ummer has without doubt moved to one side in favour of autumn which is unashamedly my favourite time of year. Unlike the world of fashion the change is a gradual sweeping redesign of the landscape around us. Not such a gradual change on the catwalks of NY, London and Belfast Fashionweek (13-16th October) the bright colours haven’t so much been replaced as fur lined and as a recent trip to New York city taught me there are going to be a lot of Wellington boots sold in the coming months! If you’re feeling a little chilly in the current climate you could do worse than following in the footsteps of UL’s Spa Sleuth Cathy Martin (page 36) Cathy warms up in the spas of Gran Canaria! For those staying at home Davina Sands gives you her take on new season fashion (page 38) and UL’s very own social butterfly Grainne McGarvey (page 14) has those all important dates for your diary! Finally massive congratulations to our art expert Patrick Colhoun. Patrick recently won the Sculpture category in the Signature Art Awards in Vyner Street, London.

SPARKLING SEASONAL STYLE: Appletiser StyleFIX Set To Take Centre Stage This Autumn

B

elfast beauties are set to take away all the new season’s top tips this October as the Appletiser StyleFIX road show rolls into CastleCourt Shopping Centre on Saturday 01 October 2011. The fashion and beauty tour exploded onto the style scene last year with an all-Ireland runway show giving fashionable females a fabulous free style fix. Proving just as popular throughout 2011, Appletiser has once again teamed up with Ireland’s top shopping destinations and is continuing the StyleFIX shows in Belfast this autumn. Audience members at the event will enjoy high-impact fashion shows throughout the afternoon showcasing a whole host of the newest season’s trends on the catwalk. With a range of stylish stores, from Debenhams, GAP, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, Wallis, Laura Ashley, plus many more, there will be something to suit every style and budget. Autumn/winter 2011 will see the seventies trend continuing and the StyleFIX crew will be teaming high waisted trousers with elegant blouses for an effortless runway look. For a fashion forward twist, stylists will be adding fur, leather harness accessories and a few cuff bracelets to bring the looks bang into the new season. CastleCourt shoppers can expect to see some classy sheer maxi dresses and pleated options, the perfect inspiration for those looking ahead to the party season. Those attending will also be able to sample delicious complimentary Appletiser while receiving free advice and mini make overs from top make up artists. There will also be hair

6

professionals involved from the centre, so plenty of opportunity for ladies to get the professional look for a night out or the afternoon in town. Stylist and show organiser Cathy Martin says fashionistas will have a lot to mull over while shopping. “The autumn/winter season is now in full swing and the key trends will be easy to pick up in stores in CastleCourt. The StyleFIX shows will give shoppers a chance to see the new looks together, get ideas on what will work for them and pick up their favourite looks for the rest of the season. It’s time to fully forget the summer brights, as colours will be richer; think

Ulster Life burgundies, spice colours, warm rust, rich greens and creams. Match these shades with mannish shapes, tweeds and flat shoes for an up to date, powerful look. If you are after one statement piece to update your look, I would recommend a Peter Pan collar or a cocoon coat to stand out with style.” Denise Farrell, Brand Manager for Appletiser said: “Appletiser is a unique sparkling drink, made from 100% fruit juice and has no added sugars or colours. It is the perfect drink for ladies on the go looking for a delicious and healthy thirst quencher and an easy, tasty, way of squeezing in one of their five a day. The green Appletiser bottle will complement the rich autumnal colours and is the perfect pick-me-up as we move closer to Christmas.” Camila McCourt, Marketing Manager of CastleCourt shopping centre, said: “As a centre, we are thrilled to be involved in the Appletiser StyleFIX roadshow this year. At CastleCourt, we pride ourselves on having a wide range of stores that reach a wide audience from young, tall, petite, curvy, those on a budget and those who want to flash their cash, so the shows will have someone for everyone. 2011 has been a tough year for the retail industry, so we are delighted to be able to offer this free fashion event to show that looking super chic doesn’t have to cost the earth.” CastleCourt shopping centre, located on Royal Avenue, is home to a whole host of fashion and lifestyle retailers making it a great location for this Appletiser StyleFIX event. Belfast is a bustling urban area and CastleCourt is the perfect city centre location for a Saturday afternoon event as young and old, families and couples all frequent the popular shopping centre. The autumnal trends promise something to suit every age and body type and a free sparkling Appletiser is the perfect thirst quencher for anyone partaking in a hard day’s shopping trip. The Appletiser StyleFIX tour visited Cork, Dublin and Sligo earlier in the year, and will be calling at Blanchardstown later in the month. Look out for the dates in a centre near you or log on to Facebook at www.facebook.com/ AppletiserIreland for weekly updates.

