KATIE PROVES SHE’S THE PERFECT STOCKING FILLER

N

orthern Irish model, TV presenter and ‘FHM Honey’ winner 2011, Katie Larmour, proves that she is the perfect stocking filler – in more ways than one - as she lets CITY7 readers have a sneak peek at her 2012 calendar just in time for the festive season. Katie shows off her winning looks in a stunning collection of twelve sexy but classy lingerie looks – one for every month boys! Katie plans to help her local cancer charity, ‘Pretty ‘n’ Pink’ by making a donation from the calendar sales. She said: “When I was approached to do a calendar I immediately thought to involve my local charity, Pretty ‘n Pink. I really wanted to help this small and independent charity, not to mention having an excuse to wear lots of pink! I’ve been involved with the charity before at Belfast FASHIONWEEK and I’m thrilled to be doing something for them again.” Noleen Adair, Director of Pretty ‘n’ Pink, which drives awareness for breast cancer sufferers as well as helping them feel better about themselves through the illness said: “‘I am so delighted to be working with Katie on this project, I think the calendar is amazing and want to express my sincere thanks to Katie who is donating a percentage of sales to Pretty n Pink Breast Cancer charity.” The talented Belfast woman’s star continues to rise after winning titles like, ‘Miss Formula 1 Great Britain’ and presenting Cage Contender on Setanta Ireland as well as Paddy Rally on UTV for RPM. Recently she continued her role as presenter on FASHIONWEEK TV and starred in a cameo role in BBC’s comedy series, Sketchy with comedian Diarmuid Corr. Katie said: “I lead a hectic lifestyle which takes me all over the world and I’m thoroughly enjoying it – however, there’s no place like home. I love getting together with my family and friends and I’m looking forward to a traditional Christmas at home this year.” Calendars, which cost £10.99 are available to buy from Global Calendars online.

Ask the Expert

MICHAEL QUINN Michael Quinn Hairdressing, Royal Avenue, Belfast.

Since Michael opened his salon doors in Belfast city nearly ten years ago, he has become one of the most highly regarded stylists in Northern Ireland. Throughout the years he has worked with a vast clientele which includes celebrities such as The Saturdays, Mischa.Barton, and our very own Christine Bleakley. Michael has a wealth of knowledge in his field and is on hand to hear your hairdressing hitches.

Q1 Claire Hamilton: I am regularly visiting the hairdressers to top up on my blonde highlights (I’m naturally a mousey brown colour, like most women who dye their hair) but because I’m constantly having my hair bleached, I find that it looks quite dry and brittle which is worsened by the cold weather. What would you recommend that could help the condition of my hair as well as keep the colour from fading? Michael: It can be hard to achieve a shine from hair which has been bleached regularly, especially because bleach doesn’t carry with it any of the nourishing elements that you would otherwise get with a glossy colour. We would often recommend Matrix Colour Smart to our clients who ask about this. It’s a great product for adding sheen but it’s also a great protection in the summer and winter. The UV filter & antioxidants help protect the hair against harmful rays & free radicals. Another brilliant tip to prevent static in your hair is to spray this product onto your hair brush and then work that through your hair. Once you start using this product, you’ll wonder what you did without it! 8

Q3

Megan Crossey: Every day, I find myself styling my hair in exactly the same boring way I had it the day before. It’s mostly a case of not having enough time in the morning to think about a new style, but I think that if I have a few styles practised then the task mightn’t be so daunting! Are there any styles you can recommend that are quick and easy for someone like me?

Stacey O’Reilly: I wash, blow dry and straighten my hair every day and as a result, my hair has become quite damaged and I have quite a few split ends. Do you have any suggestions of ways I can condition my hair to protect it from the damage that I’m inflicting on it.

