Polisie deurbraak Dwelmhuis in woonbuurt

Hy was sedert 2004 by EMS werksaam. City’s water supply under severe strain >> Dap Naude line burst and damage at Olifantspoort plant >> High lying areas without water BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com The pipeline supplying water to the city from Dap Naudé Dam has been shut down to allow repairs due to a burst suffered by the line, while at the same time, a damaged cable in the transformer yard at the Olifantspoort water treatment plant resulted in power failure thus putting the plant out of operation. This resulted in reservoir levels being low irrespective of the water being pumped in. Tidimalo Chuene, Marketing and Communications Manager of the municipality, says that the low reservoir levels and continued high

usage may result in high lying areas like Flora Park, Serala View, Ster Park, Seshego and the inner city being without water or experiencing shortages. “Residents and members of the public are urged to use water sparingly in order for the reservoir to remain stable, whilst repairs are continuing at the pipeline. The community is urged to limit water consumption to immediate household needs and avoid irrigation of gardens, filling swimming pools and washing cars. The municipality is committed to ensure that the pipeline and cable are fixed as soon as possible to ensure adequate supply of water to all,” says Chuene. Residents affected by shortages as a result of low levels, may report it to the municipality at 015 290 2376/2001/2002 to facilitate the proper deployment of water tankers to the affected areas. Despite several requests, the municipality on Tuesday and Wednesday, failed to provide the reservoir levels at time of going to print.

Substation upgrade to affect electricity supply BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com Consumers of electricity in the city may face load shedding today (Thursday) as the municipality and Eskom intend undertaking major maintenance works to upgrade the Silica electricity substation to capacitate it to carry more load that will ensure that the city has a firm and stable supply at all times. According to Tidimalo Chuene, Marketing and Communications Manager of the municipality, this is a necessary process to allow Eskom to energise the new transformer at Silica substation that will supply the Municipality from a new bus-bar. The upgrading of this substation will be conducted between 06:00 and 18:00 and will affect the supply of electricity. “The process of upgrading the facility would normally require for a bigger part of the city to be shut off over the duration of

the maintenance work. To avoid businesses and residences being shut off for a longer period, the municipality will implement a stage 3 shedding schedule during the period of maintenance. This will ensure shorter periods of down time. The substation was constructed for purposes of providing electricity during 2010 and it is now upgraded to create a second supply point to strengthen supply to the city area,” says Chuene. The municipality advises members of the public and residents to switch off their electrical appliances and geysers during this period in order to avoid damage. Any open wires should be considered as live. The stage 3 shedding schedule is available on the municipality’s website: www. polokwane.gov.za. For more information on the schedule, the municipality may be contacted on 015 290 2490.

Briewe / Letters School Governing Bodies elections

ANONYMOUS WRITES: “Some were dressed to impress, others came in shorts and tekkies or just plain work clothes. That was the fashion criteria at this year’s school governing body elections. It looked like the Serengeti. Lions, hyenas, buffalo and even innocent little zebras are all coming together in groups; discussing tactics. It was also the most open public display of teachers gossiping about parents, in particular the nominated parents. Who should be part of their world for the next three years? Who will make the biggest impact and who will not let the school down? When you observe all of this you can only try to understand the importance of school governing bodies. Is it a fashion statement, the next step for you in climbing the social ladder or really about making a difference? If you are one of the many nominated par-

ents in this country and you truly wish to take your school to the next level, the hope is that you were voted in. If not, do not let your talents die or go to waste. Be actively part of school life and in what happens there. There is an urban legend about a so-called Difficult Parents List at each school; those who dare to speak up, those who dare try to bring about change and those who want a brighter better future for their children. If you made this “list”, feel fortunate. Everything you do from now can only impress the school, even if this is not your goal. To all the school governing bodies out there: be the change we need in today’s society to uplift our children. If you are in the fortunate position that your school is doing well, reach out to other school governing bodies to uplift and raise the education bar all around. Happy governing.”

he Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) is well on track with the delivery of housing in Bendor Extension 100. During a media breakfast hosted on site by the department last Thursday, MEC Makoma Makhurupetje confirmed their resolve and commitment in addressing the overarching triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. “Our government is committed to overcome all the obstacles hindering housing delivery by engaging constructively with all relevant stakeholders and to develop and strengthen strategic partnerships with all role players in the human settlements delivery value chain. The contextual realities of any locale must therefore be central to any consideration regarding the desirability and form of housing options. The dynamic nature of our department requires us to comprehensively address the overwhelming needs and expectations of our downtrodden people. Given the magnitude of the housing backlog we are experiencing, collective efforts are needed to radically transform the socio economic landscape of our province,” Makhurupetje said. Referring to the housing development in Bendor Extension 100, she said: “We take this opportunity to thank our strategic stakeholders who made it possible for us to be witnesses of this epoch making event of realising the clarion call in the Freedom Charter which assert that there shall be shelter, security and comfort for all. The availability and access to these services have a potential of restoring the dignity of people and as servants of the people we must deliver on each and every one of them without fail or excuses. “This is what Madiba would want us to do. He delivered freedom and it’s time for us to deliver these basic services,” Makhurupetje said. The MEC took the opportunity to congratulate the newly appointed Limpopo Housing Tribunal which is appointed to harmonise relationships between landlords and tenants and the Housing Advisory Panel which must advise the Department on viability of all housing development plans in the province. Salim Ayob, Director of Mabone Building Contractors, who is responsible for the building of the housing units, told guests that 661 units will be built at a rate of 20 units per month. There will be seven different styles of units that will include one, two and three bedroom units with one or two bathrooms. Stand alone units, double story apartments and rental units will also be provided. “Bendor Extension 100 will be a security complex with a body corporate,” Ayob concluded. SACP intervention to benefit elderly mother, neighbours YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com An elderly mother of four and her neighbours stand to benefit from the intended intervention by the South African Communist Party (SACP) offered to her humble dwelling during a visit to Greenside Extension 44 on Friday afternoon. Leadership, members and supporters of the provincial party structure and that of its alliance partners were in the neighbourhood for a provincial memorial of Moses Kotane and JB Marks, whose remains were recently returned to South Africa, held at Greenside Primary School late afternoon. Prior to converging at the hall on the school premises, they first took part in an outreach programme that provided for visits to households requiring intervention and home-based care and drop-in centres in the immediate surrounds as well as Extensions 71, 76, 78 and Disteneng.

In the bare space outside Railo Chuene’s meagre one-bedroom shack on a stand along a winding dusty path about a block from the primary school, SACP Provincial Secretary Gilbert Kganyago gave the undertaking that the local party branch would volunteer their services to assist her. He pledged labour to make bricks for constructing a house before the arrival of winter. According to him it would be an example of communities helping each other in making a difference in their lives. Kganyago afterwards mentioned he was touched to realise that they still had a lot to do to improve the living standards of the working class. He said they would want to see living conditions – as in Chuene’s case - change for the better. “It is a good thing that she is trying to do something and we want to build on that.” Kganyago said they would await a programme from the local SACP branch, but by the end of June the four houses should be completed and occupied. tartling interpretations derived from an expert reconstruction and assessment of the scene of the accident that claimed the lives of Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane and his two protectors in the early hours of Sunday, could allay initial assumptions that the surviving truck driver is the only one allegedly to be blamed for the horror crash. The accused appeared in court at a time of a country joined in mourning and emotions running high over human factors possibly leading to the gruesome accident that killed Chabane and VIP protectors Lesiba Samuel Sekele and Marene Lawrence Lentsoane. The case against Amukelani Rikhotso (29) was postponed in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court to 10 April for further investigation. He appeared on three charges of culpable homicide and one of reckless and negligent driving. Rhikotso, who reportedly hails from Giyani, was not granted bail. He was represented by Erwin Sethole and Mohamed Shaik was on the bench. The previous day the African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo gathered outside Frans Mohlala House in Polokwane with flowers and to sign a book of condolences, which is expected to be available until tomorrow (Friday). to the crash, attorney and forensic accident reconstruction expert Philip Smit, told Polokwane Observer the Nissan truck, weighing about six tons at the time, was idling in a stationary position across the solid line separating opposing lanes when hit by the oncoming white Volkswagen Touareg driven by Chabane’s one protector. Smit, who attended to the scene a short while after the collision occurred, said the driver of the truck had partially made a U-turn in the road but was prevented from completing the turn by another truck on the opposite side of the road. It was alleged that the suspect had to lend help to the driver of the stranded truck on the roadside. Smit further established that the Touareg hit the truck on the right hand side, behind the rear axle of the truck. Photos taken afterwards reveal that the truck was equipped with reflector strips visible from a distance of at least 500 metres. Smit explained that the driver of the ministerial vehicle had seemingly neither applied brakes nor attempted to swerve to avoid a collision on approaching the truck. Smit also confirmed that even though the Touareg was equipped with an anti-lock-brake system, the tyres of the vehicle would have caused visible friction marks on the road if the brakes were applied such as for an emergency stop. He added that considering the initial marks of impact on the surface of the road, the force with which the truck was hit was extreme and the pre-crash speed extremely high. It resulted in the 4x4 colliding with the truck and landing

