impopo’s learner pregnancy rate of 1 041 for the financial year 2013/2014 is 1 041 too many. The figures included in Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s recent response to a Parliamentary question by the Democratic Alliance (DA) equates to a symbolic 26,025 classrooms filled to the brim with an average of 40 pregnant girl children per unit. Considering the fact that in Limpopo terms the calculation is equal to little less than an entire school being pregnant at a given time, the scenario spells a bleak future for scores of girls across the province. The Limpopo figures point at 32 primary school learners and 1 009 secondary school learners being pregnant during the specific period and form part of a national tally of 20 833. The DA’s concern would apparently move for summoning the Minister to a parliamentary briefing on departmental plans to discourage teenage pregnancy. ecent reports that Limpopo Head of Hawks Dibero Molatjana has been suspended in connection with a number of allegations were described as not true by Hawks Spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“Molatjana has not been suspended. It is an internal matter which cannot be discussed in the media,” Mulaudzi said. Allegations were made in the media that Molatjana instructed junior members of the Police to transport her son from Polokwane to a college in Pretoria on a weekly basis using state vehicles.

Department follows up on complaints about clinic

It is alleged that the offence occurred in 2012. Molatjana is also accused of allegedly registering a family member with a medical scheme using the name of her secretary as well as allegedly claiming trips done by state vehicles as if her private vehicle was used on various occasions. Daily complaints received from patients who have to wait for days just to see a doctor resulted in a surprise visit by Department of Health Spokesperson Macks Lesufi to the Rethabile Community Health Centre on Wednesday. The visit revealed that approximately only 22 medical personnel out of an estimated 60 were on duty at the time. Lesufi, after listening to complaints from several patients, gave a stern warning to the management that action will be taken against staff who are regularly off sick.

In the response it is indicated that the national department collects and reports data according to the calendar and not per financial year as posed in the original parliamentary question. In the meantime statistics furnished in response to an earlier question posed in the Legislature by DA Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle sketch a picture of 663 Limpopo learners, the majority being secondary school learners, having been pregnant during the same period. From the contradicting numbers summarising the situation in secondary as well as primary schools in the province, it seems the youngest learner then battling with pregnancy was in Grade 4 at the time. Judging from the information and taken into consideration the school-going age, she could have been ten or eleven years by then. The stats, which exclude Grade 5 numbers, further reveal that six Grade 6 and 7 girls respectively were affected by pregnancy during that period. The recorded pregnancies appear to

have been most prevalent among Grade 10 learners, followed by Grade 11s, Grade 12s and Grade 9s. Among the secondary schools listed provincially, some of Polokwane’s best achieving institutions were not spared. Common belief has it that girls in rural Limpopo are more vulnerable than their sisters in the urban areas. The figures reflect the highest prevalence during the period was 27 pregnancies at a school in the Tzaneen area with a school in the Modimolle area having 21 pregnancies at the time and two schools in the Phalaborwa and the Malamulele areas with 17 pregnancies each. Schools in circuits resorting under Capricorn District seemingly mostly outnumbered the rest in terms of pregnancy rate during the term under scrutiny, followed by Vhembe, Mopani, Waterberg and Sekhukhune respectively. When reviewing the unfolding trend – despite a general resolve to curb teenage pregnancies - Limpopo’s younger generation is seemingly at extreme risk to contagious disease. Unwanted pregnancies still underscore a host of other underlying factors. It

primarily defeats all hope for an HIV-free generation while putting a huge burden on the government, the services it rolls out and already cash-strapped taxpayers. Black on white the figures may reflect a domestic situation turned upside down when a child or teen arrives home with the news that she is expecting a baby. At the same time it must be kept in mind that not all pregnancies included in the statistics might have been as a result of consensual acts alone. In a Legislature snap debate on school drop-outs steered by Smalle on Tuesday, he quoted a 12% rate among female learners compared to 0% male learners dropping out of school because of unspecified family commitment. “Learner pregnancy must be the main contributor here. Which again highlights the gender inequality in our society.” Smalle further shared possible solutions and recommendations, including the suggestion for legislation to standardise the prevention and management of learner pregnancies in Limpopo which, in his opinion, would not only allow female learners to remain in school but also minimise gender disparities.

he issue of Deputy Speaker in the Legislature, Lehlogonolo Masoga, allegedly running up an exorbitant phone bill on an official trip to America in August last year came up for discussion during Tuesday’s sitting, during which the Democratic Alliance (DA) gave notice for a debate on the issue. Following up on a report by a mainstream Sunday paper alleging Masoga’s running up “a R150 000 bill on X-rated material on his cell phone” was DA Limpopo Legislature

Whip, Bodlani Langa who gave notice for a debate on the matter during Tuesday’s sitting. He afterwards told Polokwane Observer he expected the debate to be tabled during the first sitting next week. In a media release he stated that the DA had moved for the Legislature to initiate an independent investigation into the allegations against Masoga. He continued saying “A dark cloud hanging over the deputy speaker compromises the integrity of the House.” Under normal circumstances the probe would have been referred to the Legislature’s own disciplinary committee, but that committee

During the council meeting that took place last Thursday, Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng tabled the municipality’s Multi-year Budget that provides for tariff increases of 12,2% for electricity supply and 10% for water, sanitation, waste removal and assessment rates. The tariff increase of 12,2% is educated by Nersa’s guideline on sales of electricity and the other increases are a result of inflation, increases in salaries, bulk purchase costs as well as the rising costs of fuel, equipment and materials. The water and electricity tariffs are highly influenced by losses due to burst pipes and leakages in the case of water and faulty meters and incorrect meter readings in the case of electricity. Municipal Manager Connie Mametja, during a recent meeting of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), conceded that a material loss to an amount of R97 356 152, was due to burst pipes, leakages and faulty meters and readings. Mametja then assured the MPAC that the introduction of the new smart meters will ensure more accurate readings and that consultants were appointed to deal with the replacement of old pipes that are destined to burst.

We further wish to state that the Legislature has indeed suspended a senior official linked to Supply Chain Management (SCM) on allegations of supply chain management irregularities and possible corruption as picked up by the Auditor General’s Report. However, the suspension of the said official has nothing to do whatsoever with the issue at hand. We also wish to put on record that the office of the Public Protector is currently conducting an investigation on the Legislature on a human resource-related matter involving one of our officials. Nevertheless, it has come to our attention that the provincial office of the Public Protector has recently received a telephone complaint from an anonymous caller complaining about the phone bill of the Deputy Speaker for the month of August 2014. According to Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison Spokesperson Kagiso Mootane more than 500 000 family ve-

hicles and more than 165 000 heavy vehicles which include buses and trucks are expected to enter the province when compared to last year’s statistics. “We expect traffic to increase from 12:00 today (Thursday) until tomorrow (Friday) morning. Traffic will also be at peak on Saturday around 14:00 and on Monday. The Tzaneen road (R71) will be heavily affected during the weekend as well as the Gilead road (R521) from the Groblersbrug Botswana border, Lebowakgomo road (R37) and the N1 South and North,” Mootane said. Weigh stations on all these roads will be manned 24/7 during the weekend where traffic officials will conduct routine checks on vehicle and driver fitness and overloading, after which a vehicle will be handed over to the Police to check loads for possible transportation of illegal items, according to Mootane. All heavy vehicles entering Polokwane from the N1 South will be rerouted onto the Tzaneen bypass.

