comes an increase in a number of medical ailments—most notably colds. The common cold is readily shared among friends and family members as well as fellow shoppers, workmates and partygoers. Colds are actually most contagious before symptoms appear and during the first two to four days after symptoms start to appear. So when you feel a cold coming on, do your best to avoid close contact with others and be sure to wash your hands frequently. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or handkerchief when you sneeze or cough, or use the crook of your elbow (but not your bare hand, lest you later touch people or objects and spread germs). Some cold sufferers load up on

vitamin C or Echinacea, but there is little proof that vitamin C has any remedial effect once you have a cold, though it may help prevent it in the first place. Simply put, the experts still have not found a cure for the common cold. On the other hand, as mother probably said, you should eat some chicken soup. The hot liquid helps break up nasal congestion and eases stuffiness. Some studies suggest that chicken soup inhibits the inflammatory response that leads to a sore throat. Furthermore, when you're feeling run-down, the combination of lean protein and vegetables can help boost your strength to help fight off illness. The best way to keep from catching or spreading a cold is by washing your hands thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds) and frequently. Hand sanitizers can be an effective supplement to hand washing.

The MIND diet now Before you get any older and worry even more about the risks of Alzheimer’s disease, set out now to begin making food choices that may reduce your odds of getting the dreaded ailment. In a number of studies, researchers have found that people who adhered to a diet that included foods like berries, leafy green vegetables, and fish were rewarded with a major decline in their risk for the memory-sapping disorder. The eating plan is called the MIND diet, standing for MediterraneanDASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. You no doubt are aware of the Mediterranean diet, as practiced by most residents in the south of Europe. DASH is an acronym for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

Ready to start protecting your mind? Eat foods from these 10 food groups: • Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week • Other vegetables: At least one a day • Nuts: A handful five times a week • Berries (any kind): Two or more servings a week • Beans: At least three servings a week • Whole grains: Three or more servings a day • Fatty fish: Twice a week • Poultry : Two times a week • Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking and salad oil • Wine: One glass a day Avoid: • Red meat: Less than four servings a week

• Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily • Cheese: Less than one serving a week • Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week • Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week • White rice, flour, sugar The Benefits One study showed that people who stuck to the MIND diet lowered their risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 54 percent. More importantly, researchers found that adults who followed the diet only part of the time still cut their risk of the disease by about 35 percent. But those who followed these guidelines only moderately had almost no drop in risk. The American Heart Association suggests eating two servings of fatty fish a week. A serving is 3 ounces (about 100 grams or the size of your fist). Try it baked, grilled, or poached.

Five Tips to Help Relieve Dry Skin in Wet Weather The weather outside is frightful…some days. But rain or shine, many women are burdened with dry skin. Here are several things you can do to combat dryness while helping to make your skin supple and smooth. • Wear cotton and other natural fibers instead of synthetics or other fabrics that might be scratchy and irritating. • Don’t allow yourself to get dehydrated; drink plenty of water. • Include essential fatty acids like Omega-3 in your diet to help fortify the skin’s natural oil-retaining barriers. Salmon, halibut and/or sardines two or three times a week, flax, walnuts, and safflower oil every day. • For redness or inflammation, apply a cool compress or an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream on the area for a week. If these don’t provide relief, talk to your doctor. • If the air in your home is dry, use a humidifier to help keep skin hydrated.

Another Country is the 29th studio album by British singersongwriter Rod Stewart. It is due to be released on October 23, 2015 through Capitol Records. It was produced by Stewart and Kevin Savigar. Stewart stated that "Batman Superman Spiderman" was written about bedtime stories that he would tell his youngest son, Aiden Patrick Stewart, based around the three fictional superheroes. The album's title track, "Another Country" was inspired by Stewart's respect for the armed forces – a respect influenced by his birth occurring shortly before the end of the Second World War – and consequent musing on life in the armed forces, particularly regarding the emotions generated by being apart from loved ones. "Love Is" was released as the lead single from Another Country on June 23, 2015. In the United States, the single's current peak is at no. 37 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Vespa, Italian for 'wasp', is the name of a legendary two-wheeler with retro styling, agile maneuverability and amazing fuel consumption. Pattaya Today Automotive takes this iconic Italian scooter out for a spin. Bella Macchina Italiano! There's always something about these cool, ultra-trendy Italians and their amazing machines: Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati supercars. Ducati, Moto Guzzi performance bikes and Vespa motor scooters. The Italian Vespa brand was born after the Second World War in 1946 when Enrico Piaggio “the man who put Italy on two wheels” arrived at Florence's patent office and posted a trademark. Sixty plus years later and after more than 18 million vehicles sold over the five continents Vespa scooters are still going strong. Movie stars and pop singers are usually seen stepping out of their white Audi SUVs and black Range Rovers. But, did you know that celebrities love these compact Italian two-wheelers. There's Justin Bieber in Venice riding without a helmet! Blond Gwyneth Paltrow and daughter riding pillion on a California school run, the portly bearded hipster 'Hangover' star Zach Galifianakis and of course, Brad Pitt with shades riding a rusty vintage Vespa in Vietnam. The Thai Vespiario Bangkok flagship showroom occupies over 600 sqm at A Square, an upscale lifestyle space on Sukhumvit Soi 26 close to Rama IV Road opposite K Village. Vespiario (Thailand) Co., Ltd. is the authorized distributor of Vespa, Piaggio scooters and Alpinestars products in Thailand. Alpinestars is an Italian manufacturer of motor racing, action sports and casual clothing. The well-stocked retail outlet is next door to Vespiario. Here you'll get completely fitted and kitted out. Back in the Vespiario showroom motor scooters galore. Different