under it, the impact thereof so severe that it seemingly caused the truck to take a 270° clockwise rotation. It came to a standstill approximately 25 metres away, he said. According to him the truck was completely forced into the air as the Touareg ploughed in underneath the truck. He further pointed out that the ministerial 4x4 came to a standstill against the crash barrier on the right hand side of the road, an estimated 80 metres from the area of impact. The force with which the vehicle hit the barrier caused the barrier to be displaced to the right by approximately half a metre, according to Smit. He reckoned there was ample space for the fast-moving Touareg to pass in the far left lane or even the left hand shoulder of the road to avoid a collision. This was corroborated by another independent expert who spoke to Polokwane Observer on condition of anonymity. Assessing the available visuals and graphics, he came to the conclusion that in spite of the high speed at which the state vehicle must have travelled at the time, there should have been ample space for the driver to react to danger ahead. The source assumed that Chabane’s protector who drove the vehicle did not use the vehicle as a shield in an emergency as was supposedly the case in instances of defensive driving. Smit pointed out that defensive driving should rather have been applied to avoid the collision safely. A memorial service for Chabane is scheduled to be held at Jack Botes hall in Polokwane tomorrow (Friday) at 10:00. Roads in the immediate surrounds would be closed from 09:00 to 14:00, it was stated by the Polokwane Municipality in a release issued at the time of going to press. Traffic entering town from Church Street would be diverted to Paul Kruger Street. Chabane’s funeral service at Tshikundu Village in the Thohoyandou area is scheduled for Saturday at 07:00. It was learnt that a funeral service for Lentsoane is due to be held at Ga-Marishane on the same day and one for Sekele in the Mashashane area on Sunday. In the meantime tributes keep pouring in for Chabane, as friends and acquaintances all publicly share their memories of a man described as a respected intellectual giant. He will be remembered for the impact he made at political and governance levels, but mostly for the sense of humility portrayed in his liaison with others. Premier Stan Mathabatha signs the book of condolences in memory of the late Collins Chabane at Frans Mohlala House in Polokwane on Monday.

Millions unspent while residents drink river water >> Funds to be returned to National Treasury >> ‘Underspending due to incompetence and inefficiency in the municipality’ BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com

T

he latest report of the Auditor General revealed that Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) failed to spend R276 million in the 2013/2014 financial year. R130 million was unspent from conditional grants for infrastructure and a further R146 million from the capital budget. Sepuki Monyetshwale, Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor at CDM, says in a media release that this underspending, which now has to be returned to National Treasury, is a direct loss of service delivery due to incompetence and inefficiency in the municipality.

“Residents of Lepelle Nkumpi and Blouberg Municipalities are sharing water from streams and rivers with animals, as their villages lack any water infrastructure. The DA will be writing to the Limpopo MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Makoma Makhurupetje, to immediately investigate the reasons why such a large amount was underspent while residents continues to suffer from potholes, water shortages, RDP housing shortages and unemployment,” says Monyetshwale. Monyetshwale reckons that this indicates that the Municipal Manager and Chief Finance Officer of CDM are clearly not competent to effectively manage the finances of the district and they must be held accountable by the council. He promised that the DA will closely monitor action against the district municipality to ensure that this tragic affront to service delivery will not happen again. At the time of going to print, several attempts to source comment from the municipality, proved futile.

High rate of underage drinking in Blood River prompts SAB to react HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za South African Breweries (SAB) on Saturday staged an educational awareness campaign named ‘You Decide’ at Blood River outside Seshego. The campaign sought to highlight the dangers and consequences of underage and irresponsible drinking which is reportedly rife in the targeted area. SAB Corporate Affairs Specialist, Mike Mashaba said they chose Blood River as the setting for their campaign because the area experiences a high rate of crime, drug and alcohol abuse. “We have been approached by National Youth Development Agency to help create more awareness of underage drinking because it is rife in this area. We saw the need and simply told young

people in the area that alcohol is not everything; they must focus on their studies and avoid drinking at an early age. We want them to make the right choice that will have a positive impact on their future,” Mashaba said. Mishack Letsoalo, a resident of the area said he hopes that a campaign such as You Decide will help address social ills which are rife in the area. “The area is out of hand, young people no longer go to school, instead they go to taverns to drink alcohol which does not have any benefits.” He continued saying that once under the influence they then resort to petty crimes and even violence. It is hard to walk around Blood River, even during the day because of the wayward behaviour of young people in the area. We hope that this initiative could held to curb this ongoing problem,” he said.

