2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK The Francis Marion University men’s basketball team will open its 2015-16 campaign on Friday (Nov. 13) when the Patriots play host to Catawba College in the annual Peach Belt Conference-South Atlantic Conference Challenge. The contest will tip-off at the unusual time of 11:30 a.m. in the Smith University Center. Daily admission will be $8 for adults and $5 for students. Francis Marion will face Lenoir-Rhyne University at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The squad’s newcomers include 6-5 junior guard Alante Fenner (transfer from Savannah State University), 6-6 junior forward Samson Nnaji (Indian River State College), 6-5 junior swingman Filipp Burnashov (Walters State Community College), 6-8 junior center Kenneth Jackson (Brunswick Community College and Mullins High product), 6-4 freshman swingman Nick Talko (Lely High School in Naples, Fla.), and 6-4 freshman guard Brandon Parker (Sumter High School).

FMU head coach Gary Edwards is entering his 10th year at Francis Marion and his 32nd year as a college head coach with a 512-381 mark. For the 2015-16 campaign, he welcomes back six lettermen – including three starters – from last year’s 13-15 squad that that tied for fifth in the Peach Belt Conference’s East Division standings. Last year’s record was belied by the fact that eight conference losses were by five points or less. The returnees are led by 2015 PBC Freshman of the Year Detrek Browning, who averaged 17.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game last season. In total, four freshmen, all of whom return this year as sophomores, accounted for 51.4 percent of the team’s offense in 2014-15. A 6-2 guard, Browning was the secondleading freshmen scorer in NCAA Division II and ranked among the Top 10 in the conference for scoring, assists (103), steals (71), and free throw percentage (82.3). His theft total was a new Patriot single-season record. Also returning is 6-4 sophomore swingman Mike Davis Jr. (11.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg), 6-7 sophomore forward Judah Alexander (5.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg), 6-1 sophomore swingman A.J. Jackson (7.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg), 6-3 senior forward David Jerome (4.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg), and 6-3 junior forward Alex Bryant (0.9 ppg, 1.3 rpg). All of the aforementioned players started at least seven contests last season. The Patriots also re-gain the services of 6-7 senior forward Mykel Harris. Harris averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounding during the 2013-14 season, but did not play last year.

Edwards said his probable starting lineup is still fluid, but Friday’s five may include Browning and Davis in the backcourt, Harris and Alexander at the forward spots, and Jackson in the post. Fenner, who averaged 9.2 points per game last year for the Division I Tigers, will spell Browning at the point position, but may also see time alongside Browning in the backcourt. Edwards also said that Jackson may be the squad’s top outside shooter and will certainly see time in a regular rotation as will Jerome and Bryant. Talko will miss this week’s contest as he recovers from an injury, while Burnashov and Nnaji are still waiting to be cleared to play by the NCAA. Edwards is counting on all three for regular contributions and said that Talko has the potential to follow Browning as the conference’s top freshman. “Nick is a tough player who shoots the ball well and most importantly understands how to play the game.” The coach also commented on the defensive work done by Parker in the pre-season and that the local product will see some minutes this season.

“I am cautiously optimistic heading into the season opener,” Edwards said. “I like our perimeter players and I think we are poised to have a good year defensively, but we are still trying to identify an inside game. “Our returning freshmen – now sophomore – all played a lot last year and I look for them to provide scoring from the outside. We have strength and muscle inside, but not an excess of height. That strength should aid us in rebounding, but we are still working on fundamentals in the paint. The rebounding stats will be a key. Last year we funneled our defense through recording steals, but this year we want to concentrate on rebounding the other team’s misses. Along the same lines, we want to lower our field goal percentage defense number from 45 percent to the lower 40’s or upper 30’s. This concentration has paid dividends in the pre-season and now we will see how it works when the regularseason lights are on.” 4

“One of the early keys to our success will be to stay healthy. We have not made any major changes in our approach. We are progressing with the fundamentals of basketball and will keep building. This is a good group of young men and they have worked hard in the pre-season.” Francis Marion’s 2015-16 schedule includes 15 home dates, including five of the squad’s first eight contests being in the Smith University Center. The Patriots open PBC play on Dec. 17 at the University of Montevallo. The slate also includes a Dec. 30 exhibition game with the South Carolina Gamecocks in Colonial Life Area. Entering its 45th season of basketball, Francis Marion is 24-20 all-time in season openers, including a 6-3 mark under Edwards. FMU trails 4-3 in the all-time series with Catawba, while LRU leads the all-time series 5-2.

scoring offense, and led NCAA Division II in three-point field goals made per game (13.8). FMU led the PBC in scoring (88.7 ppg) for the third straight year.

