ZEYNEP ERKUNT ARMAĞAN, MAİB BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER:

“FEMALE ENGINEERS SHOULD SAY ‘I WILL DO!’” TURKISH MACHINERY CAME TOGETHER WITH STUDENTS AT HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT “WITH MIGHT AND MAIN, WITH FEMALE MACHINERY” WHICH TURKISH MACHINERY REALIZED TO ENCOURAGE WOMEN TO WORK IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. DRAWING ATTENTION THAT REPRESENTATIVES OF MACHINERY SECTOR FOCUS ON INCREASING THE NUMBER OF FEMALE ENGINEERS IN THE SECTOR IN EACH PLATFORM THEY HAVE PARTICIPATED IN, ZEYNEP ERKUNT ARMAĞAN, MAİB BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER SAID THAT: “WHILE THE HALF OF THE POPULATION IS FEMALE, NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE REFLECTION OF THIS FACT IN THE MACHİNERY SECTOR INDICATES THE DEFICIENCY OF THE SECTOR. A SECTOR UPON WHICH THE SENSITIVITY, CARE, ELABORATION AND AESTHETICAL SENSE OF WOMAN DO NOT REFLECT CANNOT BE CONSIDERED AS A WHOLE. WE BELIEVE OURSELVES TO OVERCOME THIS DEFICIENCY WITH A MORE STRONG APPROACH TO LIFE AS THE NEW GENERATION.”

T

urkish Machinery came together with students at Hacettepe University on February 7th within the scope of the project “With Might and Main with Female Machinery” which Turkish Machinery realized to increase the number of female employment in the sector. Zeynep Erkunt Armağan, MAİB Board of Directors Member, Selçuk Pehlivanoğlu, the Chairman of Board of Directors of Turkish Education Association, Yalçın Paslı, the Coordinator of TEZMAKSAN Machinery Customer Relations and Nahar Aydın Baydık, Erkunt Tractor Corporate Performance Director shared their experiences with engineering students. “AN INDIVIDUAL SHOULD COMPETE WITH THEMSELVES FIRSTLY.” Starting her speech with the words: “March 8th symbolizes a struggle by which we stand for receiving the • 102

human rights and in return of our works in an equal way. I congratulate all women who have endeavored to exist and bring into existence in this world with my whole heart.” Zeynep Erkunt Armağan, the Machinery Exporters’ Association Board of Directors Member expressed

that while the half of the population is female, this fact’s not reflecting upon the machinery sector shows the deficiency of the sector and stated that women endeavor, work and existence should be understood in a correct way and valued. And she continued her words:

“Since women are in a smart, patient, careful, elaborative nature, they obtain significant achievements in their professional life. Female engineers should realize this power which is already within themselves and take a step forward, then say ‘I will do.’ instead of ‘I will do as

well.’ ‘I will do as well’ shows a competition with another individual; however, an individual should only compete with themselves. I know that when female engineers once breath the air of manufacturing, they will not give up on this.” and then she pointed out that manufacturing, brining into existence, creating, transforming and observing how the manufactured product has affected the consumer create a huge enthusiasm and satisfaction and expressed that: “Female engineers should experience this feeling, they shouldn’t

get scared of and should rely on themselves. Women can do anything if she really wants to; with this understanding, as the machinery saying ‘with might and main’ I hope women endeavor, work and especially existence will be understood properly and valued.” “DON’T WASTE YOUR VALUABLE DIPLOMAS IN INVALUABLE WORKS” Selçuk Pehlivanoğlu, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish Education Association expressed that the

understanding of inequality places women in a point where she has to lose and this understanding should be diminished in his speech. Stating that women are more advantageous in analytic thinking compared to men, Pehlivanoğlu said that: “Women shouldn’t be afraid of being in factories. If someone claims that ‘This job is man thing.’ against the female engineers, she can only look down on him.” Collecting the life stories of successful female industrialists in the machinery manufacturing sectors into

a book named ‘Did You Just Say That Women Cannot be Industrialist?’ published in the last months, Yalçın Paslı, TEZMAKSAN Machinery Customer Relations Coordinator called out for youth in his speech and gave the advice that “Don’t waste your valuable diplomas in invaluable works.” Paslı expressed that: “We are in need of human resource for manufacturing. Even Germany of which industry has come a long way experiences this problem as well. You are of vital importance in terms of our country’s future. Take role in the manufacturing side so that our country can develop much more.” Emphasizing that women are elaborative in their works, Paslı underlined that an increasing demand has taken place in the female employment in the industry especially in the recent years. Bahar Aydın Baydık, the Erkunt Tractor Corporate Performance Director emphasized that women are very successful in foreseeing the cause and effect relation which is of great importance in the engineering field and shared her personal experiences with the participants.