LNDP registered as party YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com The Lepelle-Nkumpi Development Party (LNDP) in Lebowakgomo has received its certificate of registration. Registration of the party was formalised on 10 March. The party was formed after a disclaimer by the Auditor-General in 2012/13 and the dire need for representation on the local council after continuous non-responsive conduct on issues brought to the attention of Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality, explained LNDP Interim President Phauwe Mphahlele. The structure would continue to tackle problems affecting the community, especially the water crisis and electricity issues experienced by mostly rural villages and settlements situated in their immediate surrounds, stressed Mphahlele. He continued saying more than 100 villages were affected. According to Mphahlele they received support from across the spectrum, including local business, church leaders and taxi associations. He gave the undertaking to the community not to disappoint them. No date has been set yet for the official party launch. They were currently busy building branches to be able to launch soonest, concluded Mphahlele. Photo: Yolande Nel

Pol Muni awards over R2 million in bursaries BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com

P

olokwane Municipality has again made donations in excess of R2 million to fund bursaries and assistance to charity organisations on Monday. Since its inception, the municipality ensured that funds raised from the Mayoral Charity Golf Day and the Executive Mayor’s Bursary Fund helped to reach many families and individuals across Polokwane through its partnerships with faith based organisations, non-governmental organisations, traditional authorities and the youth. Lois Hardy, Member of the Mayoral Committee, in representing Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng at the event said that this year the municipality awarded R1,4 million in bursaries to 28 learners from the 1 402 applications received. The learners will be studying for various disciplines including Pharmacy, Civil Engineering, Chemistry and Public Administration. “From the 73 learners which received bursaries in the previous financial year, 34

bursary holders achieved an 80 to 100% pass rate and will be considered for further financial assistance,” said Hardy. This year the municipality also awarded almost R1 million to 33 charity organizations as part of its social upliftment mandate. Sport has been the greatest contributor to the Executive Mayor’s Bursary Fund and funds were raised to support charitable organizations through various partnerships that have benefited disadvantaged learners and charity organisations. “On behalf of the municipality, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the business community of Polokwane for contributing towards the Executive Mayor’s Bursary Fund and the Annual Mayoral Charity Golf Day. Their participation in this event demonstrates the resolve of a community in this municipality to strive towards creating a more caring society. We are encouraged that the business community takes a far more positive and optimistic view of the City’s future and that of our citizens,” Hardy said. “Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate each of the beneficiaries

here today. To the students, our plea is that please make sure that you concentrate on your studies in order to pass at the end of the year. To the organisations, please make sure that the funds are utilised for the intended purpose. Consider yourselves very fortunate because the queue is too long and you have to prove that we are not making a mistake by choosing you. It is our belief that the business people of Polokwane and Limpopo believe in the leadership of their capital city. We appreciate the support that we enjoyed over the past three years and we believe that there is more that we will continue to enjoy from this partnership. The past three episodes of the charity event were successful not because we are able to do what we do best, but because of the business community. I must say; your kind contributions assisted the municipality to give hope where hope was lost, to put smiles on the faces of destitute children. You have made a contribution beyond yourselves. Together we can contribute towards making Polokwane and Limpopo Province a better community and South Africa a better country,” Hardy concluded.

Government mourns the untimely passing of the Minister for Public Service and Administration, Ohm Collins Chabane. Minister Chabane passed away on Sunday, 15 March 2015 in a car accident together with his protectors, Sergeants Lesiba Samuel Sekele and Mareme Lawrence Lentsoane.

Minister Chabane will be laid to rest on Saturday, 21 March 2015 at 08:00 in Xikundu village, near Malamulele in Limpopo. Honourable Minister Ohm Collins Chabane, MP

Police welcomed the hefty sentence the Tzaneen Regional Court handed down to Jean Pierre Potgieter (24), Karabo Desire Lebea (29) and Lisbon Bonny Ndlala (32) on Friday after they were found guilty on charges of theft and armed robbery. Potgieter was sentenced to five years imprisonment while Lebea and Ndlala were also sentenced to five years for theft, ten years for armed robbery and a further ten year for hijacking. Tzaneen Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said the sentences emanated from an incident in October last year when Lebea and Ndlala hijacked a Volkswagen Polo at Ga-Makanye Village in Mankweng. “They drove away and committed an armed robbery with the same car two days later at a bank in Tzaneen. About R400 000 were robbed but the three were arrested the same day,” Ngoepe said. Some of the money and the stolen vehicle were recovered.