Transport MEC Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana launched the Arrive Alive Campaign on Monday at Aganang Municipality. Referring to a bus accident outside Mokopane that left 28 persons injured earlier on the same day, Mokaba-Phukwana said drivers, passengers and pedestrians should take responsibility for their actions on the country’s roads. “Government will enforce the rules and regulations by increasing the visibility of traffic officers and ensuring the arrest of those who speed, overtake dangerously and drive under the influence of alcohol,” she warned, adding that the message is clear to motorists disobeying the rules of the road to expect having to face dire consequences. She added that 46% of accidents on Limpopo roads involve light motor vehicles, 21% light delivery vehicles, 9% minibuses and 1% buses. “We know most accidents happen at night and therefore we urge motorists to plan trips properly and rather to drive during daytime. Our call to road users is to adhere

to the speed limit, avoid drinking and driving, avoid using cell phones when driving, ensure vehicles are roadworthy, take regular breaks and buckle up,” she said. Last year Limpopo recorded the second highest number of fatal accidents, 23, during the Easter weekend. KwaZulu-Natal was the highest at 39. In 2014, 283 323 vehicles were stopped and 43 433 notices issued while 1 094 vehicles were discontinued and 1 457 vehicles impounded. More than 300 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, ten for reckless and negligent driving and 112 for other road offences. Statistics on vehicles travelling per hour through toll plazas in 2013 were measured at an average of almost 1 100 at the Kranskop Toll Plaza over five days. Mokaba-Phukwana concluded her address saying: “We want to make sure that Limpopo stay alive this Easter. We are appealing to motorists that it is in their own interest and safety to respect the rules of the road.”

Amukelani Rikhotso, 29, who faces three charges of culpable homicide and one of reckless and negligent driving was granted R5 000 bail by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Rikhotso is the truck driver who allegedly on Sunday, 15 March made a U-turn with his truck on the N1 South in front of an oncoming vehicle causing a fatal accident that claimed the lives of Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane and his two protectors Lesiba Samuel Sekele and Marene Lawrence Lentsoane. During Rikhotso’s first appear-

ance, the Tuesday after the accident, the case was postponed to 10 April. Magistrate Mohamed Shaik then urged Rikhotso’s legal representative, Erwin Sethole to consult with his client and to obtain all necessary information and details needed on the docket in order to speed up the bail application. Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said the accused briefly appeared in court on Tuesday and the bail amount was fixed at R5 000. He will have to appear in court again on 15 May. In the meantime Police have started questioning a person claiming to be a relative of the late Minister Chabane and who in the social media alleged that Rhikotso had been paid to obstruct the road when the car of Chabane and his two protectors were travelling in approached. “When these allegations were made, another family member opened an inquiry docket. On Tuesday we had a meeting with the senior public prosecutor who decided that the docket be changed to charges of crimen injuria, defamation of character and incitement. The accused has not been arrested yet and Police are still in the process of questioning him,” Otto said.

Lebogo in court again next month RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Former municipal councillor and businessman, Jacob Lebogo, who faces charges of attempted murder and discharge of a firearm in a public space, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court last Friday and the case was postponed to 22 May for further investigation. Lebogo faces these charges after an incident at Shisanyama Waterland, Penina Park in September when African National Congress (ANC) Milo Malatjie Branch Chairperson, Boy Mamabolo was allegedly shot and three other persons injured. Mambolo was seriously injured and spent several weeks in Mediclinic Lim-

popo’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Lebogo first appeared in court two days after the alleged shooting. The case was then postponed for two days while he remained in custody. During his formal bail application state prosecutor Jackson Mabasa proposed that bail be set at R10 000 to which Lebogo’s attorney, Tumi Mokwena replied that the accused can only afford R5 000. Magistrate Anne van der Merwe then granted bail of R5 000 on condition that Lebogo hands his passport to the investigating officer; does not interfere with or threaten state witnesses; does not commit any other offence and informs the investigating officer should he leave Polokwane at any stage and for any reason.

Tidimalo Chuene, Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality, said: “The community is urged to limit water consumption to immediate household needs and avoid irrigation of gardens, filling swimming pools and

washing cars.” According to the latest report from the municipality, the levels of the 50 and 30 megalitre reservoirs were 28% and 22% respectively, while the level of the Potgieter Avenue reservoir was 77%. The level of the Seshego reservoir is 18% and the reservoir in extension 34 is 95%. The Olifantspoort water plant is delivering 95 litres per second to Polokwane whilst Ebenezer is delivering 300 litres per second.

olokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng on Friday hosted a Water Indaba at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium as part of creating a platform to facilitate engagement around critical water challenges facing the municipality. The theme of the indaba was “Together we can save water to sustain our resources” and Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) and the Department of Water and Sanitation also made presentations on interventions and possible long- and short-term solutions. In her opening address, Nkadimeng said it is a reality that Polokwane is a water scarce area without any sources within the municipal boundaries and that this creates huge challenges for the municipality to provide sustainable water to all. She revealed that the normal shortfall is 18 mega litres per day, with a peak shortfall 67 mega litres per day. She explained that economic development brought numerous changes and challenges to the landscape and greatly accelerated urbanisation and therefore balancing of available resources against the array of socio-economic factors and the availability of resources remains the challenge and as a result water demand is higher than the available resources. Nkadimeng blamed the challenges that the municipality is experiencing on high water losses due to aging infrastructure, illegal connections, unreported complaints and no cost recovery in Mankweng and all rural areas. Insufficient funding for operations and maintenance, the fact that the water services budget is not ring fenced, vandalism of pipelines, including pump stations and boreholes, and pipe bursts were named as further contributing factors. The interventions mentioned by Nkadimeng, are to lodge a second application with

the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation (DWS) for abstraction of more water from Ebenezer Dam and the Olifantspoort Treatment Works, the replacement of aged infrastructure, to request more resources from the National Treasury for operations and maintenance, to intensify water conservation and demand management awareness. Increased security measures at boreholes and pump stations and enforcement of by-laws may also assist to address the challenges. “We are in constant engagement with Lepelle Northern Water, the Office of the Premier and the DWS to facilitate the approval of the plan to increase the water supply from Ebenezer. We are very positive that DWS will approve the Ebenezer scheme. I expect all of us to look at our commitments as a municipality and find new innovative ways in which we can unlock water challenges in our endeavour to create a better life for all,” she said. Stakeholders appealed to members of the public to conserve water and the municipality to enforce the law on illegal connections and cost recovery in areas where there is wastage. The elective conference of the African National Congress Youth League (Ancyl) in Limpopo is scheduled to be held at a venue in the Tzaneen area from 10 to 12 April. The announcement follows a recent meeting of the Provincial Task Team (PTT) of the Ancyl, it was stated in a media release on behalf of the league in Limpopo. “Pre-registration for delegates is currently underway in most regions, with the exception of structures in the Vhembe region where a few logistical matters are to be finalised. These include concluding the business of the 27 branches that have been interdicted. These branches are expected to convene before Sunday, 5 April 2015.” The theme for the provincial conference is “Youth in action for the advancement of the Freedom Charter to attain economic freedom in our lifetime”. This conference is expected to serve as political school where former leaders of the Ancyl will present number of organisational and historic documents. Ancyl PTT Coordinator Mosa Chabane told Polokwane Observer that the resolution had been taken for a Vhembe Regional conference re-run. According to him an interdict had been brought by individual members attached to the 27 branches in the region based on allegations of unfair treatment by the regional task team. He said Sekhukhune and Waterberg Regions still had to go to conference. Waterberg Region branch meeting processes still have to be concluded. Also branch audits have to be finalised in Sekhukhune Region. According to Chabane they needed 386 branches in good standing across Limpopo for a provincial elective conference to be held. He concluded saying the national Ancyl structure was due to decide on a date for the national elective conference at the time of going to press.

