Francis Marion University is a member of the 13-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference. Other PBC members include Armstrong Atlantic State University (Savannah, Ga.), Augusta State University (Augusta, Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.), Flagler College (St. Augustine, Fla.), Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, Ga.), Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.), UNC Pembroke, North Georgia College & State University (Dahlonega, Ga.), and USC Aiken.

Headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 12 sports, six for men and six for women. The PBC has worked tirelessly to become one of the elite conferences in NCAA Division II, and is now entering its 20th season with 28 national championships and 25 national finalists. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first commissioner from 1991 to 2007. 2009-10 OUTLOOK

Patriot Women say “Feel the Heat” in 2009-10 With four returning starters from a Sweet Sixteen squad and a team that led the nation in scoring each of the past two years, the Francis Marion University women’s basketball team has adopted the slogan “Feel the Heat” for the 2009-10 campaign that begins on Nov. 15.

“Shannon has picked up where she left off last season, and is in the best physical shape of her career. She is more comfortable in the ‘go-to’ player role.” Her modest scoring average led a very balanced scoring attack last season that saw six players average over 9.9 ppg.

FMU, 27-5 last season, just missed out on earning a preseason national ranking by one point in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Patriots ended last year ranked 14th nationally after winning their second consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship and making a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

“This is the deepest, most talented team I have had in my time at Francis Marion,” said third-year FMU head coach Heather Macy. “By far, this is the best defensive squad we have assembled – having improved through all five positions. We are also better at rebounding. With all the new faces trying to mesh together, we are still working on the offensive part of the game, but that explosion will happen at some point in the season once everyone becomes ingrained in our system.”

The returning starters include 5-10 junior guard Robin Colbert (6.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg 3.2 apg), 5-8 senior guard Shana Franks (12.8 ppg), 6-0 junior center Danelle Downs (4.2 ppg 4.1 rpg), and 5-10 junior swing player Shannon Singleton-Bates (13.0 ppg 5.1 rpg). Singleton-Bates was an AllConference and honorable-mention All-American selection last year.

Also returning is 5-5 senior guard Eboni Fields who came off the bench last year to average 9.9 ppg and connected on 35.8 percent of her three-point attempts.

Seven new faces join the roster: 510 senior forward Nicole Mealing (transfer from Augusta State Univ.), 5-10 senior forward Precious Tucker (High Point), 5-6 senior guard Tiffany Wilson (Monroe Community College), 5-5 junior guard Monica Mann (Georgia State), 5-10 sophomore forward Simone Trice (Georgia Tech), and 5-8 freshmen guards Courtney Mealing (Strom Thurmond High School) and Kristen Dickerson (Heathwood Hall Episcopal School).

The Mealings are sisters, and Nicole averaged 14 ppg and 6.9 rpg last season at ASU, including a 28-point, 22rebound game in a 93-90 loss to Francis Marion last January.

Courtney Mealing was named the 2009 South Carolina Class AA Player of the Year after averaging 29.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 4.2 steals per game.

“I have been very pleased with the leadership of our returnees, especially Robin, who attended an NCAA Leadership Conference last summer.

“The new players have embraced our philosophy. Dawn can score and rebound, and once she gets in the flow after basically missing two seasons, I expect good things from her. I love the way Courtney and Nicole have shot the ball in the preseason. Simone and Precious have both been animals on the boards.

Monica is an exciting addition at the point. After rehabbing from an ACL injury, she will get her first game action in the opener on Sunday.”

“We have never been picked to win the Peach Belt in my three seasons, but we hope to again surprise folks and challenge for the title. We have beefed up our non-conference schedule, including the two road exhibitions we played at UNC (loss) and Winthrop (win). It is also nice to open the regular season with seven straight home games.” The Patriots, 14-1 at home last season, have won 143 of their last 182 home contests in the Smith University Center. “We are very excited to get to play in the Carolina’s Challenge at Myrtle Beach on December 20, and appear on the same bill as UNC, USC, and Coastal Carolina.”

2009-10 HEAD COACH

HEATHER MACY 3rd year at FMU

Heather Macy is preparing for her third season as the head coach for women's basketball at Francis Marion University. Her two-year coaching record at Francis Marion is 48-14 and her four-year career mark is 88-34.