Michael: women do often find themselves in this rut with their hair, but as you say, with a practised style then it is so simple to do something a little different. A style which is really popular at the moment is the high structured bun and this is so easy to achieve when you have the right equipment. You need to invest in a bun ring; looks just like a foam doughnut! They come in different colours to match your hair, although ultimately they shouldn’t be seen anyway once it’s completed. Start by putting your hair into a high ponytail and once it’s secure, pull your ponytail through the centre of the ring. Then split the ponytail in the middle so the hair cascades over the edges of the ring. Secure with bun pins and tuck in the ends. Try it when you have time one evening and you will see how easy it is. Some buns are more dressy than others, I like this more relaxed style as seen on Lauren Conrad, for a look suitable for the office.

Michael: First of all, I would recommend that you don’t do this with your hair every day, there’s no need and as you have noticed, it will cause damage! The Sleek range in the new Matrix Total Results collection will be a good remedy for smoothing and protecting heat damaged hair. The range has a fantastic shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair type but it also has brilliant specialised products such as the Leave In Cream which gives you an easy glide when blow drying and the Iron Smoother will protect the hair in up to 400˚.

Mexican Moustaches made for a moreish mark down

W

ith the facial hair growing campaign ‘Movember’ just finished and men’s faces returning to normal, local Mexican food chain Boojum is toting up the final amount they raised in support. Boojum decided to support the now-annual phenomenon that raises money and awareness in support of men’s health issues, by agreeing to treat the ‘Mo Bro’ supporters of Belfast to a bulging Burrito for only £3 on 30th November. Boojum invited both male and female supporters to wear the chain’s handy cut-out Mexican style moustaches, which were available by signing up to the Boojum Movember campaign on Facebook, to benefit from the discount. Although Boojum knows the diners of Belfast love a good giggle, there was method in the madness, as the popular Mexican fast food restaurant is giving the total £730 raised to Movember. Movember is a worldwide phenomenon which sees men growing and grooming their upper lip hair in the month of November, in order to raise awareness, talkability and funds for health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer, and last month’s seemingly jovial activity highlights a serious issue that affects many lives, yet is often ignored in conversation. Husband and wife team, John and Karen Blisard, opened the first Boojum in December 2007. After moving from America to Ireland and searching 10

CITY7 MAGAZINE ISSUE 5

unsuccessfully to find a satisfactory Mexican restaurant, the American husband and Northern Irish wife took the plunge to open their own. Boojum is now a cult culinary experience for many and the restaurant owners masterminded the Movember campaign to encourage its fanatical fans to think about a few important issues which may not normally crop up in normal tea time chat. John felt passionately about starting the campaign, explaining, “When my wife and I first opened Boojum, we never even dreamed that our favourite food could become so popular! We have so many loyal fans, for whom we are truly grateful, and we feel privileged that we were able to connect with them on really important issues such as the Movember campaign. Everyone is affected by cancer in some way, whether it is a family member or a friend, so it is a topic that is really personal to a lot of our regular customers and we are grateful that, together, we were able to raise a substantial amount of money for such a worthy cause. Plus, it’s not every day you get to stick a fake moustache on for dinner, so we hope our fans enjoyed channelling their inner Mexican!” The Movember Campaign took place on the 30th November at Boojum stores on Chichester Street and Botanic Avenue. For more information and updates on Boojum visit facebook.com/boojumbelfast.

Coca-Cola’s annual designed Driver Campaign goes live

M

iss Northern Ireland herself Fiona Guinnane helped launch the 2011 Coca-Cola Designated Driver campaign, an award winning initiative which aims to reduce instances of drink driving and promote safety at Christmas. Safety-conscious designated drivers in Northern Ireland will have something extra to smile about with the news that more than 250 pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants will be giving away free non-alcoholic beverages this festive season, courtesy of Coca-Cola. Pictured at Belfast’s Custom House Square in a winter wonderland setting straight out of the classic Coca-Cola Christmas commercial, Finola said: “Christmas is one of my favorite times of year and I’m really looking forward to meeting up and enjoying nights out with my friends and family. The Coca-Cola Designated Driver campaign is an excellent idea and I’ll certainly be availing of some drinks on the house, when playing the role of

designated driver this year”. The 2011 Coca-Cola Designated Driver campaign went live on Monday 28th November until Sunday 1st January 2012 and is supported by the PSNI, Pubs of Ulster and the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation. Kylie Dunlop, Marketing Manager, Licensed Trade, Coca-Cola HBC Northern Ireland, said: “Christmas is about giving and celebrating and through the Designated Driver programme, Coca-Cola is delighted to offer free soft drinks as a tangible reward to consumers for volunteering to be the designated driver on fun night outs this festive season.” The campaign’s website www.designateddriver. ie provides a full list of participating licensed outlets across Northern Ireland. This year, for the first time, designated drivers will be able to download their free drinks vouchers before they visit the venues via the site or by scanning the QR code featured on outdoor advertisements.

