Fat-Freezing Phenomenon Introducing Cooltec, a new revolutionary weight loss treatment that helps reduce stubborn fat by up to 40% after just one treatment.

W

hether belly fat, back fat or abdominal fat, an incredible new treatment exclusive to Therapie Clinic will freeze, break down and eliminate stubborn fat cells by up to 40% after just one treatment. COOLTEC is the new non-invasive treatment that will tackle stubborn fat cells, impervious to diet and exercise and help you achieve the perfect body.

The non-invasive way to reduce stubborn fat effectively, with no downtime.

BENEFITS OF COOLTEC

The Results Results can be seen in as little as 15 days after treatment and the fat cell reduction continues for 3 months. Stubborn, fat deposits in the targeted areas are reduced by between 20% and 40% after just one treatment. Expect to lose inches from your desired area, whether waist, love handles, tum, derriere, thighs, abdomen or back. COOLTEC is particularly effective at shaping and contouring the waist, giving a lean, toned, sexy curve to the body.

The Proof COOLTEC is safe and effective, FDA approved with zero downtime. Treatment can be carried out on your lunch hour, just expect to feel like you’ve done a serious work out! This is the future for body contouring, shaping, toning and refining.

How does it work? COOLTEC exposes fat cells to controlled cooling which breaks down the fat and destroys it so that it can be naturally flushed away from the body. A suction-like device draws in the tissue and cools the fat cells which shrink, break down and are removed by the body’s natural metabolic process. The fat cells are killed off permanently and cannot return in that area. The treatment is non-invasive with zero downtime.

Whether belly fat, back fat, abdominal fat or stubborn fat on the thighs, hips or buttocks, get the body you’ve only ever dreamed possible with COOLTEC. Body perfection including that sexy flat stomach can be yours with just one treatment. Book a free consultation today and find out how you can sculpt your body to perfection in 2013.

Revolutionary Anti-Ageing Treatment The quest for younger looking, firmer, more radiant, line-free skin is a quest we have all undertaken and a road we gladly continue to travel.

T

he ancient Egyptians were the first to document their attempts to halt the ageing process, noting the effects of certain clays and minerals on the skin, in the hope of warding off wrinkles and remaining eternally youthful. Thankfully science and technology have come a long way since then and incredible new advances mean that it is possible to not only halt the passage of time but dramatically rejuvenate the skin, erase lines and wrinkles, eliminate pigmentation and even encourage the production of new collagen to improve skin’s texture and tone; and in so doing, look years younger! Enter iPixel, the new and revolutionary skin resurfacing treatment exclusively available at Therapie Clinics in Northern Ireland. This ground-breaking treatment means that it is now possible to literally turn back the hands of time and look between 10-15 years younger, critically without having to go under the surgeon’s knife. The treatment is FDA-approved and is quite simply revolutionising the anti-ageing industry and changing how we will approach the ageing process, forever.

Sinead O’Brien, client at Therapie Clinic

Whether you’ve lost that youthful glow and are noticing the emergence of the first few lines and wrinkles or perhaps your skin has much deeper set wrinkles and a great deal of sun damage; no

matter where you are in the ageing process, the beauty of this treatment is that it can be tailored to suit your individual needs and deliver a complete rejuvenation and transformation. We spoke to one client, Sinead O’Brien who said: “Like every woman on the planet, I’ve spent a small fortune and have tried almost every product under the sun, trying all the latest key ingredients. I’ve even tried botox. I had my last iPixel treatment about 3 weeks ago, after a recommendation from a friend and I just cannot believe how amazing my skin looks and feels. It’s tighter, brighter, smoother and I have to say, I do look younger! I’m getting so many compliments and my skin specialist at Therapie Clinic tells me that I can expect my skin to continue to improve, over the next 6 months!”

Not only does the iPixel treatment radically firm-up loose skin and give a more contoured, youthful appearance, erasing lines and wrinkles over a tailored treatment plan but it is also incredibly effective on scarring such as acne scars.

“The most effective and results-driven technology in the world” How does iPixel work?

Unlike topical creams, laser skin resurfacing works deep in the underlying tissues to fight those fine lines and wrinkles and the uneven skin tone that often accompanies growing older. The procedure gradually stimulates new cells to replace aged and photo-aged skin, delivering new, healthier, smoother tissue in place of old skin imperfections. This is the most advanced anti-ageing technology available, with leading dermatologists referring to it as “the most effective and resultsdriven technology in the world”. Therapie Clinic has clinics nationwide including Belfast, L/Derry and Newry and offers free skin consultations. To contact Therapie Clinic phone 08000 121 565. www.therapieclinic.co.uk