models with different paint jobs powered by 125 cc, 150 cc and 300 air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke engines. The showroom also boasts of a merchandise shop, service facilities and the Vespa gallery with '60s and '70s colorful posters on the walls and on display some 20 unique new Vespas each individually painted and accessorized. These mobile artworks are not for sale. Except one. The limited edition of the matt black Vespa 946 Emporio Armani developed to highlight the 40-year Emporio Armani fashion brand and celebrate the 150th birthday of Piaggio in 1946. Price a cool 599,000 baht! The Pattaya Today demonstrator is the entry level 125 cc Vespa Primavera in cool Volcano Black. A glance at the Primavera immediately brings to mind the classic Vespa style. Now, with new and futuristic looks showing off sleek lines and the right amount of chrome. The tail is pointed and tapered, just like on the first prototype that inspired the name “Vespa” because of its similarity to a wasp. Primavera's curb weight 118 kg combined 11-inch wheels make this Vespa perfect for moving about through city traffic. The increased wheelbase 1,340 mm enhances riding stability while maintaining Vespa's characteristic lightweight steering and agility. The new Vespa Primavera is the perfect beginner's scooter. Electric ignition. Press start button. Twist the throttle. Off you scoot! Piece of cake. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a CVT-type smooth automatic transmission. No clutch, no messing about with your foot on the peg switching gears like on many motorbikes. The Primavera you can ride in your tuxedo, dinner jacket (and a black helmet) since the engine is enclosed and a flat floorboard (providing foot

protection), and a prominent front fairing (providing wind protection) plus solid rear mirrors for rear view. Safety comes with a rigid steel body, LED daylight running lights and the new braking system with 200 mm diameter front disc and new front suspension. Verdict: The Primavera felt very light and nimble as I eased out into the busy Sukhumvit Road and Rama IV. And for a short test ride, I really enjoyed the experience. This is a very agile, cool, little machine and a blast

to ride, perfect for scooting or getting around the city. Absolutely brilliant! Perhaps, it’s time you find out for yourself. Treat yourself this coming cool season to a Vespa Primavera test ride. The football size parking lot outside Vespiario flagship showroom is perfect for a spin. However, safe riding is a must. Always ride with a proper helmet, jacket, gloves and of course, long pants and shoes or boots. No flip-flops. Thank you!

Expense is justified by fuel economy, styling and high build quality including lots of fun. Pattaya Today rating: Five out of five stars. Wanna go scooting? LEGAL ADVICE

by Magna Carta Law Office

Accounting and Financial Reports What is a financial statement? A financial statement is a formal record of the financial activities of a business, person, or other entity presenting the results of operations and the financial position of the company. Who shall have the duty to keep accounts? A registered partnership, public limited company, or limited company established under Thai law, a juristic person established under foreign law engaging in a business in Thailand, and a joint venture under the Revenue Code shall have the duty to keep accounts, and must provide the bookkeeping for its business operations in accordance with the details, rules and procedures prescribed under the Accounting Act, B.E. 2543 (2000). Failure to provide bookkeeping or comply with the regulations shall be liable to penalty. All companies in Thailand need to prepare and comply with the following: - Monthly financial reports (balance sheet, profit and loss statement) - Withholding corporate income tax return (PND 3, 53) - Withholding income tax remittance return (PND 54) - Half-year corporate income tax return (PND 51) - Value added tax return (PP 30) - Annual corporate income tax return (PND 50) - Annual financial statement - Accounting transactions record What is a balance sheet? A balance sheet is a financial statement that summarizes a company’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific point in time. It’s called a balance sheet because the two sides balance out. A company has to pay for all the things it has (assets) by either borrowing money (liabilities) or getting it from shareholders (shareholders’ equity). These three balance sheet segments give investors an idea as to what the company owns and owes, as well as the amount invested by the shareholders. Why do we need a balance sheet? This report can be used to obtain a complete picture of the financial results and financial position

of a business on the last date of the financial year. A balance sheet records the arrangement of money in a business and it shows the accounting value of all the company’s assets, liabilities and equity at one moment in time, which may lead to conclusions regarding the liquidity of the entity. Balance sheet data can be used to compute key indicators that reveal the company’s ability to meet its obligations. When must a balance sheet be made and submitted? The submission of financial statements shall be in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed by the Directors-General of the Revenue Department and the Department of Business Development. A balance sheet must be made at least once every 12 months. Such 12-month period constitutes the company’s accounting period or financial year. A newly established company should close accounts within 12 months from its registration. This must be certified by a qualified external auditor and must be filed with the Revenue Department and Department of Business Development every year. The balance sheet must be examined by one or more auditors and submitted for adoption to a general meeting within four months after its date. A copy of it must be sent to every person entered in the register of shareholders at least three days before the general meeting. Copies must also be kept open at the offices of the company during the same period for inspection by the shareholders. Where the accounts or the documents relevant thereto are lost or damaged, the person having the duty to keep accounts shall notify the Chief Accounts Inspector or the Accounts Inspector of the loss or damage, in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed by the Director-General, within 15 days from the date of knowledge thereof, or the date such loss or damage ought to have been known. What happens upon failure to submit the audited financial statement on time? The company’s annual financial statement must be filed, along with its annual income tax return, with the Revenue Department and Department of Business Development, within 150 days after the end of its accounting period. If a company fails to submit its audited financial statement within the required time then the company is liable to a certain penalty or fine which may also be applicable to its responsible officer. Can a company change its year-cycle of account? If a company wishes to change its accounting period, it must obtain written approval from the Chief Accounts Inspector of the Revenue Department by submitting Form SorBorChor 4 together with other documents specified in the mentioned form.

Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley

From Food to Chanel In previous articles we have touched on the unpredictable state of the markets in today’s financial climate. Europe, including Britain, is still the largest trading block on our green Earth and, although grappling with debt, it still represents the world’s biggest customers and is seeing the beginnings of an upturn, albeit patchy. Also, corporate America is faring well and always remember what the Oracle of Omaha (Warren Buffett) said, “Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.” So, in that vein, there are always opportunities that are carefully selected. The problem during the recent crisis was that, instead of specific sectors bringing the world indices down, as in the past, the whole market took the hit when bad news reared its head.

Consequently, sectors that should not have been necessarily affected by the doom and gloom got dragged down with the rest. That said, as things stabilise, allocation becomes the name of the game. In that context, there are funds that exist either in the “fundamental” space, or others that occupy a “niche” position. Today, we are going to look at one of each. Starting with farming, there are a few funds in the agricultural sector that, in reasonable times, have performed very well against many other sectors and their peer group. Given that we all need to eat, a well-placed offering covering many aspects of the food chain can provide a fairly safe bet for medium term money. In fact, according to UN forecasts, the world’s population will have swollen by around 30 percent to 9 billion people by 2050. If the agricultural sector is to provide sufficient output to feed this soaring population, it will need to take a giant leap forward. The extra demand will already make itself felt in the near future, with sharply increasing trade volumes for agricultural products. At the same time though, on the supply side, the amount of available fertile land is dwindling, not only because of the continuing spread of residential and industrial areas, combined with their respective transport routes, but also as a result of the climate-induced decline of useable agricultural land, particularly in the southern hemisphere. Secondly, the luxury market has a number “premium brand” funds invested, as the name suggests, in the world’s top brands, from Gucci to Rolex, and beyond. Although they may not be seeing meteoric growth in the developed markets, the emerging economies have a huge appetite for luxury goods; understandable for the newly wealthy with cash to spare. Over the recent past, the vast majority of the premium-brand companies confirmed that the emerging markets’ desire for luxury goods remains strong. Although there has been a recent slowdown, China is clearly the most significant of the newer buyers in the region. Nonetheless, demand is on the increase in many other countries in Asia, with India posting strong growth. It may or may not be the right time to enter the markets in the short term, even given the relatively robust statistics in both these sectors but, in our view, those looking for a “buy and hold” investment, without an income requirement for the next five years or more, could do a lot worse than take these sectors into consideration. Land Prices Are Still On the Move! I can remember writing in an April article back in 2006 that Pattaya’s land prices are no longer ‘Dirt Cheap’! Even though land prices had already gone up considerably over the couple of years leading up to 2006, many local and foreign speculators were banking on land prices becoming even more expensive—rising sharply during the year 2007. Little did they know at that time that the world economic crisis was just around the corner, and you would have thought that was the end of Thailand’s ‘Dream Run’ on escalating land prices. But did we see land prices go down? No! Did we see land prices level out? No! In fact, land prices haven’t missed a beat over the last 12 years and all indications are that prices will continue going up! We have seen housing development go up and down and go east and now south. We have seen the condo market go from large luxury sizes to very small units. We have seen the hospitality sector first going through a phase of serviced apartments and then into a full-blown hotel boom. We have seen buyers plunking down the British pound (from 2003 to 2008), and then it was the Thai baht, and the Russian ruble, and now we are seeing cash-ready mainland Chinese with lots of yuan to invest in residential properties and hotels/ resorts. This great rise in foreign investment and vacant land pricing over the past decade or more has occurred in spite of the civil disturbances, red shirts/ yellow shirts, SARS, terrorists in the south, massive flooding, military coup and take over and even the tsunami! In fact, not even our recent new-construction condo dilemma has had any effect at all on the area’s land prices; they just keep going up! These major events have given way to an even more powerful influence…the strategic planning

and financial support being made by the Thai government within the Pattaya-Eastern Seaboard area’s industrial and tourism sector, which is teeming with signs of progress. The modern Suvarnabhumi Airport is ten times larger than Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport, only an hour plus from Pattaya, and it is one of the larger airports in the world. Suvarnabhumi, having been open now for almost ten years, is a fabulous addition to an already thriving tourist business, and it is a sure bet to continue bringing in larger and larger numbers of tourists and increased interest in the Pattaya-Eastern Seaboard area. Now we also have the new U-Tapao International Airport south of Pattaya, which is scheduled to bring in an even greater number of international travelers. Three Polo Clubs, the Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark, a huge, 100-rai water park at Silverlake and a queue is forming of the most respected international hotels poised to move in to grace our beachfronts—not to mention two mega high-rise hotel-condominium complex developments scheduled to be built in Na Jomtien—are just a few of the many dynamic happenings in our area that insure our Eastern Seaboard’s sound future. Does the presence of these world-class accommodations, entertainment venues and tourist destinations have an effect on real estate and land prices in the area? Absolutely! So, whether you are a homebuyer considering a small plot on which to build your dream home, or a serious developer looking to purchase a large beachfront parcel for a luxury condominium or housing project… you might strongly consider buying now! In fact, I can tell you there are more land investment funds and purchasers surveying the Eastern Seaboard now than at any time in the last 25 or more years. Why now? The masses