DA marches unto Education

>> Dire situation arising from problems with National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP) >> DA memo contains host of demands YOLANDE NEL >>observer.yolande@gmail.com

A

list of no-nonsense demands presented to the Department of Education during a Democratic Alliance (DA) march in Polokwane on Monday addressed a dire situation arising from problems with the National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP) that has reportedly resulted in the loss of innocent lives and scores of children affected across Limpopo over a period of time. The memorandum handed to Education Department Human Resources Support Services General Manager Naphtali Molope addresses cases that occurred in the province in the past. In the document the DA referred to two learners passing away in October last year after allegedly eating contaminated food provided by the NSNP in the Sekhukhune District. Since then and until the end of last month more than 1 600 children had allegedly taken ill after consuming contaminated foodstuff provided through the NSNP in six

separate reported incidents in the Capricorn District, the DA claimed. In the memo the party further referred to more than 38 000 learners in Vhembe and Mopani Districts not benefitting from the NSNP due to the non-delivery of food between October and December last year, while a similar situation involving more than 14 000 learners allegedly unfolded in Capricorn and Sekhukhune districts from January to March last year. The marchers were steered by DA Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle, Parliamentarian Desiree van der Walt and Legislature members Langa Bodlani and Katlego Phala. They firstly demanded that all children in qualifying schools receive meals on a daily basis, fresh food gets delivered and food with no clear expiry dates not be accepted, service providers are vetted properly, officials found lacking be held accountable, schools adhere to approved menus and that foodstuffs are provided in accordance with the menu and also that food handlers are monitored and evaluated on health standards. Lastly the DA demanded that measures be put in place to guarantee that there will be no further loss of life or injury due to the NSNP and that the department put children’s best interests first as it is constitutionally obligated to do.

Toenemende inbrake op Dalmada-hoewes pla RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

D

Ramoshaba.

itchell House learners were educated about engineering in a fun way recently when Junior Engineers for Africa (Jefa) visited the school and used Technic Lego to inform them about some basic aspects of the field. “We are teaching learners from Grade 00 to 09 about structures, gears and levers with Lego,” Brenda Windram, founder and team leader of Jefa explained. Jefa runs workshops at schools and science festivals across the country to help children with problem-solving skills, memory sequences, responsibility and life skills. The learners built objects such as rotating cars, caterpillars, cranes and helicopters. Judging from the concentration and excitement on the participants’ faces, the week was a huge success. “I believe it helps the children with their social skills and that they enjoyed it a lot,” Cindy-Lee Burger, educator at Mitchell House said.

Police warns law breakers this Easter

>> Motorists can expect road blocks and stop and search operations across the province >> Don’t leave valuable items in vehicles RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

T

he South African Police Service has warned that they intend maintaining high visibility and a zero tolerance attitude towards law breakers during the upcoming Easter period. Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto stated that the Police will not only focus on the major routes such as N1 and R71 towards Moria, but also keep a close eye on residential and business areas. “We will join other authorities such as the Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison and municipalities to ensure safety on the province’s roads and urban areas,” she said. The road to Zion City Moria, the headquarters of the Zion Christian Church will be the

main focus but Otto said motorists can expect road blocks and stop and search operations elsewhere in the province as well. “Motorists should not be surprised if they are stopped and their vehicles searched or their blood alcohol levels tested. We will not tolerate any kind of misbehaviour on the roads, especially drunken driving,” she said. Police will also be deployed within city centres. “During any holiday season petty crime increases. These type of crimes are what inconvenience people most as it is not only a loss of valuable items but also time consuming to replace bank cards and driver’s licences in case of a wallet or hand bag being stolen,” she said. Otto warned that people should not leave valuable items such as cameras, laptops and cell phones in vehicles. “Keep items out of sight. If you have no choice but to leave items in the vehicle rather put it in the boot where it is not visible. Don’t carry big amounts of cash. If you do, ask Police to accompany you to the bank, your business or both,” she said. Otto concluded saying that when people visit shopping centres to take care and be alert. “Don’t leave a handbag in a trolley while searching for something specific on a shelf. Your purse can be stolen in the blink of an eye.”

