Fall 2022

Hello everyone, I hope you’ve enjoyed the summer and have been able to take in the nice weather. In all honesty, I look forward to autumn as the air cools and the days begin to grow shorter. Despite the seasonal change, our Recreation Department remains very busy, and continues to add new programs to meet the needs of Penfield residents of all ages from our youngest to our oldest. To that point, and as you have probably noticed, Penfield continues to experience growth. With an increasing population, we must ensure Town services and facilities keep pace. We are working hard to expand our services not just at the Recreation Department, but throughout the Town to serve our community. Along with expanding services, we also recognize the need to enhance our Town facilities. Many of our facilities, including the Department of Public Works, Community Center, and Public Library, were built to serve a population of approximately 30,000 - some 10,000 fewer residents than our current population of almost 40,000! Most current facilities were of similar size in the mid-1980s when the Penfield population stood at roughly 28,000. While we continue to seek ways to get creative and maximize existing spaces, we must look to the future and examine ways to expand our facilities to meet the needs of residents. Chief among our needs is additional space for our DPW and Community Center. The DPW was built some 50 years ago when much of the present-day equipment needed for its jobs did not exist. The current facility lacks space to house critical and costly equipment, including its plows, and does not provide sufficient space to repair equipment. And, over at the Community Center, limited and aging space does not adequately allow us to operate our program offerings. It also inhibits our ability to introduce additional programming for our senior citizens and our youth. In the coming months, we’ll be having a conversation with the community about ways to improve facilities to better align with the current size of Penfield. Any future projects will of course be guided by a fiscally responsible approach with the best interests of residents in mind. I welcome your feedback on how we might begin the conversation on the future of Town facilities. Please do not hesitate to contact me, and I look forward to speaking with you! Happy autumn,

Marie Cinti Town Supervisor

Penfield Players

SPOTLIGHT ON

The Penfield Players are very busy this fall. Our first show in the fall will be The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa FastHorse and directed by Jacqueline Moe. It will be presented as part of the Rochester Fringe Festival on Sunday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Multi Use Community Cultural Center (MUCCC) at 142 Atlantic Avenue. A comedy with a timely message, The Thanksgiving Play is a thought-provoking satire “ripped from the headlines.” Join three well-meaning white teachers, and the “professional actor” they’ve hired as a consultant, as they try to put together a “politically correct” elementary school play about the “first Thanksgiving.” Whose perspective is missing? Is “wokeness” enough to pull this off? Or will their blind spots be their undoing? Tickets are on sale at RochesterFringe.com. Our fall main stage production at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Rd., will be Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring. Directed by Jean Gordon Ryon, this play is a classic farce. Dramatists Play Service describes the show this way: “Drama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him! Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police—not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage—it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic black comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family. It all adds up to a fun, funny, and fast-paced evening of theatre.

Sunday, November 6. Tickets will go on sale online at www.penfieldrec.org and in person or by phone (585-3408655) through the Penfield Recreation office at Penfield Community Center the week of October 3. Tickets are $17 at the door; $14 in advance; and $12 for groups of ten or more. We will follow all Covid protocols in effect at the time of performance for each of the venues in which we perform. For more information about our shows, including audition dates and times for Arsenic and Old Lace, please see our website, www.penfieldplayers.org, follow us on Facebook, or e-mail penfieldplayers@gmail.com.

Performance dates for Arsenic and Old Lace are October 28 through November 12, 2022, with a matinee performance on

The course is primarily based upon a book by Ward Farnsworth, entitled The Practicing Stoic: A Philosophical User’s Manual. The teachings contained in this wonderful book are directed to the problems faced by human beings many hundreds of years ago; and they are just as relevant to the problems humans face today as they were when they were initially promulgated. Much has changed in the last 2,000 years, but human nature has not.

Our economy is enormous, but we only see tiny pieces of it. Just the simple question, “how much is a dollar worth?” has no exact answer. In some areas of the world, a dollar could be half a day’s wages, but now individual wealth is often measured in billions of dollars and governments and large corporations manage trillions. Prices are changing, value is shifting, and it is hard to find information which is not attempting to sell you something. In May 2012, the DEAR program conducted four sessions to allow our community a chance to make sense of the 2007-10 subprime mortgage crisis. We revisit this honest conversation-- a look back at what our constantly changing world has redefined about what we do and do not know about money—and try to understand how the old money rules have changed. This is a focused look at ancient and recent monetary history. No participants will be allowed to introduce investment products. November 14th: What is Money? Art Through the Ages Act # 466410-D

How many times have you visited an art museum and bypassed the ancient art exhibits because your knowledge of their importance and how they connect to our modern-day ideas of art escape you? Each week we will look at the many facets of art through time, culturally, politically, aesthetically and historically. Each style conveys a message to the viewers that help us document and understand the human experience. We will begin the journey in Egypt for a fascinating overview of the artistic conventions that have transcended time, surviving as the very foundation of the modern art world of today.