Behind Bars

This Month: Rossa, 21 Social

Belfast’s 21 Social continues to guarantee one of the best nights you’ll have out in Belfast. Winner of huge number of awards from opening as well as being one our favourite places to eat in the City. This month bar tender Rossa tells CITY7 why 21 Social is the socialites sanctuary.

Behind Bars 21 Social has been a massive success from opening, what’s the secret? Great customers and a great team to work with. Having 3 completely different floors is also great as we offer so much under one roof. I’ve been needing to know this from 21 opened! Why 21 Social? What’s it mean? Not too many people have worked it out but there is a Prohibition theme that runs through 21 Social – 21 comes from the 21st amendment which actually legalized booze back in the 20’s, the 18th amendment criminalized it but we prefer to celebrate the 21st!! Our members bar is called Cigarette Girl after the girls who sold the tobacco in the Speakeasies…

Before taking up your role at 21 Social, where had you worked previously? Radisson blu for two years 2 most famous people you have seen in 21 Social (1 local 1 international) Rory McIlroy / Bruno Mars You’d not be a great bar tender without a few stories to tell. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen in a bar? I have a customer, bartender confidentiality agreement – so your secrets are safe with me!! Best bit of advice you’ve ever been given? Work hard play hard

Its nearly Christmas time, we’re new in town. Take us on a pub crawl. Where do we go? Start off in Lavery’s for a game of pool then head to the Cathedral Qtr (why go anywhere else?) – probably John Hewitt, Duke of York, Spaniard and finish in 21 Social where hopefully Ghost would be playing!!

This Month CITY7 talks to the Duke Himself! Where can we catch your through the week in Belfast?

Is there any big tunes out there at the moment that our readers might not know about?

It all kicks off on Tuesday with the mighty, ‘Craics 90’ in Box Nightclub with Jon Boi. Then I head over to Thompsons for ‘Funkarama’ on Wednesday’s & ‘Switch’ on Thursdays. The weekend begins with Mono on a Friday & then back to the Box for Saturday.

For commercial music fans, definitely look out for Drake’s new album; ‘Take Care’, there are some great collaborations with the likes of Rihanna, Nicky Minaj & Lil Wayne. For underground fans that are looking for something a bit different, check out ‘The Saurus - All I Know is That’.

With such a busy schedule is there such a thing as a typical day? It’s hard to maintain a typical routine when you’re only getting it at 3 or 4 in the morning. I suppose most of the day is spent online, downloading music or putting mixes together for my shows on Skank FM. As you just mentioned, you’re on Skank FM every week. Tell us about your shows & how you got involved with the radio. It all kicked off this time last year, my friend and fellow DJ, Jon Boi was doing his show on Skank & I asked if i could get involved too. One year on & I have two shows every week. You can catch me on a Monday from 6-8 with ‘The Breakdown Show’ which plays a range of music from rock, electro, dance & R’n’B. On a Thursday it’s all about R’n’B for two hours from 7-9. Check it out at www.skankfm.com

Is there anything you’re working on at the moment or any special events coming up in Belfast? I’ve just finished recording my first music video for my mixed tape, which is available on my soundcloud. The video will be posted all over my Facebook & Twitter pages in the next incoming weeks. I’m really excited about hitting up Sense in Cookstown with DJ HIX for High Five Mondays on the 19th December.

