“DOMESTIC MACHINERY HIT THE SPOT FOR TURKISH ECONOMY” TURKISH MACHINERY SECTOR INCREASED ITS EXPORT INCOME BY 5.8 PERCENT IN THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF 2019 AND REACHED TO 5.8 BILLION DOLLARS. STATING THAT THE EXPORT PERFORMANCE OF MACHINERY SECTOR IS INCREASING YEAR BY YEAR, KUTLU KARAVELIOĞLU, THE CHAIRPERSON OF MACHINERY EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (MAIB) BOARD OF DIRECTORS EXPRESSED THAT: “WE HAVE TO CATCH UP WITH THE AMOUNT INCREASE IN MACHINERY EXPORT IN THE BASIS OF VALUE. WE ALREADY HAVE THE TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND AND KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO ENSURE THIS. MACHINERY SECTOR SHOULD BE PLACED AMONG THE STRATEGICAL SECTORS AS IT IS DONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD AND SHOULD BE SUPPORTED WITH BOTH INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL POLICIES WITHIN THE SCOPE OF NEW ECONOMIC PROGRAM TO MOVE THIS CAPACITY TO GLOBAL COMPETITION. DOMESTIC MACHINERY HITS THE SPOT FOR TURKISH ECONOMY.”

T

urkish Machinery carried out significant volume of export in the countries of which industries have been highly developed, especially in USA, England, Italy and France in the first four month of the year and increased the amount of machinery it exported throughout the world by 19 percent. The recession in the German industry which is the biggest export market of Turkish machinery sector caused the machinery export carried out for this country to decrease by 8.8 percent. Turkish machinery sector increased its export income in the first four months of the year by 5.8 percent compared to the same period of the precious year with its performance; and the total export volume of the sector increased to 5.8 billion dollars. COVERAGE RATIO OF EXPORT FOR IMPORT REACHED TO 76.5 PERCENT While evaluating Turkish • 102

foreign trade deficit is the national responsible for us all.”

Machinery’s performance in the first four month, Kutlu Karavelioğlu, the Chairperson of MAIB Board of Directors emphasized that the coverage ratio of export for import reached to 76.5 percent in the machinery sector and expressed that: “Domestic machinery hits the spot for Turkish economy. Encouraging domestic industrialists to use domestic machinery and implementing the policies to support the export of all goods and products of advanced technology should be the priority to increase the impact of such situation. To meet the

“DOMESTIC INDUSTRIALISTS SHOULD USE DOMESTIC MACHINERY” Drawing attention that the problems still experienced in manufacturing industry increase the bargain capacity of international customers and the financial statuses of the firms have impact on the prices of the products, Karavelioğlu stated that: “Shrink in the domestic market moved the competition among the firms to the abroad and it caused our machinery to be sold under their actual value in the first part of the year. We see that unit prices in the export decreased by 10 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. We expect this problem to be overcome by the economical measurements to be taken within the scope of the New Economic

Program and the prices will balance at the point which we actually deserve. On the other hand, we still invite our domestic industrialist to use domestic machinery.” Underlining that economic improvement and growth are only possible with the independence of the domestic industrialist on the imported machinery and usage of the domestic machinery in the manufacturing, Karavelioğlu warned that: “Import of the second product to be mostly imported after the energy for Turkey causes us to have a deficit above 10 billion dollars in each year. If the foreign trade deficit for 1.9 billion dollars created in the first four months of the year by import of internal combustion engines, office machinery, pump and compressors, turbine and turbojet maintains its increase in the rest of the year, the burden created by it will have a great impact on our economy.”

MACHINERY EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION REALIZED ITS 18TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY MACHINERY EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (MAIB) CARRIED OUT ITS 18TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY WHERE IT NEGOTIATED ITS 2018 ACTIVITIES AND 2019 WORKING PROGRAM.