This past year (2008-09), she directed the Patriots to a 27-5 record, a No. 14 national ranking, a secondstraight Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship, and a second consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance where the team advanced to the round of Sweet Sixteen. Also for the second year in a row, Francis Marion led Division II in scoring offense (88.1 ppg) and steals per game (19.4). It marked the third time in three seasons that a Macy coached team led the nation in scoring offense. She also earned conference Coach of the Year honors for a third straight season (twice in the Peach Belt).

In her first year (2007-08), she guided Francis Marion to a 21-9 record after inheriting a 6-22 squad.

The 21-9 mark equaled the largest won-loss turn-around in NCAA Division II last year, and the eighth-best ever.

The Patriots captured a share of the PBC regular-season title and earned a bid to the national tournament, where the program served as the host for the South Atlantic Regional. FMU led the nation in scoring offense (89.3 ppg) and steals per game (18.5 per game).

Macy was named to head the program on March 21, 2007, and became the 10th head coach in the storied history of the FMU program, and the youngest new coach since Sherri Tynes took over the coaching reigns as a 27-year-old in 1988.

The Hamptonville, N.C., native came to Francis Marion after two seasons as head coach at Pfeiffer University. In 2006-07, she took the Falcons to a 26-5 record, the CVAC regular-season and tournament championships, and an appearance in the Division II national tournament. The team's record represented the fourth-best turnaround in Division II. She was named the CVAC Coach of the Year, and her squad led the nation in scoring (83.0 ppg).

In her first season at Pfeiffer, her squad went 14-15 after she inherited only four returnees from an 8-20 squad. Her Pfeiffer team represented the United States in the Barbados vs.

Her coaching resume also includes stints as an assistant at two Division I institutions, University of Maryland-Baltimore County and High Point University, and a pair of Division II schools, Lenoir-Rhyne College and Catawba College. In her six seasons as an assistant, her teams' combined records were 84-60.

She served as head coach for a USA Athletes International squad that toured Australia in 2004 and won a gold medal with a 7-0 mark at the Australian Youth Games.

She is founder of the highly-successful Focused 50 Basketball Camp, which is now held at FMU. She was a featured speaker at the 2008 South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association clinic in North Charleston, will speak at the 2009 Triad Coaches Clinic in Winston-Salem, N.C., and has been invited to speak at the NIKE Coaching Clinic in Myrtle Beach in April 2010. She also holds an annual coaches clinic at FMU in October.

Macy received a B.S. degree in sport and exercise studies (cum laude) from Greensboro College, where she was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball court.

She ended her career 11th on The Pride's career scoring list (707 points) and in the top 10 for assists (207). In 2002, she earned a master's degree in human performance and recreation from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Upon her graduation, she quickly moved into the coaching ranks, accepting the position at Catawba.

From the Coach......................

Over the summer, I visited one of our biggest supporter’s beach home. As I walked into the dining room area I noticed a huge jigsaw puzzle that was only half way completed. The first thought that popped into my mind was how complicated it looked. It was so intricate and it obviously took an incredible amount of patience and poise to connect each piece so perfectly. The pieces were so tiny and most of them looked the same. It would have been easy to say that this jigsaw was too hard to put together and could have been left in a box on a shelf. However, our supporter later explained to me how it was a work in progress and that her son works on it each time he comes to visit. He is patient and diligent, and that is what it takes to put together a complicated puzzle. To start, all of the pieces were scattered on the table, but once the first two pieces were interlocked, we were able to build on those two as our foundation. Just when you think one little piece may be so insignificant, you find that it fits into a spot you have been stuck on for a while.

The more our conversation progressed, the more I couldn’t help but think about the group of players we were in the process of forming. Our puzzle was somewhat connected, as we had seven key returning players that I felt were the foundation of our puzzle. These key pieces understand winning, understand work ethic, and understand the FMU Way. Now, the question is, could the eight new faces be willing and ready to add to the inner workings of our puzzle? To do this they must train harder than they have ever trained and commit themselves to being a part of something greater than themselves.

I really feel our season is a work in progress and we need to be persistent in putting the pieces of our puzzle together to form a whole. You need to keep at it and don't turn away when you are stuck. We need to outwork everyone when we don’t know where to put one of the puzzle pieces.

