THE SECTOR CREATING A REVOLUTION IN INDUSTRY: BOILERS AND PRESSURE VESSELS Industrial revolution is defined as a transition from hand power to the use of machinery in production and the use of steaming machines in production is accepted to have started the industrial revolution through the end of 18th century. In this sense, the boiler industry, which has been active for 300 years, maintains its advantageous position in terms of knowledge and experience compared to the other industrial sectors.

T

he first use of central heating boilers in both industrial and power systems in Turkey dates back to the end of the 19th century. Although resources contain information on boiler production in Istanbul at the beginning of the 1900s, SilahtaraÄ&#x;a Plant which started operating in 1914 is important for being Turkey's first power plant containing the first power boilers. About the same time, it is known that heating boilers started to be used in large

124

public buildings, palaces and large apartment buildings for heating. The first important steps towards the future of the industry in the journey of production which began to gain momentum in the 1950s were taken in the 1960s with the start of high-efficiency boiler production with German licenses. This move was a leap for the industry, and Turkish boiler masters started to compete with their foreign colleagues in the sense of technical knowledge and started to build their own companies in 1980. Thus,

the boiler industry, which entered a rapid growth phase, began to focus on the importance of standardization, inspection and quality control along with increased production. In this process, the sector that established the Association of Boiler and Pressure Vessels Manufacturers (KBSB) in 1985 continued to take important steps in the lead of KBSB in order to establish a legal legislation and to reach national and international standards. CE CERTIFICATE PAVES THE WAY FOR EXPORT RECORD With the introduction of CE directives with the start of European Union process, became the most important driving force for the establishment of quality, efficiency, and safety in boiler manufacturing. The introduction of safety and quality directives in the sector lead to strong increases in export figures, and the spread of boiler usage in the world and a preference for central heating systems in developed countries, especially Europe, were important developments that opened the doors for Turkish boiler manufacturers.

Likewise, the obligation to use boilers and burners to heat areas that are 2 thousand square meters and above in the country triggered both demand and quality production, and also made it possible for the industry to use new technologies rapidly. This led to the rapid integration of new applications such as alternative fuel systems and condensing boiler technologies into the sector. GLOBAL BOILER EXPORT IS 15 BILLION DOLLARS World global boiler export is progressing at a level of $15 billion, according to 2016 figures from the UN Statistics Division, and Turkey took eighth place in the global market. Boiler export of Turkey which is 451.7 million dollars received a share of 2.9 percent from the total boiler export. Although UN Statistics Division's 2017 official figures have not been finalized yet, the increase of Turkey's boiler export by 17.5 percent in 2017 shows that the share taken from the global market will be over 3 percent. China ranks 1st in world global boiler export. China, which was close to $2.4 billion worth of export in 2015, increased its export to $2.43 billion in 2016, followed by Germany with $2.2 billion worth of exports, Italy with $1.6 billion and South Korea with $1.1 billion worth of export. The exports of the United States, which took the fifth place in the list was 931.7 million dollars in 2016, while the Netherlands export was 536.5 million dollars, France's exports 508.2 million dollars, Japan 390.8 million dollars, and India 374.3 million dollars. WE EXPORT TO ALMOST ALL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD Today, the boiler and pressure vessel manufacturers are competing with leading countries of the

sector such as Germany, Italy, USA and China, and prove their success by selling products to almost every corner of the world. On the other hand, the increase in the use of LPG in energy production continues to feed demand in the cryogenic tank market in foreign markets, which has great potential as a new and productive market for Turkish manufacturers. EXPORT INCREASED BY 17,5 PERCENT IMPORT DECREASED BY 60 PERCENT While the success and stability in the sector continue to increase, it is emphasized that a positive trend is observed in the year we are in as well. The boiler and pressure vessels sector, the main goal of which is to reduce imports, is making every effort to be able to avoid the preference and use of imported products. According to TĂœÄ°K data, the exports in boiler industry which were 441.1 million dollars in 2016 rose to 518.6 million dollars with an increase by 17.5 percent, and even

more importantly, the 60 percent decrease in Turkey's boiler imports attracts attention as an important development in terms of reducing the current deficit. Also in the boiler product group, kilogram value of the export, which was $7.5 in 2016, rose to $8.1 in 2017. The sector exported 59 thousand tons of products in quantity basis in 2016 and reached 64 thousand tons with an increase of 7.7 percent in the past year. The main export route of the sector was European countries again in the past year. While the country to which the industry exports the most continues to be Germany, and exports to this country have fallen from $98.3 million in 2016 to $ 96 million in 2017. While the second country to which the industry exports the most was the UK, $49.3 million worth of products were exported to this country in 2017 with a loss of 18.4 percent. Exports to China, ranking third in the list, rose to 36.8 million dollars by an increase of 10 percent in 2017.

“WE ARE GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN EXPORT WITH NATIVE FRAME” Volkan İtfaiye is preparing to export its first native production 8x8 frame fire truck. The first native 8x8 frame, developed by native engineers with a five-year R&D project, has been put into practice with an investment of 10 million Euros.

T

he first native production frame developed by Volkan İtfaiye was displayed at the public meeting held at Selçuk Airport. At 1500 horsepower, the vehicle with double engine technology reaches speed from zero to 80 kilometers in 21 seconds. With its advanced electronics and software infrastructure, the vehicle is able to maintain its mobility even in challenging conditions with off-road capability. Volkan İtfaiye Board Chairman İsa Tecim, in the speech he made about the first native production 8x8 frame fire truck at the introductory meeting, underlined that Volkan İtfaiye, which is among the world's brands in its sector, exports fire engines to nearly 40 countries today. GOAL IS 75 PERCENT EXPORT SHARE Volkan İtfaiye General Manager Yaşar Tecim emphasized that Volkan İtfaiye has achieved many firsts in Turkey such as the first fire truck with 55-meter ladder, the first fire pump, the first major fire-fighting aircraft and the first 8x8 special purpose frame trucks projects, and added that they are proud of the fact that they contrib-

126

uted to the settlement of the current account of the country with their export income. Yaşar Tecim stated that their goal is to increase the export share in the turnover to 75 percent within three to four years, saying "Our target is export. In the next three to four years, we want to increase the export share in our turnover to 75 percent. After that, our exports will increase exponentially. 45 percent of our turnover comes from export. We aim to reach 150 million TL of turnover until the end of 2018." Tecim noted that they are the only company specializing in the field of a fire truck in vehicle-top equipment industry in Turkey, saying "The project on which we have been working for has been put

into practice with 40 native engineers of ours. We invested 10 million Euros for this project only. We have the only R&D center dedicated to designing firefighting and rescue design. We spend 5 percent of our turnover on R&D. We will increase this rate further to make big breakthroughs that will transform our industry." Stating that they offered different versions of the vehicle, such as 6x6 and 4x4, to various airports from Malaysia to Morocco and from India to Tunisia, Tecim said that they are producing two vehicles of 6x6 version which the United Arab Emirates is going to donate to Yemen Aden Airport, and that they have negotiations ongoing with airports in Romania and Estonia.