TOTAL MACHINERY EXPORT IN THE FIRST TWO MONTHS OF THE YEAR WAS FOR 2,7 BILLION DOLLARS

MACHINERY RANKED AS THE FIRST IN THE EXPORT TO USA

WHILE THE TURKISH MACHINERY EXPORT WAS FOR 1,4 BILLION DOLLARS IN FEBRUARY, KUTLU KARAVELİOĞLU, THE CHAIRMAN OF MACHINERY EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS SAID THAT: “THE SHARE OF MACHINERY WITHIN THE TOTAL IMPORT WHICH USA CARRIED OUT FROM TURKEY WAS ABOVE 15 PERCENT JUST LIKE IN GERMANY. OUR R&D INVESTMENTS AND INCREASING TECHNOLOGY LEVEL ARE PROTECTING US AGAINST CYCLICAL DEVELOPMENTS.”

M

achinery sector which carried out export for 1,4 billion dollars in February moved its total export to 2,7 billion dollars with an increase by 8,1 percent at the end of the first two months compared to the same period of the last year. Increases over 20 percent in machinery export into USA, England, France and Spain were observed at the end of the two-month-period. On the other hand, expressing that they have been affected by the shrinkage of the manufacturing experienced at the last period in German industry which has a share by approximately 15 percent within the total export in Turkish machinery sector, Kutlu Karavelioğlu, the Chairman of Machinery Exporters’ Association the Board of Directors stated that: “Industrial manufacturing in Germany which is the biggest economy of Europe recessed in the last four months successively when the data were announced. Decrease of the country in manufacturing of capital and consumption products directly affected the machinery export which we have carried out to Germany. • 104

USA. Since the added value of our machinery is high, we will be one of the activity fields which have been least affected by USA’s decision of excluding Turkey from GTS Programme.

However, Germany is not only a target market for us but also a significant door opening towards world machinery foreign trade. Even if the world trade slows down, because it continues to grow, our machinery export continues to increase along with our targets.” WE WILL BE THE SECTOR WHICH HAVE BEEN LEAST AFFECTED FROM THE GTS REGULATION Expressing that they efficiently consider the developed countries as alternative

markets, especially USA in this period, Karavelioğlu said that: “Turkish machinery sector ranked as the first in the export into USA following Germany. Share of the machinery within the total export which USA carried out from Turkey increased above 15 percent just like in Germany. While our R&D investments and increasing technology level are protecting us against the cyclical developments, Turkish machinery finds purchaser for 15 dollars per kilogram in

PURCHASE BOARDS OF 23 COUNTRIES WILL BRING TOGETHER IN ISTANBUL Stating that they have been carrying out special researches for WIN EURASIA which will be organized on 14-17 March and IDMA fairs which will be organized on 20-23 March, Kutlu Karavelioğlu said that: “While representing our country in international fairs as Turkish Machinery, we attach great importance for hosting international firm representatives in our country and demonstrating the actual power of our sector in place. We will host 75 firms from 23 different countries in aforementioned two fairs which will be organized in Istanbul in March. We will carry out special qualified purchase board organization from Germany during WIN EURASIA as well. We believe that these researches will increase our machinery export volume during the rest of the year.”

TWO MORE DESTINATIONS ARE ADDED FOR 2019 FAIR MARATHON FAIR PARTICIPATIONS WHICH MACHINERY EXPORTER’ ASSOCIATION (MAİB) CARRIED OUT WITHIN THE SCOPE OF INTERNATIONAL ADVERTISING ACTIVITIES WILL CONTINUE DURING 2019 WITHOUT SLOWING DOWN. MAİB WHICH LAUNCHED NUMEROUS RESEARCHES WITHIN THIS SCOPE MONTHS EARLIER FOR PARTICIPATION INTO VARIOUS FAIRS CONTINUES ITS ENTERPRISES FOR NEW FAIR PARTICIPATIONS. LATEST TWO FAIRS ADDED TO 2019 SCHEDULE OF MAİB WITHIN THIS SCOPE TURNED OUT TO BE INNOPROM AND BICES FAIRS.

