THE PERFECT MEASURE FOR COFFEE PLEASURE: Wanted.Coffee set to revolutionise UK market Every day in the UK we drink approximately 55 million cups of coffee*, with coffee being the second most popular drink in the world after water! Wanted.Coffee, a premium coffee club, is set to revolutionise the coffee experience by ensuring consumers get the perfect measure for coffee pleasure. Paul Devanney, coffee advisor to Wanted.Coffee explains how they are captivating consumers: “Making the perfect brew begins with finding the right coffee and when it comes to coffee beans, it starts and ends with quality. Small batch, single origin coffee, Wanted.Coffee’s speciality, is the crème de la crème. We source the most 20

exclusive beans which are produced in small quantities in dedicated farms in remote regions of the world. “Small batch coffees are consistently delicious, surprisingly delicate and full of unique, subtle flavours like citrus and honey. It takes real skill and experience to roast these kinds of beans properly. You don’t find coffee like this in a large coffee house. Large companies rely on similar flavours to attract and retain customers. We’re quite the opposite, for us it’s all about offering the very best in difference and choice to our customers every month.” The next step is brewing - a process that is every bit as scientific as a Heston

UL

Blumenthal recipe. The experts at Wanted.Coffee would recommend using 18g of coffee to 300ml of water**. The strictest of coffee aficionados use actual scales to measure every stage of the brewing process. The temperature of the water is also very important. A temperature of no more than 94 Celsius makes sure you won’t burn the beans and release an unpleasant, bitter flavour. To brew your coffee quickly and with little effort, the Hario V60 is perfect. Devanney explains: “A V60 is one of the most effective brewing methods because it allows you to bloom the coffee. This means that once you’ve measured the coffee, you wet the grinds with a little water and allow it to bloom for 30 seconds. During this process, you see the grinds rise up as the gas is released, maximising the taste and aroma of the coffee.”

or any flavourings. It’s like going to a Michelin starred restaurant; you don’t need to use condiments when you’ve a product that’s already perfect. This raw approach to coffee is also proven to have a positive impact on diet and lifestyle. Black coffee is very low in calories and can help boost your metabolism which can help you burn fat***. According to the Harvard School of Public Health drinking coffee is also linked with the possible reduction in heart disease, stroke and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. So, when it comes to the perfect measure for coffee pleasure, choose Wanted.Coffee and let your taste buds and your body reap the rewards. *British Coffee Association **Measurements based on an Ethiopian coffee from Wanted.Coffee ***Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base Get an extra month FREE when you subscribe for 6 or 12 months!

Bishop’s Gate Hotel celebrates its 1st birthday The award winning Bishop’s Gate hotel in Derry-Londonderry, which was unveiled as one of the UK’s top 25 rated hotels by TripAdvisor earlier this year, is celebrating its first birthday. Within the hotel’s first year of trading it has exceeded both occupancy and business targets. Ciaran O’Neill, operator of Bishop’s Gate and President of the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation discusses the initial projections and how these have been surpassed: “At Bishop’s Gate, delivering the best accommodation, food and service is our priority and we work tirelessly to provide experiences that exceed expectations whilst positioning ourselves as one of Northern Ireland’s leading destinations. This approach has paid off. Within our first year, we have exceeded the occupancy levels projected in our business plan and we are currently employing almost twice the number of people that we anticipated. We set out to create 48 jobs and we’ve created 76. “In the month of March, as we celebrate our first year of trading, we will have welcomed over 12,000 visitors. Our amazing team is committed 26

to excellence and this is reflected in the comments and feedback we receive. Visitors have described the food experience as ‘a fantastic eatery’ while the sensitively restored, exuberant Edwardian surroundings have regularly been termed a ‘fantastic overnight luxury stop’.” Bishop’s Gate Hotel ranked second in TripAdvisor’s UK top 25 rated hotels in the annual Travellers’ Choice awards just weeks before celebrating its first birthday. The hotel has also won a host of other local awards since it officially opened. Stephanie McCarron won ‘Hotel Receptionist of the Year - Most Promising Hotel Category’ at the Hotel Receptionist of the Year Awards and the team scooped third place in the ‘Hotel Restaurant of the Year’ awards, organised by NI Hotels Federation. The hotel was also voted ‘Hideaway of the Year’ in a leading hospitality guide, announced by Georgina Campbell, one of Ireland’s leading food and hospitality writers. A week of promotional activities within the hotel to mark the first birthday will culminate in “An Evening with Palais Swing Band” on Saturday 11th March 2017.