Gary Edwards, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Patriot men's basketball program, and his 32nd year as a college head coach. His career coaching mark stands at 512381 in 31 seasons, including a 7-4 mark in NCAA Tournament games and an 8-1 mark when playing for a conference or regional championship. Edwards, 57, took over the reins of the Francis Marion University men's basketball program on April 26, 2006, and became the sixth head coach in the program's 45-year history. His nine-year mark on the Patriot bench is 123125. He improved the Patriots' win total in each of his first four seasons in Florence and guided FMU to four consecutive winning campaigns -- a first since the program joined the NCAA in 1992 -- and only one year shy of the program record of five consecutive winning campaigns. In 2012, Edwards was named an Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations, assuming additional duties within the Francis Marion athletic department. Last year (2014-15), FMU registered a 13-15 record, a record belied by the fact that eight conference losses were by five points or less. Edwards recorded his 500th career victory with a 61-53 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University on Nov. 15, 2014. The squad finished second nationally in steals per game (11.5) and produced one All-Conference performer as well as the PBC Freshman of the Year. In 2013-14, the Patriots posted a 12-15 mark, including a road win over nationally ranked GSW. The Patriots placed fourth in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division and nearly upset nationally ranked Montevallo in the quarterfinals of the PBC Tournament. Francis Marion led the conference in three-pointers made per game (10.1) and free throw accuracy (school-record 76.4%). The squad featured one All-Conference and All-Region performer. During the 2012-13 campaign, the Patriots compiled an 11-15 record, ranked among the national leaders in team

In 2011-12, FMU posted a 16-12 overall mark and finished 9-9 in the PBC. Twelve of its 18 conference games were decided by a combined total of 47 points, with four going to overtime. For the second year in a row, his squad led the PBC in scoring offense at 81.6 ppg and ranked 13th nationally. FMU also set a team season record by shooting 74.6% from the free throw line, breaking a mark that had stood for 40 seasons. In 2010-11, Edwards directed the Patriots to a 16-11 mark and a tie for third place in the PBC's East Division standings. Two Patriots were named to the PBC All-Academic squad and one player was selected to the All-Conference team. His squad led the PBC in scoring offense and ranked 36th nationally at 80.6 ppg. In 2009-10, he took the Patriots to an 18-10 record and the team's first back-to-back winning seasons in 11 years. Francis Marion again placed third in the PBC's East Division. During the 2008-09 campiagn, he guided FMU to a 16-12 mark and a fifth-place finish during the Peach Belt regular season. He also took the Patriots overseas to compete in the prestigious Amsterdam Haarlem Basketball Week, held each year in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Francis Marion competed against teams from the Netherlands and Kazakhstan, as well as the Israeli National Team. In 2007-08, Francis Marion recorded a 12-16 mark (a three-win improvement over the previous year) and an eighth-place finish in the Peach Belt standings. During the year, Edwards captured his 400th career coaching victory (a 69-66 win over Coker College on Nov. 17, 2007), and the FMU program recorded its 500th all-time win (a 77-67 victory over UNC Pembroke on Jan. 16, 2008). Edwards came to Francis Marion after 10 seasons as head coach at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He guided the Indians to a 206-88 mark, including five 20-win campaigns, three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles, and four trips to the Division II national tournament. Under his guidance, IUP advanced to the Elite Eight twice (2000 and 2002) and participated in the 2002 Final Four. He left IUP as the winningest coach in that program's long history. Edwards returned to South Carolina, where he still ranks as the winningest coach at Division I Charleston Southern University. In nine seasons, he guided the Buccaneers to 121 wins (against 133 losses). His

GARY EDWARDS Year-by-Year COACHING FILE 1995 CSU squad won the Big South Conference title, and he twice earned Big South Conference "Coach of the Year" honors. He also previously coached at Atlantic Christian College (now known as Barton College), compiling a 62-35 mark in three seasons and leading the Bulldogs to two NAIA national tournament appearances. Prior to his arrival, the Bulldogs had recorded only one winning season in the previous 17 years. Edwards received a B.A. degree in English (magna cum laude) from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1979, where he was recognized as an academic All-American on the basketball court in 1979. He later earned a master's degree from Old Dominion University. His coaching career began in 1979 as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at his alma mater, Virginia Wesleyan. He then served as an assistant coach at Hofstra University for two years before taking over the Barton program. While coaching at IUP, Edwards served as a weekly columnist for the Indiana Gazette in Indiana, Pa. He has been a coach at the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp (2004-05) and the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (1979-82), as well as a head coach in the Summer Professional League of Puerto Rico (1993-95). He served as director of the "Four Great Days of Summer" basketball camps (1987-96). Each of the past eight seasons (2007-15), he has authored a weekly sports column in the Florence (S.C.) Morning News. He is married (Corinne) and has two adult children: Grady and Casey. FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY STAFF Dushawn Davis, Assistant Coach Dushawn Davis, a native of Mullins, S.C., enters his third year as an assistant coach on the Francis Marion University men's staff. His primary responsibilities include recruiting, on-floor coaching, individual player workouts, pre- and post-season workouts and academic support. Davis also assists in leading summer camps held here at FMU. Davis was a standout high school athlete at Mullins High School, where he lettered in three varsity sports: football, basketball, and baseball. He had the opportunity to play basketball and be coached by the legendary Mark Gerald. It is there that Davis grew a passion for learning and teaching the game of basketball. Although Davis had college scholarship offers in both basketball and football, he chose to further his football career at the collegiate level at Newberry College, in hopes of being able to eventually become a dual athlete and continue basketball as well. After his sophomore year, Davis transferred to Coastal Carolina University, where he finished his football career and received a B.A. degree in History in 2011. Following graduation, Davis found his way back to the hardwood. His former coach welcomed him back to Mullins High School to be a part of his staff. After being there for one year (2012-13) and helping Mullins to a 22-5 overall record, coach Gerald assisted him in getting to the collegiate level. Davis recently received his Masters degree in Sports Administration from Coker College in 2014. He is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