Truly Talented This month we catch up with the ever stylish Sara O’Neill to find out more about her talent for drawing. Since graduating from the University of Ulster with a BA Hons in Fashion and Textiles in 2004, Sara has established herself as one of Northern Ireland’s top stylists, with a host of advertising campaigns, magazine editorials and catwalk shows to her name. Her creativity, professionalism, eye for detail and ability to realise her clients’ vision has kept her in constant demand over the years. “My first styling job was for photographer Gavin Millar who was doing a shoot in The Merchant Hotel in Belfast. I began working regularly with Gavin and gradually got to know Khara Pringle as well and both helped me to establish myself and build up a loyal client base.” “While I love styling, I’ve also developed my drawing, which is heavily influenced by my work in the fashion industry, over the past couple of years. What originally started as a hobby has led to my first solo exhibition which I held at the Frame of Mine gallery on Belfast’s Ormeau Road. This exhibition entitled “La Belle et La Bete” was inspired by aesthetically challenged men and the women who love them.” Sara’s first exhibition sold out as people were captivated by her intricately detailed drawings and as well as regular commissions since this time she also began

work on a second collection of drawings entitled, “Love Me To Death”, which she once again exhibited in the Frame of Mine gallery back in November 2012. “Love Me To Death is a series of drawings based on my love

of fashion and classic gothic literature, which I have been obsessed with since childhood. I love the whole macabre beauty that author’s like Dickens created and I wanted to bring it to life through this series of drawings.” As her love of drawing continues to grow, Sara has approached and been taken on by commercial illustration agency, Lemonade who are based in London. “I had been procrastinating over contacting an illustration agency for some time and Lemonade is one of the best, so one day I sent them an email and to my surprise they got back later that day to say they would love to represent me and that I had great talent, however I needed to show more commercial focus.” “I was so thrilled to be offered this opportunity but unfortunately I didn’t have the time at moment to generate the pieces to prove that I could have commercial appeal. I was fully aware that I could be missing a great opportunity but initially I had to pass it up because I didn’t want to dishonor existing commitments to my second solo exhibition and the styling jobs I had lined up too. “Fortunately, the risk to postpone paid off and once I cleared my diary after Christmas I got in touch with Lemonade again and this time I

had the time to present them with the work they needed. Now I’m on their books and I’m so excited to see how things turn out. There are no guarantees that their clients and they work with some amazing clients - will book me, but it is a fantastic start for me in 2013.” While Sara loves her fashion styling and has no plans to stop doing this anytime soon, she would love the opportunity to establish her drawing allowing her the freedom to travel and work from anywhere. “I love styling and I’ve learnt so much over the years from being round photographers, how light affects an object for example, that I now find myself applying what I have picked up to my drawings! However, I would love the chance to do more travelling. I love people watching, walking around cities looking at the architecture and life going on around me and as much as that’s great for your own sanity, while you relax you also take in so much to bring back and apply, whether to my styling work or my drawings.” So, anything else in the pipeline? “I like the idea of translating some of my drawings on to clothing and printing them on to T-shirts for example, so who knows this could be my next venture - watch this space!

You will find Sara’s work on display in Frame of Mine, Ormeau Road, Belfast; The Yard, Holywood; Sheldon Gallery in Belfast City Centre and Canvas in Stranmillis. www.saras-designs.co.uk

Styling: David Henderson David Henderson is Manager and Designer at Unify Collective Fashion Studio, Belfast. His work was initially inspired by medieval armour and the pattern of the embellishments. This concept was further developed into design and fabric manipulation by drawing inspiration from the “Brothers Grimm” Fairytales to style and create his recent collections. With the fairytales, there is no limit to imagination, and so designs and fashion can be breath taking and dramatic. Other major influences include conceptual fashion designers Alexander McQueen and Issey Miyake. He has definitely made an impression on the NI fashion scene displaying his collection at Belfast FASHIONWEEK 2010-12 and with a recent dabble in men’s wear, which proved a big hit with lovers of alternative fashion, there is much more to anticipate from this promising and original designer. As one of Belfast’s few male designers, David keeps his feet firmly on the ground, and his cool, mysterious demeanour means that we can always expect the unexpected from him and his creations. David’s collections will be expanding into Ladies Formal and Bridal wear over 2013 and promises not to disappoint for any fashion or textile enthusiast. www.facebook.com/unifystudio

Romancing the Ruffle The new season sees the collections share a refreshing take on fabric manipulation, just in time for Valentine’s Day romantic ruffles take centre stage and win our hearts. Flouncing soft bends, intricate flowing trims and rapturous ripples of ruffles create a modern, yet effortlessly elegant statement. This season saw the spring /summer catwalks indulge in the frivolity of frothy frills at ChloÊ, Marc Jacobs and Gucci, to name a few. The fabrics were often iridescent and translucent, construction took forms of cascading soft waves or structured panels of ruching. The addition of a ruffle is not only a decorative adornment. When applied as a peplum to a waist, to a sleeve on a blouse, or the hem of a dress it creates a new form and shape, offering a fresh silhouette.

Tried & Tested

Margaret Connolly headed to The Beauty Company in Belfast to try one of their Danne Montague King Facials. To say I was anxious about my Danne Montague-King facial was an understatement! Being claustrophobic at the best of times and having witnessed this treatment applied a few weeks previously, the thought of in the enyzme mask that causing pulses and restricts movement was bringing me out in a cold sweat! However, having experienced this treatment I can say that I was over-reacting! Yes, this is not a ‘pleasant‘ treatment, but it is surprisingly relaxing and it really does achieve results. From the beginning my therapist, Fiona, was brilliant, going through the consultation sheet with me (I had previously had a patch test done before my appointment) to match my skin with the appropriate DMK skin therapy and she then remained with me the entire time to alleviate any anxiety about the treatment. Once my face was thoroughly cleansed and prepped, Enzyme Mask 1 was applied. Enzyme Masque 1 focuses on skin performance. It is suitable for most skin conditions, and aids in firming and tightening the skin and increasing bounce. I could gradually feel the mask tightening on my skin and while I could still talk a bit, I couldn’t easily move my head or neck while it was on, however, as soon as the hot towels were applied to start taking it off, movement was easier. There is a pulsing sensation where your lymph nodes are at the base of the neck, while this