worldwide—including Thailand—do not have nearly as much disposable income as they had during past years, but don’t be naïve thinking that money has disappeared...as it certainly has not. No, all that disposable income has been transferred into the hands of the financial elite; that is just as true here in Thailand as it is in the rest of the world. Assuming you had received this abundance of new wealth (cash money!) in today’s financial scenario, would you put your money in the bank…absolutely not! Voila! Land is looking very attractive and the numbers of sales and potential buyers are incredible right now. Looking back just a few years in and around the greater Pattaya area will help you understand how land prices have arrived at this point…and just where they are heading. Today in the Jomtien Beach area, there are a couple 10 to 25 rai land parcels on Jomtien Beach Road priced for sale at 70 to 80 million baht a rai, with a couple small (less than a rai) parcels in the busiest part of Jomtien Beach’s Soi 1 and 2 beachfront area selling at prices based upon a 100 million baht a rai. Back in 2011, a 19-rai parcel directly on Jomtien Beach Road sold for about 25 million baht per rai—more than double their 2006 price—and we are already seeing much higher asking prices (tripled!) because, quite frankly, we are running out of beachfront land parcels! Going south from Pattaya along the sea and in the interior such as Huay Yai and Na Jomtien is where so much development has begun. Several luxury housing developments featuring beachfront homes are priced as high as 128 million baht (Baan Talay Thewa). That’s more than US $3 million! As a result of developments like this, there is purchasing and building activity all the way down to the Bangsaray

Beach area and up into the Bangsarey Hills. Land parcel prices have risen in the Na Jomtien-Bangsaray Beach area and at a good rate of increase as well, with very few beachfront land plots still available. There are two Na Jomtien Beachfront land parcels, 59 and 60 rai each, from the beach to the Sukhumvit Highway for sale in the range of 35 to 37 million baht per rai. These large beachfront land parcels are definitely on the move and selling now, with a 59-rai beachfront to Sukhumvit Highway land parcel having sold recently next to Ambassador City, and a massive 149-rai land parcel with 80 meters on the Bangsaray beachfront to the Sukhumvit Highway having just sold. Another outstanding area to watch very closely is just east of Bangsaray Beach, the Buraran Hills and on to Buddha Mountain and the Silver Lake Vineyards and Winery, which are leading the way to unprecedented growth. Gorgeous sea-view properties in the Bangsarey Hills area that were selling as low as 250,000 baht per rai around 1997 started their rise to about 350,000 baht

Prices are even higher today with one-rai plots now selling in the Bangsarey Hills and Silverlake areas for around 3 to 6 million baht depending on the number of rai in the parcel. Yes land prices in Pattaya and surrounding areas have not stopped climbing for a single minute with the Na Jomtien, Bangsaray, Buraran Hills and Silverlake areas being the current great success stories here on the Eastern Seaboard. They are definitely areas to keep an eye on before prices just go out of sight. In spite of everything from the tsunami to Thailand’s recent military takeover, the PattayaEastern Seaboard area is enjoying unprecedented increases in land prices, and everything points to continued robust interest from abroad, making foreign investment in vacant land extremely attractive. Yes, land prices are definitely ‘On the Move’ and Pattaya’s land prices are no longer ‘Dirt Cheap’! Now that’s an investment you can bet on!

Lee Chee Koon, Ascott’s chief executive officer, said, “Ascott has been expanding beyond the capital cities to other areas with significant growth opportunities for serviced residences. Pattaya is a major city in Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard region with many multinational companies and also a popular tourist destination.” The new management contracts in Pattaya will strengthen Ascott’s position as the largest international serviced residence owner-operator in Thailand. The four new properties in Thailand – Citadines North Pattaya, Citadines Central Pattaya, Citadines Jomtien Beach Pattaya and Somerset Wong Amat Beach Pattaya – will be

Citadines North Pattaya ready to welcome guests from 2018. The four new properties in Pattaya will cater to different segments of corporate and leisure travellers and they signal Ascott’s expansion into its third city in Thailand after Bangkok and Sri Racha. The 300-unit Citadines North Pattaya will appeal to corporate travellers from the nearby major industrial estates for automobile, shipping and metal companies while visitors who enjoy Pattaya’s bustling nightlife options will appreciate the prime location of the 150-unit

Citadines Central Pattaya. The 95unit Citadines Jomtien Beach Pattaya will host expatriates working at the nearby industrial estate in Rayong as well as leisure travellers at the popular Jomtien beach. In the luxury resort and residential area, the 150-unit Somerset Wong Amat Beach Pattaya will cater to corporate guests on extended stay and travellers with families looking for exclusivity and tranquillity, offering a nice sea view from the serviced residence.

Youth Focus Social Learning is Vitally Important in Schools

by Gordon Yates

There are many relevant theories on education and how children learn. Many of the theorists that have been studied include Piaget, Bruner and Erikson. The theorist that I will be concentrating on in this article is the social theorist Vygotsky. The reason for concentrating on this theorist is that Vygotsky included the social environment in which the student is immersed as a means by which the student learns. Lev Vygotsksy lived for the first half of the 20th century in the USSR. As a psychologist, he studied social interaction as a major determinant of human development. Children are surrounded by social interaction. They are constantly in contact with parents, teachers, siblings, peers, friends and other members of the community. Parents and teachers are important because they read to them, explain points and hold conversations. Friends and peers also encourage conversation and discussion. Learning commences in the social world. Children learn language and ways of thinking from other people. Children can form schemata (Piaget) from what other people have said into dialogue once they have assimilated and made sense of what the other person has said. It is in the assimilation of new knowledge into the existing schemata that children learn new material. Vygotsky posited that there is an imbalance occurring

when they cannot naturally assimilate the new knowledge into their existing schemata or knowledge base. Vygotsksy came up with the term ‘zone of proximal development’ to indicate the boundary area where on one side, children can cope independently with particular knowledge and skills but beyond that boundary, the children need adult assistance. What this means in practice is that children can cope with new learning if they can assimilate it into what they already know. Different students assimilate knowledge in different ways. This can be shown by Garner’s multiple intelligence theory: some students learn new material by reading, writing, yet others by using physical media such as art materials or music. If the student cannot assimilate the new knowledge by themselves, then adult assistance is required. The adults could include the parents of the child, other family members or even the teachers in the school at which the student is undertaking formal learning. This has an important application in how the teacher