WARDROBE MISTRESS Ulster Life’s very own Style guru is back with top tips on how to look simply fabulous whatever your dilemma! Dear Wardrobe Mistress, I consider myself to be an addict of high street fashion, I love that it’s one step ahead for trends and that it doesn’t break the bank, however, I’m looking for an outfit for my brother’s wedding next month but I don’t want to buy something from the high street shops as I would be running the risk of someone turning up in the same ensemble – fashion faux pas! High-street Heaven Dear High-street Heaven, We love mixing high street looks with designer pieces for every day wear but I agree that you should go for something special for your brother’s big day. I think the best finds will be in some of the boutiques accross NI as they will stock really exclusive and affordable pieces. There are so many gorgeous boutiques to visit – Elegance (Lurgan), Paparazzi (Lisburn), Rebecca Jane (Crossgar), Silk (Newry), Candy Plum (Hilsborough) and Sarah Jane Boutique (Magherafelt). They carry so many stunning exclusive and luxurious brands and you are sure to pick up something that will make you stand out at the wedding for all the right reasons. As well as selections of beautiful party dresses, these boutiques offer a gorgeous selection of day time casuals which would also be perfect for the day after the wedding, which these days, seems to be a big thing too.

16

Dear Wardrobe Mistress, As the weather gets cooler I’m looking forward to diving head-first into the knitwear. I love this season’s chunky and soft jumpers, but I’m not sure how to go about embracing the trend without looking like I’m ready for a day on the sofa. How can I look cosy and chic this autumn? Fuzzy Fashionista Dear Fuzzy Fashionista With the massive amount of chunky jumpers and cardis in the shops this season, it can appear to be an overwhelming sea of wool. If you want to embrace the cosy collections available, keep it simple and chic on the bottom. A great way to glam up an oversized jumper is with a pair of sleek skinny jeans on the bottom. Tight-fitting trousers in a metallic or leather fabric would create a bold contrast with your soft sweater taking your look from the sofa to the catwalk. Harsher accessories will surely edge up your comfy look too. Try chunky metallic jewellery or a high-gloss leather belt or bag to edge up your look. DKNY have a fab collection of edgy leather totes with metallic accents available at House of Fraser. The red crocodile cross-body bag, for £115, is especially bold for pairing with a jumper. Finally, avoid wearing oversized jumpers with flats to ensure you don’t take your look from fab to frumpy. If you choose to be comfy on the top, why not brave a pair of sky-high heels? Cervela Stella ankle boots, £160, are also available at House of Fraser and combine the slouchy feel of a warm jumper with a fabulously fierce metallic stiletto heel that will be sure to turn heads.

Ulster Life Dear Wardrobe Mistress, With the in-between nature of weather in the autumn, I never know what’s appropriate to wear! I love my summer wardrobe, but hate being the only one in a lovely sundress when my friends have all made the switch to cool blazers and knitwear. Can you help me find a good inbetween-seasons look that will be appropriate until winter? Stuck in the Middle Dear Stuck in the Middle, Brace yourself for some great news. Maxi dresses have been spotted on the catwalk for autumn! Designers like Max Azria and Lorella SIgnorino showed us some impressive and daring sheer maxi dresses for the coming season. While a totally see-through skirt may be a bit bold (and chilly) for you in the upcoming months, I encourage you to hold on tight to your floor-length dresses. Try adding layers like a big chunky scarf or a leather bomber jacket to add presence and weight to your airy maxi. Flat leather boots can replace your summery gladiators, and don’t be afraid to wear some heavy tights for warmth underneath. Some shops are also selling maxis in a heavier knit for winter if you would like to add some all-weather maxis to your wardrobe. H&M currently have in stock an over-sized sweater dress that hits just below the knee. It is available in dark grey, camel, and light beige, and at £24.99, it is a perfect winter staple that nods to your beloved warmer weather.