Jenna Mulholland proprietor of The Rose Lane Advanced Skin Clinic in Lisburn

Ulster Life Magazine recently got to chat to Jenna Mulholland proprietor of The Rose Lane Advanced Skin Clinic in Lisburn. Jenna returned to Northern Ireland after spending several years working and training in Australia using the DMK Skincare range and has now opened her own salon in her home city of Lisburn.

Tell us a little bit about how ended up running your own salon? I was fortunate enough to have been travelling in Australia and applied for a salon manager role in a DMK Skin Clinic. It was then that I discovered how amazing the DMK Skincare range really is. Upon returning to NI after a little over 2 years in Melbourne I realised that I couldn’t go back to working with your every day run of the mill facial ranges and decided to source a supplier for DMK and started my own skin clinic from a spare room in my house. Three years on from that and I’ve opened my own premises in Lisburn City Centre. 28

Is there a typical day and if so what might that look like? My typical day can be quite chaotic but I always try to allow for a little calm before the storm. With 2 baby boys of 1 and 2 years old my mornings consist of early starts, nappies, potties and peanut butter everywhere. After dropping the boys off to their nannies for the day I arrive at the salon around 9am to allow me time to give the place a good clean, get the treatment rooms prepared for the day and if I’m lucky, a quick coffee! First treatments are booked in from 10am and I usually use both treatment rooms to overlap clients. On a good day this will be the pattern of events from opening the doors at 10am until close at 5.30pm or 9pm depending on day of the week. If I get any spare time throughout the day I am usually as active as possible on Social media as well as partner websites and magazines promoting the benefits of DMK and Rose Lane of course! Is there a treatment you particularly enjoy? I absolutely love all of the treatments involved with the DMK range. As it’s a results driven treatment range I always feel immense pleasure in seeing the amazing results that clients experience, both physically and mentally. Treating clients suffering with stubborn skin conditions such as Acne, post acne scarring or Rosacea there is usually as much damage done to mental wellbeing as there is to the skins physical appearance so watching their journeys

UL unfold and seeing first-hand the change in personalities as much as skin appearance provides me with a huge amount of job satisfaction. If you’re forcing me to choose one particular treatment then I would have to go for the DMK Muscle Banding. After only a few treatments it can radically strengthen and tighten sagging skin, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and leave the skin healthy and glowing. Perfect for us ladies (and men) that refuse to let age take its toll. What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in the Beauty industry? I would say to think carefully about the direction that they wish to take within their beauty careers. The beauty industry in recent years has become swamped with salons, nail technicians and make up artists making it an extremely difficult trade to forge a career out of. Anyone that is passionate enough and willing to continue learning throughout their careers will have what it takes to succeed but know what you want and do what it takes to achieve it. What does the future look like for Rose Lane? Although Rose Lane is in its fourth year of trading I still view the business as being in it’s infancy. Whilst working at home and building a vast client base was a great idea and definitely the right

decision for the business it has meant that expansion in treatment range was limited. Only now that I am established in my own premises can I push forward with broadening my knowledge of the skin and the treating of it using paramedical methods. Within the next few years I intend to keep changing people’s lives through providing them with self confidence in their skin and learning as much as possible to help me do that. What do you do to relax and unwind outside of work? With having the two boys, times to relax and unwind are few and far between but when they do come around my husband and I love nothing more than getting out into Belfast for a good meal and perhaps a gin or two. Spending time with my family offers its own joys so I try to be as outdoorsy as possible with the boys. I try to make time to get to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and in the better weather love nothing more than a good trek up the Mournes.. Favourite Restaurant? Zen Drink? Monkey 47 Gin Holiday Destination? Melbourne 3 famous dinner party guests? THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET WILDE AT THE MAC Oscar Wilde’s most famous farce, is set to take to the MAC stage in Belfast this month. Regarded as one of his finest works, this humorous take on Victorian high society is arguably one of the Irish playwright’s most enduring comedies, with some of the funniest and wellknown lines of any of Wilde’s plays. A new co-production by Bruiser Theatre Company and the MAC, showing exclusively at the MAC this spring, The Importance of Being Earnest will open for a three-week run from 24 March until 15 April 2017. The recurring themes of marriage, courtship and mundane social obligations ring as true today in this punchy retelling of the classic as when Wilde first put pen to paper. Boasting some of the funniest lines in the English language, this is Earnest for a 2017 audience interpreted by an allmale cast. hing, who become entangled in a hilarious plot, forcing each to m aintain their fictitious personae ‘Ear 38