I

NNOPROM fair which undertook the organization of national participation of Machinery Exporters’ Association will be realized on 8-11 July in Ekaterinburg in Russia. While planning that the official launch of the fair where Turkey will participate as the partner country is carried out by Vladimir Putin, Russian President and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkish President; 600 firms from 20 countries and more than 50 thousands of professional business people are expected to visit the fair which will be organized 10th times in this year. Protocols regarding the participation of Turkey in INNOPROM which is considered as the most significant industry fair of Russia as the partner country and national participation organization of MAİB were signed at the end of the last year and Aleksey Gruzdev, the Deputy Minister

of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation said that they expected numerous Turkish fairs to participate in the fair which they will realize with Turkey and they will work in a coordinated way with Turkey in case of any problems which have potential to show up because of the intense participation. Denis Manturov, the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation expressed that: “The potential of the scientific, technical and industrial cooperation between our countries will be emphasized in this fair” in his explanation which he provided to official website of the INNOPROM fair. BICES fair which will be organized in Beijing, the capital of China, on 4-7 September is considered one of the most significant fair organizations of the world including business, construction and construction machinery and

mining machinery sectors. While plans for national participation organization for BICES fair are started by MAİB, China which is the biggest construction equipment and fork-lift machinery market of the world draws attention with its noticeable export volume for construction and fork-lift machinery. This significantly causes Turkish manufacturers to have an opportunity for obtaining a market and carrying out export. BICES fair which is organized in every other year and will be organized 15th times in this year is an organization which appeals to the domestic market of China fully and also it will host the participation of various construction machinery manufacturers which are known in a global scale.

Therefore we can easily say that BICES fair towards which Chinese purchasers and constructors show high interest is considered as the most suitable organization for the participation of Turkish manufacturers who would like to enter into Chinese market and take a role. The firms which will participate in INNOPROM and BICES fairs within the scope of national participation can use the incentives which are provided for the international national fair participations by the Ministry of Trade within the decision numbered 2017/4. Since INNOPROM fair takes place in the “Prestigious Fairs” list, applications for incentives will be evaluated within this scope. 105 • MARCH 2019

NET EXPORTER SEGMENT: WOODWORKING MACHINERY SECTOR WOODWORKING MACHINERY SEGMENT WHICH CARRIES OUT THE MANUFACTURE OF PRODUCTS WELCOMING US IN ALMOST EACH ASPECT OF DAILY LIFE IN A HIGHLY DEVELOPED STATUS IN TODAY’S WORLD. TODAY WE ARE IN THE POSITION OF NET EXPORTER IN WOODWORKING MACHINERY WHICH CONSISTS OF ONE OF THE NUMEROUS IMPORT ITEMS OF TURKEY IN THE OLD DAYS. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEMS OF ADDED VALUE PRODUCTION AND SCALE ECONOMY OF WOODWORKING MACHINERY SEGMENT ARE STILL IN QUESTION. WHILE TURKEY HAS BEEN PROVIDING CURRENT SURPLUS IN WOODWORKING MACHINERY WHICH CONSISTS OF ECONOMICAL VOLUME FOR 15 BILLION DOLLARS IN A GLOBAL SCALE FOR 2 YEARS, TURKISH WOODWORKING MACHINERY SEGMENT IN 2018 RANKED AS THE 13TH WITH ITS 102,5 MILLION DOLLARS EXPORT IN THE GLOBAL EXPORT RANKING.

W

oodworking machinery and side industries segment which is the driving • 108

force in meeting the needs of machinery of Turkish furniture sector increases its success graphic with its advanced technology

year by year. Woodworking machinery segment which turned out to be an industry at the beginning of the 1980s with the launch of furniture

sector has come a long way within years by harmonizing its past experiences with its technology. Woodworking machinery segment which

is the driving force in the development of the sector to meet the needs of machinery of furniture sector which is its main domestic sector sells machinery not only to domestic market but also to various countries in the world thanks to its production and trade activities. With the effect of MDF in the manufacture which caused revolutionary effect on furniture at the beginning of 1980s, market in Turkey started to develop. Value added products of which kilogram value is high was started to be manufactured with the power provided by the side industry which supported woodworking machinery segment and the international exporter firms which started to carry out manufacture in Turkey in 2000s. With its advanced technology, increasing production and export activities, the contribution of woodworking machinery and side industries segment in Turkish machinery sector is increasing year by year. 90% OF MANUFACTURERS ARE SMALL SCALED When we reviewed the structure of Turkish forestry products and furniture industry, we observe that 90% of the facilities consist of small-scaled facilities and most of them cannot follow the developed industry understandings such as production method and planning, quality control, management and marketing, etc. because of their increase investment costs, especially. This structure is indicated as one of the most significant parameters affecting the development of woodworking machine segment in a negative way. While the machines

manufactured in woodworking machinery segment which center upon Bursa, Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir throughout Turkey are traditional woodworking machines, when the qualification of the personnel are reviewed, especially decrease number of engineers employed are drawing attention. On the other hand, that the manufacturers of woodworking machinery in Turkey do not complete their corporate procedure fully is considered as the main problems of R&D culture’s not gaining strength in the sector and low price / insufficient services. GLOBAL VOLUME 15 BILLION DOLLARS Furniture and wood sector is a sector which has a manufacturing activity throughout the world. Furniture manufacture can be said to be carried out in 81 districts in Turkey. Therefore, woodworking machinery has a main effect on the sector and so it carries out a potential to create a significant economic volume within itself. Woodworking machinery segment in a global scale

