It is hard to believe fall is already here and I have been Penfield’s Recreation Director now for 6 months. It has definitely been a challenging, educational and rewarding few months. I would like to thank the Recreation staff and the Town Board for their assistance and continued support. As in so many other aspects of life, the key to running a successful department is having the ability to strike a balance between young and old, tradition and innovation, and the needs of one versus the needs of many. Keeping this in mind, the Recreation staff continually strives to honor the past while embracing the challenges of the future. It is our job to serve an entire community while maintaining meaningful connections with individual participants.

Penfield Recreation Master Plan Needs Assessment Update One of the Recreation Department’s current goals is to update the Recreation Master Plan, and we are asking for your input. The Master Plan committee and the Recreation staff have developed a Needs Assessment Survey that will provide valuable information as the Master Plan is being updated. The Needs Assessment is a great opportunity to involve current and future program participants in the planning process! Check the Town web site (www.penfield.org) for information on how and where to complete the survey. We will have an electronic version as well as hard copies available. As we continue to “map” our future, the Needs Assessment will be a critical tool in our decision making process. Thank you for being involved in deciding what the Penfield Recreation Department offers to the community!

Supervisor’s Message - Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor As you are reading this message many of our college students are back at school, and those heading to elementary, junior high and high school are not far behind; I wish all of our students the best for an enjoyable and successful 2012-2013 school year! Speaking of success, our summer programs saw some of the highest participation in years. Whether you attended the special events at Penfield Amphitheater & Kiwanis Stage, joined in on one of the many aquatic swimming or diving programs, or just stayed cool by engaging in one of the specialty camps, activities or Daytime Education at Recreation (DEAR) programs, there was something for everyone. And let’s not forget our wonderful Penfield Library—the staff continues to grow and expand programming to add an exciting and fun dimension to reading and learning.

paper from the landfills. More than 15 tons of electronics were recycled and 8 tons of confidential paper was shredded and recycled. Lastly, Earth Day activities saw several hundred residents come out to clean up the Town parks, roadsides and ditches. More than 1,500 pounds of debris was collected and properly disposed of in an effort to help keep Penfield looking good for everyone.

As we head into the fall season many are thinking about football, hunting, wine tours and more. For me, fall means I am in the process of working with all the department heads on the 2013 budget. The goal of your town board is to maintain financial wellness for our taxpayers by cutting costs and controlling spending. We continue to be faced with several unfunded mandates that add many challenges to the budget process including rising health care costs and workers compensation insurances, pension increases, and fewer revenue sources. Our goal continues to be maintaining fiscal Penfield Recreation Director Chris Bilow responsibility while minimizing impact to has assembled a group of staff and residents programs and services. to begin updating the Parks & Recreation Master Plan. can be seen in operations spread throughout town. Stop in and purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Not only does your business support your farmer friends and neighbors, it helps all of us to eat high quality healthy foods. In addition to our local businesses, we have many other community partners who make a difference each and every day to help make Penfield one of mostly highly sought after communities in the county and region. They include all of the service organizations, faith community, Penfield Library, senior living facilities, group homes, fire, police and EMS, and our two school districts. As we head into the new school year, one of our school partners will change; I would like to take an opportunity to recognize Superintendent John Carlevatti of the Penfield School District who retired at the end of July. On behalf of the entire town board and town staff, I want to thank John for being such a great community partner. Over the last two and a half years I have had an opportunity to work with John on several matters of school and town interest and have found him to be a visionary who worked to make the school district and the community better for all our residents…congratulations and best wishes, John! I want to acknowledge your town board members Andy Moore, Paula Metzler, Linda Kohl and Rob Quinn for their energy, vision and commitment to the Penfield community. All four were born, raised, educated and have lived in Penfield all their lives. I am fortunate to call these individuals friends; they have all had influence on me and how I perform my job to help support all of you. Lastly, I would like to recognize and thank our entire town staff for everything they do each and every day to support and serve our residents. Local government has seen a lot of change over the past several years. While I believe local government is the most efficient and effective level of government, we have been more aggressive with asking employees to do more with less, and I will say the Penfield team has stepped up and made that happen in all aspects of our operations. Great job team, your efforts do not go unrecognized…thank you!

The Life and Times of Mary Surratt

Mary Surratt, the first and only woman ever hanged in this country for being found guilty in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. She and three others were hanged and several were sent to jail for conspiracy. Interesting enough, she was tried in a military court with many people coming to her defense, including two clergymen. This talk will include several facts about her involvement and you can decide for yourself whether she was guilty or unjustly accused for her involvement in this heinous act.