had initially caused me concern, this was surprisingly relaxing and immediate proof that the treatment works to eradicate the toxins from your skin and out of the body. Having seen a mask applied to someone else I had a fair idea of my appearance in the mask, and let’s just say it’s not pleasant. The capillaries on your face neck and check are brought to the surface and Fiona checked to see that this was happening and in my case there were a good few, which apparently is the result you want because the more there are the healthier your skin. Fiona explains that removing the the mask off is hard, as the enzymes are attracted to your skin and don’t want to detach, however, by this she means it is hard work for her, all I had to do was lie back and let it happen! After all is over my skin feels so fresh and although a few of the capillaries were still on show after a while I was left was a refreshed complexion. So impressed was I, that I actually returned to purchase the home care products and I’m now following the DMK beauty regime at home, to try an hydrate my skin and prevent aging. Although not following the recommended course of facials, I will return the facials as well because personally I would rather be spending an hour or two knowing I am really achieving something than simply being slathered in luxurious creams and oils.

Turn Back The Years Katie Boyd from The Beauty Company in Belfast announces the arrival of paramedical skincare line DANNE MONTAGUE KING (DMK) While most of my New Year resolutions have come and gone by this time in February, the one I made to turn back the years namely on my face is still going strong! I once heard a relative say “every line on my face tells a story about my life.” Not for me Susie, this year I want to begin to remove those “stories” and how I hear you ask would one achieve such an undertaking? Enter DANNE MONTAGUEKING (DMK), a paramedical line for those who are serious about their skin, and even more serious about results. The founder, Dr King, whom the company was named after is in his late seventies but could easily pass for early forties. He has contributed to medical journals around the world, with his niche area being glycolisation. Glycolisation occurs in smokers and diabetics. In layman’s terms, these people don’t use the sugars in their skin properly meaning that they look wrinkled when in fact they shouldn’t be.

DMK treatments are for people who are serious about skincare and even more serious about results. The advanced formulas achieve results that are nothing short of miraculous. If you have concerns about ageing, acne, pigmentation, rosacea, excess hair growth or scarring, and don’t even get me started on the body - then DMK offers an effective solution. As the manager of The Beauty Company, I am more than delighted to announce that we have opened the first Danne Montague King clinic. The results our therapists have been seeing in their case studies is nothing short of miraculous. This fact was backed up by the recent BBC3 documentary which detailed the incredible outcome that an acne sufferer in England had achieved when he chose to embark upon these treatments and shun the usual antibiotic route. So whatever, your own personal skincare or body woe, don’t delay in calling in to see us for a consultation and patch test.

In Love With Make-Up Paddy McGurgan, make-up artist and owner of the Make-Up Pro Store in Belfast offers his expert advice on how to look your best this Valentine’s Day...

Senna Lip Gloss, Code Red, £14.50

Senna,Voluptulash Mascara, £16.50

Whether it’s a first date, a romantic evening out with the husband or a quiet night in, we all want to look fabulous and fully embrace the loved up atmosphere of Valentine’s Day. This year let me share some product recommendations and secret tips to ensure you feel ultra-glamorous with a romantic look that both you and your Valentine will be sure to love. The number one thing to avoid is thinking that you need to look like a completely different person. Your husband, boyfriend or partner wants to see the 'you' they love, so make sure you look like yourself, but your most gorgeous self. Too much make up generally freaks men out so aim for natural feminine beauty. Apply Make Up Studio Face It Light Cream Foundation to really even out the skin tone and create a flawless complexion. The light texture will give a beautifully natural look with an airbrushed finish. Further camouflage any imperfections or shadows on the face and around the eye area with Make Up Studio Concealer. To ensure your foundation remains in place, set with Make Up Studio Natural Silk Perfection. This powder has a very light and velvety texture so the skin does not look too powdered or matte but sets your make up base perfectly for lasting charm well into the evening. For a subtle but sultry eye look, blend varying shades of brown together. A lighter shade such as Make Up Studio Eyeshadow in

shade 203 can be placed all over the lid and onto the brow bone to highlight, place a darker tone such as 101 across the eyelid and blend into the crease of the eye. To really let the eyes do the talking apply Lumiere Shadow in Golden Brown to the outer corner of the lid and under the eye as close to the lash line as possible, the subtle shimmer will take the look from day to night and add a flirtatious finish. To really create the smokey eye look, apply Make Up Studio Cream Liner in Black to outline and smudge slightly to create a natural finish without a harsh, solid line. Coat the lashes with Senna Voluptulash mascara in black, it is completely smudge proof and gives a fantastic false lash effect. Create a pretty flush of colour on the cheekbones with Make Up Studio Blush in shade 54, a warm peach tone beautifully suited for all skin tones. Place on the apple of the cheekbone for a natural, healthy glow. Finally, a kiss at the end of the night is a must, for irresistible lips apply Make Up Studio Lip Liner in red to define the lip shape and prevent the lipstick from bleeding. For more intense colour and eyecatching lips follow with a racy red lipstick. Apply using a lip brush to avoid using too much colour as this can encourage bleeding. Alternatively for a gorgeous, glossy look, Senna Red lip gloss provides a hint of sheer colour creating the perfect, kissable pout.