PEACH BELT CONFERENCE Francis Marion University is a member of the 14-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference (formerly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members include Armstrong State University (Savannah, Ga.), Augusta (Ga.) University, Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.), Flagler College (St. Augustine’s, Fla.), Georgia College (Milledgeville, Ga.), Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Ala.), UNC Pembroke, University of North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga.), USC Aiken, and Young Harris College (Young Harris, Ga.). Headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 15 sports, seven for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception, the Peach Belt Conference has worked tirelessly to become one of the elite conferences in NCAA Division II. Now entering its 25th season with 35 national championships and 28 national finalists, the PBC has accomplished that goal. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 sports. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C., to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in 1991. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Diana Kling enters her 11th year as associate commissioner and senior women’s administrator. Ken Gerlinger enters his 15th year as assistant commissioner for communications, Laura Buckalew is director of external operations (4th year), and Molly Johnson is in her first year in charge of New Media and Championships. Dr. William Abare, president of Flagler College, is the president of the Peach Belt for 2015-16. The 2015-16 Peach Belt men’s basketball tournament will begin with quarterfinal games at higher seeds on Feb. 27. The tournament semifinals and finals will be played March 5-6, 2016, at the site of the highest remaining West Division women’s seed.

FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, prides itself on providing a strong liberal arts education. Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for using the South Carolina terrain to outfox the British, the University enrolls nearly 4,000 students. The University offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select number of graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businesses and industries of the Pee Dee region. Francis Marion is the only state university serving the Pee Dee region, and many of its students are the first in their families to go to college. The campus features modern classroom buildings, laboratories and residence facilities to provide a safe, comfortable learning environment for students. The campus also features a number of recreational facilities that are available for use by students, faculty, staff and alumni, and for use in intramural and intercollegiate athletic competition. Most buildings have been constructed or renovated since 1970. Facilities are equipped with ramps, and those of more than one story are equipped with elevators. Though each building has its own unique design, all are planned for architectural harmony. The campus facilities include: Wallace House (President’s Home), J. Howard Stokes Administration Building (above photo), Office Services Building, Facilities Management/Campus Police Building, Walter Douglas Smith University Center, The Edward S. Ervin III Dining Hall, John K. Cauthen Educational Media Center, Founders Hall, Peter D. Hyman Fine Arts Center, Hugh K. Leatherman Sr. Science Facility (bottom right photo), Frank B. Lee Nursing Building (top left photo), Robert E. McNair Science Building, The Observatory, James A. Rogers Library, Thomas C. Stanton Academic Computer Center, The Grille (top right photo), and the BB&T/Amelia Wallace Faculty/Alumni Cottage. On campus housing includes The Village, Residence Halls, Forest Villas Apartment Complex, Forest Villas Community Center, and the Allard A. Allston Housing Office Complex. In addition to the Walter Douglas Smith University Center, which houses the gymnasium, raquetball courts, weightroom, fitness room, and an olympicsized swimming pool, other on-campus athletic facilities include John Kassab (tennis) Courts, a reslite eight-lane track, two natural grass intramural fields, and an outdoor recreational pool, and the new state-of-the-art Griffin Athletic Complex, which opened in 2012. It includes Clifford S. Cormell (baseball) Field at Sparrow Stadium, the FMU Softball Stadium, Murray G. Hartzler (soccer) Field, and a fieldhouse. 33

FMU CAMPUS HOUSING Living on campus is a once in a lifetime experience, and campus life is the best way to fully immerse yourself into life as a college student. FMU works hard to make sure the residence halls and apartments are an inviting and comfortable place to live and learn. Francis Marion University offers a progressive residence life program, offering both residence halls and apartment buildings. Freshmen live in the residence halls. The new Forest Villas complex provides an additional housing option for upperclassmen. FMU campus life promotes academic sucess in a safe, attractive, modern and well-maintained environment. All facilities have air-conditioning, telephone, cable TV, and Internet connections. Each room is equipped with a smoke/ fire detector. Student Housing consists of the Forest Villas Apartments (top and bottom photos), Resident Halls, and the Village Apartments. The Housing Office Complex includes a Tutoring Center/Study Hall and provides such services as mail delivery, equipment check out, package acceptance, and an information desk. Call the FMU Student Housing Office at 843-661-1330.

