he Makhado based Limpopo Astronomy and Soutpansberg Astronomy Club paid a visit to Mall of the North on Friday to educate interested residents about basic astronomy by handing out educational material and making available a telescope through which some of the heavenly bodies could be looked at.

The outreach is part of a project sponsored by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) through its Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and a number of other venues in the province, including the Kruger National Park will also be visited. Mr Kos Coronaios said the programme is set to get people interested in science and astronomy and to make especially learners realise that you don’t have to be a “nerd” to become an astronomer or scientist. Johannesburg-based musician, Nomfusi paid a brief visit to Limpopo before the Easter weekend to spread the word about her second CD “Take me Home” that was launched by the Universal Music Group at the end of last year. Nomfusi said she was inspired by all the support she receives locally to produce an Afro-pop album in compilation with other local artists for all her fans right here in South Africa. Her first CD “Kwazibani”- Who Knows, launched in 2009 was a fusion of Motown and Sophiatown and catapulted her to immediate stardom. Kwazibani gave Nomfusi the opportunity to travel to Europe to explore the music scene there. Since the very successful launch of Kwazibani, Nomfusi has done ten international tours in Europe and Canada where she has created a large fan base, especially in Europe. She also performed at the world-renowned World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in England in 2011. One of the highlights of her career to date is performing her own show to a large

audience in Munich during 2011. She was recently asked to play a small part in the soon to be launched movie on the life of Nelson Mandela, “The Long Walk to Freedom”, produced by Anant Singh. She portrays the role of a much younger looking Miriam Makeba in the movie. Although Nomfusi only plays a small role in the movie, she says it was a huge honour to be approached to play the role of Miriam Makeba during the early part of Tata Madiba’s life. Now Nomfusi wants to tour South Africa to acquaint the general South African public Take me Home. The album has also been nominated for a South African Musical Award (SAMA), something Nomfusi wants to win at least once in her lifetime. She also received a nomination as the Fun and Fearless Woman for Cosmopolitan magazine for 2013. She is extremely grateful for all the recognition she has received right here in South Africa since the launch of Take me Home in 2012. “Kwazibani gave me exposure internationally as it was categorised as underworld music and more appealing to the overseas market and music festivals. Now with Take me Home I

telescope. Explaining what could be observed he said: “Shortly after sunset Jupiter was visible in the twilight sky and the telescope was pointed at the giant gas planet. Using different eyepiece magnifications the mall’s patrons were treated to beautiful views of the planet with the Giant Red Spot (GRS) visible as well as three of the four Galilean moons. With patrons hurrying to the various restaurants and cinemas the pace once again picked up and I decided to project views of the planet onto the screen, which was followed by the Great Nebula in the constellation Orion, designated M42.” “The four stars making up the famous trapezium in M42 were shown, as was the nebulosity surrounding them. Explaining the difference between emission and reflection nebula, the public were also offered a wide field views of this nebula at the eyepiece. Some of the stars and constellations that were visible were pointed out and clips of how the Moon was formed and Curiosity’s landing on Mars, amongst others were shown,” Coronaios said.

public finance law. “According to the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), issues raised by the Auditor General must be addressed and the Mayor must ensure compliance by the municipality with this subsection. During the Council meeting held last Friday, the Mayor failed to account for this R8,2 million and now seems intent on sweeping it under the carpet. The Mayor’s behaviour is uncalled for and unacceptable as he is abusing his powers as the Mayor,” the statement read. GLM Spokesperson, Ms Lovers Maenetje said the issues highlighted by the AG concerning the irregular expenditure were dealt with already including an appointment of a manager to develop a turnaround strategy to hold service providers accountable.