Spa Slueth Pre-Spring/Summer it’s time to explore a revolutionary new weight loss treatment at Thérapie Clinic in Belfast.

by Margaret Connolly Okay, all men and women - well most of us - have that stubborn bit of fat that we would love to shift. Whether from around the tummy, those love handles making their presence felt on the back, the wobbly bit at the top of the thighs or perhaps the bingo wings that cause angst every time you want to wear a sleeveless top! To be honest, two kids and a job that involves sitting at the computer for far too many hours everyday, and I would love to zap all of the above! However, if I could pick one above the all the rest, it would be my stomach - and so this was the area I chose to put to the test of the phenomenal fat freezing treatment making a name for itself at Thérapie Clinic in Belfast. Cooltec, as it’s known, is FDA approved and actually freezes those stubborn fat cells sitting under the skin

to -8C and has proven elimination results of up to 40 percent after one treatment of the targeted area. My therapist, Alison, actually informs me that the treatment is so intense that I can only have the treatment done on my stomach three times in my lifetime! This better work - that only leaves two more strikes before I have to take more drastic action! However, I still have all those other areas to zap! But, any area you choose - it’s three hits and that’s it! I am weighed and measured - no details being disclosed here! - and then lie down to have the protective pads placed over my stomach because I’m told if they weren’t there I could experience a chill burn that would be worse than a fire one! The ‘vacuum’ is then positioned - and Alison repositions it until she

beauty

51 is happy that all is as it should be and then the treatment begins. I do experience a bit of discomfort as the area starts to cool, but after a few minutes I feel nothing and then it’s time to lie back and relax for the next hour and think about all those nasty fat cells being frozen to within an inch of their life - hurray! What a productive lunchtime (allow 90 minutes in total)! I should stress here, that this is not a treatment that replaces healthy eating and exercise to maintain your weight, nor does it suit everyone - you may be carrying too much or indeed too little weight for the treatment - but consultations are free if you think you’d like to give it a go. After the hour is up, Alison removes the ‘vacuum and the protective pads and gently massages the treated area, which is freezing and numb to touch, then I get dressed to carry on with my day. Although I was warned I may feel like I’ve done a 1,000 sit-up afterwards and experience some bruising I had neither, however, if you do this before a holiday it might be an idea to do so up to a month beforehand just in case! One week on and I’ve been adhering to my post-treatment care sheet. Alison also talked me through all I should be doing to ensure the best results from the treatment, so I have been eating healthily, drinking plenty of water and trying to exercise regularly - activities that will all help shift those treated fat cells into the lymph and out of my body! At an introductory cost of £495, I hope to see the full results within 15 days (although fat cell reduction from the treatment continues for up to three months!), but already I can see a slight shift and I do have a lot to shift! For those with that small bulge, one Cooltec treatment would certainly make an amazing difference. Hair Therapy Hairdresser Michael Quinn is on hand to tame your troublesome tresses!

by Michael Quinn

Q: Getting regular highlights in my hair can be costly. Is there a product I can use to preserve my colour for longer?

I would suggest using JOICO K-Pak Colour Therapy Shampoo, a great solution to preserve the hair colour and keep it lasting longer. It is a reconstructive formula that will improve the elasticity of the hair and prevent colour loss, leaving hair strong, shiny and full of life. Another product you may want to try is JOICO K-Pak Colour Therapy Restorative Styling Oil. This product can be used both on damp hair prior to blow drying or a little onto dry hair to add extra shine and smoothness. This oil has multiple benefits but most importantly, it prolongs colour longevity, with the hair being protected from fading caused by environmental stress and structural damage.

Q: I have long, dark brown hair and I would love that high gloss finish instead of it being dull and lifeless, any suggestions?

The first thing you should consider is regular intensive treatments, this will help to keep the hair nourished and conditioned but will also help to keep the colour looking vibrant and as a result increase shine to the hair. This treatment can be done in the comfort of your home, between salon appointments, try JOICO Smooth Cure Leave-in Rescue Treatment. It is designed to increase moisture and reduce frizz. Apply a small amount to the hands and run through the hair before blow drying for the ultimate smooth finish. When visiting the salon you can also ask for a colour refresher treatment, this can be done at the basin when you are

hair

53 having the hair washed, it only takes a couple of minutes and will really boost shine. Maintaining a regular haircare regime that is focussed on hydrating and nourishing hair will also help. JOICO Smooth Cure Shampoo and Conditioner is the perfect combo to do just this. It will cleanse the hair while also reducing frizz and leaving hair dramatically softer and more manageable. This cleansing duo will also help to prevent damage caused from heat and thermal tools, leaving a smooth and sleek finish.

Q: How can I create volume when I am styling part of my hair up and the rest down and tussled?

Smooth Cure Leave-in Rescue Treatment, £11.90 Structure Dust Hair Powder, £12.95 K-Pak, Colour Therapy Shampoo, £10.95

The most important factor here is good preparation, styling and finishing products; it is essential to keep the hair in place the whole day through. Before separating the top section of hair up into the ponytail add a little JOICO Structure Dust Hair Powder. This ‘magic powder’ delivers instant volume and texture in every speck. Anyone lacking a little volume can use this product; just lightly sprinkle onto dry/damp hair at the scalp area. A great tip once you have placed the top section of hair into the ponytail, push the hair up from the hair band gently to increase volume and really create that catwalk look, recently seen in the Spring/ Summer shows. If needed add a few kirbies to hold the hair into place, I would recommend this for longer, thicker hair. Add a spritz of a firm hold hair spray all over, especially on the crown, and curl the rest of the hair gently with a hair wand or curling tong. JOICO Humidity Blocker is a great product to ensure all day wear and finish the look. It acts as a shield to seal the hair in place and prevent moisture from the air causing frizz and ruining the finished look. So there you have it a 60’s look, full of volume and guaranteed to last all day!