teaches the material that should be covered in the curriculum. The teacher may introduce new learning material and the students can accomplish the associated tasks of the new learning material, if they are given adult (teacher) assistance to get them past the zone of proximal development. In practice, the teachers should provide instruction at a level just above the student’s independent level of functioning but not too high to make the learning frustrating for the student. Teachers should teach the next step in a learning scheme based on what the students already know. As an example, let’s look at teaching a new concept in mathematics. Perhaps the students already have knowledge of how to multiply three-digit numbers with two-digit numbers. A credible next step the teacher can introduce would be to include multiplying threedigit number multiplications to two-digit multiplication with decimal numbers introduced. If the students know methodologies on how to multiply integers together, then the multiplication of

numbers with decimals would be the logical next step. This ties in with the concept of scaffolded learning. The teacher provides initial support in the student’s efforts to solve a new problem or master a new skill. Gradually, the student can become more confident in their ability to solve the new skill and would be able to do the task more independently. The key here is that a human or adult is available to provide the scaffolding. This has implications for why schooling is vitally important to the learning of a child. In today’s world, where students have unprecedented access to computer technology and a wealth of reading materials available, students will always require human contact in order to fully engage and learn new material. Schools filled with people will always be relevant in the future. Gordon Yates is the Middle School Mathematics teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Vietnam Visit for GIS Student Leaders by Praw Brander

Four Prefects from Garden International School have attended a special student leaders' conference in Vietnam. The Prefects – Aakshi, Yukta, Berenice and Praw – went to the 2015 FOBISIA Student Leadership Conference hosted by the British International School (BIS) Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. FOBISIA is the Federation of British International Schools in Asia. It proved to be an awesome experience, with inspiring guest speakers, participation in collaborative activities – and great food. And yes, we were tired at the end of it all, but we were also full of great leadership initiatives ready to be shared with GIS students. On September 17, the GIS group travelled to Ho Chi Minh City and stayed at the 4-star Hotel Equatorial. More than 10 international schools around Asia came to the conference. The two-day conference allowed everyone to explore the role of ethical leadership and it was

a good opportunity for the students to share information about their schools’ leadership systems and discuss the challenges and opportunities as student leaders. Students also had the chance to gain a taste of Ho Chi Minh City on the Friday evening when we visited the AO show

at the Saigon Opera House; the show is based on the traditional lives of the Vietnamese people. After the show, we had dinner at Nha Hang Ngon. We were very sad to be leaving Vietnam the next day but we were excited to be coming back with lots of ideas to improve our school.

Top in Thailand! by Mark Beales

Jun Beom Arjit Two students from Garden International School (GIS) have been recognised by Cambridge International Examinations for their outstanding IGCSE results. Arjit Verma was named as Top in Thailand for three subjects: Coordinated Science, Geography and World Literature. In total Arjit was awarded 9 IGCSEs, all with A*s. For every subject, Arjit scored more than 90 percent. What is particularly impressive is that Arjit’s awards come in three different areas: Literature, Humanities and Science. Meanwhile, Jun Beom Chi was given Top in Thailand for IGCSE Music. What is even more remarkable is that his sister, Sarah, gained the same Top in Thailand award for

IGCSE Music two years ago. Sarah went on to gain 41 points for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which put her in the top three percent of students in the world. She is now studying at the worldfamous UCLA in the USA. When Jun Beom came to GIS from Korea in Year 6 he had almost no English, but through his hard work and the efforts of teachers, he soon dramatically improved. IGCSE Coordinator Mr Stokes said, “This is an incredible achievement for both students. It demonstrates the incredible talents and dedication of our students – and the hard work put in by teachers to achieve this level of academic excellence across a range of subjects.” Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

You & Your Pets How to ‘Treat’ your best friend Pet shops, supermarkets and other retailers in and around Pattaya offer a wide variety of tasty treats for cats and dogs. And while most may be tasty, not all are treats. In the same way that it’s a good idea to check package labels before buying human food, it’s important to be aware of the contents of pet treats. Don’t simply accept marketing slogans such as "healthy," "natural," "premium," and so forth. Read the label and evaluate the list of ingredients. If it isn’t on the package or if it is written in a language you do not read (let’s say Thai, for example), research the product online. In general, avoid anything containing milk and milk products, onions, garlic, and excessive sodium, sugar, fat, grains, and raw meat, eggs and bones. If your pet enjoys consuming a small amount of people food as a treat and she handles it well, the following can be safe: l Carrot sticks l Cucumber slices l Zucchini slices l Apple slices (without seeds) l Cooked lean meats l Baked potatoes (no unripe potatoes or potato plants) l Bread (no raisin bread, no uncooked bread dough) l Unsalted pretzels l Bananas l Unsalted almonds l Plain, cooked pasta

When feeding treats to your dog or cat, make sure to cut them into easily chewable pieces. Also, treats should be given in moderation, usually making up no more than 5 to10 percent of a pet’s daily caloric intake. The rest of the calories are best furnished from high-quality, nutritionally- complete pet foods intended specifically for your pet's life stage and lifestyle. Never give your pets grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, avocado, yeast dough, caffeine, alcohol or chocolate. Remember too, the treat your cat or dog probably likes best is time with you. Making time daily to play with your pet helps them bond with you, keeps them fit, and averts boredom. So drag string, throw a ball, and give them what they're hungry for: lots of praise and love from you.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. This handsome ginger boy came to us with his lookalike sister "Posh" who has already found a loving new home. He is a very playful and friendly chap who is a little shy with strangers at first, but once he gets to know you he will give you lots of purrs and cuddles.