Municipality (CDM), Gilbert Kganyago applauded the Polokwane Municipality for taking leadership in putting together a platform to come up with solutions to the water challenges as it does not only affect the city, but the rest of the Capricorn district and other areas in the province as well. He said the community and industry must be taken on board regarding water conservation because industry accounts to a higher percentage of water conservation. Kganyago said the CDM would support Polokwane in its endeavours. As a way forward, Nkadimeng said that among others, the municipality will intensify its programme on cost recovery in rural areas, disconnection of illegal connections, installation of smart metering and intensification of conservation campaigns. She stressed that the immediate solution to the challenges in Polokwane is conservation of water. “This municipality is taking a strong stance against those who continue to waste water because they can afford the surcharges by instituting on the spot fines and the closing off of supply to those who will be found watering their gardens,” she said.

Twenty-seven people were arrested and several items such as drugs and alleged stolen property seized during a joint operation between Polokwane Police, Community Safety Forums, Ward Councillors, Correctional Services, Traffic Police, Polokwane Municipality and the Limpopo Gambling Board in the city on Saturday. Polokwane Police Station Commander Thomas Shingange described Operation Mangoose as successful since Police managed to seize 23 g of nyaope, 761 g of dagga, one plasma television set, 36 pillows and two knives. “The operation targeted individuals, groups and several venues which led to the arrest of 23 undocumented foreign nationals and another four for dealing in dagga, possession of drugs, possession of dangerous weapons and possession of car break-in equipment respectively. Shingange warned residents to refrain from engaging in criminal activities over the Easter weekend as similar operations are destined to be conducted.

Alleged drug syndicate cracked

Two men were arrested at Lenyenye just outside Tzaneen last Thursday for possession of cocaine, nyaope and dagga. The two men, from Nigeria and South Africa respectively, have already appeared in the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of drugs and stolen property and were denied bail. They are remanded in custody for further investigation until their next appearance on 22 April. Tzaneen Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe could not confirm their names. “Police received information from the community about the two men allegedly dealing in drugs which were immediately followed up and an operation conducted. The two were arrested and a suspected stolen Volkswagen Polo, cell phones and Information Technology (IT) equipment with an estimated value of R400 000 were also recovered,” Ngoepe said, adding that the value of the drugs is still to be determined.

Elderly woman killed in accident

Police in Lebowakgomo are investigating a case of culpable homicide after an elderly woman was killed during an accident at Podungwana Naledi Zion Christian Church in Mafefe Village last Wednesday. Police Spokesperson Mpho Moloisi said the woman is believed to have been exiting a taxi adjacent to the road when she was hit by a vehicle. “Emergency Medical Services certified her dead on the scene and she was transported to the state mortuary in Lebowakgomo. We urge motorist to observe and be alert when travelling close to schools or churches and to keep to the speed limit at all times,” Moloisi said. Investigation continues.

Man in dock for murder

A 54-year-old man suspected of killing a 36-year-old man at Marulaneng Ga-Chuene Village just outside Lebowakgomo on Sunday was expected to appear in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court either on Tuesday or yesterday (Wednesday). According to Lebowakgomo Police Spokesperson Mamphaswa Seabi the two men allegedly became involved in a fight over a girlfriend. “During the fight the deceased was stabbed with a sharp object several times. Police are still investigating,” he said.

Recognising that relationships already exist between peers at the three universities the partnership will focus on specific academic projects in the areas of Engineering, health sciences, education, Mathematics and social sciences. It will also include staff mentoring and capacity building, student exchanges and access to research and teaching facilities at Wits’ rural campuses in Mpumalanga. “This is an exciting project for Wits and speaks directly to our objectives of being a globally competitive and simultaneously, a local responsive institution,” Habib added.

He won a further 15 cases of 1,25 l Coca-Cola, Sprite, all Fanta flavours and Stoney. Manthato was one of 1 000 Coca-Cola customers across the province who took part in the competition that ran from 1 September to 31 December 2014. The competition was open to all retailers of Coca-Cola products. In order to qualify for the competition merchants had to sell 1,25 l sizes of Coca-Cola core brands such as Sprite, Fanta all flavours and Stoney at the recommended selling price of R9.00 at the time. They also had to ensure that there was 100% penetration of Coca-Cola Core brands at their shops and no other brands were kept in the branded Coca-Cola cooler. “We came up with the competition because we realised that not all shop owners were complying with the recommended selling price, but instead selling at a prize we had no knowledge of. We believe the competition will prompt them to comply,” Joe Ramokoto, Main Market Trade Channel Manager at Coca-Cola Fortune said. In a brief interview with Polokwane Observer, the visibly jubilant Manthato said he was confident that he would win the competition after a pastor at the Zion Christian Church, of which he is a member, told him last year that a big gift was coming his way. “My first stop today will be the church, then home,” he said adding that he was going to sleep there for two days and then go back home. He said the bakkie will add value to his current fleet of cars and his business. “I already have a sedan and seven tractors which I use for business. I think this new vehicle will add value to the business. I want to thank Coca-Cola for the competition and for the great initiative. I have been in the business for 23 years and I have never won such a big prize,” he concluded. Lindi van der Merwe, Trade Marketing Manager at Coca-Cola Fortune said they are proud of Manthato for winning the main prize in the competition. “He deserves it and may Coca-Cola continue to make success come his way,” she said. She congratulated the runners-up who walked away with 10 Samsung S5 phones, 10 Samsung Tablets and 40 cases of 1,25 l of Coca-Cola core brands. “We are proud to say that we had 1 000 qualifying customers in our district and, after a preliminary draw, we invited 150 lucky Coca-Cola customers to partake in our draw. The University of Limpopo (UL), University of Venda (Univen) and University of Witwatersrand (Wits) have signed a memorandum of agreement on a strategic partnership in the areas of research and postgraduate studies, teaching and learning and community engagement. Mahlo Mokgalong, UL Vice-Chancellor and cosignatories Adam Habib, Wits Vice-Chancellor and Peter Mbati, Vice Chancellor of Univen signed the memorandum in Johannesburg on Friday. Mokgalong is quoted to have said afterwards that the UL takes great pride in the partnership and believes that the academics will exchange ideas to empower communities and students at the three institutions. He also added that when a collaborative effort is undertaken, much can be achieved. LU SA Noord dring daarop aan om sitting te hê op die voorgestelde grondkomitees wat vanjaar in terme van hoofstuk 6 van die nasionale ontwikkelingsplan (NOP) binne die grense van distrikmunisipaliteite gestig moet word. Die doel van die komitees is onder meer om 20% grond binne die distrikmunisipaliteit se grense te identifiseer vir oordrag aan begunstigdes. Hierdie begunstigdes sal uit die geledere van voorheen benadeeldes kom met die klem op vroue, jeug en persone met gestremdhede. Die 20% grond wat geïdentifiseer en oorgedra moet word, moet vir landboudoeleindes gebruik word. Die werkgeleenthede wat die landbousektor moet skep vir 1 miljoen mense moet ook gedeeltelik hier geskep word. Die doelstelling is onder meer voedselsekerheid en armoedeverligting. Volgens Drickus Botha, streekbestuurder van TLU SA Noord, sal die begunstigdes uit hierdie grondoordrag nie eienaarskap van die grond bekom nie, hulle sal dit slegs mag