A

quick glance of the Audi A5 Sportback is all that is needed to make you want to stare and then get to it as quick as you

can. Wherever it goes, including at Audi Polokwane’s showroom floor, the Audi A5 Sportback stands out as clearly being in a class of its own – a five-door coupé. From the elongated, three-dimensionally carved bonnet through to the tail, the design echoes the classic form of a two-door. The sharp distinctive lines give the vehicle expression and stance. The flat roof is stretched elegantly over the frameless doors and a sporty shoulder line accentuates the large wheels. Short overhangs and a longer wheelbase create additional dynamics. The horizontal line of the rear bumper accentuates the decisiveness of the design, while diffuser insert in a contrasting colour increases the dynamics. The interior radiates elegance and sportiness. The architecture is harmonious and creates a lively atmosphere. Selected materials emphasise the high quality of workmanship emphasised in the new steering wheel, colours and chrome applications. The standard leather-covered steering wheel in threespoke design provides a good grip as does the ergonomically shaped gear or selection lever knob. When you get in you are amazed by the generous amount of space. Four, from an optional five, seats offer comfort and strong lateral support with new seat upholstery which adds diversity to the interior. The asymmetrical rear seat can be split and folded down to allow the loading volume to be extended quickly from 480 litres to 1 283 litres. The Audi engines are what impress most. The A5 Sportback employs TFSI technology which combines the advantages of FSI turbocharger for more power delivery. The TFSI engines you can choose from are all equipped with the economic start-stop system and it goes without saying that they comply with the EU5 emission standard. The 1,8 TFSI has 125 kW of power and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. It is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class with a fuel consumption of only 5,8 litre per 100 km with manual transmission. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 8,2 seconds.

Mnr J J van Rensburg is as hoof aangestel en me M van Niekerk as onderwyseres.

Other sessions during the course of the week, took place at the Molepo, Moletjie, Mankweng, Westenburg and Nirvana libraries. Today’s (Thursday) and Friday’s sessions will take place at the Seshego and Mankweng libraries, respectively.

The Department of Labour is calling employees from all sectors, job-seekers and unemployed individuals to attend an imbizo where they will be given the opportunity to register or check if they are registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund. The imbizo is planned for 18 April at Bolivia Lodge and according to Johannes Mokou, Spokesperson for the department, the forum will also grant job-seekers an opportunity to register for job opportunities on site. Mokou also stated that Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant is expected to be present at the event. Role players, employers and employees in the sector are envisaged to have ample opportunities to interact with the Minister as well as Senior Management of the Department on amongst other things, successes, gains and frustrations within the sector. Role players will also have an opportunity to share their suggestions and sentiments in order to help improve the sector. Mokou stated that free bus transport from areas such as Moletjie Moshate, Mokopane, and Mankweng, Mmotong wa Perekisi, Seshego, Westenburg and Polokwane will be available to ferry people to and from the imbizo. “People are also encouraged to visit their nearest labour centres for more information regarding bus routes, bus coordinators, times, venue and documents to bring during the imbizo,” Mokou said.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture held its Provincial Big Walk at Lehlaba High School sportfields in Tubatse area last Saturday. With this annual event the department aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle through sport and recreation activities thereby creating an active and winning nation. Malesela Ramaoka, acting Media Liaison Officer of the department said employees of the department in various districts and members of the local community participated in the walk. “The main aim was to encourage people to take up the habit of walking, and also to begin to engage in walking as a conscious choice in leisure-time activities. The initiative is prompted by the ever increasing number of obesity and high incidence of heart attacks amongst the communities,” he said.

Capricorn High School and Tommies players fight for dominance in the line-up.

The first rugby teams of Capricorn High School (CHS), Northern Academy and Mitchell House and the second team of Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naudé (Tommies) engaged in two friendly matches on the fields of CHS last Thursday. The first half of the match between Tommies and CHS was dominated by the visitors who started the second half with a 34-0 lead. The CHS players were however determined not to lose and scored 12 points for Tommies to win 38-12. Mahlangu shares his soccer knowledge with youngsters HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za

