FMU is named in honor of South Carolina’s Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox,” for using the terrain to out-fox the British. Located about seven miles east of Florence, in the beautiful northeast section of South Carolina, the 400-acre campus is about 90 miles from the state capital of Columbia, 60 miles from the shores of Myrtle Beach, and 180 miles from the mountains of the Carolinas.

Francis Marion University placed 87 student athletes, including six women’s soccer players, on last year’s Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), more than half of all our student-athletes. Last year, nine women’s soccer players were named to the Fall 2015 Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll, and seven were named to the list for the 2016 spring semester. FMU has earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award 10 times in the past 13 years.

Francis Marion University 2016 Head Coach Lindsey Morgan - FMU Head Coach Lindsey Morgan begins her second year as head coach for the Francis Marion University women's soccer program. In her first season leading the Patriots, she exceeded the win total of the previous year and her squad nearly doubled the number of goals scored. That campaign (2015) saw FMU compete as an NCAA Division I independent, but for 2016 the Patriots will transition to Division II and the Peach Belt Conference. Morgan came to Florence after serving as lead assistant coach at Appalachian State University for four seasons, during which the Mountaineers won 32 matches. She also served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. In 2013, Appalachian State posted an 8-7-4 mark on the field and a 3.5 team grade point average in the classroom. Prior to joining the ASU staff, Morgan served as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University for the 2010 campaign. The Ladyjacks registered a 13-5-2 record and placed second in the Southland Conference. She is a graduate of Columbus State University, where she earned a B.A. degree in communication. She served as team captain of the Cougars’ squad for three seasons – all of which resulted in a Peach Belt Conference cham-The Morgan Identitypionship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. She helped CSU to the national quarterfinals in both 2007 and 2008, and her four-year playing record at CSU was 74-17-5. As a midfielder, her career totals consisted of 84 matches started, seven goals scored, and 20 assists. She was a NSCAA All-Region selection as a senior. She served as an assistant for CSU in 2009. That season, the Cougars went 16-3-3, again captured the PBC regularseason crown, were ranked as high as No.3 in NCAA Division II, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Morgan also has club coaching experience with the Columbus Futbol Club (Redstar) and the High Country Soccer Association. She holds a USSF Class C coaching license. Morgan is the fifth head coach in the program’s 21-year history, and the first female head coach. The Francis Marion women’s soccer program has an all-time record of 191-17017, including 12 seasons of double-figure wins and an imposing 111-44-7 home record. 2

FMU 2016 Women’s Soccer Pre-Season Outlook The Francis Marion University women’s soccer team will open its 2016 campaign on Thursday evening (Sept. 1) when the Patriots play at Pfeiffer University with a 5 p.m. kick-off. Second-year head coach Lindsey Morgan welcomes back eight letterwinners from last season as the Patriots begin their transition back to the Peach Belt Conference. This year’s slate will include a full PBC regular-season schedule, but FMU will not be eligible for the conference tournament. Francis Marion’s home opener will be Sunday (Sept. 4) against the University of Mount Olive at 1 p.m. on Hartzler Field in the Griffin Athletic Complex. General admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID). This year’s schedule includes eight home matches. In her first year, Morgan guided Francis Marion to a 4-15-0 record – a mark that surpassed the previous season’s win total. FMU nearly doubled its goals scored count by going from 17 in 2014 to 33 last year. Leading the returnees are senior midfielder Kelly Anthony and senior forward Tori Whigham. Anthony led the Patriots in scoring last season with six goals and seven assists, while Whigham tallied five goals and two assists. FMU must replace departed goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry who started all 71 matches over the past four years. Junior Casey Murakami leads a trio of players vying for playing time in goal. Murakami played in eight matches last year and posted a 3.01 goals against average. She will be joined by sophomore Janine Gordon and freshman Micahla Kitchen (West End, N.C.). The 2016 edition of the Patriots includes 10 newcomers: nine freshmen and one transfer. “I have seen improvement through our preseason and two exhibition games, especially in the areas of movement off the ball, keeping possession, and playing simple,” Morgan said. “Our young players are getting more accustomed to playing with each other, and are very focused at continuing to improve in that area. “It is a learning process with so much youth, but we have prioritized what we want to work on first and they have bought in to the process. Our motto is ‘one play at a time; one game at a time, and one day at a time.’ This group has so much potential.” The coach went on to say, “Kelly (Anthony) will be one of our leaders on the field. Her work ethic is great, as she came in as one of our most fit players, and she possesses a confidence that trickles down to the new and young players. She is encouraging and also has a ‘coaching voice’ on the field that the newer players hear, and they look up to her. Tori (Whigham) also has a good work ethic and a very positive attitude. “We will look for this pair of seniors as well as freshmen Carli Gauthier (Lutz, Fla.) and Avery Towns (Fairmont, W.Va.) as players who can put the ball in the net for us. Freshman 5-9 midfielder Amanda Eckard (Clayton, N.C.) gives us a scoring option off set pieces as does senior defender Allie Duckworth who can find the ball in the air.” Morgan pointed to freshman Emily Brommer (Angier, NC) as a newcomer that could contribute immediately in the midfield. “She is a true holding mid that disrupts play and stays composed when she picks off passes, thus making her able to make the simple pass.” Morgan’s picks to hold down the defensive backline include Duckworth, junior Melina Much, and freshman Sierra Cartano (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jessica Garnett (Rock Hill, S.C.). “Our keys to success will be to play the ball quickly and make sure we are connected as a unit on both sides of the ball. We need to play defense together from our attacking forwards to the backline. As we move forward to attack, we must play the simple ball, display constant movement, and switch the point of attack. We have a group of creative players, and I think we have the ability to score off set pieces.” Pfeiffer finished last season with an 8-9-2 mark that included a 5-5-1 record in Conference Carolinas play. FMU has won all eight previous meetings with the Falcons, but this will be the first match-up between the two programs since the 2002 season. The Patriot Women are 9-12-0 all-time in season openers. Francis Marion owns an all-time record of 191-170-17, including a 111-41-7 home 2016 Seniors mark.