We do our best to notify DEAR participants in a timely manner. Our primary form of communication is an e-mail. If you do not have e-mail please notify the Recreation office prior to the program starting so we know to alert you by phone if there are any changes in the class. Fall 2022

DEAR Tuesdays This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

Musicals, More or Less Al Biles

The movie musical is a genre that brings to mind Astaire/Rogers, Gene Kelly, and Judy Garland in feel-good movies like Top Hat, Singin’ in the Rain, and Meet in St. Louis. However, there also are films that are musical without being musicals in the traditional sense, and that is the focus of this series. From backstage musicals to rock movies, with stops in jazz-opera and under-represented artists, we’ll sample musicals, more or less.

Twenty years after A Hard Day’s Night, this quintessential mockumentary sends up rock movies so subtly that many viewers wondered why they’d never heard of the title band. With largely improvised dialog, hilariously pretentious tunes, and totally deadpanned delivery, Rob Reiner’s directorial debut has become a true classic. “These go to 11.”

All that Jazz (1979) Act # 466411-K

Day Tue

Backstage musical about, and of, the Great Depression, featuring Busby Berkeley’s over-the-top production numbers, spicy pre-code situations and images, and a great ensemble cast including Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler and pre-Astaire Ginger Rogers. What sets it apart from its contemporaries is how it incorporates the realities of the Depression into an otherwise giddy musical. “We’re in the money!”

In a fitting backstage bookend to Gold Diggers, Roy Scheider stars as Joe Gideon, a thinly veiled incarnation of director Bob Fosse. The script is not only autobiographical but actually prescient, and Fosse pulls no punches in portraying his ego-driven creative process. Stunning musical sequences, superb dancing, and a no-holds-barred portrayal of how a musical is made. “It’s showtime, folks!”

Originally intended as a quirky exploitation film to capitalize on the rapid release of its soundtrack album in the US, the Beatles’ first film became one of the most influential movies of all time. The Fab Four are delightful (they actually bow to the applause), and the fast-paced script is loaded with Easter eggs, both in the dialog and in the numerous cameos. Still fresh and charming after nearly 60 years. “Isn’t he clean...”

This semester we will show 12 of the 24 lectures in this series and continue the program in January of 2023. Al Biles Act # 466412-G

Day Wed

Date Sep 21-Oct 5

Musician and professor Al Biles continues to share his love for jazz with 3 more installments of Jazzed about Jazz. This series will focus on 3 trumpet players with contrasting styles from the mid-century modern period. Chet Baker quickly became the icon of cool in the early 1950s with Gerry Mulligan’s quartet and had a long, if troubled, solo career. Lee Morgan was the quintessential hard bop soloist, both with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and with his own groups. Booker Little was a brilliant modernist whose writing and arranging skills matched his innovative improvisational style. Session 1: Chet Baker

With James Dean looks and a sound to die for, Chet Baker exploded on the jazz scene in the early 1950s with Gerry Mulligan’s piano-less quartet. One of the most accessible jazz improvisers, Baker epitomized cool understatement, both on trumpet and with his laidback vocals. His wonderful late-career recordings marked a triumphal return after years of drug addiction. Session 2: Lee Morgan

A precocious debut with Dizzy Gillespie’s big band put Lee Morgan on the map as an assertively talented trumpeter, and stints with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers led to his establishment as a defining voice of hard bop. Morgan’s breakthrough, however, was a funky hit for Blue Note Records called The Sidewinder, which became the anthem for Gillette razor blade ads, of all things. Morgan’s “dirty” trumpet style, which features his distinctive half-valve technique, is instantly recognizable and memorable. Session 3: Booker Little

In representative democracies, gerrymandering is the political manipulation of electoral district boundaries with the intent of creating undue advantage for a party, group, or socio-economic class within the constituency. John will explain the process and discuss the implications of this strategic and legal act.

Archaeology – An Introduction to the World’s Greatest Sites – The Great Courses

In his all-too-brief career Booker Little leveraged a degree from the Chicago Conservatory to make a profound impact on jazz improvisation, both with Max Roach and Eric Dolphy, and also in his own groups. His writing and arranging were equally innovative, and he was poised to emerge as a modernist star of the first magnitude, when his life was cut short by uremia at the age of 23.
