Artist Adrian Margey in his Portrush Studio

ULSTER LIFE INTERIORS

‘Carrick-a-Rede Adventurers’ by Adrian Margey

Margey’s Open-Studio Weekends on the North Coast Portrush based artist Adrian Margey has been taking the art market in Northern Ireland by storm in recent years with his innovative depictions of Irish landscape, iconic landmarks, and musical traditions. Self-taught, Margey combines a kaleidoscope palette with lazy brushstrokes and expressive knife work to create his distinctive originals. His use of bold colour, strong shapes and expressive texture conjures up moods and often evokes an emotional response from the viewer. From dynamic Belfast and Dublin cityscapes to nostalgic depictions of Donegal, Connemara and the Mourne Mountains, Margey’s creations truly bring Ireland’s beauty to life on canvas. It is however the artist’s ability to capture the essence of his beloved 36

North Coast that has brought him most notoriety in recent years. So inspired by the areas landscape, Margey has moved his studio and gallery space to the seaside town of Portrush. Margey’s spacious gallery space overlooking the Atlantic houses a wide selection of his contemporary and traditional original pieces and limited edition prints. The gallery is open to the public each Saturday from 11am – 6pm throughout the year. In July and August the gallery is open Friday – Sunday 11am – 6pm. Viewings can be arranged outside of these times by phoning ahead. You will most likely find the artist at the easel and happy to discuss the work on show. For those interested in commissioning a piece, Adrian will guide you through

Ormeau Road Revival Continues with the Opening of Neptune Leading interiors brand Neptune is set to open its first Irish flagship store on Belfast’s Ormeau Road this summer, bringing with it up to 20 local direct and indirect jobs. Based in the iconic Ormeau bakery, Neptune is renovating the 5000 sq/ft. building to the highest standards. Planning permission was recently given for the £750,000 project which will see a large section of the ground floor transformed into a Neptune showroom. Neptune are among Ireland and the UK’s leading creators of quality home and interior products and their Belfast store will showcase their full collection from kitchen, dining and living, bedroom and bathroom, to outdoor furniture, accessories and lighting. 38

Fergal McAdam, also the Director of Neptune by Malone & Smyth in Co Fermanagh, found the location for Neptune Belfast in the beautiful and historic Ormeau Bakery building which dates back to 1875. “The Ormeau Road is a fantastic location and it is a privilege to breathe new life into the iconic Ormeau Bakery,” said Fergal. “The Ormeau Road area is really taking off with new restaurants, cafes and bars complementing the existing businesses. There is a real buzz and it is the perfect home for Neptune.” The brand’s popularity among discerning customers encouraged him to expand further and create a Neptune flagship store in Belfast.

ULSTER LIFE INTERIORS

UL “We have large numbers of people travelling from Belfast and surrounding areas to our Fermanagh store to access Neptune furniture and accessories,” said Fergal. “This convinced us of the need to open a fully dedicated Neptune store in the city.” Work on the Neptune Belfast store is due to begin shortly and the store will open its doors in late-summer for trading, with an official ‘housewarming’ party in early September providing the perfect opportunity to see Neptune’s new AW17 collection. “Neptune make high-end interiors products and accessories available at an accessible price point. It is a unique brand that brings high-level quality and design to a much wider audience,” said Fergal. “I love the Neptune product, I love every moment I spend in our shop and I am really excited about what we are going to do at Neptune Belfast.”

Studio G Interiors Studio G Interiors was established in 2009 by Goretta Fegan, who has built up a loyal client base through offering more than just Interior Design. With a BA (Hons) in Interior Design and a HNC in Construction, this allows her to assist clients with a wider range of services required when building or renovating their home. This was the foundation to creating her own business, which formed the company’s design ethos: ‘Connect with the client, to create a style that’s personal and create an individual design that is timeless. The company is a valuable asset for new build clients, assisting with the selection 40

of every detail required to create the dream home that the client and Architect envisage. It is also an essential process to avoid costly mistakes, and to get the selection right in the early stages to avoid disappointment. Previous clients have found that this service not only gives them more peace of mind and relieves stress; Goretta offers a friendly experienced face on site that helps clients understand, and communicate any concerns that arise and to help with finding the best solution to any problems, without compromising the overall design.

Exploris added economic benefit on a local and national level but is fast becoming an integral part of the education of our children in marine life and the environment of Strangford Lough”.

100,000 Welcomes at Exploris On Sunday 2 April, Exploris Aquarium welcomed its 100,000th visitor to the attraction since it re-opened to the public on 15 August 2016. The Tennant family from Ballymena arrived, unaware of their impending surprise to a fanfare of confetti and a very warm welcome by the Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Deborah Girvan and the General Manager Ann Moreland. They were immediately upgraded to a VIP tour experience with Victoria McCready, Head of Animal Welfare and they enjoyed their lunch in the Craken restaurant and received a bundle of gifts from the shop. Ann Moreland, General Manager of Exploris Aquarium said, “We are delighted that Exploris Aquarium is already proving to be so popular, attracting visitors from home and out of state. Reaching this milestone is a momentous occasion for everyone involved”, and she added “The operators, AEL are thrilled to have established this unique attraction in Northern Ireland, which has not only 50