Hillsborough Oyster Festival

T

he historic village of Hillsborough came alive for the 19th annual Hillsborough International Oyster Festival welcoming in excess of 10,000 visitors to the four-day event. The festival event schedule included golfing, iron man challenge, fashion show including the crowning of Miss Oyster Pearl, a Pirates of the Caribbean gala ball, live music, marked and of course the world oyster eating championship. Three contenders battled it out for the prized trophy. Michael Ramage from Canada, Soon-OK from Korea and Dromore, Co.Down man Colin Shirlow, the current Guinness World Record holder since 2003. Colin’s record is 233 oysters in 3 minutes that he has held since 2003. This year Colin failed to beat his own personal best. He consumed 198 oysters in 3 minutes. After the final Colin admitted to feeling a little queasy but vowed to return next year with a vengeance for a record-breaker. Second place went to Michael Ramage and third place Soon-OK who admitted to thinking of orange flavoured dark chocolate while consuming her trays of the fresh shellfish. The competition was compered by Nuala McKeever and adjudicated by the Hillsborough International Oyster Festival chairman, Sean Hall, a founding member of the festival and former

34

world champion oyster eater in 1995 & 1996. After the oyster eating championship the festivities continued with live music throughout the village including a stilt-walking samba band. The Supercar dream ride event at Sprucefield Park and Ride gave members of the public the opportunity to have a ride in luxury cars by makers Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley, Maserati and concluded the four day event. Grand Spas in Gran Canaria

Ulster Life’s Spa Sleuth Cathy Martin this month takes to the Atlantic waves as she visits the spas of Grand Canaria.

Y

ou know an island has it sussed on the spa front when it has its own Wellness Association, and that’s who hosted me as I partook on a mid-season break to Gran Canaria back in May. Now, not everyone will be able to jet off for a spa break at the drop of the hat, but there are so many budget airlines flying to Gran Canaria these days, so it’s worth considering planning a treat for the chilly winter months – especially if a high season summer break was out of your pocket. Situated off the north African coast, Gran Canaria offers Atlantic waves and sandy beaches for water sports as well as excellent golf courses and some of the most amazing spas. And with average annual temperatures of around 23°C, it is ideal for a break at any time. You can make it a spa specific trip with girlfriends or take a deserving partner and let him play golf with one of the island’s pro’s while you indulge in all things pamper! Located in Agaete in the north west of the

36

island is the Roca Negra hotel – that’s black rock to you and me – and its Spa Ossidiana. This small hotel was the last stop on my hotel tour, but the first I’ll write about. With its simple contemporary décor and ‘Serenity’ wellness circuit, I had a delightful massage treatment here with an excellent masseuse who finished off my trip to Gran Canaria and sent me on to my plane ready to sleep. For those who prefer a mountain hideaway, The Sheraton Salobre Golf Resort & Spa, located in the hills above Maspalomas in the south, is super discreet with a reputation for über luxury. The hotel is a perfect setting to forget about the stresses and strains of daily life, get back to nature and channel your inner hippie, but it also houses a fabulous corporate events suite if you can persuade your boss to host your next sales meeting there. Its wellness-centre, aptly named the Aloe Spa (the Canaries are home to the wonder plant aloe vera), is located in the valleys of Salobre Golf and is devoted to fitness, relaxation and beauty. The fitness centre offers a

Ulster Life

heated outside vitality pool with hydromassage, indoor whirlpool, different saunas, nine treatment rooms and relaxation areas. A wide variety of massages and treatments are on offer, ranging from the most classical practices to new and innovative oriental techniques. Plus, if you’re with your man he can play golf while you enjoy the spa before you meet up in one of the fab restaurants for exquisite food courtesy of some of the island’s top chefs. For the older reader, the very private and traditionally decorated 5 star Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia is perfect. With an outdoor gym and intimate and relaxing spa area – plus some fabulous treatments to boot, this is the ultimate private getaway. Rooms are limited in number and very tastefully decorated and planned out. Plus its located just minutes from the beach for evening walks and afternoon strolls if full on treadmill is not quite your thing. I didn’t try it myself but the food here has an excellent reputation for freshness and flavour. For those with a family, the ideal resort is