huur. “Hierdie bepaling is ‘n groot probleem omdat die handelsbanke nie geld gaan leen vir landbou-aktiwiteite waar die grond nie as sekuriteit vir die lening kan dien nie. Handelsbanke mag ook verteenwoordiging op hierdie komitees opneem, maar het dit dusver nog nie gedoen nie,” sê hy. Botha sê TLU SA staan `n vryemark ekonomiese stelsel met privaatbesitreg voor en wil sitting op die komitees bekom sodat hierdie vryemark ekonomiese beginsels daar ingedra en verdedig kan word. “Hoe meer ondernemings wat suiwer vryemark ekonomiese stelsels steun aan die komitees se werksaamhede deelneem, hoe makliker sal dit wees,” is sy mening. Behalwe vir ‘n verskeidenheid privaatsektor rolspelers soos landboubesighede, insetverskaffers, handelsbanke en georganiseerde landbou, sal daar ook staatsdepartemente op die komitee dien. Benoemings vir sitting op al vyf distrikmunisipaliteite in Limpopo en die proses van stigtingvergaderings is ook reeds afgehandel. Verifikasie vind nou plaas waarna die komiteelede in kennis gestel sal word en met hulle werksaamhede ‘n aanvang sal neem.

KNP gate quotas in force during Easter weekend HERBERT RACHUENE >>herbert@mailbox.co.za Day visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) are requested to take note of gate quotas when planning their Easter visit as these will strictly be enforced during the coming Easter Weekend from today (Thursday) until Monday. Visitors are advised to either arrive at the gate very early in the morning, because the service is on a “first come first serve” basis, or pre-book their entrance with the central reservations office. KNP General Manager Communications and Marketing William Mabasa said although operational throughout the year, the gate quotas are mostly reached during long weekends or public holidays. “We urge individuals planning to come to the park as day visitors to please make the necessary arrangement ahead of time in order to avoid unnecessary disappointment,” Mabasa said. “Pre-booking for entrance comes with a non-refundable deposit of R36 per adult and R18 per child, which must be paid in advance. Day visitors with advanced bookings are expected to arrive at the booked gate and date before 13:00, after which the booking lapses. A pre-booking however does not exempt the day visitor from paying the normal conservation fees upon arrival at the gate but secures him or her entry”.

“All visitors are also reminded to bring along their identity documents (IDs) or alternative form of identity to avoid problems at the gates. Wild Cards cannot be used to identify one as legitimate holder and should be accompanied by some form of identity,” Mabasa explained. Mabasa also reminded day visitors not to take liquor with them as the alcohol ban on public areas in the park is a permanent rule which is enforced at all times. Other park rules must also be adhered to at all times while in the park. ‘’Day visitors, who may not be able to gain entry because the quota shall have been reached, can if they wish, make use of the park and ride facility which is available at some gates. The park and ride option will cost visitors extra money but should be better than having to return home. “We request visitors to plan their trip by observing gate opening and closing times so that they do not find themselves either speeding or arriving late at the camps and gates on their way in and out of the park. People must please read their permits which they receive at the gates because all the rules and regulations of the park are clearly stipulated in those documents,” Mabasa concluded. KNP has ten entrance gates, Pafuri, Punda Maria, Phalaborwa, Giriyondo, Orpen, Paul Kruger, Phabeni, Numbi, Malelane and Crocodile Bridge.

Selaelo Kgatla, long serving minister of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa’s Polokwane Congregation recently bid his flock farewell in a moving ceremony held at the church’s satellite venue in Serala View. Kgatla started ministering in 1997 and felt it was time to retire and pave way for other ministers as per regulations of the church. “The regulations of the church say that when one reaches the age of

65 one should retire and I have passed that age. I enjoyed my time there as a minister and I am happy to remain a member of the congregation,” Kgatla said. Selaelo Maponya, Member of the church’s General Council described Kgatla as a visionary leader, selfless, dedicated and with lots of integrity. “We learned a lot from him and he has left a legacy,” Maponya said. Polokwane Observer visited the flea market on Saturday at 11:00 and found that six stalls and an entertainer on stage to be the only activities. The jumping castle was also vacant and only a few visitors were in attendance. Matshidiso Mothapo, Assistant Manager: Communications of the municipality, says the market later experienced a fair attendance as it was perhaps a bit early for the patrons and the organisers who were still finalising some of the stalls. “The flea market has assisted some traders to reach patrons which they didn’t have access to before. The vendors who trade in goods like traditional attire, jewellery, jumping castles and spices have reported to realise growth in their trade at the flea market. One of the traders who is producing spices has been identified by the municipality to be assisted with capacity in terms of packaging the products. The event

“Die werkswinkel wat hoofsaaklik aangebied is om die koorkultuur in Limpopo te bevorder, was uiters geslaagd. Ek is daarvan oortuig dat almal dit geniet en iets daaruit geleer het. Barret het die manier om ‘n werkswinkel op ‘n prettige en praktiese manier aan te bied,” sê Ans Becker, organiseerder van die koorwerkswinkel en koororganiseerder van Ensemble Esprit. She hopes to visit them again and is excited for the talks that she is still planning to give.

SAPS talks about safety at Centenary House Residents and staff members of Centenary House were informed about personal safety, how to keep safe in potentially harmful situations and how to avoid such situations where possible when six members of the Polokwane Police visited them recently. Valerie Maloba, Coordinator of the Social Crime Prevention Unit, cautioned the audience about being attacked. “Don’t walk alone, travel in groups if you go to town because it decreases your chances of getting mugged,” she said. She added that one should not move around with a huge amount of cash; not fight robbers or attackers and immediately report criminal activities. Jerry Letsoalo, a social worker attached to the Polokwane Police, shared information about the danger and effects of substance abuse. “A drug is any chemical substance, legal or illegal, natural or synthetic, that has a biological effect on a person if taken,” Let-

soalo explained to the residents and elaborated about how it can affect a person negatively. The SAPS also offered their services to assist residents wanting to go for a walk or visit shops or other businesses. The caregivers at Centenary House thanked the SAPS members for their visit and sharing the information with them.

uth Emslie, Department Head of English at Flora Park Comprehensive High School, recently returned from a visit to the United States of America where she participated in a customised professional

development course focusing on teaching methods and instructional technology, participated in a practical field experience at secondary schools and learnt the American culture. Emslie received a fellowship award from the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Programme, a program of the

Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Unites States Department of State. Emslie said during her stay she personally observed esteemed respect for law by citizens, high environmental awareness, a lot of recycling done, highly motivated teachers, maximal use of technology in the classroom, lesser subjects done in the classroom, use of assistant teachers to help learners with challenges and teaching with the child in mind. “The child is considered to be the cornerstone for lesson planning, teaching and assessment; teachers prepare thoroughly and goals for the day are explicitly indicated to learners on the board,” Emslie explained. “A high respect for one another, teachers and students giving one another “space” and understanding within a democratic teaching-learning environment, was evident.” According to Emslie the programme basically covered provision of skills in secondary school English language, teaching language skills, methods, approaches, objectives and goals,

curriculum design, lesson planning, assessment, instructional technology, research, service learning, cultural enrichment, gender equity, the American education system, field observation in identified secondary schools, university and families, conference attendance and presentations, sight-seeing of American historical monuments and other centres. Emslie intends to share her experiences and skills with her colleagues and students by work shopping learners on gender equality and equity and secondary school teachers on effective and feasible ways to improve on English teaching and assessment. She is extremely grateful to Gilbert Sepuru, Simon Mpe, Senior Education Specialist in the Polokwane Circuit Office of the Department of Education, the US Embassy, the International research and Exchanges Board (Irex) and her family, who positively supported her. “I am now more empowered to use these skills in the teaching of English and to train fellow English educators,” she concluded.

