BERİL BÜLBÜLOĞLU, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF BÜLBÜLOĞLU VİNÇ MEMBER:

“IMAGINATION OF WOMEN WILL CHANGE THE SECTOR!” STATING THAT SHE SINCERELY BELIEVES THAT IF MORE WOMEN EMPLOYEES UNDERTAKE RESPONSIBILITY WITHIN MACHINERY SECTOR WILL CARRY THE SECTOR BETTER CONDITIONS AND WILL CHANGE VARIOUS DYNAMICS POSITIVELY, BERİL BÜLBÜLOĞLU, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF BÜLBÜLOĞLU VİNÇ MEMBER AND İSTANBUL REGION DIRECTOR SAYS THAT: “I AM SURE THAT WOMEN WILL CATCH THE POINTS WHICH MALE DOMINATION CANNOT SEE OR CATCH FOR YEARS AND THE ORDER OF PRIORITY WILL CHANGE. DIFFERENT PERFECTIVE AND IMAGINATION OF WOMEN WILL EXPAND THIS NARROWED PERSPECTIVE OF TURKISH INDUSTRY.”

S

aying that maintaining one’s existence in this challenging machinery sector requires a strong character and perseverance to not give up easily, Beril Bülbüloğlu, the Board of Directors of Bülbüloğlu Vinç Member and İstanbul Region Director says that: “Gaining experience for the sector was not so easy for me. However, in time, I comprehended the business, the elements consisting the machines which we have manufactured and their features. And I managed this thanks to my will to constantly follow, search and ask.” We talked on the subject that what women should do to be more visible in the sector for Memont Expo readers by starting from Bülbüloğlu’s own observations and experiences. Can we know you better? I was born in Ankara in 1992. I completed my first and secondary educations which I started in METU College by graduating from TED Ankara College High School in 2010. I was in the foreground with • 122

BERİL BÜLBÜLOĞLU

my social life and sports identity rather than academic success during my education years. For the first time I took place in Basketball National Team Camps during my secondary school years. This sport love maintained its existence during my high school years. I was deemed worthy for many awards and experienced various championships. For the first time I became a national team player when I was 15. But I had to give up this sport which I had committed myself because of the injuries. I moved to Istanbul when I got into the department of Business Administration in English Koç University. I completed my university education in 2015. What can you share about the period of taking your current position? Following my education in Business Administration in English in Koç University, I lived for some time in Milano in Italy and both I continued to learn language there and I continued the link between a firm which was planning to make new investments in Turkey and our country. After I turned back to Turkey, I started working in a global agency to carry out advertisement budget planning of a global firm. But after a while because I felt that there were many more thing to do compared to what I had done, I quitted and started to work as Business Development Specialist in Bülbüloğlu Vinç İstanbul Region Directorate in our family company. I still work as a board of director’s member and Istanbul Region Director in our company, but on the other hand I am engaged with foreign sales. How is your ordinary working day? I review the field reports

including detailed information varying from the daily duties of the service team carrying out field research and installed cranes to customer satisfaction in every morning. I carry out the necessary activities to follow the intense businesses by coming together with sales team for various times during the day and to take precaution against any possible malfunctions on time. I make effort enable to transfer information to the related departments and take fast actions; and I try to be in constantly contact with our suppliers in abroad by checking them. I carry out research for markets in the new regions which we determine for the rest of my time. I get necessary firm details and I provide negotiation with them. I have one or two overseas journeys planned in every month. There is an intense program for abroad to gain new countries and customers for our portfolio. In addition, the fairs we have participated and the country visits we have carried out with MAİB constitute the integral part of our business life. Do you experience the difficulties of being a female director in a sector where there is a male dominance? I have been both experiencing and observing the difficulties born by being a woman in this sector since my first day. Machinery sector is a challenging sector but taking place in a firm which carries out manufacturing is much more challenging. It requires you to have strong character and perseverance to not give up easily. I am not a mechanical engineer and I had never interested in this business before two-three years ago. Therefore, gaining

experience for the sector was not so easy for me. The criticizes and comments which I received when I first took a step for this business was focused on that I didn’t receive the education of this business and I couldn’t become successful, follow and maintain this because I am woman. Of course, I still do not think I have all the technical knowledge today. But in time, I comprehended the business, the elements consisting the machines which we have manufactured and their features. And I managed this thanks to my will to constantly follow, search and ask. I am very happy to gain new countries and customers for our company as the result of working hard and with determination in this period which has lasted approximately three years passed in BVS Cranes. Why do fewer women work in the machine manufacturing sector? We are mentioning about a challenging sector, so you can experience deterrent and wearing moments from time to time. Because majority of women have adopted the perspective of the