Palm Beach, also in Maspalomas but only 70 metres from the beach; it boasts a fresh water pool located in a 1,000-year-old palm garden. It also has a saltwater pool with various underwater massage functions, a large sun terrace and a brine bath in the spa area. The spa and wellness centre have a host of treatments and pampering pools, including a Finnish sauna, bio sauna, stone bath, oriental baths, quiet zone with deck chairs on natural stone, massage room, gymnastic programme, tai chi and algae bubble bath. Just down the road in Meloneras — and not to be missed — is the Lopesan Villa del Conde Resort & Corallium Thalasso, which was out of this world in terms of facilities and treatments. This magnificent beauty oasis is located just on the edge of the sea with the glass fronted Thalasso centre overlooking crashing Atlantic waves and eternally blue skies. Like Palm Beach and the Residencia, it’s just minutes from the sand dunes of Maspalomas and yet the resort itself is so welcoming as it’s architecture is just like that of a local village, with a central square,

hanging gardens and a main hotel reception modelled on a traditional church with towers and a striking central dome. The holistic approach to wellness will leave visitors rested and relaxed after even just an afternoon... My favourites? The Sheraton for getaway luxury and amazing food and the Villa del Conde for ultimate Thalasso treats… But I only saw a selection, so check out all the spas – including the inside info on cosmetic surgery if you want to indulge and then convalesce in the sunshine on www.grancanariawellness.com

Q&A

Gareth McFarland 44

Ulster Life

Ulster Life catches up with Interior designer Gareth McFarland based at the exclusive Linen Green complex Moy, Co. Tyrone. 1. Did you always want to be an interior designer?

I’ve always had a keen interest in homes and interiors although I never actively pursued a career in design until I was 21. Seven years later and after a lot of hard work I’m delighted to have realised a life-long goal by opening Gareth McFarland Interiors. 2. How does your personal style influence your work? Ultimately, clients choose their designer because they like their style so it’s fairly obvious to say that personal style does influence your work. My job is to realise a client’s vision so it’s vital that I’m influenced by what their tastes are and incorporate these ideas into my design. 3. Your home must be like a concrete mannequin. Do you change it continually or are you happiest with continuity? I’ve just moved into my new house so at the moment it could be described as a concrete mannequin! I’m exposed to so many products that it can often be difficult to decide on which fabric or wallpaper to use. I’ll never want to keep changing it but I’ll always leave room for things to be added to my room, simple things like pictures or cushions. 4. You travel a lot. Outside of Northern Ireland which country would you happily settle in? Most of my travel time is devoted to work and it’s great to be able to get away to draw inspiration from different cities and cultures. It sounds glamorous but the reality is somewhat different. I love home, it’s got all the important people I need here. After that I’d settle for a nice holiday home on the Cote d’Azure where I’d have no problem living for six months of the year! 5. What do you do to relax? The business is only in its infancy and there’s so much I still have to do I haven’t even thought about relaxing recently! Creativity is vital, so it’s important to have one day off which is normally a Sunday. I love Sunday, especially the evening. I don’t even turn the TV on. It’s just me, a magazine and some good music. Sometimes it is worth more to me than an entire week off. 6. What car do you drive? I have a Mercedes C Class Coupe. It’s black so I’m a frequent visitor to the car wash. Someone once said to me ‘untidy car, untidy mind’. Ever since that I’m obsessed with keeping it clean – or at least putting everything in the boot!

Guests were treated to popcorn, nibbles and Pimm’s no.1 cocktails served by the infamous Penthouse Poppets who featured as part of the nostalgic documentary. Titanic artwork sets sail at Victoria Square