Elizabeth Van Lew The Union Spy Born into a prominent Richmond family, Elizabeth Van Lew returned from her schooling in Philadelphia as an adamant abolitionist determined to fight slavery in the bastion of the South. “Slave power,” she wrote in her diary, “is arrogant, is jealous and intrusive, is cruel, is despotic.” General Grant admitted that Elizabeth had succeeded in securing some of the most valuable and useful information from the south during the four year war, making her contributions to the Union cause one of the most significant. Come hear about her extraordinary story and the audacious undertakings she bravely faced to help the Union cause. Susan Berardi will present an exceptional rendering of this remarkable woman’s life. 11/8 Ticket - Free lecture only Ticket - $6.00 - Lunch/Lecture

Mark Twain and the Civil War

“I was a soldier two weeks in the beginning of the war, and was hunted like a rat the whole time.” Mark Twain. While Mark Twain was famously a novelist, lecturer, reporter, and river-boat pilot, few are aware he was a confederate soldier. Despite the fact he published Ulysses S. Grant’s brilliant autobiography, Twain called the Civil War “a blot on our history, but not as great a blot as the buying and selling of negro souls.” With the publication of his own autobiography 100 years after his death, Mark Twain became the only author to publish new best selling volumes in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Sometimes light and humourous, sometimes serious and profound, this lecture will look at what Mark Twain added to the conversation about the Civil War and its aftermath. 11/29 Ticket - Free lecture only Ticket - $6.00 - Lunch/Lecture Rosemary Irwin

Why Good People Do Bad Things

Social scientists have found that genocides and ethnic mass murders are not carried out primarily by career criminals or sociopaths, but rather by “ordinary” groups of people who fit a general profile of the population. NEW! “Meet Opps” Frequently Asked Questions: What is a Meet Opp? A Meet Opp is an opportunity to gather with a group of people who share the same interests. The Meet-Opps are initially facilitated by one or more individuals who would like to meet up with others who may have the same fascination with a specific topic.

Do you have to have any prior knowledge or experience in the topic to attend a Meet Opp? No. We encourage novice curiosity seekers to attend and learn something new.

Why would I want to attend a Meet Opp? This is a great way to meet other people who have the same interests as you. It is also an opportunity to share and learn from others in the group.

What goes on in a typical Meet Opp? The initial meeting will be facilitated by a pre-selected individual who will generally bring some form of presentation to help kick off a discussion. This could be as elaborate as a PowerPoint show or as simple as a shoebox of collectibles. Participants are also welcome to bring their own objects, stories and experiences to share if they are so inclined.

Why are you introducing Meet Opps to the community? We are encouraging Meet Opp groups to engage in their own program planning such as arranging speakers, workshops, off site and on-site activities that could potentially be interesting to the general public. Ultimately it is our hope that these passionate and enthusiastic participants can help us direct future programming for the ever changing Recreational landscape.

Making Sense of the Civil War Presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities & American Library Association

Breakfast and Tea with the Humanities - Facilitator: Rosemary Irwin

Something special happens when we talk about what we read with others in our community. Text becomes a catalyst for civic engagement and cultural understanding, as well as for personal reflection. The Council invites New Yorkers to meet Walt Whitman’s call for active reading by participating in one of our reading and discussion programs for adults. Reading and discussion programs make time for thinking deeply about one thing, over time, from a variety of perspectives. While no readings are required to participate in discussions, participants will have an opportunity to collect copies of short readings pertinent to each session and two books—March by Geraldine Brooks and Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson—will provide the framework for the first and fourth discussions respectively. Readings are a departure point. Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas and experiences to share.

9/12 Imagining the Civil War - Reading: March by Geraldine Brooks, Louisa May Alcott’s Civil War journal ex-

cerpts. The novel March by Geraldine Brooks, turns the familiar world of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott upside down by tracing the imagined untold story of Reverend March, father of Jo and family, and his experiences amidst the battles of the Civil War. This session will also examine Alcott’s journal of her experiences as a Union army nurse. Early registration begins 8/29. #443663-A

1:00 PM

Afternoon tea and discussion: Free

9/28 Choosing Sides - Reading: selections from America’s War by Edward Ayers

Deciding the true reasons behind and the purpose of the Civil War was as much a battle as any military action. This discussion session will look at first hand accounts from Frederick Douglass, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln and others. Participants will also explore Rochester’s special historical connection to Civil War history, covering famous plots in the Mt. Hope Cemetery and the expansive George Eastman House collection of Civil War photography. # 443663-B # 443663-C

10:00 AM Discussion only: Free 9:30 AM Breakfast & discussion: $5.00

10/19 Making Sense of Shiloh - Reading: selections from America’s War by Edward Ayers