She continued by saying that “Exploris is continuing to add value to the visitor experience by continuous improvement and currently we are enhancing the entrance to facilitate an improved queuing system which will no doubt assist the visitors in the coming weeks and months. Additional toilets and baby changing facilities along with the addition of our soft play area and an upgrade of the restaurant with new seating will put the visitor at the heart of everything we do. Indeed we have also added to the animation across the building, ensuring that we develop our education and conservation messaging, as well as engaging all our visitors in fun activities. Last weekend we held our first evening event with the Johnny Cash tribute night, further enhancing the offering here at Exploris, in addition to the wide range of events and opportunities in the coming months. VIP winner, Leanne Tennant said, “We were really surprised and delighted to win the VIP experience and the children have had a ball, as we never win anything! This is our first visit since Exploris has reopened and we can’t believe the new look exhibitions! The rehabilitation work that is carried out for the Seals is amazing and our children really had a fabulous time. We also loved all the tropical fish as it was so

bright and colourful and not to mention the great fun they had in the soft play area! Our lunch was fabulous and the staff are so friendly and helpful - there’s so much to do we will come back again very soon!”. In addition to the Seal Sanctuary which has rescued and rehabilitated over 500 seals to date Exploris Aquarium is also home to over 200 species and has just recently welcomed the exciting arrival of a new Asian Small-Claw Otter pup, and a fabulous iguana. fondly named Sir David Attenborough, as part of our collection. Smoking hot culinary technique ignites NI taste buds A new gastronomic experience has arrived in Northern Ireland with the reopening of Parson’s Nose, bringing exciting new smoking hot flavours, textures and aromas to the awardwinning Hillsborough dining pub. The family favourite gastro-pub reopened its doors in March with a significant £500,000 redevelopment that includes an internationally sourced Angela Bell wood-fired oven that is already proving a hit with diners from across Northern Ireland. The wood-fired oven is a centre piece in the enticing new menu that includes a range of foods cooked by Parson’s award-winning chefs. The dining pub’s highly talented team have spent nearly 18 months planning the refurbishment. Managing Director Ronan Sweeney and his team of chefs led by Chef Danny Millar have painstakingly researched culinary methods, equipment and the perfect ingredients to honour the exacting and classic traditions of wood-fired cooking. 60

New lighter additions to Parson’s menu include the carefully crafted ‘Parson’s Super Salad’ consisting of wood-fired cauliflower, pickled carrot, caper and raison, quinoa and spiced yoghurt dressing. Also to create light highquality sourdough, the unique and wellresearched bread making technique enables a simple natural reaction between flour and water over 72 hours. The Parson’s Nose has gone from strength to strength, enabling the significant investment this year. All three establishments in the Balloo Inns group, which includes Balloo House in Killinchy and Poacher’s Pocket, Lisbane, continue to grow steadily and endure critical acclaim, with all three retaining their spot in the prestigious Michelin ‘Eating Out In Pubs’ Guide 2017. Food is served daily at The Parson’s Nose from noon – 9.30pm, with later dining on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information call 028 9268 3009.

Caroline Kidd Drives the Fiat 124 Spider for ULSTER LIFE DRIVES

The Fiat 124 Spider If you thought Fiat were all about cute city cars like the Fiat 500, think again. The new Fiat 124 Spider is a sexy little convertible that takes its inspiration from the original 124 Spider sports car launched back in 1966. It’s hard not to fall a little in love with the new Fiat 124 Spider. The classic long bonnet of a roadster gives the 124 Spider a slinky profile and around the rear it’s all curves and neat elegance. There are a range of body colours, with names that will have you dreaming of holidays in Tuscany quicker than you can say ‘Ciao Bella’ – Italia Blue, Passione Red and Argento Grey are just some of the eight colours available. Inside, you are positioned low in the car and there is no other feeling that

62

compares to being behind the wheel of a convertible. It’s enough to have you reaching for that silk scarf to place around your head Grace Kelly style, and of course sunglasses are obligatory. The cabin is completely driver focused and wraps around you with plenty of softtouch materials, gloss black finishes and brushed chrome to combine for a stylish look. The range starts at £20,995 and Bluetooth, air con, cruise control, and 16” alloys come as standard. It’s worth upgrading to the ‘Lusso’ model (from £23,745) for heated leather seats and an infotainment system with navigation and a slick-looking 7” screen in the centre of the dash. Pressing the ignition switch is a joy to behold – the Fiat’s 1.4-litre turbo

petrol engine comes to life with a mighty growl. The fabric roof is easy to release and folds down neatly behind the seats. I was lucky to test the new 124 Spider in some glorious spring sunshine. With the roof down, the 124 Spider is surprisingly comfortable, and there is nothing like speeding through the countryside with just the sky above you! The 124 Spider has classic rear wheel drive handling so it floats around corners with real grace and elegance. The 140hp turbo petrol engine is a beautiful soundtrack to your adventures with plenty of power and will sprint to 62mph from a standstill in 7.5 seconds.

with plenty of power and will sprint to 62mph from a standstill in 7.5 seconds. There are few things in life that hold as much promise as a two-door, low slung, Italian sports car, and with the return of Fiat’s 124 Spider, there’s a bit of Italian passion back in open-top motoring.