has been subject of a trade for 15 billion dollars in 2017 according to the data of UN Statistics Department. And Turkey maintains its fast increase in woodworking machinery segment which has an export market for 77,44 billion dollars and import market for 7,16 billion dollars around the world. The most powerful countries in woodworking machinery export are Germany with 1,83 billion dollars and an increase by 11,4 percent; China with 1,33 billion dollars and an increase by 4,5 percent; Italy with 1,32 billion dollars and an increase by 6,5 percent; and Turkey ranked as the 13th with its export for 83,8 million dollars and an increase by 18,6 percent. This subsegment in Turkey achieved to move its export to 102,5 million with a high increase by 22,3 percent in 2018. At the same period, Turkey gained another achievement by limiting its import in this subsegment. Turkey woodworking machinery sector which carried out import for 67,7 million dollars in 2017 experienced a shrinkage by 9,7 percent, it decreased this

figure in 2018 and its import reached to 61,5 million dollars with a recession with 9,1 percent. Thus export coverage ratio for import of Turkish woodworking machinery segment which provided current surplus for the last 2 years up to 160 percent in 2018. The most powerful purchaser countries in a global scale in 2017 are USA with 1,36 billion dollars and an increase by 10,7; China with 530,4 million dollars and an increase by 60,2 percent and Germany with 387,4 million dollars and an increase by 11,9 percent. EXPORTING TO ALGERIA IMPORTING FROM ITALY When detailed export and import numbers are reviewed specifically to Turkey, according to TÜIK’s 2018 data, we can say that we are carrying out export mostly with Algeria and import mostly with Italy. When the export of Turkey is reviewed according to the countries according to the TÜİK data, Turkey carried out export for 102.5 million dollars with increase by 22,3% in 2018 and Algeria has taken 109 • MARCH 2019

dollars. An increase for 46,9 percent was experienced in the product group “planning/ milling/molding machinery processing materials such as tree, mushroom” numbered 846592 GTİP which ranked as the third and export value for 14,7 million dollars was reached compared to 2017. The most powerful export increase in 2018 was experienced in the product group “Processing centers for hard materials” numbered 846520 GTİP. While an increase for 123,5 was experienced in this product group compared to 2017, machinery with the value for 1,7 million dollars were exported. EXPORT IS INCREASING IMPORT IS DECREASING Furthermore, the data published by TÜİK point out that Turkish import decreased to 61,5 million dollars with a shrinkage for 9,2 percent in 2018, which is in compliance with the data of UN Statistics Department. According to TÜİK data, in this list consisting of the countries with

which Turkey has carried out import, Italy ranked as the first with 27,9 million dollars with an increase by 6,9 percent while the import with China which raked as the second was recorded as 12,5 million dollars with an increase 8 percent. The import which was carried from Germany which ranked as the third in the list was experienced as 10,6 million dollars by decreasing 47 percent. 10 PERCENT GROWTH IS EXPECTED IN 2019. As known, Industry 4.0 continues to draw attention as the most significant industrial enterprise of our era which forces all manufacturing industries to undergo a serious transformation. Woodworking machinery comes to the forefront as a segment which is closely related to the automation and Industry 4.0 process within this scope. Since the work and material processed are very precious, maintaining the activities are of crucial importance for woodworking

machinery segment. Decreasing the labor force cost and energy consumption of the machinery and shrinking the manufacturing area in a manufacture field where the workmanship is really dense can be possible by only realizing the automation. Using full automation has positive effect on very stage varying from manufacturing performance to manufacturing capacity. Stating that the automation is obligatory for the firms operating in the woodworking machinery segment, Mustafa Sabri Erol, the Chairman of Board of Directors of Woodworking Machinery And Side Industries Businessmen Associations (AİMSAD), says that: “We should improve the qualified product manufacturing in our sector promptly, develop machinery which are compatible with the Industry 4.0 which is valid for all over the world and increase the added values of these machinery with automation and software.” Stating that AİMSAD has focused on researches for corporation of the firms and adopting the R&D culture along with this purpose, Erol underlines that they will continue to carry out projects for increasing the qualified employee power and sustainable growth which is compatible with scale economy. Expressing that they have been planning to overcome the problems experienced in the domestic market by focusing on the export in 2019, Erol says that: “Even if we observe a little decrease in export in January in 2019, I think we will complete 2019 with a new record. I think of an increase between 10 and 20 in manufacturing and export, generally and I believe the import will decrease a little bit as well.