ICE COOL PARTY CELEBRATING MTV EMA’S IN STYLE W hile the Odyssey Arena erupted with rapturous applause as the MTV European Music Awards got underway last night; less than a mile away, Ten Square Hotel was hosting the party everyone else wanted to be at – the Ice Party. The Ice Party, supported by Coca Cola, Becks Vier and Bacardi, was attended by hundreds of partygoers from all over Northern Ireland who gathered to celebrate the country’s biggest ever extravaganza. Kevin Smyth, manager of Ten Square, said: “The whole of Northern Ireland was in party mood last night and we were there to celebrate along with everyone else. “Our exclusive Ice Party had a live link-up to the Odyssey Arena and our VIP guests lapped up every minute of the star studded awards ceremony, which showed the world that Belfast has what it takes to throw a party.” For the last three days EMA has been one of the most talked about online subjects worldwide, further reinforcing the magnitude of the event and how important it is to the city. Niki MacCorquodale, Becks Vier Brand Manager said: “We wanted to throw a party to rival any happening in Belfast last night. “The atmosphere at Ten Square was electric as the EMAs began and the larger than life stage and glitter ball in the Arena got cheers throughout the night from our guests. Ashley Douglas from Bacardi added: “The eyes of the world were upon us and even though the likes of Justin Bieber and Lady GaGa were in town, the biggest star for me on the night was the city of Belfast.”

Kylie Dunlop, Trade Marketing Manager Coca Cola said: “As the mega stars, crew and journalists who came for the awards make their way back to their home cities today, we hope they will spread the word about our wonderful hotels, rich heritage, excellent food and our warm people and that they come back to visit us. “We have shown that our infrastructure and tourism bodies can cope with one of the biggest events in the world and hopefully it won’t be too much longer before we are hosting another one.”

Magic & Sparke

on the Lisburn Road as Swarovski frames arrive in EK Eyewear

G

litz, glamour and sparkle are in the forefront of the mind in the lead up to Christmas so there’s no better time than now to announce that the fabulous exclusive Swarovski Eyewear collection, including optical frames and sunglasses, is now available in Belfast from EK Eyewear on the Lisburn Road. Swarovski’s faceted crystal has become a guarantee of unique brilliance and a promise of ultimate sophistication. Swarovski jewellery, bags and accessories have brought the magic of glittering Swarovski to the international fashion scene, and the addition of glasses and eyewear is the perfect complement to these stylish lines. According to Nathalie Colin, artistic director at Swarovski, “they constitute a fashion statement in their own right”. The optical collection is soon to become the latest in must-have accessories with even greater femininity and elegance. It marks a continuation of the glasses theme and infuses its pieces. “Unlike sunglasses, where a touch of whimsy and exuberance are permissible, optical glasses demand more sobriety. But that need not limit our creativity – quite the contrary. It was exciting to adapt our language and help women to take in hand an accessory that some still see as an encumbrance rather than a chance to express their personality,” continues Nathalie Colin. “We’re delighted to be the exclusive stockists in Belfast of what is an incredibly exclusive brand”, exclaims Eavan Kennedy of EK Eyewear. “The Swarovski range is just stunning and with a diverse

22

CITY7 MAGAZINE ISSUE 5

selection of styles and colours; classic black, chic tortoiseshell, bold red, and sophisticated touches of mauve, there will be something to suit every woman and a set of frames would definitely be the perfect gift on a glittering wishlist this Christmas.” Swarovski has refreshed its approach with this collection by discreetly imparting the quintessence of its universe and opting for subtle reminders of its roots rather than a more opulent use of crystal. Swarovski’s distinctive identity is present throughout, as the iconic Swanflower® motif, coloured crystals and of course the facets which adorn the frames and arms, recall the precision and finesse of cut crystal.

School

… s e v a h of S If you prefer a hair free chin (or at least your girlfriend does!) as opposed to a wild, unruly beard, then I am almost certain you will at some point have cursed the chore that is shaving and the time consuming and sometimes unpleasant side effects that it brings. Well fear not, Jacks is here to offer up some simple but helpful hints…

those razor burn rashes and missed patches! Allow an extra 10 minutes and you could look like the hunk on that advert! 3. Brush Up

1. Preparation is key

Blunt blades is your first big no no! Make sure you’re stocked up with all the right equipment before you start. Clean your blade after every use and replace after 3 shaves. Always shower before you shave as the heat will help to open the pores and soften the skin for a smoother more effective shave. If you suffer from in-grown hairs then use a suitable exfoliator product before you shave to soften up the bristles and help release any trapped hairs.

