A Critical Stages, Catnip and MopHead Production

4000 Miles BY AMY HERZOG

Finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play; Named Time Magazine’s #1 Play or Musical of 2012 21-year-old Leo rocks up unannounced at the Manhattan apartment of his 91-year-old Jewish grandmother Vera. Having broken up with his girlfriend and cycled across the country, he needs a place to crash for the night, no questions asked. But Vera – prickly, stubborn and sharp as a tack – isn’t about to let him off that easily.

As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, 4000 Miles unearths a surprising parallel between these two generations in this emotionally compelling drama. With disarming frankness and surprising candour, the two negotiate social potholes and trace emotional fault lines that link them to a painful family history. From one of America’s brightest playwrights, this compassionate and unsentimental play explores the funny, frustrating and ultimately life-changing relationship between a grandson learning to face his life and a grandmother who is starting to forget hers.

Heavenly Creatures MOZART, BEETHOVEN & HAYDN

BEETHOVEN The Creatures of Prometheus: Overture HAYDN Te Deum for the Empress Marie Thérèse MOZART Litany of the Blessed Sacrament, K243 MOZART Ave verum corpus, K618 The SSO comes to town with the Sydney Philharmonia Chamber Singers for a Classical program that will raise the roof with the sounds of celebration!

Beethoven’s only ballet uses the myth of Prometheus to celebrate the civilising influence of theatre, dance and music. And its overture has all the brilliance and assurance of youth. In this concert it introduces choral music by the two great Classical masters. Haydn’s Te Deum rings with praise and the sounds of trumpets and drums. Mozart’s Litany brings the expressive power of opera to religious devotion. Composed when Mozart was 20 years old, this Litany with its rich variety of music, also gives us a chance to showcase four young Australian vocal soloists. We follow it with one of Mozart’s last compositions, the exquisitely serene and profoundly moving ‘Ave verum corpus’. Heavenly!

Hairspray Book by Mark O'Donnell & Thomas Meehan, Music by Marc Shaiman, Lyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman Based on the New Line Cinema Film written & directed by John Waters

Welcome to the 60s! Hairspray is the fun musical with Big Songs, Big Dance Routines & Big Hair. The story revolves around Tracy Turnblad – a big girl with an even bigger heart, who has only one passion – to dance on “The Corny Collins Show,” Baltimore’s hippest TV dance party. Tracy seems a natural fit for the show, except for one not-so-little problem – she doesn’t fit in. Her plus-sized figure has always set her apart from the cool crowd, which she is reminded of by her loving but overly protective plus-sized mother, Edna who tries to protect her by not letting her do anything to bring attention to herself. During a brief stint in class detention Tracy learns a new “Afro American Dance” from some of the other “Coloured Kids”. With their permission Tracy wows the TV host Corny Collins at her high school dance, winning herself a spot on his show and becomes an instant on-air sensation, much to the chagrin of the show’s reigning princess, Amber Von Tussle, and her scheming mother, Velma, who runs television station WYZT.

Even worse for Amber is the fact that it’s not just the audience who loves the new girl in town; Amber’s would-be sweetheart, Link Larkin, seems to be smitten with Tracy’s charms as well. Back at school things “hot-up” as Tracy’s best friend Penny Pingleton falls for a young “coloured” man affectionately known as “Seaweed” she met in detention who dances once a month on the Corny Collins Show during “Negro Day”. As the budding relationship between her best friend Penny and Seaweed develops, Tracy’s eyes open to a bigger issue than the latest dance craze or the coolest hairdo – racial inequality. Throwing caution to the wind, Tracy leads a march with Negro Day’s Host Motormouth Maybelle to fight for integration. Has Tracy’s luck finally run out? Will she miss the final dance-off against Amber and forfeit the title of “Miss Hairspray”? OR will she sing and dance her way out of trouble again? Join Orange Theatre Company for this fun-filled musical for all the family.