society, they abstain from taking a step even at the beginning. You cannot have any idea on your potential and cannot be aware of your strength without even trying it. I believe that many women can be very successful in a challenging sector like industry, not only in machinery sector, and they can success everything as long as they really want it. Every business requires lots of satisfaction and patience. However, when women undertake a business, they realize it meticulously and carefully with a will to carry out the best. They love to carry out their business in a more planned and organized way. I have witnessed that machinery manufacture consists of numerous details and great differences can be created by little details. I think these characteristics of women will carry the firms to great successes. I am sure that women will catch the points which male domination cannot see or catch for year, and the order of priority will change. Different perspective and imagination of women will expand this narrowed perspective of Turkish industry. 123 • JANUARY 2019

GREAT SUCCESS IN MACHINERY SECTOR

TURKISH MACHINERY EXPORT INCREASED BY 15.5% FOUR TIMES BIGGER COMPARED TO WORLD AVERAGE IN 2018 WHILE TURKISH MACHINERY PROVIDED MUCH STRONGER SUPPORT TO TURKISH EXPORT IN 2018, 17.1 BILLION DOLLARS OF TURKISH EXPORT WHICH REACHED TO 168.1 BILLION DOLLARS WERE REALIZED BY MACHINERY SECTOR. WHILE WORLD MACHINERY EXPORT INCREASED 4%, TURKISH MACHINERY MUPLIED THE INCREASE IN THE WORLD WITH ITS EXPORT INCREASES BY 15.5% IN 2018.

T

urkish export reached to the most robust export figure of the Republic’s history by catching its goal of • 124

“Year of Records in Export” determined at the beginning of the 2018. Turkish exporters who exported product and service in the value of 168.1

billion dollars made a significant contribution to Turkish economy. Turkish Machinery entered into the year with an export

goal for 18 billion dollars and they continued their route at the first half of the year in compliance with their goals. Although the currency

fluctuations and increased global risks experienced at the second half of the year created barriers for Turkish Machinery to reach their export goal for 18 billion dollars, the machinery exporters who reached to export figure for 17.1 billion dollars realized an increase by 15.5% in export and enabled to increase the machinery share of Turkey within the total export by 10.1%. WE EXPORTED MACHINERY FOR 17 BILLION DOLLARS TO 222 COUNTRIES According to the data by Machinery Exporters’ Association (MAİB), machinery export reached to 17.1 billion dollars with an increase by 15.5% compared to the previous year within the whole 2018. While the predicted machinery import data in 2018 recessed to 26.6 billion dollars with a decrease by 4.7%, foreign trade volume of the machinery sector was carried out as 43.7 billion dollars. Therefore, the foreign trade deficit of machinery sector in 2018 decreased by 27.5% compared to the same term of the previous year and recessed to 9.5 billion dollars. The coverage ratio of export for import in machinery sector in 2018 increased by 64.3%, which is more than 11 points compared to the previous year and reached to 64.3%. The export in Germany which has been the strongest market of Turkish Machinery for a long time increased by 6.1% during the whole 2018 and reached to 2 billion 436 million dollars while the export to USA increased by 22.7% at the same term and reached to 1 billion 275 million dollars. While export increased was realized between 4 and 60 percentages in the list of top

20 countries excluding Iran for which Turkish Machinery carried out export in 2018, it was attention-grabbing that an export increase by 58.7% to Holland, 39.2% to Russia, 23.2% to France and 21.5% to England was realized. Turkish exporters exported Turkish machineries to 222 countries (including free trade areas) in 2018. “OUR MACHINERY EXPORT WILL BE DOUBLED WITHIN FIVE YEARS” While Turkish machinery sector turned out to be one of the three industry groups increasing the their export rate within 2018, Kutlu Karavelioğlu, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of MAİB drawing attention that the total export of the sector which achieved to increase its export by 15.5% reached to 17.1 billion dollars says that: “We are one of the two counties, one of which is China which increased their machinery export mostly in the whole world. Reaching this increase speed of a technology-oriented sector is not an ordinary success. We aim to double our export within five years by maintaining our growth speed in the level of 15% annually and to reach to