Historically, the battle of Shiloh proved that the Civil War would not end quickly or easily. Yet this influential battle has never stopped changing our country’s vision of itself. Firsthand accounts of the Civil War battle of Shiloh by Ambrose Bierce and Ulysses S. Grant were unflinching reports which revolutionized American autobiography. Shelby Foote’s breakthrough Shiloh: A Novel drew upon first hand accounts from both sides to create a vision of the two worlds of the soldiers from North and South. Bobbie Anne Mason’s short story Shiloh uses the battlefield as the backdrop for the changing roles of men and women in American society. This discussion will center on what Shiloh means to us today. # 443663-D # 443663-E

10:00 AM 9:30 AM

Discussion only: Free Breakfast & discussion: $5.00

11/16 The Shape of War - Reading: Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson

The Civil War was the deadliest war in our country’s history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 750,000 soldiers. It was also one of the world’s first industrial wars, utilizing technologies such as the telegraph, steamships, mass produced, more efficient weaponry and trench warfare. To this day, the Civil War battle of Antietam is the bloodiest, most harrowing in American history. Using James McPherson’s study of Antietam as a departure point, this discussion will focus on the realities in the battlefield for Civil War soldiers and how Antietam was the beginning of the end of the Civil War and one of the seminal moments in United States history. # 443663-F # 443663-G

10:00 AM 9:30 AM

12/7

War & Freedom - Reading: America’s War by Edward Ayers Starting with a close reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, this class will look at the Civil War’s fulfillment of the Declaration of Independence’s promise “all men are created equal.” Emancipation was not a single event but a long and uneven series of struggles on plantations and farms, in cities and towns, all across the country. From the exceptional courage and valor of the first African-American soldiers to real life stories recounted in Margaret Walker’s novel Jubilee, this last discussion will examine the impact of the uncompensated emancipation of four million people who had been held in slavery for over two centuries. # 443663-H # 443663-I

10:00 AM 9:30 AM

Discussion only: Free Breakfast & discussion: $5.00

Please note that there is a minimum and maximum number for this program. Please register early to ensure participation. You do not need to attend all five sessions to participate. An optional breakfast prior to the discussion will be available for $5 except the 9/12 program. Copies for the suggested readings will be available at the Penfield Public Library. Copies are limited. of Rochester Shilling

Sometimes reading directly from stories from his own personal writings published through Arcadia Publishing, Mr. Shilling will share a wealth of information about his research and study of Rochester’s rich history with artifacts, photos, newspaper clippings and sometimes slides.

How Rochester Got Its Statue of Mercury

Rochester’s Architects

Rochester’s Bicycle Craze

The Mercury statue, a landmark of downtown Rochester, was created in 1881 by J. Guernsey Mitchell. It has outlasted the original building it was designed for and relocated to its current location above Lawyers Cooperative Building (now West Thomson Company). Come hear about how and why the statue was conceived and how it disappeared for 22 years before once again adorning the Rochester skyline.

Rochester has its share of interesting and effective architecture from the Gray Lady Powers Building, to the Chamber of Commerce, the Times Square Building, Reynolds Arcade Building, and the First Universalist Church - all designed by some pretty extraordinary characters in the field of architecture. Mr. Shilling will talk about some of these esoteric designers such as Claude Bragdon, J. Foster Warner, Thomas Boyd, Jr., Andrew Jackson Warner and their contributions to the Rochester landscape.

The bicycle seemed to surface in the Rochester area around 1880. It was the most popular means of transportation here in our city as well as across the United States well into the first years of the new century. In 1895 a visiting editor from Bicycle World magazine said, according to the Rochester Union and Advertiser, “I think Rochester, New York, is the greatest bicycle town in the country. A stranger visiting the city would think the whole place moved on wheels.” What made our city so bicycle enthusiastic and who were the pioneers who created the frenzy of the time?

The Remarkable Kate Gleason

Eastman’s Silverscreen and the Artwork of Batiste Madalena

Kate Gleason, born in Rochester on November 25, 1865, was the first female member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Concrete Institute. She was also the first woman to serve as president of a national bank. A savvy business woman, philanthropist and suffragette, she helped shape the world of international business and helped carve a path for women in the world of engineering. She never married, believing, rightfully so, that a husband would only hold her back from her work in business. Come hear more about this incredible woman whose story for the time is as remarkable as the woman who lived it. #442030-B 10/10 W - 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Penfield Community Center Fee: $5.00

A gift from George Eastman to the Rochester community, the Eastman Theater was originally built to expose the Rochester audience to beautiful classical music by having a live orchestra accompany the silent films of the era. A great concept that was successful until talking pictures arrived. Mr. Shilling once again has some great stories to share about the era of the silent film, like the unbelievable recovery of original film posters painted by local artist of the time Batiste Madalena. Mr. Eastman disliked the publicity materials created by the movie studios and persuaded 22 year old Madalena to remain in Rochester to create original posters for his theatre. Madalena’s surviving pieces are now sought after pieces of art and have been exhibited at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art, Hershek and Adler Galleries and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