V

ictoria Square has partnered with Titanic Foundation to raise awareness of Titanic Belfast - the world’s largest Titanic visitor experience, which is set to launch in April 2012. The exciting new partnership has been launched with the unveiling of an eye-catching new artwork on Titanic Belfast, which was commissioned for public display in Victoria Square’s main shopping mall. The striking canvas artwork, located on the Upper Ground Level of Victoria Square, was created by local artist Deborah Malcomson in anticipation of the centenary of the Titanic’s launch next April, when Titanic Belfast will open to the public. Belfast based artist Deborah drew inspiration for the piece from a presentation held at Titanic Belfast, during which footage of the famous liner was screened. The triplicate artwork, created using oil paint on three separate canvases, pays homage to the iconic new Titanic Belfast building and the legacy of Belfast’s shipbuilding past. The central focus of the piece is a striking representation of the Titanic, which influenced the design and architecture of Titanic Belfast – its line and form incorporating elements of the Titanic bow, the White Star Line insignia and the gantries used to build the Titanic. The adjacent canvas panels depict the unique external façade of the building, which is clad in several thousand three-dimensional aluminum plates, with the iconic yellow Harland & Wolff cranes to the right hand side hinting towards the city’s shipbuilding heritage. Launching the new artwork, Hugh Black, centre manager at Victoria Square said: “As we look towards the centenary celebrations of the maiden voyage of Titanic, Victoria Square is proud to unveil this unique and striking work of art, which pays tribute to the legacy of Titanic and the exciting year that lies ahead for Northern Ireland tourism. Victoria Square is looking forward to being part of this and to working further with Titanic Foundation to bring the history of Titanic to life.” Commenting at the launch, Tim Husbands, chief

executive of Titanic Belfast said: “Titanic is something everyone in Belfast can be proud of and a key element of Titanic Belfast will be to tell the story of how its citizens made Belfast one of the most successful cities of the Industrial Revolution. We’re very pleased that Victoria Square is showcasing Titanic in theheart of the city and would encourage visitors to view progress on the building itself by taking a look from Victoria Square’s Dome.” Catherine McGinnis, communications officer, Titanic Foundation added: Catherine McGinnis, Communications Officer, Titanic Foundation added: “Over the next eight months there’s going to be a lot of interest in the City of Belfast and its people, as we build up to the opening of Titanic Belfast, and the centenary of Titanic’s tragic maiden voyage. Titanic’s story has inspired and captivated people across the world for the past 100 years and I’m delighted that it continues to do so through Deborah’s innovative piece”; In addition to the new artwork, two Titanic Photographic Exhibition Units are also on display in Victoria Square, providing shoppers with an insight into the design, fit out and building of Titanic, and its place within Belfast’s maritime history.

Patrick Colhoun A month in the art world

S

eptember, back to school and back to work with a vengeance. Heads down for what can be the busiest time of year for artists and makers in terms of exhibitions, collaborations and commissions. August started well for me as my pierced heads were the winner of the sculpture category of the Signature Art Awards in London. Each category winner is chosen for demonstrating their own unique signature style and as this competition was situated in the heart of the contemporary art scene in East London with guest judges from amongst others, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Haunch of Venison gallery, I was naturally delighted. I have some way to go though, to match one of my current favourite artists who has been all over the news recently. I last spoke about Brendan Jamieson on the subject of his wax JCB

52

buckets. Not one for the conventional, Brendan is probably best known for his sugar cube sculptures. Having exhibited all over the world, he has been commissioned by his home town of Bangor to recreate the Bangor Castle Town Hall. This comes after two recent shows, one in the Dickon Hall Gallery, and the second in the Towner Museum of Contemporary Art in Eastbourne, featuring a five metre high sugar cube sculpture, ‘Tower’, the largest sugar cube sculpture in the world, taking three and a half years and a quarter of a million sugar cubes to complete. Brendan’s work can be seen at ‘Fresh’, an exhibition at Arttank, Lisburn Road from 21st October. My main priority is my exhibition in October with Deepa Mann-Kler in Canvas Galleries. This is new for me as I have done many group exhibitions and even a solo exhibition in the early days, but this is the first two person show I have undertaken. Knowing how strong Deepa’s work is sets the bar for me and I have a few ideas that I hope to develop that will enhance my offering. The build up to an exhibition is one of the most rewarding aspects of making and the challenge to keep innovating with your work keeps you very fresh. The MAK9 event at the Ormeau Baths Gallery was the first of a series of events were the local contemporary craft sector showcases it’s talent in a number of different venues and formats. Look out for events coming up including a show in the new R Space Gallery in Lisburn. With the exhibition season kicking off in earnest, a last word about one of my favourite galleries. On the back of a very successful first ‘Open’ exhibition, anyone with an interest in art would do well to mark 22nd September in their diary as the Emer Gallery will be hosting the opening night for a major exhibition by one of Ireland's top artists, Noel Murphy, one not to be missed.

“Cash in the Cellar?”