FMU’S SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTER FMU’S SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTER Named in honor of the university’s first president, Dr. Walter D. Smith, the Smith University Center provides comprehensive facilities for student services and activities as well as for recreation and athletic programs to serve students, faculty, and staff. Opened in 1974, the center’s gymnasium orginally seated 3,027 for basketball, but with recent renovations that include new theatre-style seats, a new hardwood floor, new scoreboards, a new lighting and sound system, and a new paint job it now seats 2,547. The FMU men’s basketball team owns a 330-206 (.616) record in the Smith University Center, while the Patriot Women have compiled a 428-137 (.758) mark in the building. In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises. Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament, and in 1988, the U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team played an exhibition game against the Cuban National Team. In 1998, 1999, and 2008, FMU hosted the NCAA Division II women’s basketball South Atlantic Regional Tournament.

FMU PROGRAM NOTES •

Bob Hogsett, a 6’8” 250-pound former NBA player was Francis Marion’s first head coach

Freshman forward David Riggins scored the Patriots’ first points from the foul line with 16:37 left in the first half of the school’s opening game, Nov. 20, 1970, against the College of Charleston in Charleston’s Tip-Off Tournament. Riggins is currently the athletic director at Mars Hill College.

Francis Marion’s first victory was a 76-68 decision over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington freshmen squad, Dec. 7, 1970, in the Southside High School gym.

Because Francis Marion lacked an on-campus gymnasium, the Patriots played their home games for the first four years in local high school gyms.

Patriot forward Allen Floyd ranked second in the state among all collegiate players in scoring for both the 1971-72 (21.9 ppg) and 1972-73 (22.4 ppg) seasons. He finished his career as the school’s career scoring (1,599) and rebounding (933) leader.

The on-campus 3,027-seat Smith University Center opened in 1974 and the Patriots won their first official “home” game, a 93-56 victory over Coker College, Nov. 22, 1974.

During the 1975-76 season, sophomore guard Bobby Shaw produced six consecutive 30-point games.

On April 5, 1976, Lewis Hill took over the Patriot coaching reigns from Tim Watson.

To open the 1979-80 season, Francis Marion won 13 of its first 14 games, including a 90-79 road victory over NCAA Division I Tennessee Tech University on Dec. 11, enroute to a program-best 24-7 record.

Senior forward Robert Moore earned second-team AllAmerica recognition and was named the NAIA District Six “Player of the Year” following the 1979-80 campaign. Moore is now the team doctor.

Guard Cleveland Lawson became the first Patriot to score a three-point field goal, during an 88-76 loss to Georgia Tech on Jan. 26, 1983, in Atlanta, Ga.

Between 1983 and 1988, the Patriots won at least 19 games each of the five seasons.

During the 1983-84 season, Francis Marion finished ninth in the NAIA in team scoring defense (57.5 ppg) and defeated two NCAA Division I opponents: The Citadel and East Carolina University.

The Patriots opened the 1985-86 campaign by winning their first eight games and 11 of their first 12, and were ranked as high as sixth in the nation (NAIA) in January of that year. Among the team’s 22 wins (8 losses) was another victory over The Citadel (a team that listed on its roster a guard named Ed Conroy, who would later become the head coach at Francis Marion). On Jan. 13, 1987, Francis Marion defeated Shaw University 122-108 in the highest scoring game in the program’s history.

In their next-to-last season as an NAIA member (199091), Francis Marion posted a 22-10 record and won it first-ever NAIA District Six championship, thus earning the right to advance to Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo., for the famed NAIA National Tournament.

Jay McDermott, a 6’8” center, was the first Patriot to dunk the basketball after the shot was reintroduced to the college game in 1976.

In 1992, Francis Marion moved from college to university status and from NAIA to full-fledged NCAA Division II affiliation.

The 1977-78 campaign was a “season to remember” for Patriot fans with the team making its first-ever postseason appearance in the NAIA District Six playoffs and recording its first-ever winning record (20-8) and first-ever 20-win season.

Included among the team’s 19 wins in 1992-93, was a 52-50 victory at USC-Spartanburg that ended the Rifles’ 50-game home-court winning streak, longest in the nation (any division) at that time.