Angela Salem

2013

2011

2010

Former Francis Marion University women’s soccer player Angela Salem recently ended her seventh season of professional soccer, and first (2016) with the Boston Breakers. She played the previous season (2015) with the Washington Spirit and three years (2012-14) with the Western New York Flash. In 2015, she appeared in 15 matches, including 12 starts as the Spirt reached the NWSL semifials. In 2014, she 2012 played in 23 of 24 matches (with 22 starts) and was third on the squad in minutes played. In 2013, she helped the Flash win its second straight championship: the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) title. She appeared in all 23 matches with 22 starts. In 2012, Salem appeared in all 16 season matches and recorded the deciding kick in the title match penalty-kick shootout as the Flash won the Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) Elite League championship. She has played in the Australian W-League for the Newcastle Jets. She played the 2011 season with the Atlanta Beat of the WPS, appearing in 11 matches, including nine starts. She played the 2010 season with Sky Blue FC, the franchise that won the 2009 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) championship. To that end, she visited the White House as President Barack Obama entertained the squad. Salem patrolled the midfield for FMU between 2006 and 2009. She appeared in 59 career matches scoring 11 goals and assisting on 27 scores. As a freshman, she tied the school’s single-season record for assists with 11. The Copley, Ohio, native was twice named the Patriots’ MVP. Following FMU’s 2009 fall season, Salem attended several tryout camps with professional organizations. She also finished the 2009 fall semester with a perfect 4.00 grade point average. Salem earned an invitation to the Sky Blue camp, made it through several cuts, and traveled with the team from the Bob Smith Soccer Academy in Robbinsville, N.J., to Florida for a two-week preseason training camp. When asked about her early pro experiences in 2010, Salem said, “This odyssey has been amazing because I have met so many awesome people. This includes people and players from different countries and from different national teams, and I have heard everyone's background stories. This experience means a lot to me because, other than myself, there is only one player here that comes from a small school. I am honored to even be here and be on the same field as these players, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to learn from them and to have made it through the tryout process this far." A 2010 graduate with a B.S. degree in psychology, Salem was named to the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll each of her four years, and was selected to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll four times. Hartzler Field Completed during the summer of 2012, the Murray G. Hartzler Soccer Field serves as the home facility for both the Francis Marion University men's and women's soccer programs. The field is situated in the new $11.1 million R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex located across the street from the main FMU campus. Hartzler Field is lighted with field dimensions of 120x75 yards and a capacity of 650 with a enclosed press box. The physical address is 4700 East Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29506. The facility is named for the current athletic director and former men's soccer coach. Hartzler also began the women's soccer program in 1995 and coiached that squad for eight seasons. The Patriot Women were 6-0-0 at home in the inaugural season of 2012 and are 10-17-0 all-time on the new pitch. The Patriots left behind the FMU Soccer Field, located behind the Smith University Center at the southern end of the campus, where the Patriot men posted an all-time home mark of 141-127-19 (.524) and the Patriot women a 101-27-7 (.774) record. Prior to building the FMU Soccer Field, the Patriot men’s team played its home matches on the university’s Cormell (baseball) Field, which at that time included an astroturf infield.

The Francis Marion University women’s soccer programs competed as NCAA Division I independents between 2005 and 2015. Prior to the 2005 season, the Patriot women’s soccer program was a member of the Peach Belt Conference from 2000 to 2004, and has now returned to the PBC for the 2016 campaign, although FMU will be ineligible for the conference tournament.

FMU receives the 2004 Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship trophy.

The Patriots celebrate after a victory in 2004.