Botha was die jongste danser wat ons toe vergesel het,” sê De Lange. Volgens De Lange is die suksesverhaal van die ateljee se dansers harde werk en toewyding wat die kinders se selfbeeld, koördinasie, balans, postuur, selfvertroue en goeie menseverhoudings bevorder. Make your free time work for you this April Each year many South Africans look forward to the month of April as it is filled with long week-ends and public holidays. This year Boston City Campus & Business College encourages South Africa’s youth to be proactive during the holiday period and to make the most of their free time. “Taking a break does not necessarily mean one needs to be idle. While creating a balance between studying and socialising is vital to one’s physical and psychological well-being, it’s just as important to use your free time constructively,” says Natalie Rabson, Marketing Manager at Boston City Campus & Business College. “Studies can be draining, and the downtime from public holidays and vacations is great for recharging. However you should also make the most of the time by scheduling activities that will either add to your CV, your skills base or your pocket!” A few suggestions to make the most of all free time coming one’s way: *Plan your goals It’s when one has free time that one’s mind is most relaxed. This is also the best time to reflect on the past few months that have just gone by and to prepare oneself mentally for what lies ahead. Set goals, whether personal or study-related, and plan how to achieve those goals. *Get work experience A part-time job can be a great way to add structure to one’s week, meet new people and gain real life work experience. This is also a great time to sharpen skills and interests and to use those skills to earn an extra income. Never look down on work opportunities that may come one’s way. *Provide extra lessons to matriculants or volunteer at your local school “While we teach, we learn,” said Roman philosopher Seneca. By teaching what you know you’re not only helping others, but you are also challenging yourself. Research has shown us that students enlisted to tutor others, work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. *Form a study group For most students there’s just not enough time to liaise with others in attempts to form a study group. Come the April holiday period, there would be plenty time on your hands. Learning in a group can serve as motivation during times you find it difficult to concentrate, such as afternoons for example. You also learn from each other and can

break up the task of making summaries. *Catch up on the admin Now is an ideal time to catch up on all the admin you wouldn’t normally have time for - whether it’s preparing application forms for bursaries or college and university entrance or whether it’s updating your CV. You can apply at Boston for any of the degrees or diplomas for 2016. Receiving an acceptance letter or conditional acceptance based on pending final results is a great relief. Get started with the collation of necessary documentation for all your applications. *Learn a new skill There are some great short courses out there for learning a new skill quickly. These are also often not expensive, like learning a new computer skill or taking up a course in bookkeeping, which can then be used to earn extra cash. Bookkeeping is also an outstanding introduction to accounts at varsity. For those who wish to do a BCom, but have not done accounts in matric - this will be time well invested. A course such as photography or nail technology can also lead to a person earning extra income while studying. *Perk up your health status Routines can keep you so busy that you might neglect your health. Why not take this free time you have to rejuvenate yourself? Maybe take up an exercise class or start the day with a morning run, while trying to give the greasy campus diet a break. Who knows, you might find that you’ll want to continue with this new lifestyle – it can only be good for you. “The real world of either work or tertiary studies, or even a gap year, can come as a shock to many who leave the comfort that a fixed routine such as matric provides. That’s why it’s important that young people prepare themselves for what’s to come. “Vacation time can provide such an opportunity. Once you are in the work market you realise just how quickly time goes by and how easy it is to put off minor, but important tasks. Start now by making your free time work for you, and ensure that one day you don’t regret having wasted it,” concludes Rabson.

ot everybody gets the chance to follow their ideals, but for Lethabo Phoshoko her dreams recently became a reality when she learnt that she is among the top 100 finalists from which the 25 finalists for the 2015 Mrs South Africa title will be selected on 24 April. Phoshoko, a 28-yearold mother, wife, philanthropist and former Mathematics lecturer who is currently employed as a forensic analyst is the only contestant from Polokwane. Mrs South Africa is the most prestigious pageant for married women in SA and regarded as an empowerment programme with the finalists and win-

ners are usually successful businesswomen, mothers and wives between the ages of 25 and 50 years. Asked for comment after being selected as a semi-finalist Phoshoko said she was honoured. She intends using the platform to inspire a lot of women, not only in Limpopo but across South Africa, especially those living in rural areas. Phoshoko has been engaged in various community projects such as empowering women who run orphanages in different settlements across the province. She is presently also actively engaged in raising funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). In her view community work does not only suit a good cause but also inspires other married women. She holds the belief that being married does not mean your life ends and that you should be able to reach out to other people and positively impact their lives. “When we get married we do not bury our dreams at the altar” she said. Phoshoko first entered pageants to get out of her comfort zone. She was crowned first princess in the Miss Summer Heat Limpopo in 2010 and previously participated in other pageants such as Miss SA, Miss Earth South Africa and Miss Sundowns. Katlego Phosoko, her husband, is very proud of her and wishes her good luck in her efforts to make a difference. Cansa will host a fundraising dinner as part of events on 24 April. he University of Limpopo’s (UL) School of Accountancy has attained the highest possible rating for its Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) degree from the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (Saica), a status it shares with only 10 other Saica accredited universities. This ranking positions the school and institution favourably so as to better achieve its targets of being a leading African university that is focussed on the developmental needs of its communities and epitomising academic excellence and innovativeness. From achieving a 75% rating in all of Saica’s criteria in 2011 and being appraised as an overall 2 (needs improvement) the UL’s School of Accountancy has advanced to the highest rating, 1 (fully compliant) following an accreditation visit from Saica in 2014. During the UL Saica accreditation announcement in Polokwane last Thursday Cosmas Ambe, Director of the School of Accountancy and incumbent of the Nedbank Chair in Accountancy, described this assessment as a milestone that places the school in line with many established universities and ahead of others in terms of training and producing much needed professionals in the field of Accountancy. “This is in line with this university’s vision and, in response to other challenges, Saica and UL entered into an agreement in 2004 - the UL Thuthuka Project - with the objectives: ‘To develop and to sustain accredited

The Chief Executive Officer/Principal of the College, Khorommbi Madzhie officially opened and welcomed staff members with the encouraging words of God. “God chose you to work in this College so that you can bring changes which will develop the society, so please don’t underestimate yourself because you are something, not nothing,” Khorommbi assured the staff members. In the second day of the meeting there were group sessions whereby staff members were assisting each other with planning and afterwards each group presented the outcomes. Amos Thema, Deputy Principal for Corporate Services, in conclusion, encouraged staff members to work hard to achieve their plans.

