Bistrița

history Bistrita is located in a wide valley surrounded by hills with gentle heights dominating the landscape, crossed by the Bistrita valley from which it took its name, the location developed due to the fact that in the northeastern corner of Transylvania, in the early Middle Ages between the royal possessions were installed Flanders, Wallonians, Saxons, Bavarians, who will be later known under the generic name of Sasi, that were given with certain rights that have conferred thema privileged social and economic status, a process that occurred after the middle of the twelfth century. The first mention of the town dates from 1241, when the monastery of Echternach codices mentioned the name given to the settlement by colonists who founded the Bistrita river. The Mongol invasion in 1241-1242 destroyed most of the Hungarian Kingdom. Even if the people did everything they could to resist, many of their houses were destroyed. Before the invasion, many cities were defensed by strong walls and by their political status. Many were protected by the Kirchenburgen ( big, strong churches ). The fast expansion of the cities populated by Sasi gave Transilvania the german name Siebenburgen ( seven cities ) – Bistrita, Sibiu, Cluj, Brasov, Medias, Sebes, Sighisoara.

Did you know that this is an ostrich? You can see it all over the city. It’s a very important symbol to our town.

It’s holding a horse-shoe ( supposed to bring luck )

geography Bistrita is located in the north-east of Podisul Transilvaniei and it is near Bistrita River.

MONUMENTS ď Ž

Bistrita is the home of some great monuments that give pride to our city. Our greatest of all is the Evangelic Church, very old. Now it is restored and the tower is more beautiful then ever. The statue of George Cosbuc is located in our Park, recently restored. It is very beautiful and it can be visited by tourists who go to the pond ( more details in the touristic atractions chapter ).