F

ormer Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates midfielder Jabu Mahlangu recently shared his knowledge and experience of the game with aspiring soccer players from Polokwane and surrounds during the Super Sport United Fan Zone at old Polokwane Rugby fields. Mahlangu, currently a Football Ambassador at SuperSport United Football Club said they decided to come to Polokwane because there is lot of in

the area and they also wanted to give youngsters an opportunity to display their talent. “Polokwane is one of those areas that are not given much attention in terms of talent scouting. SuperSport United plays some of its matches here and these youngsters are the ones who attend our matches. As part of giving back to the community, we thought we should come here and also give the youngsters a platform to showcase their talent,” Mahlangu said. Mahlangu officiated during several friendly, five-a-side matches between

local development teams and also discussed matters such as social skills and how to behave as a footballer with the youngsters. “Social skills are very important. Many professional soccer players have lost a lot because of misconduct and other social ills. It is important to impart such knowledge to the young people at an early age,” Mahlangu said. He also mentioned that he was impressed with the talent displayed on the day and he believes many youngsters can make it to Premier Soccer League if they remain focused.

pectators at the Polokwane Oval were treated to double the regular excitement during the Sprint Car Challenge on Saturday when eight monster vehicles engaged in fierce competition on the track. Although action in the regular classes also made for excitement Race Promoter Stephan Weideman stated that a much higher spectator count is proof of the sprint cars remaining a popular items on the calendar. As usual the night started with the Rookies. Roean van Breda took first place followed by newcomer Eric Enslin Jr whose car was only finished early the morning and Roelien van Breda who finished in third. The Stockrod class was ruled by Willie Blignaut. Nico Grebe took second place followed by Johnny Durant Jr. The 1660 class drew a good number of entries again and gave the crowd a good show as a lot of the cars is matched on pace. Sixteen-year-old WF Weideman, in the popular blue Citi Golf, and Dylan Bosch,14, gave the older competitors a hard time. JJ Fourie did not hesitate to give it his all

and finished first followed by WF and Sybrand Thysse. The drivers in the 2.0 litre Modified class once again provided a spectacular show. Desmond Bosch experienced mechanical difficulties in the first two events of the year but with his car in perfect mechanical condition he left Roelof van Breda and Johnny Durant senior no choice but to take second and third place respectively and him waving the chequered flag. Two new drivers were welcomed in the Hotrod class. Nico Vorster and Wors Prinsloo from Ermelo in Mpumalanga joined Polokwane Oval recently with Vorster already making name by setting up the best lap time of 14,2 seconds ever to be recorded at Polokwane Oval. But André Pienaar did not give him any chance in taking up the first place. Vorster had to be satisfied with a second place with Stephan Weideman in third. The Sprint Car class was the highlight of the event with spectators loudly supporting their favourite driver including local driver André Horn. Andries Marx took overall first place Adriaan van Zyl in second and Rudi Vorster in third. Weideman thanked sponsors of the event: Autozone, Fast Tools, Midas, Maxi’s, Amarillo Spur Mall of the North, Wimpy Cycad Centre, Panarottis Mall of the North Cappuccinos and Cell Serve. Molemole Soccer Academy hopes to be in the line-up for the finals of the Philly’s Games tournament set to be held at Seshego Stadium on 06 April. As the 2014 winners they are looking forward to do battle with teams from Moletjie, Sekhukhune and Seshego. The Philly’s Games originated in Tembisa more than two decades ago and is at present the biggest off season tournament in the country aiming to give lesser known development teams exposure to a larger audience in order to increase their experience. William Biano Moloto, Head Coach of Molemole Academy said they are ready to defend the title. “It is not going to be easy. Every team wants to win against us but we will show the opposition that our victory last year was not a fluke. We want to retain the title and the only way to do that is to exert ourselves well in the tournament,” Moloto said. He said the fact that they are now based in Nirvana and no longer have to travel long distances for matches mostly played in Polokwane is a great advantage. “The team has adapted well and we believe the relocation will be to our advantage in the long run,” he said.

Westenburg Rugby Club gears up for Easter Sport Festival RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com The Westenburg Rugby Club is preparing to host the sixth Westenburg Easter Sport Festival with the organisers expecting more than 5 000 visitors to flock to the Westenburg Sports Stadium from 3 to 5 April. Westenburg Rugby Club Chairperson Francois Hartlief explained that the club is a community based project, focussed on youth development through sport and recreation, and funded only by sponsorships and fund raising events with administrative support from the local rugby board. “With sport being a common form of recreation, we constantly strive at improving the level of developing youngsters at the same time keeping them away from criminal activities,” Hartlief said. The Westenburg Easter Sport Festival initiative is the brainchild of the executive committee of the Westenburg Youth Rugby Club with the aim of contributing something positive to

the community and the youth of the suburb, Hartlief said. Visitors can expect ten soccer teams, four netball teams as well as teams participating in golf, dominoes, pool, athletics and dance. Visitors can also look forward to a potjiekos competition, 5 km fun run and a last man standing competition. “Children will be entertained through games, jumping castles, kiddies’ athletics and a train ride. By this we hope to create a family friendly environment where the whole family will be able to find something interesting and exciting to do. The youth will also be entertained by a local DJ,” Hartlief said. Special guests expected to join in the festival include Polokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng, members of Eagles Bikers Club, Stress Cars Club, local school principals and Comrades Marathon 2012 winner Ludwick Mamabolo. Limpopo Bulle verbeter 300% RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com

