n order to support women’s participation in the machine sector, the Turkish Machinery and Turkish Machinery Federation (MAKFED) has publicly presented their project ‘By women in machinery, by main force’ in Istanbul, Turkey. Universities will be visited in Konya, Kayseri, Bursa, Gaziantep, and Manisa, within the scope of the initiated project to encourage women to take part in the machinery industry. The inspirational stories of women working in the machine sector will be told to students, and young entrepreneurial women at events. Women entrepreneurs will be encouraged to take a part in the machinery industry. THE MACHINE SECTOR IS OPEN FOR WOMEN Adnan Dalgarıran, Chairman of MAİB and MAKFED made a speech at publicity meeting on March 2. “The machinery industry attaches great importance to existence of women in business life. Turkey needs more qualified human resources and engineering skills everyday with the technological transformation of the indus-

try. There are sectors in Turkey that have not yet come out of industry 2.0 while talking about industry 4.0 around the world. We have been given a lot of resources in R&D, but we still are taking out few patent. We have more universities than before but we are having difficulty in producing technological products. The main basis of work piece is qualified person. If we can increase the female working population by the male rate, we can reach more quali-

fied human resources in the pool of human sources. We always encourage people in this framework. However only 1 per cent of graduated mechanical engineers work in the industry.” said Adnan Dalgakıran. TARGET CITIES ARE READY Sevda Kayhan Yılmaz, member of board of MAİB, and supervisory board president of MAKFED gave a speech at launching meeting of ‘By women in machinery, by main

force’ project. “In the first year of the project, it is targeted that the machine manufacturing industry will be developed. By going from Konya to Kayseri, from Manisa to Bursa and Gaziantep, we will bring young women to machinery sector. We believe that there will be more women in the machinery industry between future engineers and managers. Our industry is full of inspirational stories for women. We will be a model to all sector with new success stories we will write together.” said Sevda Kayhan Yılmaz. TOUCH THE LIFE BY MANUFACTURING MACHINE Zeynep Erkunt Armağan, member of board of MAİB, gave presentation during introductory meeting. Women have all the qualities of production and management with their fertile, meticulous, patient and detailed characters. We want women to realize this power. The women who breathe the dust of production, succeed in management, and know better what she does. Our call is that they should not limit them in a few sectors. Our entire struggle is to say to young women ‘Get up to make the best of, come see the production, breathe this air, and understand how fabulous the production is.’ Let’s not forget that the machine is the heart of life, and the machine is also a touch of vitality.” said Zeynep Erkunt Armağan.

WHAT DO WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS SAY? Successful women entrepreneurs in Turkey, stresses the importance of increasing the number of women entrepreneurs and women workers in their short presentations. “The thing I regret most is not to become an engineer. I love engineer women. They think very analytically. Engineering is not only professional, allows looking at life from varied perspective. I am the daughter of an ambitious father who is full of business affection. I gave birth on Saturday and my father said to me, ‘Congratulations! You gave birth on Saturday and come back to work on Monday’ It seemed like a joke but I was at work on Monday. I like it too.” told Hülya Gedik, chairwoman of Gedik Holding. Zuhal Gözüküçük, chairwoman of Gözüküçük Machine, shared her story of becoming an industrialist when she was agricultural engineer. “It is important for women to take part in production, but it is more importantly taking a

LOVE OF THE ENGINEERING STUDENT IS MACHINE On the other hand during the introductory meeting, the university students took the floor and explained why they chose engineering departments. “Women should not be restricted to any field. I did not accept any restriction during my life. Engineering was one of the basic disciplines I could do. My father always supported me in this field. The machine is the basis of production. The only need for young women should be courage and freedom.” expressed Türkü Açar, Boğaziçi University mechanical engineer student. “I have been with inside machine since I was a kid so I dreamed of machines. With this excitement, I would like to be involved in next projects in the field of social entrepreneurship.” said Göksu Gökcen, Koç University electrical and electronics engineering. “Women carry all kinds of qualifications for competition in the field of engineering. The important thing is to keep the people with these qualifications in the sector, while ensuring the participation of women in business life. We are delighted with there projects that support women’s participation in the sector” expressed Nazlı Kaya, Boğaziçi University mechanical engineering student.

EXPORT’S HEAVY-DUTY The Turkish machine sector that is the sixth largest in Europe, is keeping on growth. The Turkish industry, which increased its export 700 percent last 15 years, export 2.3 million tons machine to more than 200 countries. How has the heavy machine been exported around the world? Does sector of the heavy shipping and project shipping satisfy the need for the Turkish machine sector in Turkey? Are infrastructure services sufficient? Which difficulties face the machine sector that struggle against difficulties along process?

D

emand contraction in the global economy continues to have an impact on the growth processes of countries. China that is the dynamo of the world is slowing down with the butterfly effect on the rest of the world but this stagnation will not last long. As the world population of 7 billion continues to increase, it is expected to reach 8 billion by 2025. Therefore, the expectation of an increase in consumption and production sectors inevitably stands in the forefront. The share of the machinery manufacturing sector still over 1 trillion dollars in the world trade. 12 per cent of global export is thro-

124

ugh value-added production of the machinery-manufacturing sector. The situation is Turkey is no different: Last year, 9.5 per cent of Turkey’s total exports were realized by machinery sector. The export growth of the machine sector in 15 years is close to 700 per cent. The volume of exports of machines continued to increase over the years. The Turkish industry exported 2.3 million tons machine to more than 200 countries last year. LEGISLATION PROBLEMS IN THE MACHINE SHIPPING As the industry grows, it also triggers the development of many industries. One of the growing sectors in this direction is the heavy shipping/project-shipping sector.