Precious

This lovely young cat had a bad start to her life when she was hit by a car. She has spinal damage and cannot walk. She can however scoot around quite easily but only on a nice tiled floor so that her legs are safe from damage. Her new owner will have to change her nappy four times a day but has no other special needs.

Oscar

This handsome boy was rescued from Central Pattaya: he had pneumonia and cat flu but made a full recovery. Sadly he has also tested positive for both FIV and FeLV so will have to be an indoor boy and cannot mix with other cats. Oscar is not sick and is expected to live a normal life with regular check-ups.

You’re probably aware of family health measures, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions.

Skipping Flea Medicine If you skip your pets' flea medicine they aren't the only ones who may pay the price. Fleas will quickly set up shop on untreated pets, particularly at this time of year, and fill your house with their eggs and young. Some people wind up covered in itchy sores. Fleas can also transmit serious diseases to people including bubonic plague. Ask your vet about long-term flea medication and put a routine reminder on your calendar.

Ginger Nutz

This happy, healthy-looking, big ginger boy has been with us for what seems to be ages. Sadly he is such a big boy now he is not usually on the normal "shopping list" of the average adopter who may choose his younger friends before him. Shy when first meeting you, he quickly makes friends with anyone willing to spend a few minutes with him.

Cat Corner Tip Cats May Love Too Much

While many parts of Europe and North America consider the black cat a sign of bad luck, in Great Britain and Australia, black cats are considered lucky.

Going to the Dogs...

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made. ~ M. Acklam

Behavior experts confirm that some cats really do experience separation anxiety when apart from a favorite person — and that's one reason a sweet kitty may pee on your clothes when you're at work. Other signs: the cat paces, vocalizes, or blocks the owner's path to the door. Left alone, she may vomit or be too worried to eat. For cats who love too much, behavior therapy can help — along with anti-anxiety medications for severely affected cats.

Our Community Hilton Pattaya supports community and environmental program Hilton Pattaya in cooperation with the international non-governmental organization World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) implemented the Zero Waste Project in Noen Tang Rod Fai district, Pattaya by supporting the community with containers and biological inoculum for making EM (effective microorganism) liquid. Hilton Pattaya’s Director of Human Resources Montree Sattham said, “We are so glad to be a part of this project and to help support the community. We are supporting and providing advice on very simple actions about recycling from wet waste (biodegradable), which aims to address waste management in the area by working with the community to collect and manage their household

wastes. And we believe this EM liquid will support sustainable practices in farming, improve composting

operations, efficiency of wastewater treatment plants in the community.” “Our goal is to build more environmentally conscious society and to show how the profit can be generated from this waste; less of it will be thrown away, thereby reducing pressure on the city’s waste management system.” Photo shows Montree Sattham (4th from left), director of Human Resources of Hilton Pattaya, and Pattaya City Council member Rattanachai Suttidechanai (6th from left) together with the community leaders and hotel’s blue energy team.

Billabong Golf Bar donates to Khao Bi Sri As happens every day at the Billabong Golf Bar Bob Philp has a few cold beers with friends that pop in for a chat about golf, rugby or cricket, but on this occasion the conversation turned to Scott Qua and his daughter, Kelly, and how it would be a good idea to have a charity golf day to support children with special needs. We have all heard the saying ‘oak trees from acorns grow’, well a similar situation occurred on June 30 for what started as a casual conversation turned into a huge success with more than 550,000 baht being raised. Thanks must go to the 132 golfers that supported this event but a special thanks to the sponsors who were so generous in their support. The winners of the golf were

Andrew Scaiffe and Charlie Brown but the real winners were the children with special needs. Situated along the 331 close to the junction with the 332, Khao Bi Sri Centre is a home for children from the age of 6 that have various ailments which include autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and learning difficulties generally. Boonchu Muangmaitong (Khun Chu) has run the centre from the outset and has dedicated her life to helping children with learning difficulties teaching them to read, write, use computers and to develop their artistic skills. Some time ago, she was so frustrated with the lack of help from the Education Authority that she gave a rai of land to

them on the understanding that it was to be used for the welfare of the children. Many of these children need 24/7 care and attention and the demand for help from families that have a child with special needs, is such that expansion has been a necessity. Jesters Care For Kids, the Thai Navy, PTT and others have assisted in this aim and she now has 140 children with 100 being resident. When you meet one of these children, you will find them friendly, loving and unafraid to have close contact with those they meet. It is indeed a pleasure to spend time with them. The children have very few personal items but what they have are guarded and treasured at all times. When we spoke to Khun Chu about what was

needed, her reply was simple, lockers for the children to use to keep their personal items safe and in one place to give them a sense of independence. A simple request which was readily agreed to by the Billabong committee. The 30 lockers are in bright, cheerful colours and the individuals name will be on each one. Khao Bi Sri is just one area of concern for us and further donations will be made shortly but plans are already underway for next year’s event so if you would like to sponsor a hole, make a contribution of cash, clothes, toys at any time or perhaps an appropriate item that could be auctioned on the day, contact Bob Philp at the Billabong on 082 204 3411 or William Macey on 086 152 2754.

Local Sports Thongchai Jaidee triumphs at the RACE REPORT first Porsche European Open Disappointment for Stuvik in Sochi Thongchai Jaidee is the first winner of the Porsche European Open in Bad Griesbach, Germany. Top of the leaderboard at the start of the day, the Thai kept his nerves in the neck-and-neck race to card a round of 67 and finish 17 under par and one shot better than Englishman Graeme Storm. Bernhard Maier, Porsche AG Board Member Sales and Marketing, presented the winner’s trophy to the delighted victor who will be taking home 333,330 euro prize money after

securing his first win on this year’s European Tour. “Apart from the weather, I love Germany,” said Jaidee who

went on to thank his German coach Peter Wolfenstetter. The Bavarian has been working with the Thai for the last 12

years and was at his side all week. “I was nevertheless very nervous before the final putt,” admitted the winner.

PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society Round 7 of the GP3 Series took place at the modern Sochi circuit, close to the Sochi Olympic Park that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, in Russia on October 9-11. Sandy, as usual, races for Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand. Qualifying: Sandy – 18th 1:56.976 / Ocon – 1st 1:53.921

The GP3 qualifying took place on a damp and drying track on Saturday morning, Stuvik ran too long on his first set of tires and could not make the most of his second set. "It was a bad session, I should've changed tires earlier but I missed the radio call from my engineer due to some radio interference at the time," said the Thai driver.

With a full bus we headed north out of Pattaya and arrived at Bangpra Golf Course 43 minutes later where we found it to be quite busy. With a later tee time of 10:42 am, it gave us plenty of time to have a practice putt and other preparation and with overcast skies and fairly humid conditions our first of three groups teed

However, the organisation then rescheduled for two races on Sunday morning. Stuvik got a good start but failed to make use of the first lap and fell back the field, after an eventful race he finished 16th. "Just couldn't make use of that first lap and it put me on the back foot for the rest of the race," said Sandy. Race 2: Sandy – 17th / Eriksson – 1st After almost a carbon copy of Race 1, Sandy again did not get to grips with the circuit and couldn't use the first lap to his advantage. "This was probably one of my worst races ever, now we're working hard to improve for Bahrain where I will give everything to be back in the points." The next race will take place at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain on November 19-21.

The greens did not seem to be affected however and were their usual slick self, so three putts were plentiful for many golfers. The going was slow at first with some other society in front of us but it seemed to quicken up as the round went on and we completed our enjoyable, rainfree round in 4 hours and 25 minutes. With two golfers scoring 35 points, a countback was necessary which saw Mike Allidi (18-point back nine) finish in first place from your writer Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (17-point back nine) in second spot and big Steve Truelove was third with 32 points. Our first scheduled tee time was 9:30 am and our first group hit off a couple of minutes before that on a humid morning with very little wind. The golf course was wet in parts so it was preferred lies on the fairways and first cut and there were many instances of deeply plugged balls but at least we were playing golf! The greens were in very good shape however, although a touch slow, but all in all everyone got around with no major problems and the average time for the round was a little over four hours. We had two flights with A flight for handicaps 0 to 19 and B flight for golfers with handicaps of 20 to 36 and there were five places in each flight. There were also technical prizes for both flights on 12 of the holes. Dipty Narongsak was the winner of A flight with 38 points and with six golfers on 36 points it meant a countback for the remaining four places. Mike Allidi (19-point back nine, 13 points on the last 6 holes and 7 points on the last 3 holes) finished in second place from Dave Edwards (19-point back nine, 13 points on the last 6 holes and 5 points on the

Campbell Smith (18-point back nine and 13 points on the last 6 holes) came fourth and Jack Grindvold (18-point back nine and 12 points on the last 6 holes) finished in fifth place. Colin Davis (17-point back nine and 14 points on the last 6 holes) and Bob Watson (17-point back nine and 11 points on the last 6 holes) just missed out. With by far the best score of the day it was Bent Larsen who easily won the B flight with a magnificent 44 points and John Tallett was second on 37 points with Barry Elphick third having 34 points. Another countback was needed to decide fourth and fifth place with two golfers on 33 points; it was Larry Gibb (17-point back nine) who grabbed fourth spot from Tony Cook (15-point back nine) in fifth place. Local Sports Three Amigos play with one coming up “Cross Trumps”! by James Olsen Two buses left The Growling Swan a little earlier than the scheduled 8:30 am departure time and all golfers were keen as ever to get to The Plantation Course (Pattavia) as it is a favorite of The Growling Swan golfers. As buses were full, Brad Todd and Peter Grey travelled up the highway with JJ Harney; reports are that the land speed record was shattered. The trip generally takes an hour to an hour and ten, their trip 40 to 45 minutes. Not to be out done, I believe that the trip home was a quicker journey as Mario Andretty was determined to beat the first bus back that left 25 minutes prior to the car. The weather was as good as one could hope for at this time of the year with over cast skies keeping the temperatures cool, but there was always the

threat of rain. We got through dry with the rain falling as the last group hit the showers. The course was in good nick as usual with the greens true but quite fast and tricky. Just ask Dobbsy as he found out on the 2nd green! Three putts were not uncommon on the day. Dick Warberg shows his winning smile at Pattana

Greetings, golfers. This Friday the Tropical Golfers treated themselves to a visit to Pattana golf course. Not that expensive of a treat because coupons made this course reasonably affordable, but we don't get to play there enough. It was drizzling with dark skies as the hopefuls met for coffee and breakfast, and a couple of little faith decided to cancel for fear of the weather. Mistake. Pattana is a first-class venue all around. Locker rooms, staff, and certainly the golf course are all excellent. Despite overcast skies and a slight 10-minute drizzle that

Please contact Paul Rennison on 084 345 4005 if you wish to partake. The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is about 400 baht, so great value for a day out!

It was all very close, but when the counting was done Dick Warberg (hcp 19) sneaked into first place with a respectable 34 points on a multi-step countback. It’s good to see the organizer get something back for his efforts. Ted Morris (15) took second place honors also with 34 points. Rounding out the announcements was John Pierrel (13) with 33 points. A good time was had by all.