34 billion dollars in 2023.” Coverage ratio of export for import has exceeded 64% in the machinery sector which realized the 10.1% of the total export of Turkey in 2018. Average unit prices for per kilogram of the sector which carried out the 60% of its export to European Union and USA reached to 6.1 dollars. MACHINERY EXPORT HAS BEEN GROWN FOR 10 TIMES SINCE 2001 Stating that the numerical effects of the increase for 323 thousands recorded in machinery export in 2018 was 2.3 billion dollars, Karavelioğlu said that they increased the world’s machinery export speed for four times compared to the previous year and evaluated the situation by these words: “We have increased out machinery export for 10 times since 2001 We managed to decrease the negative effects of the fluctuations in the economy with the researches we carried out last year. We prevented importer countries to turn the exchange difference into an opportunity by trusting our technology and we maintained the strength of Turkish machineries without decreasing our

unit prices. We will increase brand consciousness of our machineries with the investments we made in advanced technology and innovation.” MAIN FACTOR OF GLOBAL COMPETITION: TECHNOLOGY Drawing attention that the countries meeting their machinery needs through import will fall behind, Karavelioğlu says that there is technology wars behind the global trade wars and adds that: “We should give up old habits in a terms where the resource costs have been increased through the world. Turkish industry should turn over a new leaf and totally give up on the understanding of importing machinery by running into debt with foreign currency. We don’t approve that our country of which machinery sector’s market growth has increased to 1.9% within the global market has a foreign trade deficit for 10 billion dollars because of machinery import. We believe that the incentive mechanism should be revised in a way that it will grant privilege on local machinery and technology. Developing the machineries with manufacturers and 125 • JANUARY 2019

MOMENT IN ENGLISH producers domestically is the main factor of being local and national.” SMEs WILL GROW WITH SPECIAL MACHINERIES Stating that the increase in the need of special purpose machineries will contribute to the machinery manufacturers developing technology in the level of SME in Turkey, just like it does in the whole world, Karavelioğlu says that: “This term where SMEs are very active is of great opportunity for Turkish economy. We have a sectoral structure which is suitable for manufacturing special purpose machineries and developing technologies in niche fields. Improvement in the legislation will increase the R&D investments of machinery manufacturers. But the market surveillance and control should be realized more effectively. Since market surveillance and control is an expertise area in machinery sector, the experiences of sector representatives should be consulted. The improvement in the investment field will pave the way not only for machinery sector but also Turkish industry at all. The measurements towards decreasing the foreign dependency in supplier branches will turn Turkey into a more competitive and stronger country in the international market.” INCREASE CONTINUES IN SUBSECTORS When the 2018 export data of Turkish machinery manufacturing sector is reviewed in terms of sub-sectors, it has been seen that the highest export in the basis of value was realized in the product group of “air conditioners and refrigerating machines.” Although an export for 2 billion dollars for this product • 126

group had been realized in 2017, the export was increased to 2.28 billion dollars with an increase by 14% in 2018. Also an increase by 4.1% in basis of item in this product group was realized and the value for 505 thousands of tons was reached from the value for 485 thousands of tons in 2017. The product group realizing the highest export in the basis of item in 2018 export turned out to be “washing and drying machines” product group. Although an export for 517 billion dollars for this product group had been realized in 2017, the export was increased to 562 billion dollars with an increase by 8.7% in 2018. The increase in the basis of value for the same product group reached to 12.4% and an export for 1.6 billion dollars was realized. Similarly the product group which increased its export in the basis of value in the previous year was “machines used in construction and mining”, the export increase in this product group was realized as 34.2% and reached

to the export value for 1.22 billion dollars. And the product group which increased its export kilogram value most was “Machines for processing and manufacturing leather.” Export kilogram value for this sub-sector had been 5.6 dollars in 2017; this figure was recorded as 6.6 with an increase by 18% in 2018. The most value-added product group in the total of machinery sector has still been “turbine, turbojet, turbopropeller, hydraulic cylinders” product group. Export kilogram value for this product group has been 39.9 dollars in 2017 and it reached to 40.5 with an increase by 1.5% in 2018. WE HAVE BEEN PREFERRED MUCH MORE IN TARGET MARKETS Turkish Machinery did not decrease its activity in foreign activities and continued its activities for activities of increasing the export and advertising for their target markers. While continuing to reap the fruits of their advertising activities in abroad

in 2018, Turkish Machinery managed to increase its machinery export to Germany by 6.1%, to USA by 22.7%, to Italy by 18.6% in 2017. The sector which realized export increase by 21.5% to England, by 39.2% to Russia, and by 58.7% to Holland increased its competitive capacity in the markets of North Africa and Central Asia. While realizing export increase in the rate of 31.9% to Algeria and 36.7% to Morocco in 2018, Turkish machines was preferred more in the rate of 49.8 in Uzbekistan compared to 2017. On the other hand, Turkish Machinery exported its highest value-added machines in terms of export kilogram value to USA and Germany in 2018, too. Even if the export kilogram value was recessed to 8.6 dollars in machinery export carried out to Germany in this term, the export kilogram value in the machinery export to USA reached to 14.2 dollars with an increase by 10.1% and to Italy reached to 5.1 dollars with an increase by 10.9%.