Moving all over the world of exceptional size and weight machine that come out of the factory with labour requires preparation processes and planning. And the operational challenges are quite high. As well as the adequacy of the shipping equipment, the level of education of human resources entrusted to million dollars machines, compatibility of the shipping infrastructure services with European and other regions of the world. Fatih Şener, Chief Executive Officer of the International Shipping Association (UND), said that there are many companies specializing in project shipping in Turkey. “Many companies have technical knowledge and equipment to be ranked first in Europe and other geographies. The problems that our firms face are not usually due to their falling, but to the lack of legislation and practice in Turkey. The deficiencies undermine the commercial activities of the companies in the shipping sector as well as Turkey’s logistical performance and its efforts to become a base.” Told Mr. Şener. EXPERIENCED HUMAN RESOURCE NEEDED Emre Eldener, Chairman of Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers (UTİKAD), said that at least 30

of 400 UTİKAD members have regularly provided services in the field of project shipping. “In addition to the shipping companies, heavy shipping and cranes companies that provide services in their own field in the sector, ship-owners carrying project loads, port lashing, and handling companies are also included.” Said Mr. Eldener. “Qualified human resources are very important criterion in sustainable growth of sector as every sectors. The companies that carry out exclusive shipping and project shipping must first have an expert and dynamic staff. The equipment and vehicles should be suitable for heavy shipping, the employees should know the procedures of the countries by doing the road analysis, knowing engineering and other countries, doing the time management. The machine manufacturers must pay attention to these features when choosing companies to collaborate with. However different modes of shipping may be needed during transport. It is significant to make sure that the staff who will do the planning will make every transfer until the last detail. Company officials need to explain all the details of the client process.” Stressed Emre Eldener. CONTACT IS SIGNIFICANT Özgür Özkan, director of Horoz Bolloré Logistics Project Shipping, paid attention to the importance of communication between machine manufacturers and companies shipping Turkish machine. “The more accurate and detailed, the machine manufacturers inform the carrier about the cargo to be carried, the more successful the planning and the result of the shipment will be. In this context, it is important for machine manufacturers to have a good description of the product being transported first and to prepare a detailed file before the shipping request is made.” said Özgür Özkan.

PROCESS MANAGEMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT IN HEAVY SHIPPING There are a few factors that can magnify the project transport that makes up 10 per cent of the Turkish logistics sector: Economic stability and accompanying investment confidence, transport and infrastructure projects planned by the state itself or purchased by tender for construction, energy production deficit, investment, and infrastructure activities in neighbouring countries. On the other hand, legislation is one of the biggest issues facing the sector while increasing the growth rate. While the number of firms specializing in these vehicles, which are realized with special vehicles and equipment, has increased over the years, new industry and energy investments especially for the development of the industry has special importance. Although the share of project shipping in general transport is limited to 10 per cent, globalized economic relations also lead to firms desiring to grow in this area. Project shipping loads require expertise, experience and special knowledge. For example; No logistics line can meet the need of project shipping. Choosing the right line in this sense is important, the transport of good to crisis region require specialist and dynamic staff with such as agreements that guarantee safety. Project shipping may sometimes require multi-modal trans-

port modes depending on the load. If shipping to more than one country, it is significant that the physical and legal conditions of the countries must be known very detail. Companies need to have a superior organizational knowledge and skills in many aspects such as transportation, efficient management of resource, effective use of multimodal transport modes, route information, and cooperation with official and private organizations, authorization procedures, documentation and insurance. Moreover, in these projects, extra areas of expertise such as storage and distribution processes can be stepped in various locations. Rasim Özyurt, operation manager of UPI TRANS Özmal, said that in this context despite the increase in the number of Turkish firms that are better in quality than European, many Turkish firms are unaware of the legislation in Europe. “Unfortunately most Turkish companies do no have a good command of legislation, so they face frequent penalties as well as cause delay in deliveries. Most of the Turkish companies have learned by trial and error methods, not by reading laws and rules in Europe. For this reason, Turkey loses its business. Machine manufacturers should not only question capacity of the vehicle to carry its products, should pay attention to knowledge of legislation as well.” he said.

Holger U. Nord: OWL is among European’s leading regional machinery cluster. The institution represents the multiple diversity and innovative capacity of the German mechanical engineering sector within the country. Structurally, the majority of companies in OWL are SMEs and family companies. What should be done to increase the cooperation possibilities of the Turkish and German machine sector, and better market conditions? Hans-Dieter Tenhaef: The characteristic feature of the German machinery and plantengineering sector is its heavy export orientation. For many SMEs, being present at internati-

onal market and cooperating with their partners is a big challenge. Supplier and sales countries need to integrate market strategies into local production and services. The cooperation we have with our partners in countries such as Turkey within this business line brings along experience exchange and advantages. In what stage are members of your institution as part of Industry 4.0? What topics do member of your institution focus on in this area? Holger U. Nord: The German machinery and plant engineering sector is on the verge of the Industry 4.0. All production and production processes are digitized. Networking is provided between processes. Our basic goal is to form networks that create value in a dynamic and organized way. The whole process does not only mean the digitization or connection of production area. At the same time, the process goes beyond the companies and integrates them by moving the steps that create different values out of the national borders. The creation of these structures and alike structures is an extremely challenging and developing task for

What roadmap should be followed in the following period for further development of the cooperation between the Turkish Machinery and OWL MASCHINENBAU? Hans Dieter Tenhaef: It is a proven fact that the driving force of cooperation is to work in close cooperation on specific project by actively cooperating with strong international partners. Having a vision requires real goals that both parties can learn from and get. Mutual success stories open the way to strategic and deep alliances.
