Summer 2022

As we move into spring, the sunlight is stronger, the wind not quite as cold, and the days are growing longer. Spring will be in fits and starts for a while, but slowly and surely, winter’s grip is loosening. Even with the promise of spring, the world still feels shaky. Turn on any news channel and you are likely to hear about COVID, soaring inflation, and geopolitical upheaval. For as much as we are a singular human race, at times we feel deeply fractured. Yet, as I have transitioned into my role of Town Supervisor, I have seen so much good, especially right here in Penfield. I am grateful to my colleagues on the Town Board, at the Town Hall, and in the community for the warm welcome and assistance during the transition. It is now time to get to work in moving Penfield forward. One of the most critical elements of this work includes the need for a long-term facilities plan. Over the years, our Town has been fortunate to experience continued growth while many areas in the state have seen declining populations. With the growth, our Town facilities have not kept pace. We recognize our facilities, including the Department of Public Works, Justice Courts, Recreation (including senior programs), and the Penfield Public Library need improvements. As a resident of Penfield, you may or may not use the Library or the Justice Courts, and maybe you haven’t participated in our wonderful Rec programs. However, I can assure you the Department of Public Works plays a critical role in the daily lives of all residents. It is the backbone of our Town. For example, if the roads are plowed, if the road drains after a rainstorm, if our Town parks are open - that is the result of hard work from the Department of Public Works. Moving forward, we must examine ways to optimize operating efficiency while ensuring residents have access to outstanding services and facilities. Initial planning efforts are underway, and I eagerly anticipate continuing this conversation with the public in the coming months. I mentioned in previous Town communications that the question, “Where can we improve?” must always be asked. I’ve continued asking this question and have received a wealth of feedback. To that end, we have made some immediate changes and are planning for more in the months ahead. Our reception window in the Town Hall is now staffed during most hours of the day, and visitors are welcomed by a Town Hall employee. We continue to look at the customer experience for visitors and ways to improve. Stay tuned. We have increased our communications tools and are rolling out an e-newsletter. You can sign up to receive the e-newsletter on our website, www.penfield.org. Look for more new tools as the year rolls on. Exciting times are certainly ahead for our Town, and I am honored to play a small role in the successes of this community. As always, please reach out should you have any questions or concerns.

Letterboxing is an intriguing “treasure hunt”-style outdoor activity. Letterboxers hide small, weatherproof boxes in publicly accessible places (like parks) and post clues to finding the box online on one of several websites. There are about 90,000 active letterboxes hidden in North America alone. Individual letterboxes usually contain a logbook, an often hand-carved rubber stamp, and occasionally contain an ink pad. Finders make an imprint of the letterbox’s stamp on their personal logbook and leave an imprint of their personal stamp on the letterbox’s logbook. Come learn about this fun, creative sport and we will create one together as well as visit the online websites that put letterboxing at your fingertips. You will be able to put your skills to the test this summer by attending one or all of the three Letterbox picnics we have planned. See Friday classes for details.

War of 1812 in our Own Backyard Tour

OUR VAN TRIP POLICY HAS CHANGED. REGISTRATION WILL BE DONE ON A LOTTERY SYSTEM.

Letchworth State Park and the Glen Iris Inn Time Van leaves at 10:00AM

Fee $22

We are looking to visit this beautiful park this spring. Lunch at the historic Glen Iris Inn and then a stop at The William Pryor Letchworth Museum which serves as a door into the fascinating history of Letchworth Park and a tribute to the efforts of Mr. Letchworth to preserve that past for all to share and enjoy. Our drive will include a few stops to view the gorge and then on to the Abbey of the Genesee to visit the Monk’s Bread Bakery before heading home. Fee does not include lunch.

Rediscover the Genesee River Act # Day Date 369410-A Fri Jul 8

Time Van leaves PCC at 9:30AM

Fee $15

The water cures have a long history in New York dating back to the mid-1800s. Opened in 1850, the Clifton Springs Water Cure started out as a collection of wooden buildings where patients received revitalizing sulphur baths and holistic care. The dedicated Dr. Foster visited his patients every day and inquired as to their symptoms and illness progress. Our DEAR adventure will take us to the Foster Cottage where we will be guided through the historic home and learn more about the early spas that were cultivated. Lunch at Warfield’s restaurant will follow our tour. Fee does not include lunch.

DEAR ADVENTURES Act # Day Date 169410-C Fri May 20

Time Leave PCC at 10:30 AM

Act # Day Date 369410-C Fri Aug 19

Time Fee Leave PCC $30 at 9:00 AM Return approximately 5:00 PM

Join John Schmeelk on this historic ride to the local sites that were part of the War of 1812. The name of the war is deceiving as it lasted more than just one year (three to be correct) and Lake Ontario is one of the waterways involved in the conflict. There are stories to hear and history to learn as John narrates the confrontations and crusades of the second war with Great Britain. Box lunch provided.

Fee $30

Rochester’s successful development was dependent on our river in so many ways. Let’s rediscover this important waterway once again. Starting at Genesee Valley Park and heading north, we will cross most of the bridges, maybe even twice, and catch glimpses of the pedestrian only bridges, all the way to Lake Ontario at Charlotte and we will stop for a view at High Falls. Along the way, Doris will talk about historic things we’ll be passing and see the grand views of the downtown skyline as well as new projects to promote the river. Morning refreshments and box lunch provided. Join us for this adventure.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PROGRAMS CAN BE CANCELLED FOR UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. We do our best to notify DEAR participants in a timely manner. Our primary form of communication is an e-mail. If you do not have e-mail please notify the recreation office prior to the program starting so we know to alert you by phone if there are any changes in the class. Penfield Recreation | 585-340-8655