18

th Ordinary General Assembly Meeting of Machinery Exporters’ Association was carried out on 25th April in General Secretariat Service Building of Central Anatolian Exporters’ Association (OAİB). 2019 activity program and budget were approved in the meeting where 2018 activities of Board of Directors and Supervisors were acquitted with unanimity. Kutlu Karavelioğlu, the Chairperson of MAİB Board of Directors drew attention that Turkish Machinery caught an export increase by 15% in the last year just like it has done for the last 10 years and said that: “We 10 times multiplied the machinery export in the last 17 years. We increased the share of the machinery out of the total export volume of Turkey to 10%. World machinery could multiply their export volume only for 2 times in the same period. We are speaking of a great achievement here.” in his speech in General Assembly directed by Cenap Rıfat Eke, the Chairperson of Council. Reminding that the machinery is one of the most major

export items of the world in his speech, Karavelioğlu said that: The only capital of machinery manufacturer is human. Stop of a firm producing technology means to miss the people who are producing information and so turning back to the initial point. So, we should never stop. In order not to stop, we have to go on selling products no matter what.” and drew attention that there has not yet any adequate proper understanding towards the machinery sector and added that: “I still face with people

questioning about our engineering skills. Well, how can we sell machinery for 200 million dollars of which kilogram value is 9 dollars to Germany in each month? Why does USA purchase machinery for 100 million dollars of which kilogram value is 14 dollars in each month from us? Even when the average export kilogram value of Turkey is 1.36 dollars! Of course we have engineering capacity and we are increasing our engineering skills and capacity despite everything. Why does

the highest R&D investment and employment realize in machinery but not in other industries?” Hasan Büyükdede, the Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology presented a speech in the General Assembly and Sevda Kayhan Yılmaz, the Deputy Chairperson of MAİB Board of Directors presented the 2018 Activity Report of MAİB to the General Assembly. General Assembly ended upon the financial and administrative acquittance of MAİB. 103 • MAY 2019

ONE TRAIN CAR FOR EACH DAY

DİRİNLER CARRYING OUT MANUFACTURING OF MACHINE TOOL AND PRESS SINCE 1952 IN İZMİR GAINED A DOUBLE ACHIEVEMENT WITH THE BRAND OF DRINNS IN RAIL SYSTEMS. AFTER THE UNDERGROUND LATHE DECREASED THE WORK WHICH LASTS FOR 30 DAYS INTO 10 MINUTES, MANUFACTURING HUGE MILLING MACHINE FOR 65 METERS WHICH MANUFACTURES A TRAIN CAR WITHIN JUST 24 HOURS, DRINNS MADE ITS MARK IN EURASIA RAIL FAIR WHICH IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST RAILWAY FAIRS OF THE WORLD.

E

urasia RailInternational Railway, Light Rail Systems, Infrastructure and Logistics Fair which is considered as the third biggest fair organization in the world within its own category and organized in İzmir between the dates of 10-12 April witnessed a show of strength of Drinns. Drinss, the brand of Dirinler in railway systems introduced both Underground Lathe which decreases a work which lasts for 30 days into 10 minutes and its newly developed “Milling Machine for Aluminum Extrusion Profiles” for 65 meters which can manufacture a car within 24 hours within the scope of the fair. While drawing attention that the spinning of the wheels of metro and tramway in the railway systems in Turkey and world is the most important maintenance service, Nihan Dirin, Dirinler Sanayi Makinaları Board of Directors Member and Dirinler GmbH General Directorate reminded that removing and carrying out maintenance wheels of a single car in the old systems would take at least 1 month and said that: “Underground Lathe by Drinss completes the maintenance of a car within just 10 minutes now. And their controls are made within half an hour and that car can

operate in the railway system within a short time again.” Expressing that Underground Lathe completed in the last October created a great influence in the sector, Nihan Dirin stated that: “As Drinss, we didn’t only focus on the wheels of the car. We launched a brand new research so that Turkey would not have to be dependent on abroad in manufacturing of car and we put forward a national and domestic breakthrough in this journey towards which we stepped out with the aim of strengthening our country in manufacturing of car.” and informed that a car can be manufactured within 24 hours with Milling Machine for Aluminum Extrusion Profiles which has 65-mt-length. Underlying that Turkey imported these two machines

in the past however this has come to an end thanks to the domestic manufacturing, Dirin said that: “Turkey has turned out to export this machine now.” NO OBSTACLE BEFORE THE EXPORT Emphasizing that they attach great importance to domestic and national manufacturing as one of the biggest machinery manufacturers of Turkey, Dirin said that the first usages of the new generation machines have been realized and the first car to be manufactured exported. Drawing attention that the most significant advantage of the new machine is its capacity to not only serve to the railway system but also to the all sections of the industry varying from automobiles to aviation, Dirin stated