H

ow much is it worth? To think I was on the verge of cracking open the bottle for my birthday, next week!” Believe it or not, this does happen in Northern Ireland. Recently, a bottle of inherited Champagne was opened to commemorate an anniversary, not realising the single bottle of Rene Lalou Mumm Champagne was worth over £5,000! Wine has been one of the few investment opportunities in the last few years to buck the trend with some dramatic increases in value, resulting in a very shrewd investment indeed for some lucky individuals. In the current economic climate anything making a gain and more importantly selling, is a valuable commodity and worth investigating for anyone wanting to dust the cobwebs of the Chateau in the Cellar. A recent client was very fortunate to do just that and discover a full case of 12 First Growth Chateau from 1982 in the original case, worth over £10,000. In this instance, the year was important, in that the vintages either side would be worth very moderate sums in

54

comparison. But as with all opportunities, there are better investments than others and it is never as easy as it may seem. For as long as anyone can remember Bordeaux first, second and third growths have dominated the market place for wine of exponential value. Could anyone have foreseen the value of a 2005 Margaux or a 1986 Beychevelle? The answer is most definitely no! And so remains the question….where will it end?

There have been various interviews and discussions on the airwaves on the subject of fine wine values, sometimes questioning its integrity. But is this not the case for most valuable commodities‌.if the demand is there, the price will go up. There is real opportunity to cash in on the serious demand for fine wine and take advantage of the incredible percentage increases in the

fruit of the vine. If you have or know anyone who has a cellar full of wine that needs investigation, please get it contact. I would be happy to assist with any assessment of the wines discovered and promise not to bring the corkscrew! Gavin Butterworth Senior Broker gavin.butterworth@fineandco.co.uk

q Where is The Personal Stylist Suite located? The personal styling suite is located on Level B1 in Victoria Square. We have purpose built a luxurious suite, with lots of space for clients to relax in and enjoy their shopping and styling experience. The suite is designed for individual sessions and group bookings, so clients are welcomed and encouraged to invite friends along.

q How much does the service cost? A standard two hour appointment costs £30; which includes light refreshments and complementary membership to the exclusive Victoria Square Indulge card, which offers VIP’s discount in over 35 of our brilliant stores and restaurants. A longer styling session can be arranged for larger groups, or clients who feel they would like a little bit of extra time to indulge. .

q Who does the service cater for? This Personal Styling Service caters for everyone, regardless of age, shape, size or budget. I meet so many different types of clients and help them find everything from a new season wardrobe, to one completely accessorised look that makes them feel fantastic. We adapt this service to suit individual client needs and fashion desires; catering for everything from corporate wardrobes, occasion wear, evening looks, mother of the bride outfits, or simply broadening fashion horizons. For clients who need a confidence boost in their wardrobe, or simply style direction – personal styling at Victoria Square is built around individual client needs and wants.

q What about men? Men are welcome at The Styling Suite and I’ve had excellent feedback from those who have used the service. From guys who are going to a wedding or special event and are unsure

what to wear, or if they are looking for a wardrobe overhaul to update their look – I am here to help with my brand and fashion expertise. Victoria Square have so many great male fashion brands, that shopping for men should be an enjoyable experience – not a chore and I can make this happen!

q How do you make an appointment? Appointments can be scheduled by e-mailing ps@victoriasquare.com or contacting me directly on 07850208442. Booking is then secured and paid for via customer services at Victoria Square.

q What are the opening times? Opening times are weekly from 9am – 6.00pm on Saturdays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 9am – 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays. During retail hours, I am flexible and can work around client needs to ensure they get the time that best suits them, which ensures they get the most out of their styling session.

q What are the benefits of using a personal styling service such as this? There are so many benefits. Victoria Square is such an impressive scheme, with multiple, exclusive brands, making the fashion choices endless. I understand that for some this can be daunting. Providing direction into which brand suits best should make a subtle difference. It will also provide people with the know how to shop with confidence on their own. As a stylist, my job is to help people understand how to dress for their figure and how to interpret the new season trends in ways that will make them look and feel fantastic. At Victoria Square Personal Styling, I can pull together a look, or capsule wardrobe, for clients without them even having to leave the comfort of the suite. I do all the fashion work for you!