5. Apply the finishing touches

It may seem old fashioned but investing in a good shaving brush can help you to achieve a superior shave. Brushing also helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of your face, ensures that the cream covers every part of the area to be shaved and if you use a circular movement it also lifts the beard away from the face, making it easier to cut and giving a closer shave. At Jacks we recommend men-u’s synthetic premier shaving brush. The bristles generate an amazing amount of lather, require less shaving cream, rinse easily and dry extremely fast, making it much more hygienic than animal hair. 4. Purchase from the professionals

Using an anti-bacterial face wash after you have shaved is one of our top tips. It will cleanse the pores and remove all the shaving residue to help avoid that dreaded shaving rash. Men-u’s healthy facial wash has a high concentration of tea tree oil and is ideal to help cleanse and protect from spots and shaving rash. Also included is witch hazel for its soothing, healing and astringent properties. Wash your face with cold water to help close the pores and finally don’t forget to moisturise! Keep your face young looking, wrinkle free and soft to the touch with this simple daily task. Men-u’s facial moisturiser lift soothes and moisturises post shave and has mint & menthol to cool and refresh. 6. Leave it to the experts

2. Take your time

It is most men’s routine to crawl out of bed, peer through a half steamed up mirror, stick on the first product that comes to hand, drag the disposable razor across their face and stifle a scream to finish when they slap on the aftershave! A good shave is never rushed and a little time and tender loving care in your shaving process will greatly improve the finished look and avoid

Essential Belfast city sleuth Grainne McGarvey reveals her essential list of what’s hot this month... HO HO HO HOG BURGER Despite the miserable winter weather one of my favourite festive things is the return of the Christmas market in the ground of the City Hall – open until December 19. A Hog burger washed down with warm apple cider and finished off with Dutch pancakes is the perfect way to heat up on the cold nights. Without being a festive scrooge, my only negative is the price which I think is very high. However as it’s only here once a year I guess it’s worth saving for.

Bespoke Belfast www.bespokebelfast.com can help you plan hotels stays, shopping trips and sporting adventure breaks. It’s up to you whether you bring your family or leave them behind to enjoy some time on your own!

MODEL BEHAVIOUR I’ll be suitably single and ready to mingle when ACA hosts its infamous Model of the Year Christmas party. This invite only event is one of the chicest of the festive season as some of the most beautiful men and women enjoy a night of fun and frolics. Last year’s do proved eventful as it was the night that Alison celebrated her engagement announcement to Darren Clarke (and the humdinger of an engagement ring!). Goodness knows what the blonde bombshell has up her diamante sleeve for this year but I can’t wait to find out! 28

FESTIVE FASHION AT DV8 I’m in love with DV8’s new Christmas fashion range as it has just the right amount of bling without making me feel like a sparkly bauble on top of the Christmas tree. This fab leopard print dress pictured is a snip at £27.99 and the show stopping red shoes cost £39.99 which means I’ll still have plenty left over to hit the town to show off. THE LADY BOYS OF BANGKOK It was glitz, glamour and surprises galore as the Lady Boys of Bangkok returned to Belfast’s Custom House Square with the latest production, ‘Fur Coats & French Knickers’. The show, which had a 2 week spell in Belfast, introduced 16 of the world’s most beautiful showgirls – who just happen to be men – in a show stopping performance with a mixture of comedy, cabaret and raunchy capers. Unique performances came from outrageous ladies of pop Katy Perry and Lady Gaga as the ladies showed off a glittering array of designer-inspired, hand-sewn outfits and infectious choreography.

BEST FOOT FORWARD AS DUNE OPENS IN VICTORIA SQUARE

Hugh Black, centre manager, Victoria Square and Zoe Brooks, head of retail, Dune, which has opened its largest standalone store in Northern Ireland in Victoria Square.