Simon Magill, Creative Director at the MAC, said: “The MAC is an organisation that champions new, innovative artistic experiences for audiences and artists alike. We’re delighted to present Wilde’s classic in Bruiser Theatre Company’s vibrant theatrical style. The Importance of Being Earnest will be a guaranteed night of entertaining fun for those familiar with and new to Oscar Wilde.” For theatre-goers seeking to embrace an added taste of the Victorian era before the show, the MAC’s in-house café and restaurant NATIVE will be offering a delightful afternoon tea spread from just £13 per person before the 25 March matinee. UL Galgorm Dental named Northern Ireland’s Dental Practice of the Year 2017

The18th Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards took place recently at the Europa Hotel, bringing to-gether the sector’s finest. This year, Pamela Ballantine, took on presenting duties, humorously guiding proceedings and entertaining the 340-strong crowd. Amongst the nominees was the freshfaced Galgorm Dental, a practice that was established as a brand new practice in August 2015. Aiming to supply all the different elements patients seek in a dentist has led to impressive subsequent results – over two thousand registered patients and six members of staff. In addition to this they can now add the accolade of Northern Ireland’s Dental Practice of the Year. “We are absolutely delighted to have won as this particular award is focused heavily on standard of patient care and quality of treatment we provide. To be recognised as the best practice in Northern Ire-land is fantastic and we have to thank our incredible team who are the life and soul of Galgorm Dental.” says Alan Crockett, Chris Gocher and Dougie Thom. 44

Dental Practice of the Year winning team, Galgorm Dental (Ballymena) with Chris Guy (Straumann), and Dr Gerry McKenna (QUB)

On the night, the practice was recognised as having demonstrated exceptional growth over the last 12 months as they have developed towards a busy mixed practice in the Ballymena area. The commitment of the entire team towards high quality patient centred care was clear as was the emphasis of com-munication of their patients. Galgorm Dental has an idyllic location at Galgorm Castle, complimentary at the door parking, open 8am - 8pm, plush interiors, televisions on the ceiling for you to catch up on Coronation Street while you get your treatment, a full range of family treatments available from NHS to cosmetic implants and 0% finance available.

Aside from all the amazing fashion on show (stripes, gingham, frills, ruffles, pink and yellow – just so you know) and the delicious West Coast Cooler cocktails from our title sponsor, there was a lot of love for our returning hair partner ALFAPARF Milano as well as our new make up partner KARAJA. Both these Italian brands were put into the hands of local make up and hair creatives and the results were outstanding. This month’s column is a catch up with the creatives for a full get-the-look for FASHIONWEEK SS17. I love a bit of a collab – and this one worked wonderfully, so roll on our shows and the very best of our creatives working together. KARAJA’s official make up spokes-artist is the very fabulous Gill McCann from Dublin who worked alongside Belfastbased Rebecca Bryson, plus four creative geniuses (Ellen Lunney, Louise Lavery, Chloe Loughran and Ursula Valentine) from Paddy McGurgan’s MAKE UP PRO store in Belfast to get all of our models camera-and-catwalk46

ready. Leading the hair team was Amy Cartwright from Paul Stafford’s salon who, alongside Shane Breslin and many other earlybirds, rose at dawn for our models. And boy did it pay off. Creative curls for the pre-launch shoot on CMPR Models’ Phoebe Tan and super simple show styling for the press launch itself.

Amy’s step-by-step for Phoebe’s shoot hair is as follows: • Blow dry the hair smooth with ALFAPARF’s Extraordinary All-in-1 Fluid and Cristali Liquidi. • Leaving out the roots, curl around a wand from the mid-length to ends in small sections all the same size. (Waving away from the face at the front) • Once the curls are cooled down set with Illuminating Hairspray. Then brush through with a paddle brush. • Using a boar bristle brush smooth down the root section with hairspray for a professional, polished look. *styling tip* Leaving the roots straight keeps the look modern and allows for a quick updo/ evening look. ie – a low editorial ponytail or a high, textured top knot.