Sugarland

BY AUSTRALIAN THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (ATYP)

Sugarland provides a glimpse into a teenage Australia that feels like a foreign country. This exceptional new play will make you laugh, cry and stay with you long after you leave the theatre. Nina is 16 years old, good at school, has a job at the cinema and one of the best singing voices around. But none of that is important. She needs a place to live. Living with her Aunty in an overcrowded house, things aren’t going well and it’s getting complicated.

Erica is 16 and the new girl in town. Her Dad’s in the RAAF and the family’s just moved to Katherine. She’s lived all over Australia and every time she makes somewhere home, she moves again. She’s so used to being an outsider, she’s stopped trying to fit in. The only thing they have in common is the music they listen to. Sometimes that’s enough. Sugarland is toured by Performing Lines for Blak Lines, and was commissioned and developed by Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP). The original production was co-directed by Fraser Corfield and David Page.

Sydney Dance Company

CounterMove Sydney Dance Company’s CounterMove explores luminescence and life in a double bill that will enchant, compel and amuse with exhilarating physical dance by some of Australia’s finest dancers. From one of the world’s most exciting choreographers comes a laugh-outloud funny and affectionate tribute and parody of modern art: Cacti. Swedish Alexander Ekman’s witty and energetic piece, performed by the full Company and a string quartet, will take you in with a knowing wink, then surprise you with its bracing physicality. The Australian proclaimed Cacti ‘… a delight: witty, effervescent, playful, surreal and joyously physical’, Time Out Sydney lauded its ‘infectious playful energy and absolutely incisive wit’.

Crikey.com called it ‘blindingly brilliant’ and the Daily Telegraph noted the audience’s laughter was ‘impossible to suppress’. Cacti has been on tour since it premiered in 2013 performing to soldout audiences. Rafael Bonachela’s world premiere, Lux Tenebris, provides the perfect contrast: light and darkness emerging from a dusky sonic landscape by composer Nick Wales (long-term collaborator of Sarah Blasko). Movement follows deep, unexpected, visceral beats, and sharp, sudden twists to discover a dark place where there is space for beauty and light. Bonachela’s work, as always, is deeply emotional. CounterMove will intrigue, move and entertain you. Don’t miss out.

Bell Shakespeare

Othello “O, Beware, My lord, of jealousy; It is the green ey’d monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on” —Act 3 Scene 3

One of William Shakespeare’s most famous and passionate tragedies, Othello will be directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Peter Evans, in a gripping production that will touch audiences to their core, as envy is a weapon wielded with brazen savagery, and the complex contradictory nature of humanity is tested.

A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion. A warrior on the fields of war, felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous rage when he is betrayed by his military brother-in-arms, the cynically destructive Iago.

Starring Ray Chong Nee (Bell Shakespeare’s The Dream and MTC’s I Call My Brothers) as Othello and Yalin Ozucelik (Bell Shakespeare’s Henry IV and STC’s Cyrano de Bergerac) as Iago in one of Shakespeare’s most captivating and devastating pairings, this astonishing epic tragedy will rage with jealousy on stages across Australia in Bell Shakespeare’s 2016 National Tour.

The Wharf Revue CELEBRATING 15 YEARS

WRITTEN AND CREATED BY JONATHAN BIGGINS, DREW FORSYTHE AND PHILLIP SCOTT

There ain’t no party like a Wharf Revue party Over 15 years and 21 shows, they’ve mercilessly mocked all the usual suspects. We’ve watched Howard Tampa with refugees, Rudd give pennies from Kevin, Gillard refuse to be lectured by “that man”, “that man” scrap the carbon tax, stop the boats and – um – get the budget back into surplus… But no one has been able to outplay, outwit or outlast The Wharf Revue. So, we’re throwing a party and everyone’s invited.

This year, The Wharf Revue will be a parade of past and present indignitaries – a who’s who of 21st century embarrassments, from the politicians to the celebrities – all skewered on the stake of seriously side-splitting satirical silliness and musical mayhem. Who will make the cut? Who has the numbers in the caucus room? It’s anyone’s guess.