Mudau was prepared for the position of chairperson while serving as Vice-Chairperson for the previous term of office. he holds a PhD in Rural Development from Univen and is also the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Venda Innovative Growth Company (Pty) Ltd. In an interview with Polokwane Observer, Mudau said that he advocates organisational renewal and that the BMF will focus on organisational transfor-

mation without being confrontational. “The BMF should add value to members and I am passionate about the retention of past chairpersons and to give them active responsibilities. People forget about past chairpersons and their experience and skills are of great value to younger generations,” Mudau stated. He intends introducing programmes wherein BMF members such as lawyers, medical practitioners and accountants will offer their services and expertise for a few hours per month to capacitate institutions like municipalities, schools and clinics. Excitement during Pepps Easter hunt

The search was on for the good stuff at PEPPS Polokwane Preparatory School and College last Wednesday during the school’s Easter egg hunt and fundraiser. Three thousand two hundred and eighty Easter eggs were collected for children at the Cansa Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) Paediatric Oncology Ward at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital. Learners from Grade R to Grade 7, some in bunny outfits and others wearing face paint, took to the

hunt with great energy and also participated in a variety of fun items. The bunny hop, a kind of sack race for bunnies, was very popular but nothing could detract from the main quest of the day namely finding the eggs. The older learners were also tasked with deciphering clues around the school grounds to find the hidden treasures. Judging from the decorated classes where balloons, chocolate bunnies and other elements abounded the learners and staff of PEPPS truly got into the spirit of Easter. “We do an Easter hunt every year and it never disappoints. Both learners and educators enjoy it a lot,” Department Head Grades R to 7, Celri Lawrenson said.

Stanford Lake College recently hosted their Open Weekend for Grade 6s and 7s. SLC Marketer Rona Mc Gaffin reported that local learners were joined by some from as far away as Gauteng, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique. All joined in the fun two-day event that included a sleepover. The prospective students started with an art project, a science experiment and a talk on invader plants. Activities such as pushcart racing, hockey, netball and cricket coaching, a night hike and an adventure challenge that left them exhausted but happy by the time they left. The weekend ended with all the youngsters rafting and kayaking on the dam in true Stanfordian style.

Tips for finding a good, honest contractor R

enovating or adding on to a home is generally a stressful exercise because firstly there’s the mess that invariably accompanies any form of building and then there’s the inconvenience. Thirdly there’s the frustration which often occurs when a contractor doesn’t keep to the allotted time schedule or doesn’t do the work to the required standard. The worst scenario of all is when a contractor insists on being paid a hefty deposit and then rides off into the sunset, never to be seen again, having done little or no work on the project. Of course not every contractor is a crook, but there do seem to be an awful lot of unscrupulous, unqualified people setting up shop. So how do you go about finding someone who will not only complete the work to a satisfactory standard, but who will also not run off with your money? The Master Builders Association (MBA) web page offers a number of tips on how those who decide to renovate their homes can protect themselves against becoming yet another statistic: • The client must not pay any deposits in cash. An Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) to an identifiable bank account is a must. If the contractor is a sole trader then request a copy of his ID book and a utility bill clearly stating his home address. • The client should request references from previous clients, with addresses where the work was undertaken and with contact numbers. • The client should always try to view the work done at these references and speak to the previous client. It is also highly recommended that anyone engaging a contractor ensure that the person or company is registered with the MBA. Fly-by-nighters don’t usually belong to a registered body which will, if the need arises, hold them accountable. Although professional builders and other contractors generally charge more, as the saying goes ‘you get what you pay for’ and very often the cheaper option becomes far more expensive in the long run. Although most contractors will insist on some sort of deposit, homeowners should be wary of those who demand full payment upfront for the job. Word of mouth is king in the world of advertising. Ask around to see who has earned a solid reputation and shy away from those who are vague when asked about previous work. A homeowner who is unhappy with the time taken to complete the job or with the overall quality of workmanship should take action as soon as possible. Firing a contractor who has not lived up to his promises or who is simply not equipped to do the job may not be pleasant, but it could end up saving thousands in the long run. Try to avoid dealing with someone who professes to be a Jack of all trades – they are usually master of none. Reputable building companies don’t generally try to do all the work themselves and will call on other experts to do work that is outside their field of expertise. Ensure that the people you employ such as plumbers and electricians are legally qualified to do their jobs.

The Limpopo government on Tuesday hosted a planning workshop at Bolivia Lodge that focused on the implementation of the Limpopo Development Plan. The theme of the workshop was “Towards effective and efficient implementation of the Limpopo Development Plan” and comes after the Province has successfully developed the Limpopo Development Plan (LDP). The LDP is a five year master plan that aims to ensure sustainable development, reduce unemployment, poverty and social inequalities in the province. Amongst the guest speakers was Joel Netshitenzhe, a member of the National Planning Commission and Executive Director and Board Vice-Chairperson of the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (Mistra). Netshitenzhe, in his presentation, alluded to the basic premise of the LDP and said that the state does not exist for its own sake, but to undertake programmes deriving from the popular mandate, and in the context of the current electoral cycle. The LDP should strive towards a growing and inclusive economy that creates decent jobs; self-employment and sustainable livelihoods; quality education and training for participation in the economy and society; better quality health care that is broadly accessible; serious and all-round development in rural areas and safety and security for all. “These imperatives should in turn be informed by the provisions of the Constitution about the ideal society we wish to be, the existing reality and long-term plan on how to get there,” Netshitenzhe said. Underpinning the Limpopo Development Plan are ten High-Level Development Targets to be attained by 2020. These targets are: To grow the economy to 3%; creation of 429 000 jobs; increased access to basic water from 83% in 2014 to 90%; increased access to electricity supply from 83% in 2014 to 90%; increased access to sanitation from 43% in 2014 to 50%; increased matric pass rate from 72% in 2014 to at least 80%; increased Geographic Gross Product contribution to the national GDP from 7.15% in 2014 to 9%; reduction of the unemployment rate from 16,9% in 2014 to 14%; increased average life expectancy from 58,3 in males in 2014 to 60, and 62,5 in females in 2014 to 65 and reduction of inequality in terms of GiniCoefficient from 0.61 in 2014 to 0.50.

MPAC implores council to address service delivery challenges BARRY VILJOEN >>barryv.observer@gmail.com Capricorn District Municipality’s (CDM) Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) has implored the council to address challenges such as substandard work of contractors on projects, delays in the energising of electrification projects, turn-around time to repair water supply breakdowns, among others. According to Moffat Senyatsi, Media Liaison Officer of the municipality, the committee raised service delivery concerns and challenges that should be surmounted to ensure sustainable service delivery in rural communities when the oversight report was tabled to council on Monday. ”The tabling of the oversight report is therefore a final step in the annual reporting process,” Tsoai Malebana, the committee

chairperson, is quoted to have said. “In January, council adopted the 2013/14 annual report to open it for public scrutiny and subject it to the oversight process of MPAC, on behalf of council. Subsequently, a public hearing was held last Thursday as part of consultations to give members of the public an opportunity to examine the annual report and make inputs to its contents in order to promote accountability,” Senyatsi said The municipality is required by the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) to prepare the annual report of each financial year for the purpose of providing an accurate and honest record of activities, performance in service delivery and budget implementation. It is a backward-looking document that reflects on all aspects of performance in terms of how the Integrated Develop-

Mafikizolo is an African band that was founded by Theo Kgosinkwe, Nhlanhla Nciza and Tebogo Madingoane in the nineties. The trio signed a recording deal in 1996 to independent label Kalawa Jazmee. Sadly in 2004 Mafikizolo lost one of their founding members, Tebogo Madingoane. Theo and Nhlanhla decided to build the legacy and continued as a duo.