T

he chic new Dune store, located on the Upper Ground Floor at the Cornmarket entrance to Victoria Square is the largest of the brand’s retail outlets in Northern Ireland. Driven by an ethos of offering ‘affordable luxury,’ Dune has grown, since its establishment in 1992, to become one of the UK’s leading footwear and accessories retailers. The bright, spacious Victoria Square store features the largest collection of Dune footwear for men and women anywhere in Northern Ireland. Dune is the latest in a number of big brands to launch in Victoria Square in 2011, with fashion retailers Mexx, USC, Bank, Guess, Mimco, watch retailer Swatch and restaurant Wagamama all opening within the scheme in the past twelve months. The opening of the new Dune store follows very strong performance from Victoria Square in 2011 to date. Against a backdrop of declining retail 46

CITY7 MAGAZINE ISSUE 5

sales across the UK, Victoria Square is reporting a 4% increase in footfall on 2010 levels and a 3% increase on 2010 sales, as of October 2011. Both footfall and sales have been up every month on last year, except in October.* Welcoming Dune to Victoria Square, centre manager Hugh Black said: “Victoria Square hosts a diverse range of leading brands and the opening of the stylish new Dune store will greatly add to our exciting fashion offering. We are thrilled that Dune has chosen Victoria Square as the location for their largest standalone store in Northern Ireland. “Victoria Square’s 2011 performance to date shows encouraging increases in both levels of footfall and sales on last year. As we approach Christmas, we are optimistic that Victoria Square and its retailers will trade well this year; providing the weather holds and we don’t have a repeat of the snow experienced last year, we expect our upward trend for both footfall and sales to continue in December.” Commenting on the launch of the new Dune store in Victoria Square, Zöe Brookes, Head of Retail for The Dune Group said: “Dune is proud to launch its fantastic new standalone store in Victoria Square. We feel that this is the ideal location for our brand, which, with its ethos of offering customers an affordable luxury experience, is the perfect fit with Victoria Square.” “Our first store opened in Northern Ireland in 2002; and over the last nine years, Dune has established a very loyal customer base. We are very excited to continue to invest in and develop the brand, in Northern Ireland with the opening of this high profile new store.” To celebrate its launch in Victoria Square, Dune is offering customers an exclusive 25% discount to all full price merchandise this Thursday, 1st December 2011 when they visit the store on the Upper Ground Floor of Victoria Square. Christmas, apart from obliviously being a time of great religious celebration, is the only real chance we get to spoil ourselves during the year without feeling too bad about it. Now, I know CITY7 tech normally looks at ways to save money via the latest App or trusty website but we feel it only right to counterbalance the other 11 months with a one off Christmas wish list of some of the finest gadgets available today. From Apple to Olufsen here are the top 7 pieces of tech no man should be without! Merry Christmas!

.Panasonic 3D The viewing experience has never been so lifelike and compelling as it is with Panasonic’s 3D Technology. The fast switching phosphors used in the Neo Plasma panels and an original light-emitting process minimise crosstalk (double images) to deliver clear 3D images and ensure comfortable viewing. This technology also helps to improve 2D picture quality. – Those are the fancy words of Panasonic. We tend to agree having tested one and would also add the set looks fantastic and lets me honest we all probably substitute a little picture quality for the look and feel of the machine. This one isn’t cheap. In 65 inch guise you’re staring £4k in the face! 54

. Kindle The mark 1 kindle so to speak left us feeling a bit cold. It did exactly what it was supposed to do but we still felt the book was a nicer place to be. The newest Kindle has Holds 3500 books, it’s lighter than most paper backs and of course comes with free 3g wireless and built in wifi opening the device up to a whole new world of capabilities. Costing around £40 more than the first Kindle at it is a no brinier! An impressive 500GB hard drive giving you more than enough space for music, photos etc and a HD camera offering crystal clear video calls. Navigation is pin sharp and the OS X Lion operating system is very slick. Overall a beautiful machine but an expensive one when you look at some of the offerings from the world of lap tops. Beautifully expensive! Expect to pay around a grand and a lot more with software.

are the cheapest offerings on the page this month. If you love your music then pay the £100. Simply stunning sound and external noise is all but gone.