T

HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Black Leopards Football club will be hoping to cause a major upset when they meet Kaizer Chiefs at FNB stadium on Saturday in the last 16 match of the Nedbank Cup. This is the second time the two meet in the Nedbank Cup and last season Chiefs knocked them out in the last 32 round of the tourney. Leopards Spokesperson, Berry Ramunenyiwa said they are ready for the battle and they will ensure that they win the match on Saturday. “Despite their status, Chiefs is just like any other team in the country. They were very lucky to beat us last season. We are more than ready for them. We have

learned from our mistakes which we committed in our previous encounter against them. We have rectified that and we don’t see anything stopping us from winning the match” Ramunenyiwa said. Leopards are currently in 6th position of the National First Division (NFD) with 34 points after 22 matches and Ramunenyiwa is adamant they can still win the league. “We are left with eight matches which is equivalent to 24 points. If we win all the matches we stand a good chance of winning league and it is possible,” Ramunenyiwa said. He also called football supporters from different parts of the province to come in numbers to the stadium to show their support as they are the only team in the province left in the tournament following the elimination of Polokwane City Football Club. “We are calling them to come in numbers to rally behind the team because we need their support,” Ramunenyiwa said.

egendary producer, playwright and one of Limpopo’s most talented sons, Mahuma Paul Rapetsoa was bestowed the Premier Special Award last week for the sterling work he does in the promotion of dramatic arts and theatre in the province during the Premier Service Excellence Awards. Rapetsoa developed a passion for dramatic arts and theatre in 1968 when, as a learner at Sefakaola Secondary School in Mokopane, he saw Gibson Kente’s play Sikhalo being performed on stage. “I was very young, doing form 2, and said to myself that I want to do something like that in future. I was so inspired I told my father that once I have completed school I want to venture into drama. He disagreed and told me to do teaching because by then it was a noble profession. I did pursue teaching and completed in record time because I did not want to let my father down. In 1972 however I took a course in Drama at Dolce House in Gauteng. I was happy to realise my dream and I met Gibson Kente, the man who I grew up idolising, and everything started there,” Rapetsoa recalled. He joined the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as Drama Producer in 1983. “I loved every moment of it. While I was there I went to Italy after I was named the best producer in one of the service’s competitions. Those were telling moments of my life, realising my potential as drama producer. I remember we attended a workshop while we were in Italy and it sharpened my producing skills and helped me to develop as producer and a playwright.” In 2004 he opened a drama school in Yeoville to help aspiring actors realise their dreams. “I saw the need for such a school and we managed to produce lots of actors who are currently doing well nationwide,” Rapetsoa said. He returned to Polokwane in 2014 to con-

tinue living out his passion at Matora House in Zone 4, Seshego built by his son, Matome Rapetsoa. At the house Rapetsoa senior trains and gives a platform to aspiring local actors and scriptwriters to showcase their talent. “We teach them acting, the art of dramatic writing and presenting. We don’t have such facilities around here, they are mostly found in Johannesburg because that is the centre of entertainment. We are happy to have such an institution in Seshego and to be able to help those who have a passion for acting to realise their dreams,” Rapetsoa said. He also mentioned that his wish is to see Provincial Government establishing theatres in the province so that local actors can have a place to hone their skills and practise their art. “The province has produced so many actors who are doing well on national television but we don’t have a theatre of our own. These people need a place where they can soothe the sense of their professionalism and the theatre can provide that,” Rapetsoa said. He currently applies one of his many plays, Get Down, to motivate learners and educators to work hard at school. “This play is used to motivate learners and educators and push them to work even harder. Through this play we encourage schools that are underperforming and we take the audience on a journey that explores many social problems affecting learners,” Rapetsoa said. In his acceptance speech he thanked Premier for the recognition and described the award as the beginning of greater things to come. “I was overwhelmed by the recognition. I was not expecting it. To tell you the truth I was there to honour the