We still have some unanswered questions, but I know for sure that all of the pieces of our puzzle are here. I wake up every day with that puzzle on my mind. I see it all meshing together. I know that one day our puzzle will be whole. When that day comes, I will know that we were patient, worked diligently, and connected each part carefully to build this puzzle.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Tiffany Tucker , 1st Year at FMU Tiffany D. Tucker enters her first season on the Francis Marion University bench as an assistant coach. Her primary responsibilities with the Patriots will include recruiting, onfloor coaching, individual player workouts, and pre- and post-season workouts.

Tucker comes to Francis Marion after one season as an assistant coach at Division I Radford University.

The Petersburg, Va., native is a 2006 graduate of the University of North Carolina, where she earned a B.A. degree in sports and business ethics. She played four seasons on Lady Tar Heels basketball team for former FMU head coach Sylvia Hatchell. She was a member of two Atlantic Coast Conference championship squads in 2004 and 2005, and her teams went to the NCAA Tournament all four years, including a 2004 trip to the Sweet Sixteen and a 2005 appearance in the Elite Eight.

During her playing career, the 6-5 Tucker was awarded the UNC Coaches Award twice, in 2002 and 2004. She was also the first recipient of the UNC at Chapel Hill Osterneck Award for Inspiration after recovering from a serious knee injury suffered during her freshman season. While at UNC, Tucker served as a camp counselor and post development coach at the Sylvia Hatchell Basketball Camp, and later filled the capacity of Assistant Director of Summer Camps for the same summer event.

Prior to coaching at Radford, she spent one season as an assistant at Allegheny College. Following her playing career, she served one year as an assistant varsity coach at Carrboro (N.C.) High School. She attended the 2009 WBCA Convention, as well as the 2009 Villa 7 event.

She is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches and Administrators Association. She recently graduated from the National Association for Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators/ Higher Education Resource Services (NACWAA/HERS) Institute. Off the basketball court, she has experience working as a mental health counselor and a child care counselor.

Carol Sciaretta , 2nd Year at FMU Carol Schnepp Sciaretta of Conway begins her second season as an assistant coach with the Francis Marion University women’s basketball program. Her primary responsibilities include recruiting, on-floor coaching, individual player workouts, pre- and postseason workouts, and helping in the area of academic support for team members.

During her first year (2008-09) at Francis Marion, the Patriots posted a 27-5 record, earned a No. 14 national ranking, led the nation in scoring offense, captured the Peach Belt Conference regular-season title, and advanced to the round of Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA II Tournament.

Sciaretta came to FMU from Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa., where she served as an assistant coach for three seasons. She aided in the rebuilding process for a program that plays in a very tough NCAA Division III conference. The Knights posted a three-year record of 29-46.

While coaching, she also earned her master’s degree (M.Ed. and Elementary Education certification) from Arcadia in 2007. She also administered the honors math program (grades 4-8) at the Blue Ribbon School of St. Genevieve School for the 2007-08 academic year.

She is a 2003 graduate of The Catholic University of America, where she earned a B.A. degree in business (marketing). A four-year starter on the basketball team, she ended her playing career as the school’s third-leading all-time scorer with 1,404 points. She twice earned All-Capitol Athletic Conference recognition, was a four-time All-CAC Academic Team honoree, and served as the Cardinals’ team captain for two seasons.

Sciaretta previously coached in the Oreland (Pa.) Basketball Summer (Youth) League and has taken part in the Buzz Braman Offensive Skills Camp in Columbia, Md. 7

She is believed to be the only collegiate cage coach to win national championships under three different affiliations (AIAW, NAIA, NCAA). She is a member of the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame, and has supported the university through her Sylvia Hatchell Francis Marion University Golf Challenge, held during the summer at the Country Club of South Carolina. In June 2004, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.

FMU HALL OF FAME CAGER PEARL MOORE (1975-79) Pearl Moore, women’s basketball’s all-time scoring leader, is a 1979 Francis Marion University graduate. Moore, a native of Florence and a graduate of Wilson High School, played for the Patriots between 1975 and 1979, and the four-time All-American scored 4,061 career points.

Moore started her collegiate career at Anderson Junior College in the fall of 1975. After one semester at Anderson (eight games and 177 points), she transferred to Francis Marion. Fortunately, the Patriots did not open their cage season until after the first of the year, and thus Moore played the entire 1975-76 Francis Marion schedule. At that time under Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) rules, a player could transfer and be eligible immediately. The 5-7 guard-forward went on to score 3,884 points in a Patriot uniform. Her career point total includes the points scored at Anderson, because at that time in women’s basketball, two- and four-year schools regularly competed against each other and all results counted.