Die Vereniging vir Persone met Gestremdheid (VPG), Limpopo het in samewerking met Mall of the North die sessie by die gewilde winkelsentrum aangebied. Kwessies soos hoe om persone met gestremdhede in die parkeerarea te hanteer en te verhoed dat gestremde parkering misbruik word, is behandel. Jurgens Nel, hoof van Mall of the North se sekuriteitsafdeling het motorwagte gewaarsku dat hulle nie omkoopgeld mag aanvaar om toe te laat dat ‘n niegestremde op parkering vir gestremdes parkeer nie. “Oortre-

ders in dié verband kan ‘n boete van R500 opgelê word of hulle voertuie kan verwyder word. Slegs persone wat ‘n rolstoel gebruik en wat met behulp van looprame en krukke oor die weg kom mag van die parkering gebruik maak,” sê Nel. Die parkering wat vir gestremdes gereserveer is, is breër as ‘n gewone parkering om dit vir gestremdes makliker te maak om van ‘n motor na ‘n rolstoel te skuif en andersom. Die proses is deur Johnny Graham, openbare bewusmaking- en fondsinsamelingsbeampte van VPG en self ‘n rolstoelgebruiker, gedemonstreer. “Ons wil mense daarvan bewus maak dat ons ernstig is oor die misbruik van hierdie parkering en dat mense beboet gaan word. Ek hoop van harte dat die opleidingssessie gehelp het en dat motorwagte die erns van die probleem verstaan.”

The ceremony was held at the music hall of PEPPS Polokwane Preparatory School and College and attended by athletes, parents and coaches. Nico Loots, Chairperson of the Ironwood Athletics Committee remarked that the awards ceremony may have come as a surprise to the athletes, since the season was already over and Mitchell House’s Kgola Khunou and Michelle Claassens from Curro Heuwelkruin received trophies for having the highest points on the National Absa Table.

Sowat 1100 atlete het vir die 5 km-pretdraf aangetree, 720 vir die 10 km, 420 vir die halfmarathon en 291 atlede het die marathon aangepak om onder meer vir die Comrades te kwalifiseer. Colinda Potgieter van Pietersburg Road Runners (PRR) en Mall of the North bemarkingsbestuurder, Rene van der Merwe het die eerste wedloop uiters suksesvol met behulp van komiteelede, PRR-klublede, borge en vrywilligers aangebied en terselftertyd die rekordboeke herskryf. Die Mall of the North Marathon is nou amptelik die grootste wedloop wat nog in Limpopo aangebied is. Demokratiese Alliansie (DA) Limpopo parlementêre lid en adjunkvoorsitter, Solly Malatsi was onder talle bekendes wat aan die wedloop deelgeneem het. Potgieter skryf die sukses van die wedloop toe aan die hoë gehalte borgskappe, vroegtydige en effektiewe bemarking deur Polokwane Observer as mediaborg en die

hoofborg, Mall of the North se deurlopende betrokkenheid, vasberadenheid en bemarking om van die geleentheid ‘n reuse sukses te maak. “Ons het geweet dié wedloop gaan ‘n hoogtepunt op die sportkalender van Limpopo word, maar met 2 531 atlete wat oor die eindstreep is, is ons grootste verwagtinge oortref,” sê sy. Volgens haar het historiese wedlope nooit meer as 1 500 atlete gelok nie en is dié getal as riglyn tydens die beplanning gebruik. “Teen Vrydag was dit duidelik dat heelwat meer atlete gaan opdaag en ons moes inderhaas ander planne maak om genoeg wedloopnommers vir al die atlete te kry. Atlete wat nie medaljes ontvang het nie, sal per SMS-boodskap laat weet word wanneer medaljes by die kiosk by Mall of the North afgehaal kan word. Medaljes sal alternatiewelik ook aan klubs gestuur word en individuele medaljes sal gepos word,” sê Potgieter. Goeie terugvoer is van die waterpunte ontvang ten spyte van die watertekort. Gesoute atlete is dit eens dat die roete ‘n wenner is en die wedloop definitief weer sal ondersteun. “Daar word reeds hard beplan aan volgende jaar se wedloop en daar sal definitief genoeg water, koeldrank, inskrywings en medaljes wees om selfs nog meer atlete te ontvang. In die ope 10 km-wedloop is Reghen Mahwai (29:39), Tlou Peu en Lesiba Peu die eerste drie mans oor die wenstreep terwyl Gladys Lukhwareni (40:27), Dimaktso Khambane en Denga Mashava die vroue-afdeling gewen het. Die algehele manswenners in die 21,1 kmope wedloop is Lameck Masiwa (1:06.57), Moeketsi Tseisa en Mthobi Joala. Die vroue-afdeling is deur Furaha Mollel (1:22.14) gewen gevolg deur Gift Ramabele en Nichole de Jong. Die 42,2 km-wedloop het veral belangstelling onder die meer ernstige atlete gelok en van die provinsie en land se topatlete was in aksie. Tweemalige goue Comrades Marathonmedaljewenner, Lucas Nonyana (2:33.58) is eerste oor die wenstreep gevolg deur Rufus Photo (PRR) en Mankgabe Magebi. Magebi is ook die eerste veteraan oor die wenstreep. Polokwane se spog vroue-atleet, Jane Mudau (3:35.37) van PRR is die wenner van die ope-afdeling sowel as in die meestersklas. In die tweede plek was Melanie Melville, Polokwane Atletiekklub (PAC) wat ook eerste in die veteraan-afdeling was. Linah Mhlongo was derde. Talisman het die prys ontvang vir die beste waterpunt gevolg deur RE/MAX Northland Realty in die tweede plek. Die verskillende klasse is in spanne opgedeel en het aan naellope, sakresies, ‘n skopfietswedren, driebeenresies, gewigstoot en toutrek deelgeneem. Ouers en grootouers het die kleuters geesdriftig by die eindstreep ingewag. Skoolhoof, Linda Kruger sê die dag was ‘n groot sukses en die wye verskeidenheid items wat aangebied is, het vir elkeen van die sowat 168 kleuters geleentheid gebied om deel te neem. Eet- en drinkgoed was te koop en die reuk van gebraaide boerewors het verseker dat die stalletjies goed ondersteun is.

Aidan du Preez, new record holder and overall winner of The Wik with fellow Stanfordians Lachlan Truesdale, second in the junior men category and second overall, and David Morris who finished third in the same category.

tanford Lake College (SLC) recently hosted their annual Wik Triathlon, an off-road triathlon event started to commemorate Wik van der Walt, a staff member of the school’s outdoor centre. Van der Walt, who was passionate about the environment and adventure, passed away in June 2012 while competing in a mountain bike race. This year 320 athletes, 80 more than last year, participated in the event that entails a 500 m swim, 15 km mountain bike race and 5 km trail run. The Wik Trophy for the overall winner went to Stanfordian Aidan du Preez. His fellow learner Lachlan Truesdale finished in overall second position. Results for The Wik: Junior Women: Tamara van der Kun finished first in a time of 1:42.50 followed by Sarah Pogrund (SLC)

and Katherine Spenser. Junior Men: Du Preez finished in a new record time of 1:18.37 with fellow Stanfordians Lachlan Truesdale and David Morris second and third respectively. The first and second place juniors were also first and second overall placings for the Wik in all the categories. The results of the Stanfordian Challenge: (1 km swim, 24 km mountain bike and 10 km trail run) are: Female category: Melanie Mellville won in a time of 2:24.40, followed by Monica Roode and Janine Pretorius. Male category: Tiaan Rossouw finished first in 2:01.21 with Leon Roode second and Bernhard Bronkhorst in third place.

