Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting n a few weeks in Hamilton delegates to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting will be gathering in a conference room with their voting cards in hand. As is with any convention there is the opportunity to network but, on this day there is a more pressing issue. It’s the reason they’ve come from all corners of the country. The delegates to the Chamber Convention are Chief Executive Officers, Presidents and Chairs of the Board, policy analysts and communication officers, and all are concerned with improving the climate for business. The Chamber network is often referred to as the “Voice of Business”, and the loudest

voice the delegates have is a vote on policies presented during the three day meeting. Policies that will go through vigorous debate to ensure they are clear and strong and speak well for the business community. The policy resolutions deal with the Environment and Natural Resources, Finance and Taxation, Industry, International Trade and Transportation. Some examples: • Under the Environment and Natural Resources umbrella is a policy encouraging the federal government to continue to work toward an integrated approach to managing waste and recyclables. The resolution offers seven recommendations including working with the provinces and municipalities to eliminate duplication of regulations that add unnecessary administrative costs to a business, to continue to support Canadian businesses that are making an effort to develop and implement recycling technologies and waste minimization tactics and to educate the consumer on these efforts.
• Delegates will also be asked to vote on a policy dealing with the Canada-US relationship. The policy details the need for a new direction in the wake of the economic downturn, a delay in the Keystone Pipeline, border tightening, and “Buy America” policies. • There are also a number of policies dealing with copyright and intellectual property, improving transportation corridors and infrastructure. So on the weekend of September 23rd, delegates to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce convention will be voting on policy with an eye to improving the business of doing business… some call it: “The Parliament of Business” – just one of the reasons Policy Matters.

Last month, Winston Bromley of Artbox made it easy to see why Pinterest should be used by all entrepreneurs as a way to drive traffic to their websites and grow their business. We saw many regular faces there, along with sponsored students from Trent University and Fleming College. YPG has a few new projects in the pipeline and one focus will be to work more closely with local government and institutions to affect change within the city of Peterborough. First: Before you start any design Plan — short and long-term goals/how are you going to reach your clients; Budget — set aside a percentage of your annual revenue; Who – always check to see who your ideal target market is; Cost – know what each of your marketing strategies from your Plan will cost. Secondly: Top 10 tips 1. Too Much Information – Limit your content to the necessities, and simplify. 2. Bad Clip Art – Not recommended for businesses, but ok for school projects. 3. Bad Fonts – Stay away from fonts that will make your marketing material sloppy. 4. Too Many Fonts – Choose only 2-3 fonts, otherwise it’s just too confusing. 5. Poor Paper – Use a print service who will use quality paper, the home inkjet/copy paper doesn’t show professionalism. 6. Date Sensitive – If you are printing sales material, only print the quantity you need (you can always print more). If you have deadlines, leave time for the ad to run, and stop running them when they are expired. 7. Blatant Grammatical/Spelling errors: Check & double check, and/or have someone else check it too. 8. Lack of “White Space” – You don’t have to fill the page. Leave some room between the elements (text/images) to breathe.
9. Low Resolution Photos – Google is not an image bank. Purchase the proper images with the quality suitable for printing, and remember there are copyright laws. 10. This year’s BAH/YPG Summer Social was hosted by the Silver Bean Café. Owners, Michael and Andrea VanDerHerberg are celebrating their 10th year in business as one of Peterborough’s summertime coffee hotspots. They hosted a full-house, serving lots of delicious food sponsored by the New Canadians Centre and catered by Le Petite Bar and Trent Conference Services. The New Canadians Centre’s goal is to attract, hire and retain foreign workers. The spacious layout and ample patio chairs and tables allowed for a lot of networking, and the casual and relaxed atmosphere that the Silver Bean provides made for a very welcoming atmosphere, especially so for our new Chamber members. Jef Dueck and Stuart Harrison encouraged all members to either nominate their own business or nominate another business for the upcoming Excellence Awards. There are 18 categories, including The Business Citizen of the Year, and all Finalists receive wide-spread recognition! PCs Propose Amendments to WSIB
Canadian Chamber Welcomes Detroit-Windsor Bridge Announcement
On May 8, 2012, Ontario PC Labour Critic Randy Hillier introduced Bill 87 to amend the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 and allow an employer, at any time, to choose an alternate insurance plan provided by a privatesector insurer. Bill 87, Workplace Safety and Insurance Amendment Act (Alternate Insurance Plans), 2012 would also repeal Bill 119, which requires mandatory Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage in the construction industry for independent operators, sole proprietors, partnerships, and executive officers, starting January 1, 2013. If the newly proposed Bill 87 is passed, insurance coverage for those categories of persons in the construction industry reverts to being optional.
The Ontario Chamber of Commerce has voiced concerns with mandatory coverage for independent operators and executive officers surrounding the potential creation of further financial burdens on small business operators. Bill 87 was carried at the first reading on May 8th, 2012. What OHIP Covers When We’re Travelling Outside of Ontario I recently heard about a retired couple from Ontario who required to be transported by helicopter to a hospital, after a serious car accident while they were vacationing in British Columbia. Due to the fact that they were nonresidents of that province, and didn’t purchase Emergency Medical Travel Insurance for their trip, they were personally responsible for the $25,000 air ambulance bill. What a nightmare! I can’t remember who mentioned the story to me and I didn’t read the article myself, but the fact is ambulance and transportation services to hospitals are not covered by OHIP when we are anywhere in the world outside of Ontario. There is a cost for us in Ontario too, but it is considerably subsidized by the province. I wonder how many people actually know this? If you go to the Ontario Ministry of Health’s website you will find that all provinces and territories participate in a federal-provincial reciprocal hospital billing agreement to enable insured residents of Canada to receive insured outpatient and inpatient hospital services in publicly-funded hospitals. Reimbursement is based on OHIP rates, or the amount billed if it’s less, and that the OHIP rate may be less than the amount charged. With the exception of renal dialysis services, OHIP does not cover payments to private hospitals and facilities within Canada. Services provided by Chiropractors, Optometrists, Podiatrists, Osteopaths and Quebec physicians are not covered. Additional services that are not covered include experimental treatments for research or study, cosmetic surgery, home care, prescription drugs and, as mentioned above, ambulance services. When travelling outside of Canada OHIP will pay a maximum of: $50 (Canadian) for all emergency outpatient services on any one day, $200 per day for inpatient services, $400 per day for emergency inpatient hospital treatment and $210 per day for outpatient dialysis services. Treatments and services must be for emergencies, be medically necessary, performed at a licensed hospital and or health facility, be rendered in relation to an illness, disease, condition or injury that is acute and unexpected, which have arose outside of Canada and requires immediate treatment. OHIP’s provisions are intended and designed to provide a very limited amount of funding for out-of-province/country medical treatment, and their website strongly and repeatedly advises its readers to purchase additional and adequate health insurance every time we leave Ontario. And as my office is contacted at least once per year by clients who have been hospitalized in a foreign country because they have suffered an unforeseen illness, I can only agree that travelling without the proper coverage may be the biggest gamble we could ever take.