I think everyone agrees that it is great to have Phoenix back on board and with free carts on Tuesdays it makes for quite the bargain. A few clouds were about but the forecast looked good so off we went with our 24 lads on board to tackle the Mountain and Ocean links. A bit of a disappointment to find both practice putting greens closed for renovations. I guess this is something we will have to deal with as they go ahead with these course improvements that in time should make this track one of the best around. I hear the Lake nine is right on schedule and will be open at the end of the year so that certainly is some good news. It’s like that motorway sign “Temporary Inconvenience, Permanent Improvement”. A trio stood on the smallest step of

a crowded podium as Robbie Taylor, Peter Rogers and Al Marumoto all turned in respectable cards of net 72 for joint third place. Al is already heading back to Hawaii, so see you in a few months buddy! The next step higher found Rod Black on his own with a net 70 for sole second place, just one shot out. Best score went to TGC partner John McHugh who, after eight years of trying, has finally bagged his first monthly medal and Antigua golf shirt! Johnny has come so close so many times that he actually does deserve this win. After two weeks of grueling golf in Scotland where he turned in many cards over 90, a handicap of 14 was his number for this outing. After a mediocre first nine, McHugh bounced back with a couple of “as seen on TV” style birdies to dominate the receptive back nine. On in two on the par-5, 18th hole, McHugh just missed his eagle putt for an easy tap in birdie to finish the day. It must be nice to get back home and not have to play in 30 mph wind conditions. How To Rebuild Trust In A Marriage (After It’s Been Damaged)

by Karen Burns, www.UrbaneWomen.com

When you get married, you are giving your heart to another person, trusting that he is going to take care of it. We have the expectation that our spouse will always be the one person we can rely on. That’s why it’s so devastating when a partner lies, breaks promises, or cheats. But trust that has been broken can be rebuilt. It can be difficult, but if you still love him – and if you both want to save your marriage – these five steps can help make it work: 1. Have Patience

The top 10 most competitive economies A failure to embrace long-term structural reforms that boost productivity and free up entrepreneurial talent is harming the global economy’s ability to improve living standards, solve persistently high unemployment and generate adequate resilience for future economic downturns, according to The Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016. The report is an annual assessment of the factors driving productivity and prosperity in 140 countries. The 12 factors that drive competitiveness are: institutions, infrastructure, macroeconomic environment, health and primary education, higher education and training, goods market efficiency, labour market efficiency, financial market development, technological readiness, market size, business sophistication, and innovation. This year’s edition found a correlation between highly competitive countries and those that have either withstood the global economic crisis or made a swift recovery from it. The failure, particularly by emerging markets, to improve competitiveness since the recession suggests future shocks to the global economy could have deep and protracted consequences. The report’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) also finds a close link between competitiveness and an economy’s ability to nurture, attract, leverage and support talent. The top-ranking countries all fare well in this regard. But in many countries, too few people have access to high-quality education and training, and labour markets are not flexible enough.

3. Be Who You Promised To Be Your marriage vows promise to be there “for better, for worse” – well, this is one of the “for worse” parts it was talking about. You made the commitment to stick with your spouse through all the ups and downs, and not to quit when things got hard. It can be tempting to feel that your spouse has not kept up their side of the bargain by whatever they did that broke your confidence in them, but it does no good to either of you for you to hold on to your resentment. 4. Be Honest With Each Other Both partners need to admit that there is an issue if you want to start rebuilding trust. You can’t fix it if you don’t admit that it’s broken! Both partners need to be completely honest about what happened, what their actions were that led to the issue and what their feelings about it are. While it can be difficult to talk about, getting it all out in the open is often the most healing step.

Regaining your trust isn’t something that will happen overnight, especially if the transgression is particularly serious. It may only take a few days or a week to get over a small lie, especially if it’s something that hasn’t happened before. But an affair can take months or years to completely recover from. Both partners need to have patience and give the process time to happen. 2. Understand You Aren’t The First To Go Through This Even the happiest looking marriages can have trust issues, and many of them have survived whatever it is that you’re going through. There are sure to be books written from the point of view of others who have dealt with the same trust issue you are. You may want to join a support group for people with unfaithful spouses, or even go to a counselor who can help walk you through the steps of rebuilding trust.

5. Avoid Placing Blame First place in the GCI rankings, for the seventh consecutive year, goes to Switzerland. Its strong performance in all 12 pillars of the index explains its remarkable resilience throughout the crisis and subsequent shocks. Singapore remains in 2nd place and the United States 3rd. Germany improves by one place to 4th and the Netherlands returns to the 5th place it held three years ago. Japan (6th) and Hong Kong SAR (7th) follow, both stable. Finland falls to 8th place – its lowest position ever – followed by Sweden (9th). The United Kingdom rounds up the top 10 of the most competitive economies in the world.

It’s perfectly natural to hold on to your hurt and anger; and it can be very hard not to throw it back in your spouse’s face every time an argument or disagreement arises. But each time you do, it rips the scab off the pain and slows down the healing. Statements like “I told you so” do nothing to help build trust; in fact, they do the opposite. It’s a prideful statement that belittles your spouse and does not foster healing. Be consistent in your actions, do the best you can to forgive, even if you can’t forget. Truly forgiving is the real secret to rebuilding your trust. For additional information on romance, health, fitness, beauty, skin care, hair care and more, go to www.urbanewomen.com.

Among emerging and developing Asian economies, the competitiveness trends are mostly positive, despite the many challenges and profound intra-regional disparities. While China and most of the Southeast Asian countries performing well, the South Asian countries and Mongolia (104th) continue to lag behind. The five largest members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – Malaysia (18th, up two), Thailand (32nd, down one), Indonesia (37th, down three), the Philippines (47th, up five) and Vietnam (56th, up 12) – all rank in the top half of the overall GCI rankings.