A FICTIONALISED STORY INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF JIMMY LITTLE

By Reg Cribb Original Concept by Michael Tuahine Country Song is a fictionalised story inspired by the life of Jimmy Little - a witty, warm journey back into Australia’s recent past. It’s the ’70s and Jimmy takes a nostalgic trip through his past, from talented teen to honey-voiced guitarslinger, to respected leader. Indigenous

Michael Tuahine leads a cast of six actor/ musicians in this yarn, drawing on the life of the gentleman balladeer, peppered with old-time hits from Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins, to Jimmy’s own No.1 Royal Telephone and his covers of ‘80s hits Under the Milky Way and Blackfella/ Whitefella. Merelli, who has a slight heart condition, arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and instead of calming his nerves passes out on the bed. Morelli’s hot tempered wife discovers Saunders starry eyed daughter in the closet of his bedroom waiting to get Merelli’s autograph. Assuming the worst she decides to leave the famous tenor forever, writing a “Dear John” note saying how life is not worth living and places the note beside him. Add to this, the arrival of the company’s flirtatious leading lady who is frantically trying to meet the famous tenor before the evenings performance, The Grand Dame of the Cleveland Light Opera Company coming to pay her respects to the tenor, and the hotels Bellhop trying to get a “scoop” to sell to the tabloid newspapers (and not forgetting Saunders starry eyed daughter in the closet) chaos soon reins supreme. If this wasn’t enough for Saunders and Max to deal with, Morelli finally comes to, and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Never Did Me Any Harm Devised by Force Majeure

Using a distinctive language of dance, images and text, Force Majeure and Sydney Theatre Company create an emotional, humorous and insightful work that cannot fail to resonate with all who were once children.

Never before have parents been under such pressure when it comes to raising children. Is the pressure to get it right overwhelming us? And what is ‘good parenting’ anyway? Are children today given too much choice? Too few boundaries? Less chance to take risks?

Never Did Me Any Harm is a captivating work that has attracted rave reviews with its power, poignancy and distinctively Australian humour.

Drawing inspiration from real-life interviews, award-winning director and choreographer Kate Champion explores contemporary attitudes to raising children in this provocative dance theatre work.

HIT Productions

Always… Patsy Cline BY TED SWINDLEY

Always…Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961 and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down home country humor, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes 27 of Patsy’ unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.”

Always…Patsy Cline has enjoyed great success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway. It has been one of the most produced musicals in America according to American Theatre Magazine. Always…Patsy Cline has also been enjoyed internationally by audiences in Canada, the UK and Australia. This new production directed by AFI award winning Denny Lawrence stars award winning Australian Country Music singing sensation Courtney Conway as Patsy Cline and popular stage star Mandi Lodge (Menopause The Musical, Just The Ticket) as Louise Seger.

Orange Theatre Company presents

Mary Poppins A Musical based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film Original Music and Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman Book by Julian Fellowes New Songs and Additional Music and Lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe Co-Created by Cameron Mackintosh By arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd Exclusive agent for Music Theatre International (NY)

Believe in the magic! Mary Poppins is the story of the Banks family who live in a big house in London on Cherry Tree Lane. Things are not going well for the family. The children, Jane and Michael, are out of control and in need of a new nanny. Jane and Michael have their own ideas about what sort of caretaker they should have, while their parents – and in particular Mr Banks – are insistent on someone strict for the job. When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep, the family finds that she’s the answer to their prayers but in the most peculiar way. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable

adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises “anything can happen if you let it.” Broadway’s perfectly magic musical flies into Orange. It isn’t every day that a whimsical nanny soars in on a mysterious breeze and changes your life. That is, unless you live at 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Every day is filled with joy, laughter, and love – and every night is spent dancing on the rooftops of London. So believe in the magic of Mary Poppins and fly away to a place where anything can happen if you let it.