that: “Domestic manufacture is a necessity for industrial development, industrial institutions which attach importance and value to their engineers and employees are necessity for domestic manufacture. What lies behind the achievements of Dirinler to break new grounds is that.” TARGET: SMART MACHINES Expressing that they have come a long way in terms of their targets thanks to their R&D center, Dirin stated that: “We launched Industry 4.0 solutions in the last year. PACKAGING MACHINERY EMBRACING WITH ITS TECHNOLOGY CAN BE BASICALY DEFINED AS “THE COVER PROTECTING THE PRODUCT” IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBSERVE BILLION DIFFERENT TYPES OF THEM IN THE NATURE; HOWEVER, THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THEM ALL IS THE SAME: TO ENSURE A PROTECTIVE COVER... INCREASING THE APPEAL OF ALMOST EACH PRODUCT DURING THE SELLING PROCESS AND PROTECTING THEM, PACKAGES HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE AN INDUSTRIAL BRANCH IN TODAY’S WORLD BY THEMSELVES. PACKAGING MACHINERY SEGMENT WHICH ENABLES PRODUCT TO BE PACKAGED AND THEN TRANSFERRED TO THE MARKET MAINTAINS ITS DEVELOPMENT AS BASED ON THE INCREASE IN THE GLOBAL CONSUMPTION. TURKEY RANKS AS THE 19TH IN WORLD LIST WITH ITS EXPORT VOLUME FOR 202 MILLION DOLLARS IN 2018 WITHIN THE PACKAGING MACHINERY SEGMENT WHICH CONSTITUTES A TRADE VOLUME REACHING TO 26 BILLION DOLLARS IN A GLOBAL SCALE.

P

ackaging can be defined as the transforming any product, good, object or item into a form which can be

• 108

transported, stored or recognized by covering, wrapping, packaging with any material or equipment or placing into a container or a place; or

the process of packaging, storing. The main purpose of the packaging is to keep the item or food stuffs sold clean, protect against the external

factors and avoid them from being harmed. Ensuring easiness for purchase or sale for the good is another purpose of the packaging.

The package in today’s world has turned out to be an industry at all as a marketing or sales instrument rather than focusing on its main purpose to protect the good. That making the commercial product look appeal and placing information on it which help customer to recognize the product makes the sale of the product. Products, medical materials and drugs, jewelries, women and men outfits and food products supplied to the market with packages produced radiantly out of various materials are preferred by the customer within the competition market. That a good sold as covered with appealing packages has a higher sale rate compared to a good which is more qualified but not covered or the same good covered imprecisely is the major indicator for such situation. As the machinery which ensures easy packaging for numerous products produced in the factories thanks to the machinery power, the packaging machinery undertakes a significant role in highest rate of preference in products. Vacuum machinery among those which can be diversified according to the package types draws attention because of being the healthiest one for the human health and also the most effective one in protecting the freshness and quality of the products. HISTORY OF THE PACKAGE DATES BACK TO THAT OF HUMANITY It is possible to observe billion different types of packages which we can define as “the cover protecting the product” basically in the nature; however, the primary purpose of them all is the same: To ensure a protective

cover... It is considered that history of manual packaging dates back to that of humanity evolved in parallel with the nature. Trying to protect their foods for the days when the food resources were very rare and founding food was very challenging, humanity got inspired by the nature and thought to cover their food with natural materials such as animal skin; and then put forward the first packaging models covered with herbal fibers and craved out of trees. During the era when the first packaging materials used to be used, the packaging types used in parallel with the increase in the community needs turned out to be diversified. However the packaging materials mostly used by the humanity were glass and soil bottles/containers and wood/thatch chests. The most significant milestones accelerating the processes of packaging and development of the packaging materials were the invention of the paper in AC. 105, generalization of production and consumption after 12th century and political