Dream an’ Do Foundation gains from Cape Epic Team Stanford Lake College (SLC), Rhoan Abbott and Gary Middleton, managed to raise an astounding R45 000 for the Dream an’ Do Foundation charity during the recent Absa Cape Epic mountain bike race. SLC Marketer Rona Mc Gaffin said the two-man team finished 328th out of 600 starting teams. The 740 km race over seven days didn’t come without its challenges though as the two riders suffered a few mechanical issues as well as illness. However, despite these difficulties they kept going knowing they were doing it for charity. Abbott, an SLC educator and Middleton, a medical practitioner and former parent of the school, said they were grateful to one and all for their amazing support.

ie plaas, Dieprivier, net buite die stad is die naweek in ‘n speelplek vir 4x4entoesiaste omskep met ‘n 25 km 4x4ekoroete en ‘n hindernisbaan waar deelnemers aan die Dieprivier 4x4 Gesinsnaweek hul voertuie se vermoë sowel as hul eie vernuf kon uittoets. Saterdagoggend het 46 voertuie en 16 Volkswagen Amarok-bakkies die ekoroete in die geselskap van Voetspore-aanbieder, Johan Badenhorst aangedurf. Sommige deelnemers het dit as uitdagend beskryf terwyl ander gemeen het dit was ‘n vulletjie. Deelnemers moes hul storie ken om verskeie terreine wat uit sand, klip en modder bestaan het, te oorkom. Die hindernisbaan wat vanjaar deur Volkswagen Polokwane en Amarok aangebied is, het groot belangstelling gelok. Steil hellings

met klip, tydtoetse waar bestuurders en passasiers moes omruil en dieselfde roete in trurat was net van die hindernisse. “Ons is groot dank aan Jannie van Waveren en sy seuns, Niekie en Jannie verskuldig vir die voorbereiding en gebruik van die roete. Hul onbaatsugtige bydrae om die naweek ‘n sukses te maak, word waardeer. Elke deelnemer wat die avontuur saam met ons geniet en dit ondersteun het, verdien ‘n stywe handdruk,” sê organiseerder, Flip Snyders. Die hindernisbaan het vir groot opwinding onder deelnemers gesorg. “Ons het vanjaar effens minder dagbesoeker-inskrywings as verlede jaar gehad as gevolg van die dreigende weer, maar is tevrede met die opkoms en goeie ondersteuning,” sê Snyders. Dieprivier 4x4 Gesinsnaweek is nie ‘n kompeterende 4x4-roete nie. “Die organiseerders erken jare lange ondersteuners en deelnemers met goeie dissipline se gesindheid. Een van dié steunpilare wat sedert die begin van die gesinsnaweek betrokke is, Frik Venter het ‘n veldyskas ter waarde van R8 000 gekry,” sê Snyders. Die borge, Makro Polokwane, Volkswagen Polokwane, MGM Motors, BB Truck en Janpret Trekkerdienste is opreg bedank. Pryse is deur Makro en Adendorff Masjinerie geborg. Snyders sê organiseerders sal eersdaags vergader om met die beplanning vir Dieprivier 4x4 Gesinsnaweek 2016 te begin.

But the team from North West managed to score 64 for only five wickets in 13,3 overs. North West team player Masingita Khosa took four wickets in six overs. Limpopo Impalas lost by five wickets. All games on Sunday were also cancelled due to rain. The Impala women’s team was suppose to play a T20 game against North West while the provincial semi finals between Aces Cricket Club and Limpopo Strikers, and Hornbills Cricket Club and Eagles A-team also had to be cancelled until further notice.

Local radio drivers excel at nationals RC MYBURGH >>rc.observer@gmail.com Bushveld Model Racing Club in Polokwane hosted the second leg of the South African Radio Drivers Association (Sarda) sanctioned National 1 to 10 Scale Remote Control Offroad Electric Championships on Saturday and Sunday despite heavy rains which slowed down the progress of the event. The event saw some of the country’s top drivers competing with radio controlled cars around the local track for six minutes per race in eight different classes. According to event organiser and club treasurer Peter Jansen van Vuuren the practice run on Thursday went well and

most drivers got the hang of the track. “Rain during Friday evening delayed the qualifying round on Saturday as the track was wet. Drivers had to wait for it to dry and we only started at 10:00. The day closed with three and half qualifying heats under the belt. More rain caused the finals to start three hours late on Sunday but we managed to finish two final heats,” Jansen van Vuuren said. Local driver Rikus Jansen van Vuuren finished first in the short course trucks two wheel drive, two wheel drive buggies modified and four wheel drive buggies modified class respectively. His brother Waldo took first position in the two wheel drive buggies stock class.

uperbiker Wian Naudé, Limpopo’s only representative in the 450cc Motard short circuit class, continues to bring home the trophies notwithstanding the fact that he is a mere 15 years old. Wian, a learner at Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naudé, has since a young age showed interest in superbikes but his dream to compete at professional level only became reality early last year when he entered for the Short Circuit Superbike Challenge hosted in Polokwane. He finished first in the 250cc class and eighth in the 450cc or so called SuperMoto class. Motor Racing South Africa’s (MotoSA) annual Short Circuit Superbike Racing consists of eight rounds and last year Wian entered the championship only in the fourth round. He quickly made up for lost points and by round seven his national

standing was third in the 250 cc and 11th in the SuperMoto class respectively. In the final round at the Vereeniging Kart Circuit in October Wian’s luck took a turn for the worst when his SuperMoto bike experienced mechanical difficulties. However, he still finished third overall on his Motard. The first round of this year’s challenge was hosted at Zwartkops Raceway at the beginning of March with Wian only participating in the much more competitive SuperMoto class. Bad weather conditions caused him to finish eighth. Round two will be hosted in Vereeniging on 11 April. “I am a petrol head and speed freak. The adrenaline rush on the bike is incomparable,” said Wian about his love for superbike racing, adding that the sport has triggered his enthusiasm and interest since a young age. Wian’s knowledge of the mechanical aspect of bikes is unparalleled with other teenagers. Working and modifying his bike forms a part of his daily routine under the watchful eye of his father. “I love working with my hands and especially fiddling with engines. My father taught me well and I only need his help with some of the more difficult parts,” he said.

His role model is the Italian professional motorcycle racer and multiple MotoGP World Champion, Valentino Rossi. “My dream is to compete in the MotoGP one day. I work and practice hard to get better day by day. Racing is something I love and I want to make a success of it,” he said. Every Sunday Wian takes to the local short circuit on the Silicon road for hours of practice. “I believe in the saying that practice makes perfect. Driver technique is crucial during any race but most important is that the bike should be in top mechanical condition to avoid breakdowns. You should also be focussed and the only thing you should think about, is winning,” Wian explained, adding that one should not be afraid of the bike. The dangers of the sport are something that Wian has not really thought about. “On every new race track I at least fall once during a race. The importance is to fall in such a way to take minimum impact on your body. The race suits are designed to protect the rider from serious injuries,” he added.