fter 30 years of scientific research, rigorous clinical studies, ardent testing and incredible results worldwide, Capsiplex is now available in Ireland and exclusively available at Therapie Clinic, L/Derry and Queens Arcade and Cleaver House (Donegall Square, opposite City Hall) in Belfast. Capsiplex has been proven to burn-up as many calories, as an hour-and-a-half walking or 25 minutes jogging… that’s a slice of pizza or a burger or just two chocolate biscuits to you and I! By consuming an extra 278 calories per day, you would pile-on an unbelievable 25 pounds in one year! The good news is that just one capsule a day is all it takes to dramatically lose weight – fact. Weight loss is evident within one week of taking Capsiplex. Even better news, there is no need for a super-strict exercise program as you will start to burn-up calories immediately! Of course regular exercise will speed up the process further and deliver even better results, as your work out becomes more effective when taking Capsiplex. Capsiplex was launched in the UK earlier this year and sold out in a matter of hours, selling over 52,000 units and causing havoc in Harrods! In the US, top personal trainers have been recommending the weight-loss aid to all of their a-list clients and Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and even Brad Pit have all been spotted with Capsiplex! Capsiplex is 100% natural slimming aid made

58

up of Capsicum extract (chilli pepper), and small amount of caffeine, black pepper extract (piperine) and niacin. The clinically tested and approved, and entirely unique formula boosts metabolism, suppresses the appetite and helps the body burn fat and lose weight, naturally. There are additional benefits in that capsicum not only turbo charges the metabolism, it is also proven to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Niacin is also incredibly important in weight loss as it helps to release energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins so that they are better utilised by the body. Whether you simply sit at your desk and lose weight or hit the gym and burn even more calories, Capsiplex is the world’s best-selling weight-loss aid for a reason and will change how we approach weight-loss in Ireland forever. A slim, fit and finely-toned body is achievable after all? … good news indeed! To order your supply, drop into Therapie Clinic, Carlisle Road L/Derry (028 7126 5379), Queens Arcade, Belfast (028 9024 4719) or Cleaver House, opposite City Hall, Belfast (028 9043 8397) or visit www. therapieclinic.co.uk

Margey To Paint The Town Red at Halloween! Artist Adrian Margey (27) divides his time between Kilrea and South Belfast. He is currently working towards a solo exhibition of his work at The Culloden Hotel Belfast, featuring over forty contemporary depictions of famous Ulster landmarks, Irish traditional musicians and dancers. What do you paint? My work explores Northern Ireland’s landscape and musical traditions. I’m also intensely interested in the theme of ‘landmarks’ - both incidental and purposeful. Northern Ireland is rich with iconic landmarks which I love to capture on canvas. Having lived in Belfast for the past seven years or so, I feel a strong connection to the city and am fascinated by how it has changed and developed in recent years.

64

My next exhibition gives me the excuse to delve further into urban landscape painting and explore some of Belfast’s familiar sights, both old and new.

How would you describe your work? On the whole I would say my work is probably best characterised by its diversity. I use a range of techniques to create a number of quite distinct styles. I use a lot of bold colour, strong

Ulster Life

shapes, and expressive texture to conjure up moods through my work. I have used a variety of highly textured palette knife work, finger painting and lazy brushstrokes to produce this latest body of work.

Which artists have inspired you? The Irish Impressionists, the Fauves and the indigenous artists of South America have all been key influences. I think though, you are constantly influenced by the things you see around you – not just art – but good design, fashion and architecture.

Where did you train? I took quite an unconventional approach to becoming an artist. Although I studied A-level Art, I decided not to go to Art College. I was quite happy to explore and develop my artistic practice independent of formal instruction. Instead I studied a degree in Communication, Advertising and Marketing – which has been

hugely beneficial in terms of making my work accessible to a wider audience.

What are your plans for the future? After the Culloden Exhibition I have about six months to get ready for the 2012 exhibition series which will take me the length and breadth of Northern Ireland. I have also been working on a lot of commissioned work recently too – so I guess more of that will follow. I have noticed there is a lot of interest in my work from ex-pats living overseas – so I will be exploring opportunities to exhibit further a-field in the not too distant future. Lots to keep me occupied – but one thing at a time I suppose!

The exhibition opens on the evening of Thursday 27th October and runs all day Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30st October 2011. Admission free – everyone welcome. An online preview of the collection will be available at www.adrianmargey.com from Monday 24th October. For more information, telephone 07841593762 or search Adrian Margey Art on Facebook.