Bang & Olufsen’s famous ‘Form 2’ retro Headphones have been given a stunning colour makeover. You can choose from orange, red, yellow, white, and black. Priced at £100 the

Whether exercising in the gym or enjoying the great outdoors, Bang & Olufsen’s A8 Headphones stay comfortably in place at all times thanks to their unique ‘spectacle’ design. Extremely robust and available in a range of vibrant colours. Price £120 – Again if you are passionate about music and need the “beats” while on the treadmill these lightweight ear phones are a must. Slightly more expensive than the Form 2’s but they are a little more specialist!

One Punch Awareness campaign launched by Police Service The Police Service of Northern Ireland today (Thursday 29 September) launched a new poster awareness campaign to raise awareness of ‘One Punch’ attacks. The campaign aimed at young males aged between 18–25, highlights the risks of getting involved in an argument or fight which could ultimately lead to serious injury or death. Speaking at the launch of the One Punch initiative, Detective Chief Inspector Karen Baxter said, “Our figures show that over the past seven years (2004 – 2011) 18 people have died as a result of one punch attacks and many more have been seriously injured. With just one punch, lives have been destroyed and families lives have been wrecked. “The majority of these incidents are fuelled by alcohol and can have a devastating impact a victim, their family and for the offender, who will likely face a murder or manslaughter charge and have a criminal record for the rest of their life.”

Dr Russell McLaughlin said, “I have been treating the victims of injury for many years and unfortunately I am all too aware of the potentially fatal consequences of a single blow to the head. This campaign has the potential to save lives and prevent disability in young adults who unfortunately tend to be the victims of serious injury and assault.” Supporting the campaign Chief Executive of Victim Support NI, Susan Reid said, “We see the consequences of these thoughtless acts and we understand how far-reaching the impact can be for victims, their families and friends as well as people who witness the incidents. We wish it didn’t happen but if it does we are here to help people with support, practical help and any information they need.”night with rowdy parties, nor do they want to have their property damaged. Have fun without spoiling it for yourself or others.

DCI Baxter added, “Raising awareness of One Punch is timely given the number of students and young people who are embarking on a new term at college or university across towns and cities in Northern Ireland. As Halloween and the festive season approaches it is a very busy time socially for people – our message is to enjoy their night out, but most importantly - to stay safe.” Endorsing the initiative Clinical Director for Emergency Care for the Belfast Health Trust 56

CHA HAN This wagamama classic is a real satisfier; you can find the recipe in ‘the Wagamama cookbook’ or be naughty and rip the page out. We recommend the book though as it’s stuffed with dozens of cool recipes from the Wagamama Kitchens. What you need...

• • • • • • • • • • • •

2 eggs, beaten 200g (7 oz) boneless, skinless chicken thigh meat 2 tablespoons yakitori sauce (see recipe) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 8 cooked, peeled prawns 2 tablespoons canned sweetcorn, well drained 2 tablespoons mangetout, finely sliced 75g (3oz) cooked thai fragrant rice 4 button mushrooms, finely sliced 2 spring onions, trimmed and cut into 2.5cm (1 in) lengths salt 2 tablespoons light soy sauce

How you’ll do it Combine the chicken and the yakitori sauce in a bowl. Work gently with your fingers for a few minutes, turning the meat in the sauce. Marinate for at least 30 minutes (1 hours is even better). Remove the chicken, reserving the marinade, and cut the meat on the diagonal into thin slices. Heat a wok over a medium heat for 1-2 minutes or until completely hot and almost smoking and add the vegetable oil. Add the prawns, sweetcorn, mangetout, mushrooms and spring onions along with the chicken and stir fry over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until the vegetables just start to wilt and the chicken is cooked. Add the egg and continue to stir fry until it is just scrambled Add the rice. Season with salt and soy sauce and continue stir frying until everything is mixed evenly and the rice is heated through. Divide between 2 bowls and serve with miso soup and pickles. If that don’t satisfy ya seek medical help! 72