Rural Escape This month we pay a visit to “Thornlea” located on the Ballyhanwood Road in Dundonald.

63

64

“Thornlea” is an extensive 5000 sq. ft. family home. Occupying a private site extending to approximately one and a half acres it affords superb rural views from all aspects. Of particular note is the master bedroom with elevated views to Stormont Parliament Buildings and a large ensuite shower room offering a view over Streamvale Farm, where the deer often graze nearby in the mornings. The entrance to the property is certainly spectacular and through the doorway you enter into a spacious reception hall with a vaulted ceiling and solid cherry oak wooden floor. Set off from this reception hall are the living room with a cast iron wood burning

stove and dining room with an attractively carved Mahogany fireplace, noticeable at this point via glazed double doors. Both of these room have access to the rear hallway and the kitchen. There is also a drawing room on this level of the house with a gas fire and views of the front garden and rural landscape to the back of the property. Glazed double doors in this room open into the garden room which then takes you out to the front patio. “Thornlea” has a fitting country-style kitchen made from cherry wood and granite work surfaces. Contemporary touches are evident from the brushed steel door furniture and stylish

appliances. There is a fully fitted separate utility area. There are four bedrooms upstairs, two with ensuite shower rooms, as well as the family bathroom, a study and cinema room. A large attic room also offers plenty of opportunities in this spacious home. There is also a large snooker room to the ground floor which alternatively could be a great granny flat and a convenient guest bedroom with ensuite shower room can be found in this area of the house too. As well as the rural views all around this property has extensive lawned gardens, mature trees, flowerbed and raised planted areas surrounding the sweeping tarmac driveway with its ample turning and parking

areas to the front and side. There is also a detached double garage for parking and storage. This really is a dream home which offers something for all the family. It lies in a beautiful rural location, providing all the benefits of a country lifestyle yet is convenient for commuting to Belfast city centre and to leading schools.

Caught On Camera

Every month in association with Venture Photography, we will be catching up with a local family and seeing how they like to spend their time together.

Hailing from Holywood, Co. Down, Julie Beaumont is a singlemother of four beautiful children, Kenneth (9), Jasmine(7), Christian (6) and Sophia-Rose (5). While she is busy looking after her children, Julie is a Brand Consultant and also fundraises for a few charities.

When you are not in front of a camera how do you like to spend time together as a family?

We spend our time together at the beach walking our dogs. We love to dance around the living room when we get home to whatever makes us laugh the most. Nothing beats a Saturday morning cuddle session in my bed watching a DVD and chatting. We are lucky to be part of an active church family and enjoy partaking in the activities throughout the week and year. The girls are looking forward to their

first trip to the Nutcracker Ballet at the Grand Opera House and the boys enjoyed their first ice hockey match just a few weeks ago.

Do you have a favourite family holiday destination?

When I asked the kiddies where their favourite holiday place was there was a chorus of “Spain mummy”. We are blessed with great friends one of whom gifted us a holiday to spain last year and it was absolutely amazing. The children loved the weather, progressed both their swimming and Spanish skills, and got a taste for travelling. I think staying until they closed the gates at both Waterworld and Tivolli was probably two of the highlights. For Kenneth it would have been seeing the Buggati Veron at the Port in Puerta Banus. Due to the children being so close in age (and all so gorgeous! I know

I’m biased!) they tend to attract a fair amount of attention, this was particularly apparent in Spain and our family was made to feel very special wherever we went.

Do you have a favourite restaurant to go and eat together as a family and why? We love to eat out, so it’s difficult to pick a favourite! The Ramore would definitely be on the list, we have some great memories there and the children love the food and the relaxed atmosphere. Closer to home it has to be the Dirty Duck for relaxed casual dining and Berts for special occasions and we all eat the same there! Medium rare or as the kids call it “pink” steak and chips. Eating out is definitely a treat and I sometimes have the privilege of dining with my children individually, Kenneth and Christian are the best dinner dates ever,

69

never failing to pull back my chair or to help me on with my jacket. I have always dined out with the children from a very young age and credit their varied palate and good table manners to this.

Is there anything you’ve not had a chance to do together yet as a family that you would like to do?

There are so many things we are yet to do together as our adventure is just beginning. The kiddies are very keen that their mummy flies them in a plane some day, I can think of nothing more amazing than piloting my children and I over the Ards Peninsula enjoying the tranquility and freedom of flight. I have promised them I will do this, therefore I’d better start saving to get back in the air!

Julie, when you get some time to yourself without the children how do you like to relax?

When I get some time to myself I tend to keep quite busy. I have recently joined Jubilate, a singing group at church, which is proving great fun. I like to travel when I can, be it to Donegal or further afield when I get the chance, I’m finally getting to visit Italy later this year which has been a long standing wish for me. I’m a keen

runner and enjoy dabbling in art and dressmaking. I am blessed with amazing family and friends and enjoy entertaining them at home.