and economic movements popping up in Europe in 15th century. On the other hand, it is known that the foods were stored in metal containers in Germany in 1400s and this method which was of great importance for nutrition of the armies were tried to be maintained with great efforts. Upon the decrease in the prices of the papers during 1850s, paper were started to be used as packaging material as well. Following the development of the machinery to produce carton box by Francis Wolle an American inventor and ecclesiastics in 1852, machinery producing corrugated cardboard was invented in 1880s and “Quaker Corn Meal” the first breakfast product sold within a carton box folded was put into market in USA in 1884. Using paper and cardboard as packaging material were generalized after that time. Crown cap covering the opening of the bottle which is used in today’s world was patented by William Painter, Irish machinery engineering and inventor in 1892. There have been great

developments in packaging methods, packaging machinery and packaging materials and industry in the recent century; and major improvements have been experienced in the emergence of the plastic materials. MACHINERY MADE BY TAILORS! Packaging machinery segments differentiates from other machinery sectors. The most significant reason of this is because the manufacturing process is carried out upon the orders exclusive to production/storage in the packaging machinery segment. When the limitless options in the diversification of both product and packaging are taken into consideration, the manufacturing of limitless types of packaging machinery might seem possible. Packaging storage systems including the options of glass, plastic, metal, paper, carton packaging materials consist of liquid product machinery, solid product machinery, wet product machinery and dry product machinery. While selecting storage 109 • MAY 2019

MOMENT IN ENGLISH segment in a global scale has been subject of a trade for 50 billion dollars in 2018 according to the data of UN Statistics Department. And Turkey maintains its increase in packaging machinery segment which has an export market for 25.68 billion dollars and import market for 24.28 billion dollars around the world. Turkey carried out export for 202.4 million dollars with an increase by 202.4% in the last year in global export. And Turkey decreased its import by 13 percent and ranked as the 19th in the world import list of packaging machinery with 382.2 million dollars.

system the swiftness of the line is of great importance according to the packaging type to be stored. Glass, metal and solid plastic packages can be stored in much more swift lines compared to the others. Capping, labeling, packing, packaging processes to be required upon the storage are considered as the process following the packaging. WE CARRY OUT EXPORT FOR 133 COUNTRIES The more increases the development level in Turkey and world, the more increases the usage of the packaging material and therefore the demand and production of the packaging machinery accordingly. Since international firms which decreases the costs and have begun to sell much cheaper machinery compared to the previous times have started to follow aggressive sales policies because of the competition • 110

increased in the global scale and economical shrink experienced in especially Europe, the firms producing packaging machinery in Turkey have increased their technology, quality and efficiency research and work in a more professionally. Therefore, Turkish packaging machinery manufacturers carry out export to 133 countries; however, in the export of packaging machinery still is prevailed by Germany and Italy. The impact of Asian countries in the export of parts and sections of packaging machinery maintains its tendency to increase year by year. When the import of packaging machinery is taken into consideration, it is seen that USA, China and Germany are very active. While stating that the primary problem in Turkish packaging machinery sector is born by the predominance of import in old machinery for second hand machinery, the

experts draw attention that this situation both affects the domestic manufacturers and increase the loss in efficiency rates because of the worn and ineffective machinery purchased from abroad. Therefore, underlining the necessity to limit the import in second hand machinery to both protect the domestic manufacturers and maintain the quality and efficiency in the production, the experts draw attention that the problem of packaging machinery segment to provide qualified labor force maintains its current situation still. Especially the number of experienced engineers and constructors, the key factors for R&D and innovation and that of experienced young engineers in machinery design have still been very low in Turkey unfortunately. GLOBAL VOLUME 50 BILLION DOLLARS Packaging machinery

WE EXPORT TO ALGERIA IMPORT FROM ITALY When detailed export and import numbers are reviewed specifically to Turkey, according to TUIK’s 2018 data, we can say that we are carrying out export mostly with Algeria and import mostly with Italy. When the packaging machinery export of Turkey is reviewed according to the countries, according to the TUİK data which is compliance with UN Statistics Department data, Turkey carried out export for 202.4 million dollars with increase by 11.8% in 2018 and Algeria has taken its place at the first rank in the list of top 10 counties which we carried out the most export for 17.87 million dollars with increase by 23.8%. While Iraq is following this country with export for 14.7 million dollars with increase by 4.8%; it carried out export for 12.17 million dollars with an increase by 17 percent. And the export increase for 21.7 and 33 percent in Germany and Italy subsequently draw attention in that period.