During her junior year, she scored a then single-game record 60 points in a 114-71 victory over Eastern Washington State College in the 1978 AIAW Small College National Tournament (see lower left photo).

In her final collegiate game, March 10, 1979, an AIAW Small College Regional Tournament consolation game against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she tallied 42 points to break the previous all-time record of 4,045 set by Travis Grant of Kentucky State University.

Moore averaged 30.6 points per game over her four seasons (127 games) at Francis Marion, and helped lead head coach Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell’s program to an 85-42 record and three national tournament appearances. She scored below 20 points only 18 times in her Francis Marion career, and reached the 50-point mark on three occasions. She scored 1,109 points in her junior year alone. In addition to her point total, recorded in an era that did not have the three-point field goal, Moore grabbed 1,270 rebounds and shot 45.9 percent from the field and a then school-record 70.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Since that time, two male players (John Pierce and Philip Hutcheson, both of David Lipscomb University) have surpassed her total, but she still stands as the only female player to reach 4,000 career points. Miriam Walker-Samuels of Claflin College (SC) is second on the women’s scoring list with 3,855 points.

Following her career at Francis Marion, Pearl went on to play two seasons in the Women’s Pro Basketball League (1979-80 with the New York Stars and 1980-81 with the St. Louis Streak), earning All-Star status in 1981, and one season in Venezuela.

Moore was one of the first inductees into the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1994, she was nominated by the university for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and her name remains in the nomination process. During the summer of 1996, several items from Pearl’s playing days were sent to the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., for inclusion in the Women’s Basketball Exhibit Area. In 2000, she was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2008 became a member of the Florence Area Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2004, she was nominated for induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.

This camp was designed especially for players who strive to become better. During camp, we stress development-player development and personal development. Our hope is that each camper will leave the Focused 50 with a better understanding of the game and realize the intense work ethic that it takes to compete at the highest level. FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Where the Swamp Fox Lives.................

Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, prides itself on providing a strong liberal arts education.

Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for using the South Carolina terrain to outfox the British, the University enrolls more than 4,000 students. The University offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select number of graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businesses and industries of the Pee Dee region. Francis Marion is the only state university serving the Pee Dee region, and many of its students are the first in their families to go to college.

The campus features modern classroom buildings, laboratories and residence facilities to provide a safe, comfortable learning environment for students. The campus also features a number of recreational facilities that are available for use by students, faculty, staff and alumni, and for use in intramural and intercollegiate athletic competition.

Most buildings have been constructed or renovated since 1970. Facilities are equipped with ramps, and those of more than one story are equipped with elevators. Though each building has its own unique design, all are planned for architectural harmony.

In addition to the Walter Douglas Smith University Center, which houses the gymnasium, raquetball courts, weightroom, and an olympic-sized swimming pool, other on campus athletic facilities include Clifford S. Cormell (baseball) Field, John Kassab (tennis) Courts, FMU Soccer Field, FMU Softball Field, a reslite eight-lane track, two natural grass intramural fields, and an outdoor recreational pool.

WHERE THEY PLAY (SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTER) FMU’S SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTER Named in honor of the university’s first president, Dr. Walter D. Smith, the Smith University Center provides comprehensive facilities for student services and activities as well as for recreation and athletic programs to serve students, faculty, and staff. Opened in 1974, the center’s gymnasium seats 3,027 for basketball and has recently undergone a renovation project. Improvements include a new hardwood floor, new scoreboards, a new lighting and sound system, and a new paint job.

The Patriot Women have compiled a 380-107 (.780) mark in the Smith University Center, including a 142-39 run in the past 181 games. The FMU men’s basketball team owns a 273-177 (.607) record in the building.

In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises. Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament, and in 1988, the U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team played an exhibition game against the Cuban National Team. In 1998, 1999, and 2008, FMU hosted the NCAA Division II women’s basketball South Atlantic Regional Tournament.

The Swamp Fox Club, formerly the Patriots Brigade, is the official booster club that generates support for the Francis Marion University Athletic Department. The mission is to provide full scholarship funding as established under NCAA guidelines for Francis Marion University’s intercollegiate athletic teams. The Swamp Fox Club offers memberships to both individuals and businesses. All money raised benefits every sport at FMU. Your support not only provides educational and athletic opportunities to worthy young people, but provides you valuable benefits as well.