What is your most memorable moment together as a family? We have many amazing memories, and try to be quite an adventurous little team. After much discussion we have decided it has to be our camping trips where we have loved

being snuggled up in a big blow up bed with the rain pouring down and reading Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder from start to finish, and on one occasion whilst walking back along the beach from the Ramore we all took to the waves including myself up to my neck, fully clothed, the journey back to the camp site was hilarious. This spontaneous fun has created a lasting fond memory for us all.

A Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing! The Mercedes C350 Coupe Sport AMG by Barry O’Doherty

As a 35-year-old bloke I’ve seen Mercedes evolve in recent times through a number of different sets of eyes and levels of maturity. As a kid the first car I fell in love with was a beast of a Mercedes E Class Coupe AMG way back in 1994. A Mercedes in those days was the ultimate status symbol and sticking a thumping big AMG badge on it had small boys very excited indeed. Onwards to the late 90s and early zeros and Mercedes was losing ground fast to its German cousins, namely Audi and BMW and it has stayed that way to very recently, but Mercedes has left behind the reliability and old retired man issues it enjoyed too cosy a relationship with for far too long, so much so, as a young man (yes me) aged 32 I went out and purchased a Mercedes E Class coupe AMG sport thinking that was the car for me and I’d be fantastically successful just because, well, I drove a Merc! The cool hip (and second of three) Audi TTS was sold and I found myself in very unfamiliar territory. Clearly not content with the hairdresser jokes endured and delivered daily in the TT I was now driving a car I assumed, and others

motoring

echoed, was for old blokes with comb-overs. But I wasn’t, I was driving a Merc coupe something I’d dreamed about from when I first got bitten by the automotive bug. I’d arrived at the pinnacle of my motoring dreams - albeit about 30 years early! I subsequently sold the big Merc after nine months and what felt like nine million pounds on fuel and bought an Audi A5 diesel which I sold after nine months and 50p on fuel and a lot of very boring miles and bought once again a bright white Audi TTS. For me nothing has been able to match the TTS in terms of looks and performance. Until now that is. Mercedes is at it again, playing with small boys emotions making damn right sexy cars and planking AMG sports packages on them

71 achieving what some might say is a sheep in wolf’s clothing, but hey, they are stunning to look at, don’t return daft MPG and dare I say it, cool again. The new C class coupe with its chiselled grill and sleek lines and stunning interior is an eye wateringly beautiful thing to look at. As someone who appreciates the beauty of a car over the engine I’m inclined to think Mercedes have produced one of, if not thee, most beautiful Coupe’s I have ever seen - BMW’s new 6 series excluded. The engine is as expected, smooth and coupled to the 7G tronic gearbox is flawless and with the machine delivering just over 300hp this is a serious piece of kit. The coupe purists with deep pockets will no doubt argue the car is best ordered as the ozone munching C63 AMG which will kick £60k from your wallet before you stick a tick beside a single extra. That’s a whopping £20k premium on the C350 featured which to mind would be better spent in the south of France flirting with the locals. Economy is to be respected regardless of the thickness of your wallet and the entire range (according to Mercedes official figures) return really impressive numbers with the C350 cycle return of 40MPG compared to the AMG thoroughbreds poultry 23.5. That said you get what you pay for and as far as fun goes a proper AMG in my opinion sits above BMW M Cars and Audi RS cars by a country mile. The entry level C180 returns a healthy 44.1 combined but you lose all the power so it’s not a compromise I’d consider for 4MPG and a 0-60 of 8.5 seconds. So, if you’re after an “expensive look at me I’m awesome coupe”, take my advice and buy the C Class, if you can wait a while, look out for BMW’s 4 Series which having seen the press images I can say looks incredible, or if you can wait a bit longer still Audi will be launching third incarnation of the iconic TT in the middle of 2014. I have a funny feeling I’ll have a deposit on one of those in the not too distant future.

Destination unknown

This month we caught up with Pinnacle Worldwide travel consultancy to get the low down on their top honeymoon destinations. With their selection, there is definitely a destination to suit every couple!

Secluded

The Maldives are the perfect choice for love birds who can’t get enough of each other, as there is very little else to here than gaze lovingly into one another’s eyes! Take a week or two to sample fine white sand and deep turquoise water perched in a private “water bungalow” listening to the waves lap against the wood. Relaxed water sports such as snorkeling and swimming are the most common ways to spend long lazy days, but excursions to neighboring islands can also be arranged. This location certainly won’t disappoint, but with a 13 hour flight to the capital city of Malé and further boat ride to smaller islands, the seclusion is not to be underestimated.

Mellow

Barbados will come as no surprise as one of the top destinations for honeymooners looking for a slice of paradise. Although densely populated, it is advisable to stay somewhere in the south west of the island, as the airport lies in the east and noise can be disruptive. Bridgetown is the busiest spot on the island and a great place for duty free shopping, with most leaving with at lease one bottle of local rum! Accommodation here is upmarket and exclusive, the right

choice for a luxury break and there are plenty of activities such as deep sea fishing, submarine trips, and heritage sightseeing for the more inquisitive.

Luxe

For an action packed trip Dubai perfectly combines activity with luxury, ensuring a honeymoon

travel to remember. We are all familiar with the exceptional shopping, and breathtaking architecture for which Dubai has become known, but what is often overlooked is the culture and heritage that can be found in the more traditional quarter of Bastakiya, including Dubai museum and Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum House, a history and culture museum. Dubai prides itself on its luxury accommodation, and rightly so, the finest cuisine and cocktails come in sumptuous surroundings, and with an unlimited budget, some of most luxurious suites in the world can be found and enjoyed.