Swede as a nut! UL drives the Volvo V90 R-Design AWD

Donald Trump was right when he warned the world about Sweden – Something quite serious is happening there right now and the world, in particular Germany, better sit up and take note. Volvo mean business. I’ve always felt that Volvo wobbled a little from the heydays of the strange yet weirdly awesome sight of the 850 R estate taking on and destroying the sleek Coupes of the British Touring Car championship in the 90’s. From then the 850 evolved to the popular V70 and various other V and S platforms which never really had the competition shaking in their boots, then along came the XC range just to remind us all that Volvo was a serious player once more.

The XC90 wasn’t initially a looker in the traditional 4x4 soccer mom sense when you measure up against the pricier Range Rover of the day or probably more suited price rivals in the Audi Q7 or BMW X5 but it quickly won huge respect across the motoring journalist fraternity with Clarkson, in particular, punching the benefits of the XC90 in to the face of anyone who would listen (don’t ask me what he did to those who didn’t listen!). Volvo was winning again. Maybe that’s another Donaldism but the Swede was once again turning heads. Then we had the arrival of the slightly smaller more compact XC60 which I always felt was by far the better looking of the XC range, that is, up to the latest

UL XC90 launched (shares an interior with the latest V90) which is just a thing of beauty, the latest Q7 and X5 don’t come close on looks and that’s also the case with the car we are discussing here today. Volvo’s V90, V depicting the Estate version and S the Saloon. I didn’t know what to expect as I’d not driven a Volvo for about 5 years when I personally looked at buying an XC60, beautiful on the outside but I couldn’t bring myself to embrace the then range wide signature floating central console so that was

"

that – Another German came my way. Thankfully Volvo have moved away from that solid but flatpack look dashboard and the latest layout in the V90 is as near perfect as you’ll find outside of the latest Porsche Panamera. One big central touch screen which is about the size of a tablet turned portrait does absolutely everything, effortlessly. Being a bloke I don’t like being shown around a review car, or any car for that matter, I know how cars work (my wife disagrees strongly with this statement) and I’ve usually read enough pre-review that I know what I’m looking for, so I like to

Probably the most intuitive system I’ve used in a car.

UL

get in and play about a little. Recently I drove a New Astra and to this day I’m baffled how anyone over the age of 16 could understand the huge number of buttons and menus. Honestly, I’d rather walk than try to begin to understand it. The V90 system just made sense. Probably the most intuitive system I’ve used in a car. This particular car was also well equipped and came with a few must have options like, a full glass roof, head up display which is a bit like reverse park sensors. Once you’ve had it you can’t do without. It’s another “cost option” box to tick when ordering but the information it throws in to your line of sight without being in the least bit

distracting is at worst essential and at best lifesaving. The car also came with the upgraded sound system from Bowers & Wilkins. I spend most of my day in a car of similar size to the V90, The Audi A7 Avant fitted with BOSE and despite my 30’s rapidly coming to an end I still enjoy pushing the volume all the way up to 11 when I get the chance. The B&W system was incredible and although a pricey option you do get some beautiful interior enhancements across the dash and side cards of the doors. It also sounded superior to the BOSE which I would have imagined was an impossible task. The ride, comfort and safety systems built in to this car kind of stump me a 61

bit. Where do we go from here? When asked 10 years ago, about Audi’s S-Tronic boxes I would have told you they ruin the enjoyment of driving. 10 years later and the thought of driving a manual seems as crazy as using a handle to lower the windows. The V90 kept me in lane, watched my speed on the motorway and braked for me if I got too close to the car in front and did so many other things that go unnoticed that it’s simply astounding. All of this you would think would dull the driving experience but when you put the big Swede in sport mode you get a huge sense of driving pleasure. The car might be almost driving itself at times but you still feel connected and involved. That’s why I feel this is probably the best executive estate car you can buy today. 62

This car is a game changer for the executive class. Simply put, you can no longer talk exclusively about Audi, Mercedes and BMW being the executive car of choice without mentioning Volvo in the same breath. This car will take market share like never before folks, Car Tested Volvo V90 R-Design 2.0D AWD 232 BHP 0-62MPH 7.2s MPG 58.6 Combined