Glamorous

Unrecognisable from its humble beginnings as a mid-19th-century oasis for westbound wagon trains, Las Vegas has been transformed into the ultimate ‘bucket-list’ city, and what better was to see it than as a newlywed? The city is truly 24/7 with no public clocks on show with the notion that time is irrelevant. The blazing desert sun during the day makes any real activity but lying by the pool unlikely, and its certainly not the place for culture and heritage, but it is after dark that Las Vegas comes to life, millions of neon lights illuminate this desert oasis and glitz and glamour take over. Accommodation and food are what you pay for and Las Vegas really isn’t worth visiting until you can really afford it!

Tranquil

This truly is the honeymooners’ paradise! Endless white sandy beaches and the perfect mix of beauty and history, weddings are big business here. By banning chartered flights to the island Mauritius has succeeded in

73 remaining upmarket and exclusive, perfect for a romantic getaway. The overall feel of the island is relaxed and distinctly Caribbean which transfers to the food where local Creole delicacies can be sampled. Despite the relatively small size of the island, just 40 miles north to south and 25 miles west to east, it hosts some of the best hotels in the world.

Tropical

Sri Lanka is a versatile place to suit couples who may have differing tastes. Blissful couples’ massages and sipping Champagne as the sun goes down is one option, however there is much more to the island than this. Thrillseekers will be more than satisfied to climb Mihintale’s shrine-dotted grand staircase for astounding jungle views; white-water raft through boulderstrewn rivers; and cycle through a landscape of rice fields, villages and ancient temples. Even taking a ride on an elephant is not beyond reach here!

Scenic

Although only a small island, St Lucia certainly packs a punch. there is stunning scenery wherever you look, whether it is dramatic mountains, tropical forests, banana plantations, quaint – if rather ramshackle – villages or inviting beaches. Instead of being located in Castries, the capital of the island, which can be humid and dirty, most hotels are situated on the west and northwest coasts where there is a large marina, and plenty of shops and restaurants. Like most Carribean islands, there is not much by way of nightlife, but most hotels will offer local entertainment. The french links to the island can still be strongly felt, both in the place names and the the french cuisine.

Exceptional holidays. Boutique service.

Time to Dine This month Barry O’Doherty tastes the culinary delights on offer at The Parsons Nose in Hillsborough. by Barry O’Doherty

A restaurant is a restaurant is a restaurant or so the story goes. There are hundreds if not thousands on our wee island and they all provide the essentials, staff, a roof and a selection of hot food at a price you and your wallet are happy to shake on, some even pride themselves so much on service they have or haven’t given they add their own tip. But like everything in life the variables can vary and rarely do they come together as well as they did on our recent evening out to Danny Millar’s Parson’s Nose in Hillsborough. You walk into what seems like an ordinary pub with a traditional but contradictory modern feel (think stag’s head on the wall

with Grey Goose vodka as the default standard). The staff present themselves as you’d expect to find in any fine dining restaurant and seat us in the bar while our table is prepared (I’m 20 minutes early as usual), so I wait unstressed giving myself plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere. A couple of families are in having tea in what I think is the restaurant where I’ll soon be sitting and a few locals are at the bar. It’s nice; I like the vibe, relaxed and cosy. Right on time though and our drinks are moved upstairs to a busy vibrant restaurant I didn’t even know existed some 15 yards up a flight of stairs to a table overlooking the quaint Hillsborough architecture outside. It’s a cold wintery night

in January and there is something really romantic about sitting at a window looking out at sleet fluttering past. Scores of empty wine bottles adorn the walls which are testament to many great past nights and all day lunches no doubt. Before we order the courses a waiter leaves us a selection of breads, Stout wheaten and two types of focaccia with a local churned butter and a tapenade of black olive and sundried tomatoes. I’m a sucker for any type of wheaten but this was delicious. A triumph! But if anything, I eat what’s put in front of me so I scoffed a good 70% of the bread before ordering which might have been foolish. However, I had room remaining I went for the

77 wild mushroom Risotto with leaks, Mascarpone cream and Parmesan starter and sirloin with buttermilk onion rings, Bushmills sauce and The Parson’s own triple cooked chips for a main, while my wife started with the twice baked Cashel blue soufflé with sweet and sour beetroot and roast walnut dressing followed up with the parsley crusted cod that came with wild mushrooms and a potato and celeriac gratin. Everything worked. The starters both light but loaded with taste and again I initially felt annoyed for not getting the larger risotto for a main. It really was that nice. My wife’s Soufflé was as it should be, light with a really thin pastry holding it together. I think I stole a percentage of that as well when the opportunity arose. My steak was cooked as ordered medium/well, but looked more like a huge fillet than a sirloin and the triple cooked chips are highly recommended even if just to be greedy. Get them! The cod was deliciously flaky and tasted fantastic on the leaks and mushrooms nestled below and the gratin too was beautifully creamy making it the perfect accompaniment for the cod dish. The dessert menu arrived, but by then we had consumed too much so we both passed, however, this leaves a return trip an absolute must over the coming weeks where we can start at the mains and work our way forward to the sweet stuff. On this visit, I’d highly recommend The Parson’s Nose. For the food fundamentally, but I can’t finish this off without giving the staff a mention. Credit where credit is due from the front of house to the waiting staff, reminding me of an old football saying “a good referee is one you never see but gets everything right during the 90 minutes” attentive and on hand if needed yet hardly noticeable in a very busy and efficient dining room. Spread the love Claire Wilson is getting into the mood for Valentine’s Day...

I vowed at Christmas that I wouldn’t step foot in a shop until the end of January, except to stock up on the usual essentials. Yet the once the January blues set in, I found myself in the middle of Belfast City Centre, arms aching from the weight of the shopping bags I was carrying. Retail therapy - it somehow managed to crush the post Christmas blues, made the pouring rain seem less irritating, and generally - restored my smile. Needless to say, it was short lived. As I may my last stop - to a stationery shop to pick up the elusive 2013 diary I was stopped in my tracks. The pre festive array of cards, gift wrap and sparkly Christmas decorations had given

way to a sea of red love hearts, roses and soppy cards – Valentine’s Day had arrived to Belfast City Centre, a month early, on the 2nd of January. Normally, the thought of Valentine’s Day would have made my stomach churn – when I was a little younger (I’m only 23 now!) I was very skeptical, Valentine’s Day was, in my opinion, totally commercialised, a folly and a retailers dream. Things look a little different now that I’m on the receiving end of the cards, the jewellery, the dinner out or whatever else my boyfriend decides to shower me with (let’s hope he reads that!). However, I still know what it feels like to be single on the most

For a spot of romantic comedy, get yourself down to The Ulster Karma Sutra at The Grand Opera House. Last year’s Cathedral Quarter Art’s festival was a sell out success and this year it’s back in time for this cabaret is set to spice up your Valentine’s Day. Or quite simply, wine and dine at one of your favourite restaurants if you want to sneak a peek at the many Valentine’s Day offers across the city log on to our website where I will be keeping you update on all the offers this February 14th. Jacqui O’Neill & Barry O’Doherty Photography: Shelley Rodgers Photography In July 2010, while Jacqui whiled away an afternoon with her best friend, Chris Love, a phone call from Barry inviting Chris for drinks led to the newlyweds first meeting. Barry later proposed while in Dublin the following May and on 27th July 2012 (the same day the Olympics started!) the couple married with a beautiful church service followed by a reception at the Culloden Hotel Resort & Spa. The bride, bridesmaids and Mother-of-the Bride

all wore dresses designed and made by Alison Jayne Couture based on the Lisburn Road in Belfast. Jacqui’s ivory gown was complemented by the bridesmaids’ in soft pink - her favourite colour! As for Jacqui’s feet - a self-confessed shoe fanatic, it had to be Louboutins! Guests were entertained by Dave Martin and the Casino Cats as well as a DJ, with the party lasting until the wee hours! The pair enjoyed a Mediterranean honeymoon.

Eva Gormley & Stefan Curran Photography: Carrie Davenport

Eva Gormley and Stefan Curran met while working together although it was two years before they went on their first date! When Stefan proposed he put the ring inside a giant Christmas cracker. before getting down on one knee and asking Eva to spend the rest of my life with him. Their ceremony was at Ballycran Church, Kircubbin and the reception was held at The Mill at Ballyduggan, Downpatrick. Tying

in with the Wizard of Oz, Red Ruby Slippers and Christmas theme, the bridesmaids wore red Chiffon dresses with a glitter trim to complement Eva’s gorgeous champagne Sophia Tolli wedding dress, with ruby slippers! Staying with the Wizard of Oz theme, the wedding cake was decorated with ruby slippers, a yellow brick road and had a little Dorothy in a veil and lion in a top hat at the end of the brick road.

the final word

Up Close & Personal Graeme Clark was part of recording breaking pop band Wet Wet Wet and we caught up with him prior to his visit to Belfast for his first solo gig.

Who are you closest too? My family. My son Ally is 20 and my wife Beverly and I have been married 14 years.

What is your earliest memory? I remember when I was about two or three being with my grandpa watching the ships sailing by on the Clyde - going to far off places, and wondering what these exotic places were like.

What is your biggest fear?

Being onstage and playing my songs but not being able to find the tune and my band mates looking at me saying, “what are you doing?”

Relaxation is..

Being home, in amongst my people. Looking at the moon through my telescope. And no that’s not a euphemism! It’s my new hobby looking at our constellation, I know nothing about it yet but it’s a great thing to do and who doesn’t like looking at the night sky - when its clear.

What are you best at?

My wife just said to me being an idiot.....(that’s the printable version!)Well I thought I was best at playing the guitar, but apparently not, it’s maybe the bass guitar!

What do you value in a partner

All these big words like patience, honesty, compassion, respect, are the obvious places to start, and certainly companionship and compatibility has to be in there too, my wife Beverly has always allowed me to do what I want.

What will shock us? My IKEA obsession!

When did you last feel really happy?

My son Ally recently passed his driving test, he was truly happy and that made me feel good too.

What is your biggest regret?

I have a few - I think there is always regret, I don’t believe in ‘no regrets’. One that springs to mind is not

being able to share my life with all the people that made me who I am, like my father and my grandfather, that’s my selfish regret as I would like them to see how I turned out.

What would you change about your life?

If I could change anything in my life it would be to have 29 hours in the day, then I could get around to doing everything I need to do. Also have a bit more patience with everyone and not take myself as seriously as I sometimes do. That would be an improvement. Graeme Clark will play the Black Box in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter on Wednesday 1st May. Tickets are now available online at www.graemeclark.co.uk or from the venue itself and are priced £10/£11.
